Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought loill be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enaf c action to be taken upon them by another force. 3 Par'icn irs as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In nil cxses where a reward is offered the name and address of some person responsible for the pigment must be given, and the exact conditions be clearly stated. 5. Portrait s of persons whose ajrprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property, will be prominently inserted, with detailed particulars, at a cost of 15s. per portrait, and of Is. 6d. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, including the expense of engraving on wood. < 5. E'ie. ru announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and, if the name of such person be required to be inserted, and no wxrrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. A nnouncemenls of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, ar. d are alphabetically arranged by counties. 0. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or sto'en property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their appreh ension or recovery, at once transmit to the. Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases, the officer signing the request for insertion of any announcement, will be wholly re sponsible for any proceedings which may result from such publicaton. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only, be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, by cheque, crossed " Drummond tfc Co.," Post Office Order payableat Parliament- st., Postal Order, or in Stamps. 13. Advertisements are accepted for the POLICE GAZETTE through Mr. James Willing, 125, Strand, London, the sole Agent, who wilt furnish the rates on application. 14. SPECIAL NOTICE. THE amount of stolen property at pre- sent " circulated " by the Metropolitan Police has become so inordinately large as to prejudice or destroy the practical value of the records, and it has been found necessary to limit it very consider- ably. It has been decided, therefore, to discontinue the " circulation" in Infor- mations and Pawnbrokers' Lists of all property stolen in the provinces, unless where there are grounds for believing1 that the property has found its way to the Metropolis. Chief Constables are re- quested accordingly, when forwarding lists of stolen property to Scotland Yard, to send with them a letter to that effect. And if bills or circulars are received in future, unaccompanied by such a letter, it will be assumed that the " circulation" of the particulars they contain is not desired. The same course will bo followed with respect to propeity lost and persons missing. APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT. METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT. 1.— E Division.— For obtaining money by false pretences— HARRY SHEPPARD alias POGSON, age 38, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion fair, hair and moustache brown; dress dark tweed morning suit, black hard felt hat. Warrant issued. 2.— E Division.— For obtaining a bicycle by a worthless cheque on the Bank of Great Britain— W. J. MURRAY, age 35, height 5 ft. 2 in., com- plexion fair, hair and slight moustache light; dress, brown tweed jacket suit, hard felt hat. Has in his possession a number of cheques, which he may attempt to pass in the country. Warrant issued. 3.— K Division.— For malicious wounding— FREEMAN ELLINGHAM, age 19, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion fresh, hair light brown, eyes brown, clasped hands, C W on right forearm, 5 dots, C W back of left forearm, sailor on back of left hand, dot on 2nd finger, C W on 3rd finger left hand, scar on muscle of left arm ; dress, blue serge jacket and vest, light tweed trousers, dark cap. Native of Canning Town, Essex. Warrant issued. Information to be forwarded to the Metropolitan Police Office, New Scotland Yard, S. W. CITY OF LONDON. 4.— For fraud, WILLIAM PRICE, alias T. P. PROWSE, late of 14, Cornford Road, Balham, age 30 to 35, height 5 ft. in., slight build, complexion pale, long nose, hair and moustache dark, wearing long Newmarket coat and high silk hat. Is believed to be suffering from gout, and accompanied by his brother. Supposed travelling about Sussex with a Ralii Car and iron- grey horse. Stays at first- class hotels. May be found at race meetings. Warrant issued. 5.— For fraud, WILLIAM HAYES, late of 54, Ferntower Road, Highbury, age about 32, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion fresh, long nose, hair and heavy moustache, dark brown ; dress, dark grey morn- ing coat suit, flap pockets, high silk hat. Usually carries a walking stick. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. McWilliam, 26, Old Jewry, E. C. BERKSHIRE. 0.— Clewer ( County).— Forkrceny ( lodger), 16th ult., and stealing 1 pair black- and- white check trou- sers ; 1 pair braces; 1 silver curb pattern watch- chain ; 1 silver buckle ring— JOHN BENTICK, age about 43, height 5 ft. 10 in., complexion sallow, hair dark brown, moustache brown, slight side whiskers; dress, dark coat, light trousers, straw hnt with black band, sidespring boots. A native of Windsor. Carries a carpet bag, tied with string. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Read, Clewer. CHESHIRE. 7.— Nantwich ( County).— For larcenv, between 1st July, 1896, and 10th April last— FRANK E. KING, age about 36, height about 5 ft. 6 in., com- plexion fresh, hair and heavy moustache dark brown, walks erect and with a swinging gait; an iron- monger's assistant. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Meredith, Nantwich. CORNWALL 8.— Truro ( City).— For embezzlement— R. M. TREZISE, age about 28, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., com- plexion fair, slight moustache brown, eyes dark; dress ( usually) dark blue suit, hard hat. Is fond of company and drink. A clerk or accountant; native of Helston, Cornwall. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. Information to Chief Constable Coleman, Truro. DERBYSHIRE. 9.— Wirksworth ( County).— For obtaining £ 10 by false pretences, on 3rd ult.— WALTER JONES ( supposed false), age about 35, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion fresh, hair and moustache brown, one middle finger deficient; dress, dark brown tweed suit, black peak cap, lace boots. The money was ob- tained on the pretence of selling a horse. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Hollingsworth, Wirksworth. DEVONSHIRE. 10.— Exeter ( County).— For obtaining money and food by false pretences— MRS. S. 0. STONHAM, alias COLES, STEVENS, ROBINSON, etc., age about 35, height 5 ft. 5 in., slight build, complexion sallow, hair dark brown, eyes blue; wearing black- and- white sailor hat, trimmed with black tulle, red- and- blue poppies and white osprey, carried a large cream- coloured sunshade. May be found at hotels or lodging houses. Accompanied by a boy, age about 7. Supposed a native of London. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable of Devon, Exeter. GLAMORGANSHIRE. 11— Cardiff Borough).— For rape- THOMAS D. JOHN, age 45, height about 5 ft. 8 in., complexion dark, round face, prominent cheek- bones, hair ( turn- ing grey) black, moustache ( clipped) and small side whiskers dark : dress ( usually) large check suit, light paddock coat, bowler hat. GLOUCESTERSHIRE. 12— Campden ( County).— For obtaining foot! and lodgings by false pretences, 2Gth ult.— A MAN, age 25 to 30, height about 5 ft. 4 in., stout build, com- plexion fresh, hair dark brown, clean shaved, eyes dark, prominent nose, walks erect; dress, slate colour jacket and vest, light tweed trousers, light cloth cap, broad sole watertight boots. Stated he was in the employ of the Great Western Rail way Company, and re- quired lodgings for himself and three others who were to erect a bridge across the line. Is wanted elsewhere for similar offences, and for larceny of the boots he is wearing. ( See Case No. 25.) Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Cooke, Campden. 13.- Fishponds ( County).— For stealing 22 books ( recovered); 1 pair opera glasses; and I pair boots — FRANCIS LYNCH, age £ 0, height 5 ft. 11 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, ( yes grey; wearing dark suit and hard felt hat. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Matthews, Fishponds. HAMPSHIRE. 14.— Petersfield ( County).— For stealing, 16th ult., a dark leather purse, brass clasp, containing £ 10; 1 silver match- box, chased, " G. F. C." thereon, ring attached; 1 lady's old silver geneva watch; 1 round morocco ring- case, " Sly, Salisbury" therein, containing lady's gold ring, set rubies and pearls; 1 imitation gold brooch, 1 \ in. long, set purple stones— WILLIAM KEEGAN, alias BARNETT ( supposed false), age about 23, height about 5 ft. 3 in., short legs, long body, rather dark complexion, hair dark brown, both wrists tattooed, slightly bow- legged, but walks erect; dress, grey cycling suit lined grey flan- nel, grey stockings, brown shoes, grey cap, dark check tie. Stated he was a native of Bristol. After committing the larceny, he hired, but did not return, a safety " Swift Popular " bicycle, makers " Coventry Machinist Co.," tangent wheels, " Dunlop- Welch " pneumatic tyres, back tyre slightly cut, felt handles with tips deficient, 30 in. front, 28 in. back wheel, block chain, rat- trap pedals, " A. Rowsell, cycle agent, Petersfield," on frame, brake and bell. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. King, Petersfield. HEREFORDSHIRE. 15.— Ledbury ( County).— For larceny, 22nd June.— LEONARD GOULD, alias DICK SMITH, age 41, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fair, hair light brown, slight moustache light, eyes grey, freckled, mole back of neck, cut scars right side of head, and on left leg ; dress, dark jacket and vest, cord trousers, black hard hat, strong lace boots. A labourer ; na- tive of Worcester. Has friends residing at Newport, Cardiff and Rhayader. May be found in company of poachers, harvesters, or timber fellers. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Phillips, Ledbury. LANCASHIRE. 16.— Chorley ( County).— For failing to report— Supervisee ELIZABETH WILSON, alias JANE WALKER and JANE JACKSON, Office No. 2520- 96, and Miscellaneous No. 2250- 97, age 47, height 5 ft. 1 in., complexion fresh, hair grey, eyes blue, scar on each eyebrow and on right shin, varicose veins right leg. A laundress. Sentenced, at Preston Sessions, 30th November, 1892, to 3 years penal servitude and 3 years police supervision, for larceny. Licenced 7th August, 1896. F S 75. Information to Supt. LEICESTERSHIRE. 17.— Leicester ( Borough).— For failing to report — Licence Holder JOHN LEWIN TAYLOR, alias JOHN LEWIN and DIDDLEUM, Office No. 48941, age 53, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion pale, hair light brown ( turning grey), eyes grey, scar over left eye and on each side of head, small mole on right jaw, brown mole on spine of back and fleshy mole back of upper arm. Will be found in company of poachers. Sentenced, at Leicester County Assizes, 3rd March, 1874, to penal servitude for life, for manslaughter. Liberated, on 2nd licence, 31st October, 1895. A 1034. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Detective De- partment, Leicester. LINCOLNSHIRE. 18.— Brigg ( County).— Fur embezzling, 12th April last, £ 4 10s.— WALTER JACKSON, age about 30, height 5 ft. 1 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, mous- tache light; dress, corduroy- slceved vest and trousers, cap. A chimney sweep ; native of Leeds. He left Bolton, Lancashire, on 17th June, when he was lame in one leg, and walked with a stick. May be found with the Salvation Army. Warrant issued. Information to Inspector Eggleston, Brigg. 19.— Horncastle ( County).— For obtaining money by false pretences— JOHN WRIGHT, age 48 to 50, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., complexion dark, hair brown, bald on top, moustache light brown, nearly blind in left eye, various marks tattooed on both arms, including rose on right; dress, old light cloth jacket and vest, light cord trousers, blue check shirt, blue silk neckerchief, light cloth cap, old lace boots A tramping bricklayer. Has served in the Army. Stated he was going to Scarborough. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Costar, Horncastle. NORFOLK. 20.— Great Yarmouth ( Borough).— For stealing a pneumaticsafety bicycle, makers " J. Parr ik Co., Lei cester," on front of frame, back mud- guard, leather gear- case, " Dunlop" rims, " J. Parr's ' tyres, 24- in. frames, " Brooks'si" saddle, brash brake, flat top handle- bar, cork handles, " No. 1854 " on back wheel and crank bracket STIMPSON, alias MOR- GAN, age 17, height 5 ft. 2 or 3 in., complexion dark ; dress, dark suit, light cap. Native of London. Information to Chief Constable Parker, Great Yarmouth. Warrant issued. NORTHAMPTONSHIRE. 21.— Northampton ( ZWOM^ A).— Fordesertirsghis wife and family, leaving them chargeable to the Northampton Union— JAMES EDWARD POPE, age 40, neight 5 ft. 6 in., rather slight build, thin features, hair and side whiskers dark, may have rather sandy moustache. A groom. May be found at hotel yards or livery stables. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Mardlin, North- ampton. 22.— Peterborough ( Liberty oj).— For bigamy, 7th October, 1894, at Werrington— AUGUSTUS LEMON, alias HE. NRY BEAUMONT and CONCER- TINA CHARLIE, age 33, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 in., slight build, complexion, hair and moustache dark, sharp features, slightly bow- legged; when last seen was wearing dark suit and small cap. He plays a concer- tina at public- houses. May be found at seaside places. Is well known in Norfolk and the Isle of Ely. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Blackman, Peterborough. NORTHUMBERLAND. 23.— Hexham ( County).— For breaking into a church, 17th ult., at St. Oswald's, near Hexham— A MAN, age about 23, height 5 ft. G or 7 in., com plexion fresh ( sunburnt), hair and slight moustache light brown ; dress, dark blue jacket, suit and cap, white tie. Has been travelling with the man de- scribed in Case No. 66, 23rd ult. Information to Captain Terry, Chief Constable, Morpeth, or Supt. Robertson, Hexham. NOTTINGHAMSHIRE. 2 1.— Nottingham { County).— For obtaining food and lodgings by false pretences— MORGAN HENRY JONES, alias PRICE HENRY RAGLAN, age 24, height 5 ft. 3 in., complexion dark, hair ( bald at back) dark brown, slight moustache and eyes dark, 2 scars on forehead, which he covers with his hair; speaks with Welsh accent; dress, black worsted cloth jacket and vest, jersey, grey striped trousers, black cloth cap, light lace boots; wore a silver ring on one little finger, and an imitation gold ring on the other. • Stated he was employed in the neighbourhood, erect- ing telegraph poles, etc. Warrant issued. OXFORDSHIRE. 25.— Chipping Norton ( Comity).— For obtaining from 24th to 26th ult., food and lodgings by false pretences, and stealing 1 pair light lace watertight boots, very broad soles, size 8, with brown laces attached— EDWARD MORGAN, age 25 to 30, height 5 ft. 4 in., stout build, complexion fresh, hair daik brown, clean shaved, eyes dark, prominent nose, walss erect; dress, slate coloured jacket and vest, dark '. weed trousers, light cloth cap. Supposed wearing stolen boots. Stated he was a. native of Crewe. He took lodgings, stating he was in advance of others, to pro- cure lodgings, and that they were going to erect a new bridge over the Great Western Railway. Sup- posed wanted elsewhere for similar offences. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Sutton, Chipping Norton. SHROPSHIRE. 26.— Bridgnorth ( County) - For embezzlement— JOHN TENCH, age 22, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., com- plexion fresh, hair light brown, very light slight mous- tache, eves blue, of smart appearance, swings his arms when walking; dress, dark coat, blue vest with red spots and white buttons, brown plaid trousers with black stripes, white tie, brown hard hat, brown boots. A grocer's assistant; native of Broseley, Salop. Has recently been employed as traveller for a pipe manu- facturer. May be found in the neighbourhood of Birmingham, where he was seen on 6th ult. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Walters, Bridgnorth. 27.— Shrewsbury ( County).— For causing grievous bodilv harm, 13th ult., at Ruyton Eleven Towns— JOHN SNEAD, alias FLASH, age 27, height 5 ft. 9 in., square shoulders, complexion fresh, high cheek- bones, full round face, flat nose, hair ( cut short) brown, moustache light brown, fingers of left hand deficient at second joint; dress, dark plaid jacket and vest, dark cord trousers, dark plaid cap, cycling boots, or may be wearing a dark suit. An ironworker ; native of Oakengates, Shropshire. Is also a professional boxer, and travels the country with boxing booths, etc. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Edwards, Shrewsbury. SOMERSETSHIRE. 28.— Weston- super- Mare ( County).— For ob- taining £ 4 by false pretences, 24th April last— MRS. G. ARUNDEL, alias LAMPARD, age about 30, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion fair, hair dark brown; dress, black dress, dark loose cape or green jacket, dark straw hat trimmed black ribbon or feathers or dark green felt hat with veil. May be found at seaside resorts, where she performs, with others, on the sands. Information to Supt. Balkwill, Weston- super- Mare. SUFFOLK. £ 2 REWARD. 29.— Lowestoft ( County). — For deserting his wife and family, leaving them chargeable to the Mut- ford and Lothingland Union— GEORGE BEDFORD, alias FATTY and FRED SEYMOUR, age 23, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion florid, hair ( turning grey) brown, moustache sandy, eyes grey. A carpenter; native of Oulton. May be found at docks, near Liver- pool. Warrant issued. The above reward will be paid by the Guardians of the Mutford and Lothingland Union for such infor- mation as will lead to the arrest of Bedford. Information to Supt. Shipp, Lowestoft. 30. — Ipswich ( Borough).— For stealing, 4th inst., a pneumatic road racer bicycle, " The Boreas," " War- wick. " tyres, drop handle- bar, cork handles, with white tips, tangent spokes, gold lined, American rat- trap pedals, makers, " R. J. Watkinson and Company, Bond Street, Birmingham— ALFRED CHARLES SCO- GING, age 23, height 5 ft. 5 in., weight 8 or 9 stone, complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes grey, 2 scars back of head, cut scar right eyebrow, left cheek and back of left thumb, mole on right side and upper right arm. 2nd right toe has been broken ; dress, black jacket and vest, light cloth trousers and cap, lace boots. A native of Ipswich. Warrant issued. Information to Lieut.- Colonel Russell, Chief Con- stable, Ipswich. SUSSEX ( EAST). 31.— East Grinstead ( Comity).— Forstealing24th ult., 1 lady's silver geneva watch, and £ 2 — A GIRL, age 16 or 17, height about 5 ft., com- plexion dark, hair very dark, eyes dark, hands very brown, as though she had been working in fields ; dress, short black cape, black dress, black straw hat, with dark velvet band, bow at side, strong button boots. Information to Supt. Relf, East Grinstead. 32.— Eastbourne ( Borough).— For obtaining, 1st ult., by false pretences, about 7 yards of black diagonal serge— A WOMAN, age 23 or' 24, height 5 ft, 1 or 2 in., complexion pale, full face, hair brown; dress, blick serge double- breasted three- quarter jacket, black dress, black sailor hat with black band. ( Supposed identical with MISS WILSON, described in Case No. 62. 26th March last.) Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Plumb, Eastbourne. 33.— Hastings ( Borough).— For stealing ( bailee), 6th ult., a light brown leather portmanteau, contain- ing a youth's black coat and vest; 1 pair of light grey cloth trousers; 2 pairs white flannel ditto; 2 new white cotton shirts ; 2 blue cotton ditto ; 2 pairs white cuffs ; 7 white collars, marked " L. Taylor " ; 7 white handkerchiefs; 3 white cotton vests; 1 striped flannelette nicrht shirt; 1 new pair of kid lace boots; and a brown cloth cap— CLAUDE THOMPSON, age about 20, height about 5 ft. 9 in., complexion very dark, hair ( curly) black; dress, black serge jacket, blue cloth vest with white spots, black trousers with narrow white stripes, grey peak cap, white cricketing shoes. A native of Bombay. Warrant issued. 34.— Hastings ( Borough).— For stealing, 13th ult., a gold curb chain brooch, about in. long, large links, and a gold telescopic bracelet— A MAN, age 28 to 30, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., complexion and TUESDAY, AUGUST 3, 1897.
