/ PUBLISHED BY AUTHORITY. NEW SERIES. FRIDAY, JUNE 19, 1896. VOL. XIII., No. 1302 REG- ULATIONS. 1. All announcement* for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communications upon them should be addressed to TUB EDITOB OF THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YARD, LONDON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 3. Part iculars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions be clearly stated. 6. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property, will be prominently inserted, with detailed particulars, at a cost of\ bs. per portrait, and of 7s. 6d. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, including the expense of engraving on wood. 6. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and, if the name of such person be required to be inserted, and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Insvectnr. nr nnalnanns thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and as i alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases, the officer signing the request for insertion of any announcement, wilt be wholly respo* • ible for any proceedings whUh mag result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwaraed so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only, be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, by cheque, crossed " Drummond S( Co.," Post Office Order payable at Parliament Street, Postal Order, or in Stamps. 13. Advertisements are accepted for the POLICE GAZETTE through Mr. James Willing, 125, Strand, London, the sole Agent, who will furnish the rates on application. 14. SPECIAL NOTICE. IDENTIFICATION OP PRISONERS. THE EDITOR requests that Chief Officers of Police, when forwarding for identifica- tion by the Metropolitan Police the Photo- graphs and descriptive forms of Persons in custody, will please see that the specific offence is stated, e. g. :— Stealing £ 1,000 from Bank ; stealing pair of boots from shop door; stealing bale of silk ; van unattended, & c., & c. This may often prove a ready means of recognition, and Judges have recently complained of the absence of such particulars in dealing with previous convictions. APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT. METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT. 1. — E Division- — For stealing cheques — ALEXANDER STORER, alias ALEXANDER ROSS, age 43, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion fresh, hair, small side whiskers, and moustache dark brown, eyes grey, scar from sword cut on right cheek and bridge of Dose, small scar inside right thigh; dress, blue serge jacket, light vest, dark striped trousers, black hard felt hat, lace boots. Supposed native of E linburgh. He served in the French Army duriDg the Franco- Pruasiaa war. Warrant issued. 2.— J Division. — For obtaining £ 5 by false pretences — GEORGE BERTIE MESSENGER, age 32, height 5 ft. 8| in., complexion dark, hair dark brown, eyes hazel, no lobes to ears ; dress, blue melton reefer jacket and vest, black- and- white cheek trousers, light tweed cap, tan boots. Sup- posed native of Keswick. Warrant issued. 3. — M Division.— For embezzlement IAS. CHRISTOPHER BUTLER, age 23, height 5 ft. 8in., complexion ruddy, hair and eyes dark brown ; dregs, black jacket and vest, grey trousers, black bard felt hat. A traveller. May ba found at Sheffisld or Ulverstone. Warrant issued. 4. — v Division. — For stealing £ 45, 13th inst.— CHARLES BENNETT, age 18, height 5 ft. 6 in., slight build, complexion pale, slightly blotched, hair light, weak eyes ; dress, light suit, black- and- white straw hat. A native of Richmond, Surrey. Information to be forwarded to the Metropolitan Police Office, New Scotland Yard, S. W. CITY OF LONDON. 5.— For libel — JOHN IRVING, late of 13, Rostrevor Mansions, Rostrevor- road, Falhatn, age 55, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., hair and moustache grey; dress, dark clothes, high silk hat. Absconded 22nd inst. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. McWilliam, 26, Old Jewry, E. C. BEDFORDSHIRE. 6. — Luton ( Borough). — For embezzlement— T. WILLIAM T1BBITT, age 28, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion dark, hair dark brown, slight dark moustache, very thick bottom lip, which protrudes; dress, usually, short black coat, double- breasted vest, light trousers; occasionally wears spats. A corn and hay dealer's traveller ; native of Dunstable. Is fond of billiards. May be accompanied by a woman, age about 25, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., stylishly dressed. Warrant issued. BERKSHIRE. 7— Newbury ( County).— For stealing, 15th inst., a new Stiad safety bicycle, <; No. 1296" on rentre cf handle- bar, cork handles, tangent spokes, hoilow rims, Beeston tyre ( oat pattern) oa front wheel, " Edlin " pattern on back, new Strad shield on head, rat- trap pedals, toe- clips, no brake or mud- guards-— A man who gave the name of BRIDGES, age about 20, height 5 ft 7 in., complexion and hair dark ; wearing dark clothf s. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Robotbam, Newbury. 8— Reading ( Borough).— For stealing, 8th inst., a black pony, about 14 hands, 7 years, large warts round eyes and sheath; a spring " Ralli" ca", blue, picked out yellow, maker, " Windover, London," blue cushions ; a set of black brass- mounted harness ; 1 waterproof rug, cl 8 k lining; and a whip— A MAN, age 35 to 40, height about 5 ft. 10 in., slight build, complexion fair, hair and slight moustache light, very bid teeth, wears eye- glasses; dress, blue jacket suit, black felt hat, brown kid gloves, brown spats. Warrant issued. 9.— Reading ( Borough).— For obtaining money by false pretences— FREDERICK COPPIN, ago about 30, height 5 ft. 10 or 11 in., slight build, complexion fair, thin face, hollow cheeks, high cheekbones, hair ( inclined to sandy) light brown, has very large white teeth, of which he is fond of boasting; dress, snuff- coloured check suit, and brown peak cap, may be wearing whipcord breeches, and brown Melton cloth gaiters. A horse- breaker; native of Ipswich. Will no doubt seek employment at livery stables, dealers, horse - breeders, & c. Stated he was going to Alderahot, and thence to Edinburgh. Information to Head Constable Tewsley, Reading. CHESHIRE. 10. — Birkenhead ( County). — For highway robbery— WILLIAM FELL, age 26, height 5 ft. 10 in , slight build, complexion pale, hair brown, may have slight sandy moustache, rather long nose and features, stoops slightly, and is rather knock- kneed, lost tip of light index fiDger, is addicted to drink; dress, dark jacket, rough blue trousers, hard felt hat. A native of Sandbach. May seek employment at a coal wharf. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Large, Middlewich. 12.— Oakmere ( County).— For stealing ( bailee), a silver English lever watch— HENRY TAYLOR, a German, age 40 to 45, height 5 ft. 2 or 3 in., com- plexion fr6sh, hair, whiskers and moustache dark brown, walks lame, right leg being shorter than the left, rolls his eyes about when speaking, speaks broken English; dress, dark coat and vest, grey stripe trousers, black or blue cloth cap, low shoes. A watch and clock cleaner. Absconded 9th inst. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Johnson, Oakmere. CUMBERLAND. 13.— Penrith ( County).— For robbery with vio- lence, 28th ult.— A MAN, age 35, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion ruddy, hair and moustache light, bow- legged, speaks with slight Newcastle- upon- Tyne dialect; dress, black jacket and vest, grey trousers with bluish stripe, black stripe neckerchief, grey cap, lace boots. Supposed to bo a collier. Information to Supt. Hodgson, Penrith. DENBIGHSHIRE. 14.— Wrexham ( County).— For larceny ( bailee) — ELIZABETH EDWARDS, age 24, height about 5 ft. 4 in., hair ( cnt short on forehead) dark, has lost upper front teeth ; dress, white blouse, black skirt, black silk stockings with flower work, black sailor hat, black veil with white spots, low tan shoes. Warrant issued. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Jones, Wrexham. DERBYSHIRE. £ 3 3s. REWARD. 15.— Alf reton ( County).— For stealing, 1st inst., at Oakerthorpe, a chestnut Welsh mare pony ( slightly mingled with roan hairs), dark patch on near side of rump, 3 years, about 13 hands, good action; a dark oak colour pony trap, opens behind to form back seat, maker, Brittain, Birmingham, iron foot- rest, green cushions, india- rubber mat, silver- mounted lamps, dealer's whip, " Lardner, London," on ferrule; black leather harness, silver- mounted, rush collar, repaired at bottom— A man known as CHARLIE, age about 30, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion, hair, and moustache dark, slouching gait; dress, dark coat and vest, striped trousers, grey cap, blue neckerchief, with white spots, heavy boots. The above reward will be paid by Mr. Samuel Barber, cattle dealer, Higbam, for such information leading to the apprehension and conviction of the thief, and recovery of the property, or in proportion to that recovered. Eyre, Alfreton. 16.— Ashbourne ( County).— For bousebreakirg, 19th ult., at Hulland Ward, and stealing 1 silver watch, gold albert, and gold locket ( recovered) ; and 1 pair men's grey stockings— JOHN STAFFORD, alias CHARLES JOHNSON, JOHN JOHNSON, and JOHN ASTLE, age 60, height 5 ft. 3£ in., complexion fresh, hair ( turning grey) dark brown, eyes grey, 2 moles left side of neck, 1 on top of right shoulder, 1 on right side of back, 2 scars back of neck; walks lame, and turns his feet out; dress, drab slop, black cloth vest, light corduroy trousers, blue check shirt, red scarf, black soft hat, heavy lace boots. Has been employed as farm labourer. Native of Boyleston, Derbyshire. Information to Supt. Wheeldon, Ashbourne. 17.— Bel per ( County).— For rape, 26th ult.— CHARLES MARTIN, alias DUDLEY, age 48, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, moustache sandy, eyes brown, rather stiff legs, bald on one side of head, wearing black- and- brown check jacket, dark plaid vest, old blue scarf, dark plaid cap or soft hat, strong lace boots. A collier; native of Honsley- Woodhouse. May seek employ- ment as a bricklayer's labourer. Warrant issued. Information to Snpt. McDonald, Belper. DEVONSHIRE. 18.— Barnstaple ( Borough).— On a warrant, for failing to report — Supervisee JAMES HILL, alias CHUGG, Ofliae No. 49006, age 27, height 5 ft. 4i in., complexion dark, hair dark brown, eyes brown, face oval, ECU back of head, centre of top lip, on 3rd left finger, abscess scar right shoulder- blade, large wound left shin, lame left leg, varicose veins both legs. Native of Tavistock, Devon; by trade a labourer. Sentenced at Barnstaple Borough Quarter Sessions, 17th October, 1895, to 6 weeks hard labour and 4 years police supervision for fowl stealing. 907. Information to Chief Constable Eddy, Barnstaple. 19.— Devonport ( Borough).— For deserting his wife and child, leaving them chargeable to Stoke Damerel Union — FRANCIS WHITE, age 27, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion fair, hair dark brown, moustache light, eyes blue, " G. W." tattooed on one arm. Absconded 1st March last. Has been employed as rigger in H. M. Dockyard at Devonport, now supposed to be working in the neighbourhood of Dartmouth. Warrant issued. DORSETSHIRE. 20.— Sherborne ( County).— For deserting his children, at Yetminster, on 15th July, 1895, leaving them chargeable to the Sherborne Union— ERNEST JEFFORD, age 35, height about 5 ft. 9 in., com- plexion and hair dark. Has served in the Army. Worked on the Portland breakwater about 2 years ago, and is now supposed to be working on the Manchester Ship Canal. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Simpson, Sherborne. 21.— Weymouth ( Borough). — For larceny ( bailee), 15th ult.— FREDERICK HONEYBONE, age 29, height 5 ft. 11 in., stout build, complexion dark, full face, hair brown, eyes ( small) hazel, clean shaved, slightly round- shoaldered, has a wound on leg ( supposed right) which causes him to walk slightly lame; dress, blue jacket, grey vest, dark grey striped trousers, patched at knee3, hard felt hat or peak cap, light lace boots. Stays at common lodging houses. A labourer; may seek employment as a bricklayer or dock labourer, or may endeavour to go to sea. Supposed to be now at Southampton or Portsmouth. Wan ant issued. Information to Chief Constable Eacock, Wey- mouth. ESSEX. 22.— Saffron Walden ( County).— For stealing linen ( recovered)— ELLEN WICKS, age 31, height 5 ft. 2 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes hazel. A native of Saffron Walden. Has with her a child about 12 months old. Warrant issued. 23.— Saffron Walden ( County).— For leaving his children chargeable to the Saffron Walden Union — GEORGE WICKS, age 56, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 in., stout build, complexion inclined to fair, hair ( turn- ing grey) light browD, clean shaved, eyes supposed grey, scar bridge of nose ( apparently broken). A plasterer; native of Saffron Walden. Warrant issued. 24.— Saffron Walden ( County).— For leaving his wife chargeable to the Saffron Walden Union— HENRY JOHNS, age 34, height 5 ft. 8 in., com plexion, hair, full beard and moustache dark, eyes brown; dress, plaid suit, dark overcoat; of smart appearance. A bookbinder; native of Saffron Walden. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Pryke, Saffron Walden. FLINTSHIRE. 25.— Holywell ( County).— For stealing ( looking at apartments), 15th inst., at Rhyl, 1 lady's gold English lever watch, gold dial, steel hands, engraved case, maker—" Argent, Rhyl, No. 94716; 1 double- strand gold albert chain ; 1 lady's gold dress- ring, set turquoise and pearls; 1 gentleman's 9- ct. gold signet ring, set blood- stone; and a brown leather purse, containing 19s— TWO MEN: 1st, age 25, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion fresh, hair light, heavy mous- tache sandy; dress, brown suit, straw hat with black band. 2nd, age 19, height 5 ft. 5 in., slight build, complexion dark, hair black, 2 upper front teeth deficient. FORFARSHIRE. 26. — Arbroath ( Burgh). — Portrait and description of WILLIAM STEWART, whose. apprehension is sought for embezzling £ 1,200— Age 48, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., stout build, com- plexion fresh, full red face, hair ( very short) grey,, heavy moustache ( turning grey), slight whiskers ; dress, when last seen, dark blue suit, hard felt hat. A yam salesman. May endeavour to go abroad. Wbrrant issued. Information to Chief Constable M'Neill, Arbroath. GLAMORGANSHIRE. 27.— Cardiff ( Borough).— For stealing, 26th ult.,. 1 blue- black worsted coat and vest; 1 pair Scotch tweed trousers, and £ 5 — MORRIS SMITH, a marine engineer, age 24, short, slight build, hair ( curly) and comploxion dark, clean shaved; dress, pilot cloth reefer jacket, blue serge vest and trousers, hard felt hat, new lace boots, carried a black leather portmanteau. May endeavour to go to sea. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. Information to Head Constable McKenzie, Cardiff, GLOUCESTERSHIRE. 28.— Fishponds ( County). — For stealing a purse and £ 6 10s., at Horfield, Bristol— ALBERT EDWARD BRAIN, age 22, height 5 ft. 8 in., slight build, complexion fair, hair and heavy moustache light brown, eyes blue; dress, dark coat and vest, navy- blue trousers, black hard felt hat, Oxford shoes. HAMPSHIRE. 29. — Aldershot ( County). — For stealing.. 2nd inst., an " Orion" safety bicycle, No. 159, Dunlop pneumatic tyres, usual parts plated, " Orion" in gold letters on head, silver- plated " King of the Road" lamp, bell attached— ALBERT ALDERTON, age 15 ( looks older), height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., slight build, complexion fresh, hair light brown, eyes blue, very red nose; dress, light jacket, dark trousers, cloth cap, white canvas shoes. An ironmonger's assistant; native of Surbiton. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Miller, Aldershot. 30.— Gosport ( County).— For stealing, 3rd inst.,. a lady's gold open- face geneva watch, No. 11105;. 1 lady' s gold double chain albert, with tassel at end; 1 square gold locket, chased ( glass and inside rims missing), and a gold watch- key attached— A man who gave the namo of WILLIAM BATES, age about 34, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion fresh, hair light brown, clean shaved, eyes blue; dress ( when last seen), faded grey coat, dark check trousers ( worn), black hard felt hat. He travels the country- hawking straw hats, dress- pieces, cloth, handker chiefs, & c. Warrant issued. Information to Inspector Silver, Gosport. 31.— Winchester ( City).— For stealing, 8th inst.— 1 round towel, red stripe down side; 1 pink FRIDAY. JUNK 19, 1896. THE POLICE GAZETTE. 3 and- white shirt; 1 chemise; 1 unbleached sheet, washed white, 3 yards long ; 5 old pillow slips ; I small bath towel; 1 black crape shawl, with fringe at bottom, torn in several places; 1 night- gown, with linen buttons on front; 1 under- vest, worn at bottom of ( Jeeves; 1 white teacloth ; 1 pink and blue ditto ; 3 pink and blue striped dusters— A man known as " MACK" and F. DURMI1T, age 28 to 30, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown ( several bald patches on head), moustache dark; dress, black jacket and vest, dark trousers, whito turn- down collar, black tie, black bard felt bat, 3ace boots ( much worn), wore the iibbon of the Egyptian medal and star, also the ribbon of the Humane Society's medal. Felton, Winchester. 32.— Portsmouth ( Borough).— For obtaining ' food and lodgings by false pretences — JOHN ERNEST HARRISON, alias POVEY, age about 35, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion, hair ( turning grey), - moustache, and eyes ( prominent) dark, well built; dress, blue jacket suit, hard felt hat. Warrant issued. 33.— Portsmouth ( Borough).— For larceny— TWO MEN: 1st, age about 30, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., complexion, hair, and moustache dark ; dress, dark clothes, black hard felt hat. 2nd, age 28 to 30, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., complexion fair, very light bair and moustache ; supposed wearing brown suit and cap. May be found at common lodging- Arouses. 34.— Portsmouth ( Borough). — For stealing, 6th inst., 1 fawn colour covert coat, silk fawn lining, striped lining to sleeves, nearly new; 1 blue plain cloth overcoat, raised seams, velvet collar, plaid lining; 1 soldier's old blue serge coat, much worn— A MAN, age about 28, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., com- plexion fresh, hair brown, several bald patches on top of head, supposed clean shaved; dress, black frieze coat and vest, dirty light trousers, black hard Bat, black tie; wears a piece of blue and white ribbon on vest. Has the appearance of a painter. Stated he came from Brighton, and was known by the name of " MACK," and at a common lodging- house gave the name of F. DURMITT. See Case No. 26). HERTFORDSHIRE. 35.— HertfOrd ( County).— For stealing, between 1st and 3rd inst., a diimond frame safety bicycle, pneumatic tyres, ball bearings, rubbar pedals, straight handles, tangent spokes, changeable gear, lamp and pump, makers, " Turner, Fellows & Co., Birmingham," and " J. Wakett, 81, St. Andrews- street, Hertford," on tube— GEORGE TINKLAR, alias A. CARBY, age 28, height 5 ft. 3£ in., com- plexion fresh, hair brown, moustache light, eyes grey. A stonemason. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Parish, Hertford. 36— Watford ( County).— For stealing, 5th ult., 4 pairs of men's boots— JOHN RAYMOND, late of Watford, age between 50 and 60, height 5 ft. 7 or • 8 in., complexion fresh, hair turning grey; respect- ably dressed. Warrant issued. Information to Capt. Wymer, Deputy Chief Con- stable, Watford. 37.— St. Albans ( City).— For false pretences— A. CALLINGHAM, age about 30, height 5 ft. 7 in., heavy moustache, dark; dress, black or dark jacket and vest, striped trousers; a painter. Warrant issued. KENT. 38.- Maidstone ( Borough).— For obtaining a • ciegue for £ 5 by false pretences, on 1st inst.— A woman who gave the name of GERTRUDE FIELD, age about 37, height about 4 ft, 11 in., very stout build, complexion, hair ( cut short and curled in front) dark; dress, blue serge skirt, with 3 rows of black braid round bottom, light blouse, black tight- fitting jacket, brown straw hat, trimmed brown velvet and feathers. Of Jewish appearance. Stated that lier first husband kept a lodging- house at Worthing.
