All announcements for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communications upon them, should be addressed to THE EDITOR OF THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YARD, LOXDON, S. W. • 2. Particulars concerning persons u- hose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enab e action to be taken upon them by another force. 3. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions be clearly stated. 5. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property, will be prominently inserted, with detailed particulars, at a cost of 15s. per portrait, and of 7s. 6d. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, including the expense of engraving on wood. 6. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and, if the name of such person be required to be inserted, and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property mutt be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. A nnouncements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, ar. d ari alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. Theforcewhich causes particulars concerning delinquents or sto'tn property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their appreh ension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases, the officer signing the request for insertion of any announcement, will be wholly re sponsible for any proceedings which may result from such publicaton. 11. Announcements for tXi Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be dearly written on one side of the paper only, be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, Xtw Scotland Yard, by cheque, crossed " Drummond < k Co.," Post Office Order payable at Parliament- st., Postal Order, or in Stamps. 13. Advertisements are accepted for the POLICE GAZETTE throuoh Mr. James Willing, 125, Strand, London, the sole Agent, who will furnish the rates on application. 14. Cities and Boroughs therein, arranged in strict alphabetical order. 2.— Any additional copies of the GAZETTE beyond the number at present supplied will be forwarded on application in the form set forth in circular of the 7th of November, 1883. 3.— It is particularly requested that any com- plaints as to the non- delivery or of irregularity in the date of delivery of the POLICE GAZETTE, may be at once notified to the Editor. SPECIAL NOTICE. THE amount of stolen property at pre- sent " circulated " by the Metropolitan Police lias become so inordinately large as to prejudice or destroy the practical value of the records, and it has been found necessary to limit it very consider- ably. It has been decided, therefore, to discontinue the " circulation " in Infor- mations and Pawnbrokers' Lists of all property stolen in the provinces, unless where there are grounds for believing that the property has found its way to the Metropolis. Chief Constables are re- quested accordingly, when forwarding lists of stolen property to Scotland Yard, to send with tliem a letter to that e: ffect. And if bills or circulars are received in future, unaccompanied by such a letter, it will be assumed that the " circulation" of the particulars they contain is not desired. The same course will be followed with respect to property lost and persons missing. APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT. METROPOLITAN FOUCE DISTRICT. 1.— C Division. — For larceny ( bailee) — SPENCER GRANT, age 33, height 5 ft. 9 in., com plexion and hair dark, eyes ( cast in one) blue ; dress, long light Newmarket overcoat, dark trousers, black hard felt hat. A horse dealer. Warrant issued. 2.— F Division.— For stealing £ 35— FREDE- RICK GRANGER, age 25, height 5 ft. 6 in., com- plexion pale, hair and moustache very light, eyes grey, left hip deformed, and walks lame, woman tattooed in blue and red right forearm, star back of left hand ; dress, grey jacket suit, black hard felt hat, lace boots. A native of Wandsworth. In- valided from the Army Service Corps. Frequents music halls. Warrant issued. 3.— L Division.— Woodcut portrait and descrip- tion of MAUD GREGORY alias MAUD ESMER- ALDA McKENZIE and ALICE ELLIS, whose apprehension is sought on a Coroner's warrant for child murder. Age 25 or 26, height 5 ft. 6 in., corn- face, hair dark; wearing dark clothes. A domestic servant; believed to be a native of Chipping Norton. Has friends at East Greenwich. Information to Capt. Henderson, Head Constable, Reading. BUCKINGHAMSHIRE. 5.— Aylesbury ( County).— For converting to his own use £ 308 15s. ( Fraudulent Trusteeship)— LLOYD REDDING, age 38, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., stout build, complexion fresh, hair dark brown, moustache dark, eyes hazel; dress, when last seen, dark overcoat, grey trousers, black hard felt hat; an auctioneer and land agent. Native of Great Missenden. Absconded 5th inst. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Pitson, Aylesbury. 6.— Buckingham ( County).— For deserting his children, leaving them chargeable to the Common Fund of the Buckingham Union — JOHN WHITE, age 57, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion pale, hair ( turning grey) brown, eyes blue, high cheek bones; dress, dark suit, black hard felt hat, all very old and greasy. A butcher. Native of Steeple Claydon. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Clarke, Buckingham. plexion and hair dark, eyes ( small) grey, flat nose, wide mouth ; dress, black skirt and bodice, black jacket or fawn colour cape, black toreador hat. Is believed to have friends at Shrewsbury and Bristol, whom she may visit, or may be found in the com- pany of prostitutes. CARDIGANSHIRE. 7.— Aberystwyth ( County).— For stealing, 8th BERKSHIRE. 4.— Reading ( Borough).— For stealing a lady's gold watch and chain; and £ 2— ELLEN HARRI- SON, age 19, medium height, complexion fresh, full inst., a watch and chain ( recovered) and a silver brooch, at Taliesin— JOHN WILLIAMS ( supposed false), age 20 to 25, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., complexion dark, hair ( inclined to curl in front, combed low on forehead) and eyes brown ; dress, dark coat and vest, light trousers, brown cap, light boots. He en- gages lodgings for 6 or 8 weeks, stating he is either a mechanic or railway signalman, and decamps after staying one night. Information to Supt. Phillips, Aberystwyth. DUMFRIESSHIRE. 10.— Dumfries ( County).— For stealing, 28th ult. 1 grey tweed jacket and vest; 1 pair grey tweed check " trousers ; 1 round black felt hat, " Russian lea- ther " stamped on band inside; 1 black tie, with blue stripes; 1 pair strong lace boots; 1 pair brown marled socks; 1 pair Shetland grey drawers; 1 silver geneva lever watch, Nos. 0935, and 153336 ( 1 no. on works, the other on scales), " J. E. D." on back, " Kendal and Dent," on dial; 1 silver albert chain, curb pattern;; 1 brown leather purse, containing £ 3 ; 1 wooden pipe, straight stem, silver- mounted— JAMES McNAUGHT, or McKNIGHT, age about 25, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., broad face, hair and moustache dark brown; wearing stolen clothing. Has been em- ployed as quarry labourer, and may seek similar em- ployment. A native of Dumfries. Has served 7 years in the Seaforth Highlanders, and now belongs to the Army Reserve. May re- enlist. Warrant issued. M.," maker's name on works; 1 18- carat gold keeper ring, single diamond, sunk setting; 1 gold dress ditto, set 4 pearls in a row ( 1 missing); 1 round gold brooch, about the size of a two- shillingpiece, diamond in centre, and earrings to match; 1 gold cameo brooch, lady's head, earrings to match; 1 large oval- shaped silver locket, " M. Mather" engraved thereon; 1 silver pencil- case; 1 cat's- eye stone; 1 red morocco purse; a cash- box, containing £ 11 and the deeds of a house, at 21, Wel- lington Street, hearing the names of Margaret Banks, Stephen Harper and Alderson— MICHAEL DUNN, age 50, height about 5 ft., stout build, com- plexion fresh, round face, hair and moustache ( turn- ing grey) brown, eyes blue; dress, blue or black jacket and vest, blue serge trousers, blue cloth sailor's cap with broad band and cloth peak. Carried a white willow oblong basket, handle on top. A ship's steward; sometimes employed as a hotel waiter. Speaks French and Italian fluently. He left here on 9th inst., supposed en route for the South of France, accompanied by an Italian woman. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. A native of Morley, near Leeds. Sentenced at Durham Quarter Sessions, 1st July, 1895, to 3 years penal servitude for larceny. Licenced 29th September, 1897. B L V, 675. A marine fireman; native of Cardiff. Warrant issued. 18.— Cardiff ( Borough).— For obtaining 12s. by false pretences, 2nd inst.— W. WELDON, a ship's steward, age about 50, height about 6 ft., stout build, complexion fresh, round face, hair ( turning grey) brown, eyes blue, rather long nose; dress ( when last seen), dark blue coat and vest, greyish, trousers, hard felt hat. GLOUCESTERSHIRE. 20.— Dursley ( County).— For obtaining £ 3 by false pretences— SAMUEL EGERTON ( supposed false), age about 35, height 5 ft. 6 in., slightly round shouldered, complexion fair, hair and moustache sandy; dress, light brown or plaid suit, turned down collar and front, dark tie, soft brown felt hat. He represented himself as an agent for a brewery company. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Hopkins, Dursley. HAMPSHIRE. 21.— Bournemouth ( County).— For stealing, 5th inst., 12 silver spoons, shell pattern, some with King George s head, and some with Queen Victoria's head on back of handles; 1 pair plain silver sugar tongs, very large pattern ; 2 jubilee shillings ; 2 fourpenny pieces and £ 18 gold— A MAN, age 32, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion fair, hair light brown, eyes grey, small blue abscess mark side of nose, front teeth deficient, walks stiff on one leg; dr? ss, Chesterfield overcoat, grey suit, light check cap, brown boots. THOMAS DOUGLAS, age about 24, height about 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fair, hair very light, clean- shaved; dress, long brown over- | coat, soft felt hat, dented at top. Joiners. Frogley, Hemel Hempstead. 23.— Ware ( County).— For obtaining £ 2 by false pretences— HARRY BAKER, age about 33, height about 5 ft. 6 in., complexion florid, hair and mous- tache brown, dress, black morning coat and vest ( coat much faded and worn), light trousers, frayed at bottoms, light cloth cap. Carries a stick. He re- presented himself as an agent for Singer Sewing Machine Company. May be found in company of Insurance Agents. WTarrant Issued. Information to Superintendent Wood, Ware. KENT. 24.— Canterbury ( County).— For failing to report — Supervisee ARTHUR STEPHENS, alias STE- VENS, Office No. 2G41- 96, age 37, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion sallow, hair dark brown, eyes blue, birth- mark bend left elbow and right of back, scar left thumb and corner, mole right elbow. A native of Canterbury. Sentenced, at Chelmsford Quarter Ses- sions, 23rd May, 1894, to 3 years penal servitude and 1 year police supervision, for larceny ( servant). Wood, Canterbury 25.— Chatham ( County).— For absconding fronr. his bail, charged with stealing a euphonium— WIL- LIAM SHAKESPERE PHASEY, age 32, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion ruddy, full red face, hair light brown, moustache very light, scar on bridge of nose. Is a deserter from the Royal Engineers' band, and will, no doubt, seek employment in other bands. Warrant issued. Information to Supt, Lacy, Chatham. 26.— Sandgate( Coitnty).— Forembezzling,£ 4 9s. 5d. — EDWIN THOMAS BRIGGS, age 18, height 5 ft. 3 in., complexion dark, hair dark brown, eyes light blue; dress, black coat, blue guernsey, brown cord trousers. Has served in the Highland Light In- fantry, was invalided home from Malta about twelve months ago. A native of Ashford. Warrant issued. 27.— Sandgate ( County).— For stealing 1 white cricketing shirt, marked J. E.," and 1 grey flannel- ette shirt— GEORGE SMITH, age 20, height 5 ft, 8 in., complexion fresh, hair red, eyes grey; dress, military trousers, shirt and boots, and a jacket, much too small for him. A deserter from the West York- shire Regiment. Information to Supt, Waghorn, Sandgate. £ 1 REWARD. 28.— West Mailing (. County).— For deserting his wife and family— HENRY BRIDGER, age 27, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion fresh, hair and moustache light brown, eyes blue; dress, black monkey jacket, cord trousers, black cap. A cement labourer; native of East Mailing. Has been in the Artillery Volunteers. Warrant issued. The above reward will be paid by Mr. F. J. Allison, Clerk to the Mailing Board of Guardians, for the arrest of Bridger. £ 1 REWARD. 29— West Mailing {. County).— For deserting his wife and family— THOMAS STICKINGS, alias FOX, age 37, height 5 ft. 2 or 3 in., stout build, com- plexion fair, hair light brown, may be wearing light moustache, eyes blue, cut scar right side upper lip, mole left cheek, tattooed one forearm, walks badly; dress ( usually), black jacket, cord trousers and vest, black hard felt hat. A navvy; sometimes works with thrashing machines ; a native of Offham, Kent. Warrant issued. The above reward will be paid by Mr. F. J. Allison, Clerk to the Mailing Board of Guardians, for the arrest of Stickings. £ 1 REWARD. 30.— West Mailing ( County).— For deserting his children— ARTHUR ADAMS, age about 38, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., slight build, complexion fair, thin face, hair light, blind one eye ( scarcely visible). A billiard marker; has worked as a labourer. Warrant issued. The above reward will be paid by Mr. F. J. A barber. Styled himself " Professor Neat." Is fond of horse- racing, and may be found with racing men, or may be working at his trade. LANCASHIRE. 33.— Leigh ( County).— For assault on police, 9th inst.— MARTIN RANAGAN, or RALIGEN, age about 22, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion sandy, hair light brown, slight moustache light, cross- eyed ; dress, dark coat and vest, dark brown trousers, striped shirt, dark cap, lace boots. A collier. PATRICK MUR- PHY, age 29, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion fresh, hair dark, eyes grey, cut mark both arms and on bridge of nose; dress, dark coat and vest, brown cord trou- sers, dark cap. Higginbotham, Leigh. 34.— Prescot ( County).— For stealing, 15th inst., £ 8 19s. 6d. from his lodgings at Huyton— A MAN, aged 22, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., slight build, com- plexion dark, large nose, hair dark brown, slight moustache, dress light coloured dust coat, navy blue serge suit, blue tie, hard felt hat, with two holes each side, lace boots with broad soles, wore a Masonic signet ring on left little finger : a painter. Carried a black leather bag containing tools. Information to Supt. Baxendale, Prescot. 35.— Blackpool ( Borough).— For stealing 5 boxes; 1 ring ; 1 muffler ; 1 portmanteau ; a quantity of bed- ding; and £ 20— MARGARET HOPKINSON, age 37, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., complexion pale, hair dark, eyes brown.
