All announcements for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communications upon them, should be addressed to THE EDITOR OF THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YARD, LONDON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning persons u- hose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 3. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions be clearly stated. 5. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property, will be prominently inserted, with detailed particulars, at a cost of 15s. per portrait, and of 7s. 6d. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, including the expense of engraving on wood. 0. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officefofnot less rank than Superintendent; and, if the name of such person be required io be inserted, and no warrant is in force against, him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property mu4 be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Announcements of aV persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and are alphabitically arranged by counties. 9. Theforcewhich causes particulars concerning delinquents or sto'en property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the. Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases, the officer signing the request for insertion of any announcement, will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only, be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, by cheque, crossed " Drummond Co.," Post Office Order payable at Parliament- st., Postal Order, or in Stamps. 13. Advertisements are accepted for the POLICE GAZETTE through Mr. James Willing, 125, Strand, London, the sole Agent, who will furnish the rates on application. 14. Cities and Boroughs therein, arranged strict alphabetical order. 2.— Any additional copies of the GAZETTE beyond the number at present supplied will be forwarded on application in the form set forth in circular of the 7th of November, 1883. 3.— It is particularly requested that any com- plaints as to the non- delivery or of irregularity in the date of delivery of the POLICE GAZETTE, may be at once notified to the Editor. The following is a copy of the order which governs the circulation, by the Metiopolitan Police, of advertisements, or reward bills, for the discovery of property or the detec- tion of crime. The Editor inserts it, in hope of preventing delays which sometimes occur in publishing such notices, on account of their not being in accordance with ( he regu- lations in force in the Metropolis :— 1. Printed hand- bills, or other advertisements, offering a reward for the discovery of property or the detection of crime, whether printed and issued by the Metropolitian Police, or distributed and exhibited, with the sanction of the Commissioners, ou the application of private persons, or of the Police of any County or Borough, must be clearly expressed in relation to the following points- fa) The amount of the reward. ( b) The conditions on which it is payable, { c) The person by whom it will be paid. ( d) That the name and address of the printer appear thereon. 2. No expression must be used in such an advertise, ment, in relation to property stolen, or criminally taken or disposed of, holding out any expectation t; iat the reward will be paid on its return without the offender being brought to trial, or without enquiry. NOTE.— There are ISO Stations of the Metropolitan l'ulice Forcc at which Notices can be posted. APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT. METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT. 1.— Criminal Investigation Department.— For obtaining money by false pretences— A. WILSON ( supposed false), age about 40, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., complexion dark, hair dark brown, eyes grey, large scar on right cheek ; speaks with strong Scotch accent; very plausible in manner; dress, light grey tweed jacket suit, white straw hat, or light tweed cap, lace boots. He calls on persons in suburbs of London, and represents himself to be an agent of the Prudential Assurance Company. Warrant issued. 2.— C. O. ( Convict Supervision Depart ment.— Wood- cut portrait and description of FREDERICK BRAMHAM, alias STEVENS, F. T DODDHAM, WHETHAM, and HENDERSON Miscellaneous No. 8025- 96, whose apprehension is sought for larceny ( lodger), age 47, height 5 ft. G in., complexion fair, hair brown, eyes grey, 2 moles left side of face, fleshy molo centre of back, on right shoulder blade, and inside upper left arm, large wart in left groin, scar on right shin, inside right knee, and outside right forearm, both big toe nails deformed. Sentenced at North London Sessions, 11th Feb- ruary, 1895, to 16 months hard labour for larceny ( lodger). 3850. Information to be forwarded to the Metropolitan Police Office, New Scotland Yard, S. W. CITY OF LONDON. 3.— For stealing £ 175s. 9d.— ROBERT WALKER HUTCHINSON,' age 34, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., rather stout build, complexion fresh, hair, beard and long heavy moustache ginger; speaks and writes German ; dress ( usually), blue reeter jacket and vest, light striped trousers, brown boots, black bowler hat. A clerk; native of London. Warrant issued. 4.— For stealing £ 60— EUSTACE AUGUSTUS HICKS, age about 35, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., complexion fair, hair and heavy moustache dark brown, eyes brown, mole on both cheeks, wears false teeth, thick speech, loose gait, drooping shoulders ; dress, dark blue reefer jacket, black vest, fancy grey striped trousers, black hard felt hat, patent leather button boots, with pointed toes. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. 5.— For larceny ( servant).— GEORGE SAY, age 53 height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., sliffht build, hair, moustache and short beard dark ( turning grey), nervous manner, has very thin hands; dress, blue serge suit, black felt hat. Native of London. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. Information to Supt. McWilliam, 26, Old Jewry, E. C. BEDFORDSHIRE. 6.— Dunstable ( County).— For t larceny, 17 th ult. — CHARLES BURGESS, age about 45, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., very red face, moustache light sandy; dress, dirty grey coat and vest, cord trousers, black hard hat, old boots, cut in front. Is a pensioner of the 60th Rifles; native of Caddington, Herts. Warrant issued. Information to Inspector Nottingham, Dunstable. BERKSHIRE 7.— Clewer ( County).— For stealing, 23rd ult., pony, waggonette and harness ( recovered).— HENRY LOVELOCK, age 21, height 5 ft. 8 in., com- plexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes dark, clean shaved; dress, dark suit, black hard felt hat, brown shoes, drab covert overcoat. A groom; native of Blackwater, Hants. Has been previously convicted at Winchester and Aylesbury. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Read, Clewer. BUCKINGHAMSHIRE. S.— Buckingham ( County).— For stealing, 26th ult., from an hotel at Yerney Junction, a leather purser containing 1 sovereign, 1 half- crown, and12 threepenny pieces with holes therein— W. E. HAMES, age 35, height 5 ft. 5 in., slight build, complexion fair, hair ( cut short) dark brown, moustache sandy, right knee has been injured, and is encased in a wire support, walks lame ; dress, long black overcoat, grey tweed trousers, dark cloth peak cap, generally wears a painter's slop under coat. A cattle drover; native of Stretham, near Ely. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Holland, Cam- bridge. CHESHIRE. 10.— Altrincham ( County).— For stealing £ 10, 19th ult., at Sale— MARY LARKINaKas McLAR- KIE, age about 20, height about 5 ft., complexion fresh, hair brown, fringe in front, rather prominent chin ; dress, black cashmere dress, trimmed beads, black silk cuffs and waistband, black chip sailor hat, with black band, green cape, tan gloves, lace boots. ESSEX. 11.— Southend- on- Sea( C, oMn< y).— Forobtaining £ 1 Is. 6d., by false pretences— HENRY HARRIS, age about 28, height about 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion sallow, hair and moustache very dark, eyes dark, of gentlemanly appearance; dress, blue serge suit, blue shirt with white spots, white tie with black spots, brown hard felt hat, brown shoes. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Simmonds, Southend- on- Sea. FORFARSHIRE. 12.— Dundee ( City).— G. H. CLARK, alias MAJOR CLARK, Case No. 18, 21st ult., not now wanted. LANCASHIRE. 18.— Rawtenstall ( County).— For stealing, be- tween 23rd and 24th ult., a silver English lever watch, No. 4103, long silver guard attached, and 17s.— A MAN, age 35, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., slight build, complexion fair, hair and slight moustache light, deaf; dress, dark tweed suit, much worn, black felt hat, lace boots. Stated he had been a soldier. Was accompanied by A WOMAN, who is also wanted for stealing a pair of men's low lace fehoes ; age 35, height 5 ft. 2 or 3 in., complexion and hair dark; dress, black dress, light plaid shawl, and the stolen shoes. They stated they had come from Burnley, and were going to Blackburn. Information to Supt. Procter, Rawtenstall. 19.— Liverpool ( City). — Licence Holder MICHAEL JAMES BAKER, Office No. 2456- 96. Case 29, 28th ult. Apprehension cancelled. MONTGOMERYSHIRE. 20.— Welshpool ( County) — For stealing a gun ( bailee)— ALFRED OWEN, alias BARNEY ROCK, age 43, height 5 ft. 3 in., complexion fresh ( sunburnt), hair, side whiskers and moustache sandy, scar on right ear, both little fingers contracted; last heard of going in direction of South Wales. A labourer; native of Welshpool. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Hughes, Newtown, or Deputy- Chief Constable Crowden, Welshpool. cord trousers, red and black plaid scarf, dark cloth cap, blucher boots, all much worn. SURREY. 27.— Farnham ( County).— For stealing clothing — EMILY LANGTUN, age about 26, height 5 ft.' 4 in., complexion and eyes dark, hair brown, con- spicuous mole on right cheek, 3 or 4 false upper front teeth, narrow, and of bad colour, and show white metal facings. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Bryant, Farnham. 28.— Reigate ( Borough).— For obtaining, 12th- ult., £ 10 10s. by a forged cheque— A MAN, age, 33 to 36, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 in., complexion fair, round face, hair and long moustache dark; dress, bluish- black suit, black hard felt hat, of good addresss, He called at a house with a sewing machine, and, after ascertaining the names of tradesmen with whom the occupier dealt, forged a cheque on the Consoli: dated Bank, Limited, and obtained cash from one of the tradesmen. GLOUCESTERSHIRE. 13.— Dursley ( County).— For larceny— WIL- LIAM SNELL, age about 30, height about 5 ft. 4 in., complexion swarthy, hair black, has a peculiar fierce expression; dress, dark coat, slate colour trousers, low bowler hat. A hairdresser ; native of Bristol. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Hopkins, Dursley. HEREFORDSHIRE. 14.— Ledbury ( County).— For larceny ( bailee), 10th ult.— MARY ANN SCOTT, age 63, height 5 ft. 2 in., complexion sallow, hair and eyes grey, stoops when walking; dress, black silk cape, black skirt and hat, heavy boots. A hawker of lace, etc., which she carries in a square pasteboard box. Has in her pos- session a pedlar's certificate, No. 9, granted at Led- bury, October 31st, 1895. Native of Nottingham. Is accompanied by her husband, age 60, height 5 ft. C in., clean shaved, parts his hair at back; dress, grey suit, and cap. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Phillips, Ledbury. NORTHUMBERLAND. 21.— Alnwick ( County).— For stealing ( bailee) 22nd ult.— A brown entire pony, about 12 hands, aged, blind in both eyes, hole in off ear, slit in near ear, spavin off hind leg, long mane and tail, some hair rubbed off ribs both sides, a set of harness, and a small spring cart, painted brown, front tied with rope, one red wheel, one brown— DAYID RILEY, age 18, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 in., complexion swarthy, hair dark brown, eyes grey, rather round shouldered, slouching gait; dress, dark tweed jacket, brown cord trousers, cap, and nearly new strong lace boots. A hawker; native of Bedlington ; has travelled about Northum- berland, Durham, and the Borders of Scotland. Warrant issued. Information to Capt. Terry, Chief Constable, Mor- peth ; or Supt. Rutherford, Alnwick. 22.— Newcastle- on- Tyne ( City).— For stealing £ 52— RALPH HENRY RRANCH, age about 22, height about 6 ft., slight build, complexion fair, hair light, slight moustache, walks erect; dress, large grey overcoat, dark green, blue, or grey jacket suit, black hard felt hat, or light peak cap. Carries a silver- mounted black silk umbrella, or silver- mounted polished walking- stick, foreign make. Warrant issued. Information to Capt, Nicholls, Chief Constable, Newcastle- upon- Tyne. A gar- dener ; supposed native of Chelmsford. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Reynolds, Hatfield, or to the Inspector in Charge, County Police Office, St. Albans. 16.— Hertford ( County).— For absconding from Herts Reformatory School— CHARLES BARTON, age 16, height 4 ft. 8 in., complexion fair, hair ( cut short) brown, eyes blue, " C. B." tattooed on fore- arm, and ring on finger; dress, cord jacket with plated buttons, cord trousers, striped calico shirt, red tie, blue worsted socks, dark cloth Glengarry cap with red braid, strong lace shoes ( nailed diagonally), or brown tw^ i jacket and vest, buttons to match, white socks, and may be wearing old light l* c< s house- boots. Clothes numbered 499. Native of Tunbridgc Well-.. Information to Supt. Parish, Hertford. 17.— Watford ( Comty).— For uttering a forged chequc for £ 13 6s., No. G. 2039, dated 30th July, 1896, on Birkbeck Bank— A man, known as JACK, age about 40, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion very fresh, sharp features, prominent nose, hair short, side whiskers sandy, smart appearance, walks quickly; dress, dark grey jacket suit, hard felt hat, frequently carries a black brief bag, about 12 in. long; is ac companied by a girl, supposed his daughter, age about 17, height 4 ft. 10 in., complexion dark, hair dark brown ( brushed back), eyes very dark; dress, long grey circular cloak, black toque hat. The cheque was taken from a book containing 11 others, wJijyit was by housebreaking at Weftfwtf. Warrant Information to Captain Wymer, Deputy Chief Constable, Watford. OXFORDSHIRE, 23.— Woodstock ( County).— For non- payment of maintenance arrears— HARRY WOODWARD, age 32, height 5 ft, 0 in., ^ mplexion dark, hair and mous- tache dark brown, eyes hazel, cut scar on left cheek. Was last seen at Chapeltown, near Sheffield, where he is supposed to be working in a coalpit. Has relatives at or near Shrivenham, Berks, Birmingham, Swindon and Leicester. Native of Combe, Wood- stock. Warrant issued. Information to Inspector Sorrell, Woodstock. PEMBROKESHIRE. 24.— Haverfordwest Castle ( County).— For an offence under tho Poaching Prevention Act— FRANK LLOYD, age 35, height 5 ft. 7 in., hair and mous- tache light brown. A native of Carmarthen. JOHN GLASS, age 36, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion dark, hair dark brown, eyes brown, deep scar on left cheek, left thumb and portion of hand deficient. A chim- ney sweep. Is a notorious poacher. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable of Pembroke- shire, Haverfordwest Castle. SOMERSETSHIRE. 25.— 11 minster ( Coimty).— For stealing ( 6ai7ee), 15th ult., an ice- cream vendor's barrow and fittings— SANA- CHAUTTE RACCHINE, an Italian, age 30, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion fair, full face, hair ( bald on top) and moustache dark, speaks good English ; dress, dark jacket ( faded green) and vest, light striped trousers, speckled straw hat. Supposed well known at Bristol. An ice- cream vendor. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Rawlings, Ilminster. STAFFORDSHIRE. 26. — Longton ( County).— For stealing, 25th ult., at Fenton, a horse ( recovered)— JOSEPH or THOMAS FOX, « ge 60, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 in., com- plexion dark, hair ( turning grey) dark, clean shaved, eyes brown; dress, brown jersey, cord vest, green SUSSEX ( EAST). 29.— Lewes ( County).— WILFRED WALTERS, Case No. 53, 28th ult., is identical with WILFRED WATERMAN, Office No. 1071- 96 ( see Case No. 1, same date). 30.— Lewes ( County).— For stealing a sack, con- taining 1 pair moleskin trousers; 1 coloured shirt; 2 handkerchiefs; 2 towels; 2 cans ( 1 pint, 1 quart) j 1 tin dish; and 1 wood pipe— JOHN THOMAS, age 14, looks older, height 5 ft., complexion fair, hair ( rather long) light; dress, brown tweed suit, light cap, old boots, too large for him. Has since been seen at Newhaven. 31.— Lewes ( County).— For stealing a silver verge watch, No. 5772, open face, white dial, glass chipped, maker " J. Parker, Lindfield "— HER- BERT WHITING alias SIDNEY SMITH, age 24, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., complexion fair, hair ( curly in front) light brown, clean shaved, eyes blue, very flat- footed, and slightly lame, scar back of one hand, woman tattooed on right forearm; dress, dark jacket and vest, white cord trousers, necker- chief, dark tweed cap. Native of llingmer, Sussex. Information to Supt. Stevens, Lewes. 32.— Hove ( Town). — For embezzlement — GEORGE CHURCHILL, late of Brighton, age 41, height 5 ft. 10 in., stout build, complexion fregh, hair dark brown, heavy drooping moustache dark, eyes, brown, has tender feet; dress, black morning coat and vest, dark trousers, black hard felt hat. A painter, formerly a butler. Was sentenced on 18th October, 1887, to 12 months imprisonment, at Lewes Quarter Sessions. May be found working at corn wharves, etc. Warrant issued. 33.— Hove ( Town). — For embezzlement — JAMES HARMAN, late of Brighton, age 28 to 30, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., slight build, complexion florid, hair light brown, clean shaved; dress, light- coloured coat, cord trousers, lace boots; addicted to drink. A groom and labourer. Recently employed travel- ling in charge of an entire horse. Is supposed to have relatives residing at Hastings. Warrant issued. 34.— Hove ( Town).— For deserting his family,. 7th ult.— EDWARD WALLER, age 37, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., stout build, complexion dark sallow, hsir black, rather heavy moustache and eyes dark, u E. W." tattooed on wrist; dress, black monkey- jacket,, dark vest, cord trousers, heavy boots, cloth cap. Warrant issued. Information to Major Teevan, Chief Constable, Hove. 35.— Eastbourne ( Borough).— For stealing, 2nd. inst,, 1 blue serge jacket and vest, jacket darned inside right sleeve; 1 pair light tweed trousers, pocket right hip— ALBERT SMITH, age about 20, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., slight build, hair ( bjishy in front) and slight moustache light, eyes blue, turns his feet out; supposed wearing the stolen jacket, old cord trousers, light cap, dirty tie with blue flowers, old heavy boots. 36.— Eastbourne ( Borough).— For cruelty to- their child— EDWIN PENFOLD, age about 35, height about 5 ft. 5 in., whiskers and moustache dark brown; dress, dark clothes. A coal- vard labourer; native of West Grinstead. MARY ANN PENFOLD, ago about 33, height about 5 ft. 3 in., complexion; sallow, long face, hair dark; wearing dark clothes. They have with them 3 boy3, ages 9, 6, and 2. Warrant issued. Information to Ci'iief Constable Plumb, " Easts- bourne. 37.— Hastings ( Borough).— For uttering a forged cheque on the City Bank, Oxford Street Branch— FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 4, 189G. T H E POLICE OAZETTE. JAMES BARTON, age 30, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., - complexion pale, hair light brown; dress, grey over- coat, dark trousers, white straw hat, with black band. Warrant issued. WARWICKSHIRE. 38.— Birmingh am ( City).— For failing to appear to his bail, 21st ult., charged with stealing a bicycle - on 8th ult.— CHARLES CROSS, ago 31, height 5 ft. 10 in., complexion pale, sharp features, hair light brown, clean shaved, eyes grey; dress, light grey suit and cap, or may be wearing black coat and hard felt hat. A fitter; native of Birmingham. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. Information to Chief Constable Farndale, Bir- mingham. WILTSHIRE. 39.— Trowbridge ( County).— For indecently as- saulting a girl— WALTER EDE, age 22, height 5 ft. 5 in., stout build, complexion fair, hair brown, eyes grey, long nose, turns his toes outwards, and walks with shuffling gait; dress, blue serge jacket, cord trousers, military shirt, blue cloth cap, with patent leather peak, elastic side boots. Was wearing a gold watch and chain, monogram on it " L. J. S.," and had in her possession £ 30 in gold. She is suffering from melancholia, and it is feared some ill may have befallen her.
