Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the. Portrai * « /" persons whose apprehension in sought for serious offences, and' engravings of stolen property will be inserted, at a cost of 15$. per portrait, and of 7s. 6d. per photo- graph or . sketch of a stolen article. 6. Ever if a nit iu necment, if for the apprehension of a person, must bo guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and, if the name of such person is required to be inserted and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must In• signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case ma y be. 7. Announcements co/ werning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, * nd, as far as practicable, they are alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in. the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement, for insertion in the luixt issue. 10. In all cases the officer signing the request for the insertion of any announcement • will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not. later than Saturday morning. They must, be clearly ici'itten on one side of the paper only ; they must be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the offiee, New Scotland Yard, by Postal Order, or by Post Office Order. payable at Parliament Street Post Office. 13. THE EDITOR requests that Chief Officers of Police, when forwarding for identification by the Metropolitan Police the Photographs and descrip- tive forms of Persons in custody, will please see that the specific offence is stated, e. g. :— Stealing £ 1,0011 from bank ; stealing pair of boots from shop door : stealing bale of silk, van unattended, & c., & c. This may often prove a ready means of recognition, and Judges have recently complained of the absence of such particulars in dealing with previous convictions. Absconded from Campbeltown 15th ult., and was last seen at Ayr. He is believed to have a considerable sum of money in his possession, and may endeavour to leave for America where he has friends. A watchmaker, native of Dundalk, He left Banff 25th ult., and was accompanied by his wife, age 50, height about 5 ft, 7 in., hair dark ( turning grey), long face, prominent nose, sharp features, large front teeth, of smart appearance. BERKSHIRE. 8- Maidenhead ( County).— For obtain- ing £ 1 15s. by fraud, 21st inst., at Bray A MAN, age about 45, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion pale, hair brown, eyes sunken ; dress, grey overcoat, dark grey trousers, black bowler hat, low crown, rather flat brim, carried a dark stick with crooked handle. BUCKINGHAMSHIRE. 10.— Fenny Stratford { County).— For stealing 13th inst., a Postal Order for £ 1 issued at Enfield Wash, and £ 5 12s.— A MAN, age about 25, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion fair, hair light, clean shaved, teeth very dark, one upper front tooth deficient; dress, grey jacket, slate colour striped trousers, cap, brown shoes, wears a ring set blue stones on left little finger, rode a bicycle; stated he was taking the place of a booking clerk at the railway station. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Lait, Fenny Stratford. 11 Slough ( County).— For obtaining, 4th inst., by false pretences, a pair of guns ( recovered) — H. WINDSOR, alias LEONARD, age 60, height 5 ft, 7 in., complexion fresh, hair white, square- cut moustache, eyes light blue, small birthmark side of right eye, quiet manner ; dress, blue serge coat and vest, grey trousers, brown soft felt hat. Warrant issued. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Sutton, Slough. CHESHIRE. £ 2 REWARD. 12 — Middlewich ( County).— For deserting his wife— HENRY RAYNOR, age 32, height 0 ft. H in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes grey, one leg shorter than the other, walks lame. A native of Northwich. Warrant issued. The above reward will be paid by the Guardians of the Northwich Union for such information as will lead to the arrest of Raynor. Information to Supt, Large, Middlewich. s CLACKMANNANSHIRE. 13.— Alloa ( Burgh).— For embezzling about £ 52— JOHN JACK ROBERTSON, age 40 to 50, height 5 ft, 6 or 7 in., stout build, complexion florid, full face, heavy jaws, hair dark brown ( turning grey), heavy brownish moustache, hairy nose, flat feet, speaks quickly ; dress, dark iweed jacket suit, black tie, black hard felt liat, lace boots. A brewer's traveller. Warrant, issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. Information to Chief Constable Nicol, Burgh Police Chambers, Alloa. DERBYSHIRE. U — Wirksworth ( County).— For stealing 25th ult., at Darley Dale, a lady's gold watch and chain ( recovered); 1 gold cross ; 1 gold locket one side glass with photograph of a lady inside ; 1 gold pencil case— ELLEN or HARRIET ELLEN SMITH, age 35, height 5 ft. 0J in., complexion sallow, hair very dark brown, eyes brown ; dress, navy blue dress with cream coloured cord silk front, dark navy blue jacket, light colour straw hat, trimmed gauze, 3 feathers ( 2 white, 1 same colour as hat), a bunch of polyanthus flowers in velvet under left side. A native of Wicklow. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Hollingworth, Wirksworth. 15.- Chesterfield ( Borough).— For steal- ing, 16th inst., a brown double- breasted cloth vest ; 1 pair greenish square check cloth trousers, with hip pocket; 1 white silk tie ; 1 green shot do. ; 1 cigarette- holder, amber mouthpiece, 2 silver ferrules thereon, in a black- leather case lined red— A MAN, age about 21, height 5 ft. 6 in., rather stout build, complexion fair, red face, hair light, eyes light blue ; dress, snuff colour coat, light check trousers, red silk tie. Stated he was a clerk on the railway. Information to Head Constable Emery, Chester- field. HAMPSHIRE. 17Bournemouth ( County).— For steal- ing, 2nd inst., a gold bracelet ( recovered)— NEVILLE CHARLTON, age about 25, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., full face, hair brown, clean shaved, carbuncle scar left of neck and on right forearm; dress, brown suit, straw hat, brown boots, of gentlemanly appearance. He stayed at a high- class boarding house with a brother and another man, both of good appearance. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Forster, Bournemouth. IS — Winchester ( City).— For obtaining £ 4 18s. Od. by a forged cheque on the Diss branch of the London and Provincial Banking Company, Limited, 14th inst.— AMY THOMP- SON ( supposed false), age about 35, height about 5 ft, 2 in., pale face, hair dark ; dress, dark blue blouse, dark skirt, light hat; carried a new dark plaid holdall with two straps and handle attached. She called on a shopkeeper and made a small pur- chase, and then gave an order for some goods ( not in stock), and directed that on their arrival they were to be forwarded to the house of a well- known resident, and then asked the shopkeeper to cash the above cheque. Warrant issued. Information to Head Constable Felton, Win- chester. 10.— Portsmouth ( Borough).— For stealing, 6th inst., a pair of Balmoral boots, kid tops, per- forated toe caps, recently repaired, size 7 ; 1 pair grey mixture tweed trousers, red indistinct stripe running through ; 1 silk tie, brown ground with gold spots ; 1 collar, " Huekvale " marked inside ; 1 pair regimental braces, No. 4903 stamped thereon ; 1 single- breasted blue serge jacket and vest, lined black ( nearly new); 1 blue diagonal skull cap; 1 silver Geneva watch, open face ; silver curb pattern chain with a Jubilee sixpence attached; and 4s. 7d.— THOMAS MAUND, age 18}-, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes grey, supposed wearing the stolen clothes. A native of Birmingham. Is a private of the 2nd Shropshire Light Infantry. Information to the Chief Constable, Town Hall, Portsmouth. KENT. £ 1 REWARD. 20.— Ashford County).— For deserting her child— KATE STANDEN, age about 30, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion fair, light speck in one eye, fashionably dressed ; a native of Ashford. Warrant issued. The above reward will be paid by the Guardians of the East Ashford Union for such information as will lead to the arrest of the above. Information to Supt, Bailey, Ashford 21. Canterbury( County).— For leaving his children chargeable to the BleanUnion— PORTER AYLMORE, age 39, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., com- plexion fresh, hair brown, eyes hazel, woman's head tattooed left forearm. A master mariner; trades between Guernsey, London, and North of England. Native of Bosham, near Chichester. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Sargent, County Police Office, Canterbury. 22.— Malling County).— For rape on a girl age 7— THOMAS CHAPMAN, age about 40, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fresh, hair, moustache, and slight side whiskers light, eyes grey, slight impediment in speech, top of 1 fore- finger deficient ; dress, dark cloth jacket, cord trousers, cloth cap, red neckerchief, heavy lace boots. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Hoare, West Malling. 23.— Canterbury ( City).— For failing to report— Supervisee HENRY ADLAM, Office No. 3204- 97, age 27, height 5 ft. 1 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes grey, two scars right side of head, scar left forearm, left forefinger, brown mole centre of back, right forearm, and above left knee, small brown birthmark outside left thigh. A labourer; native of London. Sentenced at South London Sessions 9th July, 1895, to 3 years penal servitude and 3 years police supervision for larceny. Liberated from Dartmoor 28th October, 1897, V. 239 ; was reconvicted at East Kent Quarter Sessions, 18th October, 1898, and sentenced to 9 months imprisonment for larceny, and discharged from Canterbury Prison in July last. Information to Chief Constable Farmery, City Police, Canterbury. 24.— Maidstone ( Borough).— For stealing between 14th and 16th inst., a fine blue serge suit and a metal watch — ARTHUR POTTER, age about 30, height 5 ft. li in., complexion fresh, hair sandy, 2 fingers of left hand deficient; dress, dark jacket, cord trousers, skull cap; a hoop- maker. Information to Chief Constable Mackintosh, Maidstone. LANARKSHIRE. 25.— Glasgow ( City).— For obtaining money by fictitious cheques— JOHN GRAY, age 30, height 5 ft. 1\ in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes dark blue, dot base of left thumb, cut scar above right knee ; dress, blue serge jacket suit, sailor's cap. A seaman, native of Aberdeen. The cheque book is on the Union Bank of Scot- land, and numbered B V 931487 to 931498. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Boyd, Glasgow. LANCASHIRE. 26. — Liverpool ( City). — For stealing £ 19 18s., 17th ult. — JAMES WALTER COOK, age 41, height 5 ft, 1 or 2 in., hair and slight moustache ( turning grey) dark, very prominent nose; dress, black suit, hard hat. A butcher's clerk, has also been a ship's steward, and may seek similar employment. Absconded 19th ult. Information to the Head Constable, Detective Department, Liverpool. ^/ S S 27.— Warrington ( Borough).— For stealing, 27th ult., a silver watch and chain ( recovered)— JAMES HASLAM, age about 20, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 in., slight build, complexion pale, hair nearly black; dress, black jacket suit, trousers very greasy, dark neckerchief, grey cap, clogs. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Talbot, Warrington. LINCOLNSHIRE. 28.— Boston ( County).— For obtaining food and lodgings by false pretences, 15th inst. HARRIS, age about 28, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., hair ( short) brown, clean shaved, shows his eye teeth very much when laughing ; dress, brown jacket and vest, grey breeches, brown gaiters, stand- up collar, blue striped tie, brown boots, wears a leather watch- guard. Rode a bicycle ; stated he was a native of Oxford. Warrant issued. Information to Supt, Costar, Boston. NORFOLK. 2'. l— Downham Market ( County).— For failing to appear to a summons 24th ult., charged with carnally knowing a girl under the age of 16 — ALBERT BOWCOCK, a butcher, late of Down- ham Market, age 40, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., com- plexion fresh, hair ( thin on top and turning grey) brown, eyes blue, turns his feet out and is a bad walker. May endeavour to obtain employment on board ship. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Mash, Downham Market. NORTHAMPTONSHIRE. 30.— Northampton ( Borough).— For em- bezzling £ 14 8s. 2d.— JOHN WALLACE FER- GUSSON, age about 30, height 6 ft. 1 in., com- plexion fresh, hair brown, moustache inclined to sandy, good teeth, walks erect, of good address. A grocer's manager. May endeavour to leave the country. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Mardlin, North- ampton. OXFORDSHIRE. 31.— Oxford( County).— For stealing£ 19 10s. 5th inst.— JANE WESTALL, age 31, height 5 ft. 3 in., stout build, complexion pale, rather pointed nose, hair dark brown, eyes light brown; dress, navy blue serge dress trimmed cream lace, white sailor hat with black velvet band, patent leather shoes with buckles. A domestic servant, native of Nottingham. Is fond of visiting low public houses. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable of Oxford- shire, Oxford. s SHROPSHIRE. 32.— Bridgnorth ( County).— For attempted rape at Danesford, 30th ult.— A MAN, age 25 to 30, height 5 ft, 6 or 7 in., complexion fair ( sun- burnt), hair ( short) brown, moustache dark brown, rather long face ; dress, dark mixture jacket and vest, dark trousers, grey plaid cap, grey woollen shirt with light colour band. A crate maker ; native of Burslem. Has served in the Militia.— JAMES WESLEY, age about 35, height 5 ft, 5 or 6 in., complexion sallow, hair, slight mous- tache, and eyes brown; dress, dark grey clolh suit ( much worn), dark grey cap.
