ICE GAZETTE, and all communications upon them, should be addressed to THE EDITOR OF THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YARD, LONDON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 3. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions be clearly stated. 5. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property, will be prominently inserted, with detailed particulars, at a cost of 15S. per portrait, and of Is. 6d. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, including the expense of engraving on wood. 6. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and, if the name of such person be required to be inserted, and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property muit be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. A nnouncements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and are alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the anr. » uncementfor insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases, the officer signing the request for insertion of any announcement, will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They » must be clearly written on one side of the paper only, be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office. New Scotland Yard, by cheque, crossed " Drummond dk Co.," Post Office Order payable at Parliament- it., Postal Order, or in Stamps. 13. Advertisements are accepted for the POLICE GAZETTE through Mr. James Willing, 125, Strand, London, the sole Agent, who wilt furnish the rales on application. 14. NOTICE. 1.— The composition of the Friday No. of the " Police Gazette" will be found arranged for easy reference as follows :— ( a) Regulations at top of 1st page. ( b) Apprehensions Sought. ( 1). Cities and Boroughs therein, arranged in strict alphabetical order. 2.— Any additional copies of the GAZETTE beyond the number at present supplied will be forwarded on application in the form set forth in circular of the 7th of November, 1883. 3.— It is particularly requested that any com- plaints as to the non- delivery or of irregularity in the date of delivery of the POLICE GAZETTE, may be at once notified to the Editor. The following is a copy of the order which governs the circulation, by the Metropolitan Police, of advertisements, or reward bills, for the discovery of property or the detec- tion of crime. The Editor inserts it, in hope of preventing • delays which sometimes occur in publishing such notices, on account of their not being in accordance with the regu- lations in force in the Metropolis :— 1. Printed liand- bills, or other advertisements, offering a reward for the discovery of property or the detection of crime, whether printed and issued by the Metropolitian Police, or distributed and exhibited, with the sanction of the Commissioners, on the application of private persons, or of the Police of any County or Borough, must be clearly expressed in relation to the following points— ( a) The amount of the reward. < b) The conditions on which it is payable, ( c.) The name and address of the person by whom it will be paid. ( d) That the name and address of the printer appear thereon. ( 32 and 33 Vic., cap. 24, sec. 2.) 2. No expression must be used in such an advertise- ment. in relation to property stolen, or criminally taken or disposed of, holding out any expectation that the reward will be paid oil its return without the offender being brought to trial, or without enquiry. Attention is specially directed to clause ( d), par. 1, as Police Notices » re constantly being received by the Metropolitan Police without the printer's name and address, and they are consequently not distributed. NOTE.— There are 180 Stations of the Metropolitan Police Force at which Notices can be posted. APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT. METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT. 1.— L Division.— For stealing, 17th ult., a mouse- coloured horse- pony, 11 hands, clipped except legs, white blaze on nose, slightly defective near foreleg; a set of brass- mounted harness ( worn), brown collar and traces, and a box- cart painted chocolate, picked out red and blue, red wheels, off- shaft, splash and tail- boards broken, " David Brown, 15, South Street, Wal- worth," on a piece of tin on side— JOHN CLARK, alias DOSSY, age 27, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion fresh, hair light, eyes grey, left thumb deficient; dress, dark Irish frieze overcoat, dark jacket suit, brown cloth peak cap, lace boots. Appearance of a costermonger. Native of Walworth, Warrant issued. Information to be forwarded to the Metropolitan Police Office, New Scotland Yard, S. W. BEDFORDSHIRE. 2.— Biggleswade ( County).— For obtaining, 1st ult., at Potton Fair, by a forged cheque on J. and C. Simonds and Co., of Reading, a brown mare, valua £ 31— JOHN HAWKES, alias JAMES LOCK, JOHN THORPE, WILLIAM JAMES and HENRY HUD- SON, age 45, height 5 ft. 3 in., complexion fresh, hair and moustache dark ( turning grey), eyes hazel, slightly pock- marked on nose; dress, dark blue over- coat ( velvet collar), dark cardigan jacket, black cloth vest, brown trousers, black hard felt hat. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Cain, Biggleswade. BERKSHIRE. 3.— Newbury ( County).— On a warrant for steal- ing a brass cornet ( recovered) ( See GAZETTE, 26th ult., Case No. 8)— Licence Holder ROBERT KNIGHT, alias WELLS and GEORGE WEBB, Office No. 494- 97, age 57, height 5 ft. 8 in. ( without shoes), complexion fresh, hair and eyes grey, bald top of head, mole right cheek close to ear and back of right knee, scar front of chest, right eyebrow, front of 2nd right finger, 2 scars right thumb, 2 back of 1st left finger, large scar from operation inside left thigh, right thumb stiff, nail of 1st right finger deformed, red mole under right shoulder- blade. Has a sister, Mrs. Peters, residing at No. 10, Creeland Grove, Catford, where he may visit. Sentenced, at Ports- mouth Sessions, 4th July, 1890, to 5 years penal servitude, for stealing clothing; re- convicted, at North London Sessions, on 22nd April, 1895, and sen- tenced to 12 months imprisonment, and licence re- voked, for larceny. Winterson, CrickhowelL CHESHIRE. 5.— Middlewich ( County).— For stealing an old- fashioned silver lever stop- watch-^ TOHN WRIGHT, age 28, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion fresh, hair dark, heavy moustache black, eyes grey, walks very erect; dress, black frock coat and vest, blue and black striped trousers, lace boots, hard felt hat. Carries a dark plaid mackintosh. A pensioner from. 9th Lancers. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Large, Middlewich. DEVONSHIRE. 6.— Barnstaple ( Borough).— For failing to re- port- Supervisee ROBERT GREEN, Office No. 48676, age 30, height 5 ft. in., complexion fresh, hair light brown, eyes blue, cut scar over right eye- brow, under left eye, under chin, ball of left thumb and 2nd joint right middle finger, " G." back of right arm, 2 dots back of left arm. Native of Dartford, Kent. Sentenced, at Barnstaple Quarter Sessions, 10th April, 1895, to 5 months imprisonment and 2 years police supervision, for attempted larceny. 1360. Information to the Chief Constable, Barnstaple. DURHAM. 7.— Sunderland ( Borough).— For failing to re- port— Licence Holder HENRY SMITH, Office No. 3098- 96, age 27, height 5 ft. 7J in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes grey, red birthmark back of head, scar left cheek, right of belly, 3 scars small of back, 4 right buttock, 1 left forearm, back of left thumb, back of right upper arm, right elbow, front of right hand, outside right thigh, front of right leg and front of left knee, right big toe- nail deformed, 2nd lef; toe overlaps the 3rd, " H." on right breast, ruptured right groin. Attends fairs, and associates with low horse dealers. Has been previously convicted. Warrant issued. 10.— Gloucester ( County).— For assault on a police constable, at Elmore, 30th January.—- ALICK SPIERS, age 25, height 5 ft. 6 in., slight build, complexion fair, hair light brown, very slight whiskers and moustache, eyes blue, slight impediment in speech; dress, dirty cloth jacket and vest, cord or moleskin trousers, old dark cap, generally wears u muffler. HAMPSHIRE. 11.— Aldershot ( County).— For falsification of accounts— CHARLES LAWTON, age about 32, height about 5 ft. 4 in., slight build, complexion dark, thin features, hair[( slightlyturninggrey) andmoustache dark brown, slight side whiskers, of smart appear- ance, walks erect; dressed, generally, in a blue serge or brown tweed suit, blue melton overcoat, brown cap and boots. Wholesale grocer's cashier; absconded 21st ult. May be accompanied by his wife, age about 28, height 5 ft. 4 in., slight build, complexion sallow, hair light brown; dressed, generally, in a blue cape, dark dress, small black hat with feather on one side. HEREFORDSHIRE. 14.— Bromyard ( County).— For misapplying cer- tain moneys, on 1st October last— AUGUS PUS JOHN MULLINGER, age 37, height 5 ft. 10 in., stout build, complexion fresh, hair and moustache dark brown, has a swaggering gait; dress ( when last seen), dark jacket and vest, grey striped trousers, black hard hat. Was formerly a porter at the Aston Union, near Birmingham. Warrant issued. Not to be apprehended out of the United Kingdom. Information to Supt. Lewis, Bromyard. KENT. 15.— Canterbury ( County).— For false pretences, 6th ult., at Whitstable— WILLIAM BENNETT, age 31, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion freckled, moustache ginger, " I love Emily White" tattooed on arm ; dress, long dark overcoat, cord trousers, light skull cap. An Army Reservist; native of Boughton, near Faversham, Kent. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Wood, Canterbury. 16.— Chatham ( County).— For stealing, at Old Brompton, 1 yellow- and- black carriage- rug, blue binding; 1 lady's black cloak, f- length; 1 dark brown boa; 1 scarlet- and- blue table- cloth, with fringe; 1 white table- cloth; 2 ladies' night- dresses: 2 chemises; 2 pairs of drawers; 2 gentlemen'^ white cotton shirts; 1 white linen sheet; 2 dark rosewood workboxes; 1 light- coloured inkstand, with drawers, and 2 ink- bottles; 6 nickel- silver tablespoon • ; 6 nickel- silver dessert- spoons; 1 light green cloth dress and jacket, with pink silk vest ( quite new); 1 drab dress, with velvet round bottom; 1 melton cloth bodice; 4 yards of alpaca— TWO MEN. 1st, age 30, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion fresh, hair ( cut short) brown, eyes blue, birthmark left breast, " Love Kitty P " on left arm, " Love M " right wrist; dress, light dust coat, dark vest, military trousers, with stripe taken out, black silk neckerchief, dark cap, light boots ( all old); a flower seller. 2nd, age 29, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion pale, hair auburn, mous- tache light ginger, eyes grey ; dress, dark jacket, cardigan jacket or guernsey, cord trousers, dark cap, heavy lace boots, military appearance ; a hawker. Lacy, Chatham. 17.— West Mailing ( County).— For stealing, be- tween 20th and 21st ult., at Wrotham, a 2- wheel barrow ( nearly new), body painted dark green, red wheels, 20 in. apart, 1- inch tyres, tips of handles painted red; 1 small flower- fork; 1 pair hedge clip- pers ; 1 garden trowel— A MAN, age about 30, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion fair, slight light mous- tache; dress, dark jacket and trousers, black, hard hat. A WOMAN, age about 30, height 5 it. 1 or 5 in., hair dork; dress, long brown jacket or ulster, black dress, black straw hat. Had with them a child about 4 months old. They were seen at Foots Cray, on 21st ult., going in the direction of London. Information to Supt. Hoare, West Mailing. 18.— Canterbury ( City).— For stealing from his lodgings, 1 gentleman's gold chain ( recovered), and 1 pair of silver sleeve- links, coin pattern— A MAN, age 23 to 25, height about 5 ft. 11 in., complexion fair, hair light, very slight moustache; dress, grey over- coat ( velvet collar), dark jacket and vest, brown spats, black Alpine hat. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Farmery, Canter- bury. 19.— Folkestone ( Borough).— For stealing from lodgings, between 16th and 22nd ult., 6 silver teaspoons; 3 old- fashioned silver tablespoons; 2 sil- ver dessert spoons ( all plain pattern) ; i gold bracelet; 1 square gold brooch, set green stones ; 1 gold minia- ture brooch, with dark hair ; 1 long gold chain, small link pattern; 1 coral brooch, with gold rim— A man who gave the name of CHAMP BIRCH, alias BUR- TON, age about 30, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., slight build, complexion sallow, hair and slight moustache dark; dress, light brown jacket ( with dark brown velvet collar), dark trousers, black hard felt hat, lace boots. Left for Charing Cross on 22nd inst. Ac- companied by his wife, age 26, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion fair, hair dark, eyes blue; dress, greenish cape ( with 2 rows of brown fur on collar), black dress, black hat trimmed black velvet and feathers; and a child about 2 years old. Had with them a fancy brown wicker mail cart, with brown hood; a child's bath; a black box, with white letters " B. K. B.''; a long portmanteau, with letters " B. K. B."; and a small black hand- bag. LANCASHIRE. 20.— Bolton ( County).— For stealing, between 17th and 18th ult., a dark Irish frieze over- coat, velvet collar, usual pockets, breast pocket on left side, coat has been turned, grey flannel mix- ture lining, no sleeve linings— A MAN, age about 27, complexion pale, thin features; dress, dark jacket, grey mixture trousers, dark cap and clogs. He took lodgings, stating he was a labourer at the Wigan Coal and Iron Company, Aspull. Information to Supt. Leeming, Bolton. 21.— Burnley ( County).— Woodcut portrait and description of FREDERICK NOWELL, whose apprehension is sought for attempted double murder, age 34, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., complexion fresh, hair sandy ( bald on front of head), clean shaven ( supposed wearing a false beard and moustache, imitation black hair mixed with grey, and reaches 3 or 4 in. below the chin), eyes blue, F. N. tattooed inside left forearm ; dress, black serge reefer jacket and vest, dark brown check trousers, black and green tie, low shoes. The photograph was taken a few years ago. Information to Supt. Barnett, County Police Office, Burnley. MONMOUTHSHIRE. 22.— Abergavenny ( County).— For forging and uttering a request for the payment of money— FREDERICK HODGKISS, alias HOOPER and ROBERTS, age 38, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fresh, hair light brown ( turning grey), eyes grey, dent on top of head from an injury, cross flogs and crown tattooed right arm, crucifix left arm ; dress, dark jacket and vest, cord trousers, double peak cap, with flaps tied on top. A farm labourer; native of Tenbury. Well- known in Herefordshire, Worcester- shire and Shropshire. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Daviea Abergavenny. NORFOLK. £ 1 REWARD. 23.— Loddon ( County).— For deserting his wife and family, leaving them chargeable to the Loddon and Clavering Union— CHARLES MARMADUKR MARSDEN, age 36, height 5 ft. 10 in., complexion prtle, hair and eyes dark, scar on forehead. A har- ness maker; native of Bramfield, near Ilalesworth, Suffolk. Warrant issued. The above' reward will be paid by the Guardians of the Loddon and Clavering Union for the arrest of MARSDEN. Information to Supt. Eagling, Loddon. SOMERSETSHIRE. 2 4. — Te m p I e CIO U d ( County).— For steal ing, 28th. Jan., at Keynsham, 1 lady's silver open- face geneva watch, No. 22020, a short silver chain attached, with pendant, marked " H."; 1 portmanteau, containing 1 blue sorge coat and trousers, 1 white wooUen sweater, 1 white Oxford shirt marked " H.," 1 pair of gentleman's brown shoes, 2 white handkerchiefs, 1 collar, 1 pair socks, 1 white tie, and 1 hair- brush and comb ( portmanteau recovered at Cardiff, 7th inst.^ — ALAN FALCONER, alias HENRY CHAM- BERLAYNE, age 35 or 36, height 5 ft. 10 or 11 in., complexion fair, thin features, hair%( bushy over ears) brown, heavy moustache light, blue eyes ; dress, blue suit, cloth cap, lace boots. Is a good pianist and comic singer, and is often engaged at low hotels, etc. Has been a gamekeeper at Cae Bricks, Llangadock, Carmarthenshire. Represents himself as a Squadron Sergeant Major, 5tii lloyal Irish Lancers. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Dicks, Temple Cloud. 25.— Bath ( City).— For obtaining, 27th ult., £ 3 12s., by false pretences— G. DYER, age about 50, height about 5 ft. 10 in., stout build, hair ( turning grey) dark, moustache dark brown, walks as if suffer- ing from tender feet; dress, dark serge jacket and vest, dark striped trousers, black bowler hat. He called upon a licenced victualler, whom he promised to appoint sole agent in Bath for the sale of Stra- monium cigarettes, and that he would send an auto- matic machine, for which 12s. per month would be paid for its being allowed to be placed in the bar, and also a commission on all goods sold. STAFFORDSHIRE. 26.— Bilston ( County).— For stealing a horse, trap and harness ( recovered)— FREDERICK JONES, age 20, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., slight build, com- plexion fresh, hair light, clean shaved; dress, black coat and vest, blue striped trousers, black tie, black felt hat, lace boots. Native of Walsall. ETHEL* ROSE, alias VALLANCE and JONES, age 25, height 4 ft. 10| in., rather stout build, complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes grey, slight scar on bridge of nose; dress, black rough three- quarter jacket ( double- breasted), black corded dress, black sailor hat ( red crown, bird at side), thick black veil, low shoes ( pa- tent fronts). Native of Wolverhampton. ( See Case- No. 29.) Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Walters, Bilston. 27.— Burslem ( County).— For stealing, 19th ult., a purse containing £ 7 Is. l^ d., and a birth and barial certificate, " Henry Barnett" thereon; 1 pair light lace boots, kid tops, size 8— THOMAS MOUNT- FORD, age 20, height 5 ft. 5| in., complexion fair„ hair dark brown, eyes hazel, burn mark under left jaw, 1st and 2nd toes of both feet crooked, cross and bracelet left arm, 3 dots on wrist; drc^ ( when last seen), black coat, dirty moleskin trousers, blue muffler with white spots, old grey cap, and the stolen boots- A native of Bucknall. Hill, Burslem. 28.— Burton- on- Trent ( County). — For stealing 20th ult., £ 6— A MAN, age about 22, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., complexion fair, hair light brown, clean- shaved, large nose, slight impediment in speech; dress, black jacket and vest, grey trousers. Of gen- tlemanly appearance. Had with him a bro^ jp Glad- stone bag, supposed stolen at Leicester. He calls at Y. M. C. A. Institutions for lodgings. A native of Sheffield. Information to Supt. Hicklin, Burton- on- Trent. 29.— Wolverhampton ( Borough).— For stealing between 11th and 22nd ult., 5 brown full size twiU sheets ; 1 white honeycomb counterpane, with white fringe ; 1 brown calico bolster case, fastens with tape ; 2 white calico pillow cases; 1 pair white calico drawers, needlework trimming ; 1 lady's silver geneva watch, No. 33431, plain white face, black figures, chased cases, silver round link pattern albert, with tassel and imitation threepenny- piece, attached—• ETHEL ROSE, alias YALLANCE, nge about 25, height 4 ft. 10i in.
