All announcements for insertion in the PonicE GAZETTE, and all communications upon them, should be addressed to THE EDITOR OF THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YAKD, LONDON, S. W. • 2. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 3. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions be clearly stated. 5. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property, will be prominently inserted, with detailed particulars, at a cost of 15 « . per portrait, and of Is. 6cI. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, including the expense of engraving on wood. 6. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rankthan Superintendent; and, if the name of such person be required to be inserted, and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. A nnouncements of aV persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and art alphab'tically arranged by counties. 9. Theforcewhich causes particulars concerning delinquents or sto'en property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the anr. mncement/ or insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases, the officer signing the request for insertion of any announcement, trill be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only, be in the usual form, and accompanicd by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, by cheque, crossed " Drummond < k Co.," Post Office Order payable at Parliament- st., Postal Order, or in Stamps. 13. Advertisements are accepted for the POLICE GAZETTE throuoh Mr. James Willing, 125, Strand, London, the sole Agent, who wilt furnish the rates on application. 14. SPECIAL NOTICE. APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT. IDENTIFICATION OF PRISONERS. THE EDITOR requests that Chief Officers of Police, when forwarding for identifica- tion by the Metropolitan Police the Photo- graphs and descriptive forms of Persons in custody, will please see that the specific offence is stated, e. g. :— Stealing £ 1,000 from bank ; stealing pair of boots from shop door; stealing bale of silk, van unattended, & c., & c. This may often prove • a ready means of recognition, and Judges have recently complained of the absence of such particulars in dealing with previous convictions. METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT. 1.— Criminal Investigation Department. — For obtaining money by false pretences— E. EVANS, alias WILLIAM DAWKIN, EDWARDS, TURNER, etc., age about 50, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., complexion sallow, hair, moustache and straggling whiskers dark ( turning grey), eyes grey, very plausi- ble manner, speaks with either Scotch or Irish accent; dress, black frock- coat, dark trousers, high hat. He calls on persons who have recently brought out an in- vention, representing that he is sent by the editor of a newspaper to get the particulars of the invention, in order that an article may be inserted in the paper, and then obtains a small sum of money for a certain number of papers which are to contain the article which he states he is about to write. Warrant issued. 2.— B Division.— Portrait and description of RAOUL EUGENE LA ROCHE, a Frenchman, whose apprehension is sought for stealing £ 175 7s. 7d., on 26th ult., age 26, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion sal- low, hair dark brown, eyes ( large) dark, long thin neck, carries his head forward, drops right shoulder; dress, black overcoat, black jacket and vest, check trousers, hard felt hat, patent boots. Warrant issued. 3.— G. Division.— For stealing, 1st ult., 2 gold safety- pin brooches, set turquoise and pearls ( one re- covered), and a lady's 18- carat gold dress ring, set 10 old brilliants— W. H. THOMPSON, alias HENRY VERNON; age about 33, height 5 ft. 2 or 3 in., com- plexion sallow, hair ( very thin) and moustache light brown, slight cast in one eye ( supposed right); dress, black morning coat and vest, dark trousers, blue cravat, black hard felt hat; shabby appearancc. Warrant issued. 4.— G. Division.— For obtaining, 22nd ult., 18 diamonds, value £ 43 15s. Od., by means of a worth- less cheque on the London and South Western Bank, Notting Hill Branch— LOUIS W. SPYERS, a Dutch Jew, age about 28, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fair, hair and moustache light; dresses well, wears long light or dark overcoat, high silk hat or light cap, button boots. Native of Amsterdam. Warrant issued. 5.— VV Division.— For stealing £ 50, in £ 5 Bank Of England notes; £ 50 gold; 3 ladies' gold rings ( 1 marquise, set blue enamel and diamonds, 1 set 3 pearls and diamonds, 1 gipsy, seit 7 diamonds); 2 gold braoelets ( 1 set rubies and pearls, 1 set large diamond and studded with pearls)— HILDA LUSON, age 15 J, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion swarthy, hair ( frizzy) dark brown, eyes brown, left foot deformed, wears a club boot, and walks with a stick; dress, brown double- breasted melton coat, black fur collar, dark navy blue serge dress, fawn- coloured felt hat trimmed green velvet and black ostrich tips. Native of London. Absconded 29th ult. Information to be forwarded to the Metropolitan Police Office, New Scotland Yard, S. W. CITY OF LONDON. 6.— For forgery— WILLIAM REES, late of 51 and 52, Aldersgate Street, E. C., and 10, Hyde Park Man- sions, W., age 55 to 60, height about 5 ft. 10 in., com- plexion ruddy, hair, whiskers ( cut to point) and mous- tache iron grey, well- built; of good address and dis- tinguished appearance; dress, dark chesterfield over- ooat, dark suit, high silk hat with mourning band. An artificial flower manufacturer. A Welshman. Is well- known in North of England. 7.— Forforgery.— LUKE LEO JAMES DUR ANT, late of 28, St. Martin's Lane, Cannon Street, E. C., and 47, New Cross Road, S. E., age 30 to 35, height 5 ft. 10 in. to 6 ft., slight build, complexion fresh, hair and long moustache ( curled at ends) light; of gentle- manly appearance; dresses well. Warrant issued. 8.— For embezzlement— J. F. GLADWIN, late of 2, Gresham Road, Brixton, age 24, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., complexion fair, clean- shaved, hair ( bushy) brown, square- shaped head, coming to point at chin, left arm slightly bent; dress, light fawn overcoat, dark jacket suit, low- crowned wide- brimmed felt hat. A clerk. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. 9.— For stealing money— ALFRED HENRY SHARMAN, late of 13, Shacklewell Row, Dalston, age 32, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion fresh, rather red face, hair and slight moustache light; dresses well. A checker on the Midland Railway. Absconded 12tih ult. Is accompanied by his wife, age 34, tall, of delicate appearance. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. CAMBRIDGESHIRE. 12.— Cambridge ( Borough). — For stealing, 22nd ult., 1 gentleman's gold watch, No. 17907, opew face, white dial, crystal glass, key winding, " Pre- sented to F. W. H. Ginn, by his parents, on his 21st birthday, Nov., 11th, 1891," engraved on inner case, initials F. W. H. G." on back; 1 gold curb- pattern chain with spade half- guinea pendant, dated about 200 years ago, and a lizard- skin purse, containing some bills and about £ 1 18s. 0d.— FRED DONO- VAN, age about 18, height about 5 ft. 7 in., hair dark brown, blind left eye ( eyelid closed); dress, shabby grey suit, peak cap. A plumber. He stated he had been sent to execute some repairs, and was allowed to go to the upper part of the house, where he remained about five minutes, and left, taking the articles with him. He left Cambridge by the 2.15 p. m. train, 22nd ult., booking for King's Cross on his way to Caterham, or New Cross, when he was carrying a wooden box, about 2 ft. long, tied with cord. CHESHIRE. 13.— Egremont ( County).— For stealing, 30th ult., from an hotel at West Kirby, 1 dull gold brooch, diamond in centre, in an oval- shaped morocco leather case, vacant place for earring at each end; 1 gold brooch, made out of 2 earrings, to match the above, with diamond in centre of each earring ; 1 gold chain bracelet; 1 gold bracelet, oval shape, with clasp and chain, in ca « a lined with blue velvet, and stamped " Burns, Bold Street, Liverpool " ; 1 lady's gold ring, set 3 diamonds; 1 lady's gold ring, set 1 diamond ( set rather high) ; 1 lady's gold chain ( thin), had attached a watch key and a small gold locket; 1 gold safety- pin, horse- shoe pattern, set pearls; 1 gold [( large size) breast pin, horse- shoe pattern, set 5 diamonds, and a black and red silk tie, in which the breast- pin was fastened ; 1 black onyx brooch, about 1 in. in length, oval shape, with shape of bird, con- sisting of pearls in centre; 1 dark grey overcoat, sacque shape, partly lined with black silk, 2 pockets and ticket- pocket inside, and usual pockets outside, which contained several letters and 3 telegrams, ad- dressed Mr. Seddon, Marysville, King's Gap, Hoy- lake," and some " Mr. Seddon, New Hydro. Hotel, West Kirby " ; 1 soft black felt hat, American shape, high crown; 1 black mask, trimmed with black lace, about 2 in. long; 1 4< yk brown leather purse, con- taining £ 4 or £ 5 in gold; 1 ordinary fold- over purse, containing 10s. in silver, and several postage stamps. — JOSEPH REYNOLDS ( supposed false), age about 37, height about 5 ft. 8 in., complexion dark, face blotched, long thin features, hair ( thin on top) and long moustache brown, one eye bloodshot, mark over left eye, small scar on nose, of dissipated appear- ance ; wearing the stolen overcoat and hat. dark crey trousers, patent composition cuff's and collar. Sup posed a clever hotel thief. Information to Chief Supt. Hindley, Egremont. * . ESSEX, 16.— Brentwood ( Countyj7— For larceny, 12tli ult. — A MAN, age 25 to 30, height, 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., com- plexion fresh, thin face, hair and long moustache light brown, leans to left when steeling; dress, short blue jacket, brown striped trousers, dark cloth cap, old lace boots. Supposed native tof Norwich. He per- forms with a rope in public- houses, by getting " some person to tie him up, and th § n, extricates himself, also chews glass and puts red- hot irons in his mouth. States he has been a soldier. He was traced to Ipswich on 14th ult. ' , Information to Supt. Allen, Brentwood. 17.— Southend- on- Sea( C( Mm « i/).— For deserting his wife and family— GEORGE PARTOON, age 35, height 5 ft. 11 in., complexion fresh, hair and mous- tache brown, eyes blue, scars on chin ; dress, light tweed jacket and vest, light tightrfitting cord trousers, skull cap. A groom, but miy be employed as a " labourer on public works. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Simmonds, Southend- ou- Se t plaid suit. ARTHUR LOCK, soil of above, age about 30, height 5 ft. 10 or 11 in-, very upright, complexion dark; dress, p^ aid suit. Gipsies or. haw- kers, the l'ornier travels with a V$ n and 2 horses, the latter with a van and an old grey horse. Sup- posed known in the Deer Forest^ Gloucestershire. Warrants issued. Lewis, Bromyard. 25.— Ledbury ( County).— For larceny,- 16th ult.— A MAN, age 26, height 5 ft. 5 in., rather stout build, complexion sallow, hair brown; dress, dark clothes and cap. May endeavour to enlist. Information to Supt. Phillips, Ledbury. CUMBERLAND. £ 1 REWARD. 14.— Penrith ( County).— For deserting his three children, leaving them chargeable to the Penrith Union— JAMES HEWER, age about 40, height 5 ft. 6 in., hair and moustache dark, round features. A quarryman; native of Cumberland. Is probably working i « a quarry hi the North of England or in Scotland. The above reward will be paid by the Guardians of the Penrith Union for the apprehension of newer. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Bell, Penrith. GLAMORGANSHIRE. 18.— Cardiff, Barry Dock,( County).— Forfaiting to report— Licence Holder THOMAS PEARCE, alias THOMAS JACKSON and THOMAS CARTER, Office No. 3206- 96, age 41, height 5- ft. 5^ in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown ( turning1 grey, thin on top), scar centre of back of head, outside left eyebrow, left forearm, point of right elbow, between ring and 4th right fingers, numerous scars both sides of belly, scar left side of back, inside and outside right knee, top aiid inside left knee, front of left shin, front of right instep and left forearm, T. P., cross, N. W. T. and 4 dots, back of left forearm, anchor and part of ship back of right forearm. Sentenced at Central Crimi- nal Court, 16th October, 1893, to 4 years penal servitude for burglary. Licenced 20th October, 1896. G N T 592. Warrant issued. 20.— Cardiff ( Borough).— For obtaining 5th ult., 2 mackintosh overcoats by false pretences— A man, who gave the name of T. HAINS, age about 35, height 5 ft. 10 in., complexion fair, hair light brown, mous- tache light; dress, black jacket and vest, blue striped trousers, long white shirt cuffs, light cap. Appear- ance of a draper's assistant. Stated he had been sent by another outfitter. Warrant issued. 21.— Cardiff ( Borough).— For stealing, 9th ult., 1 sacque- back dark grey overcoat, black bone buttons, usual pockets ; 1 pair licrht lace boots, wide welts, size 6— WILLIAM STEPHENS, age 21, height 5 ft. 5 in., small moustache light. Has been em- ployed as foreman at a joinery and wood- turning factory. Left about a month ago for Birmingham taking with him a large box of carpenter's tools, a new brown mackintosh and a new blue melton cloth overcoat. Supposed native of Wolverhampton, Warrant issued. Lacy, Chatham 29.— Sandgate ( County).— For deserting his wife and children, leaving them chargeable to the Elham Union, 31st October, 1896— JAMES THOMAS CUR- TIS, age 50, height 5 ft. 10 in., slight build, com- plexion fair, ginger moustache, cut scar left wrist; dress, dark cloth jacket, check vest, cord trousers, cloth cap, heavy lace boots. Waghorn, Sandgate. 30.— Folkestone ( Borough).— For embezzling £ 3 10s. 0d.— THOMAS YOUNG, age 21, height 5 ft. 11 in., rather stout build, complexion fair, hair light, sharp nose; well dressed. Late a pianoforte maker's, manager. Is well known as an amateur vocalist in East Kent. May seek employment in theatrical or operatic companies, or at musio hails. Absconded 5th inst. Warrant issued. Taylor, Folkestone. 31.— Margate ( Borough).— For failing to appear to his recognizances on 6th October last— ARTHUR NFTVIL EYRE ( supposed false), age 21 ( looks older), height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, clean shaved, eyes blue. Was defendant in a recent action for false imprisonment and malicious prosecution. Falsely represents himself to be connected with Messrs. Eyre and Spottiswoode, Queen's Printers.
