All announcements for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communications upon them, should be addressed to THE EDITOR OF THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SQOTLAND YARD, LONDON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 3. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions be clearly stated. 5. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property, will be prominently inserted, with detailed particulars, at a cost of 15s. per portrait, and of Is. 611. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, including the expense of engraving on wood. 6. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and, if the name of such person be required to be inserted, and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property mut be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. A nnouncements ofol' persons to be apprehended or of stolen proper ty bear a number, and are alphab'. tically arranged by counties. 9. The fore*, which causes particulars concerning delinquents or sto'en pror^ rty to be inserted » ' » the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at owe transmit to the. Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases, the officer signing the request for insertion of any announcement, will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only, be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office. SPECIAL NOTICE. FUGITIVE OFF£ NDERS. APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT. A case has comc under the notice of the Editor, in which a person whose apprehension was sought in England, and who was described in the POLICE GAZETTE, gave himself up to the Colonial Police. The prosecutor declined to take any further action in the matter, but the case necessitated the dispatch of two telegrams, the cost of which had to be refunded t> y him. To avoid such expense, the Editor requests that if there is reason to believe that a fugitive offender is likely to go to the Colonies, and tho prosecutor is unwilling to incur any expense with a view to obtain his surrender, a notification be made in the communication sent to this Ollice to the effect that the offender is not to be arrested beyond the United Kingdom. The necessity for the adoption of such a course twill be apparent from the fact that the POLICE GAZETTE is circulated in ( lie Colonies. METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT. 1.— C. O. ( Convict Supervision Depart- ment.— Wood- cut portrait and description of FREDERICK BRAMH AM, alias STEVENS, F. T. DODDHAM, WHETHAM, and HENDERSON, Miscellaneous No. 8025- 96, whose apprehension is sought for larceny ( lodger), age 47, height 5 ft. G in., complexion fair, hair brown, eyes grey, 2 moles left side of face, fleshy mole centre of back, on right shoulder blade, ana inside upper left arm, large wart in left groin, scar on right shin, inside right knee, and outside right forearm, both big toe nails deformed. Sentenced at North London Sessions, 11th Feb- ruary, 1895, to 16 months hard labour for larceny ( lodger). 3850 2.— D. Division.— For stealing 1 8- pointed dia- mond star, silver setting, 1 large stone in centre, sur- rounded by several smaller, can be used as brooch or pin; 1 lady's gold keyless hunting watch, No. 58139, " Louie," on one side, " J. H. S." formed by whip, bit, and 2 horseshoes on the other, engraved cases; 1 gentleman's gold small- link pattern albert guard; 2 small gold fancy pattern chains, 1 has square piece of rough gold, set 1 diamond and ruby, the other, a gold enamelled basket of flowers attached; 4 lady's gold rings, 1 large single stone diamond, claw setting, 1 gipsy, set 3 diamonds, " As- cension Day, 1879,:' engraved inside, 1 heart- shape set diamond and turquoise, 1 half- hoop filigree, set 2 sapphires and 2 pearls, " Ruth" engraved inside; 1 gold bangle, set 1 emerald ; 2 other stones missing; 1 gold curb bracelet, padlock attached— A MAN, age about 28, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., complexion sallow, thin features, hair and slight moustache brown; dress, black coat, dark vest, black hard felt hat, of gentlemanly appearance. He called at a house, under the pretence of repairing the telephone wire. Carried a coil of green wire, and an electric testing box. 3.— H. Division.— For obtaining a quantity of cigars by fraud— CHARLES E. WYATT, late of the " Bull" Hotel, Cranbrook, Kent, age 37, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fair, hair and slight moustache light, supposed to have lost first joint of right index finger; dress, black morning coat' and vest, dark trousers, black hard felt hat. Warrant issued. 4.— J Division. — GEORGE BERTIE MES- SENGER, Case No. - 2, 19th June last, not to be arrested. Warrant withdrawn. 5.— Y Division.— For obtaining, 1st inst., 2 brown geldings— lst, 5 years, 14 hands 3 in.; 2nd, 6 years, 14 hands 2 in. ; 1 bay gelding, 6 years, 15 hands; 1 black gelding, 5 years, 15 hands; 2 bay mares— lst, 6 years, 14 hands 2 in. ; 2nd, 5 years, 14 hands 2 in.; and 1 brown mare, 5 years, 14 hands 2 in., by means of a fictitious cheque on Lloyds Bank, Lombard Street, London— C. H. MAGNAIC ( supposed false), age 40, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion, hair and moustache dark; were dark clothes and felt hat. Appearance of a foreigner. Warrant issued. Information to be forwarded to the Metropolitan Police Office, New Scotland Yard, S. W. CITY OF LONDON. 6.— For embezzling £ 31 17s. 2d.— B. S. BOS, a Dutchman, late of 46, Battleden Road, Highbury, ( where he was known in name of BEER), age about 47, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion fair, hair ( bald on top) light, whiskers and moustache ginger, very bad teeth. Is well- educated, and speaks English fluently; dress, black frock- coat and vest, light striped trousers, high silk hat. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. Information to Supt. McWilliam, 26, Old Jewry, E. C. ANGLESEY. 7._ Menai Bridge ( County).— For obtaining food and lodgings by false pretences— JANE GRIFFITH, alias JANE EVANS and SARAH ROBERTS, age 18 to 20, height 5 ft. 5 in., stout build, complexion and hair dark, large eyes; dress, grey dress, black cloth jacket, dark brown straw hat, lace boots. Warrant issued. Information to Inspector Jones, Menai Bridge. CHESHIRE. 8.— Macclesfield ( County).— For burglary, 31st ult., at Sutton, and stealing 1 old silver watch, dent centre of outer case : 1 pair strong boots, size 9, newly soled and heeled : 1 pair brown knitted stock- ings ; 1 white linen shirt: 1 blue and white check flannelette singlet; 1 brown cloth vest; 1 large pair scissors ; 1 steel watch- chain, with 1 sixpenny and 2 threepenny pieces attached— ARTHUR STEELE, age 6 T H E POLICE GAZETTE. FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 11, 1896. about 25, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion fresh, hair ( rather long) brown, carries his head slightly forward, and walks with shuffling gait; dress, dirty blue and white striped slop, dirty cord trousers, dark peak cap, supposed to be wearing stolen boots. May be found in Shropshire. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Downes, Macclesfield. DENBIGHSHIRE. 9.— Wrexham ( County).— For larceny, 2nd inst. — JOHN WILSON, ago 40, height about 5 ft. 9 in., complexion sallow, hair and moustache dark brown, long face and neck, nose broken, addicted to drink ; dress, black jacket, light cloth trousers and vest, white front, brown cloth cap, light lace boots with square toes. A tramping painter, supposed native of Ellor Street, Pendleton. Warrant issued. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Jones, Wrexham. DEVONSHIRE. 10.— Exeter ( County).— Absconded from Devon Boy's Reformatory, Brampford Wood, Exeter— WIL- LIAM HEYSL'/ IT, age 16, height 5 ft., complexion dark ( sunburnt), hair brown, " W. H." and dots tattooed on one arm; wearing the Reformatory cloth- ing. Has been a donkey- driver at Teignmouth. Plays a tin whistle in public- houses. May endeavour to enlist. Information to the Deputy Chief Constable of Devon, Exeter. DURHAM. 11.— South Shields ( Borough).— For falsifying accounts— JOHN LISLE, age 36 to 38, height about 5 ft. 8 in., stout build, complexion dark, full round face, hair and moustache dark brown. Has a habit of twisting his watch- chain when walking or convers- ing, speaks with Tyneside dialect; dress, dark jacket and vest, brown stripe trousers, usually black soft hat. A tailor, and late secretary to the Amalgamated Society of Tailors. Warrant issued. 12.— South Shields ( Borough).— For obtaining £ 10 on 21st ult., by trick— TWO MEN, 1st, age about 25, height about 5 ft., complexion dark, hair dark brown, clean- shaved, long sharp nose, of Jewish appearance; dress, light jacket and vest, light stripe trousers, dark tie, hard felt hat. 2nd, age about 30, height, about 5 ft. 7 in., hair and moustache sandy, knock- kneed, large feet, shuffling gait; dress, light coat and vest, light check trousers, hard felt hat, light tie, lace boots. The money was obtained from a seaman on the pretence of backing a horse for him. Information to Chief Constable Morant, South Shields. 13.— Sunderland ( Borough).— For stealing, 26th ult., from an hotel, a gold watch, a gold penholder ( recovered), and a gold curb pattern albert— JAMES BERRY, age about 55, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., complexion ruddy, sharp features, hair ( slightly bald on top) ginger ( turning grey), short full grey beard, flat chest; dress, black worsted jacket and vest, light grey trousers, light tie, with pink stripe, large, broad sole boots. Information to Chief Constable Huntley, Sunder- land. GLAMORGANSHIRE. 14.— Cardiff ( Borough).— For stealing 1 lady's 18- carat gold watch, flowered back, ring broken, with 18- carat gold curb- pattern chain attached; 1 18- carat gold ring, set 2 diamonds and ,3 sapphires; 1 ditto ( plain), set 3 diamonds ( 1 missing). — A man who gave the name of HOOPER ( but has had letters addressed WILLIAMS), age 20, height 5 ft. 2 in., complexion fresh, pock- pitted, " T. H." and anchor tattooed on left arm; dress, J length fawn overcoat, black coat and vest, light trousers, black and white check tie, blue shirt, pink shirt- front, black hard felt hat, brown boots. He represented himself to be a professional song and dance artiste, in name of SID LAWRENCE, also stated that he held a hackney carriage driver's licence at Weston- super- Mare, where it is believed his parents reside. Information to Head Constable McKenzie, Cardiff. HAMPSHIRE. 15.— Bournemouth ( County). — For obtaining credit while an undischarged bankrupt— JAMES ARTHUR WYATT, age about 35, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion and hair dark, heavy black moustache ; dress, when last seen, grey suit and cloth leggings. A forage and coal merchant; native of Lychett, Dorset. May seek employment as a brewer's traveller. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Foster, Bournemouth. 16.— Portsmouth ( Borough).— For stealing, 9th inst., a silver watch ( recovered)— G. DAVIS, alias BRIANT, age 27, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., slight build, oomplexion and hair very dark, moustache dark; dress, black jacket and vest, blue trousers, light cap, all very dirty. 17.— Portsmouth ( Borough).— For stealing, 12th inst., 1 heavy gold albert, long and short links, drop chain, with seal, surrounded with " Forget- me- nots," and word " Forget- me- not" on bottom of seal— EDWARD WILSON, age 25J, height 5 ft. 7f in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes grey, girl on union jack, cross, " In memory of Sarah," and rose tattooed right forearm, pot of flowers, and rose on left foVe- arm ; dress, blue^ serge jacket suit, and light- coloured cloth cap. A deserter from the Royal Artillery. Information to the Chief Constable, Town Hall, Portsmouth. 18.— Winchester ( City). — For stealing, 8th inst., from a jeweller's shop— 1 lady's small size, 18- carat gold dress ring, heart- shape top, with small diamond in centre of heart— A MAN, age 24 to 26, height 5 ft. 10 or 11 in., very slight build, complexion fair, hair brown, slight light moustache, very thin white hands; dress, brown jacket suit, black hard felt hat. Of military appearance. Information to Supt. Felton, Winchester. HERTFORDSHIRE. 19.— Bishop Stortford ( County).— For larceny, 14th inst.— SAMUEL NEVILLE, age 40 to 50, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., complexion swarthy, hair ( turning grey) brown, clean- shaved, round shouldered; dress, grey cloth suit and cap, heavy lace boots. Carries a bag containing tools. A tramping wheel- wright. Native of Thaxted, Essex,. Warrant issued. 20.— Bishop Stortford ( County).— For desert- ing his wife and family, leaving them chargeable to the Bishop Stortford" Union— JOSEPH LEWIS, age 38, height 5 ft. 10 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes hazel, broken nose, little finger of left hand deformed ; supposed wearing white cord trousers and hairy cap. A native of Albury, Herts. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Duke, Bishop Stortford. 21.— St. Albans( City).— For attempting to obtain £ 7 10s. 0d., on 29th ult., by means of a forged cheque — A MAN, age about 30, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., com- plexion fair, very slight moustache; respectably dressed. He sent a boy to a tradesman, with a letter purporting to come from a prominent householder, containing a cheque on the City Bank, Limited, Ox- ford Street Branch, and, on enquiry being made, it was found that a similar fraud had been attempted on same date with a cheque on the Consolidated Bank. The cheque- books are proceeds of burglaries, and several cheques have been passed in London and the Provinces. Warrant issued. Information to Head Constable Blatch, St. Albans. KENT. 22.— Maidstone ( Borough).— For stealing, 2nd inst., a donkey and cart ( recovered) GILES, alias " GINGJi. ll BLUE," age about 55, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., hair, whiskers and moustache ginger ( turning grey); dress, old short jacket, dirty cloth trousers and cap. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Mackintosh, Maid- stone. LANARKSHIRE. 23.— Glasgow ( City).— Portrait and description of JOHN MILLAR, whose apprehension is sought for embezzling £ 240, within the last 3 years, age about 42, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., well- built, complexion sallow, hair, whiskers and moustache dark, eyes dark. Dresses well. Late cashier of the Steel Company of Scotland. Absconded 5th inst. ( The above photo- graph was taken 10 years ago) Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, City Police Glasgow. LANCASHIRE. 24.— Chorley ( County).— For larceny, 1st ult., at Leyland— A MAN, age 38, height 5 ft. 8 in., com- plexion fresh, hair dark brown, moustache sandy; dress, brown plaid suit, double- breasted vest, black hard felt hat, strong lace boots. A labourer •' some- times employed as a firebeater; native of Bolton. Information to Supt. Norris, Chorley. 25.— Leigh ( County).— For larceny— ALICE ALLANSON, age 45, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion dark, thin face, hair brown; dress, navy- blue skirt, black fur tippet, brown straw hat, lace boots. Higginbotham, Lei" h. 26.— Accrington ( Borough).— For embezzlement - JOSEPH STOREY, age 30, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in. complexion fresh, hair and slight moustache dark brown; dress, light brown jacket suit, turn- down collar, black hard felt hat. A bookkeeper; native of Clayton- le- Moors, near Accrington. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Beattie, Accrington. 27.— Liverpool ( City).— For obtaining £ 30 by false pretences, 20th ult.— JOSEPH HAY, age 32 height 5 ft. 2 or 3 in., hair and moustache light, thin face, good teeth, slightly projecting; dress, vhen last seen, brown suit, hard hat, lately a general business agent. He advertised for a partner with £ 40, and after obtaining £ 30 absconded. Warrant issued. Information to the Head Constable, Detective Department, Liverpool. 28.— Manchester ( City).— For stealing £ 500, 5th inst.— MARSHALL LINDSEY PETTY, age 36, height 5 ft. 10 in., complexion fresh, hair light sandy, inclined to curl, moustache sandy, of smart appearance, walks with short quick steps; dress, when last seen, bine serge suit, bowler hat. A clerk. Absconded 5th inst. Information to the Chief Constable, Manchester. LINCOLNSHIRE. 29.— Horncastle ( County).— For obtaininig £ 15 by false pretences, 8th inst.— WILLIAM SMITH PORTE 1!, alias SHIRLEY WYNNE, CHARLES GREGORY, HENRY WOODS, GEE, GALLOWAY EDWARD ELLIS, HUGH ELMITT, and HUGH SOULBY, age about 45, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 in., com- plexion swarthy, side whiskers and moustache sandy, red nose, rather weak eyes, large head, wears an eye- glass, addicted to drink, of gentlemanly appearance; dress, dark coat and vest, light check trousers, hard felt hat, elastic side- boots. He was formerly a solicitor's clerk at Pontypool and Newmarket, and is known at Lynn and Scarborough. He obtained 5 blank cheques on the Capital and Counties Banking Com- pany, Boston Branch, for 3 of which ho has obtained cash. ( See Case No. 7, 3rd April, 1891.) Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Costar, Homcastle. MIDLOTHIAN 30.— Edinburgh ( City).— For stealing, 31st ult., jewellery ( recovered) from an hotel— A MAN, age about 25, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion fresh, hair brown or light, clean- shaved, has lost 1 front upper tooth, which is very noticeable; dress, light dust overcoat, light brown tweed suit, white collar and bow tie, soft brown felt hat, indented in crown, of gentlemanly appearance, speaks with foreign accent. Supposed to be a travelling hotel thief. \ 31 — Edinburgh ( City).— For stealing, 6th inst., from an hotel— 1 crescent- shaped gold brooch, about size of florin, set row of rabies, outside and inner row of diamonds; 1 pair lady's gold sleeve links, oval- shape, " M. A. D." in monogram on each; 1 old- fashioned gold locket, form of book, with portraits of 2 ladies inside, outside slightly engraved, fastens with clasp ; 1 necklet, composed of Parisian pearls, with small round imitation diamond clasp; 1 round- shaped star brooch, set Parisian diamonds; 1 gentle- mail's silver or metal keyless watch, white dial, " Perry and Company, London," on dial, engine- turned- cases ; 1 lady's old- fashioned gold guard- chain, close link, oval- shaped; 1 thin gold Mohoire Indian coin, about size of a florin, Persian figures and hiero- glyphics thereon ; 1 gentleman's old- fashioned gold revolving seal, white stone 1 side, green the other, with boar's head, and " W. B." thereon; 1 lady's old- fashioned gold seal, flat, supposed white stone; 1 small gold oval- shaped locket, raised horse- sho. e one side, glass with hair on other; 1 white metal pencil- case, with mother- of- pearl on sides, some of which is missing; 1 lady's gold bracelet, about £ in. broad, - R FEIDAY, SEPTEMBER 18, 189G. T T I E ; P O L I C E G A Z E T T E. ivy leaves thereon, clasp fastening, with small gold chain attached, 1 red seal, " Jane" supposed thereon ; 1 £ 10 Bank of England note, " Belfast Banking Com- pany, Limited, Dungannon Branch," stamped on back ; and £ 5 gold— A MAN, age 30 to 35, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion sallow, moustache ( trimmed and cut at ends) dark, small sunken eyes, broad features, high cheek bones ; dress, light fawn- coloured dust- coat, folding- down collar, dark brown cap, brown leather boots. He engaged a bedroom at the hotsl, and left the same day, leaving behind a large new brown leather Gladstone bag, which contained a white dress- shirt, marked 4 1)/ S 12 on neck ; 1 whitejpotted blue silk scarf; 1 old cotton majenta shirt; and filled np with rye straw, rags, and pieces of brick. When asked for his name, he tore off the heading of a Great Eastern Railway Hotel bill, bearing name of " H. G. ' Sparrow, Esq." Believed to be an expert hotel thief. Information to Chief Constable Henderson, Edin- burgh. MONMOUTHSHIRE. 32.— Abergavenny ( County).— Forhousebreaking, and stealing £ 8, on 8th inst.— ALBERT TANDY, age 38, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion sallow, hair dark, moustache brown ; dress, light brown coat and vest, blue striped trousers, may be wearing hat or cap, light lace boots. Has served several years in the Gloucestershire and Monmouthshire Constabularies, also as a detective on railway at Derby. Native of Dymock, Gloucestershire. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Davies, Abergavenny. OXFORDSHIRE. 33. Oxford ( County).— For failing to appear to summons, on a charge of larceny—- ALFRED SIMMONDS, age 50, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., com- plexion sallow, hair dark ( turning grey), moustache sandy ( turning grey); dress, short dark jacket and • vest," light- coloured trousers, white straw hat. A gardener; has served in the Army; is addicted to drink Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable of Oxfordshire, Oxford.
