All announcements for insertion in the PoLICB GAZETTE, and all communications upon them should be addressed to THE EDITOE OF THB POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YABD, LAYDON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the I'OLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 0 Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4 In all cases where a reward is offered the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions be clearly stated. 5 Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property, will be prominently inserted, with detailed particulars, at a cost of 15s. per portrait, and of 7s. 6d. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, including the expense i f engraving on wood. < 5 Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by thesignature nf an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and, if the name of such person be required to be inserted, and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. <] Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank thm Tnsvertor. or nnalatrovs thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and arj alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases, the officer signing the request for insertion of any announcement, will be wholly responsible for any proceedings whuh may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one tide of the paper only, be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All paymentt must be in advance, either at the office, Few Scotland Yard, by cheque, crossed " Drummond <$• Co.," Post Office Order payable at Parliament Street, Postal Order, or in Stamps. 13. Advertisements are accepted for the POLICE GAZETTE through Mr. James Willing, 125, Strand, London, the sole Agent, who will furnish the rates on application. 14. Any additional copies of the GAZETTE beyond the number at present supplied will be forwarded on application in the form set forth in circular of the pth of November, 1883. 3.— It is particularly requested that any com- plaints as to the non- delivery or of irregularity in the date of delivery of the POLICE GAZETTE, may be at once notified to the Editor. APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT. The following is a copy of the order which governs the circulation, by the Metropolitan Police, of advertisements, or reward bills, for the discovery of property or the detec- tion of crime. The Editor inserts it, in hope of preventing delays which sometimes occur in publishing such notices, on account of their not being in accordance with the regu- lations in force in the Metropolis :— 1. Printed hand- bills, or other advertisements, offering a reward for the discovery of property or the detection of crime, whether printed and issued by the Metropolitan Police, or distributed and exhibited, with the sanction of the Commissioners, on the application of private persons, or of the Police of any County or Borough, must be clearly expressed in relation to the following points— ( a) The amount of the reward. ( ib) The conditions on which it is payable. ( c) The person by whom it will be paid. ( d) That the name and address of the printer appear thereon. 2. No expression must be used in such an advertise- ment, in relation to property stolen, or criminally taken or disposed of, holding out any expectation that the reward will be paid on its return without the offender being brought to trial, or without enquiry. NOTE.— There are 180 Stations of the Metropolitan Police Force at which Notices can be posted. METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT. 1.— A Division. — For obtaining £ 10 12th May last, and f I 10s. on 16th May last, by fraud— DR. JACQUES STONERT, age 52, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion fair, hair, moustache and goatee whit a, eyes grey, wears eyeglasses, aud a quantity of jewellery; dress, brown tweed suit, white collar and tie, white Trilby hat, brown shoes, or may be wearing blue serge mercantile surgeon's uniform with brass buttons ( anchor and laurels thereon), serpent and pole in gold lies on collar. He represents himself to be a doctor on the North German Lloyd and Royal Mail Steamship Company. May be fonnd at first- class hotels and lodging- houses at fasbionab'. e watering places. Warrant issued. 2.— C Division.— For stealing, 7th in3t., from an hotel— 1 small jewel box, 12 inches by 4, green colour; 1 lady's long gold neck- chain, set sapphires and pearls; 1 very small diamond watch, with safety- pin attached, " Tiffany & Co., New York " on works; 1 peail chain bracelet ( pear- shape), set sapphires and diamonds; 1 gold clasp, with snake's head, set diamonds; 1 gold clasp, with snake's head, set diamonds and rubies ; 1 gold knife and pencil combined, small gold neckchain attached ; 1 paiisy brooch, enamelled ; 1 small gold brooch, set with a miniature; 1 brooch, set brilliants, ruby cross in centre; 1 large silver belt buckle; 1 small gold ditto; I small gold ditto, set brilliants; 1 small silver clasp, set brilliants; 1 gold scarf pin, enamelled, shape of yacht flag; 1 miniature photo- graph of Marie Antoinette ; 10 £ 5 Bank of England notes; and a letter of credit on Morgan's Bank, Broad- street — THOMAS SHIRLEY ( supposed false), age 30, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., complexion fair, hair light brown, slight light moustache; dress, black frock coat, light trousers, high silk hat; of good appearance and address. Supposed an American. 3.— D Division. — For stealing, 28th ult, a light brown cloth jacket and £ 2 10s. — MARY CONSTANCE DOBSON, age 18, height 5 ft. 2 in., stout build, complexion and hair dark, eyes brown, right shoulder deformed; dress, black skirt and jersey, large black straw hat trimmed blue flowers and satin ribbon A native of Stow market. Warrant issued. Information to be forwarded to the Metropolitan Police Office, New Scotland Yard, S. W. and Telegraph Chambers, Telegraph- street, E. C., whose apprehension is sought for forging and utter- CITY OF LONDON. 4. — Portrait aDd description of ALBERT WALTER COUNTER ( see Case No. 3, 8th May last), late of 18, Eddiscombe- road, Fulham, S. W., ing a cheque for £ 370, age about 23, height 5 ft. 8 in , complexion fair, h^ ir and moustache light; dress, dark frock coat, black- and- white check trousers, dark reoktie, silk hat, sometimes wears grey tweed suit, cip to match, coat with long skirts, or blue serge jacket suit, or brown suit, black or brown felt hat « . May have with him a crocodile skin kit- bag, " J. W. Allen, 37, Strand," stamped inside frame, and a long drab Newmarket overcoat, velvi t collar, done up in straps with umbrella and walking- stick. Latterly a stockbroker's clerk, and has served an apprenticeship as electrical engineer. Has assumed names of Gordon SLute, Shute, Clair, ar. d Royal. Is fond of boating and cycling, and ar- sociatin* with people of good position. Left Readirg on 30th ult. May endeavour to leave the country. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the Unite! BERKSHIRE. 5. — Wantage ( County). — For stealing £ 1 14s. 8^ 1.— FREDERICK JENKINS, age about 34, height 5 ft. 2 or 3 in., complexion sallow, hair and eyes brown, full face, thick lips; dress, dark tweed jacket and vest, light brown striped tweed trousers ( with stains on legs). Usually works in racing stables. Supposed to be a Welshman. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Molsher, Wantage. CHESHIRE. 6.— Stalybridge ( Borough). — For embezz'r- ment— GEORGE JEPSON, age 40, height 5 ft. 4 2 T H E POLICE GAZETTE. DORSETSHIRE. 7.— Shaftesbury ( County). — For stealing, 20th ult., painters' tools ( recovered), and a pair of paperhanger's scissors ( recently ground) — FRED WILLS, alias SMITH ( supposed false), age 50, height 5 ft. 2 or 3 in., hair, whiskers, and moustache dark ( turning grey), head and body of man tattooed on chest, speaks with London accent; dress, black coat and vest, brown small striped trousers, brown cap, military boots. A tramping painter or rough carpenter. Left Shaftesbury on 21st nit. Warrant issued. Information to Inspector Elford, Shaftesbury. age about 50, height 5 ft. 10 in., stout build, com- plexion fresh, full f* ce, hair inclined to sandy, slight moustache ginger, eyes blue; dress, red- and- blue jersey, striped trousers, blue neckerchief, white straw hat with wide brim. A horse- dealer. Native of Bury St. Edmunds. Travels the country with a van painted browa, with red lines on panels, " William Greaves, Bury St. Edmunds, Suffolk," in white letters over front; accompanied by a man with a chocolate- coloured van, several horses, a greyhound bitch with 2 pups, and a black retriever dog- Warrant issued. Reynolds, Hitchin. 15.— Watford ( County).— For larceny ( bailee) — HARRY PALMER, age about 40, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion dark, hair ( bald on top) and mous tache black, eyes dark brown. Has a gold- stopped tooth in upper jaw. Speaks with West country accent; dress, brown suit, morning coat, white tie, laco boots. Warrant issued. Information to Inspector Turner, Watford. engraved in case— JAMES SINCLAIR, age 38 to 40, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion and hair dark, eyes ( full) brown, thick lips, lame, and generally carries a walking stick ; dress, dark coat and vest, supposed light stripe trousers, black bowler hat, light lace boots ( one has thick heel). A native of Glasgow. Warrant issued. 22.— Tredegar ( Oownty).— For stealing a Wal- tham lever watch, flaw iu glass; a silver curb- pattein chain, jubilee shilling attached; and a brown tweed suit ( double- breasted jacket) — AUSTIN HEGERTON ( supposed false), age about 50, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., complexion fresh, hair ( turning grey) sandy, eyes grey, tattoo marks on fingers; dress, dark grey, or the stolen suit, black soft hat, lace boots; carried a mackintosh. Appearance of a fitter or painter. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Allen, Tredegar. ESSEX. 8.— Colchester ( County).— Fcr stealing, 30th ult., at Marks Tey, a cart colt ( recovered)— Two men: 1st, MORRIS, alias MORRIS COOPER, age 30 to 35, height 5 ft. 9 in., hair ( cut very short), monstache, and small side whiskers light; wore long dark overcoat, black hard felt hat, supposed native of Stratford, London. 2nd, A MAN, supposed known by nickname " EASY," age 18 to 20, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., rather stout, hair and moustache dark ; dressed in dark clothes, light cap. Horse dealers. Had with them a square built trade cart painted dark, rather low, brass caps on wheels, " Travis, Builder, London " thereon, a grey horse, and a blue roan cob. Warrant issued. Ackers, Colchester. 9. — Saffron Walden ( County). — For embezzlement, on 1st ult.— GEORGE BASSETT, age 28, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion very pale, hair light, very little hair on face. Has never shaved. Walks with a swinging gait, stoops slightly; dress ( supposed) dark clothes. A native of Saffron Walden. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Pryke, Saffron Walden. KENT. 16. — Dartford ( County). — For stealing, 25th ult., from a jeweller's shop, 3 18- carat gold keeper rings, all chased ( 2 weigh dwts. each, the other 4 dwts.)— A MAN, age about 40, height ft. 7 in., rather full face, side whiskers and mous- tache brown ; dress, dark coat aud vest, black hard felt hat. He went to a shop, taking 5 or 6 stones, and made enquiries about having them set in a ring, he then asked for the above rings, on the pretence of taking them to a friend who was going abroad, from which to choose one. Information to Supt. Webster, Dartford. GLAMORGANSHIRE. 10.— Cardiff ( Borough).— For stealing 1st inst., a gold watch and money— THOMAS SIMPSON RODERICK, age 16£, height 5 ft. 2 in., slight build, complexion dark, hair and eyes brown; dress, pepper and salt colour jacket suit, light tweed cap biown shoes, all new; a boy ( 1st Class), belong- ing to H. M. S. " Lion," from which ship he is a deserter. Warrant issued. 11.— Cardiff ( Borough)— For abduction and having carnal knowledge of a girl under the age of 16, 2nd ult — TREGENNIS JONES, alias TIM or TOM JONES, age 18, height about 5 ft. 1 in., slight build, complexion fair, long thin face, hair and small moustache light, heavy eyebrows light, eyes ( small) grey, tattooed on right arm, cut scar under one eye; dress, blue jacket and vest, dark trousers, blue cloth peak cap. A barber, snpposed to be tramping the country; native of Chepstow. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. Information to Head Constable McKenzie, Car- diff. LEICESTERSHIRE. 17. — Leicester ( Borough). — For embezzle- ment— ISAAC DUCKWORTH, a clerk, age 22, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 ins., complexion pale, hair dark brown, slight light moustache, eyes blue, decayed teeth; wearing black jacket and vest. Warrant issued. 18.— Leicester ( Borough). — For stealing £ 3,1 22nd ult.— BERT TAYLOR, age about 26, height I ft. 2 or 3 in., slight build, complexion fair, hair light brown, moustache light; dress, light suit, silk hat. Stated he was a doctor. Information to the Chief Constable, Town Hall, Leicester. HAMPSHIRE. 12.— Portsmouth ( Borough) KEATES and his WIFE, Case No. 14, 24th April last, not to be arrested. Cbarge withdrawn. HERTFORDSHIRE. 13.— Hertford ( County). — For deserting his wife and family— JOSEPH SAVILLE, age 29 height 5 ft. in., complexion dark, hair and eyes dark brown. A tailor ; native of Stepney, London Warrant is- ued. Information to Supt. Parish, Hertford. 14.— Hitch in ( Cr. unty).— For breacliof poundage by releasing horses impounded at Ickleford, on lOrh nit— WILLIAM. GREAVES, alias GASCOYNE NORFOLK. 23. — Holt ( County). — For stealing from his lodgings, an old- fashioned silver verge watch, with curb- pattern silver chain and compass attached— CHARLES HARDY, age 18 to 20, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion dark, hair dark brown, eyes brown, tattooed woman, palm tree and snake on right arm. Has lost upper front teeth; dress, brown knitted Jersey, blue cloth trousers, blue peak cap. Native of Docking, Norfolk. Warrant issued. Information to Inspector Willmott, Holt. LINCOLNSHIRE. 19.— Lincoln ( City).— For failing to report— License Holder GEORGE THOMPSON, alias WILLIAM WRAGG, WILLTAM MARRIOTT, and WILLIAM DAVENPORT, Office No. 2024— 6, age f. 0, height 5 ft. in., complexion fresh, hair turning grey, eye blue ( lost left), scar left side of head, over right eye, under left breast, top of left shoulder, and back of left forearm, bunion on 2nd joint of right big toe. An engine driver by trade. Sentenced at Leeds Assizes, 10th December, 1890, to 5 years penal servitude for larceny, and on 6th June, 1895, to 2 months hard labour, and license revoked at Sheffield City Police Court for loitering. Liberated on 2nd license, 23rd ult. F Q 1152. ALFRED CUNNINGHAM, age 38 to 40, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., complexion and hair dark, full face; dress, dark coat aud vest, dark brown trousers, hard felt hat. Militiamen; have just completed training with 3rd and 4th Battalions Lincolnshire Regiment. Left Grantham, 23rd ult., for Newark, accompanied by their wives, whose apprehpnsions are sought for larceny : 1st, the wife of John Cunningham, age 20 ; dress, light grey dress, large shawl, mixed colours— 2nd, wife of Alfred Cunningham, age 40, tall, thin dress, dark dress, grey shawl, light cap. They left at their lodgings a pawnticket for a box of tools, pledged on 6th March last with F. Clark & Sons, ?. 9. Listergate, Nottingham. Warrant issued. MONMOUTHSHIRE. 21.— Tredegar ( County).— For stealing ( bailee), a gold lever watch ( worn), " John Maddocks" NOTTINGHAMSHIRE. 24.— Newark ( Borough).— For neglecting his family— HENRY WILDS, age about 35, height 5 . ft. 5 or 6 in., complexion sallow, hair brown, 2 or 3 upper front teeth deficient, turns his toes out. A brewer's labourer. Native of Newark, which place he left on 29th February last. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Challen, Newark. OXFORDSHIRE. 25— Woodstock ( County).— For obtaining £ 10 by false pretences, at Kidlington, on 17th ult.— WILLIAM BISHOP, alias DIVER BISHOP, age about 28, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion pale, hair ( cut very short) and moustache dark, eyes supposed hazel; dress, dark coat and vest, strapped seams, blue plaid tight- fitting trousers, dark blue neckerchief, black hard felt hat. Hawks ferns in baskets, & c., about the country, and believed to be well known in Wantage, Swindon, Bath, Reading, Abingdon, and Oxford; last seen in Wantage on 25th ult, of which place he is supposed to be a native. Warrant issued. 26.— Woodstock ( County).— For stealing, 24th ult., at Kidlmgton— A lady's grey cloth open £ jacket, tailor made, lined blue - and - grey sho silk, one sletve slightly torn, 2 buttons inside to attach belt — ALICE BISHOP, alias RANDALL, age about 25, height 5 ft. 2 or 3 in., complexion fair, hair ( very frizzy in front) auburn, eyes ( supposed) blue; dress, grey skirt, grey double- breasted jacket to match, black hat with black or grey tips. May be wearing stolen jacket. Native of Oxford. Travels the country with William Bishop, described above. Warrant issued. Information to Inspector Sorrell, Woodstock. RADNORSHIRE. 27— Penybont ( County).— For stealing a silver English lever watcb, No. 10434, hunter case, glass aud cap missing, steel chain attached— A MAN, age 35 to 40, height about 5 ft. 5 in., complexion tanned,, hair dark ( turning grey), beard of about 3 weeks' growth; dress, dark jacket, small cord trousers ( torn at one knee) dark cap, strong lace boots; has some recent cuts on face and above one eye, supposed to have been working on the Steens Bridge and Bromyard Line. Information to the Chief Constable of Radnor- shire, Penybont. SHROPSHIRE. 28.— Church Stretton (( Wty).- For steal- | ing, 12th ult., at Rushbury, a lever watch, white, metal case, white- metal chain, curb pattern, key with I " John Binks, Bury New- road, Manchester," thereon, FRIDAY, JULY 10, 18S6. THE POLICE GAZETTE. 3 attached— SAMUEL HODGETTS, age 29, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion fresh, pimples on face, hair brown, eyes hazel j dress, grey cloth coat, black vest, brown cord trousers ( usually strapped below knees), brown cloth cap, lace boots. A farm labourer; native of Carter' ' s- lane, Quinton, Worcestershire. Information to Inspector Lewis, Church Stretton. 29.— LudlOW ( County).— Portrait and descrip- tion of License Holder CHARLES BROOKS alias CHARLES STANLEY SCALfcT, DAVID EDWARDS, JOHN LEA, and CHARLES FLETCHER, Office No. 199- 6, whose apprehension is sought for obtaining 3 horses by meaiis of worth- less cheques on the Birmingham and District Bank, Ludlow, on the 16th and 27th May, age 24( looks older), height 5 ft. 4 in., slight build, complexion fair, hair light brown, clean shaved, eyes brown, scar under left eye and right groin, large mole right shoulderblade ; dressed in lavender - and - brown tweed jacket and vest, cotton cord breeches and gaiters, black- and- whita straw hat, lace boots; native of Birmingham. He opened a corn factor's shop at Ludlow, in April last, and obtained goods to a large amount, which he removed to other places, and sold by public auction. Was seen in the district of Chipping Norton, on 2nd ult., where his brother was arrested. Was convicted at Birmingham, 27th October, 1890, aud sentenced on 2 charges to 12 months hard labour each ( concurrent) ; at Wolverhampton Ses- sions, 18th March, 1892, to 6 months hard labour for obtaining furniture by false pretences; and at Exetjr Sessions, 17th October, 1893, to 3 jears penal servitude for conspiracy and fraud. Licensed 16th January, 1896. T 463. ( See Case No. 58, 12th ult.) Information to Supt. Hayward, Ludlow. £ 1 REWARD. 30. — Wellington ( County). — For stealing, 20th ult., at Tong, a pneumatic safety bicycle, " The Diamond," 1895 pattern, No. 4372 below handle- bar, figure of a diamond on front, and the words 41 The Diamond " makers above, and " D. H. and S , Wolverhampton," below diamond frame, back tubes plated abont 3 in. from saddle, wheels same height, tangent spokes, lf- in. tyres, no mad- guards, rat- trap pedals, ends filed level, Carter's patent gear- case, lamp and bell attached— A MAN, age about 24, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., complexion fresh, slight moustache, very dark ; dress, black jacket and vest, dark trousers with red stripes across, white collar and blue bow tie, light cord cap ; wore silver watch chain with shilling and medal attached. Came from direction of Wolverhampton. Stated he worked at Clarke's Bicycle Works. Left behind an old cushion- tyre bicycle, No. 570 on handle- bar, half- diamond frame, no mud- guards, brake, or bandies, silver shield roughly soldered on front, with " Geo. Marshall, maker, Coventry, 1892 " thereon. The above reward will be paid by Thomas Fowler, Hawthorn- road, Blakenhall, Wolverhampton, for such information as will lead to the apprehension and conviction of the thief and recovery of the bicycle.
