All announcements for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communications upon them should be addressed to THE EDITOB OP THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YARD, LOVDON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force, 8, Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered the name and address of some person responsible for • the payment must be given, and the exact conditions be clearly stated. 5. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property, will be prominently inserted, with detailed particulars, at a cost of 15 « . per portrait, and of Is. 6d. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, including the expense of engraving on wood. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and, if the name of such person be required to be inserted, and no wan ant is in force against him, tie requisition must be signed hy the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank ffjnn T~* v° rtnr or mnl rtnnn* fhfiyofn. 8, 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and ait alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in the next issue. 10. In ail cases, the officer signing the request for insertion of any announcement, wilt be wholly respor'.' ble for any proceedings whuh may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwaraed so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only, be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, by cheque, crossed " Drummond Sf Co.," Post Office Order payable at Parliament Street, Postal Order, or in Stamps. 13. Advertisements are accepted for ME POLICE GAZETTE through Mr. James Willing, 125, Strand, London, the sole Agent, who will furnish the rates on application. 14. APPBEHENSIONS SOUGHT SPECIAL NOTICE. IDENTIFICATION OF PRISONERS. THE EDITOR requests that Chief Officers of Police, when forwarding for identifica- tion by the Metropolitan Police the Photo- graphs and descriptive forms of Persons in custody, will please see that the specific offence is stated, e. g. :— Stealing £ 1,000 from Bank ; stealing pair of boots from shop door; stealing bale of silk ; van unattended, & c., & c. This may often prove a ready means of recognition, and Judges have recently complained of the absence of euch particulars in dealing with previous convictions. Warrant issued. 2.— G Division. — For stealing, 20th inst., £ 50 — HENRY CHANEY, age 14, height 5 ft., complexion pale, hiir dark brown, ejes ( full) brown, 2 upper front teeth deficient, thick lips; dress, brown mixture jacket and vest, dark tweed trousers, cloth cap. A native of Bermondtey. May be found at Betchwortb, Surrey, or at some seaside town. Warrant issued. 3— P Division. — For embezzling £ 6 12*— JAMES AUSTIN, age 28, height 5 ft. 9 in., com- plexion very dark, hair and eyes dark, very red face, large Roman nose, receding mouth, large long chin ; dress, brown cloth suit and cap, lace boots. A native of Lewisham. May be employed fruit pick- ing in Kent. Warrant issued. Information to be forwarded to the Metropolitan Police Office, New Scotland Yard, S. W. CITY OF LONDON. 4.— For libel — JOHN IRVING, late of 13, Rostrevor Mansions, Rostrevor- road, Fulham, age 55, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., hair and moustache grey; dress, dark clothes, high silk hat. BERKSHIRE. 5.— Abingdon ( County). — For absconding from the Abingdon Union, 20th icst, and stealing £ 3 — PER3Y GREEN, age 62, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion florid, full f* ce, hair, beard, and mous- tache turning grey, eyes hazel, rather large nose, blight hesitation in speech; dress, dark plaid suit, Oxford 6hiit, lace shoes, all marked " Abingdon Union," and a soft Dudley hat, or may be wearing peak cap. Heath, Abingdon. 6— Newbury ( County). — For stealing, 15tk inst., a new Strad safety bicycle, " No. 1296 " om centre cf handle- bar, cork handles, tangent spokes, hollow rims, Beeston tyre ( oat patoern) on front wheel, " Edlin" pattern on back, new Strad shield on head, rat- trap pedals, toe- clips, no brake or mud- guards— A man who gave the name of BRIDGES, age about 20, height 5 ft 7 in., complexion and hair dark ; wearing dark clothes. Robotbam, Newbury. 7.— Reading ( Xorouoh) -- For obtaining money by false pretences- FREDERICK COPPIN, age about 30, height 5 ft. 10 or 11 iu., slight build, complexion fair, thin face, hollow cheeks, high cheekbones, hair ( inclined to sandy) li^ ht brown, has very large white teeth, of which he is fond of boasting ; dress, snuff- coloured check suit, and brown peak cap, may be wearing whipcjrd breeches, and brown Melton cloth gaiters. A h > rse- breaker; native of Ipswich. Will no doubt sejk employment at livery stables, dealers, hors9 - breeders, < fcc. Stated he was going to Aldershot, and thence to Edinburgh. 8— Reading ( Borough). — For stealing, 8th inst., a black pony, about 14 hands, 7 years, large warts round eyes and sheath; a spring " Rilli" car, blue, picked out yellow, maker, " Windover, London," blue cushions; a set of black brass- mounted harness; 1 waterproof rug, che- k lining; and a whip— A MAN, age 35 to 40, height about 5 ft. 10 ia., slight build, complexion fair, hair and slight moustache light, very bid teeth, wears eye- glasses; dress, bine jacket suit, black felt hat, brown kid gloves, brown epats. CARNARVONSHIRE. 9.— Conway( Oounty).— For stealing. 16thinst., 5 meat dishes ( recovered) — Expiree JOHV JONES, Offi : e No. 49057, age 4*, height 5 ft. 7 in., com- plexion fiesh, hair and eyes brown ( h*' d), crucifix, Maltese cross, English and FieLch fWs crossed, shamrock, and star on left forearm, bracelet on wrist, dot between right thumb and finger; dress, dark coat and vest, light brown trowsers, black hard felt bat. Sentenced at Chester City Sessions, 26th December, 1889, to 5 years penal servitude for shopbieakirg. Liberated on second licecsa 9th Dec., 1895. P 519. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Worked on the Portland breakwater about 2 years ago, and is now supposed to be working on the Manchester Ship Canal. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Simpson, Sherborne. DERBYSHIRE. £ 3 3s. REWARD. 11.— Alf reton ( County).— For stealing, 1st inst., at Oakerthorpe, a chestnut Welsh mare pony ( slightly mingled with roan hairs), dark patch on near side of rump, 3 years, about 13 hands, good action; a dark oak colour pony trap, opens behind to form back seat, maker, Brittain, Birmingham, iron foot- rest, green cushions, india- rubber mat, silver- mounted lamps, dealer's whip, " Lardner, London," on ferrule; black leather harness, silver- mounted, rush collar, repaired at bottom— A man known as CHARLIE, age about 30, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion, hair, and moustache dark, slouching gait; dress, dark coat and vest, striped trousers, grey cap, blue neckerchief, with white spots, heavy boots. The above reward will be paid by Mr. Samuel Barber, cattle dealer, Higham, for such information leading to the apprehension and conviction of the thief, and recovery of the property, or in proportion to that recovered. Eyre, Alfreton. 12.— Bel per ( County).— For rape, 26th ult.— CHARLES MARTIN, alias DUDLEY, age 48, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, moustache sandy, eyes brown, rather stiff legs, bald on one side of head, wearing black- and- brown check jacket, dark plaid vest, old blue scarf, dark plaid cap or soft hat, strong lace boots. A collier; native of Honsley- Woodhouse. May seek employ- ment as a bricklayer's labourer. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. McDonald, Belper. DEVONSHIRE. 13.— Exeter ( County).— JOHN LYSHON, Case No. 13, 1st ult., not to be arrested. Fine and costs have been paid. 14.— Totnes ( County). — WILLIAM JOHN DISTIN STEER ( see Case No. 15, 13th September last), not yet arrested. He has recently been seen in Wales, and will probably be found travelling from place to place castrating lambs, calves, & c. Information to Snpt. Ryall, Totnes. 15.— Barnstaple ( Borough). — On a warrant, for failing to report— Supervisee JAMES HILL, alias CHUGG, Office No. 49006, age 27, height 5 ft. 4£ in., complexion dark, hair dark brown, eyes brown, face oval, scar back of head, centre of top lip, on 3rd left finger, abscess scar right shoulder- blade, large wound left shin, lame left leg, varicose veins both legs. Native of Tavistock, Devon; by trade a labourer. Sentenced at Barnstaple Borough Quarter Sessions, 17th October, 1895, to 6 weeks hard labour and 4 years police supervision for fowl stealing. 907. Information to Chief Constable Eddy, Barnstaple. ESSEX. 18. — Chelmsford ( County). — W. H. STEWARD ( Case No. 99, 19th inst.), is also wanted for obtaining, by false pretences, 18th inst., a new English concertina, 48 keys, maker—" Lach- well," on label, very dark mahogany and light mahogany case, lined with violet plush, the leather clip for little finger on right side of instrument is slightly worn; a 12- bore hammerless gun, " Anson and Duley" action cross bolt, number 3248 on barrels and strap of guard, makers—" Leech & Son, Chelmsford," thereon, barrels steel blacked, black- and- white check cover, bound with brown leather, and 25 cartridges; 1 p^ ir new black leather button boots, size 8, spliced at sides, plain fronts; 1 pair new boots, without toe- caps, size 8; 1 pair lady's brown leather button boots, size 3^, piece patched on inside; 1 pair new glazed black leather button boots, size 7 ; and a new clock, with barometer " and thermometer, in walnut case, 7 in. high by 10 in. long, known as the H. A. C.— maker, Jughans, Germany. The pony, cart, & c., described in Case No. 99, 19th inst., have been recovered at Stratford. Warrant issued. FLINTSHIRE. 19.— Holywell ( County).— For stealing ( looking at apartments), 15th inst., at Rhyl, 1 lady's gold English lever watch, gold dial, steel hands, engraved case, maker—" Argent, Rhyl, No. 94716; 1 double- strand gold albert chain ; 1 lady's gold dress- ring, set turquoise and pearls ; I gentleman's 9- ct. gold signet ring, set blood- stone ; and a brown leather purse, containing 19s— TWO MEN: 1st, age 25, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion fresh, hair light, heavy mous- tache sandy; dress, brown suit, straw hat with black band. 2nd, age 19, height 5 ft. 5 in., slight build, complexion dark, hair black, 2 upper front teeth deficient. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Hughes, Holywell. DORSETSHIRE. 16.— Shaftesbury ( County). — For stealing, 20th inst., painters' tools ( recovered), and a pair of paperhanger's scissors ( recently ground) — FRED WILLS, alias SMITH ( supposed false), age 50, height 5 ft. 2 or 3 in., hair, whiskers, and moustache dark ( turning grey), head and body of man tattooed on chest, speaks with London accent; dress, black coat and vest, brown small striped trousers, brown cap, military boots. A tramping painter or rough carpenter. Left Shaftesbury on 21st inst. Warrant issued. Information to Inspector Elford, Shaftesbury. 17— Sherborne ( Covmty).— For deserting his children, at Yetminster, on 15th July, 1895, leaving them chargeable to the Sherborne Union— ERNEST JEFFORD, age 35, height about 5 ft. 9 in., com- FORFARSHIRE. 20. — Arbroath ( Burgh). — Portrait and description of WILLIAM STEWART, whose height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., slight build, complexion fresh, hair light brown, eyes blue, very red nose; dress, light jacket, dark trousors, cloth cap, white canvas shoes. An ironmonger's assistant; native of Surbiton. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Miller, Aldershot. 22.— Bitterne ( Cownty).— For deserting his wife and family, 16th April last, at Millbrook— THOMAS BARNETT MELMOTH, age 39, height about 5 ft. $ in., complexion fair, hair, slight side whiskers and moustache light brown, eyes grey; supposed wearing brown jacket and vest, light brown corduroy breeches and gaiters, black hard felt hat, brown boots. A native of Shillingstone, Dorset. May be found with low horse- copers. Supposed known at Hounslow and the Isle of Wight. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Matthews, Bitterne. 23.— Gosport ( County).— For stealing, 3rd inst., a lady's gold open- face geneva watch, No. 11105; 1 lady's gold double chain albert, with tassel at end; 1 square gold locket, chased ( glass and inside rims missing), and a gold watch- key attached— A man who gave the name of WILLIAM BATES, age about 34, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion fresh, hair light brown, clean shaved, eyes blue; dress ( when last seen), faded grey coat, dark check trousers ( worn), black hard felt hat. He travels the country hawking straw hats, dress- pieces, cloth, handker- chiefs, & c. Warrant issued. Information to Inspector Silver, Gosport, 24.— Winchester ( City).— For stealing, 8th inst.— 1 round towel, red stripe down side; 1 pink- and- white shirt; 1 chemise; 1 unbleached sheet, washed white, 3 yards long ; 5 old pillow slips ; I small bath towel; 1 black crape shawl, with fringe at bottom, torn in several places; 1 night- gown, with linen buttons on front; 1 under- vest, worn at bottom of sleeves; 1 white teaclotb ; 1 pink and blue ditto ; 3 pink and blue striped dusters— A man known as " MACK" and F. DURM ITT, age 28 to 30, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown ( several bald patches on head), moustache dark ; dress, black jacket and vest, dark trousers, white turn- down collar, black tie, black hard felt hat, lace boots ( much worn), wore the ribbon of the Egyptian medal and star, also the ribbon of the Humane Society's medal. Stated he was a native of Brighton. ( See Case No. 26.) Information to Supt. Felton, Winchester. 25.— Portsmouth ( Borough).— For obtaining food and lodgings by false pretences — JOHN ERNEST HARRISON, alias POYEY, age about 35 height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion, hair ( turning grey), moustache, and eyes ( prominent) dark, well built dress, blue jacket suit, hard felt hat. Warrant issued. 26.— Portsmouth ( Borough). — For stealing, 6th inst., 1 fawn colour covert coat, silk fawn lining, striped lining to sleeves, nearly new; 1 blue plain cloth overcoat, raised seams, velvet collar, plaid lining; 1 soldier's old blue serge coat, much worn— A MAN, age about 28, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., com- plexion fresh, bair brown, several bald patches on top of head, supposed clean shaved; dress, black frieze coat and vest, dirty light trousers, black hard hat, black tie; wears a piece of blue and white ribbon on vest. Has the appearance of a painter. Stated he came from Brighton, and was known by the name of " MACK," and at a common lodging- house gave the name of F. DURMITT. See CaseNo. 24). Information to the Chief Constable, Town Hall, Portsmouth. apprehension is sought for embezzling £ 1,200— Age 48, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., stout build, com- plexion fresh, full red face, hair ( very short) grey, heavy moustache ( turning grey), slight whiskers ; dress, when last seen, dark blue suit, hard felt hat. HAMPSHIRE. 21. — Aldershot ( County). — For stealing, 2nd inst., an " Orion" safety bicycle, No. 159, Dunlop pneumatic tyres, usual parts plated, " Orion" in gold letters on head, silver- plated " King of the Road" lamp, bell attached— ALBERT ALDERTON, age 15 ( looks older), HERTFORDSHIRE. 27.— Hertford ( County).— For stealing, between 1st and 3rd inst., a diimond frame safety bicycle, pneumatic tyres, ball bearings, rubb3r pedals, straight handles, tangent spokes, changeable gear, lamp and pump, makers, " Turner, Fellows & Co., Birmingham," and " J. Wakett, 81, St. Andrews- street, Hertford," on tube— GEORGE TINKLAR, alias A. CARBY, age 28, height 5 ft. in., com- plexion fresh, hair brown, moustache light, eyes grey. A stonemason. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Parish, Hertford. 28.— Hitchin ( County).— For breach of poundage, by releasing horses impounded at Ickle'ord, on 10th inst.— WILLIAM GREAVES, alias GASCJYNE, TUESDAY, JUNE 23. 1896. THE POLICE GAZETTE. 3 age about 50, height 5 ft. 10 in., stout build, com- plexion fresh, full face, hair inclined to sandy, slight moustache ginger, eyes blue; dreas, red- and- blue jersey, striped trousers, blue neckerchief, white straw hat with wide brim. A horse- dealer. Native of Bury St. Edmunds. Travels the country with a van painted brown, with red lines on panels, " William Greaves, Bury St. Edmunds, Suffolk," in white letters over front; accompanied by a man with a chocolate- coloured van, several horses, a greyhound bitch with 2 pups, and a black retriever dog. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Reynolds, Hitchin. 29.— Watford ( County).— For stealing, 5th ult, 4 pairs of men's boots— JOHN RAYMOND, late of Watford, age between 50 and 60, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion fresh, hair turning grey; respect- ably dressed. Warrant issued. Information to Capt. Wymer, Deputy Chief Con stable, Watford. 30.— St. Albans ( City).— For false pretences — A. CALLINGHAM, age about 30, height 5 ft. 7 in., heavy moustache, dark; dress, black or dark jacket and vest, striped trousers; a painter. Warrant issued. Information to Head Constable Blatch, St. Albans. height 5 ft. 2 or 3 in., complexion very dark; dress, old light dust- coat, cord trousers, red neckerchief, very dirty appearance. A tramp. Supposed to beloDg to Nottingham, to be known at most casual wards in England, and to have been previously convicted of housebreaking and other offences. Information to Supt. Wood, Spilsley. KENT. 31.— Canterbury ( City).— For stealing, 19th inst., 1 plasterer's laying- on trowel, marked •" W. H."; 1 bricklayer's club hammer, handle cracked close to head; 1 carpenter's hand saw ( 2 • or 3 teeth missing) ; 2 guaging trowels ; 1 two- joint steel rule ; 3 small tools in shspe of spoon; 1 car- penter's - i- in. chisel; 1 cold chisel— MOSS, age about 40, medium height, complexion fair, hair and moustache light, eyes protruding and bloodshot; dress, dark jacket, light trousers and vest, blue scarf, light cap. A plasterer. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Farmery, Canter- bury. 32.— Maidstone ( Borough).— For obtaining a • chegue for £ 5 by false prctences, on 1st inst.— A woman who gave the name of GERTRUDE FIELD, age about 37, height about 4 ft. 11 in., very stout build, complexion, hair ( cut short and curled in front) dark; dress, blue serge skirt, with 3 rows of black braid round bottom, light blouse, black tight- fitting jacket, brown straw hat, trimmed brown velvet and feathers. Of Jewish appearance Stated that her first husband kept a lodging- house at Worthing. Was accompanied by a man, whom she represented to be her husband, age 29, height 5 ft. 10 or 11 in., very thin build, complexion fair, hair and moustache light, large scar left temple, walks badly, as if suffering from rheumatism; dress, light suit, black hard felt hat. They too* lodgings on 28lh April last, and left on 2nd inst. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Mackintosh, Maidstone. NORFOLK. 36. — Holt ( County). — For stealing from his lodgings, an old- fashioned silver verge watch, with curb- pattern silver chain and compass attached— CHARLES HARDY, age 18 to 20, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion dark, luir dark brown, eyea brown, tattooed woman, palm tree and snake on right arm. Has lost upper front teeth; dress, brown knitted Jersey, blue cloth trousers, blue peak cap. Native of Docking, Norfolk. Warrant issued. Information to Inspector Willmott, Holt. NORTHUMBERLAND. 37.— Berwick- On- Tweed ( Borough). — For neglecting to maintain his family — THOMAS COONEY, age 40, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fresh, bair light, eyes blue, man tattooed on one arm, " T. C." on other. Native of Bsrwick- on- Tweed. Warrant issued. Information to Head Constable Garden, Berwick- on- Tweed. LANCASHIRE. 33.— Kirkham ( County).— For failing to report — Supervisee WILLIAM CANDLISH.
