All announcements for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communications upon them, should be addressed to THE EDITOR OF THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YARD, LONDON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought trill be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enab e action to be taken upon them by another force. 3. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions be clearly stated. 5. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property, will be promiTiently inserted, with detailed particulars, at a cost of 15s. per portrait, and of 7s. 6d. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, including the expense of engraving on wood. 6. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a per son, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and, if the name of such person be required to be inserted, and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. A nnouncements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number ar. d are alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force, which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted m the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their appreh tnsion or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases, the officer signing the request for insertion of any announcement, will be wholly re sponsible for any proceedings which may result from such publicaton. ' 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only, be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, by cheque, crossed " Drummond < L- Co.," Post Office Order payable at Parliament- st., Postal Order, or in Stamps. 13. SPECIAL NOTICE. THE amount of stolen property at pre- sent " circulated " by the Metropolitan Police lias become so inordinately large as to prejudice or destroy tlie practical value of the records, and it has been found necessary to limit it very consider- ably. It has been decided, therefore, to discontinue the " circulation" in Infor- mations and Pawnbrokers' Lists of all property stolen in the provinces, unless where there are grounds for believing that the property has found its way to the Metropolis. Chief Constables are re- quested accordingly, when forwarding lists of stolen property to Scotland Yard, to send with them a letter to that effect. And if bills or circulars are received in future, unaccompanied by such a letter, it will be assumed that the " circulation" of the particulars they contain is not desired. The same course will be followed with respect to property lost and persons missing APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT. METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT. 1.— D Division.— For stealing a bicycle, and several watches, etc.— GEORGE THOMPSON, age about 22, height 5 ft. 3 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, clean shaved, speaks very broad Scotch; dress, long coat, soft felt hat, dented at top, or may be wearing cycle suit. A native of Galashiels, Selkirk. Warrant issued. 2.— G Division.— For obtaining, 30th ult., goods by a worthless cheque on the Discount Banking Company of England and Wales, Limited, Lothbury, E. C. ( now closed),— HARRISON ( supposed false), age 45, height 5 ft. 7 in., stout build, com- plexion fresh, hair and moustache dark brown, eyes blue ; dress, dark brown tweed suit, black hard felt hat. He is believed to have about 20 more of these cheques in his possession. Warrant issued. 3.— L Division.— Woodcut portrait and descrip- tion of MAUD GREGORY alias MAUD ESMER- ALDA McKENZIE and ALICE ELLIS, whose apprehension is sought on a Coroner's warrant for child murder. Age 25 or 26, height 5 ft. 6 in., com- plexion and hair dark, eyes ( small) grey, flat nose, wide mouth; dress, black skirt and bodice, black jacket or fawn colour cape, black toreador hat. Is believed to have friends at Shrewsbury and Bristol, whom she may visit, or may be found in the com- pany of prostitutes. MURDER. 4.-— M Division.— For the murder of Richard Murphy, 10th April last— JAMES HERBERT, age about 24, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., 6tout build, com- plexion fair, hair and slight moustache light brown, scar back of head and upper lip, " E. E. M . hearts and anchor right arm, dagger, star and dots left arm and hand. Is believed to have assumed the name of Wannup, and to be attending fairs, etc., with a boxing booth, in the company of a man named Selby. A native of ' Walworth, London. 5.— X Division. — For embezzling £ 31 lis., 15th September last— JAMES FRASER, age about 30, height 5 ft. 7 J in., complexion florid, hair brown, moustache sandy; dress, black morning coat and vest, dark stripe trousers, black hard felt hat. Warrant issued. 6.— X Division.— For obtaining a piano by con- spiracy and fraud— JOHN BUTLER, alias PHILIP DINAN, JAMES WATKINS, GEORGE and JOHN CLARKE, age 32, height 5 ft. 8i in., com- plexion fair, hair dark brown, eyes blue, cross flags, crown and cross swords on right forearm, sailor sitting on a barrel holding a flag left forearm, bracelet left wrist, portion of ship back left hand, ring left middle finger; dress, when last seen, long fawn colour piddock coat, black morning coat and vest, dark striped trousers, white collar, plaid tie, black hard felt hat. Is well known as a racecourse thief ; native of London. Has been previously con- victed at Kilmainham, Doncaster, Wolverhampton, and London. Warrant issued. A barber. Styled1 himself " Professor Neat." Is fond of horse- racing, and may be found with racing men, or may be working at his trade. PHILIP LEIGHTON, age 29, height 5 ft. G in., complexion pale, hair brown, eyes grey, heavy moustache ( curled at ends). A baker and con fectioner. May be found living together. Warrant issued. 28.— Blackpool ( Borough).— For embezzlement- — THOMAS TAYLOR, age about 32, height 5 ft, 6 in., complexion fair, hair and moustache light,, several upper front teeth deficient, which causes him to speak as if slightly tongue- tied ; dress, black ribbed jacket and vest, brown cord trousers ( nearly new), black cloth peak cap, blucher shoes. Was formerly a pawnbroker's assistant, but has lately been em- ployed delivering coals. Is fond of horse- racing. Warrant issued. LINCOLNSHIRE. 31.— Bourne ( County).— For fraud, 2Stli ult.— A man, who gave the name of GEORGE HENRY READ, age about 45, height 5 ft. 10 in., slight buildr thin face, Roman nose, hair ( supposed slightly bald on top), beard and moustache dark ( may be turning grey), long thin hands and fingers ; dress, dark coatr trousers of rather lighter material, blue neckerchief with white spots, black hard hat. He represented himself as an agent of the Boston Dock Company, and demanded payment on foreign parcels, which he stated were at the docks. Warrant Issued. Information to Supt. Taylor, Sleaford. £ 1 REWARD. 33.— Grantham ( Borough).— For deserting h's family, leaving them chargeable to the Grantham Union— JOHN TAYLOR, age 40 to 45, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., hair sandy, moustache and whiskers ginger, birthmark right side of neck resembling 2 or 3 rows of warts. A clerk; native of Louth, Lincolnshire. Warrant issued. The above reward will be paid by the Guardians of the Grantham Union for such information as will lead to the arrest of Taylor. Information to Chief Constable Jones, Grantham. LINLITHGOWSHIRE. 34.— Linlithgow ( County). — " Woodcut portrait and description of JAMES DUFF, whose apprehen- sion is sought for stealing £ 8 2s. Gd., 9th ult., at Broxburn, age 25, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., slight build,, complexion fresh, full face, high cheek- bones, hair light brown, moustache light, eyes blue, walks erect; dress ( when last seen), dark tweed suit, black felt hat, brown shoes. A painter; may be found at collierie- s or oil works. Has resided at Cowdenbeath, Fife, and Quarter Colliery, near Hamilton, Lanarkshire, at which places he was a member of a pipe band. He endeavoured to raise a pipe band at Broxburn, and after above sum was collected, he got possession* FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 12, 1897. MONMOUTHSHIRE. 35. — Monmouth ( County).— For uttering a false deed, with intent to obtain £ 600, on 25th ult.—- JAMES TURELL, or TYRELL ( supposed false), age about 30, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., complexion ruddy, hair brown ( inclined to sandy), moustache sandy, • eyes brown; dress, dark grey slate colour suit and • overcoat, brown check cap, plain shoes, dark tie. Of good appearance. He took lodgings at Basingstoke, - where he got particulars of 4 villas, upon which he attempted to borrow the money. SUSSEX ( EAST). 38.— Eastbourne ( Borough).— For stealing, be- tween ^ lst and 30th ult., 3 blankets and 2 quilte ( recovered)— C. SILVER, alias HARMER and POTTER, age about 40, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., square build, complexion very fair, hair, whiskers and mous- tache dark brown, stoops slightly; dress, black coat, dark trousers, black peak cap, old light lace boots. Mrs. SILVER, age about 30, height about 5 ft. 5 in., very slight build, complexion fair, hair light brown ; dress, light brown threequarter jacket, mottled tweed skirt, large black straw hat, trimmed green, light house shoes. Had with them a child about 8 months old, and a pug dog. They engaged a furnished room, stole the above articles, which were afterwards found pledged. Warrant issued.
