All announcements for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and ail communications upon them, should fie addressed to THE EDITOR OF IJIE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YARD, LOMDON, S. W. 1. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 3. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In aU cases where a reward is offered the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions be clearly stated. 5. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property, will be prominently inserted, with detailed particulars, at a cost of 15s. per portrait, and of 7s. 6d. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, including the expense of engraving on wood. 6. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the. signature of an officefof not less rank than Superintendent; and, if the name of such person be required to be inserted, and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property muit be guaranteed by an officer of nut less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Announcements of aV jterson* to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and irt alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. Theforcewhich causes particulars concerning delinquents or sto'en property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases, the officer signing the request for insertion of any announcement, will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday mornino. They must be dearly written on one side of the paper only, be in the usual form, and accompanicd by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, by cheque, crossed " Drummond dk Co.," Post Office Order payable at Parliament- st., Postal Order, or in Stamps. 13. Cities and Boroughs therein, arranged in strict alphabetical order. 2.— Any additional copies of the GAZETTE beyond the number at present supplied will be forwarded on application in the form set forth in circular of the 7th of November, 1883. 3.— It is particularly requested that any com- plaints as to the non- delivery or of irregularity in the date of delivery of the POLICE GAZETTE, may be at once notified to the Editor. SPECIAL NOTICE. FUGITIVE OFFENDERS. A case has come under the notice of the Editor, in which a person whose apprehension was sought in England, and who was described in the POLICE GAZETTE, gave himself up to the Colonial Police. The prosecutor declined to take any further action in the matter, but the case necessitated the dispatch of two telegrams, the cost of which had to be refunded by him. To avoid such expense, the Editor requests that if there is reason to believe that a fugitive offender is likely to go to the Colonies, and tho prosecutor is unwilling to incur any expense with a view to obtain his surrender, a notification be made in the communication sent to this Office to the effect that the offender is not to be arrested beyond the United Kingdom. The necessity for the adoption of such a course • will be apparent from the fact that the POLICE GAZETTE is circulated in the Colonies. APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT. METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT. 1.— B Division.— Wood- cut portrait and des- cription of SAMUEL OAKSHOTT, alias CAPTAIN HART, late of 16, Buckingham Palace Gardens, S. W., whose apprehension is sought for stealing £ 220 on 19th ult., age 40 ( looks older), height 5 ft. 8 in., complexio* dark, hair dark brown, is now clean- shaved with exoeption of small pointed mous- tache; wearing dark clothes, hard felt hat. Sup- posed to have been at Winchester on 26th ult. ( See Case No. 1, 25th ult.) Warrant issued. 2.— G Division.— For embezzling £ 30, on 26th ult.— ERNEST A. FIELD, age 21, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion fair, hair light; dress, dark grey frieze morning- coat suit, blue cap, with white stripes, or black soft felt hat, dented at top. A coal merchant's manager; native of North Hornsey, London. Slay be found at Derby. Warrant issued. 3.— X Division.— For stealing a lady's pneu- matic- tyre bicycle ( nearly new), loop frame, japanned gear case, " Swiftsure " on frame— A MAN, age 35, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion, hair and whiskers dark; dress, black coat, light trousers, straw hat, wearing gold eye- glasses. Warrant issued. Information to be forwarded to the Metropolitan Police Office, New Scotland Yard, S. W. 4.- CITY OF LONDON. - For obtaining £ 2,000 by false pretences- Buildings, E. C., and 116, Blomfield Terrace, Pad- dington, age 70, height 5 ft. 7 in., stout build, com- plexion sallow, hair, whiskers and moustache. Suffers from a cough. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. McWilliam, 26, Old Jewrv, E. C. ABERDEENSHIRE. 5.— Aberdeen { County).— For fraud— ALEX- ANDER ANDERSON, of 15, Littlejohn Street, Huntley, alias JAMES WYND, of Nether Kirkgate, Aberdeen, and HERE GASTEL, of 15, Montague Street, Edinburgh, age about 27, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., stout build, complexion, hair, moustache and eyes dark, full face ; dress ( when last seen), blue serge jacket suit, dark tweed overcoat, dark cap. Supposed to be a German, but speaks English well. He advertises for rare postage and fiscal stamps, or replies to advertisers wishing to dispose of such, giving a postal address at a common lodging- house or small shop, and on receipt of letters disposes of their contents and absconds. Information to the Chief Constable, County Police Office, Aberdeen. AYRSHIRE. 6.— Ayr ( County).— Portrait and description of O T H E POLICE GAZETTE. FRIDAY, OCTOBER 9, 1896* DAVID JOHNSTON, alias DAVID JAMES GLEN- DINNING, whose apprehension is sought for steal- ing 5 watches ( recovered), and 1 gentleman's gold geneva watch, No. 66288; 1 gentleman's silver lever, silver dial. No. 86390 ; 3 gentlemen's silver levers, white dials ( 1 No. 7518 and 1 No. 4979 or 4997); 1 silver hunter lever, No. 42750, age 27, height 5 ft. 8 in., slight build, complexion pale, hair light, may be wearing slight light moustache, walks erect, assertive in manner and conversation; dress, dark coat and vest, light trousers, dark felt hat. A watchmaker. Absconded from Cumnock on 12th ult. He posted a letter at Carlisle on evening of 17th ult., addressed to his late employer, enclosing pawn- tickets of some of the stolen watches, and stating that he was going to America. He was sentenced to 60 days imprisonment for theft on 25th September, 1888, to 4 months on 21st January, 1891, and to 1 month on 25th August, 1891, all at Wigtown, and in name of DAVID JAMES- GLENDINNING. Warrant issued. 7.— Ayr { County).— Portrait and description of JAMES BELL, alias CAMPBELL, BROWN and HAY , whose apprehension is sought for horse- stealing on 22nd ult., age 22, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion fresh, hair black, slight moustache dark, eyes grey, scrofula cicatrices both sides of neck and under chin, burn scar on forehead, marks of old injuries on first and fourth left fingers, slouching gait; dress, old brown jacket, black corded vest, dark tweed trousers, faded red tartan scarf, dark peak cap, lace bouts. Is wanted at Kinning Park, Renfrewshire, and Lame, Antrim, for similar offences. Has been convicted of theft at Glasgow, Paisley and Govan, Scotch Criminal Register, 67/ 1895. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable of Ayrshire, Ayr. BERKSHIRE. 8— Reading ( Borough).— For larceny, 23rd ult.— A man who gave the name of FRED BAR- RETT, age 35 to 40, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., slight build, complexion sallow, hair ( turning grey) and moustache dark brown, eyes grey ( cast in right), tattooed on back of one hand; dress, short dark jacket and vest, of rough material, grey trousers, light cap, had with him a plaid Inverness waterproof coat. He took lodgings, stating he was an inspecto- 011 Great Western Railway, and had been ordered to- night work, and, after obtaining food, a hat, and basket, he left, saying he should be back in the morning. He also went to a second house, and obtained food and an old brown overcoat by similar means, giving the name of George Barrett. Warrant issued. Information to Head Constable Tewsley, Reading. BRECONSHIRE. 9.— Crickhowell ( County). — For stealing 1 glazier's diamond, marked " Sharrat and Newtli on ferrule; 1 looking- glass; 1 hair- brush and comb; 15| dozen caps, various sizes and colours; 2 Welsh flannel shawls, light brown colour, with brown stripe forming a square about 2 in.— DAVID LEVIN, a Jew, age 23, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 in., complexion, hair and slight moustache dark, cast in left eye, cut mark over left eyebrow, supposed scald marks on chest; dress, dark jacket and vest, grey cloth trousers with dark brown stripe, black bowler hat, light lace boots. A hawker. Warrant issued. 10.— Crickhowel! ( County).— For absconding from Hay Workhouse, and stealing clothing, the property of the Guardians— WILLIAM DAVIES, age 23, height 5 ft. 1 or 2 in., complexion swarthy, hair dark, lost left leg; dress, blue cloth jacket, plaid vest, cord trousers, grey cloth cap, strong nailed boots. Ap- pearance of a collier; native of Hay. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Winterson, Crickhowell. CHESHIRE. 11.— Oakmere ( County).— For larceny, 4th inst. — A man, who gave the name of JAMESHORNE, age about 40, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., stout build, com- plexion fresh, hair light brown, clean- shaved, eyes ( sunken) dark; dress, light dust- coat, light grey eoc » t, brown plaid trousers, black hard felt hat, lace boots, blue tie with white spots, and - a silver horse- shoe pin. A tramping groom. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Johnson, Oakmere. DORSETSHIRE. 12.— Wimborne ( County).— On a warrant for burglary, at Verwood Railway Station, 23rd, and at Alderholt), 24th ult., and stealing £ 2 7s. 6d.— Licence Holder THOMAS HOOPER, alias CHRIS- TOPHER HUNT, THOMAS HUNT, THOMAS SMITH and THOMAS CUTLER, Office No. 2879- 96, age 50, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion fair, hair and moustache sandy, eyes blue, scar over left eye, and on left shin, " D." on left side. Traced to Basingstoke and Farnham, Hants, 1st inst.; then dressed in brown tweed jacket, dark cord vest and trousers ( all new), and blue cap, with dark stripes. Well known to the Hants Constabulary. Sentenced at Win- chester Assizes, 27th July, 1889, to 7 years penal servitude, for burglary. Liberated, on 2nd licence. 19th September, 1896. y F P 803. Information to Superintendent Marsh, Wimbonie ESSEX. 13.— Colchester ( County).— Forstealing a bicycle ( recovered)— FREDERICK GAY, alias BERTIE WARD, BERT FARLEY, RUBY, and " BERTIE, THE NIGGER," age 25, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., slight build, complexion fair, hair ( curly) light, eyes blue, near- sighted, often wears glasses. Tattooed " E. H.," Burmese flower- pot with flower on left forearm, flags left wrist; dress, when last seen, blue serge jacket and double- breasted vest, light clofti trousers, white cloth trousers under, brown soft felt hat, brown shoes and socks. A comedian ; native of Kennington, Lon- don. May be found singing in the streets, or at low music halls. Warrant issued. Information to Inspector Terry, Thorpe- le- Soken, or Supt. Ackers, Colchester. GLAMORGANSHIRE. 14.— Cardiff ( Borough).— For obtaining food and lodgings by false pretences— A man who gave the name of GEORGE BARRET, age about 40, height 5 ft. 9 in., slight build, complexion, hair, and beard ( about three weeks' growth) dark, ring tattooed on finger, crown back of hand; stated he was a checker oil Great Western Railway; and obtained money on the pretence that there was a sale of unclaimed property, and that, being a servant of the company, he could buy cheaply. GLOUCESTERSHIRE. 15.— Cheitenham ( County).— For deserting his family, 23rd ult.— GEORGE CRISP, age 39, height 5 ft. 9 in., stout build, complexion fresh, hair light brown, moustache and side whiskers sandy, eyes grey. Native of Tewkesbury. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. McRae, Cheltenham. 16.— Bristol ( City).— For stealing, 6th ult., £ 13. — GEORGE TALBOT, alias JOSEPH W. TAAFFE, age 24, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion fair, thin face, hair dark brown, slight moustache light, round- shouldered, 2 boil marks right side of neck. A che- mist's assistant. ( See Case No. 30, February 1st, 1895.) Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Bristol. HAMPSHIRE. 17.— Southampton ( Borough).— For stealing,. 10th ult., a cash- box and £ 96— WALTER HENRY BATTEN, age 25. height 5 ft. 10 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, slight moustache, eyes hazel, 5 dots tattooed right arm, one on back of left arm, walks erect; dress, black diagonal morning coat, brown tweed trousers, bound with, braid at bottoms, black hard hat. A labourer; may seek employment at docks, or endeavour to leave the country. He has served in the Royal Marine Artillery, and will account for possession of money by stating it is deferred pay. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Berry, Southamp- ton. HERTFORDSHIRE. 18.— Hatfield ( County).— Forstealing a pony and harness ( recovered), a Ralli car, painted black, upper panel blue, " Warner" wheels, picked out straw colour, oval shape lamps, " Walker, Redbourn," on wheel caps, green American cloth cushions, and a set of black pony harness, plated— JAMES BANDY, age about 28, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion fair, hair light brown, one eyelid droops, mark caused by operation on one leg; dress, light overcoat, dark clothes ( shabbv), hard felt hat. Was convicted of horse- stealing at Cricklewood about 12 months ago. Native of Redbourn. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Reynolds, Hatfield; or In- spector Shore, County Police, St. AJbans. 19.— Hemel Hempstead ( County).— For embez- zling £ 1 0s. 4d.— WILLIAM FASSMDGE, age 20, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fresh, hair ( cut short) light, eyes blue, small scar back of right hand ; dress, brown coat and vest, light striped trousers, black hard felt hat, brown boots. A fishmonger; native of Chiswick, Middlesex. Is a deserter from the 3rd Hussars. ( See Case No. 40, 9th June last). Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Frogley, Hemel Hempstead. 20.— Hitchin ( County).— For stealing £ 7 10s. on 28th August last— EDWARD SHREEVES, age 43, height 5 ft. in., complexion and hair ( turning grey) dark, eyes grey, scar right forearm; dress ( usually) rough dark mixture clothing. Has served in the Army. Sometimes works as an engineer's labourer, and is now supposed to be employed at some docks near Manchester. Native of Hitchin. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Reynolds, Hitchin. ISLE OF ELY. 21.— March ( County).— For obtaining, by false pretences, 15th ult., a '• Humber ' 96 diamond frame, pneumatic road- racing bicycle, standard tyres, American butterfly pedals ; 1 with " Coliniva" toe- cap,, the other plain, lamp- lighting table on bottom tube, trade- mark on head tube, " Made by the Rowe Cycle Co., Cowgate, Peterborough," transferred on seat pillar- tube, " Supplied by Martin F. Rowe, cycle agent, Station Road, March," tangent spokes, " low drop handle- bar, lamp bracket, plated pump, india- rubber clips, no step— A MAN, age 30 to 32, height about 5 ft. 5 in., complexion, hair, and heavy mous- tache dark, of gentlemanly appearance; dress, dark suit, hard hat. KENT. £ 1 SEWAED. 22.— Canterbury ( City).— For deserting her child,. leaving it chargeable to the Canterbury Union— ALICE CAROLINE ANSLOW, age 21, height 5 It. 1 in., complexion fresh, hair black, eyes hazel. Warrant issued. The above reward will be paid by the Canterbury Board of Guardians for such information as will lead to the arrest of ANSLOW. Information to Chief Constable Farmery, Canter- bury. LANARKSHIRE. 23.— Glasgow ( City).— Portrait and description of JOHN MILLAR, whose apprehension is sought for FRIDAY, OCTOBER 9, 1896. LANCASHIRE. 24.— Chorley ( County.)— For larceny, at Wheel- ton, 30th ult.— A MAN, age 45, height 5 ft. 5 in. complexion ruddy, hair and moustache urown ; dress, blue serge jacket, black cloth vest, brown corduroy trousers, dark grey cap, and clogs. A navvy; said to be well known at Darwen. Is accompanied by his wife and a girl age 12. Information to Supt. Norris, Chorley. 25.— Blackpool ( Borough).— For failing to re- port— Licence Holder JOHN DUCKWORTH, Office No. 48704, age 31, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion . sallow, hair dark, eyes light brown, JOMAD " and other marks ( indistinct) over left wrist, bottle and spray of flowers back of left forearm, " JD," bracelet and pendant on left wrist, and back of hand, indis- tinct tattoo marks between left thumb and fore- finger, rings on 2nd and 3rd fingers, girl dancing on front of right forearm, bracelet on right wrist, star and wreath pendant to same on right hand, scar left side bridge of nose, mole centre of back of neck, below left nipple, vase, spray of flowers and leaves centre of chest; acne spot3 all over back. Sentenced at Liverpool Assizes, 3rd December, 1891. to 5 years penal servitude, for attempting to shoot. Licenced 26th September. 1895. R 478. Information to Chief Constable, Blackpool. SC.— Salford ( Borough). — For stealing 30s., 26th ult.— WILLIAM MOSSLEY, age about 35, height 5 ft. 9 in., stout build, complexion fresh, hair and moustache dark ; dress, blue melton overcoat, black and white plaid trousers, white hard felt hat. A bookmaker; bets in the names of BILL SMART and FRED BELL. Supposed a native of Wakefield. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Town Hall, Salford. 27.— Warrington ( Borough).— Portrait and des- cription of JOHN TOOMBS REDHEAD, whose ap- prehension is sought for embezzling £ 2 Is. 5d., on 21st August last, age about 45, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 in., rather stout build, complexion sallow, hair ( bald on top) dark brown, moustache dark ( until recently wore a beard). Of good address. He was employed t as Superintendent of Agencies for the London, Edin- •, burgh and Glasgow Assurance Company, Limited. Supposed to be accompanied by A WOMAN, age about 36, short, hair dark; a native of Hertford, but until lately resided at Haslinsden, near Rawten. stall. Has with her a baby, about 8 months old. Wan- ant issued. Information to Chief Constable Talbot, Warring- ton. LINCOLNSHIRE. 28.— Horncastle ( County).— For obtaining £ 15 by false pretences, 8th ult.— WILLIAM SMITH PORTER, alias SHIRLEY WYNNE, CHARLES GREGORY, HENRY WOODS, GEE, GALLOWAY. EDWARD ELLIS, HUGH ELMITT, and HUGH SOULBY, age about 45, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 in., com plexion swarthy, side whiskers and moustache sandy, red nose, rather weak eyes, large head, wears an eye- glass, addicted to drink, of gentlemanly appearance ; dress, dark coat and vest, light check trousers, hard felt hat, elastic side- boots. He was formerly a solicitor's clerk at Pontypool and Newmarket, and is known at Lynn and Scarborough. He obtained 5 blank cheques on the Capital and Counties Banking Com- pany, Boston Branch, 4 of which he has cashed. The remaining cheque, No. F 32385, is probably now in his possession. He has also obtained £ 45 from Lloyd's Bank, Abergavenny, Monmouth. ( See Case No. 7, 3rd April, 1891, and No. 25 this date). Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Costar, Horncastle. 29.— Kesteven ( County).— For larceny— MARK alias TAFFY TOWNSEND, of Lincoln, age 28, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., stiff build, complexion sun- burnt, hair and small moustache dark brown ; dress, long dark grey overcoat, dark jacket and vest, drab- bets trousers, dirty stand- up collar, brown cloth cap, with fancy stitching, blucher boots. Carried a white pillow- slip containing clothing. Has been tramping the country for the past two years, occasionally work- ing for farmers, or as ostler at public- houses. Warrant issued. Information to Supt Cabourn, Kesteven. 30.— Stamford ( County). — For stealing, 3rd inst., 1 gentleman's silver ring, initials " E. H. S. " thereon ; 1 small pearl- hafted pocket knife, contain- ing 2 blades, glove- hook and pricker— A MAN, age about 20, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fair, hair light brown, clean- shaved, may have a very small light moustache, pimples on face; dress, dark suit, white collar, dark bow- tie with white spots, dark blue muftier with red spots, light brown soft felt hat, dented at top, dark brown band, and rather wide brim, lace boots ; carried a walking- stick, with hook- handle. Stated he was opening butchers' shops foi Eastman's Company. May be found following Gin- nett's Cirous. Information to Supt. Clarke, Stamford. 31.— Grantham ( Borough).— For stealing, 2nd inst., a pneumatic diamond frame safety bicycle, transfer " Ivel, Biggleswade," clincher tyre, with extra cover to back wheel, direct spokes, usual parts plated, no mudguards, lamp, or brake— A man, who gave the name of BROWN, age about 28, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., hair and moustache light; dress, brown tweed suit and cap. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Jones, Grantham. MONMOUTHSHIRE. 33.— Abergavenny ( County).— For obtaining, 26th ult., seven £ 5 notes, Nos. 39457 to 39463, issued at Birmingham, T/ 24, 5th August, 1895, all marked " Lloyds Bank, Abergavenny," and £ 10 gold, by means of false pretence— HERBERT FISHER ( supposed false), age about 45, height 5 ft. 3 or - 4 in., complexion dark, clean- shaved, sometimes wears eye- glasses with gold cord, of gentlemanly appearance; dress, light tweed coat, vest, and cap. He paid into the Bank a worthless cheque for £ 1,300. on the Boston Bank, stating he had bought some property in the neighbourhood, and had arranged to settle with the agent on the following Tuesday.
