THB POLIC GAZETTE PUBLISHED BY AUTHORITY. NEW SERIES. FRIDAY, OCTOBER 13, 1899. VOL. XVI., No. 1648. REGULATIONS. 1. All announcement* for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communications relating to them, should be addressed to THE EDITOR OF THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YARD, LONDON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they arc sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them, by another force. 3. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered, the name and address of some person responsible, for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions must be clearly xtatcd. 5. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property will be inserted at a cost of 15*. per portrait, and of Is. 6d. per plioto- qraph or sketch of a stolen article. 6. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not lens ranlt than Superintendent; and, if the name of such person is required, to be inserted and no warrant is in force against, him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. 7. Aniwvncements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and, as far as jtracticable, they are alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the, fact, referring to the number of the a nnowncement, for insortion, in the next issue. 10. In all cases the officer signing the request for the insertion of any announcement will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only ; they must be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, by Postal Order, or by Post Office Order, payable at Parliament Street Post Office. 13. Announcements concerning property lost or persons missing can only be accepted on payment, and the charges for the insertion of the same will be given on application. R. ANDERSON, editor. Cities and Boroughs therein, arranged in alphabetical order. 2.— Any additional copies of the GAZETTE beyond the number at present supplied will be forwarded on application in the form set forth in circular of the 7th of November, 1883. 3.— It is particularly requested that any com- plaints as to the non- delivery or of irregularity in the date of delivery of the POLICE GAZETTE, may be at once notified to the Editor. SPECIAL NOTICE. PRISONERS UNDER REMAND. The aid of the Metropolitan Police is frequently sought by other Police Forces to make inquiries respecting the antecedents of prisoners under re- mand, and such inquiries often result in identi- fying accused persons as being old offenders. But, in many cases, the time allowed for such inquiries is so brief that effect cannot be given to the request for information or that it can be com- plied with only in a perfunctory manner, and at great inconvenience. The Editor would therefore suggest, in the interest of the Provincial Police Forces, that four clear days, at least, should be allowed in cases of the kind, to complete the inquiries asked for. APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT 1.— K Division.— For embezzling £ 5, 8th August— GEORGE AUSTEN, age 45, height 5 ft, 6 or 7 in., stiff build, complexion fresh, hair, whiskers and moustache dark, addicted to drink ; dress, black jacket and vest, light trousers, black hard felt hat. A milk carrier. Warrant issued. 2.— T Division.— For fraudulently obtain ing poultry— J. KERR ASHTON, age 35 to 40, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., rather dark complexion long brown moustache, large eyes, square shoulders, of military appearance; wearing brown suit. Warrant issued. / 3.— T Division.— For stealing a bicycle, 9th ult.— SAMUEL BELISHA, a Spaniard, age 14, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion sallow, hair and eyes dark ; dress, dark clothes and cap, lace boots. Warrant issued. 4.— W Division. — For embezzlement — JACK ALGER, alias FUDGE, age about 40, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion fresh, hair dark, eyes hazel, scar on one side of face, first two fingers of right hand cannot be bent owing to frost- bite ; dress, dark tweed jacket and vest, cord trousers, cap, lace boots. Appearance of a stableman. Warrant issued. Information to be forwarded to the Metropolitan Police Office, New Scotland Yard, S. W. BERKSHIRE. 5.— Reading ( Borough).— For obtaining by false pretences, 30th ult., a 24 in. dull black leather Gladstone bag, nickel- plated fittings ; 22 in. chocolate do.; a youth's detachable cape over- coat, fawn colour with brown stripes, " J. Shep- herd, King's Road, Reading" on tab; 1 pair lambswool pants; 1 pair natural wool do.; 2 lambswool vests ; 1 natural wool shirt.— GEORGE WHITE, age 40 to 45, height 5 ft. 5 in., com- plexion dark, hair brown, moustache sandy, rather full face ; dress, blue melton overcoat, dark suit, brown soft felt hat; wore a gold Albert with large gold coin attached, suspended from top buttonhole of coat. Is accompanied by A YOUTH, age about 17 ; dress, shabby grey suit, soft brown felt hat. Warrant issued. Information to Capt. Henderson, Chief Con- stable, Reading. CHESHIRE. 6.— Middlewich ( County),— For embezzle- ment— PHILIP ABRAM, age about 30, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 in., complexion ruddy, hair and mous- tache brown ; dress, blue cloth suit, dark soft felt hat. A traction engine driver. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Large, Middlewich. DERBYSHIRE. 7.— Eckington ( County).— For obtaining money, food, and lodgings by false pretences, 17th and 18th ult,— HARRY GIBBONS, alias BIG HARRY ( supposed false), age 45 to 50, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., very stout build, complexion fair, broad face, hair ( turning grey) sandy, moustache grey, nose deformed, supposed turned to right side ; dress, light grey plaid suit ( trousers shabby), black and white plaid scarf, grey cap, brown boots blacked over ( one cracked across front). Stated he had obtained employment as an electrical fitter. Is known at Hemsworth, Staveley, Denby, Ches- terfield and Worksop. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Talbot, Eckington, near Sheffield. DEVONSHIRE. 8. — Exeter ( County). — For disobeying a magistrate's order for maintenance of his wife and family— WILLIAM BEATTIE, age 39, height 6 ft., complexion fresh, hair ( turning grey) dark, moustache sandy, eyes blue, W. B. on one fore- arm, is addicted to drink. A native of Perth. May be found on public or gas works, or at a brewery. Photograph can be seen 011 application. Warrant issued. 9.-— Exeter ( County).— For disobeying a magistrate's order for maintenance of his wife— CHARLES GRIGG, age 28, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, moustache sandy, eyes full. A timber hewer; native of Basing- stoke. Photograph can be seen on application. Warrant issued. Information to the Deputy Chief Constable of Devon, Exeter. ESSEX. 10.— Grays ( County).— For stealing, 1st inst., by trick, a bicycle ( recovered)— JOHN THOMP- SON, a man of colour, age about 30, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in, very slight moustache ; dress, dark clothes and light cap. Is accompanied by A WOMAN, age about 30, height about 5 ft. 4 in. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Jordan, Grays. 11 Ongar ( County).— For stealing £ 4 on 9th ult.— JOHN WILSON, age about 20, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion sallow, hair and small moustache dark, speaks with Irish accent; dress, blue slop, dirty brown trousers, dark peak cap, Blucher boots. An engine- driver. Warrant issued. Information to Inspector Gallagher, Ongar. 12.— Colchester ( Borough).— For embezzl- ing several sums of money— H. BROWN, age about 35, height 5 ft. 9 in., thin face, hair and moustache black, red scar over right eye ; dress, blue serge suit and cap. Was employed as a milk- carrier. GLOUCESTERSHIRE. 13.— Gloucester [ County).— For stealing bicycles— RALPH FRANCIS BEARD, age 25, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., complexion sallow, hair ( curly) dark, eyes brown : dress, blue serge jacket suit, blue cap, brown boots. Employed as an insurance agent for the past 2 years; a native of Gloucester. Warrant issued. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Philpott, County Police, Gloucester. HAMPSHIRE. 14.— Bournemouth [ County). — For ob- taining £ 1 by false pretences, 20tli ult.— ETHEL BLAKE, age 27, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., very thin, consumptive, complexion dark, hair black; dress, dark blue skirt, black and white striped blouse, black jacket and sailor hat, wearing a gold wire brooch forming the word " Ethel." A nurse ; absconded 21st ult. Was accompanied by A WOMAN, age 38 to 40, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., hair ( turning grey) dark ; dress, black cycling skirt, grass lawn blouse, white straw hat with black band, wearing a gold shamrock brooch. Had with her a dark brown dachshund dog. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Foster, Bournmouth. 15.- Portsmouth { Borough).— For desert- ing his wife, 18th July last— WILLIAM CRAW- FORD, age 26, height about 6 ft,, well built, complexion swarthy, hair dark brown, heavy moustache dark. A labourer; was employed on the railway. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Town Hall, Portsmouth. 16.- Southampton ( Borough). — For illegal pawning — MATILDA JONES, age 46, height 5 ft. 1 in., complexion fair, hair ( turning grey) light brown, front teeth missing ; dress, red bodice, dark skirt, black sailor hat with black velvet band. Has with her A GIRL, age 6 to 7, full face, hair short, front teeth deficient; wore a red pinafore with white spots. Warrant issued. 17.— Southampton ( Borough). — For embezzlement— GEORGE MILLER, age about 45, height about 5 ft. 6 in., hair short, stubby moustache reddish, is addicted to drink and betting ; dress, dark clothes, black bowler hat. A grocer's manager ; may endeavour to leave the country. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, South- HERTFORDSHIRE. 18 Bishop's- Stortford ( County).— For larceny, 3rd inst., at Albury— JOSEPH SMITH, age 30, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., complexion sallow, dair dark brown, scar on face ; dress, long dark coat, brown cord trousers, red neckerchief, black hard felt hat, nailed boots. A travelling tinker. . ^ Warrant issued. 19 — Bishop's- Stortford ( County).— For burglary at Little Hadham, 3rd inst.— Expiree RICHARD FRANCIS, Office No. 2807- 96, age 50, height 5 ft. 4J- in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes grey, R. F. ( partly obliterated) tattooed on left forearm, scars left of forehead, second right finger, first left finger, and back of hand. A labourer, native of Bawdsey, Suffolk ; dress, dark cloth suit, hard felt hat ( stolen), name of " Laugher " inside, merino under- vest ( stolen), and light lace boots, size 9. Sentenced at Maid- stone Assizes, 10th December, 1892, to 5 years penal servitude for burglary. S 509. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Foster, Bishop's Stortford. ISLE OF ELY. 20.— Ely ( County).— For stealing a bicycle ( recovered), 1st ult.— HARRY RHODES, age 18 ( looks older), height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., slight build, complexion fair, hair dark brown, eyes ( large) blue, turns his head about when walking; dress, dark blue suit, cap. A painter's labourer ; is fond of horse racing and betting. May endeavour to enlist. Warrant issued. Information to Supt, Roythorne, Ely. ISLE OF WIGHT. 21.— Newport ( County).— For obtaining by false pretences on the 5th inst., £ 162 7s. Id. ( including £ 10 Bank of England notes Nos. K/ 71 57,208 to 57,217)— WILLIAM HENRY LOVE, age 55, height 5 ft, 10 in., slight build, complexion fresh, hair, whiskers, and moustache ( turning grey), and eyes dark, large swelling at back of neck, addicted to drink ; dress, usually dark jacket suit, brown three- quarter length overcoat with velvet collar of darker shade, brown square felt hat, lace boots. Is accompanied by his WIFE, age 25, tall, fair ; and a GIRL, age 5, fair. They have with them a large tin box, tied with French grass rope. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. Information to Chief Inspector Ayres, Newport. LANARKSHIRE. 22.— Glasgow ( City).— For failing to report - Licence- holder GEORGE TRUEMAN, Office No. 2576- 97, age 34, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion pale, hair light brown, eyes grey, scar centre of forehead, left thumb, left fore and middle fingers. A baker : native of Inverness. Sentenced at Glasgow 23rd June, 1896, to 14 years' penal servitude for robbery with assault, Licenced 25th August, 1897. M 687. Last re- ported at South Shields on 21st March, 1898. Information to the Chief Constable, City Police, Glasgow. LANCASHIRE. 23.— Accrington ( Borough).— For obtain- ing £ 1 Is., 28th ult,, by false pretences— J. THOMAS ( supposed false), age about 24, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion very dark, clean shaved, prominent teeth; dress, dark brown rough overcoat, light trousers, black billy- cock hat, brown kid gloves, carried a walking stick, of good appearance. He calls on hotel keepers stating he is secretary to the Half- Holiday Foot- ball Club, and is collecting subscriptions. In some instances he takes a room at a hotel for the year for club meetings, and promises to call next day to pay £ 20 in advance. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Beattie, Accrington. 24.— Southport ( Borough).— For embezzl- ing sums of money amounting to £ 111 10s.— FREDERICK JOHN BRADLEY, age about 30 ( looks younger), height about 5 ft. 11 in., com- plexion fair, usually clean shaved, eyes bluish grey, prominent nose, of good appearance. An agent. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Southport. 25.— Warrington ( Borough).— For felony — ROBERT HANKINSON, age about 50, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion fresh, hair ( turning grey) light, eyes hazel, impediment in speech, round shouldered, slightly knock- kneed and turns his feet out; dress when last seen, dark suit ( trousers patched at knees), hard hat, white muffler, old lace boots. A tramping carter or stableman. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Talbot, War- rington. LEICESTERSHIRE. 26.— Hinckley ( County).— For stealing har- ness, etc., at Hinckley, 18th ult. ( recovered)— Expiree SAMUEL SMITH, alias JOHN FLETCHER, GILROY, and SORE - EYED SAMMY, Office No. 2179- 97, age 61, height 5 ft. 3 in., complexion dark, hair dark brown ( turning grey), eyes dark brown ( weak), left wrist slightly deformed, brown mole left temple. A tin worker, native of Pershore ; travels the country with vans and attends horse fairs. Sentenced at Northamp- ton County Sessions 19th October, 1893, to 5 years penal servitude for stealing a horse collar. Licenced 23rd July, 1897, which expired 18th October, 1898. O. T. 392. Warrant issued. 27.— Hinckley ( County).— Absconded 8th inst., from Desford Industrial School— HARRY CAVE, age 14J, height 4 ft. 8 in., complexion dark, hair black, e. yes dark ; wearing the school uniform, green corduroy, stamped 900. Shillock, Hinckley 28.— Leicester ( Borough).— For stealing a double barrel breech- loading gun in a square brown canvas case, and £ 18,8th inst.— EDWARD VINCENT, age 53, height 6 ft., well built, com- plexion sallow, hair and moustache grey, eyes brown, teeth discoloured ; has with him a green jacket suit, a grey mixture suit, rough grey over- coat, brown mackintosh, a large leather portman- teau and a brown hand- bag, wears hard felt hat or cap. Is believed to be a jeweller, but has recently been employed as a bicycle repairer. Information to the Chief Constable, Town Hall, Leicester. LINCOLNSHIRE. 29. — Boston ( County). — Escaped from custody, 8th inst., charged with fowl stealing— HENRY WILSON, age 40 to 45, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., hair light, moustache ginger, arms supposed tattooed, walks slightly lame; dress, pilot or serge jacket, cord trousers, strong lace boots. A labourer; lodges at low beer houses; may be found working with threshing machines or in potato fields. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Costar, Boston. 30.— Stamford ( County).— For stealing, on 10th inst., 1 plain silver match box, mounted buckle and strap at ends ; a small wash- leather bag and about £ 4 10 , including a fourpenny piece with a bole in, a Jubilee shilling, and a half- crown with rose, shamrock, and thistle thereon, date 1817 or 1827— HARRY GOLD, age 32, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion pale, hair and thin moustache brown, eyes grey, abscess scars on side of neck and throat, scar inside one leg; dress, blue serge double- breasted jacket, dark tweed trousers, cap, lace boots. A tailor. Has a pedlar's certificate, granted at Bishop's Stortford 21st August last. Warrant issued. Information to Inspector Swaby, Stamford. NORFOLK. 31.— Norwich ( City).— Escaped, 15th ult., from a lunatic asylum— ANNIE FLORENCE ATTREE, a criminal lunatic, age 35 to 40, medium height, stout build, complexion pale, hair black, eyes grey, well educated, is addicted to drink and cigarette smoking, excitable, fond of cycling; dress, black skirt, coloured blouse, green jacket, green sailor hat, serge cycling knickers, red flannel petticoat, black stockings, cycling shoes, linen marked " B. H." Has friends in Kent and Sussex. Information to Chief Constable Winch, Norwich. NORTHUMBERLAND. 32.— Blyth ( County).— For stealing£ 2 17s. 3d. 8th ult.— GEORGE WARREN, alias ROBINSON, age 33, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion pale, hair light, slight moustache, eyes hazel, several blue marks on front of right shoulder ; dress, dark vieuna cloth coat and vest, steel grey trousers, brown cap. A miner ; native of Golborne, Lan- cashire. Warrant issued. 33.— Blyth ( County).— For obtaining food and lodgings by false pretences at Whitley, between 4th and 6th ult.— MILLICENT EDWARDS, alias CLARK, WATSON, and DOUGLAS, age 26, height 5 ft, 3 in., complexion sallow, oval face, large mouth, hair black, eyes hazel, upper front teeth missing ; dress, black three- quarter jacket, black or green skirt, black straw hat, wide brim, trimmed black ribbon, brown boots. Previously convicted of larceny at Sunderland, West Hartle- pool, Jarrow, South Shields, Darlington, Middles- brough, and Leeds. Warrant issued. Information to Captain Terry, Chief Constable, Morpeth, or Supt. Jobson, Blyth. 34.— Tynemouth ( Borough).— For obtain- ing food and lodgings by false pretences— E. C. NUNN, age about 30, height 5 ft. 10 in., slight build, complexion swarthy, hair black, clean shaved, theatrical appearance ; dress, light brown mixture jacket suit, red knot tie, ends hanging down, brown peak cap, low shoes. He took lodgings, 21st August, stating that he was a stage manager at a theatre, also stated that he had been employed at a music- hall at Southend. Absconded 15th ult. Warrant issued. 35.— Tynemouth ( Borough).— For stealing 12th ult., £ 7 10s. 10d.— HARRY, alias GEORGE CYRIL MILLER, age 25, height 5 ft. 11 in., com- plexion fair, oval face, hair brown, eyes blue, cut scar on forehead above right eyebrow, slight scar right cheek, long scar left arm, small inole on small of back right side. A native of Watford, Herts. May be employed selling milk or as a hotel porter. 36.— Tynemouth ( Borough).— For stealing ( bailee), 16th ult., a " Popular Rover " Bicycle, No. 9639, stamped under lug near headpiece, straight handle bar, 28 in. wheels, Dunlop tyres, " The Rover, Rover Cycle Co., Ltd., Coventry," on shield- shaped name plate— J. DAGLISH sup- posed false), age about 23, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion and slight moustache dark ; dress, blue serge jacket suit, blue tie, soft hat. A native of Llanelly. Has served in the Army. May be found on public works in Glamorganshire. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Scott, Llanelly YORKSHIRE ( West Riding). 38 — Leeds { City).— For stealing £ 140, the monies of Her Majesty's Postmaster General, 1st inst,— ARTHUR PICKLES, late sub- postmaster, Meanwood Road, Leeds; age 32, height about 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fresh, hair and moustache light, eyes blue, mole and scar on bridge of nose, is a slow speaker, walks briskly ; dress, when last seen, navy blue check suit, brown tie, black billycock hat, lace boots, grey mixture three- quarter overcoat : had with him £ iO in postage stamps, blank money- order forms, Nos. 1017 to 1200, together with the office stamp. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, City Police, NOTTINGHAMSHIRE. 39 — Newark { Borough). — For stealing ( bailee) 2 ladies' silver Geneva watches ( 1 No. 83147, white dial, 2 angels in gold thereon, flowered case, 1 No. 40295, plain case)— ARTHUR POOLE, age about 24, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion fresh, hair light, eyes blue, well educated. Supposed a native of Leamington. Had in his possession a postal order for 10s. issued 9th ult. at Stroud, No. 924341 or 924346. Absconded 13th ult. Warrant issued. SHROPSHIRE. 40.— Ludlow { County).— For deserting her three children at Boraston, Tenbury— HARRIET WILLIAMS, age 35, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., com- plexion fresh, hair dark, eyes blue. Absconded 15th July last with A MAN, age about 55, com- plexion. hair, whiskers, and moustache dark, lame right leg ; may be working at a brick- yard or hop picking. Warrant issued.
