OULATIONS. ^ All announcements for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all Gomm/ wnicatiom relating to them, should be addressed to THE EDITOR OF THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YARD, LONDON, S. W. i Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. $ Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. V In all cases where a reward is offered, the' name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions must be clearly stated. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property will be inserted at a cost of 15s. per portrait, and of Is. 6d. per photo- graph or sketch of a stolen article. JL Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and, if the name of such person is reauired to be inserted and no warraid is in force against him, the requisition must he signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be, 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less ran> than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and, as far as practicable, they are alphabetically urranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinque/ ds or stolen property to be inserted ir, the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to th* Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement, for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases the officer signing the request for the insertion of any announcement will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11. Announce me ids for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only ; they must be in the usual form, ami accompanied' by a covering letter. 12. All payrneids must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, by Postal Order or by Post Office Order payable at Parliameid Street Post Offer. 13. SPECIAL NOTICE. PRISONERS UNDER REMAND. The aid of the Metropolitan Police is frequently sought by other Police Forces to make inquiries respecting the antecedents of prisoners under re- mand, and such inquiries often result in identi- fying accused persons as being old offenders. But, in many cases, the time allowed for such inquiries is so brief that effect cannot be given to the request for information or that it can be com- plied with only in a perfunctory manner, and at great inconvenience. The Editor would therefore suggest, in the interest of the Provincial Police Forces, that four clear days, at least, should be allowed in cases of the kind, to complete the inquiries asked for. SPECIAL NOTICE. ATTENTION is directed to ASTON BLOUNT, described in POLICE GAZETTE, 23rd June last, Case No. 1, who is wanted on a warrant for obtaining goods by means of worthless cheques. This man is identical with Dr. FREDERICK WILLIAM KIRKHAM, who for the past 2i years has been in practice at Chertsey, Surrey, and is believed to have been previously in practice at Paignton, Devon, and Downham Market, Norfolk. During the past two months he has committed frauds in London and Reading in the names of Dr. ROSS, Dr. EDWARDS, Dr. CONSIDINE, and ASTON BLOUNT. He has in his possession worthless cheques which he will no doubt utter to tradesmen, or may endeavour to open other banking accounts with the same; Nos. 56263 to 56280 011 the African Banking Corporation, Threadneedle Street; Nos. G 520471 to 520500 on Messrs. . lohn and Charles Simmonds' Bank, Reading; Nos. C 471281 to 471310 on Messrs. Gillett and Co.' s Bank, Oxford ; and Nos. Q 46426 to 46450 on the London and County Bank, Reading. Amended description, age 43, height about 5 ft. 7 in., well built, complexion sallow, hair and moustache dark brown ; dress, black frock coat and vest, grey trousers, silk hat. It is requested that bankers may be cautioned against this man, and requested to give him into custody, should he call, or to communicate immediately with the police should any of the above mentioned cheques be tendered. MAXWELL, age 30 to 35, height about 5 ft. 7J- in., complexion, hair and moustache dark, sunken cheeks, short quick step ; dress, when last seen, blue serge coat and vest, dark striped trousers, light covert coat, straw hat. A collector ; native of Yorkshire. Warrant issued. 3 - K Division. — For stealing£ 3 4s. 5| d., 27th ult.— JAMES MCDONALD, age 24, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion fresh, hair and slight mous- tache light, eyes blue, slight North Country accent; dress, black morning suit, black hard felt hat, tan lace boots ; has with him a brown tweed jacket suit and cap to match. Is a good shorthand and type- writer. Supposed a native of Manchester. M. P. in monogram thereon ; 1 lady's gold old- fashioned Geneva lever watch, white dial, makers, " Muller, Geneve," thereon; 1 silver old- fashioned hunter watch, a piece of paper, " This watch is for my daughter Maggie, Gilbert Scott Marshall," written thereon, inside back case, makers, " William Wright" and " No. 861" on dial i 1 silver cream jug, chased, " R. He obtained the jewellery and money by bogus cheques on the London and Westminster Bank, written on ordinary notepaper and signed " H. H. Harris" and " Johnson " over a penny postage stamp. Warrant issued. 8.— Cambridge ( Borough).— For stealing ( bailee), 13th inst., a bicycle ( recovered)— A MAN, who gave the name of — BENNETT, age about 30, height about 5 ft. 10 in., complexion dark, moustache; dress, light suit, white straw hat with black band, brown shoes. Supposed a follower of race meetings. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Holland, Cambridge. CARNARVONSHIRE. 9. — Conway ( County). — For obtaining money by false pretences— L. M. LONG, alias MAUD ELLIOT, BEATRICE MANNING, MRS. MONTGOMERY, MRS. D. M. KIRBY, & c., age about 35, short, stout build, complexion pale, hair ( turning grey) brown, prominent teeth, mole right side of neck and back of right hand, cool demeanour ; dress, black skirt and jacket, white blouse, fur necklet, black sailor hat and veil, carried a mackintosh. She engages apartments at seaside resorts for herself, her husband, a child, and governess, and, suddenly discovering that her purse is missing, obtains money to enable her to pay her return railway fare. Vl— Middlewich ( County).— For stealing a silver English lever watch, white dial, gold hour hand, cardboard minute ditto, seconds hand missing, maker Willis, Northwich ; and a silver watch guard, long link pattern— JESSE DEAKIN, age 25, height 5 ft. in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes grey, mole on right hand ; dress, black jacket, navy blue vest, grey trousers, black felt hat. A native of Northwich. Has served in the Army and Navy, from both of which he was discharged. Warrant issued. \\.— Midd! ewich ( County).— For obtaining £ 5 by false pretences— GEORGE HAMILTON STANLEY, age 21, height 5 ft. 3 in , complexion sallow, hair dark brown, clean shaved, eyes blue, of good address, speaks French ; dress, dark suit, black hard felt hat, carried a brown mackintosh coat. A groom ; stated he was a native of Texas, U. S. A. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Large, Middlewich. CUMBERLAND. 12.— Carlisle ( City).— For failing to report — JAMES HUTCHINSON, alias JOHN WILSON, EDWARD BELL, EDWARD PLACE, and JOHN CAMERON, Office No. 1052- 99, age 08, height 5 ft. 3} in., complexion fresh, hair and eyes grey, each forefinger slightly deformed, scars on head, bridge of nose, left side of neck, left forearm, and outside left hand ; dressed in slate- coloured suit. A skinner; native of Bradford. Sentenced at North Riding Quarter Sessions, 17th October, 1895, to 3 years penal servitui le and 3 years police super vision for larceny. DERBYSHIRE. 13.— Langley Mill County).— For stealing £ 72 at Ilkeston, 10th inst.— WILLIAM HENRY YOUNG, age 52, height 5 ft. 8 . in., complexion fair, prominent forehead, hair ( nearly bald), and moustache grey, eyes grey or blue, slightly bow- legged, rather corpulent, is well educated and very talkative ; dress, black coat and vest, brown trousers, hard felt hat, lace boots. Native of Kent; late a signalman on the G. N. Railway. Has served in the army. May endeavour to leave the country. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Daybell, Langley Mill, near Nottingham. DORSETSHIRE. It. — Cerne - Abbas ( County).— For in- decent assault at Buckland Newton, 9th inst.— A MAN, age 20 to 25, height about •> ft. 5 in., freckles on face, hair brown, clean shaved ; dress, black coat, one sleeve torn, dark trousers, red necker- chief, small brown cap. Appearance of a tramp. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Elford, Cerne- Abbas. ESSEX. £ 5 REWARD. 15- Brentwood ( County).— For burglary and assault-- HENRY BANTOCK, Office No. 211- 99, see Case No. 18, 30th ult. The above reward will be paid by Mr. Baker ( Secretary to the Licensed Victuallers Association), Crown Chambers, Romford, to any person giving such information as will lead to the apprehension and conviction of Bantock. Information to Supt. Allen, Brentwood, 10.— Grays ( County).— For stealing a rough black jacket and vest : I pair navy blue trousers ; 1 pair lace shoes with toe caps ( nearly new), 2 pairs blue worsted socks, 2 flannel shirts ( 1 with collar), 1 Hannel belt with two pockets; 1 white silk neckerchief ; 1 silver hunter watch ; 1 silver chain with small pearl fish and com- pass attached ; 1 black handled razor; 1 white bone handled shaving brush; 1 small white handled penknife— ROBERT CHAMBER- LAIN, age about 34, height about 5 ft. 10 in., complexion, hair ( turning grey), and moustache dark, small lump above right wrist: wearing the stolen clothing. Supposed a native of St. Mar- garet's, Rochester. Is believed to be a reservist of the 17th Lancers. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Jordan, Grays.^ 17 Southend- on- Sea ( county). for stealing ( bailee) at Rayleigh on 30th May last, a pneumatic bicycle, diamond frame, enamelled black, usual parts bright, drop handle bars, cork handles, maker 11 Smith, Saltley," 28- in. wheels, laced spokes, rat trap pedals, Beeston tyres, H in., black saddle, Hertford bell, no mud guards— WILLIAM BROWN, a mulatto, age about 25, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., hair ( curly) black, eyes brown ; dress, brown suit, dark cloth cap. Has been employed with a steam circus. Warrant issued. 1*.— Southend- on- Sea ( County).— For stealing, 12 inst., at Rawreth, a pony ( recovered) — JOHN RICHES, alias LEE, age 24, height 5 ft. 5 in., stout build, complexion ( slightly freckled) fair, hair ( short) light, eyes blue, very deaf ; dress, black jacket and trousers, old light vest, white sweater, old black cardigan, coloured silk necker- chief, cloth cap, heavy lace boots. May be found at Tottenham, Walthamstow, or Canning Town. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Simmonds, Southend- on- Sea. 6 GLAMORGANSHIRE. 19.— Cardiff ( Borough).— For stealing, 9th inst., a set of fish carvers— WALTER ELDRIDGE, age 33, height 5 ft. 10 in., complexion ruddy, hair ( short) dark brown, turning grey, moustache dark, no fingers on left hand, which is badly deformed, occasionally stammers badly; dress, when last Been, square cut blue serge jacket suit, straw hat, brown boots. An insurance agent, native of Ely. May be found in the company of loose women, or dealing in cheap jewellery. Information to Chief Constable McKenzie, Cardiff. ^ GLOUCESTERSHIRE. 20.— Cheltenham ( County). •— For false pretences— ERNEST COX, age 30 to 40, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 in., complexion fresh, hair ( grey in patches) brown, moustache grizzly grey, eyes grey, pock marked ; dress, snuff coloured suit, double breasted jacket, light cap, heavy lace blucher boots. A bricklayer ; supposed a native of Luton. Will probably seek employment on public works. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Hopkins, Cheltenham 21. — Chipping Sodbury ( bounty).— For stealing 6th inst. at Olveston, a pneumatic bicycle, " New Howe" on front, " Dunlop " tyre on front wheel, " Palmer" tyre on hind, head lock, fiat handle bar, cork handles, rubber pedals, spring of saddle broken, mud guard fitted to hind wheel— GEORGE PULLEN, age 35 to 40, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., hair and moustache dark ; dress, light brown holland jacket, dark vest, dirty cord trousers, blue cap ; may now be wearing a Zulu etraw hat and heavy boots, lias with him a pilot coat. Has been employed at haymaking. Supposed to have served in the army. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Cooke, Chipping Sodbury. HAMPSHIRE. 22.— Portsmouth ( Borough).— For obtain- ing 10s. by false pretences, 2 » ult.— PROFESSOR WILLIAMS, alias FREDERICK GILMORE and TAYLOR, age 25 or 20, height 5 ft. 8 or I) in., complexion fair, hair light brown, slight light moustache or clean shaved. He visits H. M. ships, usually carrying a small black handbag, and representing himself as a dentist, obtains a deposit for new teeth, & c., and decamps. Is accompanied by his wife, age 25 or 26, height about 5 ft. 4 in., complexion rather pale, hair dark brown. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Town Hall, Portsmouth. 23.— Southampton ( Borough).— For being concerned with a man in custody for highway robbery with violence CALLAGHAN, age about 30, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion sallow, hair and slight moustache dark ; dress, dark grey mixture coat, dark blue vest, grey trousers, blue serge cap, lace boots. MICHAEL DAVEY, alias McDAVEY and MICK DAVIS, age about 25, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion, hair, and moustache dark, left hand withered, which he usually carries in liis coat pocket ; dress, black cloth coat and vest, brown or grey trousers, a fire- man's blue or black cap, old lace boots. Both are ship's firemen, and natives of Liverpool. Information to the Chief Constable, South- ampton. ISLE of WIGHT. 24.- Newport ( County).— For stealing, 4th inst., at Freshwater, a pepper and salt coloured morn- ing coat 3 bone buttons on front; 1 pair blue serge cycling breeches, with belt loops round waist; 1 light soft felt hat; 1 Hamblyns field service bandage ; 1 10^- feet newly varnished Dinghy boat, fitted with centre plate, small locker, and 1 pair of oars ; EDWARD JOHNSON, age 18, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion fresh, dimple on chin, hair dark brown, eyes blue, dagger on right forearm, sup- posed wearing the stolen clothes and regimental boots. A seaman; native of Canada. Is a deserter from the Royal Artillery. Information to Inspector Coleman Newport. KENT. 25.— Chatham ( County).— For deserting his wife and child— CHARLES WINTER, alias C. H. CRAWFORD, age 22, height 5 ft. 5 in., stout build, complexion pale, hair dark brown, clean shaved, eyes blue, birthmark similar to a cut ( with 2 or 3 stitches) on back of neck ; dress, black rough serge jacket and vest, white moleskin trousers, cloth cap, light lace boots. Lacy, Chatham 20.— Folkestone ( Borough).— For stealing, Oth inst., a lady's small gun- metal watch, steel open face, horizontal, keyless, No. 31918, short gold curb pattern chain, marble pig, gold locket with hair at back, small oxydised knife '' K" thereon, attached ; 1 gold heart shaped pendant, opal in centre, diamonds at intervals around, small gold twisted pattern chain, bow shaped, attached ; 1 enamelled jubilee shilling brooch, 1 Portuguese gold chain forming a bracelet, snap fastening small safety chain attached ; 1 lady's gold Geneva watch, open face, white dial— A MAN, age about 30, height 5 ft. 5 or 0 in., complexion fair, hair and moustache light, eyes ( small) blue ; dress, dark morning coat, greyish trousers and vest, blue tie, white straw hat with black and white or blue and white striped band, white shoes, was wearing a ( supposed) gold chain, large links across vest, and a gold ring. LINCOLNSHIRE. 27. — Lincoln ( County). — For stealing £ 7 10s„ 8th inst.— A YOUTH, age 19 ( looks younger), height 5 ft. 1 or 2 in., complexion dark ( slightly freckled), hair dark brown, small mole back of neck ; dress, when last seen, old brown or bluish grey cloth jacket, greyish vest, bluish trousers ( nearly new), brown cap, old lace boots. A tramping labourer. Stated he was a native of Clitheroe, and that he had served in a military band. Information to Supt. Clarke, Lincoln. NORFOLK. 28.— Norwich ( City).— For obtaining money by false pretences— F. MIDDLETON, age 25 to 27, height about 5 ft. 9 in., complexion dark, hair and slight moustache dark brown, of good address ; dress, light grey suit, black and white straw hat, carried a black mackintosh. Supposed a travelling jeweller. He presented in payment of some goods a worthless cheque for more than their value, and received the balance in cash. Has in his possession a cheque book on the Munster and Leinster Bank, Dublin. Is accompanied by a woman ( supposed his wife), age about 25, of good address. Warrant issued. He called at a shop and requested to see some rings, and whilst the assis- tant's attention was drawn to another customer he abstracted from a tray brought for his inspection the ring described above and substituted a brass one set with paste diamond.
