All announcements for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communications upon them, should be addressed to THE EDITOR OF THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YARD, LONDON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 3. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions be clearly stated. 5. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of • stolen property, will be prominently inserted, with detailed particulars, at a cost of 15s. per portrait, and of Is. 6d. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, including the expense of engraving on wood. 6. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officerof not cess rankthan Superintendent; and, if the name of such person be required to be inserted, and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Announcements ofaV persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and art alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. Theforcewhich causes particulars concerning delinquents or sto'en pronerty to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases, the officer signing the request for insertion of any announcement, will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only, be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office. SPECIAL JMOTICE. FUGITIVE OFFENDERS. A case has come under the notice of the Editor, • in which a person whose apprehension was sought in England, and who was described in the POLICE - GAZETTE, gave himself up to the Colonial Police. The prosecutor declined to take any further action • in the matter, but the case necessitated the dispatch • of two telegrams, the cost of which had to be refunded by him. To avoid such expense, the Editor requests that if there is reason to believe that a fugitive offender is likely to go to the Colonies, and the prosecutor is unwilling to incur any expense with a view to • obtain his surrender, a notification be made in the • communication sent to this Office to the effect that • the offender is not to be arrested beyond the United Kingdom. The necessity for the adoption of such a course - will be apparent from the fact that the POLICH • GAZETTE is circulated in the Colonies. APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT. METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT. 1.— C. A native of Caversham, Bucks. Late a colour- sergeant in the 1st Shropshire Light Infantry. ABERDEENSHIRE. 8.— Aberdeen ( County).— For fraud— ALEX- ANDER ANDERSON, of 15, Littlejohn Street, Huntley, alias JAMES WYND, of Nether Kirkgate, Aberdeen, and HERE GASTEL, of 15, Montague Street, Edinburgh, age about 27, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., stout build, complexion, hair, moustache and eyes dark, full face ; dress ( when last seen), blue serge jacket suit, dark tweed overcoat, dark cap. Supposed to be a German, but speaks English well. He advertises for rare postage and fiscal stamps, or replies to advertisers wishing to dispose of such, giving a postal address at a common lodging- house or small shop, and on receipt of letters disposes of their contents and absconds. AYRSHIRE. 9.— Ayr ( County).— Portrait and description of DAVID JOHNSTON, alias DAVID JAMES GLEN- DINNING, whose apprehension is sought for steal- ing 5 watches ( recovered), and 1 gentleman's gold geneva watch, No. 66288; 1 gentleman's silver lever, silver dial. Absconded from Cumnock on 12th ult. He posted a letter at Carlisle on evening of 17th ult., addressed to his late employer, enclosing pawn- tickets of some of the stolen watches, and stating that he was going to America. He was sentenced to 60 days imprisonment for theft on 25th September, 1888, to 4 months on 21st January, 1891, and to 1 month on 25th August, 1891, all at Wigtown, and in name of DAVID JAMES GLENDINNING. Warrant issued. 10.— Ayr ( County).— Portrait and description of JAMES BELL, alias CAMPBELL, BROWN and HAY, whose apprehension is sought for horse- stealing on 22nd ult., age 22, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion fresh, hair black, slight moustache dark, eyes grey, scrofula cicatrices both sides of neck and under chin, burn scar on forehead, marks of old injuries on first and fourth left fingers, slouching gait; dress, old brown jacket, black corded vest, dark tweed trousers, faded red tartan scarf, dark peak cap, lace boots. Is wanted at Kinning Park, Renfrewshire, and Larne, Antrim, for similar offences. Has been convicted of theft at Glasgow, Paisley and Govan, Scotch Criminal Register,' 67/ 1895. Warrant issued. BERKSHIRE. 11.— Reading ( Borough).— For larceny, 23rd ult.— A man who gave the name of FRED BAR- RETT, age 35 to 40, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., slight build, complexion sallow, hair ( turning grey) and moustache dark brown, eyes grey ( cast in right), tattooed on back of one " hand ; dress, short dark jacket and vest, of rough material, grey trousers, light cap, had with him a plaid Inverness waterproof coat. He took lodgings, stating lie was an inspector on Great Western Railway, and had been ordered for night work, and, after obtaining food, a hat, and basket, he kit, saying he should be back in the morning. He . also went to a second house, and obtained food and an old brown overcoat by similar means, giving the naxr. e of George Barrett. Warrant is sued. Information to Head Constable Tcwsley, Reading. BRECONSHIRE* 12.— Crickhowell ( County).— For stealing 1 glazier's diamond, marked " Sharrat and Newth " on ferrule; 1 looking- glass; 1 hair- brush and. comb; 15J dozen caps, various sizes and colours; 2 Welsh flannel shawls, light brown colour, with brown stripe forming a square about 2 in.— DAVID LEVIN, a Jew, age 23, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 in., complexion, hair and slight moustache dark, cast in left eye, cut mark over left eyebrow, supposed scald marks on chest; dress, dark jacket and vest, grey cloth trousers with dark brown stripe, black bowler hat, light lace boots. A hawker. Warrant issued. 13.—- Crickhowell ( County).— For absconding from Hay Workhouse, and stealing clothing, the property of the Guardians— WILLIAM DAVIES, age 23, height 5 ft. 1 or 2 in., complexion swarthy, hair dark, lost left leg; dress, blue cloth jacket, plaid vest, cord trousers, grey cloth cap, strong nailed boots. CARNARVONSHIRE. 14.— Conway ( County).— For falsifying accounts — JOHN DAVID DAVIES, rate collector, age 45, height 5 ft. 4\ in., complexion pale, hair ( bald on top) and moustache grey, rather weak and watery eyes; dress, when last seen, grey tweed suit and cap, carried a small black handbag. Native of Penmaen- mawr. May endeavour to leave the country. Warrant issued. Not to be apprehended out of the United King- dom. Information to Supt. Rowlands, Conway. CHESHIRE. 15.— Oakmere ( County). — For larceny, 4th inst. — A man, who gave the name of JAMES HORNE, age about 40, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., stout build, com- plexion fresh, hair light brown, clean- shaved, eyes ( sunken) dark; dress, light dust- coat, light grey coc. t, brown plaid trousers, black hard felt hat, lace boots, blue tie with white spots, and a silver horse- shoe pin. " ititt DORSETSHIRE. 16.— Dorchester County). — For embezzling £ 261, on 8th inst.— GEORGE ASH, age 45, height 5 ft. 6 in., stout build, complexion fair, hair ( cut short) brown ( turning grey), supposed tattooed brace- let on one or both wrists; dress, dark blue navy cloth or serge suit, dark or black soft felt hat, or may be wearing a brown suit. A pensioned Staff- Sergeant of the Plymouth Division Royal Marines. Recently employed as senior writer at the Pay Office, Portland, Breakwater. Has been a timekeeper at the Great Western Docks, Plymouth. Native of Stonehouse, Devon. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Devenish, Dorchester. 17.— Wimborne ( County).— On a warrant for burglary, at Versvood Railway Station, 23rd, and at Alderholt, 24th ult., and stealing £ 2 7s. 6d.— Licence Holder THOMAS HOOPER, alias CHRIS- TOPHER HUNT, THOMAS HUNT, THOMAS SMITH and THOMAS CUTLER, Office, No. 2879- 96. age 50, height 5 ft. 5 in., oomplexion fair, hair and moustache sandy, eyes blue, scar over left eye, and on left shin, " D." on left side. Traced to Basingstoke and Farnham, Hants, 1st inst.; then dressed in brown tweed jacket, dark cord vest and trousers ( all new), and blue cap, with dark stripes. Well known to the Hants Constabulary. Sentenced at Win- chester Assizes, 27th July, 1889, to 7 years penal servitude, for burglary. Liberated, on 2nd licence, 19th September, 1896. y F P 803. A butcher's apprentice. Supposed accompanied by his brother Edward, age about 19, height about 5 ft. 6 in., slight build, complexion fair; dress, dark jacket suit, black hard felt hat. Cardiff ( Borough).— For obtaining food and lodging3 by false pretences— A man who gave the name of GEORGE BARRET, age about 40, height 5 ft. 9 in., slight build, complexion, hair, and beard ( about three weeks' growth) dark, ring tattooed on finger, crown back of hand; stated he was a checker on Great Western Railway; and obtained money on. the pretence that there was a sale of unclaimed property, and that, being a servant of the company, he could buy cheaply. TAAFFE, age 24, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion fair, thin face, hair dark brown, slight moustache light, round- shouldered, 2 boil marks right side of neck. A che- mist's assistant. HAMPSHIRE. 23.— Southampton ( Borough).— For stealing, 10th ult., a cash- box and £ 96— WALTER HENRY BATTEN, age 25, height 5 ft. 10 in., complexion ; fresh, hair brown, slight moustache, eyes hazel, 5 dots tattooed right arm, one on back of left arm, walks- erect ; dress, black diagonal naming coat, brown tweed trousers, bound with braid at bottoms, black hard hat. A labourer; may seek employment at docks, or endeavour to leave the country. He has. served in the Royal Marine Artillery, and will account for possession of money by stating it is deferred pay. Is a tramping labourer. Stated he was a native of Little Hereford. Is supposed to have gone to South Wales. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Lewis, Bromyard. 25.— Ledbury ( County).— For larceny ( bailee), 10th August — MARY ANN SCOTT, alias-, MRS. BROWN, age 63, height 5 ft. 2 in.,, complexion pale, hair brown, turning grey, eyes grey stoops when walking; dress, black silk cape, black skirt and hat, heavy boots. A hawker of lace, etc., which she carries in a square pasteboard box. Has in her possession a pedlar's certificate, No. 9, granted at Ledbury, October 31st, 1895, which she may endea-- vour to renew. Native of Nottingham. Is accom- panied by her husband, age 60, height 5 ft. 6 in., clean shaved, parts his hair at back; dress, grey suit and cap. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Has served in the Army. Sometimes works as an engineer's labourer, and is now supposed to be employed at eome docks near Manchester. Native of Hitchin. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Rowe, cycle agent, Station Road, March," tangent spokes, low drop handle- bar, lamp bracket, plated pump, india- rubber clips, no step— A MAN, age 30 to 32, height about 5 ft. 5 in., complexion, hair, and heavy mous- tache dark, of gentlemanly appearance; dress, dark suit, hard hat. KENT. £ 1 REWARD. 32.-— Canterbury ( City).— For deserting her child, leaving it chargeable to the Canterbury Union— ALICE CAROLINE ANSLOW, age 21, height 5 ft. 1 in., complexion fresh, hair black, eyes hazel. Warrant issued. The above reward will be paid by the Canterbury Board of Guardians for such information as will lead to the arrest of ANSLOW. LANCASHIRE. 34.— Kirkham County).— For obtaining food and lodging by false pretences, at Lytham, on 10th inst.— A MAN, age 24 to 28, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., com- plexion fresh, rather long features, hair ( supposed) - sandy; dress, dark rough sorgo suit, black hard felt hat, old lace boots. Had in hia possession a silver watch in composition case, with a gold chain, 4 links, a silver medal, gold centre, a jockey's cap, and a coffee mill ( imitation gold), attached. Stated he was a checker in the employ of tho Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway Company. Left behind an or- dinary dinner- basket, containing 2 saucers, and a knife and fork ( supposed stolen). Information to the Chief Constable, Town Hall, Salford. 36.— Warrington ( Borough).— Portrait and des- cription of JOHN TOOMBS REDHEAD, whose ap- prehension is sought for embezzling £ 2 Is. 5d., on 21st August last, age about 45, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 in., rather stout build, complexion sallow, hair ( bald on top) dark brown, moustache dark ( until recently wore a beard). Of good address. He was employed as Superintendent of Agencies for the London, Edin- burgh and Glasgow Assurance Company, Limited. Supposed to be accompanied by A WOMAN, age about 36, short, hair dark ; a native of Hertford, but until lately resided at Haslingden, near Rawtenstall. Has with her a baby, about 8 months old.
