TUB PUBLISHED BY AUTHORITY. NEW SERIES. FRIDAY, JANUARY 29, 1897. VOL. XIY., NO. 1366. REaULATIONS. 1. All announcements for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communications upon them, should be addressed to THE EDITOR OF THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YARD, LONDON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions be clearly stated. 5. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property, will be prominently inserted, with detailed particulars, at a cost of 15s. per portrait, and of Is. 6d. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, including the expense of engraving on wood. €. Every announcement, iffor the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and, if the name of such person be required to be inserted, and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. A nnouncements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and are alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. Theforcewhich causes particulars concerning delinquents or sto'en property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the ann mncementfor insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases, the officer signing the request for insertion of any announcement, will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11. A nnouncem'nt. t for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only, be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office. New Scotland Yard, by cheque, crossed " Drummond < L- Co.," Post Office Order payable at Parliament- st., Postal Order, or in Stamps. 13. Advertisements are accepted for the POLICE GAZETTE through Mr. James Willing, 125, Strand, London, the sole Agent, who will furnish the rates on application. 14. Warrant issued. 2.— T Division.— For embezzling £ 1 Is. 5d.— JAMES ' METCALFE, alias ANDERSON and TRILBY, age 22, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion sal- low, hair brown, eyes dark, prominent nose, small red projection from each nostril, narrow forehead, pointed chin, splay- footed; dress, brown coat, light grey suit, brown soft felt hat ( dented at top), carried a light- coloured covert coat. CITY OF LONDON. 3.— For attempting to obtain £ 775 on a bill of exchange by false pretences— T. A. HEGEWALD, alias BARKER, late of 19, High Street, Stoke New- ington, age 22, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion, hair and slight moustache dark, of smart appearance; dress, dark overcoat, frock coat, high silk hat. Ab- sconded about 29th ult. May be accompanied by his wife, height about 5 ft. 4 in. Warrant issued. AYRSHIRE. 6.— Ayr ( County).— Woodcut portrait and description of HUGH McLEAN, or DAVIDSON, alias GRANT and WILSON, whose apprehen- sion is sought for stealing, 15th inst., a pony and cart ( recovered), age 30, height 5 ft. 3 in., stout build, complexion fresh, hair black, slight moustache dark, eyes dark grey, several small cut marks on back of head, one scar extending from crown 2 in. down right side, and one from crown 1 in. down left side of head, tattooed cross on right upper arm, " H. M. L." in hollow of elbow, two anchors, bust of a man, cros3 with " P. S. P." and " R. C. A. B." underneath on forearm, half bracelet on wrist, " My true love " within circle on back of hand, ring on two middle fingers, cross on left upper arm, ship in full sail, rose, man- o'- war's man, anchor, cross flags, and " In Memory of my Mother " on fore- arm, bracelet on wrist, " II. M. C." between forefinger and thumb, ring on each finger, and patch of tattooing on back of left hand; dress, blue serge jacket and vest, dark tweed trousers, blue spotted cravat, dark tweed cap. BEDFORDSHIRE. 7.— Amothill ( County).— For fowl stealing, 15th inst.— FREDERICK WEBB, a- e 2G, height 5 ft. 4 is., complexion dark, linir dark brown, eyes dark, walks badly, carries his heajl fornard.; dress, dirty cord jacket, dark rest, grey trousers, light cloth cap. Native of Maulden, Beds. WILLIAM PAGE, age 26, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion pale, hair dark brown, eyes grey, tattooed cross, dove, etc., on right arm, walks smartly; dress ( supposed), double- breasted blue cloth jacket, brown cord trousers, light cloth cap, lace boots. Native of Marston, Beds. Has served in the Army. Warrant issued. Information to Deputy Chief Constable James, Ampthill. BERKSHIRE. 8.— Reading ( Borough).— For stealing from his lodgings a silver geneva watch, No. 3369191— A man who gave the name of FREDERICK SILVER- STON or SYLVESTER, aged 36, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion fair, hair and moustache light, ears large and prominent, large wart right side of forehead; dress, double- breasted dark plaid jacket and vest, lined with blue serge, light tweed trousers, stand up collar, dark tie, black hard hat, nearly new military boots. He represented that he was a tailor, and was travelling for Lewis and Co., Clothiers, London ; and had coupons in his possession, which he gave to persons whom he measured for clothing on payment of 2s. 6d. Stated that he was going to Guildford. Warrant issued. Information to Head Constable Tewsley, Reading. 9.— Windsor ( Borough).— For being concerned, with others in custody, in breaking into a railway arch, and stealing a leaden pump ( recovered)— VICTOR HARDY, age 17, height about 5 ft. 3 in., rather stout build, complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes grey. A native of Windsor. THOMAS TUR- NER, age 21, height about 5 ft. 9 in., slight build, complexion dark, hair dark brown, eyes dark. A native of Windsor. This man is also wanted for stealing 1 gold bangle, gold brooch, and 2 silver brooches ( 1 recovered). Information to Head Constable Armour, Windsor. CUMBERLAND. 10.— Penrith ( County).— For deserting his wife and 3 children, leaving them chargeable to the Alston and Garrigell Union— MARTIN McGREVY, age about 56, height 6 ft. 1 in., slight build, complexion fresh, hair ( thin) and eyes grey, 2 boil marks on neck, 1 on left thigh. Tramps the county, sharpening saws. Frequents common lodging- houses. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Bell, Penrith. DENBIGHSHIRE. 11.— Wrexham ( County).— For stealing a suit of clothes— GEORGE JONES, age 36, height 5 ft. in., complexion sallow, hair and moustache dark brown, has lost two upper front teeth, stoops when walking; dress, dark jacket and vest, postman's trou- sers. An Army Reservist; native of Ruabon. He was sentenced to one month imprisonment at Welshpool, in October last, for stealing tools, in name of WIL- LIAM ANSON. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Jones, Wrexham. DEVONSHIRE. 12.— Exeter ( County).— Woodcut portrait and description of JOHN HENRY PHILLIPS, a medical herbalist, late of Stonehouse, Plymouth, whose ap- prehension is sought for failing to surrender to his bail, charged with attempted abortion, age about 45, height 5 ft. 7 in., stout build, full blotchy face, red nose, hair ( turning grey) and moustache dark, eyes dark brown, rather large head; appear- ance of a heavy drinker; dress, dark overcoat and suit, flat- topped felt hat, wears a ring with ( sup- posed) blue stone on third finger left hand. He left Plymouth by night- mail train on 17th, and was seen at Paddington on morning of l8th' inst. ( He looks older than in abo\ e portrait.) May endeavour to leave the country. « Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable of Devon, Exeter. DUBLIN. 13.— Dublin ( City).— For embezzling, on 21st September last,'£ 222, the moneys of H. M. Postmaster- General— JAMES BURSLEM LOVEROCK, age about 40, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., slight build, com- plexion pale, heavy sandy moustache, prominent nose, large eyes; wnen last seen wore dark overcoat, ' black hat. An ex- clerk at the General Post Office, Dublin. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Lanktree, Detective Depart- ment, Exchange Court, Dublin. FIFESHIRE. 14.— Cupar ( County).— For obtaining food and lodgings by false pretences— HENRY LITTLETON, alias CAPTAIIN ROBERTSON, STEVENS, RICHARD, etc. ( 1039- 93, and Scottish Register, 47- 96), age 27, height 5 ft. 6f in., full face, hair brown, slight moustache Slight, eyes dark, rather heavy and sullen expression, burn mark on wrist and back of left hand, 1st and 3rd fingers are con- tracted. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Bremner, Cupar. HAMPSHIRE. 15.— Aldershot ( County).— For larceny, 21st ult. — ARTHUR SCOTT, age 27, height 5 ft. 10 in., slight build, complexion pale, hair dark brown, eyes blue, slight moustache, 2 teeth project slightly, cut mark under chin and on right 3rd finger, 2 small moles on right forearm; dress ( when last seen), grey overcoat, light trousers, light blue peak cap. An Army Reservist of the 3rd Dragoon Guards. May seek employment as a waiter, or may be found in company of theatricals. Native of Southwark. His modus operandi is to call at houses, stating he is a collector for the local gas company, and has come to collect the money from the automatic meter, he opens the meter by cutting the lead fastening, and steals the contents. May be carrying a yellowish carpet bag, which is supposed to contain his tools. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Miller, Aldershot. 16.— Bournemouth ( County).— For stealing, 18th inst., 1 gentleman's silver lever watch, minute hand bent, dial cracked, very dirty case; 2 ladies' silver geneva watches, Nos. 57533 and 9304 ; 1 gentleman's silver geneva hunter watch, No. 24512, two initials engraved on case ; 1 gentleman's silver Waltham lever watch, No. 1788544 ; 1 lady's gold geneva lever watch, visible movements, bow nearly worn through, 423 scratched on bevel; 1 lady's gold watch- case, No. 92380; 1 gentleman's silver English lever, with jeunette glass— A man, age about 25, height about 5 ft. 7 in., slight moustache sandy ; dress, light tweed jacket, black hard felt hat, carried a whip. Appearance of a costermonger. 17.— Bournemouth ( County).— For obtaining, 14th inst., by false pretences, £ 50 gold, and £ 50 in Bank of England £ 5 notes, Nos. 22716, 22717, 22718, 22719, 22865, 25098, 42532, 97845, 99758, and 22864, from the London and Midland Bank— WALTER BOND, late of Alexander Road, Moss Side, Manchester, and late manager of Moss Side Branch of the London and Midland Bank, age about 30, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 in., long face, thick lips, prominent nose, large ears, clean shaved. When last seen was wearing long grey overcoat, with velvet collar, and cap. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Foster, Bournemouth. 18.— Winchester ( City) — Woodcut portrait and description of ALFRED OFFER, whose apprehension is sought for embezzlement, age 47, height 5 ft. 5 in,, stout build, complexion fresh, hair ( cut short, turning TUESDAY, JANUARY 12, 1897. T H E POLICE GAZETTE. 3 grey), moustache and eyes brown, full face, high forehead, right eyebrow missing, several pock- marks on face, short neck and legs ; dress ( when last seen. 7th inst.), dark blue chesterfield overcoat ( black vel- vet collar), dark cloth trousers, dark brown soft felt hat with wide brim. Had with him a new brown leather portmanteau, a small black hand- bag, and 3 paper parcels, containing a new grey worsted cloth suit ( morning coat), a black serge suit, 2 pairs of lace boots, a black mackintosh, walking stick, umbrella and a large pair of field- glasses. A master painter; native of Winchester. A Past Provincial Grand Master of the Manchester Unity of Oddfellows; late Secretary of the Industry of Hants Lodge, and has in his possession about £ 200 belonging to that Society. Associates with betting men. Is fond of billiards. The photograph was taken about 9 years ago. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Felton, Winchester. 19.— Portsmouth ( Borough).— For obtaining, by false pretences ( telling fortunes) a lady's 14- carat gold watch, No. 551, plain dial, flowered back, gold albert, with bar and swivel, 2 gold hearts attached— A woman, name ( supposed) AMELIA BAINEY, age about 30, height 5 ft. 1 or 2 in., well built, com- plexion and hair dark; dress, grey shawl and dress black hat, wears a large white apron. Carried a baby in her shawl, and had with her a small square open basket containing coloured glass ornaments. Travels ' the country, with her husband, in a dark van, drawn by a brown horse. 20.— Portsmouth ( Borough.)— For stealing dressing- case ( recovered)— CHARLES ANDERSON ( supposed false), age about 60, height 5 ft. 10 or 11 in., stout build, hair, beard, whiskers and mous tache grey, military appearance ; wearing dark blue overcoat, black felt hat, with flat top. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Town Hall, Portsmouth. 21.— Portsmouth ( Borough). — GUISEPPE NARADONE, Case No. 23, 24th July last, not now • wanted. Warrant withdrawn. 22.— Southampton ( Borough.)— For obtaining goods by false pretences— W. WARD, alias COL- LINS, age 30 to 33, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 in., com- plexion pale, hair ( very thick and frizzy at sides, thin on crown of head) and moustache light; speaks with north country accent. He opens a general - dealer's shop, and orders goods from tradesmen; afterwards disposes of the shop and goods, and de- camps. Warrant issued. 23.— Southampton ( Borough).— Forfailingtosur- render to his bail on 7th inst., charged with stealing lead— WALTER EDMUNDS, age 57, height 5 ft 5 in., complexion fair, hair and eyes grey, cut mark left thumb, prominent nose, stoops slightly. Is ad- dicted to drink; may be found in the company of prostitutes. A lodging- house keeper. Supposed to have left Southampton about 26th ult., when he had in his possession about £ 600. Wxas accompanied by a woman, age 29, height 5 ft. b in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes hazel. Warrant issued. 24.— Southampton ( Borough).— For larceny GEORGE GALPIN, age 14, height 4 ft. 2 or 3 in., complexion fair, hair and eyes brown, dimple on chin; dress, grey plaid jacket and vest, check trousers ( patched at knees), light cap, woman's boots. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Southampton. HEREFORDSHIRE. 25.— Leominster ( County).— For stealing ( bailee) 24th ult., a gentleman's safety bicycle, " The Eclipse Machine Co., Oldham," on head and back mud- guard, " Rothwell" on frame in gold letters ( partly erased), pneumatic tyres ( front smooth, back non- slipping, worn), direct spokes, handle- bar, stem and seat- rod newly plated, new copper rivets in front of saddle— JOHN FLACKET, alias H. JONES, age 24 to 28, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion dark, hair black, slight dark moustache, whiskers of about a week's growth; dress, long double- breasted overcoat, two vests, dark cloth trousers, peak cap ( supposed), militia boots. A corporal of the 4th Battalion North Staffordshire Militia; native of Lichfield, Staffordshire. Warrant issued. 26.— Leominster ( County).— For obtaining £ 18 by means of a trick— A man known as CURLEY, of Leicester, age 25 to 28, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., com- plexion fresh, hair ( curly at back) and slight mous- tache light, rather long features; dress ( when last seen), light suit, long drab- coloured overcoat, drab coloured hat. Supposed native of Leicester. JOE BIRD, age 28 to 30, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion, hair and slight moustache dark; dress ( when last seen), dark jacket with skirts, vest and trousers, black hard felt hat. Supposed native of Birmingham. These men are horse- copers, and attend fairs, reposi- tories, etc., and are known at Birmingham, Leicester, Nottingham, and other large towns. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Ovens, Leominster. 27.— Hereford ( City).— For failing to report— Supervisee WILLIAM HARRIS, Office No. 39788, age 58, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion ruddy, hair brown ( turning grey), eyes grey, scar left knee, left shin, and top of head. Sentenced at Hereford, 30th December, 1889, to 6 months hard labour and 7 years police supervision, for larceny. Information to the Chief Constable, Hereford. HERTFORDSHIRE. 28.— Hemel Hempstead( CWn< 2/).— For neglect- ing to maintain his child— HENRY PARKER, alias SMITH and LOVERIDGE, age about 45, height 5 ft 6 in., complexion very dark, hair, moustache and beard dark, eyes hazel; dress, old dirty clothes, short gaiters, soft felt hat, painted crown. Travels the country, repairing umbrellas. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Frogley, Hemel Hempstead. 29.-— Watford ( County).— For larceny ( bailee)— FRANK SMEDLEY, alias FRANCIS GEORGE SEA- GRAVE, age 34, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., complexion fair, hair dark brown, eyes grey, wears folding glasses. Warrant issued. Information to Capt. Wymer, Deputy Chief Con- stable, Watford. ISLE OF ELY. £ 1 REWARD. 30.— March ( County).— For leaving his chil- dren chargeable to Doddington Union— THOMAS COOPER, age 50, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion and hair dark ( turning grey), lias an impediment in his speech. A navvy; native of March. May be found on public works. Warrant issued. The above reward will be paid by the Guardians of the above Union for such information as will lead to the arrest of COOPER. Information to Supt. Dockerill, March. LANARKSHIRE. 31.— Motherwell ( County).— Portrait and des- cription of JAMES M'GHEE, whose apprehension is sought for culpable homicide, at Wishaw, 4th inst., age about 30, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., com plexion fresh, hair and moustache light brown, fresh cut mark on fotehead, walks erect, of smart appearance; dress, black cord coat and vest, dark striped trousers, black hard hat, red tie with black spots, light lace boots. An ironwork's labourer. Native of Balleymena, Ireland. Has in his possession silver lever watch, No. 90455, and silver chain, of which he may endeavour to dispose. May also have a revolver. Information to Supt. Morrison, Motherwell. LANCASHIRE. 32.— Liverpool ( City).— For absconding from the Reformatory ship, Akbar," while on licence, on or about 7th inst.— THOMAS E. PRICE, age about 19, height 5 ft. 5 in., slight build, complexion fair, hair brown, eyes blue, scar over right eye, small round scar inside right calf; dress ( when last seen), mate's uniform, viz., round reefer jacket with brass buttons, blue woollen guernsey, peak cap with gold braid on front. Information to the Head Constable, Detective De- partment, Liverpool. 33.— Salford ( Borough).— For failing to report — Supervisee JOHN CROSBIE, alias SUTCLIFFE, SMITH and JAMES SMITH, Office No. 129- 96, age 68, height 5 ft. 6J in., complexion fresh, hair grey ( bald), eyes blue, scar back of left forearm near elbow, two on left cheek, one outside right forearm ( bend of elbow), small scar first knuckle right middle finger, right ear, and centre of back, crucifix outside left upper arm, three flags on ball front of left forearm, heart pierced with arrow bend of left arm, bracelet ( indistinct) left wrist, shield centre of right forearm, flag below ditto, mole above right nipple. Sentenced at Manchester City Sessions, August 3rd, 1893, to 3 years penal servitude and 2 years police supervision, for larceny ( jiejson). Licenced 10th January, 1896. She calls at high- class schools, representing herself to be the wife or daughter of a clergyman, and is desirous of placing some members of her family as boarders; after coming to terms, she pretends to have left her bag somewhere, and obtains a sum of money from the principal. She was convicted at York Assizes, on 5th November, 1887, of fraud, and sentenced to 3 months imprisonment, in name of MARY SHAW BEELEY; at Stafford Quarter Sessions, 1st January, 1889, for false pretences, and sentenced to 6 months imprisonment. Is identical with MRS. MOULSON, MRS. MORTON, MRS. MACGREGOR, GERTRUDE EMILY BLUNT and MARY BEATRICE MANNING, wanted elsewhere. She has also used the names of MISS HARTLEY, MARY B. HARTLAND, MRS. NORTHAMPTONSHIRE. 88.— Northampton ( Borough).— About to be com- mitted for trial at the next February Assizes, on 6 charges of burglary, between the 20th and 26th. inst. — Licence Holder GEORGE BLOGG, alias CHARLES MANN and GEORGE SMITH, Office No. 2756- 96, age 28, height 5 ft. 2| in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes hazel, defective vision in left eye, scar outside right eye, left collar- bone, large ditto front of left upper arm, between 1st joint and top oi! 4th left finger, outside right forearm, outside right thigh, inside left knee, brown mole under left foot, and between 1st and 2nd joints under big toe. A groom ; native of Birmingham. His modus operandi is to conceal himself sometimes on licenced premises, and after the inmates have retired he ransacks the place and breaks out. In other cases he breaks into shops and dwelling- houses by means of the back garden, and breaking a square of glass in the window removes the fastening. Three other burglaries have been traced to him in this county within the same period; one at Marlborough, Wilts, on the 3rd inst. He admits committing similar offences between Bir mingham, Marlborough, Northampton, and Man- chester, since he was released from prison. Sen- tenced, at Birmingham Assizes, 28th July, 1894, to 3 years penal servitude for burglary. Licenced 12th December, 1896. W 332. Information to Chief Constable Mardlin, North- ampton.
