All announcement!! for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communications upon them should be addressed to THE EDITOB OF THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YABD, LONDON, S. W. 1. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the TOI. ICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them bg another force. 3. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered the name and address of some person responsible for , the payment must be given, and the exact conditions be clearly stated. B. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property, will be prominently inserted, with detailed particulars, at a cost of 15 » . per portrait, and of 7s. 611, per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, including the expense cf engraving on wood. 6. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less r" nk than Superintendent; and, if the name of such person be required to be insi- rted, and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or njialoanns thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to he apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and a* J alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZEITB, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases, the officer signing the request for insertion of any announcement, will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noonon Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition notlaterthan Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only, be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, by cheque, crossed " Drummond Sf Co.," Post Office Order payable at Parliament Street, Postal Order, or in Stamps. 13. Advertisements are accepted for the POLICE GAZETTE through Mr. James Willing, 125, Strand, London, the sole Agent, who will furnish the rates on application. 14. SPECIAL NOTICE. An inventor has patented a composition for taking casts of footprints in any soft ground, and Government has acquired the right to use this invention in any part of the United Kingdom. It is anticipated that it will prove of value occasionally in criminal cases, especially in rural districts, and any Police Force that wishes to have particulars of it, is invited to apply to the Home Office confidentially for that purpose. Native of Bethnal Green. 2.— N Division.— For falsifying account? to the amount of £ 55— HENRY WILLIAM PEA- COCK, age 45, height 5 ft. 6 in., slight build, com- plexion, hair ( rather long and curly) and moustache dark; dress, l'ght dust coat, black morning coat and vest, grey twead trousers, black hard felt hat. A clerk. Warrant issued. 3.— N Division.— For stealing clothing, 1 gladstone bag, boots and jewellery— ALEXANDER STRUBIG, alias SCHULTZ, age 27, height 5 ft, complexion sallow, long nose, bad teeth, hair and moustache light, eyes blue; dress, brown beaver jacket, black trousers, blue shirt, red tie, light grey cap, lace boots. Warrant issued. 4. — p Division. — WILLIAM JOHN TRUDGETT, Case No. 5, 10th April, 1891, not to be arrested. Warrant withdrawn. 5. — T Division. — For embezzlement — EDMUND COX, age 27, height 5 ft., csmplexion fair, hair light brown; can speak French; dress, black diagonal jacket and vest, light trousers, black hard felt hat. Is accompanied by his wife and baby in arms. A fishmonger. Absconded 8th ult. Warrant issued. 6. — V Division. — For stealing clothes and jewellery from his lodgings— TOM EDWARDS, age 34, height 6 ft. 1 in., complexion, hair ( bald on top of head) and long moustache dark, large hooked nose; dress, daik clothes, hard felt hat. May be found working for saddlers and harness makers in the provinces. Warrant issued. 7.— V Division.— For deserting h's wife and family- WILLIAM ALBERT EXCELL, sge 37, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion fresh, hair light, eyes hazel. Warrant issued. 8.- V Division.— For deserting his wife and family — JOHN JAMES SYMES, alias JOE SYMES, pge 36, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fair, hair brown, eyes grey, stoops slightly ; dres3, mole- skin jacket and vest, brown cord trousers, black felt hat. Has served in the Army. A native of Ham, Surrey. Warrant issued. Information to be forwarded to the Metropolitan Police Office, New Scotland Yard, S. W. CITY OF LONDON. 9.— For forging and uttering a cheque for £ 370 — ALBERT WALTER COUNTER, late of 18, Eddiscombe- road, Fnlham, age about 23, height 5 ft. 8 in., slight build, complexion fair, hair and moustache light, recent scar over one eye; dress dark frock coat, black and white check trousers, red scarf, high silk hat, linen marked " Webster, Bros., Lombard St." Had with him a new leather suit case and crocodile skin kit bag, " J. W. Allan, 37, Strand," stamped thereon. May assume the names of CLAIR and POLLACK. A stockbroker's clerk. Absconded 20th ult. Supposed accompanied by a woman, age 23, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fair, hair light. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. McWilliam, 26, Old Jesviy, EC. BUCKINGHAMSHIRE. 10.— SlOUgh ( County).— For obtaining money by false pretences— A. ADVANI, a Hindoo, age about 35, height about 6 ft. 2 in , dress, light grey suit, long light brown covert coat, brown wide- awake hat, sometimes wears check coa1: and trousers. States he is an Indigo merchant. Has in his possession a number of cheques on Wood bridge & CJ'. S Bank, Slough Branch, by means of which he is obtaining money. May endeavour to leave the country. Warrant issued.. Not to be apprehended out of the United Kingdom. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Sutton, Slough. CHESHIRE. 11.— Middlewich ( County). — For assault, at Brereton, 8th ult. — ISAIAH FINNEY, age about 26, height 5 ft. 10 or 11 in., complexion fresh, hair dark; dress, moleskin or fustian suit. A gipsy; travels the country with a van, selling biushes, & c. Is accompanied by his wife and child. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Large, Miadlewich. 12.— Runcorn ( Oou7ity).— For forging an cider for 300 copies of a book, entitled " TLe Runcorn Illustrated "— ALBERT CLARKE, age about 32, height 5 ft. 9 in., slight build, complexion fair, hair 4 TA* POLICE GAZETTE. FRIDAY, APRIL 1, 1896. light brown, moustache light, eyes ( supposed) blue ; walks very erect; appearance of having been in the Army; believed to be well dressed. Frequents hotels, and plays billiards. Supposed native of Leeds or Bradford. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Okell, Runcorn. DEVONSHIRE. 13. — Exeter ( County). — For non- payment of fine and costs, amounting to £ 1 14s. Gd., for riding on Great Western Railway without paying his fare — JOHN LYSHON, age 46 to SO, height about 5 ft. 7 in., complexion fresb, full face, hair light brown; dress, light suit ( morning coat with hip pockets). A bookmaker; native of Birmingham. Warrant issued. 14.— Exeter ( County).— For cruelty to" a child— JAMES WATERSON, age about 34, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion fair, hair brown, slight light moustache, two fingers of left hand deficient; dress, dark suit, bowler hat, dark overcoat.— ANNIE M. WATERSON ( wife of above), age about 33, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion dark, hair ( with fringe) black; dress, dark dress and jacket. Natives of London. Formerly members of the Salvation Army. Information to the Chief Constable of Devon, Exeter. DURHAM. 15.— South Shields ( Borough).— For stealing carpenters' tools, 13th ult.— A MAN, age 25 to 30, height 5 ft. 2 or 3 in., slight build, whiskers about a week's growth; dress, black jacket and vest, blue dungaree trousers, black check scarf, brown cap. A German; speaks good English. He sold the tools in Newcastle on 14th or 15th ult., when he stated he was a ship's carpenter and was disposing of his tools to raise money to enable him to get to London. Is suspected of having stolen tools de- scribed in Case No. 57, 24th ult. Information to Chief Constable Morant, South Shields. ESSEX. £ 2 REWARD. 16.— Chelmsford ( County).— For deserting his wife and children, on 25th June, 1895, leaving them chargeable to the Chelmsford Union— GEORGE THOMAS SMITH, age 35, height 5 ft. 7 in., com- plexion fresh, hair light brown, eyes blue, two men boxing tattooed on chest, woman, trees, bracelets, rings on arms and hands; sometimes wears Indian gold riags on left little fioger. A native of Writtle, Essex. Was formerly in the 41th and 24th Regi- ments, and, in 1892, was recruiting Serjeant to the Montgomery Militia at Welshpool ( see Case No. 14, 9th August last). Warant issued. The above reward will be paid by the Guardians of the Chelmsford Union for the arrest of Smith. 17.— Chelmsford ( County).— For assault, at Chelmsford, on 19th June, 1894— CHAS. JORDAN, age about 32, height about 5 ft. 7 in., stiff build, complexion fair, full face, moustache and eyes brown, tattooed on arms. A bricklayer; supposed native of Ipswich ( see Case No. 14, 29th June, 1894). Commitment warrant issued. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Somerset, Chelmsford. 18.— Chelmsford ( County).— J. BULLOCK, Case No. 80, L3th April, 1894, not to be arrested. GLOUCESTERSHIRE. 19.— Fishponds ( County).— For stealing £ 178 — JOHN STONE, ago 24, height 5 ft. 4 in , com- plexion dark, hair and moustache dark brown, eyes brown; dress, dark suit, black hard felt hat, light lace boots. Nativo of Kingswood, near Bristol. Warrant istued. Information to Supt. Mathews, Fishponds. HAMPSHIRE. 20. — Lyndhurst ( County). — For inflicting grievous bodily harm, on 6th ult. — WILLIAM HART, age 25, height 5 ft. 4| in., complexion fresh, hair and moustache light brown, eyes blue, cut mark top of head ; dress, dark moDkey jacket, moleskin trousers and vest, dark peak cap. GEORGE HART, ago 20, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., complexion, hair, and eyes dark ; dress, groy tweed jacket and vest, dark cord trousers, blue and white neckerchief, dark peak cap. Natives of Sway. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Payne, Lyndhnrst. 21. — Portsmouth ( Borough). — For stealing, 16th ult., 2 . tablecloths ( recovered) — KEATES, age about 40, hoight 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., slim build, complexion fair, thin features, whiskers and moustache light, shaved on chin, walks badly ; dress, ginger check moruiDg coat suit ( much worn), black hard felt hat. Hr. s been engaged as salesman in a furniture warehouse, and may seek similar employ ment; and his wife, age about 37, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., stout build, blotchy face, addicted to drink; dress, light drab circular c'oak, black dress, browu alpine hat. 22.— Portsmouth ( Borough).— For forging and uttering cheques on Cox & Co.' s Bank— GEORGE NORTON, age 20J, height 5 ft. 11 in., complexion fresh, hair dirk brown, eyes brown, scar top of forehead, 1 on throat, mole 3 in. below right nipple and on both forearms, takes long strideg, and looks on the ground when walking; dress, blue serge jacket suit and cap. Is a deseiter from the 31st Co. Southern Division Royal Artillery. A gardener; native of Kildare. Has in bia possession a cheque- book on Messrs. Cox & Co., containing cheques numbered from J/ 16 013136 to 50. Informatisn to the Chief Constable, Town Hall, Portsmouth. HERTFORDSHIRE. 23.— Hemel Hempstead ( County).— For stealing, 15th ult., at Great Berkhampstead, 1 " Yiking " safety bicycle, referee frame, pneumatic tyres, fitted with brake, no mud- guard, dropped handle- bar, rubber pedals, £- in. blocks, f- chain, " Harrison's" double alarm bell, " Lucas" lamp, " Middlemore " saddle, with bag attached, containing spanner and oil can, all bright parts nickel- plated, other parts enamelled black, makers, " Warman and Hazlewood, Coventry "— A MAN, age about 25, height about 5 ft. 7 in., complexion fair, slight light moustache; dress, light tweed suit and light cap. Information to Supt. Frogley, Hemel Hempstead. KENT. 24. — Ashford ( County). — Portrait and de- scription of WALTER A. NSELL, whose apprehen- sion is toagot for twbezzlement— Age about 27, height about 5 ft. 6 in., complexion sallow, hair light brown ( inclined to curl), eyes brown ; dress, usually, dark jacket and vest, dark brown tweed trousers, light tie, with pin containing stone, black hard felt hat, dark brown double- breasted overcoat, with brown velvet collar. A clerk ; native of Ashford. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Wenham, Ashford. 25.— Canterbury ( County).— For deserting his children— JOHN COX, age about 40, height 5 ft. 7 in., slight build, complexion dark, hair and whiskers dark brown, very largo front teeth; dress, old dark coat, fustian trousers, black hard felt hat. A native of Bishopsbourne, Kent. Warrant issued. Information tp Supt. Wood, Canterbury. 26.— Chatham ( County).— For embezzlement— GEORGE PAStSBY, late relieving officer of the Medway Union, age 36, height 5 ft. 10 in., slight build, complexion dark, sharp features, hair and long moustache dark ; dress, navy blue serge suit, black hard felt hat, black tie; of gentlemanly appearance. Warrant issued. 27.— Chatham ( County). — For stealing a leather case containing 3 clarionets, A, B, and C, marked A, No. 6997, R M. Bind, maker Boosey; B marked R. M. Band, maker, Chappell; C marked No. 24768, R. M. Band, maker Boosey— JOSEPH THEODORE O'BRIEN, a musician, age 30, height 5 ft. 4 in,, complexion fresh, hiir dirk brown, eye3 blue ; a deserter, Regimental No. 8204. Warrant issued. Lacy, Chatham. 28.— Folkestone ( Borough).— For stealing, 14th ult., 1 18- ct. gold curb albert, double length, £ 9 marked ineide swivel— A MAN, who entered a jeweller's shop under the pretenca of making a purchase, age about 32, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., com plexion sallow, hair and moustache dark; dress, dark jaoket and vest, dark trou= ers with fine stripe, wore a gold horseshoe pin. Information to Supt. Taylor, Folkestone. LANCASHIRE. 29.— Leigh ( County)— For obtlining by false pretences, 2 pigs ( recovered)— JAMES ISHER- WOOD, alias " WHITE-' UN," age 30 to 35, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., stout build, comp'exion fresh, hair very light, moustache light; dress, dark coat and vest, brown cord trousers, brown cap, clogs. A butcher; native of Astley Bridge, near Bolton. Has worked at Bolton, Blackpool, Southport, Wigan, and Horwich. May be found at common lodging- houses. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Higgiabotbam, Leigh. 30— Ormskirk ( County).— For obtaining £ 20 by false pretences, 10th ult, at Burscough— JOHN BENTLEY, a clerk, age 40, height 5 ft. 10 in., complexion pale, hair ( bald in front) light brown, heavy moustache, small side- whiskers, eyes brown, rather lame right leg; is fond of drink ; dress, when last seen, black cloth suit, black billycock hat, lace boots, blue overcoat with velvet collar. Has served in the 17th Lancers. Warrant issued. 31.— Ormskirk ( County). — F^ r obtaining money by false pretences, 18th ult., at Founby— A MAN, age about 52, height 5 ft. 9 in., slight build, thin sandy whiskers and moustache, turning grey; dress, brown dust- coat, light trousers, black billy- cock hat. He stated he had secured work in the neighbourhood as a joiner, and wanted the money to bring his boxes from Liverpool. Information to Supt. Jervis, Ormskirk. 32.— Bo Ot I e ( Borough) .— For obtaining, 21st ult,, eight horses value £ 203, by means of worthless cheque— THOMAS WHEELER, age 45, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion sallow, hair dark brown, moustache ( slight) brown, walks erect; dress, brown check suit ( tight fitting trousers), cap to match. Appearance of a horse- dealer ; was recently in business as a provender dealer at Wolverhampton. Is known to horsedealers at Birmingham, West Bromwich, Tattenhall, and elsewhere. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Bootle. 33. — Rochdale ( Borough).— For stealing various articles ( found pledged) from jewellers' shops— A woman, who gave the name of GERTRUDE COLMAN, age 26 to 30, height 5 ft. 2 or 3 in., complexion fresb, full face, hair ( frizzy in front) dark brown, has very small waist; dress, long black jacket, astrachan collar, black dress, bnttoned down back, sealskin cap, trimmed imitation squirrel, and black veil. Stated she came from London, and had visited Birmingham, Liverpool, and Manchester. Had in her possession a book bearing the address No. 1, Powell- street, London. She calls at jewellers' shops and asks to be shown watch- guards, pendants, lockets, & c., and while the attention of the shopman is directed to some other object, steals one or other of the articles. T H E POLICE GAZETTE. 3 MONMOUTHSHIRE. f4. — Newport ( orough). — Portnit ano description of WILFRED NICK LESS, whoi. apprehension is sought for embezzling £ 35, on 10th ult.— Age 33, height 5 ft. in., stout build weight about 13 stone, complexion fair, hair arid monstacho light, is addicted to drink ; dresp, blue serge coat and vest, grey trousers, black hard felt hat, wears a silver watch chain. Native of London Hay erdeavour to leave the country. Warrant issued. Information to Head Constable Sinclair, New- port. NORTHAMPTONSHIRE. 35.— Daventry ( County). — For stealing, 23rd ult., a chimney- sweep's machine, hand - brush scraper, and 2 cloths — FREDERICK MOUN TAIN, alias JAMES BAMFORD, age about 60 height 5 ft. 3 or 4 in., complexion dark, hair turn ing grey, cast in one eye, rather deif; dress, car digan jacket, cord trousers, blick cap. A chimney sweep; native of Aston, near Birmingham. Has been previously convicted of a similar offence at Warwick. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Hustler, Daven'ry. NOTTINGHAMSHIRE. 36.— Nottingham ( Borough).— For failing to report — Licet ce Holder FREDERICK SHAW, Office No. 48622, age 53, height 5 ft. 9 in., com- plexion fresh, hair brown, eyes grey, scar top, and 2 back of head, 1 left cheek, centre of back, noee inclines to left, mole left cheek, red molo centre ot breast, blue cross right forearm, sailor with flag left upper aim, crosses and brick left forearm. Sen- tenced at Nottingham Assizes, 22nd Febiuary, 1888, to 10 years penal servitude for housebreaking. Liberated 21st August, 1895. G 0 443. Information to the Chief Constable, Nottingham. RADNORSHIRE. 37.— Penybont( County) .— Portrait and descrip tion of FRANK PARSONS, whose apprehension is sought for housebreaking at Tynfald, Rhayader; a? o 28, height 5 ft. 62L in., complexion sallow, hair and moustache brown, eyes grey, slight droop in left eyelid, love tattooed on right forearm, crown on left fo earm, ring on back of both hands; dress, grey coat, cord trousers, light cap, heavy boots, all much worn. SHROPSHIRE. 38. — Shrewsbury ( County). — Portrait and description of KATE HUGHES, whose apprehen- jgLy tl i' yj - r= r . - £ tion is sought for tiealiog, 2nd Mar., £ 60 ; a lady's small silver watch, gold figuripg on face, has been repaired by a watchmaker at Coik, whose label may bo inside case, thin go'. d chain, plain pattern, with tassels at end attached; and a lady's rough black serge double- breasted jacket, large black buttons, pockets on hips— Age 22, height about 5 ft. 1 in., rather stout build, comp'exion fresh, full face, bair brown, eyes grey, lost second joint third ADger left hand ; speaks with Welsh accent; dress ( when last seen), grey speckled gimp dress, black- and- white speckled straw hat, and the stolen jacket. A domestic servant; has been in situations at Aberystwyth, Llandudno, and Liverpool. Native of Colwyn Bay, Denbighshire. Was for some years in Bangor Woikhouse. May be found in service, workhouse, home, or at places where militia or volunteers assemble for training. Attends Salvation Army meetings. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Edge, Shrewsbury. SOMERSETSHIRE. 39.— Bridgwater ( Borough).— For stealing quantity of tallow ( recovered)— A MAN, age 30 to 35, height about 5 ft. 7 in., complexion, hair, and moustache dark; dress, brown coat, grey striped trousers, dark cloth cap, lace boots ( one cut down front). A tramping carpenter. Left Bridgwater on 18th ult. Information to Chief Constable Barnett, Bridg- water. STAFFORDSHIRE. 40.— Longton ( County).— For stealing a suit of clothes, at Fenton, on 23rd ult.— HARRY WATSON, age 35 to 40, height 5 ft. 1 or 2 in., complexion fresh, hair black, clean shaved, eyes dark, smart appearance; dress, black worsted cloth coat and vest, light plaid tronsei's, patent leather shoes. A bootmaker; supposed native of Leamington. Is a good baritone singer, and sings at public- houses, etc. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Bakewell, Longton.
