Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enah e action to be taken upon them by another force. 3 Purlieu'an as to stolen property wil be likewise inserted inone issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. Iii nit ca< ei where a reward is offered the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions be clearly stated. 5. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is . sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property, will be prominently inserted, with detailed particulars, at a cost of lot. per portrait, an I of Is. 6d. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, including the expense ot engraving on wood. 6. Every announcement, if for the avprehension of a pci i> on, must be guaranteed by the. signature of an officer of not cess rank than Superintendent; and, if the name of such person be required to he inserted, and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chiej officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. .41 mouncements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number a nd art alphaJj'tically arranged by counties. 9. Theforcewhich cause* particulars concerning delinquents or ito'en property to be inserted in t he POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their appreh ension or recovery, at 07ue transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases, the officer signing the request for insertion of any announcement wi I be wholly re sponsible for any proceedings which may result from such puhlicaton. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwirded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only, be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, by cheque crossed " Drummond < Ss Co.," Post Office Order payable at Parliament- si., Postal Order or in Stamps. 13. APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT. SPECIAL NOTICE. THE amount of stolen property at pre- sent " circulated " by the Metropolitan Police lias become so inordinately large us to prejudice or destroy the practical value of the records, and it has been found necessary to limit it very consider- ably. It has " been decided, therefore, to discontinue the " circulation" in Infor- mations and Pawnbrokers' Lists of all property stolen in the provinces, unless • where there are grounds for believing that the property lias found its way to the Metropolis. " Chief Constables are re- quested accordingly, when forwarding lists of stolen property to Scotland Yard, to send with them a letter to that effect. And if bills or circulars are received in future, unaccompanied by such a letter, it will be assumed that the " circulation'' of the particulars they contain is not desired. The same course will be followed with respect to propeity lost and persons missing. METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT. 1.— B Division.— For stealing £ 12 lis. 0d.— EDWARD WELLSTEAD, age 13, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 in., complexion dark, long face, hair dark brown, eyes hazel; dress, black rough cloth jacket and vest, light tweed trousers, grey cap. May be found at seaside resorts. 2.— D Division.— For stealing on 23rd ult., £ 231, CHARLTON KNIGHT, age 23, height 5 ft. 2 in., complexion fair, hair light brown, slight mous- tache ( light), eyes blue; dress, blue serge jacket suit, round felt hat. A clerk; native of Clerkenwell. Warrant issued. 3.— F Division.— Woodcut portrait and descrip- tion of GEORGE CUMMINGS, alias GEORGE DAVIS and FRED STANLEY, whose apprehension is sought for stealing on 10th inst.— 2 diamond scarf pins ( 1 round, set in silver, with gold pin, the other heart shape), 3 gentlemen's gold rings ( 1 set 2 diamonds, with blue stone in cent. e " Herrn Emil Fuchs, Zur Erinnerung an das erste Portrait M B " inscribed therein, 1 set diamond, composed of 3 gold bands, the other set sapphires and 4 cross diamonds), and 4 £ 5 B; n'c of England notes, from Nos. 33676 to 33G85. Age 19, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in. ; com- plexion, hair, slight moustache ( waxed at ends), and eyes ( full and large) dark, 2 upper front teeth pro- ject ; dress, dark brown jacket suit, straw hat with black band, or light velvet corded cap ; a valet; native of Ramsgate. VV Division.— For stealing 3 trunks clothing by means of a trick, WALTER KING, age 30, height 5 ft. 10 in., complexion fair, hair light brown, eyes blue, swaggering gait; dress, black coat and vest, light trousers, brown alpine hat, brown boots. Information to be forwarded to the Metropolitan Police Office, New Scotland Yard, S. W. 5— W Division.— ALFRED DUKE, ALFRED HORLEY, and SHEFFIELD KID, Case No. 4, 13th inst., not to be arrested. Warrant withdrawn. CITY OF LONDON. 6.— For larceny ( servant) — HORACE MIN TER, late of 41, Paradise Row, Clapham, S. W., age about 15, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion fair, hair light brown, eyes ( rather large) blue, thick lips, slightly knock- kneed; dress, dark diagonal jacket and vest, dark grey trousers ( rather worn at bottoms), and cap. May have in his possession a season ticket from Farringdon Street to Ealing and a camera. Warrant issued. 7.— For fraud, WILLIAM PRICE, alias T. P. PROWSE, late of 14, Cornford Road, Balkam, age 30 to 35, height 5 ft. 9i in., slight build, complexion pale, long nose, hair and moustache dark, wearing long Newmarket coat and high silk hat. Is believed to be suffering from gout, and accompanied by his brother. Supposed travelling about Sussex with a Ralli Car and iron- grey horse. Stays at first- class hotels. S. A." cranks, No. 900, stamped near seat p. 8t nut, transfer on head, " E. Dew and Sons, Oxford Road, Reading," " Speedwell," on down- tube, " Demon" lamp. 2nd An " American Crescent;' 28 in. wheels, tangent spokes, wooden rims, " Stand- ard " tyres, front forks hah' plated, " Gasford " saddle, cork handles, gold plate on head, " The Western Wheel Works, Chicago," thereon, No. 9 stamped near saddle.— TWO MEN. 1st, Age 25, height 5 ft. 8 in., slight build, complexion very dark, thin face, hair and moustache dark; dress, brown check jacket, grey check nickers, black- and- red mixture stockings, blue shirt, green tie, cap, brown canvas shoes. 2nd. Age 30, height 5 ft. 3 in., stout build, complexion fair, round face, moustache light, hooked nose; dress, small check cycling suit, with Norfolk jacket, grey mixture stockings, white straw hat, with black band. Both spoke with foreign accent. Warrant issued. The above reward will be paid by Mr. J. II. W. Dew, 83. Oxford Road, Reading, for such information as will lead to the apprehension of the thieves and recovery of the bicycles. CHESHIRE. £ 5 REWARD. 9.— Hyde ( County).— For embezzlement— JOHN HULL, age about 40, height 5 ft. G in., stout build, complexion dark, large head, hair dark brown, pecu- liar expression in eyes, badly ruptured left side slightly lame; dress, round jacket, worsted suit, trou sers buttons stamped " Blackburn and Co." Warrant issued. The above reward will be paid by W. Blackburn and Co., Clothiers, Leeds, to any person giving such information as will lead to the apprehension of HULL Information to Captain Lingard, Supt., Hyde. 10.— Nantwich ( County).— For larceny, between 1st July, 1896, and lOtU April last— FRANK E. KING, " age about 36, height about 5 ft. 6 in., com- plexion fresh, hair and heavy moustache dark brown, walks erect and with a swinging gait; an iron- monger's assistant. Warrant issued. DERBYSHIRE. 11.— Chapel- en- le- Frith ( County).— For obtain- ing, by a worthless cheque, an iron- grey horse, 16 hands 2 in., 5 years, white face, jaw enlarged right side few sand cracks, in good condition— GEORGE BRADBURY ( supposed false), age about 50, height 5 ft. 8 in., rather stout build, complexion fresh, round features, hair ( turning grev and cut short) light brown, clean- shaved, appeared pock- marked on nose and round the mouth, speaks sharply with Lancashire accent; dress, grey Scotch tweed suit and cap. Was driving a bay horse, about 16 hands, with butcher's spring cart, newly painted dark green, picked out light green. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Gill, Chapel- en- le- Frith. 12.— Wirksworth ( County).— For stealing, 4th inst., an " American Waverley" safety bicycle, 26 in. by If in. tyres, marked " G. and J. Patent, July 17th, 1894, Lucas valves, M. F. G., by Indiana Bicycle Co., Indianopolis, U. S. A., apply this edge last, and remove it first," thereon, enamelled back, with red lines, black saddle, upturned handle, rat- trap pedals ( Ameri- can patent), 2 transfers, " Hartley, Matlock Bridge," thereon— A MAN, age about 26, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., slight build, hair and moustache dark; dress, black frock- coat, brown cloth trousers, cycling- shoes. Wore spectacles. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Hollingworth, Wirksworth. DEVONSHIRE. 13.— Exeter ( City).— For obtaining, on 7th inst., money by forged cheques on the London and County Banking Company, Limited, Preston Branch, 42, Lon- don Road, Brighton— A MAN, age about 30, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., small moustache ( supposed JarKj; wearing long brown overcoat with band, peak cap. He sends a boy with a cheque, signed " George E. Paget," and a note, purporting to come from a well- known gentleman, to tradesmen, asking them to send cash for the cheque. Information to the Chief Constable, Court House, Exeter. DORSETSHIRE. 14.— Wimborne ( County).— For stealing a brown mixture jacket and vest, at Branksome— WALTER TRIMBY, age 25, height 5 ft. 3| in., complexion fair, hair brown, slight light moustache, eyes blue ; wear- ing the stolen property, with blue trousers and cloth cap. Belongs to the Berks Militia. A njative of Reading. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Marsh, Wimborne. DURHAM. 15.— Durham ( City).— Woodcut portrait andcle- S|_ , , scription of JOHN ANTHONY SMITH, a clerk, whose apprehension is sought for embezzling, between Sth June and 8th ult., £ 107 14s. 8d., age 22, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in, complexion fresh, hair, slight moustache and eyes ( rather sunken) dark ; dress, black jacket and vest, dark tweed trousers, black hard felt hat or grey cap. Is a good comic singer, Absconded 3rd, and was seen in Liverpool on 4th inst. May endeavour to leave the country. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Smith, Durham. 16.— Durham ( City).— For larceny, from lodgings, 7th inst.— A man, who gave the name of PEARSON, age 40 to 50, height 5 ft. G or 7 in., stout build, com- plexion fresh, hair and moustache ( cut short) dark ( turning grey); dress, dark suit, white collar, dark tie, brown cap. Speaks with South country accent. He represented himself as an insurance agent, stating he had been employed as collector for the Prudential Insurance Company at Shrewsbury, and that he be- longed to Newcastle. Information to Chief Constable Smith, Durham. FORFARSHIRE. 17.— Dundee ( City).— For failing to report— Supervisee WILLIAM WATSON, OfHce No. 41651, Scotch Criminal Register, 454- 91, nge 39, height 5 ft. 3 in., complexion fair, hair fair, eyes blue, scar right temple, blue mark left of forehead, blue dot base of left thumb, 2 moles outside left forearm. Sentenced, at High Court, Dundee, 18th December, 1886, co 7 ars penal servitude, and 5 years police sunervisioi for robbery. Licenced 17th July, 1891. BM 1514. HAMPSHIRE. 19.— Southampton ( Borough).— For stealing a brown jacket, brown velvet collar and cuffs, horseshoe pattern buttons, a black and- white plaid dress, and lis.— LILY ELIZABETH LONEY, age 1G, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion pale, hair dark brown, eyes blue; dress, plaid skirt, large blue straw hat, trimmed poppies, pink or white blouse, button boots. May be wearing the stolen jacket and dress. Warrant issued. 20.— Southampton ( Borough,).— For arson — HENRY TURNER, age about 35, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., slight build, complexion pale, long thin face, hair brown, heavy moustache dark brown; dress, black morning coat and vest, dark brown trousers, skull cap, shabby appearance. A furniture salesman and clerk. Supposed native of Birmingham. May- be accompanied by his wife, age 45, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., complexion fair, hair light brown, eyes blus, lame right leg, and a daughter, age 15. HEREFORDSHIRE. 21.— Hereford ( County).— For obtaining money by false pretences, 4th inst., at Hampton Bishop — WILLIAM COTTERELL, alias LEDBURY BILL, age about 45, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, moustache dark, large red nose, stoops, slightly lame ; dress, brown plaid jacket ( too large), white slop, military trousers, brown plaid cap. A drover; native of Ledbury. Warrant issued. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Smith, Hereford. HERTFORDSHIRE. 22.— Watford ( County).— For stealing, 7th inst., i lady's gold half- hunter watch, No. 12589, maker " Klaftenberger, Regent Street," " E. M. C." in monogram on back, numerals on mother- o'- peail rim, 1 ditto open face keyles3 watch, No. 25439, makers " Vine and Thompson, 85, Aldersgate Street, Lon- don," jewelled in 8 holes, compensation balance, dome case, engine- turned, " A. J." in monogram on back ; 1 plain gold locket, diamond in centre, containing hair, gold curb pattern chain attached; 1 dark green Russian leather purse; 1 pearl spray brooch, 3 gold GLOUCESTERSHIRE. 18.-- Campden ( County).— For stealing, between 7th and 10th inst., at Stanway, a piece of green waterproof sheet, about a yard square, ring in one corner, cut from a reaping machine cover— A MAN, age about 40, height 5 ft. 10 in., slight build, com- plexion, hair and moustache dark ; wearing grey coat and vest, greasy cap, old boots, of dirty appearance. Travels the country with n roughly- made truck, which is covered with the stolen waterproof. Plays a con- certina and sings. Information to Supt. Cooke, Campden. leaves set pearls; 1 flexible gold bracelet; 1 gold brooch, with cluster of pearls forming a rosette; 1 gold chain, small loop pattern— TWO MEN. 1st, age about 30, height 5 ft. 7 in., square build, com- plexion very dark, long roman nose, heavy mous- tache dark ( wide parting in centre); of Jewish ap- pearance ; dress, dark shoddy suit, black hard felt lint. 2nd, age about 35, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., slight build, complexion fair, slight moustache brown ; dress, light brown suit, dark brown alpine Tiat. KENT. 23. — Tonbridge ( County). — For embezzling £ 25 15s. 3d.— JOHN DOY'LEY PAINE, a dispenser, age 35 to 40, height about 5 ft. 8 in., complexion, hair ( turning very grey) heavy moustache and eyes dark, rather thick lower lip, which he slightly drops ; dress, black morning coat, white check trousers, white straw hat, with black band, stand- up collar, lace boots ; of good address. May be found at race meetings. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Bartlett, Tonbridge. 24. — Maidstone ( Borough).— For stealing, 17th inst., a bay mare, about 15- 1 or 2 hands, about 3 years old, white spot on back, under saddle, short mnne, docked short, cut- wouncl near foreleg, below knee, peculiar action with forelegs when feeding, car- ries its head very low— ARTHUR MERCER, age about 25, height about 5 ft. 10 in., slight build, complexion fair, slight moustache ; dress, blue serge jacket and vest, light tweed trousers, brown tweed cap, low shoes. He booked from East Farleigh for Paddock Wood, S. E. R., by the 6.11 p. m. train, 17th inst, accompanied by a woman, whom he represents to be his wife, height about 5 ft. 2 or 3 in., com- plexion dark, round face ; had with them a rather large square deal box. LANCASHIRE. 20.— Bolton ( County).— For stealing from lodg- ings between 15th and 16th inst., at Farnworth, 1 new light- coloured cloth suit, 1 pair of hand- sewn shoes, square toes, 1 yellow, red, and black silk handkerchief, 1 light check cap, and 6s., SAMUEL " WOODS, a private in the East Lancashire Regiment, age 25, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., stout build, complexion fresh, will be wearing the stolen clothing, having left his uniform behind. Leeming, Bolton. 27.— Kirkham ( County).— For larceny, 13th ult at Fleetwood— CHARLES BERGSTEDT, age about 45, height 5 ft. 9 in., face sunburnt and pock- marked, hair and moustache light. A foreigner, but speaks very good English. Has been employed as second- rate engineer on steam trawlers. May seek similar employment. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Ormerod, Kirkham. 28.— Blackpool ( Borough).— For embezzlement — HARRY PERCY TAYLOR, age 17, height about 5 ft. 2 in., slight build, complexion sallow, liiir bl. ick, eyes grey, hairy mole left cheek, slightly bow- legged, stoops and walks with quick shuffling gait ; dre.- , black vicuna suit, bound with braid, brown pl. ii ( e: >, pink front, black tie, with red flowers. A labourer; native of Kirk- ham. Sentenced, at Salford Assizes, lGtli Decem- ber, 1892, to 3 years penal servitude, for stealing a ponj- and harness, and at Salford Sessions, 21st November, 1895, to 18 months hard labour, and licence revoked, for larceny. Liberated on 2nd licence, 29th July, 1897, which expires 16th October, 1897. S 516. Information to the Chief Constable, Town Hail, Salford, Lancashire. 30.— Warrington ( Borough).— For larceny, 4tli inst.— SAMUEL WARBURTON, age 31, height 6 ft. 1 in., complexion fresh, hair and moustache ( inclined to be sandy) light brown, eyes grey, small scar top of centre of forehead, carries one arm lower than the other. A labourer, formerly a guuner in the Roval Artillery, and is now in the Army Re- serve. GEORGE OGDEN, age 40 to 45, height about 5 ft. 7 in., complexion pale, prominent cheek- bones, large nose, high forehead, hair ( thin on top) dark, very slight moustache, walks erect; dress ( usually) dark jacket and vest, dark cord trouseia, black cap, clogs. A slater's or bricklayer's labourer. May be found in the company of poachers. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Talbot, Warrington.
