All announcements for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communications upon them, should be. addressed to THE EDITOR OF IHE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SQOTLAND YARD, LONDON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 3. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted inone issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. i. In all cases where a rewdrd is offered the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions be clearly stated. • 6. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is nought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property, will be prominently inserted, with detailed particidars, at a cost of 15s. per portrait, and of" s. ( id. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, including the expense of engraving on wood. 6. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the. signature of an officerof not iess rank than Superintendent; and, if the name of such person be required to be inserted, and no warrant is in > orce against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as thi case may be. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property mud be guaranteed by an officerof not lets rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Cities and Boroughs therein, arranged in strict alphabetical order. 2.— Any additional copies of the GAZETTE beyond the number at present supplied will be forwarded on application in the form set forth in circular of the 7th of November, 1883. 3.— It is particularly requested that any com- plaints as to the non- delivery or of irregularity in the date of delivery of the POLICE GAZETTE, may be at once notified to the Editor. SPECIAL NOTICE. FUGITIVE OFFENDERS. A case has come under the noticc of the Editor, in which a person whose apprehension was sought in England, and who was described in the POLICE GAZETTE, gave himself up to the Colonial Police. The prosecutor declined to take any further action in the matter, but the case necessitated the dispatch of two telegrams, the cost of which had to be refunded by him. To avoid such expense, the Editor requests that if there is reason to believe that a fugitive offender is likely to go to the Colonies, and the prosecutor is unwilling to incur any expense with a view to obtain his surrender, a notification be made in the - communication sent to this Office to the effect that the offender is not to be arrested beyond the United Kingdom. The necessity for the adoption of such a course will be apparent from the fact that the POLICE GAZETTE is circulated in the Colonies. APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT. METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT. 1.— C. O. ( Convict Supervision Depart- ment)— For stealing, at Richmond, 31st ult.— a bay mare, 14 hands, mark in near knee, silver- plated harness, and a buggy gig, painted green, picked out black, 2 odd cushions ( one light, one dark- green), and whip. Licence- Holder EDWARD WYNDHAM MOORE, alias GEORGE WILLIAM ROSS, JOSEPH EDWARD MALLISON, EDWARD WILLIAM GASCOYNE MOORE, and GEORGE WYNDHAM MOORE, Office No. 2194- 6, age 31, height 5 ft. 11J in., complexion fair, hair dark brown, eyes grey, scar over right eye, front of left forearm, back of left thumb, each side of right lower arm, outside left hip, and inside left thigh, brown mole left side of chest, and left side of back, 2 boil marks on right buttock, 1 vaccination mark right arm, slightly pockmarked. Native of Ware, Hertfordshire; has been a clerk and a soldier. Sentenced at Dorchester Assizes 8th July, 1889 to 5 years penal servitude for forgery, for pay- ment of money. Liberated on 3rd licence 8th July, 1896. P. 280. 2.— A Division.— Woodcut portrait and descrip- tion of Dr. JACQUES STONERT, whose apprehen- sion is sought for obtaining by fraud £ 10 on 12th May last, and £ 1 10s. on 16tli May last, age 52, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion fair, hair, moustache and goatee white, eyes grey, wears eyeglasses, and a quantity of jewellery; dress, brown tweed suit, white collar and tie, soft white hat, brown shoes, or may be wearing mercantile surgeon's blue serge uniform with brass buttons ( anchor and laurels thereon), ser- pent and pole in gold lace on collar. He represents himself to be a doctor employed by the North German Lloyd and Royal Mail Steamship Company. May be found at first- class hotels and lodging- houses at fashionable watering places. Native of Baden- Baden. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. 3.— P Division.— For embezzlement— FRANK RITCHIE, age 38, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., complexion dark, hair dark brown ( turning grey), eyes grey ; scar left side forehead ; dress, blue serge jacket suit, black hard felt hat. Warrant issued. Information to be forwarded to the Metropolitan Police Office, New Scotland Yard, S. W. CITY OF LONDON. 4.— For fraud— MARY RUSSELL MURRAY, alias RUSSELL, SOMERVILLE, DOUGLAS, & c., age about 50, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., stout build, complexion, hair and eyes very dark ( turning grey), full face, of good appearance and address, dressed in black, generally stays at first- class hotels, and leaves without paying the bill. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. Information to Supt. McWilliam, 26, Old Jewry, E. C. BERKSHIRE. 5.— Newbury ( County).— On a warrant for steal- ing ( as bailee) a quantity of wearing apparel ( new).— Licence- Holder PHILLIP CATTERMOLE, alias HORATIO JAMES, HENRY SEWARD, HENRY BARNETT, HENRY JONES, and H. POPPLE WTELL, Office No. 48577, age 67, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion pale, hair grey ( thin on top, bald), eyes blue, clean shaven, full fair moustache ( turning grey), hair may be dyed black or brown, mole right temple and on right breast, boil scar back of neck, hairy chest, scar outside right uppor arm, small scars on forehead, apparently suffering from asthma, fond of drink; dressed, black frock coat, high silk hat, wearing a gold watch No. 361408 ; accompanied by ( supposed) son, age about 17, simple- looking, fair. Stated he was a retired sea captain. Left Newrbury 18th July, driving a lured black horse and dog- cart, which lie left at the Livery Stables opposite Hounslow Railway Station. Supposed same as described in GAZETTE, 19th June, 1896, Case 99. Sentenced at Middlesex Sessions, 20th February, 18S8, to 10 years penal servitude for larceny. Licenced 23rd August, 1S95. D. J. O. 395. Information to Supt. Robotham, Newbury. 6.— Maidenhead ( Borough).— For embezzling 21s.— JOHN WILLIAM BOURNE, age 42, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion sallow, hair dark, moustache dark brown, eyes hazel, scars and recent cut on head; dress, old brown coat, dirty grey trousers, dark grey peak cap. A rag sorter. Warrant issued. 7.— Maidenhead ( Borough).— For stealing, 9th ult., 60 pictures, 27 photographic views, and 6 clocks— JACOB G. SCHUMAN, a Russian Jew, age about 35, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., complexion fair, hair and moustache dark sandy, eyes blue ( sunken); dress, dark shabby clothes, high hat ( sometimes wears a cap). A traveller. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Taylor, Maidenhead. 2 T H E POLICE GAZETTE. 8.— Reading ( Borough).— For stealing, 30th ult.— A bay cob, 14 hands, white star on forehead, mane partly cut, short tail, in good condition; a four- wheeled dog- cart, oak stained body, black wheels, lined with broad brown stripes, " Lodson, Enfield," on wheel caps, brass handled brake, 2 brown cushions, 1 wire and 1 india- rubber mat, 1 black waterproof apron, drab lining, a new leather- handle whip, " Charles Barnes " engraved on 2 of the ferrules ; a set brass- mounted black leather harness, except tho pad, which is silver mounted ; 1 black overcoat, with velvet collar ; 1 lady's gold ring, with hair in centre— A MAN, age 26 to 28, height 5 ft. 8 in., rather stout build, round face, slight dark moustache; dress, dark tweed coat and vest, light trousers, blue cloth cap, brown boots, wore a silver ring, " Mizpah " engraved thereon, and carried a sword walking- stick. Stated he was a detective. ' Warrant issued. Information to Head Constable Tewsley, Reading. CHESHIRE. 9.— Middlewich ( County).— For stealing £ 14, at Northwich— MARY LARKIN, age about 21, height 5 ft. 2 in., stout build, complexion dark, hair dark brown ; dress, dark green dress, black and white sailor hat. Was employed as domestic servant, absconded 3rd inst. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Large, Middlewich. DENBIGHSHIRE. 10.— Wrexham ( County).— For assault on his wife, 30th ult.— JOHN BROWN, age about 50, height about 5 ft. 7 in., hair and whiskers ( shaggy) turning grey, cast in eyes, pcculiar- looking, and partially blind; dress, blue serge suit, soft black hat, lace boots. A hardware and basket dealer. May be found at commercial hotels. Warrant issued. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Jones, Wrexham. ESSEX. 11.— Brentwood ( County). — For inflicting grievous bodily harm, on 14 th ult.— ELLEN SMITH, age about 30, height about 5 ft., complexion pale, hair dark ; dress, dark clothes, dark straw hat. A pedlar. Tramps the country accompanied by her husband, and carries a basket, with curved top. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Allen, Brentwood. 12.— Chelmsford ( County). — For obtaining 9s by fraud — THOMAS NELSON, late of W'ick- ford, Essex, age 18, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 in., complexion fair, ' hair light brown, right arm deformed. Warrant issued. 13.— Chelmsford ( County).— For larceny at Great Leighs, on 28th May last — JOHN PARSLEY, 60, White Hart Street, Kenning ton, London, S. E., age 32, height, 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion dark, rather full face, hair and mous- tache light brown ; dress, dark brown suit, black hard felt hat. A flower- seller; travels the country with a small chestnut pony, wearing white ear- caps, with blue tassels on top, and a light cart, with white calico cover. Warrant issued. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Somerset, Chelmsford. rusty brake, hammock saddle— A MAN, age about 30, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, moustache light; dress, uniform of the King's Royal Rifles. Information to Supt. Felton, Winchester. HAMPSHIRE. 14.— Southampton ( Borough).— A. E. PETTY, Case No. 26, 31st ult., not to be arrested. Warrant withdrawn. 15.— Southampton ( Borough).— For obtaining £ 25 by fraud— DONALD FRASER ( supposed false) age about 30, height 5 ft. 6 in., sunburnt, heavy brown moustache; dres3, blue cloth morning suit, soft felt hat, brown shoes, red tie, wore a thick double gold chain, with pyramid shape pendant, of gentle- manly appearance. A telegram was received by a local firm of solicitors, apparently from their London agents, advising them that the above, a nephew of a client, had arrived from abroad, and would call, and requested that £ 20 or £ 25 might be advanced. The sum paid included four £ 5 Bank of England notes from the Nos. 7380, 81, 82, 83, 84, 85, 86, 88, 89. Warrant issued. 16.— Southampton ( Boough). — For stealing 28th ult.— A " Falcon" safety bicycle, diamond frame, 1893 pattern, " Beeston " oat tyre to back wheel, smooth tyre to front, direct butted spokes, round cranks, roller chain, weight about 36 lbs., no brake or mudguard— A MAN, age about 19, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion fair, wearing dark blue tennis jacket, with white piping. Information to the Chief Constable, Southampton 17.— Winchester ( City). — For stealing, 31st ult.— A pneumatic safety bicycle, new front tyre with non- slipping band, Iarf. e pitch on back tyre two spoke? broken in back wheels, cork handles HERTFORDSHIRE. 18.— Watford ( County).— For larcsny ( bailee) HARRY PALMER, age about 5 ft. 7 in., complexion dark, hair ( bald on top) and moustache black, eyes dark brown, one upper front tooth stopped with gold, speaks with West Country accent; dress, brown morning coat suit. Warrant issued. Information to Captain Wymer, Deputy- Chief Con- stable, Watford. KENT. 19.— Sandgate ( County).— For non- appearance to a summons for using threats— WILLIAM WOOD, age 38, height 5 ft. 5 J in., complexion fresh, hair light brown, eyes blue, supposed scar on nose; dress, dark grey suit, Oxford mixture shirt, white collar, black necktie, dark brown socks, light grey cap, lace boots, is addicted to drink. A plumber, painter and house decorator. Native of Sandgate. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Waghorn, Sandgate. 20.— Canterbury ( City).— For abandoning her infant child, 14th ult— ELIZABETH HOSKINS, age 28 to 30, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 in., complexion and hair dark, eyes brown, 2 pock marks on forehead, mole back of neck ; dress, black serge dress, trimmed with beads on sleeves and front of bodice, black straw hat, turned up at sides, trimmed black ribbon, 3 black feather tips and snowdrops ; may be wearing a three- quarter black jacket trimmed black braid. Is accompanied by a man, age 36, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion, hair, and heavy moustache dark, eyes blue; dress, rough blue serge suit, black hard felt hat. An engineer. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Farmery, Canter- bury. LANCASHIRE. £ 2 REWARD. 21.— Chorley ( County).— Portrait and descrip- tion of JAMES OLLERTON, whose apprehension is sought for non- payment of maintenance arrears, age 53, height 5 ft. 9 in., stout build, complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes hazel. Was last seen at Bol- ton a few weeks ago. Calls on publicans to fit and repair beer engines. Native of Chorley. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Norris, Chorley, by whom the above reward will be paid for the apprehension of Ollerton. 22.— Salford ( Borough).— For failing to report— Licence- Holder FRANK FOLEY, alias VICTOR SEYMOUR and WILLIAM COllDUE, Office No 1817- 6, age 34, height 5 ft. 5 § in., complexion dark hair dark brown, eyes grey; scar right side bridge of nose, back of right thumb, front of right forearm, and base of left thumb, boil scar right side of back, burn scar inside left forearm ; mole left side of neck, tailor, and native of Bideford, Devon. Sentenced at Manchester City Sessions, 4th February, 1892, to 5 years' penal servitude, and 3 years' police super- vision, for larceny. Licensed 5th June, 1896 G. L. S. 1128. Information to the Chief Constable, Town Hall Salford, Lancashire. 23.— Liverpool ( City).— For failing to report Licence- Holder ANN JANE MOSS, Office No. 48553 age 37, height 4 ft. 10 in., complexion pale, hair auburn, eyes brown, mole on right cheek, left arm has been broken, deep scar on left wrist, lost several upper teeth, face pockmarked; native of Ormskirk, Sentenced at Liverpool Assizes, 7th December, 1888 to 10 years' penal servitude for manslaughter. LINCOLNSHIRE. 24.— Boston ( Borough).— For obtaining money by false prctences, 18th June.— ARTHUR MUS- GRAVE, age 27, height 5 ft. 8J in., slight build, complexion fresh, sharp features, hair dark brown, slight moustache, eyes grey. A wood carver;, native of Wragby or Partney, Lincolnshire. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Wyse, Boston. MONMOUTHSHIRE. 25.— Newport ( Borough).— For embezzlement— ALFRED SPENCER, age 34, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., slight build, complexion sallow, hair and moustache dark brown, rather long flat face, eyes grev. Has partly lost the use of left arm, owing to bone of elbow being taken out; dress, dark coat and vest, dark grey trousers, black bowler hat. A clerk, and brewer's, traveller. Native of Newport. Absconded 1st inst. May endeavour to leave the country. Warrant issued. Information to Head Constable Sinclair, Newport. NORTHAMPTONSHIRE. 26.— Northampton ( Borough)— For obtaining food and lodgings by false pretences, on 17th and 18th inst.— A MAN, age about 35, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in. complexion and hair dark; dress, dark coat and vest' grey trousers, hard felt hat. Stated he was employed by the Telegraph Department repairing the lines. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Mardlin, North- ampton. NOTTINGHAMSHIRE. 27.— Newark ( Borough.)— For stealing wearing apparel, including a new brown suit— IIARRY RAYNOR, age 35, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion pale, hair dark brown, eagle tattooed on chest, man and woman left arm, bracelet left wrist, bird on right forearm. Was invalided from India, and subsequently dis- charged from the Derbyshire Regiment, about 4 years ago, suffering from heart disease. He after- wards joined the 2nd Battalion Lincolnshire Regi- ment, from which he was discharged about August last, at Woolwich, in consequence of injury to right first finger. Has since been employed as potman at public- houses in Portobello Road and Notting Hill, London. Information to Chief Constable Challen, Newark. 28.- Nottingham ( Borough). — For failing to report— Licence- Holder THOMAS EATON, alias JAMES RAYNOR, office No. 1015- 6, age 32, height 5 ft. 8J in., complexion pale, hair dark brown, eyes blue, brown mole left cheek, and left top of back crossed flags centre of chest, crossed flags, sailor' anchor, and double triangle on left forearm, bracelet left wrist, E T outside right forearm, heart surrounded by 2 wreaths back of right forearm, heart, LOVE, and knot centre front of right forearm, crossed flags inside right leg, cross with wreath inside left calf, bracelet left instep, and other tattoo marks, scar outside left forearm, inside and front of right knee, 1 outside right leg, and hollow of left foot. Sentenced at Northampton Borough Sessions, 5th January, 1894, to 3 years' penal servitude, and 2 years' police supervision, for stealing books, etc. Licensed 3rd April, 1896. W 5. PEMBROKESHIRE 29.— Haverfordwest ( County).— For obtaining goods by false pretences— JOHN JONES, age 28 to 30, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., complexion dark, hair dark brown, small moustache dark, smart appear- ance ; dress, when last seen, grey morning coat, vest, and trousers, black bowler hat. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable of Pembroke- shire, Haverfordwest. SHROPSHIRE. 30.— Oswestry ( Borough). — For stealing a quantity of furniture and wearing apparel, in July, 1895— WILLIAM HAYWARD, age about 31, height about 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fair, hair light. A groom; supposed native of Market Drayton, Shrop shire. May seek employment at horsebreaker's, livery, or hunting stables. Warrant issued. 31 — Oswestry ( Borough).— For forgery, on 17th August, 1895— JANE PARRY. WILLIAMS, age 23, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion pale, hair brown, eyes ( large) grey, long face, rather large ears. A bar FRIDAY, AUGUST 14, 1896. Warrant issued. 32.— Oswestry ( Borough).— For deserting his child on 13th July, 1895, leaving it chargeable to the Union— EDWIN THOMAS, age about 40, height about 5 ft. 8 in., complexion fresh, pock- marked, Slarge eyes which have rather a wild appearance when he is spoken to, walks erect. A labourer. Has been a lamp- lighter, and may seek employment at gas or public works. Wairant issued. Information to Supt. Langford, Oswestry. SOMERSETSHIRE. 33.— Bath ( City).— For obtaining food and lodgings by false pretences, between 20th and 27th June.— ALBERT BRAIN ( supposed false), age about 23, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., hair and rather heavy mous- tache light, eyes blue; dress, when last seen, dark grey jacket and vest, grey striped or blue trousers, dark blue tie, black bowler hat, lace boots. He took lodgings, stating he was a compositor, and was employed at a looal newspaper office. Warrant issued. Information to Lieut.- Colonel Gwyn, Chief Con- stable, Bath. STAFFORDSHIRE. 34.— Burslem ( County).— For stealing, 7th ult., an Anglo- German concertina, steel reeds, 20 keys, in light polished box, brass handle at top— JOHN HALL, age 24, height 5 ft. 4J in., complexion fresh, hair light brown, eyes hazel, is rather short- sighted, • scar outside corner of left eye- brow, abscess scar left • of mouth, monument, five dots, J. H., cross- flags, and flower- pot tattooed outside left forearm, anchor and star inside left forearm, ship up- side- down left muscle; dress, black coat and vest, moleskin trousers, red muffler, brown cap, low shoes. May be found playing the concertina at public- houses. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Supt. Hill, Burslem. 35.— Longton ( County).— For perjury on 21st April last— NATHAN SHERMAN, a Jew, late of 17, Trafalgar- street, Manchester, age 25, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion fair, hair ( inclined to curl) and moustache light, eyes blue; dress, slate- coloured jacket suit, brown hat. Was committed for trial at Staffordshire Assizes and admitted to bail, but failed to appear on the 22nd ult. A traveller. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Bakewell, Longton. 36.- - Stone ( County).— For obtaining food and lodgings by false pretences, 13th ult.— A. H. GREEN- WOOD, age about 35, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 ins., com- plexion and hair dark, clean shaved, eyes brown; dressed as a clergyman. A native of Market Dray- ton. Sentenced 1st January, 1894, at Cambridge Borough Sessions to six months' imprisonment for a similar offence. Wan- ant issued. Information to Supt. Bishop, Stone.
