W. . 2 Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought mil be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. .. ..... .7 3. Particulars as to stolen property will he likewise inserted in one isme, ij sufficient to enable the article in question to he thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered, the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions must be clearly stated. 5. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property will be inserted at a cost of l hs. per portrait, and of Is. 6d. per photo- graph or sketch of a stolen article. 6. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must he guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and, if the n/ ime of such person is required to he inserted and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. w 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and, as far as practicable, they are alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement-, for insertion in the next, issue. 10 .. In all crises the officer signing the request for the insertion of my announcement will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11 Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only ; they must be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must, be in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, by Postal Order, or by Post Office Order, payable at Parliament Street Post Office. 13. Anjwunccments concerning property lost or persons missing can only be accepted on payment, and the charges for the insertion of the same will be given on application. R. ANDERSON, Editor. SPECIAL NOTICE. PRISONERS UNDER REMAND. . - Tile aid of the Metropolitan Police is frequently ^ sought by other Police Forces to make inquiries respecting the antecedents of prisoners under re- mand, and such inquiries often result in identi- fying accused persons as being old offenders. But, in many cases, the time allowed for such inquiries is so brief that effect cannot be given to the request for information or that it can be com- plied with only in a perfunctory manner, and at great inconvenience. The Editor would therefore suggest, in the interest of the Provincial Police Forces, that fotir clear days, at least, should be allowed in eases of the kind, to complete the inquiries asked for. APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT I.— Criminal Investigation De- partment.— For failing to answer an indict- ment, 12th inst., for publishing obscene books— HARRY SIDNEY NICHOLS, age 45, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion fair, round features, hair light, clean shaved, eyes blue. A publisher. Warrant issued. Information to be forwarded to the Metropolitan Police Office, New Scotland Yard, S. W. AYRSHIRE. 2.— Ayr ( County).— For stealing, 27th ult. gold lever watch, No. 24085, floral design chased on cases, white dial, gold hands— RICHARD GALLOWAY, age 25, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion fresh ( freckled), hair and moustache dark, Scotch accent; dress, black coat and vest, blue trousers, dark overcoat with velvet collar, black soft hat, spring side boots. A watchmaker ; native of Maucliline. Has resided at Swindon, Wilts. ( See Case No. 55, 16th inst.) Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable of Ayrshire, Ayr. BRECONSHIRE. 3.— Brecon ( County).— For deserting his wife and children, leaving them chaigeable to the Brecon Union— RICHARD WOOD, alias DICK THE DRAINER, age 43 ( looks older), height 5 ft. in., complexion dark sallow, hair and moustache ( turning grey) dark, eyes dark brown, slouching gait; dress, old monkey jacket, slop, cord or mole- skin trousers, grey cloth cap, nailed boots. May be found on drainage or public works. Warrant issued. 4.— Brecon County).— For deserting his wife, leaving her chargeable to the Brecon Union — WILLIAM WILLIAMS, age 42, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, moustache sandy, eyes hazel; dress, dark monkey jacket and vest, cord trousers, hard felt hat, lace boots. A mason ; native of Brecon. Warrant issued. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Joseph, Brecon. 5.— Crickhowell ( County).— For obtain- ing ij5 15s. by false pretences— W. E. PALMER, age about 24, height about 5 ft., complexion pale, hair light brown, moustache light, eyes blue, small mole one side of face. Recently employed as an agent for the Singer Sewing Machine Company; native of Kidderminster Had with him 2 tin boxes. Absconded 2nd inst. May endeavour to leave the country. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Winterson, Crickhowell ; or Sergt. Evans, Hay. CAMBRIDGESHIRE. ( I — Cambridge ( Borough).— For obtain- ing credit by fraud, between 23rd ult. and 3rd inst.— HAROLD M. BERKLEY ST. RUTH, age 40 to 45, height 5 ft. 8 or ' J in., stout build, com- plexion dark, full face, hair ( curly) black, clean shaved ; dress, blue serge jacket and trousers, brown vest, dark striped overcoat with velvet collar, dark brown Alpine hat, brown boots. He left at an hotel, 3rd inst., a black hand- bag, 1 brown Gladstone bag, " R. L. A., 1st 7 R. F." painted on outside, containing an opera cloak ; 1 grey silk petticoat ; 1 pair lady's evening shoes ; 1 woollen shawl ; 1 night dress, marked " E. H. Marcus"; 1 white handkerchief, marked " M. L. Garman"; 1 pair boots; hair brushes, marked " L"; 1 white- handled razor; 1 patent strap ; and white woollen pyjamas. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Holland, Cam- bridge. CARDIGANSHIRE. 7.— Aberystwyth ( County).- For leaving his wife and child chargeable to the Common Fund of the Aberystwyth Union — GEORGE EDWARDS, alias BANBURY and BLACK GEORGE, age about 34, height about 5 ft, 4 in., complexion, hair, whiskers ( bushy), moustache, and eyes ( rather small) dark ; dress, brown cloth coat and vest, cord trousers, strong lace boots. A labourer ; may be found on public works. Warrant issued. Information to Srfpt. Phillips, Aberystwyth. CHESHIRE. £ 2 REWARD. 8.— Middlewich ( County).— For deserting his family— CHARLES DAVIES, age 44, height 5 ft. t! in., complexion sallow, hair black, stoops slightly, carries his head on one side. A native of Northwich. Warrant issued. The above reward will be paid by the Guardians of the Northwich Union to any person giving 6uch information as will lead to the arrest of Davies. Information to Supt. Large, Middlewich. 9 — Chester ( City).— For obtaining 2 skirts by false pretences— MRS. CLEVELAND, age about 25, height 5 ft. 4 in., slight build, com- plexion pale, thin features, hair dark brown ; dress, black slack jacket, black skirt with several rows of black ribbon around bottom, grey felt hat, 2 white feathers at side. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Laybourne Town Hall, Chester. DENBIGHSHIRE. 10. Denbigh ( County). — For perjury — JOHN EDWARD JONES, age 30, height 5 ft. 4J in., oval face, hair and moustache brown, eyes ( small) blue, sharp pointed Roman nose, FRIDAY, MARCH 30, 1900. 18.— Fareham [ County).— For obtaining, by false pretences, a mare, cart, and harness ( re- covered)— JOHN BAKER ( supposed false), age 30 to 35, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., complexion fair, rather full face, double chin, hair brown, small moustache light, nose appears to have been broken, very soft voice; dress, light dust coat, dark trousers, black hard felt hat, lace boots, brown gaiters, carried an umbrella : the appearance of a horse dealer.— And A MAN, age about 45, height about 5 ft. it in., stout build, complexion ruddy, hair, whiskers ( rather thin on chin), and mous- tache dark brown ; dress, dark overcoat, sealskin vest, dark trousers, black hard felt hat. They attend markets. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Hack, Fareham. 19.— Petersfield { County).— WOT obtaining £ 2 17s. bv false pretences, 1st inst.— G. SHANE ( supposed' false), age 60 to 70, height 5 ft. ti or 7 in., complexion fair, hair ( turning grey) sandy, beard on chin, and moustache, left eye defective, stooping gait ; wearing dark brown coat, brown spats, canvas shoes, brown soft felt hat, carried a rough brown overcoat and a black American bag. Stated he was in the employ of a firm of engineers at Deptford. Is identical with GEORGE PIERCE, Case No. 22, 9th inst. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. King, Petersfield. 20 — Portsmouth ( Borough) — For leaving his children chargeable to the Common Fund of the Portsea Island Union— FRANCIS FAITHFULL, age 28, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion fair, face and neck freckled, hair red, supposed clean shaved, eyes hazel, rather large head, scar left elbow ; dress, check tweed jacket and vest, light cord trousers, black hard felt hat, lace boots. Is a good flute and piccolo player, may seek employment with bands. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Town Hall, Portsmouth. HEREFORDSHIRE. 21.— Ross ( Count//).— For an indecent assault — FREDERICK VAUGHAN, age l'. l, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, slight moustache dark ; dress, old brown coat, dark blue jacket, 2 vests ( 1 dark cord, 1 black), dark cord trousers, brown cloth cap, heavy nail boots. A native of Little Dewchurch. Herefordshire. May seek employment as a farm labourer. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Jordan, Ross; or Sergt. Lloyd, Harwood End. HERTFORDSHIRE. 22.— Watford ( County).— For conspiracy and fraud.- REUBEN SUTTON HAMBLEY, age 20, height 5 ft. 6^ in , complexion, hair, and slight moustache dark ; dress, blue reefer suit, greenish colour overcoat with sack back, blac.. satin tie, black hard felt hat with wide brim, brown boots. A native of Hungerford, Berks. Warrant issued. Information to Superintendent Wood, Watford. KENT. 2").— Chatham ( County).— For deserting his wife at Strood— WILLIE HAIGH, age 30, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion fair, hair dark brown, moustache light, may be clean shaved, eyes blue, " Haigh " and a man tattooed on one arm, cut scar right eye ; dress, dark blue stable suit, long over- coat, blue serge cap. A stableman or cab driver. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Lacy, Chatham. LANARKSHIRE. 26.— Motherwell ( County).— For stealing, 10th ult., a silver watch ( recovered); 1 blue rough tweed overcoat, velvet collar, black lining, black and white sleeve lining HENRY RICHARDS, alias STEPHENSON, STEVENS, ROGERS, and LITTLE ION, age 33, height 5 ft. in., stout build, complexion fresh, hair dark brown, mous- tache dark, eyes hazel, short- sighted and wears glasses when reading, back of left hand and lst, 2nd, and 3rd fingers contracted, dot back of left forearm, upper front teeth missing. Previously convicted at Hull, York, Leeds, Morpeth, Durham, Cardiff, Tain, Glasgow, and Greenock. See portrait case No. 39, 19th August, 1898. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Moir, Motherwell, N. B. LANCASHIRE. 27— Chorley ( County).— For stealing, be- tween 25th and 26th inst., a dark grey cloth single- breasted J overcoat, black bone buttons, velvet collar, short division in centre of back, green letter case in one pocket; 1 pair brown kid gloves; 1 silver verge watch, double case, " W. Gillett" on outside of outer case— A MAN, age about 26, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., complexion dark, hair dark brown, clean shaved ; dress, blue serge jacket suit, light tie and cap. Stated he was a horse dealer, and native of Devonshire. Information to Supt. Norris, Chorley. 2$.— Kirkham ( County).— For stealing £ 4, at St. Anne's, between 22nd and 26th ult.— J. C. ADAMS, alias JOHN LANE, age 35 to 40, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion, hair ( bald on top, turning grey) and heavy moustache dark, round face, appears to twist his left side when walking ; dress, black tweed or navy blue jacket and vest, blue trousers, black felt hat, may be wearing brown lace boots. Had with him two small handbags ; left behind a small tin box and a traveller's order book for 1892. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Ormerod, Kirkham. 29.— Manchester ( City).— For failing to report— Supervisee JANE ALLEN, alios FRANCES FOBIN, and FRANCES FIELDING, Office No. 47787, age 64, height 5 ft. 1 in., com- plexion dark, hair grey, eyes brown, scar left wrist, lost several front teeth. Sentenced at Manchester, 6th December 1889, to 7 years penal servitude, and 7 years police supervision for larceny. Liberated 28th February, 1894. C. M P 200. slightly, bow- legged, addicted to drink : dress, usually black jacket, vest, and cap, greyish brown tweed trousers. A grocer's assistant. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Jones, Denbigh. DERBYSHIRE. 11- Chesterfield ( Borough).— For steal- ing, 13th inst., a bicycle ( recovered)— HARRY GRAHAM, age 25 to 30, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion, hair, and moustache dark, left fore- finger missing, walks erect; dress, black jacket and vest, black trousers with fine white stripes, white tie with blue tiowers, black and white check cap. A tramping tailor ; stated he came from London. Is believed to be a member of the Tailors' Union. Warrant issued. Information to Head Constable Emery, Chester- field. DEVONSHIRE. 12.— Plymouth ( Borough).— For failing to report — Licence - holder WILLIAM LITTLE, Office No. 347- 00, age 53, height 5 ft. 6 in., com- plexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes grey, right middle finger amputated, scar left side forehead, between left middle finger and ring finger. A stone dresser; native of Aberdare. Sentenced at New Sarum Assizes, 30th May, 1894, to 3 years penal servitude for larceny. Hemanet of former sentence expires 11th June, 1900. Pre- viously convicted at Gloucester, Swansea, and Cardiff. C. K. U. 752. Information to the Chief Constable, Borough Police, Plymouth. GLOUCESTERSHIRE. 13 — Gloucester ( County).— For failing to report — Supervisee WILLIAM JONES, alias CHARLES MATTHEW HOPKINS, Office No. 526- 00, age 73, height 5 ft. I5 ins., complexion fresh, hair white, eyes blue, cut scar right of fore- head, root of nose, right thumb, blue scar outer corner left eyebrow, round shouldered. A shoe- maker, native of Wells. Sentenced at Gloucester Quarter Sessions 18th October, 1899, to 4 months' imprisonment and 5 years' police supervision for larceny. Information to the Deputy Chief Constable, Gloucester. 14.— staple Hill ( County).— For obtaining food and lodgings by false pretences— HENRY WALKER, alias YORKEY, age 45 to 50, height 5 ft. ti in., complexion and hair ( turning grey) dark, 2 lower front teeth missing, bow- legged, Yorkshire accent; dress, brown coat, vest, and breeches, fawn coloured gaiters, black hat, brown worsted gloves, heavy lace boots, sometimes wears a long dark coat. He calls on farmers and states he is engaged by a firm to purchase horses for them. Is identical with man described in Case No. 45, 16th inst. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Cooke, Staple Hill. 15.— Bristol ( City).— For failing to surrender to his bail at Bristol Assizes, 20th ult., charged with obtaining ,£ 300 by false pretences, and perjury — JAMES READ ROE, age 39, height 5 ft. in., complexion fresh, hair and moustache ( turning grey) brown, eyes grey, wears pince- nez, dot back right forearm, eruption on back and chest. A journalist; native of Salisbury. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Bristol. HAMPSHIRE. 16 — Aldershot ( County). — For stealing £ 15, 24th inst. — WILLIAM WHITE, age 19, height 5 ft. 3 in., complexion fresh, hair and eyes brown : dress, brown tweed jacket with green Btripes, black trousers and vest, black cap. An officer's servant of the 2nd Hampshire Regiment, from which he is a deserter. Probably accompanied by A MAN, age 19, height 5 ft. in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes grey, scar top of both middle fingers. A deserter from the above Regi- ment. Supposed wearing plain clothes. 17•— Aldershot ( County).— For stealing £ 42 15s. 2} d.— HENRY BLACK, age 39, height 5 ft. 5J in., slight build, complexion fresh, thin features, hair brown, heavy moustache light brown, scar on abdomen, addicted to drink ; dress, blue diagonal serge jacket and vest, dark striped trousers, blue cloth cap. A clerk; native of Liverpool. Is a pay- sergeant of the Militia Medical Staff Corps ; formerly served in the Northamp- tonshire Regiment. May endeavour to leave the country. Information to Supt. Hawkins, Aldershot. HUNTINGDONSHIRE. 23.— St. Neots ( County).— For obtaining food, lodgings, and money by false pretences— GEORGE PIERCE, age about 60, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., slight build, round shoulders, hair, beard, and moustache grey, dyed brown, left eye defec- tive : dress, black coat and trousers, brown soft felt hat, brown canvas shoes. He presented a worthless cheque for more than the amount of his bill, and received the balance. Represented that he was in the employ of a firm of brewers at Stratf ord- on- A von. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Freestone, St. Neots. ISLE OF WIGHT. 24. Newport ( County).— For leaving his wife and family chargeable to the common fund of the Isle of Wight Union. 20th October, 1899— CHARLES MABEY, age 35, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fresh, hair and moustache light brown, eyes blue, 3 strokes tattooed back right wrist; dress, when last seen, grey or black jacket and vest, moleskin trousers, white silk muffler, skull cap, wore a black leather belt with snake buckle and brass ornaments. A labourer. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Hale, Newport. Licence- holder FREDERICK FISCHER MEYER, alias EMILE PIPER and CHARLES FISCHER, Office No. 216- 00, age 26, height 5 ft. 1 in., complexion fair, hair light brown ( curly) eyes blue ( defective), blue dot between left thumb and linger, heart, cross, and anchor front left fore- arm. A German waiter. Sentenced at Folke- stone, 11th October 1897, to 3 years penal servitude for larceny. Licensed 25th January last. X. 287. Supervisee JOHN McGINN, alias GEORGE MORAN, MORRISON, THOMAS JOHNSON, and JOHN RICHARDSON, Office No. 518- 00, age 38, height 5 ft. 3 in., complexion fresh, hair light brown, eyes blue, " S. G." and 2 dots and scars left forearm, " J. Mc " right forearm. Sentenced at Manchester, 9th July, 1894, to 5 years pen" l servitude and 3 years police supervision for receiving. Liberated 22nd ult., after previous revocation of licence. I. U. 608. Licence- holder JOHN BARKER, alias GEORGE BARKER, WILLIAM BONFIELD, and FIELD, Office No. 225- 00, age 64, height 5 ft. 10 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes grey, 2 scars left thumb, left palm, left forearm, right forefinger amputated. Native of Norwich. Sen- tenced at Knutsford Quarter Sessions, 1st July, 1896, to 3 years penal servitude and remanet of former sentence for shopbreaking. Licensed 25th January last, which expires 3rd April, 1901 P. W. 501. FRIDAY, MARCH 30, 1000. A native of Smyrna. Information to be forwarded to the Metropolitan Police Office, New Scotland Yard, S. W. OXFORDSHIRE. £ 10 REWARD. 31. — Henley { County). — For embezzling £ 221 13s. ltd., between 19th May and 18th July 1899— CHARLES PRIOR, age 31, height about 5 ft. 5 in., complexion fair, hair and moustache brown, eyes grey or blue ; dress, grey suit and cap, light brown dust coat, wore a silver wateh and chain. A brewer's clerk ; native of Henley- on- Thames. Absconded ltith inst. Warrant issued. The above reward will be paid by Messrs. W. H. Brakspeare & Co., Brewers, Henley- on- Thames, for such information as will lead to the arrest of Prior. Information to Supt. Jennings, Henley- on- Thames. LANCASHIRE. Licence- holder EDWARD TAYLOR, alias JOHN LAMB, RICHARD ARMSTRONG, GEORGE BULL, EDWARD WRIGHT, and GEORGE NOY COPE, Office No. 286- 01:, age 70, height 5 fl. 4 J in., complexion fresh, hair and eyes grey, brown mole right cheek, scars both forearms, left wrist, and left hand. Sentenced at Oldham, 5th November. 1897, to 3 years penal servitude for counting- house breaking. Licensed 5th ult. V. I. Q. X. 570. '• St.— Oldham { Borough).— For stealing, 9th inst., a lady's gold keyless Geneva watch, No. 153531 ; a brown plaid jacket; 1 rough blue serge vest; and a light blue necktie JACK REYNOLDS, alias BELL, HILL, MOSS, & c., age 38, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion fresh, hair ( bald in front) brown, moustache. sandy, eyes blue, sailor and woman with glass in hand, table and bottle on left arm, female on right; wearing the stolen jacket, vest, and tie, brown cap, white cord trousers, and lady's lace boots. Previously con- victed. A native of Manchester.
