POLICE GAZETTE PUBLISHED BY AUTHORITY. NEW SERIES. FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 12, 1897. VOL. XIV., No. 1448. IFtEG- TJ LATIONS. 1. All announcements for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communications upon them, should be addressed to THE EDITOR OF THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YARD, LONDON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning persons ichose apprehension it sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enaJ* e action to be taken upon them by another force. 3. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions be clearly stated. 5. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property, will be prominently inserted, with detailed particulars, at a cost of 15s. per portrait, and of Is. 6d. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, including the expense of engraving on icood. 6. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rankthan Superintendent; and, if the name of such person be required to be inserted, and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chiej officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property mud be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and are alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen properly to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their appreh ension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases, the officer signing the request for insertion of any announcement, will be wholly re sponsible for any proceedings which may resxdt from such publication. 11. Announcenv. nls for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They viust be clearly written on one side of the paper only, be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, by cheque, crossed " Drummond « fc Co.," Post Office Order payable at Parliament- st.. Postal Order, or in Stamps. 13. Advertisements are accepted for the POLICE GAZETTE through Mr. James Willing, 125, Strand, London, the sole Agent, who will furnish the rates on application. 14. Cities and Boroughs therein, arranged in strict alphabetical order. 2.— Any additional copies of the GAZETTE beyond the number at present supplied will be forwarded on application in the form set forth in circular of the 7th of November, 1883. 3.— It is particularly requested that any com- plaints as to the non- delivery or of irregularity in the date of delivery of the POLICE GAZETTE, may be at once notified to the Editor. SPECIAL_ NOTICE. THE amount of stolen property at pre- sent " circulated" by the Metropolitan Police has become so inordinately large as to prejudice or destroy the practical value of the records, and it has been found necessary to limit it very consider- ably. It has been decided, therefore, to discontinue the " circulation" in Infor- mations and Pawnbrokers' Lists of all property stolen in the provinces, unless where there are grounds for believing that the property has found its way to the Metropolis. Chief Constables are re- quested accordingly, when forwarding lists of stolen property to Scotland Yard, to send with them a letter to that effect. And if bills or circulars are received in future, unaccompanied by such a letter, it will be assumed that the " circulation" of the particulars they contain is not desired. The same course will be followed with respect to property lost and persons APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT. METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT. 1.— D Division.— For stealing a bicycle, and several watches, etc.— GEORGE THOMPSON, nge about 22, height 5 ft. 3 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, clean shaved, speaks very broad Scotch; dress, long coat, soft felt hat, dented at top, or may be wearing cycle suit. A native of Galashiels, Selkirk. Warrant issued. 2.— G Division.— For obtaining, 30th ult., good* by a worthless cheque on the Discount Banking Company of England and Wales, Limited, Lothbury, E. C. ( now closed), HARRISON ( supposed false), age 45, height 5 ft. 7 in., stout build, com- plexion fresh, hair and moustache dark brown, eyes blue ; dress, dark brown tweed suit, black hard felt hat. He is believed to have about 20 more of these cheques in his possession. Warrant issued. 3.— L Division.— Woodcut portrait and descrip- tion of MAUD GREGORY alias MAUD ESMER- ALDA MCKENZIE AND ALICE ELLIS, WHOSE apprehension is sought on a Coroner's warrant for child murder. Age 25 or 26, height 5 ft. 6 in., com- plexion and hair darli, eyes ( small) grey, flat nose, wide mouth ; dress,' black skirt and bodice, black jacket or fawn colour cape, black toreador hat. Is believed to have friends at Shrewsbury and Bristol, whom she may visit, or may be found in the com- pany of prostitutes. MURDER. 4.— M Division.— For the murder of Richard Murphy, 10th April last— JAMES HERBERT, nge about 24, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., stout build, com- plexion fair, hair and slight moustache light brown, scar back of head and upper lip, " E. E. M . hearts and anchor right arm, dagger, star and dots left arm and hand. Is believed to have assumed the name of Wannup, and to be attending fairs, etc., with a boxing booth, in the company of a man named Selby. A native of Walworth, London. 5.— X Division. — For embezzling £ 31 lis., 15th September last— JAMES FRASER, age about 30, height 5 ft. 7i in., complexion florid, hair brown, moustache sandy; dress, black morning coat and vest, dark stripe trousers, black hard felt hat. Warrant issued. 6.— X Division.— For obtaining a piano by con- spiracy and fraud— JOHN BUTLER, alias PHILIP DINAN, JAMES WATKINS, GEORGE and JOHN CLARKE, age 32, height 5 ft. 8i in., com- plexion fair, hair dark brown, eyes blue, cross flags, crown and cross swords on right forearm, sailor sitting on a barrel holding a flag left forearm, bracelet left wrist, portion of ship back left hand, ring left middle finger; dress, when last seen, long fawn colour ptddock coat, black morning coat and vest, dark striped trousers, white collar, plaid tie, black hard felt hat. Is well known as a racecourse thief ; native of London. Has been previously con- victed at Kilmainham, Doncaster, Wolverhampton, and London. Warrant issued. DERBYSHIRE, 7.— Glossop ( Borough).— For failing to report — Licence Holder THOMAS LARKIN, alias THOMAS CAMPBELL and JAMES CAMPBELL, Office No. 3129- 97, age 38, height 5 ft. 4i in., com- plexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes blue, anchor, " T. L." and crossed flags outside and crossed flags inside left arm, left wrist and nose been broken, lost end 3rd right finger, scar each eyebrow, on chest, back and 2 right arm. Native of Glossop. Sen- tenced, at Derby Assizes, 11th July, 1895, to 3 years penal servitude, for larceny. Liberated on licence 19th October, 1897. V 215. Information to Chief Constable Hodgson, Glossop. DEVONSHIRE. 8.— Exeter ( County).— For failing to appear at last. Devon Sessions, on a charge of fraud— JOHN BUTLER, age about 28, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion, hair, slight moustache and eyes dark; dress, double- breasted blue serge coat, blue vest, trousers and cap. A hawker. ALFRED HENRY SCAINES CRUSE, age about 29, height 6 ft., complexion fresh, rather long features, hair, long moustache and eyes, brown. A draper's assistant; native of Ide, Exeter. Sentenced, at York Sessions, 3rd October, 1893, to 3 years penal servitude and 2 years police super- vision, for larceny; and at Beverley Sessions, 7tli April, 1896, to 12 months hard labour and licence revoked, for fraud. E. D." on back, " Kendal and Dent," on dial; 1 silver albert chain, curb pattern; ; 1 brown leather purse, containing £ 3 ; 1 wooden pipe, straight stem, silver- mounted— JAMES McNAUGHT, or McKNIGHT, age about 26, height 5 ft, 7 or 8 in., broad face, hair and moustache dark brown ; wearing stolen clothing. Has been em- ployed as quarry labourer, and may seek similar em- ployment. A native of Dumfries. Has served 7 years in the Seaforth Highlanders, and now belongs to the Army Reserve. May re- enlist. A native of Ingatestone. Ho represented himself as an agent for a brewery company. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Hopkins, Dursley. HERTFORDSHIRE. 17.— Hemel Hempstead ( County).— For rape, 24th ult., at Chorleywood— WILLIAM DOUGLAS, alias HOAR, age about 30, height about 5 ft. 8 in., hair and moustache brown ; dress, dark overcoat and trousers, black hard felt hat. THOMAS DOUGLAS, age about 24, height about 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fair, hair very light, clean- shaved; dress, long brown over- coat, soft felt hat, dented at top. Joiners. Sup- posed natives of London. They booked to Baker Street, London, on 24th ult. Photographs may be seen on application. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Frogley, Hemel Hempstead. KENT. 18.— Canterbury( Co « n/ y).— For failing to report — Supervisee ARTHUR STEPHENS alias STE- VENS, Office No. 2641- 96, age 37, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion sallow, hair dark brown, eyes blue, birth- mark bend left elbow and light of back, scar left thumb and corner, mole right elbow. A native of Canterbury. Sentenced, at Chelmsford Quarter Ses- sions, 23rd May, 1894, to 3 years penal servitude and 1 year police supervision, for larceny ( servant). Liberated on licence, 21st August, 1896. U 213. Supervision expires 23rd May, 1S98. Information to Supt. Wood, Canterbury 19.— Chatham ( County).— For absconding from his bail, charged with stealing a euphonium— WIL- LIAM SHAKESPERE PHASEY, age 32, height 5 ft, 8 in., complexion ruddy, full red face, hair light brown, moustache very light, scar on bridge of nose. Is a deserter from the Royal Engineers' band, and will, no doubt, seek employment in other bands. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Lacy, Chatham. 20.— Sandgate( Cownty).— For embezzling£ 4 9s. 5d. — EDWIN THOMAS BRIGGS, age 18, height 5 ft. 3 in., complexion dark, hair dark brown, eyes light blue; dress, black coat, blue guernsey, brown cord trousers. Has served in ; the Highland Light In- fantry, was invalided home from Malta about twelve months ago. A native of Ashford. Warrant issued. 21.— Sandgate ( County).— For stealing 1 white cricketing shirt, marked J. E.," and 1 grey flannel? ette shirt— GEORGE SMITH, age 20, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion fresh, hair red, eyes grey; dress, military trousers, shirt and boots, and a jacket, much too small for him. A deserter from the West York- shire Regiment. Information to Supt. Waghorn, Sandgate. £ 1 REWARD. 22.— West Malling ( County).— For deserting his wife and family— HENRY BRIDGER, age 27, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion fresh, hair and moustache light brown, eyes blue; dress, black monkey jacket, cord trousers, black cap. A cement labourer; native of East Mailing. Has been in the Artillery Volunteers. Warrant issued. The above reward will be paid by Mr. F. J. Allison, Clerk to tlhe Mailing Board of Guardians, for the arrest of Bridger. £ 1 REWARD. 23.— West Malling ( County).— For deserting his wife and family— THOMAS STICKINGS, alias FOX, ago 37, height 5 ft. 2 or 3 in., stout build, com- plexion fair, hair light brown, may be wearing light moustache, eyes blue, cut scar right side upper lip, mole left cheek, tattooed one forearm, walks badly; dress ( usually), black jacket, cord trousers and vest, black hard felt hat. A navvy; sometimes works with thrashing machines ; a native of Offham, Kent. Warrant issued. The above reward will be paid by Mr. F. J. Allison, Clerk to tlhe Mailing Board of Guardians, for the arrest of Stickings. £ 1 REWARD. 24.— West Malling ( County).— For deserting his children— ARTHUR ADAMS, age about 38, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., slight build, complexion fair, tihin face, hair light, blind ono eye ( scarcely visible). A billiard marker; has worked as a labourer. Warrant issued. The above reward will be paid by Mr. F. J. Allison, Clerk to the Malling Board of Guardians, for' the arrest of Adams. £ 1 REWARD. 25.— West Mailing ( County).— For deserting his wife and family— ALFRED YOUNG, age 43, height about 5 ft. 8 in. ; dress, old light cord suit, marked " Mailing Union." Warrant issued. The above reward will be paid by Mr. F. J. Allison, Clerk to tlhe Mailing Board of Guardians, for the arrest, of Young. Information to Supt. Hoare, West Mailing. 26.— Maidstone ( Borough). — For stealing £ 191 4s. 8id.— FRANK NEAT, age 30 to 32, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., slight build, complexion pale, hair dark brown, slight side whiskers and moustache, eyes ( rather sunken) grey or blue; dress, black morning coat and vest, light plaid trousers, cap, lace boots. A barber. Styled himself " Professor Neat." Is fond of horse- racing, and may be found with racing men, or may be working at his trade. Late Secretary to the Amalgamated Friendly Societies' Fete Com- mittee. ( See Case No. 21, 10th September last.) Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Mackintosh, Maid- stone. LANCASHIRE. 27.— Blackpool ( Borough).— For stealing 5 boxes; 1 ring; 1 muffler; 1 portmanteau; a quantity of bed- ding; and £ 20— MARGARET HOPKINSON, age 37, heiglht 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., complexion pale, hair dark, eyes brown. PHILIP LEIGHTON, age 29, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion pale, hair brown, eyes grey, heavy moustache ( curled at ends). A baker and con- fectioner. May be found living together. Warrant issued. 28.— Blackpool ( Borough).— For embezzlement — THOMAS TAYLOR, age about 32, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fair, hair and moustache light, several upper front teeth deficient, which causes him to speak as if slightly tongue- tied; dress, black ribbed jacket and vest, brown cord trousers ( nearly new), black cloth peak cap, blucher shoes. Was formerly a pawnbroker's assistant, but has lately been em- ployed delivering coals. Is fond of horse- racing. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Derham, Blackpool. 29.— Rochdale ( Borough).— For stealing, 17th ult., a long navy- blue overcoat, with belt, plaid lining — FRED DIXON ( supposed false), age about 24, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., complexion fair, hair and slight moustache sandy, rather large eyes, cut on upper lip. 30.— Rochdale ( Borough) — For stealing £ 11— ARTHUR SEED, age about 23, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, rather large eyes; dress, grey jacket and vest, light knee breeches, brown leggings, grey cap, button boots. A groom; sup- posed native of Bradford. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Buck, Rochdale. LINCOLNSHIRE. 31.— Bourne ( County).— For fraud, 28th ult.— A man, who gave the name of GEORGE HENRY READ, age about 45, height 5 ft, 10 in., slight buildr thin face, Roman nose, hair ( supposed slightly bald on top), beard and moustacihe dark ( may be turning grey), long thin hands and fingers; dress, dark coat, trousers of rather lighter material, blue neckerchief with white spots, black hard hat. He represented himself as an agent of the Boston Dock Company, and demanded payment on foreign parcels, which he stated were at the docks. Warrant Issued. Information to Supt. Arnold, Bourne. 32.— Sleaford ( County).— For embezzlement— FREDERICK TETSALL, age 25, height 5 ft. 2 or 3 in., complexion pale, hair, slight moustache and eyes dark; usually dressed in black coat and vest, grey trousers, light dust- coat, black felt hat. A mer- chant's clerk; native of Ipswich. Absconded 24tb September last. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. Information to Supt. Taylor, Sleaford. £ 1 REWARD. 33.— Grantham ( Borough).— For deserting his family, leaving them chargeable to the Grantham Union— JOHN TAYLOR, age 40 to 45, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., hair sandy, moustache and whiskers ginger, birthmark right side of neck resembling 2 or 3 rows of warts. A clerk; native of Louth, Lincolnshire. Warrant issued. The above reward will be paid by the Guardians of the Grantham Union for such information as will lead to the arrest of Taylor. Information to Chief Constable Jones, Grantham. LINLITHGOWSHIRE. 34.— Linlithgow ( County). — Woodcut portrait and description of JAMES DUFF, whose apprehen- sion is sought for stealing £ 8 2s. 6d., 9th ult., nt Broxburn, age 25, height 5 ft. S or 9 in., slight build, complexion fresh, full face, high cheek- bones, hair ligflit brown, moustache light, eyes blue, walks erect; dress ( when last seen), dark tweed suit, black felt hat, brown shoes. A painter; may be found at collieries or oil works. Has resided at Cowdenbeath, Fife, and Quarter Colliery, near Hamilton, Lanarkshire, nt which places lie was a member of a pipe band.. II © endeavoured to raise a pipe band at Broxburn, and after above sum was collected, he got possession T H E POLICE GAZETTE. of same on the pretence of buying instruments, and absconded. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Robinson, Linlithgow. MONMOUTHSHIRE. 35.— Monmouth { County).— For uttering a false deed, with intent to obtain £ 600, on 25th ult.— JAMES TURELL, or TYRELL ( supposed false), age about 30, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., complexion ruddy, hair brown ( inclined to sandy), moustache sandy, eyes brown; dress, dark grey slate colour suit and overcoat, brown check cap, plain shoes, dark tie. Of good appearance. He took lodgings at Basingstoke, where he got particulars of 4 villas, upon which he attempted to borrow the money. The conveyance and abstract of title purported to be prepared by a solicitor at Salisbury. Warrant issued. Information to Capt. Parker, Supt., Monmouth. NORFOLK. 36.— Norwich ( City).— For wilfully neglecting his five children— JOHN AMIS, age 47, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes grey, may be growing a beard. A native of Wickmere, Norfolk. may seek employment as a hackney carriage driver. HARRIET LLOYD, alias WADE ( with whom the above cohabited), age 48, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion pale, hair ( turning grey) brown, eyes hazel, face some- what sunken ; dress, crepon skirt, red shoulder- cape or shabby fur- lined cloak, and bonnet. A native of " Wymondham. Warrant issued. Information, to Chief Constable Winch, Norwich. STAFFORDSHIRE. 37.— Leek ( County). — For stealing £ 150— ARTHUR SPARKS EVERSHED, age about 45, Sieight 5 ft. 5 in., complexion fresh, hair ( bald at back of head) and moustache light sandy, eyes grey, boil scars back of neck; dress, light tweed suit and round felt hat, or black coat and vest, blue stripe trousers and silk hat.
