L All announcements for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communications upon them, should be addressed to THE EDITOR OF THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YARD, LONDON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought wiU be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 3. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all causes where a reward is offered the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions be clearly slated. • 5. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is nought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property, will be prominently inserted, with detailed particulars, at a cost of 15s. per portrait, and of" s. 6d. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, including the expense of engraving on wood. 6. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officerofnot less rant than Superintendent; and, if the name of such person be required to be inserted, and no warrant it in torce against, him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property mu* t be guaranteed by an officerofnot less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. A nnouncements ofaV persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and are alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. Theforcewhich rauset particulars concerning delinq< ient* or sto'en property to be inserted, in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehenn- on or recovery, at once transmit to the. Editor no< tce of the fact, referring to the number oj the announcement for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases, the officer signing the request for insertion of any announcement, will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday mornina. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only, be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, eith'r at the office. SPECIAL NOTICE. An inventor has patented a composition for taking casts of footprints in any soft ground, and Government has acquired the right to use this invention in any part of the United Kingdom. It is anticipated that it will prove of value occasionally in criminal cases, especially in rural districts, and any Police Force that wishes to have particulars of it is invited to apply to the Home Office confidentially for that purpose. A com- positor. Native of London. Is believed to be at either Dover or Folkestone. Sentenced at North London Sessions, 4th June, 1894, to 3 years penal servitude for obtaining money by false pretences. Licenced 2nd September, 1896. W 281. Warrant issued. 2.— A Division.— Woodcut portrait and descrip- tion of FREDERICK WILLIAM JONES, whose apprehension is sought for embezzlement, age 45, height 5 ft. b or 7 in, stout build, complexion swarthy, hair ( slightly bald) and small moustache black, eyes ( prominent) dark brown, slightly bow- legged, hands very small and white; dress, black overcoat, dark trousers, black felt hat. Lately employed as collector by the Gas Light and Coke Co., Limited. Native of Finsbury, London. Warrant issued. 3.— N Division.— For stealing £ 8 16s. 3d., on 6th ult.— HENRY BEAMES, age 30, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion, hair, whiskers and moustache dark ; dress ( usually), dark jacket suit, hard felt hat. CAMBRIDGESHIRE. 5.— Cambridge ( County).— For stealing wear- ing apparel from their lodgings— Two women, giving the name of LAWRENCE. 1st, age about 64, short, rather stout, complexion fair, hair grey, eyes brown ( cast in left); dress, black dress ( with yellow stripes), blue cloak ( with stripe), black bonnet. 2nd, age about 28, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 in., complexion fair, hair light brown, full dark eyes; dressed in black. CUMBERLAND. 6.— Cockermouth ( County).— For cattle- steal- ing— JOHN WILLIAM ELLIS, alias McALLISTER, age 21, height 5 ft. 11 in., slight build, square shoul- ders, complexion sallow, hair light brown, slight dark moustache, eyes grey, of smart appearance; dress, dark brown jacket suit, black hard hat, stand- up collar, light brown boots. A groom and boots; native of Cockermouth. May endeavour to join an Association football team, or to leave for South Africa. Absconded 2nd inst. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. DENBIGHSHIRE. 7.— Wrexham ( County).— Concerned with 2 men in custodv, for stealing wearing apparel, 3rd inst., at Llangollen— JOHN THOMAS, alias JACK BRYMBO, age 26, height 5 ft. 5i in., complexion fair, hair dark brown, eyes grey, lost front tooth upper jaw left side. DEVONSHIRE. 8.— Exeter ( County).— For non- paymentof £ 2 3s., fine and costs for travelling on the Great Western Railway without paying his fare— FREDERICK CHARLES HEARD, age 46, height 5 ft. 5i in., com- plexion fresh, hair ( turning grey), whiskers and mous- tache dark, eyes brown, addicted to drink ; of very plausible manner; dress, dark overcoat with velvet collar, dark suit, brown hat, lace boots. Native of Totnes, where he was formerly a cab proprietor. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable of Devon, Exeter. 9. Torquay ( County).— Foi neglecting to main- tain her children, leaving them chargeable to the Totnes Union— MARY ELIZABETHZ BARHAM, age 30, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., complexion and hair dark. Native of Brixham. She was travelling a short time since with Anderson and Haslem's Circus, selling refreshments, etc. May take the name of WAITE. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Roberts, Torquay. DURHAM. 10.— Gateshead ( Borough).— Portrait and des- cription of JOHN SCOTT, whose apprehension is sought for stealing £ 135, age 28, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion fresh, slight light moustache, long nose, large nostrils. Speaks North country dialect.' 1 A publican's manager. Dress ( when last seen), brown overcoat with velvet collar, dark jacket and vest, light plaid trousers, light cap. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Trotter, Gateshead. 11.— South Shields ( Borough).— For larceny— W. HORNSBY, age about 40, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fresh, hair light brown, moustache light, high cheek- bones, leans his head on one side, and has a peculiar twist in the face when speaking, usually well dressed ; an insurance agent. Information to Chief Constable Morant, South Shields. boots, and 1 pair Wellington dress boots— WILLIAM WHITWELL, age 23, height 5 ft. 10 in., complexion fair, hair dark brown, slight moustache sandy, eyes grey, upper front teeth large and irregular, short upper lip, scars on head and left little finger; dress, black overcoat with check lining, mixed tweed lounge suit, brown- and- white check tweed cap, brown lace boqts ( part of the stolen property). A deserter from the King's Dragoon Guards. Warrant issued. Information to Head Constable Coombs, Colches- ter. GLAMORGANSHIRE. 16.— Cardiff ( Borough).— Forstealinga£ 5 Bank of England note and £ 4 gold— CHARLES STEWART, age 20, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion pale, hair and moustache light; wearing long dark overcoat with as- trachan collar and cuffs, brown Tam- o'- Shanter cap. A ship's steward. Information to Head Constable McKenzie, Cardiff. ESSEX. 12.— Saffron Waiden ( County).— On commit- ment warrant having been sentenced to 2 months imprisonment for aggravated assault— CHARLES THOMAS PERRY, age 36, height about 5 ft. 4 in., rather stout build, complexion, hair, very heavy moustache and eyes dark, round face. A carpenter; native of Saffron Walden. 13.— Saffron Walden ( County).— For neglecting to maintain his family— JOHN PERRY, age 51, height about 5 ft. 8 in., complexion fresh, hair and eyes dark brown, heavy dark moustache, large red Roman nose. Was formerly employed as a carman on the Great Eastern Railway. Warrant issued. 14.— Saffron Walden ( County).— For non- pay ment of fine and costs for game trespass— FRED FITCH, age 18, height 5 ft., complexion fair, hair dark, rather large eyes, good teeth; generally wears corduroy trousers and leather leggings. A labourer - native of Saffron Walden. Commitment warrant issued. Information to Supt. Pryke, Saffron Walden. 15.— Colchester ( Borough).— For stealing, 13th inst, a black cheviot overcoat; 1 pair brown lace boots; 1 pair blue serge trousers; 2 tweed suits 1 cavalry officer's frock- ooat; 1 stable jacket; . forage cap; 1 pair knee boots; 1 pair Wellington HAMPSHIRE. 17.— Aldershot ( County).— For stealing ( bailee) £ 10, on 6th inst.— ALBERT F. CARTER, age 29, height 5 ft. 5Jr in., complexion fresh, hair black, heavy moustache dark, eyes blue, large scat- centre of forehead, left wrist and thumb; dress ( when last seen), black suit, black hard felt hat, lace boots. An Army Reservist. Has served in the Medical Staff Corps, from which he was discharged about 2 years ago. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Miller, Aldershot. 18.— Gosport ( County).— For neglecting to main- tain his wife and family, leaving them chargeable to the Alverstoke Union— WILLIAM MALLEY, age 43, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes grey, bracelet tattooed on wrists; dress ( when last seen), long grey coat, check trousers, brown cap. A rag sorter ; native of Gosport. Warrant issued. 19.— Gosport ( County).— For larceny, 4th inst.— FRANK BURKE, age 22, height 5 ft. in., com- plexion fresh, hair light brown, eyes brown, scar on on head ; wearing drab overcoat and blue serge cap. A Lance- Corporal of the King's Royal Rifle Corps, and may be wearing uniform trousers. Native of Rugby. Information to Supt. Silver, Gosport. 20.— Winchester ( County).— For larceny, 28th ult., at Worthy— CLARENCE RANNER, age 26 to 30, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 in., complexion fair, hair brown, eyes blue ( have a peculiar appearance), bad teeth, large crack almost to bone on knuckle right little finger; fond of athletic sports, is a good runner; dress, black jacket and vest, tweed breeches ( hole in strapping of right knee), box- cloth gaiters; may be wearing light trou- sers. A racing stableman; native of Ashley, near Newmarket. Warrant issued. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Sillence, Winchester. 21.— Southampton ( Borough).— For obtaining money by false pretences— F. HUDSON, age 45 to 50, height about 5 ft. 7 in., hair ( bald on top) light. He advertises jars of honey for sale, obtains payment in advance, but does not supply the goods. Warrant issued. 22.— Southampton ( Borough).— For forgery— HARRY C. HAYNES, age about 38, height 5 ft. 10 or 11 in., long features, rather large nose, good teeth, wears glasses, speaks in a soft persuasive manner; wore heavy rough brown coat, brown boots. Has been employed as a canvasser. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Southampton. HEREFORDSHIRE. 23.— Ross ( County).— For stealing ( bailee) a silver lever watch— THOMAS WILLIAM TAYLOR, age 50, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion fair, hair light sandy, long beard sandy ( turning grey); dress, long dark overcoat, dark trousers, black hat. A travelling watch and clock cleaner. Carries a small black bag, containing tools. Stays at common lodging- houses Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Cope, Ross. HERTFORDSHIRE. 24.— Watford ( County).— For false pretences LILLY HAMILTON, alias MRS. PENNY, age about 40, height 5 ft. 4 or Q in., stout build, complexion pale, hair turning grey, two or three front teeth defi cient; dress, black cloth costume, bound with velvet black fur collarette, black hat trimmed black and white ribbon. Information to Captain Wymer, Deputy Chief Constable, Ware. 25.— St. Albans ( City).— For larceny ( bailee) 15th September last— JANE FLINT, alias SHAW and JACKSON, age 68, height 5 ft. 1 in., stout build, complexion fresh, hair grey, eyes ( cast in left) brown, rather round- shouldered ; dress, black cape, trimmed crepe, black frock and bonnet trimmed 2 jet orna- ments and black satin strings. Accompanied by ANNIE SHAW, alias JACKSON, age 30, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion pale, hair and eyes ( full) brown; dress, black dress, cape lined black and white plaid, black hat, satin lining. They were sentenced, at Leek, Staffordshire, on 5th March last, to 3 months imprisonment, for larceny. Travel as mother and daughter, and left St. Albans on 1st ult. ( See Case No. 26.) Warrant issued. Information to Head Constable Blatch, St. Albans. ISLE OF ELY. 26.— Ely ( County).— For stealing, 2nd inst., at. Littleport, £ 3 2s. 0d., also at Streatham Ferry, 2 white calico nightdresses, machine sewn, embroidery in neck and sleeves; 5 foreign and colonial coins ( in- cluding 2 Egyptian, 1 Indian, and 1 Australian), and £ 1 0s. 0d.— TWO WTOMEN. 1st, age about 64, rather short and stout, has a defect in left eye, and walks lame, wearing dark dress and cloak. 2nd, age about 26, rather tall, complexion pale, full dark eyes, wear- ing dark clothes, carries a bag. They represent themselves as mother and daughter, and take lodgings in quiet places, and, after committing a larceny, de- camp^ ^ Supposed to have gone in the direction of Lynn. Are believed to be identical with women," see Case No. 25. Information to Supt. Burrows, Ely. KENT. £ 2 REWARD 27.— Sittingbourne ( Countv).— Portrait and de- scription of WILLIAM GOODFELLOW VEITCH, whose apprehension is sought for deserting his chil- dren on 15th ult., age 41, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., stout build, complexiort fair, very light brown hair ( thin on top), moustache light, eyes bluish grey, scar bridge of nose, a piece of a front tooth in left side upper jaw broken off, very small mole under left eye, short neck; usually wears light tweed suit. A brewers' assistant. Warrant issued. The above reward will be paid by the Guardians of the Faversham Union for the apprehension of Veitch. Information to Inspector Highwood, Faversham. 28.— Canterbury ( City).— For stealing, 12th inst.,. 1 gentleman's gold lever watch, maker " Carter," No. 1884 ; 1 small gold keyless watch, gold face; and £ 3- — A MAN, age 27 to 30, height about 5 ft. 8 in., com- plexion fresh, hair light; dress, dark tweed suit,, brown alpine hat. Represented himself to be the son of a clergyman. 29-— Canterbury ( City). — For stealing, 4th inst. — 1 set of Jubilee coins ; 1 lady's silver lever Waltham watch, No. 12224; 1 bright plain gold bracelet, with small gold chain attached; 6 or 7 silver bangles, 1 with 3 small silver pig charms attached ; 1 steel chain- purse, containing £ 4; 1 housekeeper's purse, con- taining somo bills and 30s.; 1 old fashioned gold ring, with hair under glass in centre, surrounded with FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 20, 1896. T H E POLICE GAZETTE. 3 pearls; 1 gold bucklo- banded ring1, with hair under- neath ; 1 gold locket, opens both sides, toothed edge; 1 lady's fine gold chain, link pattern; 1 old- fashioned gold brooch, oblong shape, fluted, and £ 16 gold— FLORENCE HERBERT, age 28, height 5 ft., complexion florid ( blotchy), hair and « yes dark, prominent, features, one or two teeth broken in front; dress, short plain cloth • cape, with straps across front, fastened by 2 large black and white horn buttons, black silk blouse trimmed black and white lace, black serge dress, black felt boat- shape hat trimmed 2 white quills. Had • with her a new brown leather portmanteau and a parcel, labelled " M. A. Grey." A domestic servant. Warrant issued. McKENNA, age 48, height 5 ft. 3? in., complexion dark, thin face, hair and heavy moustache dark; dress, brown overcoat, brown mix- ture tweed trousers, blue tie with white spots, brown • cap. A journeyman tailor; supposed native of Man- chester, where he has friends. May be found at military tailors' shops. Warrant issued. 31.-— Dover ( Borough).— For deserting his wife and family, leaving them chargeable to the Dover " dnion— WILLIAM PATRICK ALLEN, age 33, height about 5 ft. 8 in., stout build, complexion dark, hair and moustache dark, " W. P. A." and star tattooed left forearm, wearing blue guernsey and peak cap. Native of Dover. Has been employed as a diver at harbour works. Warrant issued. 32.-— Dover ( Borough).— For deserting his wife And family, leaving them chargeable to the Dover Union — FREDERICK HARRIS, age 48, height about 5 ft. 4 in., complexion fair, hair light brown, sandy mous- tache; dress, dark check suit, black overcoat with velvet collar, hard felt hat. A labourer; supposed native of Bristol. Warrant issued. Information to Head Constable Sanders, Dover. trousers, navy blue cap, turn- down collar, dark tie with spots, low shoes. Lately employed in a restaurant.' Information to Chief Constable Beattie, Accrington. 37.— Bootle ( Borough).— For using a place for the purposeof betting- ANDREW WILLIAMSON, alias HUNTER and SCOTTIE, age 40, height 6 ft, com- plexion fresh, full face, hair ( cut short) grey, slight moustache, eyes blue, well- built, walks erect, speaks with Scotch accent; dress ( generally), light tweed suit and cap. Native of Girvan, N. B. Has served in the Army and Police. Absconded 3rd inst., when he had a phonograph in his possession, with which he may endeavour to obtain a livelihood. Warrant issued. NOTTINGHAMSHIRE. 42.— Nottingham ( County).— For stealing a cash- box containing £ 21— HARRY EDWARDS, age about 25, height 5 ft. 1 or 2 in., complexion fresh, hair and moustache dark brown, eyes blue, small scar over left eye, 2 rings tattooed on one left finger; dress, grey jacket, dark vest, dark trousers with brown stripe, light cap, strong lace boots Has served in the Navy and on fishing- smacks at Hull and Grimsby. Recently employed at a travelling show ; supposed native of Hull. Information to Supt. Harrop, Nottingham. 43.— Newark ( Borough).— Portrait and descrip- tion of JAMES CHARLES HART, whose appre- hension is sought for embezzlement, age about 33, height about 5 ft. 1 in., complexion pale, hair and OXFORDSHIRE. 44.— Oxford ( County).— For deserting his wife and family, leaving thom chargeable to the Heading- ton Union— FRANK WEST, age about 26, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., complexion fresh, hair and side whiskers light brown. A groom ; native of Cuddes- don, Oxon. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable of Oxfordshire, Oxford. NORFOLK. ' 41.— Holt ( Gounty).— For stealing a bay mare ( recovered)— GEORGE WOODHOUSE, late of Bessingham, Norfolk, age 20, height 5 ft. 6 in., com- plexion fresh, hair light brown, eyes brown, nose has been broken; dress, pepper- and- salt tweed jacket, light breeches, light box cloth gaiters, light cap, lace boots. Has served in the army. A groom. Warrant issued. Information to Inspector Willmott, Holt. SOMERSETSHIRE. 47.— Frome ( Couvty).— For obtaining a pony by false pretences, on 28th ult.— A man who gave the name of CHARLES KITLEY, age 45, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., rather stout build, complexion fresh, hair ( cut short) grey, clean- shaved, top of one ear ( supposed right) is either very thin or part missing; wore slate- coloured suit, raised seams, tight- fitting trousers, laca boots. Appearance of a dealer. Stated ho wa « a farmer, and resided at Trowbridge. He was allowed to take the pony for a week on trial, but resold it the LANCASHIRE. 33.— Church ( County).— For assaulting police on 2nd ult.— JOHN WANT, age 31, height 5 ft. 8| in., - complexion pale, hair brown, eyes blue, blind right © ye. A labourer; native of Burnley. WILLIAM UTTLEY, age 34, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion fresh, hair dark, eyes blue, cut scar over right eye. A boiler- maker ; native of Burnley. Warrant issued. Campbell, Church. 34.— Liverpool ( City).— Portrait and description of DAVID'^ EDWIN DAYIS, a Jew, whose appre- hension is sought for embezzlement, age 28, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 in., complexion sallow, hair, moustache LEICESTERSHIRE. face, stout build, " J " on right forearm, blue dot between left thumb and finger, and scar right of fore- head ; dressed in new blue overcoat, dark tweed suit, black felt hat, and patent leather shoes, carried a crooked- handle walking- stick.
