T U B PUBLISHED BY AUTHORITY, NEW SERIES. FRIDAY, MAY 15, 1896. VOL. XIII., No. 1292 REGULATIONS. 1. All announcement* for insertion in the P01. ICE GAZBTTE, and all communications upon them should be addressed to TUB EDITOB or THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YABD, TIOVDON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the I'OLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 3. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4 in an cases where a reward is offered the name and address of some person responsible for thepaynent must be given, and the exact conditions be clearly stated. 6. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property, will be prominently inserted, with detailed particulars, at a cost of 15*. per portrait, and of Is. Cid. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, including the expense rf engraving on wooi. 6. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officcr of not less r » nk than Superintendent; and, if the name of such person be required to be inserted, and nowari . int is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. 1. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analooous thereto. 8. A nnouncements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and cm 1 alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases, the officer signing the request for insertion of any announcement, will be wholly responsible for any proceedings wlith may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Fridau issue should be forwarced so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday miming. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only, be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office. New Scotland lard, by cheque, crossed " Drummond Sf Co.," Post Office Order payable at Parliament Street, Postal Order, or in Stamps. 13. Advertisements are accepted for the POLICE GAZETTE through Mr. James Willing, 125, Strand, London, the sole Agent, who will furnish the rates on application. 14. DERBYSHIRE. 12.— Ashbourne ( County).— For stealing, 28th ult., 1 gentleman's silver watcb, steel bands, seconds hand, glass loose ; 1 long silver curb- pattern guard; 2 hollow- ground razors, black handles ( in case); 1 brass seal, hands crossed, " Let us pull together" thereon; 1 penknife, 3 blades, tortoise- shell handle; 1 blue plaid cotton shirt, sleeve3 lengthened with different material; 1 George III. shilling— JOHN HALL, age 26 to 30, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., com- plexion fair, hair light brown, eyes supposed grey, scar on temple ( supposed left) ; dress, black worsted jacket and ve3t, grey trousers with blue stripe, black peak cap, light lace boots. DORSETSHIRE. 13. — Poole County). — For embezzlement — WILLIAM GEORGE BARTLETT, age about 22, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., complexion fresh, hair very dark, moustache and eyes dark, cut marks on thumb; dress ( usually), blue ribbed serge coat and vest, dark trousers, black hard felt hat. A butcher's assistant; native of Henstridge, Somerset. Ab- sconded 21st ult. Warrant issued. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Hains, Poole. GLAMORGANSHIRE. 14.— Cardiff ( Borough).— For stealing, 5th inst., a double- cased silver verge watch, " W. Williams" scratched on inside case; 1 black vest; 1 pair brown- and- white check trousers SEIGEL, or SEAGAL, a Jew, age 24, ( looks older), height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion sallow, hair black, clean shaved, eyes dark, thin protruding lips, dimple in chin; dress, dark jacket, brown plaid vest, greyish trousers ( frayed at bottom), black soft felt " Derby " hat. A tailor. Stated he had been employed at Piccadilly and Oxford- street, London. May be found making enquiries of secretaries of Jewish benevolent societies. 15.— Cardiff ( Bvrcrugh). — For stealing, on or abont 12th ult., 3 heifers ( recovered)— A MAN, age 48 to 50, height about 5 ft. 8 in., stout build, complexion sallow, hair dark brown, clean shaved ; wore a dark suit. Appearance of a groom or horse- dealer. Slated his name was BLAKE, and that he was a farmer, of Tully. May be found at fairs. May have in his possession an English silver lever watch, No. 10987. Is a professor of music; dress, usually, grey suit, black bowltr hat. May be found among betting men. Warrant issued. Information to Cipt. Colquhoun, Chief Constable, Swansea. HAMPSHIRE. 17.— Romsey ( County).— For obtaining food and lodgings by false pretences— GEORGE HICKS ( supposed false), age about 30, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., rather stout build, complexion dark, hair dark brown, heavy dark moustacbe, large grey eyes, 2 upper teeth deficient, s'ightly bow- legged, scara back of left hand which cause the fingers to be cramped; dress, dark jacket and vest, light trousers, cloth cap, brown leather boots. He represented himself as an insurance agent for horse3 ( see Case No. 71, 8th inst,). Warn nt issued. Information to Supt. Cooper, Romsey. 18.— Portsmouth ( Borough) — For embezzling £ 4 5s. 0d., 1st inst — HENRY MERCER, age about 34, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., complexion fresh, hair and moustache light brown; dress, grey check suit, or may be wearing b! ack double- breasted melton jacket with silk facings, and hard felt hat; of smart appearance. A traveller. Absconded 4th inst. Warrant issued. 19. — Portsmouth ( Borough). — For house- breaking, between 21& t and 28th ult., and stealing 1 gentleman's small old geneva watch, white dial, no second hands ; 1 small round silver brooch, bird ttereon, pin missing; 1 gold appendage in shape of boat ( damaged) ; 1 plain gold telescopic pencil- case; 1 silver do.; 1 silver bracelet, set green pebbles, oval pattern, 1 polished steel bracelet, brass back, old fashioned; 1 small gold brooch, diamond shape, set 3 or 4 red stones in a row, pin missing; I thick twisted silver chain brooch, with 6 small imitations of Roman coins attached; 1 pair plain gold ear- rings, hoop pattern ; 1 pair gold earrings, set white paste stones; 1 lady's open- face gold geneva watch, gold dial, supposed word " Geneva" on inside; 1 gold bar brooch, several pearls in centre; 1 small round silver brooch; 1 small gilt horse- shoe brooch, set several paste stones, 1 missing; 1 small oblong silver brooch, set 2 red and 2 white stones, 1 missing — A MAN, age about 30, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., slight build, complexion fair, supposed slight mous- tache ; dress, dark grey jacket, blue guernsey, cord trousers, skull cap. Was accompanied by another man, shorter than himself, and who has a deep scar on left side of face. They carry bags, and go from house to house, ostensibly for the purpose of collect- ing rags and bones. 20. — Portsmouth ( Borough).— For stealing £ 7, 2nd inst.— HENRICH ROSENKRANZER, age 27 ( looks older), height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., com- plexion dark, broad features, moustache brown; dress, fawn colour overcoat, dark velvet collar, black morning coat, grey trousers, black hard felt hat, brown shoes, carried a small dark walking stick. A German, speaks good English. A gardener, and may seek employment as such. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Town Hall, Portsmouth. 21.— Southampton ( Borough).— Forembezzle- ment— WILLIAM ADAMS, age 22, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., small features, hair ( slightly bald) very light, speaks indistinctly; dress, dark suit, black hard felt hat. A journeyman baker. Absconded 28th ult. Had with him a small yellow wooden box. Warrant issued. 22— Southampton ( Borough).— For embezzle- ment— W. J. COX, age 35 to 40, height 6 ft. 1 or 2 in., very slight build, complexion pale, hair and moustache dark brown; respectably dressed. A brewer's traveller. Warrant issued. HEREFORDSHIRE, 23.— Ledbury ( County).— For stealing a pair of black Oxford cloth trousers, at Wellington Heath on 10th ult.— Expiree THOMAS TATTERSALL, alias JOHN THOMAS TATTERSALL, and OLIVER HOLDER, Office No 919- 6 ( see Gazette, 3rd ult., Case No. 58, and 17th ult., Case No. 14), age 40, height 5 ft. 6| in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes hazel, lost front teeth, walks lame right leg, wears an elastic band on right thigh, sailor with right hand extended on right forearm, Ecar on left eyebrow, left side of neck, and under left ear, scald scars on chest; dressed in dark plaid stable jacket, black Oxford cloth trousers, black hard hat, long dark greatcoat with cape, and has a brown cap. He represents himself as being attached to the Ordnance Survey, and as a telegraph inspector,, engages men to work for him, obtains board and lodging for himself, borrows money to pay the car- riage on his luggage, supposed to be at the nearest railway station, steals what he can, and absconds; was last heard of on 6th inst., at Wellington, Salop, where he represented himself as a railway official, and carried a pair of ticket nippers; supposed to be now in North or South Wales. Sentenced at Stafford Quarter Sessions, 17th Oct., 1893, to 12 months, and license forfeited, for false pretences. G K P 579. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Phillips, Ledbury. HERTFORDSHIRE. 24— Hertford ( County).— For deserting his wife and family— JOSEPH SAVILLE, age 29, height 5 ft. in , complexion dark, hair and eyes dark brown. A tailor; native of Stepney, London. Parish, Hertford. 25. — Watford ( County).— For burglary — THOMAS MURRHAL, an Irishman, age 55 to 60, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., complexion fresh, hair dark, right eye badly discoloured, left little finger deficient; dress, speckled coat, 2 waistcoats ( one lined leather to form inside pockets), cord trouEers, dark cap, lace boots. Warrant issued. Information to Capt. Wymer, Deputy Chief Constable, Watford. ISLE OF WIGHT. 26.— Ryde ( Borough).— For obtaining money by false pretences, 8th inst. — MARY SMITH ( supposed false), age about 26, height 5 ft. 1 or 2 in., stout build, complexion sallow, full face; dress, black dress ( fancy material), black double- breasted jacket, brown hat. She represented that a sum of money had been left her, and that she required her railway fare to Cornwall, to which county she belonged. Warrant issued. Information to Head Constable Hinks, Ryde. KENT. 27.— Chatham ( County).— For embezzlement— GEORGE PASSBY, late relieving officer of the Medway Union, age 36, height 5 ft. 10 in., slight build, complexion dark, sharp features, hair and long moustache dark ; dress, navy blue serge suit, black bard felt hat, black tie; of gentlemanly appearance. Warrant issued. 28.— Chatham ( County). — For stealing a leather case containing 3 clarionets, A, B, and C, marked A, No. 6997, R. M. Band, maker Boosey; B marked R. M. Band, maker, Chappell; C marked No. 24768, R. M. Band, maker Boosey— JOSEPH THEODORE O'BRIEN, a musician, age 30, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes blue ; a deserter, Regimental No. 8204. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Lacy, Chatham. 29.— Sandwich ( County).— For embezzlement — WILLIAM HUNTLEY, age 29, height 5 ft. 5 in., 1 FRIDAY, MAY .15, 1896., T H E POLICE GAZETTE. 3 complexion ruddy, hair brown, slight light mous- tache; dress, dark overcoat, brown jacket, grey striped trousers, black hard felt hat, lace boots. A baker; native of Dover. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Chaney, Sandwich. LANARKSHIRE. 30.— Hamilton ( Burgh).- For breaking into a railway booking office, 5th inst.— THOMAS RICE RIED, alias ANDERSON, age 26, height 5 ft. 5 in., well bnilt, complexion pale, hair light, clean shaved, • eye3 grey, large nose, small scar right eyebrow, mole right chest, small scar upper border left knee, lobules of ears adhering ; supposed dressed in light clothes. A native of Edinburgh. Is also wanted at Glasgow ( 766 | 95, Scotch Register of Criminals)— A MAN, age letween 30 and 40, height 5 ft. 10 or 11 in, hair dark, supposed dark moustache, sharp features ; dressed in light clothes, speaks with London or slight foreign accent. May have in their possession false keys and safe- breaking implements. They were assisted by John Kane ( who is in custody), age 31, a hammerman. Native of Glasgow. No. 725 | 95, Scotch Register of Criminals. Infoimation to Chief Constable Millar, Hamil- ton. LANCASHIRE. 31.— Bootle ( Borough).— For obtaining, 2Ist ult., eight horses value £ 203, by means of worthless cheque— THOMAS WHEELER, age 45, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion sallow, hair dark brown, moustache ( slight) brown, walks erect; dress, brown check suit ( tight fitting trousers), cap to match. Appearance of a horse- dealer; was recently in business as a provender dealer at Wolverhampton. Is known to horsedealers at Birmingham, West Bromwich, Tattenhall, and elsewhere. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Bootle. 32.— Leigh ( County).— For failing to report— Supervisee JOHN WOODS, Office No. 48443, ago 32, height 5 ft. 8f in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes grey, 2 scars centre of forehead, 1 over left eyebrow, " Little Nellie " and woman inside, man, bird, and " J. W." outside left arm, elephant outside left upper arm, and bust of soldier outside left fore- arm, bracelet left wrist, 2 women inside, 2 flags, anchor, and " P. O." outside right forearm, bracelet right wrist. Sentenced at Manchester Assizes, 9th July, 1894, to 12 months hard labour and 3 years police supervision, for burglary. 2559. Warrant issued. NORTHAMPTONSHIRE. 33.— Daventry ( County). — For stealing, 23rd ult., a chimney sweep's machine, hand - brush, scraper, and 2 cloths — FREDERICK MOUN- TAIN, alias JAMES BAMFORD, age about 60, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 in., complexion dark, hair turn- ing grey, cast in one eye, rather deaf; dress, car- digan jacket, cord trousers, black cap. A chimney- sweep ; native of Aston, near Birmingham. Has been previously convicted of a similar offence at Warwick. Warrant issued. Information to Sapt. Hustler, Daventry.
