THE! GAZETTE PUBLISHED BY AUTHORITY. NEW SERIES. FRIDAY, APRIL 1, 1898. REGULATION VOL. XV., No. 1488 1. All announcements for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communications relating to them, should be addressed to THE EDITOR OF THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SOOTLAND YARD, LONDON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 3 Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all eases where a reward is offered, the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions must be clearly stated. 5. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offetwes, and engravings of stolen property will be insetted at a cost of 15*. per portrait, and of Is. 6d. per photo- qraph or sketch of a stolen article. 6. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of tnt less rank than Superintendent; and, if the name of such person is required to be inserted and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. 9. 10. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. Annouiwements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and, as far as practicable, they are alphabetically arranged by counties. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be insetted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the anmuncement, for insertion in the next issue. In all cases the officer signing the request for the insertion of any aniwuncement will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so us to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only ; they must be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in adcatwe, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, by Postal Order or In, Post. Office Order payable at Parliament Street Post Office. 13. Announcements concerning propetty lost or persons missing can only be accepted on payment, and the charges for the insertion of the same will be given on application. R. ANDERSON, Editor. Letters relating to criminal business addressed by other Police Forces to Scotland Yard, are very frequently de- layed, owing to the envelopes containing them being directed incorrectly or in inade- quately. The address is that of a newspaper shop, where the swindler has letters taken in for him. The victims are offered work in addressing envelopes. Stated he was a Hungarian. He re- presented that he was a traveller for a firm of Mineral Water Manufacturers at Johannesburg, and required the money to release his goods from the Custom House. Warrant issued. 2.— E Division.— For embezzlement to the amount of £ 286 during the past 15 months— CHARLES MORRIS, age about 30, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion fresh, hair and moustache brown ( in- clined to sandy), eyes grey; dress, blue melton over- coat with velvet collar, blue serge jacket suit, black hard felt hat. A native of South Wales. Warrant issued. 3.— E Division.— For obtaining money by false pretences— JOHN C. PEARSON, age 35, height 5 ft. 8J in., complexion pale, hair brown, eyes blue, faint cut marks on forehead, blue cut on bridge of nose, wears glasses ; dress, dark clothes, black hard felt hat. A clerk ; native of Stockport. He calls on solicitors, representing that he has been robbed, and states he is related to one of their clients, obtains an advance to enable him to proceed to his home. Warrant issued. 4. — W Division- — For larceny — HILDA LUSON, age 16, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion dark, hair black ( may be dyed auburn), eyes blue, wears a club ( right) boot, walks with a stick; dress, black costume, black straw hat, trimmed yellow satin ribbon and two black feathers, white wool gloves. A native of Peckham. Warrant issued. Information to be forwarded to the Metropolitan Police Office, New Scotland Yard, S. W. CITY OF LONDON. 5.— For stealing £ 121 19s. 9d. — ERNEST HERBERT SWEET, late of 17, Alderney Street, Bow, London, « E., age about 23. height 5 ft. 9 in., slight build, complexion fresh, hair curly, no hair on face, wearing dark clothes. A clerk. Warrant issued. 6.— For obtaining money by false pretences — t MAN, age about 54, height 5 ft. 4 in., thick set, shor neck, complexion fresh, hair ( inclined to curl) and moustache sandy ( turning grey), bunions on both feet ( prominent), appearance of a heavy drinker. He advertises for clerks and obtains cash securities. Has used the names of Alexander Campbell and Churchill. Was recently in business at Southend as a Transfer Agent. Warrant issued. 7.— For forging and uttering a cheque, thereby obtaining £ 920, also obtaining a cheque book by a forged order— a man who gave the name of W. J. IVE, age about 45, height 5 ft. 8 in., thick set, com- plexion ruddy, round face, hair dark brown, heavy moustache slightly grey; dress, dark blue overcoat velvet collar, high silk hat, of smart appearance. Had with him 2 bags ( 1 a large brown Gladstone, the other, smaller, red). Warrant issued. Information to Supt. McWilliam, 26 Old Jewry, E. C. BERKSHIRE. 8.— New Windsor ( Borough). — For larceny ( lodgings)— A MAN, age 25, height 5 t. 7 in., round face, clean shaved, hair brown; dress, black morning coat, dark trousers, white front and tie, black silk hat, carried tan gloves, and wore a long silver or steel chain. Information to Head Constable Armour, New Windsor. CHESHIRE. 9. — Altrincham ( County). — For stealing a " Premier, 1895, Roadster"' bicycle, No. 92564, " Dunlop Welch " tyres ; a pair of strong lace boots, size 8; and a dark tweed coat and vest— FRANK RICHARD HAMILTON, age 23, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, clean shaved ; wearing the stolen coat and vest, dark trousers, light cap. A groom; native of Newchurch, near War- rington. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Denbigh ( Count!/).— For larceny at Colwyn Bay— ALBERT JOHN DUROSE, age about 85, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., stout build, complexion fresh, hair black, moustache dark brown, eyes brown, appearance of a heavy drinker. A barman Native of Chester. Is fond of billiards. He left Colwyn Bay for Chester, accompanied by his wife and two children. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. DERBYSHIRE. 12.— Chesterfield ( Borough).— For failing to report at Chesterfield— Licence holder MARY ANN BROWN, alias AGNES OAKEY, WILSON, COOPER, McGUIRE, HARRIS, BURNS and HAWKEY, Office No. 712- 98, age 61, height 5 ft. 1 in., complexion fresh, hair brown ( turning grey), eyes grey ( cast in left), scar centre forehead, right temple, each eyebrow and bridge of nose, 2nd left thumb, back left forefinger, right forearm and inside right wrist, red mole below right eye, slight varicose veins both legs, tattooed GT, JS, EB, left upper arm, and JW, AR right upper arm. Hawker, native of Sheffield. Sentenced at Wakefield County Sessions, 17th Octo- ber, 1892, to 5 years penal servitude for larceny ( person), and at Chesterfield Borough Petty Sessions, 6th October, 1897, to 7 days hard labour and licence revoked for drunkenness. Liberated on 2nd licence, 24th February last, into Chesterfield Police District. S. 22. Information to Head Constable Emery, Chester- field. DORSETSHIRE. 13.— Dorchester ( Count)/).— For pretending to tell fortunes— MADAME NORDIC A ( supposed false), age 80, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., complexion pale, very thin face, hair brown; dress, black jacket and skirt, very small bonnet trimmed red, black veil, may be wearing a brown jacket, brown fur on sleeves, carried a small black hand bag. A native of Bath. Has been travelling the country pretending to tell fortunes by palmistry. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Burden, Dorchester. HAMPSHIRE. 14.— Aldershot ( County).— For stealing, 19th or 20th ult.. 2 suits of clothes ( 1 light check, 1 dark brown); 2 pairs button boots ; 3 light colour flannel shirts, nearly new; 12 white pocket handkerchiefs, coloured borders; 1 silver mounted brown twisted walking stick; 1 clothes brush; 1 set gold sleeve links and studs; 1 lady's gold ring, set diamond; 1 lady's silver watch and Victoria chain— A MAN, age 23, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion fresh, hair and slight moustache light brown, eyes grey, cross right forearm, sailor left forearm, bad upper front teeth ; wearing the stolen check trousers, brown jacket and vest, black felt hat, red tie, new button boots, carries a walking stick. May endeavour to enlist. Information to Supt. Hawkins, Aldershot. HEREFORDSHIRE. 15.— Ledburv ( County).— CHARLES DAVIES, Case No. 26, 8th October, 1897. Not to be arrested. Warrant withdrawn. HERTFORDSHIRE. 16. — Hemel Hempstead ( County). — For deserting his children— FREDERICK MONGER, age 48, height about 5 ft. 4 in., complexion fresh, hair ( bald on top) dark brown, deep scar bottom of back, right eye paralysed, right hand closed through rheumatism, walks lame ; dress, 2 jackets ( 1 light cloth, other brown cord), brown cord trousers, cap. A fitter's labourer. Native of Great Berk- hampsted. Warrant issued. 17.— Hemel Hempstead ( County). — For deserting his children — GEORGE LEE, alias CODGER, age 39, height 5 ft. 7 in., slight build, complexion sallow, hair ( turning grey), moustache and eyes brown ; dressed as a labourer. A bird catcher. Native of Hemel Hempstead. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Frogley, Hemel Hempstead. KENT. 18. — Sittingbourne ( County).— For leaving his two children chargeable to the Milton Union— PHILIP HEATHEIELD, alias HOPPY, age 44, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion dark, hair and eyes brown, left leg shorter than the right; dress, cord vest, with fustian sleeves, black cord trousers patched on one knee, dark cloth cap, heavy lace boots. May be employed at a brickfield. Warrant issued. 19.— Sittingbourne ( County).— For leaving his wife and children chargeable to the Milton Union— WILLIAM DEVERSON, age 24, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 in., complexion fair, full face, hair light brown, slight moustache ( light), eyes grey; dress, long black coat with velvet collar, light tweed vest and trousers, blue cap, light lace boots. LANCASHIRE. 20.— Bootle ( Borough).— For stealing from her lodgings, between 14th and 16th ult., £ 16 10s. and a lady's 9- carat gold dress ring set with blue stones and pearls, one blue stone missing — CATHERINE FITZGERALD, age 25 to 30, height about 5 ft., complexion fresh, hair light brown with curly fringe, eyes grey, thick lips; dress, dark green straw hat trimmed with green shot silk ribbon, plaid blouse ( bluish colour), green plaid tie, black skirt, green smooth cloth double- breasted jacket, brown kid gloves, lace boots. Stated that she was a native of Belfast. She left behind a yellow- painted tin box, containing— a lady's silver Geneva watch, No. 10950; 1 pair pearl cuff links ; 1 oval- shaped gold brooch, minus pin ; 2 gold earrings ( drop) broken ; 1 plain silver ring ; 2 black skirts, lined, H I stitched with white cotton on band of one ; 1 white blouse, fancy needlework on breast; 1 red flannelette blouse, with small black spots; 1 white cotton nightdress; 1 lady's black jacket ( short), leg of mutton sleeves, bound with black cord braid ; 1 blue apron with white stripes ; 1 apron with pink, white and blue stripes ; 2 white linen aprons, full size, with neck bands ; 1 blue table cloth with white flowers, worn ; 1 white linen table cloth, worn ; 1 sailor jacket with pearl buttons, trimmed with white braid ( to fit a boy of 5 years); 1 black chip straw hat; 1 pair white cotton drawers, needlework round bottoms; 1 white bath towel with red stripes across ends; 1 bunch of small keys with ivory tablet attached, on which is scratched M. MANN ; 1 imitation crocodile- skin belt with steel fittings and square buckle; 1 piece of cloth, black and electric blue; 1 sheet of music, entitled " Say a kind word when you can"; 1 pillow case, marked S. T. Lloyd 1330- 1. Supposed a travelling thief, as property was found in her box which has been identified as having been stolen. Information to the Chief Constable, Bootle. LINCOLNSHIRE. XI REWARD. 21.— Grantham ( Borough).— For leaving his son chargeable to the Grantham Union— EDWARD WILLIAM FOX, age 43, height 5 ft. 4$ in., weight 11 stone, round features, hair and moustache dark ginger, scar from bite on one ear and hand. A fitter. Warrant issued. Photograph can be seen on application. The above reward will be paid by the Guardians of the Grantham Union for such information as will lead to the arrest of Fox. Information to Chief Constable Jones, Grantham. 22.— Grimsby ( Borough)— For stealing a cash box containing a bank pass book and cheque book on Messrs. Smith, Ellison & Co.' s Bank, Lincoln, and about £ 8— ERNEST HENTSCHEL, alias F. SMITH, age about 21, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., com- plexion sallow, hair brown, small moustache dark brown, eyes brown, 4 upper front teeth missing; dress, black coat and vest, light grey trousers, black felt hat, wearing a silver watch- chain with bunch of keys attached. A commission agent or traveller. He sings at concert rooms at public- houses. Is known at Manchester and Birmingham. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Pickersgill, Grimsby. MONMOUTHSHIRE. 23.— Newport ( Borough). — For embezzling, 22nd Feb., about £ 20— JAMES STRATTON, age 26, height 5 ft. 6 in., slight build, complexion dark, hair dark brown, moustache brown ; dress, usually grey coat and vest, white moleskin trousers, grey cap, heavy boots. A grocer's porter. Photograph may be seen on application. Warrant issued. 24.— Newport [ Borough).— For embezzling, 7th ult., £ 2 8s.— ISAAC WILLIAMS, age 35, height 5 ft. 6^ in., complexion rather dark, hair and mou- stache dark, eyes dark blue, small mole right muscle and left elbow. A baker; native of St. Arvans, near Chepstow. Frequents common lodging houses. Was sentenced 23rd December, 1895, at Newport, to one month imprisonment for larceny. Warrant issued. Information to Head Constable Sinclair, Newport. NORFOLK. 25.— Thetford ( County). — For embezzling £ 5 14s. lid.— EDWARD GARNHAM, age 29, height about 5 ft. 7 in., rather stout build, com- plexion florid, full face, hair ( inclined to curl) and moustache light brown ; dress, light tweed pepper and salt jacket and vest, light fine ribbed cord trousers, light cloth peak cap, lace boots. A labourer; has been employed as a baker during the last 18 months; native of Feltwell, Norfolk. May seek em- ployment at buildings in course of erection. Ab- sconded 12th ult. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Wright, East Harling, or Inspector Simpson, Thetford. 26.— Norwich ( City).— PHILIP KEYMER, Case No. 26, 14th January last, not now wanted. Warrant withdrawn. NOTTINGHAMSHIRE. 27.— Mansfield ( County).— For stealing, 14th ult., a light grey Newmarket overcoat, velvet collar, black and white bone buttons, one missing from back, 2 slits up back, coloured stripe lining, 3 pockets each side— ALEXANDER GRAHAM, alias STEWART, age 33, looks younger, height about 5 ft. 6 in., com- plexion very fresh, hair red, clean shaved, curls his hair on forehead; dress, dark coat and vest, black trousers, dark cap, may be wearing the stolen coat. Frequents public houses; talks of football and draws with burnt matches. Supposed a native of Glasgow. Stated he was a bicycle repairer. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Hensley, Mansfield. STAFFORDSHIRE. 28. — Burslem ( County). — For deserting his family, 1st ult.— JOHN HARRISON, age 36, height 5 ft. 9£ in., complexion sallow, hair dark brown, eyes brown, cut on bridge of nose, several coal marks on face ; dress, dark coat and vest, cord trousers, blue cap. A collier. Native of Tunstall. Has worked in Lancashire and Yorkshire. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Supt. Hill, Burslem. 29.— Tettenhall ( County). — For failing to notify change of residence— Supervisee GEORGE BRINDLEY, Office No. 186- 98, age 24, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion pale, hair light brown, eyes blue, female tattooed on right forearm, cut mark over left eyebrow, right ankle has been broken. Native of Willenhall. Dress, blue jacket and vest, brown corduroy trousers, white muffler, black hard felt hat and blucher boots. He is a persistent shop thief, and will probably be found travelling the country as a chimney- sweep, accompanied by his wife, staying at common lodging- houses. Sentenced at Wolverhampton Sessions, 8th January, 1897, to 12 calendar months hard labour and 2 years police supervision for larceny. Liberated 7th January last. 4128. 30.— Tettenhall ( County).— For stealing, be- tween 11th and 16th ult., 5 cwt. of potatoes at Bushbury— WILLIAM THOMAS RAY, age 28, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., slight build, complexion fresh, hair and moustache brown ; dress, dark brown coat and vest, dark cloth trousers, blucher boots. A native of Bushbury. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Price, Tettenhall, Wolver- hampton. 31.— Wolverhampton ( Borough).— For steal- ing a hand saw ( recovered), 7th ult.— WALTER BARTLETT, age about 38, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., slight build, complexion fresh, hair ( turning grey) and heavy moustache dark brown ; dress, blue serge jacket and vest, grey mixture cloth trousers, collar and tie. A carpenter; stated he was a native of Harbourne, Birmingham. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Wolver- hampton. FRIDAY, APRIL < S, 1898. THE POLICE GAZETTE. . NORTHAMPTONSHIRE. 32.— Northampton ( County)— Woodcut por- trait and description of Expiree WILLIAM FOSTER, alias WILLIAM KIFF, WILLIAM EATON, WILLIAM CORNWALL and GEORGE BAKER, Office No. 844- 96, whose apprehension is sought on a warrant for housebreaking. Age 41, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion pale, hair light brown, eyes blue. A labourer, native of Hollowav, London ; blue dot back of light forearm, brown birthmark on left buttock and 2 centre of back, scar left wrist, 2nd left finger and 3rd and 4th right fingers, both big toe- nails deformed. Sentenced at North London Sessions, 4th December, 1893, to 3 years penal ser- vitude for larceny ( person), and has also been con- victed in London, Kent and Surrey for housebreaking and warehouse- breaking. Has recently been residing in Leicester with a woman who is now in custody. This man escaped from police 22nd ult. when about to ba apprehended, leaving behind 3 loaded revolvers, housebreaking implements and his coat, boots and hat. His arrest is sought by Metropolitan Police for failing to report ( see Gazette, 1st January, 1897). Information to Supt. Webster, Northampton. YORKSHIRE ( WEST RIDING). 33.— Barnsley ( County).— Woodcut portrait and description of GEORGE HEATH NAYLOR, late Postmaster at Hoyland Nether, whose apprehension is sought for embezzling £ 66 6s. 5d., age 35 ( looks older), height 5 ft. 6 in., well- built, complexion fair, hair and moustache dark, eyes supposed blue, bad teeth; dress, blue overcoat with velvet collar, black ccat and vest, light trousers, light lace boots; of good appearance. A total abstainer and prominent Wesleyan. May endeavour to leave the country. Absconded 3rd ult. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT. 64.— Criminal Investigation Department ( Correspondence No. 126359).— Attention is directed to JAMES EDGEL, a private of the Cheshire Regiment, stationed at Buttevant, about whom numerous complaints have been received as to his obtaining money by false pretences. His usual practice is to call ( in uniform) upon Wesleyan ministers, representing that he is a Sergeant or Corporal of the above Regiment, and telling a plausible story as to his having become short of money, borrows a sum to enable him to proceed to Ireland, promising to return the loan in a few days. The man is a deserter from the Cheshire Regiment and may be arrested as such ( See POLICE GAZETTE, 8th ult., Office No. 16). He was last heard of in the vicinity of Worcester and may be making his way towards Oxford and London.
