All announcements for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communications upon them, should be addressed to THE EDITOE OF THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YARD, LONDON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning persons whose apjireiKuoi^. i is sought will be ' nserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be talcen upon them by another force. 3. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions be clearly slated. 5. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property, will be prominently inserted, with detailed particulars, at a cost of 15s. per portrait, and of 7s. ( id. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, including the expense of engraving on wood. 6. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officerofnot less rank than Superintendent; and, if the name of such person be required to be inserted, and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. A nnouncements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and are alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. Theforcewhich causes particulars concerning delinquents or sto'en property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases, the officer signing the request for insertion of any announcement, will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only, be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office. SPECIAL NOTICE. An inventor lias patented a composition for taking casts of footprints in any soft ground, and Government has acquired the right to use this invention in any part of the United Kingdom. It is anticipated that it will prove of value occasionally in criminal cases, especially in rural districts, and any Police Force that wishes to have particulars of it is invited to apply to the Home Office confidentially for that purpose. Warrant issued. 3.— K Division.— For housebreaking, 22nd ult. — ROBERT SIDNEY HUDSON, age 25, height 5 ft. 7i in., complexion sallow, hair dark brown, eyes grey, coat of- arms front of left arm, part of bracelet, R. S. E back left wrist, heart pierced by arrow back left hand, sailor, part of wreath front of right arm, scar inside left thumb and back of right arm, has an impediment in speech; dress ( supposed), dark clothes, dark cloth peak cap, brown lace boots. Warrant issued. 4.— K Division. — For carnally knowing his daughter ( under the age of 16) on 12th October last— JOHN SALTER alias CRACKER, age 40, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, supposed clean shaved, eyes hazel ; dress ( supposed), dark overcoat, dark jacket and vest, cord trousers, black hard felt hat with mourning band, or dark peak cap, lace boots. A labourer; native of " West Ham, Essex. May be found on public works Warrant issued. 5.— V Division.— For obtaining money by false pretences— A woman, who gave the name of G. E. BLUNT, age about 35, height 5 ft. 2 in., inclined to be stout, complexion and hair dark ; of good address ; dress, blue serge skirt, black- and- white striped blouse, light brown golf cape, black felt hat, black veil. She represented herself to be the daughter of a clergyman, and engaged apartments at a nursing institute for an invalid cousin. Warrant issued. 6.— W Division.— For obtaining furniture by false pretences— H. D. PHILLIPS, age 45, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion sallow, hair dark, turning grey, large nose ; wore dark clothes, silk hat. He represented that he was a Member of Parliament and a director of the London and South Western Bank. Warrant issued. Information to be forwarded to the Metropolitan Police Office, New Scotland Yard. S. W. CITY OF LONDON. 7— For forgery— WALTER GOULD KEMMISH late of 10, Coleman Street, E. C., and 46, Carlingford Road, Harringay, London, N., age 32, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion sallow, hair, small moustache and whiskers dark brown, has a consumptive appear- ance, stoops slightly; dress, black frock- coat ( silk facings), dark trousers and vest, high silk hat, or short coat and black felt hat. AYRSHIRE. 8.— Ayr ( County).— Portrait and description of ARTHUR STURROCK, a solicitor, and agent of the British Linen Company's Bank, Kilmarnock, whose apprehension is sought for embezzling £ 4,150, age 40, height about 6 ft. 1 in., slight build, complexion fresh, rather long face, hair and moustache light, high cheek- bones, rather prominent nose, front teeth slightly project, walks erect, of military appearance. speaks rather affectedly ; dress ( when last seen), brown tweed jacket suit, black hard felt hat; carried a small black hand- bag ; a native of Kilmarnock. Absconded 23rd October last. Inquiries requested at hotels, shipping offices, etc. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable of Ayrshire, Ayr. CAMBRIDGESHIRE. 9.— Cambridge ( Borough).— For obtaining goods by false pretences— WILLIAM SYERS, age about 42, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion fair, hair ( wore long at back) and heavy moustache brown, eyes grey, small scar bridge of nose and over left eye, very plausible manner; dress ( when last seen), dark grey suit, dark tie, high silk hat, lace boots, brown spate. Ho takes apartments, representing himself as managing director of the Great Britain Coal Company, Highbury, London, and The English and Scottish Estate Association, Highbury, and is about to establish an agency in the neighbourhood; advertises for clerks and lady pupils to learn type- writing and shorthand, from whom he obtains a pre- mium of five guineas. He then takes a house and obtains furniture and provisions by means of the same representations. He was sentenced at Bed- fordshire Quarter Sessions on 16th October, 1895, to 12 months imprisonment for a similar fraud at Luton, and to 2 months for false pretences at Brighton, on 7th January, 1895. Warrant issued. 10.— Cam bridge ( Borough).— Forobtaining money by false pretences— EMMETT HUSSEY, age about 26, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., slight build, complexion pale, thin face, hair and moustache light brown; of gentlemanly appearance, and is well- educated ; dress, blue serge jacket and vest, dark cloth trousers, white silk tie, black hard felt hat, brown boots. He took lodgings on 23rd ult., and left, on 3rd inst., stating that he was going to London to see his employers. During his stay at Cambridge, he has been advertising in the " Bazaar, Exchange, and Mart" and other papers, offering for sale poultry, wearing apparel, guns, jewellery, saddlery, etc., and thus obtained several sums of money, promising to send the articles on approval. CARMARTHENSHIRE. 11.— Llanelly ( County).— For obtaining, 17th ult., food, lodgings and money by false pretences— REES THOMAS ( supposed false), age 31 to 34, height about 5 ft. 10 in., complexion, hair and mous- tache dark, abscess scar below left jaw, of military appearance; dress, black serge coat and vest, light cloth trousers, small light cloth cap, Oxford shoes. Stated he was a native of Briton Ferry, Glamorgan- shire. He states he has obtained employment at local works, takes lodgings, orders groceries, etc., to be sent there, and obtains money under the pretence of fetching his luggage. Warrant issued. CHESHIRE. 12.— Hyde ( County).— For housebreaking, 11th ult.— Licence Holder THOMAS ADAMS, Office No. 2800- 96, age 42, height 5 ft. 4£ in., complexion fresh, hair light brown, eyes blue, scar over right eyebrow, 2 on left cheek, 1 right of forehead, 1 on right thumb, right wrist, and on left forearm, mole on left ribs, outside left forearm, and red mole under left shoulder- blade. Sentenced at Chester Assizes, 16th June, 1894, to 3 years penal servitude for bur- glary. Licenced 14th September, 1896. U253. Information to Capt. Bown, Newmarket pattern " thereon; 1 razor, " Wade and Butcher, Sheffield," thereon-^ TIM GLENNY, a tramping groom, age about 50, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion fresh, hair ( turning grey and bald on top) dark brown, cast in eyes, weak back, and wears belt or stays, shuffling gait, feet recently scalded, in consequence of which his boots are cut in front; dressed in the stolen clothing. DEVONSHIRE. 14.— Devonport ( Borough).— For stealing 1 silver albert, snake pattern, centre forms 2 heads, coins attached; 6 pairs blankets; 7 pairs sheets; 7 coun- terpanes ( 1 white, the others patchwork); 12 bolster and pillow- slips; 1 brown tweed coat and vest; 1 tin trunk; and other articles— CHARLES ARTHUR VINE, age 20, height_ 5 ft. 6 in., complexion pale, full face, hair ( curly) black, good teeth, red mark on forehead; dress, black reefer jacket, stripe trousers, black net neckerchief, black'hard hat. A navvy; native of Sandbach, Cheshire. SARAH WILKIN, alias CONSTABLE, age 35, medium height, com- plexion dark, hair black, 5 upper false teeth; dress, black serge dress, black- figured mantle, long black fur boa, fawn- coloured straw hat, trimmed fawn satin and white feather, carries a white- handle umbrella and a coloured shawl. A native of Northwold, Norfolk. Warrant issued. Information to Head Constable Matters, Devon- port. DURHAM. 15.— South Shields ( Borough).— For stealing a watch ( recovered)— ELIZABETH CARSON, age about 27, height 5 ft., stout build, hair ( frizzed in front) light, has cast in one eye; travels the country hawking brushes. ESSEX. 16.— Grays ( County).— For conspiracy and ob- taining £ 14 10s. 0d., between 9th September and 1st ult.— FREDERICK TYLER, age 34, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion sallow, hair and eyes ( full) dark brown, slight dark moustache. Has been employed as storekeeper on the Industrial School- ship " Shaftes- bury." Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Jordan, Grays. 17.— Southend- on- Sea( Cownty).— For stealing, 2nd inst., a silver hunter lever watch, No. 40185, gold hands, maker's name " T. J. Mercer" on face— WILLIAM CHALMERS, age 38, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion fresh, hair ( bald on top) and heavy moustache dark, eyes brown, walks badly, right ankle bent inwards; dress, dark jacket and vest, cord trousers, grey cap, light boots. A labourer. Has been in the Navy. Supposed a native of Glasgow. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Simmonds, Southend- on- Sea. 18.— Colchester ( Borough).— For stealing, 30th ult., a pony and cart ( recovered)— CHARLES ALFRED HARRISON, age 19, height 5 ft. 4f in., complexion fresh, hair auburn, eyes brown, nose turned slightly to one side; dress, light grey check suit, light cloth cap. Native of Great Baddow, near Chelmsford. Warrant issued. Information to Head Constable Coombs, Colches- ter. HAMPSHIRE. 19.— Portsmouth ( Borough).— For burglary, 18th ult. — WILLIAM HENRY MURDEN, alias FRANK CLEMENTS, age 21, height 5 ft. 9 in., slight build, complexion pale, thin features, hair and eyes brown, clean- shaved, very irregular teeth, very prominent larynx, walks erect, sings, and plays the piano ; dress, black morning coat, blue serge vest and trousers, black bow, nearly new shoes. He takes apartments, com- mits a larceny, and breaks out before the occupants are up. Friends reside at Nottingham. Supposed previously convicted and to be wanted elsewhere. Information to the Chief Constable, Town Hall, Portsmouth. 20.— Southampton ( Borough).— For stealing a bicycle— DR. GOATER McDONALD, alias H. C. GOATER and COATER, age about 30, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., hair and moustache dark, drops left side of lower lip when talking, speaks with American accent; dress, double- breasted frock- coat, dark grey trousers, silk hat. Had in his pos- session a Norfolk suit ( knickerbockers, with box- cloth knees). Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Southampton. ISLE OF ELY. 21.— Chatteris ( County).— For stealing, 1st inst., a dark blue cloth suit and gold albert chain— JOHN GRANT, age about 25, height 5 ft. 2 or 3 in., complexion fair, thick lips, may have slight light moustache, star or dot back of left hand ; dress, light jacket, dark trousers, with holes above knee, cloth cap, heavy lace boots, or may be wearing the stolen suit. Stated he had been a sailor, and was a native of Walthamstow. Warrant issued. Information to Inspector Bunn, Chatteris. KENT. 22.— Cranbrook ( County).— Forstealinga bicycle ( recovered)— HENRY HINKLEY, alias HARRY FRANKLIN, age 29, height 5 ft. 9 in., slight build, complexion pale, hair and moustache dark brown, eyes blue, slightly round- shouldered; is very talka- tive; dress, blue serge suit, green- and- black bow- tie, soft black felt hat, lace boots. Native of Cranbrook. Is likely to be found at a coffee tavern. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Fowle, Cranbrook. 23.— Sandgate ( County).— For deserting his wife and 5 children, leaving them chargeable to the Romney Marsh Union— CHARLES PAIN, age 37, height 5 ft. 10J in., complexion, hair and moustache dark, eyes hazel, bracelet right wrist, blister mark one leg, bullet mark above right knee, cut on head, mole under one arm, ears stand out; dress, brown overcoat, jacket and vest, old fustian trousers, white neck wrap. Native of Dymchurch. Warrant issued. Information to Superintendent Waghorn, Sandgate. 24.— Margate ( Borough).— For embezzlement— GEORGE PURVIS BECK, alias BAKER, a journey- man baker, age about 23, height about 6 ft., slight build, complexion fresh, hair, very slight moustache and eyes light, 4 upper front teeth deficient, flat- footed ; dress, dark blue reefer jacket and vest, grey trousers, grey covert coat and cap. Supposed a native of Canterbury; associates with betting- men. Absconded 21st ult.- Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Farndale, Margate. LANCASHIRE. 25.— Accrington ( Borough). — For stealing £ 4 10s. 0d„ on 7th ult.— HENRY HARRISON, age 18 or 19, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in.; complexion pale, hair dark brown, eyes blue, short neck, cut scar on forehead; dress, black jacket and vest, brown trousers, navy blue cap, turn- down collar, dark tie with spots, low shoes. Lately employed in a.: restaurant. Information to Chief ConstableBeattie, Accrington. LINCOLNSHIRE. 26.— Grimsby ( Borough).— For stealing 1 gentle- man's silver lever watch, " Arthur Ncwstead, Manches- ter," engraved inside outer case— A MAN, age 30 to 35, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., complexion fair, hair brown, moustache rather sandy, wore eye- glasses; dress, brown double- breasted overcoat, shabby grey suit, soft brown felt hat, carried a gold- mounted umbrella. Speaks with German accent. He engages two bed- rooms at a principal hotel, one for himself and one for his father, whom he states will arrive later with luggage, and, having gained access, he steals from the adjoining rooms. 27.— Grimsby ( Borough).— For obtaining goods by false pretences— WILLIAM HENRY STANLEY,. alias WILLIAM H. SMITH, age about 32, height" 5 ft. 6 in., complexion sallow, haii dark brown, small side whiskers and heavy moustache brown, eyes brown or grey, very bad upper teeth ; has a very plausible manner ; dress ( when last seen), brown sac chesterfield overcoat, brown or drab check trousers, brown boots, silk hat. Wore gold eyeglasses. Late an assistant superintendent of the Pearl Assurance Company. Supposed well known at York, Hull and Leeds. Had in his possession a brown cowhide portmanteau, brown seal morocco writing- case, plain saddler's leather dressing- case with ivory fittings, brown seal morocco cigar- case, and a cheque book on the Stamford, Spalding and Boston Bank, Grimsby Branch. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Pickersgill, Grimsby. MONMOUTHSHIRE. 28.— Tredegar ( County).— For stealing a silver patent lever watch, No. 36947, " Kay Jones" on dial, silver curb pattern chain, small links, attached; 1 black- ribbed vest ( nearly new); 1 pair dark tweed trousers, with red stripe forming a square, and a fancy silk muffler, marked " W. D." in corner— WILLIAM TREWEN, age 35 to 40, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., complexion fresh, hair light brown, eyes brown, Roman nose; dress, dark overcoat, light trousers with dark stripe, black cap, lace boots and ( sunnosed) serge jacket and the stolen vest. A. pattern, " Bamboo Cycle Com- pany, Wolverhampton," transfer on head and seat- tube ( nearly new), no brake or mud- guard; a pneu- matic " Coventry Cross " bicycle, " Welch- Dunlop" front tyre, " Standard" back tyre, cork handles, rubber pedals, no brake or mud- guard, black enamel chipped in places, " Coventry Cross " in large letters on seat- tube, badge of the makers " Warman and Hazlewood, Coventry," on head, No. 13 or 15 over badge— TWO MEN. 1st, age about 20, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion and hair dark; dress, dark suit, soft black felt hat. 2nd, age about 23, height 5 ft. 5 in. SUSSEX ( EAST). 30.— Uckfleld ( County).— For embezzlement— GEORGE REEVES, age about 35, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion, hair, moustache and eyes dark, one finger crooked; dress, old grey suit, grey cloth peak cap. Information to Chief Constable Baker, Hastings. . 33.-— Hove( Town).— Forembezzlement— GEORGE CHURCHILL, late of Brighton, ago 44, height 5 ft. 10 in., stout build, complexion fresh, hair dark brown, heavy dark moustache, eyes brown, has tender feet.; dress, black morning coat and vest, dark trousers, black hard felt hat. A painter ; formerly a butler. May bo found working at corn wharves. Was sentenced to 12 months imprisonment for lar- ceny, at Lewes Quarter Sessions, on 18th October, 1887. Warrant issued. 34.— Hove ( Town).— For embezzlement— J AMES HARMAN, late of Brighton, age 28 ti 30, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., slight build, complexion florid, hair light brown, clean- shaved, addicted to drink ; dres3, light- coloured coat, cord trousers, lace boots. A groom and labourer; has been recently employed travelling' with an entire horse. Warrant issued. 35.— Hove ( Town).— For embezzlement— WIL- LIAM HENRY POPE, age 33 to 35, height about 5 ft. 7 in., complexion fresh, hair light brown, mous- tache light, eyes blue; dress, dark suit, black hard felt hat. GRIFFITH, Aged 18 years, height 6 ft. 2 in., complexion fresh, hair light, eyes grey, is short- sighted and always wears specta- cles. Dressed, when last seen, in a light Norfolk jacket, dark blue trousers, light cloth cap, black cycling shoes, a black silk scarf and white muffler round his neck.
