All announcements for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and cdl communications upon them, should be addressed to THE EDITOR OF THE POLICB GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YARD, LONDON, S. W. • 2. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 3. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. A. In all cases where a reward is offered the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions be clearly stated. 5. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property, will be prominently inserted, with detailed particulars, at a cost of 15s. per portrait, and of 7s. 611. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, including the expense of engraving on wood. • 6. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and, if the name of such person be required to be inserted, and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property mutt be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. A nnouncemenls of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and are alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. Theforcewhich causes particulars concerning delinquents or sto'en property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the anr. mncemeiUfor insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases, the officer signing the request for insertion of any announcement, will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only, be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, by cheque, crossed " Drummond < k Co.," Post Office Order payableat Parliament- st., Postal Order, or in Stamps. 13. Advertisements are accepted for the POLICE GAZETTE through Mr. James Willing, 125, Strand, London, the sole Agent, who will furnish the rates on application. 14. Cities and Boroughs therein, arranged in strict alphabetical order. 2.— Any additional copies of the GAZETTE beyond the number at present supplied will be forwarded on application in the form set forth in circular of the 7th of November, 1883. 3.— It is particularly requested that any coin- plaints as to the non- delivery or of irregularity in the date of delivery of the POLICE GAZETTE, may be at once notified to tho Editor. The following is a copy of the order which governs the circulation, by the Metropolitan Police, of advertisements, or reward bills, for the discovery of property or the detec- tion of crime. The Editor inserts it, in hope of preventing delays which sometimes occur in publishing such notices, on account of their not being in accordance with the regu- lations in force in the Metropolis :— 1. Printed band- bills, or other advertisements, offering a reward for the discovery of property or the detection of crime, whether printed and issued by the Metropolitian Police, or distributed and exhibited, with the sanction of the Commissioners, on the application of private persons, or of the Police of any County or Borough, must be clearly • expressed in relation to the following points— ( a) The amount of the reward. lb) The conditions on which it is payable. ( c) The name and address of the person by whom it will be paid. ( d) That the name and address of the printer appear thereon. . 2. No expression must be used in such an advertise- ment, in relation to property stolen, or criminally taken or disposed of, holding out any expectation that the reward will be paid on its return without the offonder being brought to trial, or without enquiry. NOTE.— There are 180 Stations of the Metropolitan Police Force at which Notices can be posted. APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT. METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT. 1.— A Division.— For stealing, 29th ult., a quan- tity of jewellery and a blueserge dress— ANNIE SAN- SOM, age 38, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion sallow, hair dark brown, eyes brown, very thick hands ( as though deformed or crushed), nails short and black, quiet manner and appearance; dress, blue serge dress, blue blouse with white spots, black bonnet trimmed white flowers. A cook. Warrant issued. 2.— C Division.— For stealing wearing apparel — ANNIE SHURROCK, age 20, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion fresh, hair dark; dress, black cashmere skirt, black satin bodice, toque hat, button boots. A native of Oxford. Warrant issued. 3.— E Division.— For forging and uttering a cheque for £ 31— LAWRENCE FREDERICK ROCK- LIFFE, age 30, height 5 ft. 10 in., complexion fair, hair light, eyes light blue; dress, black melton over- coat, light tweed suit, stand- up cellar, dark tie, black hard felt hat; occasionally wears a light tweed mackintosh. Warrant issued. 4.— P Division.— For conspiracy and fraud— ARTHUR LINTON, alias THOMAS and JONES ( late of 57, St. Michael's Hill, Bristol), age 24, height 5 ft. 11 in., complexion sallow, hair, slight moustache and eyes dark brown, good teeth ; dress, dark clothes ; of good address. May be found in provincial towns, hawking jewellery. Warrant issued. 5.— V Division.— For stealing a postal letter, 29th October last, and forging a postal order for £ 1, 30th October last— HERBERT VILLIERS, alias JAMES TERRY, age about 40, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., complexion dark, hair dark brown; dress, dark blue melton overcoat ( velvet collar), black jacket and vest, brown mixture trousers, cloth cap. Warrant issued. 6.— X Division.— For stealing, 31st ult., a cash- box and contents— WILLIAM GOODALL, age about 27, height about 5 ft. 5 in., complexion fair, hair and slight moustache light; has a peculiar slouching gait; dress, dark blue overcoat, grey trousers, lace boots, black hard felt hat; sometimes wears a cap. Stated he had been a ship's steward; may be found at sailors' boarding- houses. Warrant issued. Information to be forwarded to the Metropolitan Police Office, New Scotland Yard, S. W. clean shaved ; dress, dark coat, short trousers, high hat with hatguard ring therein, red socks, lace boots ; gentlemanly appearance. He represents himself to be the son of a wholesale chemist, of Belfast, or that he is connected with a firm of opticians at Glasgow. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. McWilliam, 26, Old Jewry, E. C. BERKSHIRE. 9.— Newbury ( County).— For stealing, 30th ult., £ 8 5s.— WALTER HENRY BULL, age 40, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion fresh, hair and whiskers brown, moustache sandy; dress, dark coat, dark check trou- sers, brown cap, old boots; of dirty appearance, walks lame, and carries a drover's stick. A labourer. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Robotham, Newbury. 10.— Reading ( Borough).— For stealing from his lodgings a silver geneva watch, No. 3369191— A man who gave the name of FREDERICK SILVER- STON or SYLVESTER, aged 36, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion fair, hair and moustache light, ears large and prominent, large wart right side of forehead; dress, double- breasted dark plaid jacket and vest, lined with blue serge, light tweed trousers, stand up collar, dark tie, black hard hat, nearly new military boots. He represented that he was a tailor, and was travelling for Lewis and Co., Clothiers, London ; and had coupons in his possession, which he gave to persons whom he measured for clothing on payment of 2s. Cd. Stated that he was going to Guildford. Warrant issued. ^ Information to Head Constable Tewsley, Reading. CITY OF LONDON. 7.— For embezzlement— WILLIAM SANDERS, late of 115, Met- ton Road, Wimbledon, age 30, height 5 ft. 10 in., slight build, complexion fresh, hair and moustache sandy ; dresses well. A tailor's cashier. Warrant issued. 8.— For obtaining money by false pretences— A MAN, age 35 to 40, height 5 ft. 7 in., hair dark, CHESHIRE. 11.— Broxton ( County).— For stealing a dark Irish frieze overcoat, blue lining, black bone buttons, nearly new; 1 silver lever watch, Swiss make, curb pattern, metal chain, with 2 medals, attached; 1 large red- and- white stripe silk handkerchief; 1 plain cloth jacket and vest, black bone buttons; 1 pair light lace boots— JOHN ALMOND, age 20, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion very pale, hair brown, eyes blue, girl's head tattooed left arm, sailor on right, 2 scars on chest. Of smart appearance. He enlisted at Birkenhead, on 6th inst., but absconded on 12th. Warrant issued. Information to the Deputy Chief Constable, Brox- ton. 12.— Oakmere ( County).— For obtaining, by false pretences, between 1st and 5th inst., at Over, food and lodgings, also a gentleman's silver lever watch, " Presented to Julius Pickstock" and probably " Winsford" scratched inside case — A man who gave the name of ERASTUS SAMUEL HOOLE LEWIS, age about 40, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., complexion, hair ( bald on top) and beard of about a week's growth, dark ; of good ad- dress ; dress, dark jacket and vest of rough material, black worsted trousers ( worn at knees), blue collar 2 T H E POLICE G A Z E T T E. Stated he was a native of Cedar Street, Manchester, and had come to instal electric lights at a railway station. Warrant issued. 13. Oakmere ( County).— For embezzling £ 29 16s. on 23rd November last— JOHN CHALLENOll, age about 36, height 5 ft. 8 in., rather stout build, com- plexion fresh, full face, hair ( cut short) light brown, eyes grey, speaks quickly, sometimes stammers, swings his right arm freely when walking; dress ( generally), light tweed suit, cap, and brown leather leggings. Native of Frodsham. Late Assistant Overseer of the Township of Frodsham Lordship. Absconded about 1st ult. Warrant issued. Information to Supt Johnson, Oakmere. CUMBERLAND. 14.— Brampton ( County).— For deserting his wife— GEORGE COOK, alias GEORGE CLARK, age about 40, height 5 ft. 11 in., complexion fresh, rather long features, hair dark brown, rather light mous- tache, eyes brown, cut mark about 3 in. long above left eye. A painter and paperhanger. Native of Netherfield Road, Liverpool. Is also known at Man- chester, Carlisle, Workington, and Penrith. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Hodgson, Brampton. DERBYSHIRE. 15.— Glossop ( Borough).—- For deserting his wife and family, leaving them chargeable to the Glossop Union— WILLIAM THOMAS RODGERS, age 34, height 5 ft. 2^ in., complexion sallow, hair ( bald on top) dark brown, eyes hazel, mole left of neck. A tailor. Is fond of drink. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Hodgson, Glossop. DURHAM. 16.— South Shields ( Borough).— For stealing, 6th inst., a lady's gold geneva watch, No. 110816, white dial, black figures, flowered back, a lady's small round link pattern gold chain attached— JOHN DAGLISH, alias TRACEY, age 40 to 50, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., complexion fair, hair ( inclined to curl, and turning grey) and moustache ginger, slightly bald; dress, black jacket and vest, dark brown check trousers, dark cap, blue muffler. Has in his possession a workman's tin bottle, " J. D." on brass plate thereon. He takes lodgings, represent- ing that he is working for the Telephone Company. Information to Chief Constable Morant, South Shields. ESSEX. 17.— Southend- on- Sea ( County).— For stealing 4 pairs of seamen's top- boots ( recovered)— GEORGE BRANSON, alias BRANSCOMBE, age 31, height about 5 ft. 6 in., complexion, hair, slight moustache ( clipped) and eyes dark, hollow face, high cheek- bones, cut scar on lip, of military appearance; dress, old monkey jacket, drab fustian and black vests, tight- fitting dark check trousers, dark blue scarf with white spots, black cap ( small knob on top), navvy's boots. Native of Gravesend, Kent Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Simmonds, Southend- on- Sea. FORFARSHIRE. 18.— Dundee ( City).— For failing to report— Licence Holder JAMES CRAIG, alias GEORGE WILSON, Scotch Register No. 3- 97, age 32, height 5 ft. 4| in., complexion pale, hair dark brown ( turn- ing grey and getting bald), eyes grey; cut scar above right eyebrow, 2 fencing foils crossed front of right forearm, " J. C." back of right forearm, several letters badly formed, narrow bracelet back of left wrist, " J. W." back of left hand. A shoemaker; and a native of Glasgow. Sentenced, at Glasgow High Court, 9th May, 1892, to 5 years penal servitude, for theft. Licenced 2nd January, 1897. If found, to be dealt with under the Prevention of Crimes Act, 1871, as amended by the Penal Servitude Act, 1891. Information to Chief Constable Dewar, Dundee. GLAMORGANSHIRE. 19.— Cardiff ( Borough).— For stealing, 15th inst. from his lodgings, 1 light terracotta coloured jacket suit, with composition buttons to match, usual pockets in jacket, hip- pocket in trousers; 1 sacque back three- quarter length overcoat, usual pockets, brown check lining, black buttons; 1 silver lever watch, No. 97356, no cap on works, marks on edge having been opened with a knife; 1 silver curb pat- tern albert chain— THOMAS GENT, age 33, height 5 ft. in., complexion florid, oval face, hair brown, heavy moustache dark, eyes grey, 5 dots back of right hand, " T." right wrist, cut scar bridge of nose, boil scar right hip; dressed in stolen clothing. An Army Reservist, formerly Gunner 58688, 13th Com- pany Southern Division Royal Artillery. A groom ; native of Abbotsham, near Bidoford, Devon. May seek employment as a groom. Warrant issued. Information to Head Constable McKenzie, Cardiff. HAMPSHIRE. 20. — Portsmouth ( Borotigh).— For stealing a dressing- bag ( recovered) — Expiree CHARLES SCHMtDT, alias CHARLES LAMBETH, JOHN ROBERTS and CHARLES ANDERSON, Office No. 3170- 96, ago 69, height 5 ft. 8f in., complexion fair, hair and eyes grey, scar back of neck, left groin and on each knee, wart left side of nose and right side of neck, fleshy lump front of right wrist, ruptured both sides; dress, dark blue overcoat, black felt hat ( flat top). Sentenced at Exeter Assizes, 22nd July, 1892, to 3 years penal servitude, for larceny. Licenced 20th October, 1894, and has since been convicted at Hastings, Brighton, and Exeter. GLS 326. Warrant issued. 21.— Portsmouth ( Borough).— For obtaining, by false pretences, 29th ult., a coat and vest — GEORGE WILLIAMS, age about 21, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion sallow, hair dark, walks badly; carried one hand in a sling; dress, dark clothes, dark skull cap. Stated he had come from London, where he had been employed at an exhibition. May be found at casual wards or common lodging- houses. Warrant issued. 22.— Portsmouth ( Borough).— On a warrant for obtaining 4 gold rings, by means of false pretences, on the 5th ult., and for failing to report— Supervisee WILLIAM BATES, alias ALBERT FOWLER, Office No. 2161- 96, age 35, height 5 ft. 8J in., complexion fair, hair brown, eyes hazel, slim build, face oval, scar left cheek- bone, mole left collar- bone, on stomach, back of neck, and several on both arms. Has been employed as a commission agent to a cutlery firm, and may seek similar employment. Sentenced at Gloucester Sessions, 4th April, 1894, to 1 year and 2 years police supervision for obtaining goods by false pretences, and at Portsmouth Borough Quarter Ses- sions, 5th April, 1895, to 15 months hard labour for a similar offence. 18. Information to the Chief Constable, Town Hall, Portsmouth. ISLE OF ELY. 23.— Wisbech ( County).— For larceny ( bailee)— JACK LANGSTAFF, age 35, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion fresh, hair, moustache and eyes brown, walks erect; dress, long dark overcoat ( with velvet collar), black diagonal coat and vest, black- and- blue mixture trousers, hard felt hat or light cap, lace boots; usually carries an orange- wood walking- stick with black horn handle, and has with him a small black bag. A draper's assistant; states he is a native of Hull. He has obtained several sums of money by pretending that he is about to receive a large sum, and is also heir to an estate at Whitby. Absconded 30th ult. Warrant issued. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Dockerill, Wisbech. ISLE OF WIGHT. 24.— Newport ( County).— For stealing, 22nd ult., .£ 13 10s. from her lodgings, at Yarmouth.— ADA CANNELL, age 29, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., slight build, complexion pale, hair dark brown, eyes dark, one tooth decayed on left side of upper jaw; dross, green dress, fawn jacket, or crimson cloth cape lined light fur and black fur collar, green hat with white hoops; a school- teacher. Supposed to have left Portsmouth for Victoria by the 12.10 p. m. train, 22nd ult. May be accompanied by her two stepdaughters, ages 19 and 16 ; 2 girls, ages 8 and 6, and 2 boys, ages 4 and 2. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Newport, Isle of Wight. KENT. 25.— Sandwich ( County).— For stealing, 10th inst., at Westgate- on- Sea, 1 black cheviot serge reefer jacket and vest; 1 black felt hat, dented at top; 1 gentleman's silver chain, twisted links, locket at- tached, with monogram " R. O." ; 1 lady's gold dress ring, set 5 pearls— A MAN, age about 22, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion fresh, hair dark, slight moustache brown, front teeth very bad colour, one broken off ; dress, long black frieze overcoat, light brown check trousers, brown kid gloves ; supposed wearing the other stolen clothes; lace boots, light golf cap, or may bo wearing the stolen hat. A shop assistant. He engaged a bed and sitting- room, but aftor staying about half- an- hour, took the above artioles and do- camped. Supposed wanted elsewhere for similar offences. Information to Supt. Chaney, Sandwich. 26.— Maidstone ( Borough).— For neglecting their children— CHARLES BARHAM, age 32, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion dark, moustache ginger; dress, dark coat, corduroy trousers, black hard felt hat. A furnace- hand. ELIZABETH BARHAM, age about 30, complexion dark, very tliin ( supposed to be wearing dark clothes). They are accompanied by five chddren ( two girls, one age 13 years, the other 7 months; and 3 boys, ages 10, 6, and 5 years respectively). Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Mackintosh, Maid- stone. 27.— Tunbridge Wells ( Borough).—¥ or stealing a £ 10 Bank of England note ( recovered), and a £ a note, No. 31281— HARRY YEATES, age 38, height 5 ft. 11 \ in., complexion dark, hair, whiskers and moustache dark brown, eyes blue; dress, grey cloth jacket and vest, corduroy trousers, black hard felt hat, or grey cap. A shoemaker; has been working as a sale porter. Absconded 5th inst. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Prior, Tunbridge Wells. LANCASHIRE. 28.— Garstang ( County).— For embezzlement, 2nd inst.— EDWARD ROBINSON, age 28, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., complexion fresh, hair light, round- shouldered, stoops slightly; dress, grey cloth suit ( trousers are darker than jacket and vest), black and white woollen scarf, brown cap, new lace boots. Native of Hornby, near Lancaster. May seek em ployment as a farm labourer. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Bourke, Bowgrave, Garstang. 29.— Liverpool ( City).— For failing to report— Licence Holder THOMAS WOODS, alias GEORGE FAUVEL and CHARLES HAYNES, Office No. 3699- 96, age 33, height 5 ft. 6^ in., complexion dark, hair black, eyes dark brown, flag front of right fore- arm, blue line back of left forearm, E back of left hand, right forefinger deformed at 1st joint. Sen- tenced, at Central Criminal ' Court, 6th March, 1893, to 5 years penal servitude, for burglary. Licenced 8th December, 1896. N T 522. Information to the Head Constable, Detective De partment, Liverpool. 30.— Manchester ( City).— For failing to report— Supervisee WILLIAM ROBSON, alias WILLIAM ANDERSON, WILLIAM PEARSON, THOMAS JOHNSON, WILLIAM EDWARDS and JAMES McGUINNESS, Office No. 382- 97, age 58, height 5 ft. 2 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes blue, abscess scar left jaw, large brown mark front of chest, burn mark back of right hand, corporal punishment marks on back, ruptured both sides. Native of Man- chester. Sentenced at Liverpool Assizes, 25th July, 1895, to 18 months hard labour, and 3 years police supervision, for larceny. 5729. Licence Holder WILLIAM ROBINSON, alias WIL- LIAM BROWNLESS, JOHN SMITH, WILLIAM JOHNSON, WILLIAM PENCEPT and WILLIAM JONES, Office No. 2640- 96, age 41, height 5- ft. 3 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes grey, scar left wrist, right eyebrow, mole on throat and on back, large brown birthmark all over left, hip and buttock. Sentenced, at Preston Sessions, 27th May, 1891, to 7 years penal servitude and 7 years police supervision, for school- breaking and larceny. Licenced 20th August, 1896. GLR 894. Licence Holder ANN KELLY, alias ANN KNOWLES and MARY WALKER, Office No. 3101- 96, age 39, height 4 ft. 1H in., complexion sallow, hair grey, eyes grey, several scars about head, 1 centre of forehead, right cheek and nose, and above left elbow, small white mole right side of neck, faint vaccination marks. Sentenced, at Oldham Sessions, 6th July, 1894, to 3 years penal servitude, for lar- ceny ( person). Licenced 5th October, 1896. W 23. Licence Holder MARY POOLE, alias MARY ANN MOSS, SARAH ANN MOSS and ELIZA DAYIES, Office No. 1821- 96, age 52, height 4 ft. 10 in., com- plexion sallow, hair brown, eyes brown, mole above right elbow, brown mark right side of neck, scar right eyebrow. Native of Macclesfield. Sentenced, at Manchester Sessions, 2nd February, 1893, to 5 years penal servitude and 3 years police supervision, for larceny. Licenced 2nd June, 1896. DT 159. Supervisee ALEXANDER RADCLIFFE, Office No. 40248, age 43, height 5 ft. ^ in., complexion dark, hair dark brown, eyes dark brown, large burn marks on back of both legs below the knees. Sentenced, at Manchester Sessions, 25th October, 1886, to 5 years penal servitude and 7 years police supervision, for larceny. Licenced 30th September, 1890. M 574.
