T H E 1. All announcements for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communications upon them should be addressed to THE EDITOB OF THIS POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YABD, LONDON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 3. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions be clearly staled. 5. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property, will be prominently inserted, with detailed particulars, at a cost of 15*. per portrait, and of 7s. 6d. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, including the expense cf engraving on wood. 6. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and, if the name of such person be required to le inserted, and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or nnaloaous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and at / alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in tlie next issue. 10. In all cases, the officer signing the request for insertion of any announcement, will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which ma>; result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must le clearly written on one side of the paper only, be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either o. t the office, New Scotland Yard, by cheque, crossed " Drummond ([ Co.," Post Office Order payable at Parliament Street, Postal Order, or in Stamps. 13. Advertisements are accepted for the POLICE GAZETTE through Mr. James Willing, 125, Strand, London, the sole Agent, who will furnish the rates on application. 14. SPECIAL NOTICE. IDENTIFICATION OP PRISONERS. THE EDITOR requests that Chief Officers of Police, when forwarding for identifica- tion by the Metropolitan Police the Photo- graphs and descriptive forms of Persons in custody, will please see that the specific offence is stated, e. g. -.— Stealing £ 1,000 from Bank ; stealing pair of boots from shop door; stealing bale of silk ; van unattended, & c., & c. This may often prove a ready means of recognition, and Judges have recently complained of the absence of such particulars in dealing with previous convictions. SPECIAL NOTICE. HABITUAL CRIMINALS' REGISTRY. REPRESENTATIONS having been made that the printing in these columns of the weekly list of prisoners due for discharge is inconvenient, the Registrar of Habitual Criminals has obtained the Secretary of State's sanction to his issuing it in a separate form. The list for this week, together with an explanatory circular, will be issued on Saturday to all chief officers of police in England and Wales. APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT. SAMUEL DALE, age 26, height 5 ft. 10£ in., com- plexion dark, hair and eyes dark, clean shaved; drets, light check jacket and vest, white moleskin frcusera, Hack hard felt hat, Army blncber boot3 ; may be weaiirig a rough black overcoat; military appearance. Sapprsed tramping from London to Cardiff, where his wife resides. Warrant issued. 2. — E Division.— For perjury — GEORGE ALFRED JOHNSON, age 28, height 5 ft, 7 in., complexion ruddy, hair and moustache light, eyes blue, appearatce of a corn dealer; dress, daik coat and vest, tweed trousers. A native of Peter- borough. Warrant istued. 3 — F Division. — For embezzlement — WILLIAM JOHN HARRISON, age 31, height 6 ft., slight build, complexion fair, thin features, hair and moustache light, eye3 daik ( right eye weak) ; dress, black coat and vest, brown trousers, black felt hat. A baker; native of Wisborough Green, West Sussex. Absconded 17th ult. Warrant issued. 4.— p Division.— For conspiracy and fraud— ANDREW CLARKSON, alias REGINALD E. DODDS, and ROBERT ASTON DODDS, ago £ 8, height 5 ft. 10 in., complexion fresh, hair and moustache ( fall and long) grey, otherwise clean shaved, eyes grey, deaf left ear, two or three false teeth front of bottom jaw ; dress, dark clothes, hard felt or high silk hat, lace boots; gentlemanly ap- pearance. He has lately earned on a bogus business as a financier, at 171, Queen Victoria- street, E. C. Well known at Bristol, where he is supposed to have been sentenced to 18 meinths imprisonment, a few years since. Warrant issued. 5. — T Division. — For fraud — WILLIAM REEVES, Fge about 30, height 5 ft. 11 in., com- plexion fair, thin face, hair light brown; dress, brown covert coat, brown tweed coat acd vest, cord trousers, plaid tcaif, lace boots. He calls upon greengrocers, solicits an order for gooda, and obtains a deposit. Supposed wa'_ tei for similar offences in the provinces. Warrant issued. Information to be forwardel to the Metropolitan Police Office, New Scotland Yard, S. W. ANGLESEY. G.— Holyhead ( County).— For non- payment of bastardy arrears— OWEN HUGHES, alias WES- LEY, ago 47, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., stout build, very broad shoulders, complexion dark, hair and whiskers dark, large mouth, has piece of one ear bitten off. A native of Gwalchmai, Anglesey; was last seen at Pontjpridd, Glamorganshire, in September last. May be found at a colliery in South Wales. Warraut issued. Stated he was a Government Inspector, and foreman of telegraph engineer.?. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Information to Head CoDstable Armour, New Windsor. 9. — Reading ( Borough). — For deserting his wife aud family — GEORGE PAXTON, age 34, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., stout build, complexion fresh, hair ( long and curled in front) dark brown, moustache ( long and curled at ends) light brown, short side whiskers; a brick- layer's labourer. Has worked in stables, and may seek similar employment; believed to he a native of • Oxford. Supposed accompanied by a young woman. Warrant issned. Information to Head Constable Tewsley, Reading. BRECONSHIRE- 10. — Brecon ( County). — For larceny, 16th ult. — THOMAS LEWIS, age 42, height • 5 ft. 8 in., slight build, complexion sallow, rather long face, hair brown, heavy moustache sandy- brown ; dress, old brown sack coat, dirty slop, mole- skin trousers, old militia boots, cloth cap. Is addicted to drink. Served 12 years in Royal Aitillery, and now belongs to the Carmarthen Militia Artillery; boasts of his smartness as a soldier. A hawker, sometimes works as a farm labourer. Was last seen near Hirwain, going in direction of Aberdare ; is well known at Carmarthen. Warrant issned. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Joseph, Brecon. BUCKINGHAMSHIRE. 11.— Fenny Stratford ( County). — For em- bezzlement— WALTER COMPTON, age 28, height 5 fc. 8 in, complexion fresb, hair and slight mous- tache brown; dress, dark coat and vest, brown trousers, black hard felt hat. A butcher; native of Newport Pagnell. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Lait, Fenny Stratford. CHESHIRE. 12.— Egremont ( County).— For stealing, 22nd ult., at Upton- by- Birkenhead, 1 rather large leather portmanteau, " J. B. G., Rock Ferry," stamped one side; 1 old silver geneva watch, gold dial, black hands, No. 696911, chased back; 1 pair brown leather leggings; 1 pair horse clippers, " The Liver- poo), No. 3 " stamped thereon ; 1 horse- sioging lamp ; 2 slide- mouth horse bits— CHARLES DICKENS, age about 22, height about 5 ft. 4 in , complexion fresb, hair brown, clean shaved, rather large nose, high cheekbones, bow- legged; dress, pepper- and- ealt tweed jacket and vest, brown tweed breeches, corduroy cap, brown leather leggings ( stolen). Has been employed as a grcom aud coachman for the last 3 years; previously employed in a restaurant at Biikenhead. Native of Birmingham. Has been traced to Birmingham and thence to Gloucester ( 24th ult.). Infcrmation to Chief Supt. Hindley, Egremont. 13. — Macclesfield ( County). — For burglary ( breaking out) and stealing, 31st ult., at Tythering- ton, 1 gentleman's gold hunting- watch, white dial; 1 gold brooch, knot pattern; 1 small gold brooch, set coral, and ring to match; 1 black fur boa; 2 bonnets, trimmed black braid ; 1 pair eye- glasses, • with imitation gold chain attached ; 1 Paisley shawl; 1 black knitted shawl, and 17s. 6d.— FLORENCE SMITH FIELD ( supposed false), age about 34, height 5 ft. 1 or 2 in., complexion pale, hair dark, eyes light grey, has lost two or three upper front teeth; dress, black skirt, short imitation sealskin jacket, Eealtkin cap, button boots. May be accom- panied by a man, age about 30, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in , complexion, hair and mous'ache dark ; dress, black suit and black hard felt hat. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Downes, Macclesfield. H— Runcorn ( County).— For obtaining food • and money by false pretences— GEORGE MORRIS ( supposed false), age 43 to 46, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., complexion fresh, hair and moustache light ( turning grey); drees, short black overcoat, black coat and vest, light tweed trousers ( supposed striped), black haul felt hat, white collar and front, black and white tie. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Okell, Runcorn. DORSETSHIRE. 15— Blandford ( County).— PATRICK WIL- SON, Caso No. 19, 8 th November, 1895, not to be arrested. Warrant withdrawn. DURHAM. 16.— South Shields ( Borough).— For em- bezzling £ 5 Is. 0d.— CHARLES O'RILEY, age about 38, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., complexion dark, hair ( inclined to curl) and moustache dark brown, side whiskers, high cheekbones, pug nose ; dress, when last seen, black coat and vest, brown tweed trousers, dark tweed peak cap ( dirty and shabby) ; is well educated, has been employed as clerk at a marine store- dealer's at Gateshead, and may seek similiar employment. May be found at common lodging- houses, or in company of hawkers. Was last seen on 11th ult. at Newcastle- on- Tyne. Warrant issued. 17— South Shields ( Borough).— For stealing ( bailee) I gentleman's 15- ct. gold patent lever watch, No. 127485, gold dial with silver wreath, flowers in centre, steel pointers, frosted dome, English winding and Erglish turned cases; 1 silver chronograph Swiss lever watch, No. 99865, white dial, black chapters, gold pointers, seconds pointer steel, plain cases— JOHN WILLIAM ROCHESTER, known as " FRED," age about 21, height 5 ft. 5j in., stout build, complexion fresh, full round face, hair black, very slight dark moustache, eyes dark, good teeth, cut scar one kneecap, very large feet, turns his toes inwards when walking; dress, when last seen, large fawn- coloured overcoat, brown tweed jacket suit, bard felt hat, collar and tie, lace boots, or may bj wearing a navy- blue corded serge jacket suit. Has been employed by an auctioneer to travel the country with a van, selling watches, jewellery, & c. Is addicted to drink; may be found in company of loose women. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Moiant, South Shields. 18.— Sunderland ( Borough).— Escaped from police cells at Sunderland, on 28th ult, charged with having in his possession implements for the manufacture of counterfeit coin — WILLIAM ALMOND, age 28, height about 5 ft. 8 in., com- plexion fresh, round face, hair and moustache light brown, eyes blue, 5 blue dots back of left hand, scar right forearm, turns toes outwards, and walks with shuffling gait. A labourer; native of Sunderland. Supposed to have worked in a shipyard at Kirkcaldy, under the name of PETER MARTIN. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Huntley, Sunder- land. ESSEX. 19.— CheI msf Ord ( County).— For neglecting to maintain his wife, leaving her chargeable to the Chelmsford Union — CHARLES FREDERICK WOOLLEY, age 35, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion sallow, hair, whiskers, and moustache dark. Was employed last August as clerk of works at Knowles Asylum, Fareham, Hants. Photograph may be eeen on application. Warrant issued. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Somerset, Chelmsford. FLINTSHIRE. 20.— Mold ( County).— For obtaining money, food, and lodgings by false pretences— JOHN RICHARD JONES, age 25 to 30, height 5 ft. 6 in, complexion fresb, hair dark, burn mark on back of left hand and arm; dress, black ribbed jacket and vest, dark plaid trousers, with two patches of darker colour on seat, dark cloth peak cap, lace boots, with toecaps, square toes, military leggings, red- and- black plaid muffler. He represents himself to be engaged putting up telegraph wires, and employs men to assist him. Supposed identical with Richard Thomas Wynne, sentenced to 2 months imprisonment, 15th November last, at Barmouth, for larceny, and to 1 day's imprisonment, 23th inst., at Mold Assizes, for obtaining food and lodging by false pretences. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Davies, Mold. GLOUCESTERSHIRE. 21.— Gloucester ( County).— For stealing, 17th ult. ( with another man, in custody), £ 22 17s. lOd. from a post office— CHARLES JOHNSON, age 22, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion sallow, round face, hair and eyes brown, scar intide and under right ankle, 2 small boil s. ars base of spine, 2 email scars on breast, cut scar left thumb and over right eye; dress, dark suit ( supposed serge), bi- o* n boots, hard bowler hat, may be wearing loDg brown close- fitting overcoat-. Has been several times previously con- victed of till robbery. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Philpott, Gloucester. 22.— Northleach ( County).— For obtaining by false pretences, through the " Exchange and Mart" newspaper, at Bioadwel', on 8th November last, 1 gold engagement ring— R. NORTON, alias CAPTN. NORTON, age about 54, teight about 5 ft. 10 in., slight build, complexion sallow, hah- and moustache grizzled grey. Ho had the rin< and letters addressed to 125, Greenwiob- road, Greenwich. Warrant issued. Not to bo arrested out of the United Kingdom. Information to Supt. Everiss, Nurthleach HAMPSHIRE. 23.— Bournemouth ( County).- For obtain- ing money by means of fictitious cheques — WILLIAM HENRY" PLOWDEN EYTON, ago about 55, height about 6 ft., hair ( turning grey) and heavy moustache brown, broad shoulders, walks erect, wears cotton wool in ears; dress ( sapposod), brown overcoat, fcilk facings, Norfolk jacket, knickerbockers, plaii stockings, bro « rn spats, b. own drab flat- top hard hat. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Fester, Bournemouth. 24.— Gcsport ( County).— For stealing, 24th ult., at Forton, by means of a trick, a black geldiDg pony, about 12 hands, 8 years, long mane and tail, bald patch about the size of a 5s. piece on near fore leg behind knee- joint, good aotion; a set of black, brass mounted harness, brass hames, and a Reading cart, chocolate, picked out yellow, tail- board and back step broken— WILLIAM FENNER, age 25 ( looks older), height 6 ft. 1 in., complexion fair, hair light brown, eyes blue, 5 blue dots aud 2 moles right forearm, 3 cut marks 1st, and 1 2nd finger rt hand, mole back of neck, suffers from rheumatism and walks badly; dress, light tweed suit, jacket of darker shade, light cap, lace boots, star shape cut in front of one. A horse dealer. Warrant issued. Information to Inspector Silver, Gosport. 25.— Lyndhurst ( County).— For obtaining, 10th ult., by false pretences, at Netley Marsh, a horse and cart— W'lLLlAM FENNER, late of Millbrook, age 25, height 6 ft. 1 in , complexion fair, hair light trown, eyes blue, 5 blue dots, and 2 moles right arm, 3 cut marks on 1st finger aud 1 on 2nd finger right hand, mole back of neck, several moles left arm, suffers from rheumatism; dress, when last seen, dark brown suit, blue overcoat with velvet collar, black hard felt hat, may be wearing a heavy ulster. Warrant issued. Infcrmation to Supt. Pajne, Lyndhurst. 26.— Winchester ( County). — For assault at Crawley, on 9ih nit.— A MAN, age 35 to 40, height 5 ft. 6 or 8 in., complexion ruddy, hair brown, scowling expression; weating long drab covert coat and cap. Had the appearance of having been in the Army. Warrant issued. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Sillence, Winchester. 27— Portsmouth ( Borough). — For stealing, 17th nit.— 1 geLt'emau' 8 gold horseshoe pin, set 9 or 12 rubies and diamonds in claw setting— A MAN, ago 29 to 30, height 5 ft. 1 or 2 in., complexion fair, hair and moustache light brown. Wore black coat, black hard felt hat, and carricd brown gloves. Ho called at a shop, and inspected a number of pins, but did not make a purchase, promising to call later. LEICESTERSHIRE. 31.— South Wigston ( County).— For larceny— CHARLES MILLER, age 37, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion fresh, hair brown ( turning grey), eyes brown, lost 1st joint of right forefinger, scar side of nose and forehead; dress, old brown coat and cap ( much worn), dirty dark cord trousers. A draper's traveller ; native of Epworth. Is well- known in London, Croydon, Scarborough, Nottingham, Ripley Grove, Retford, Hull, and Holbeach. Absconded 20th ult Warrant issued. MONMOUTHSHIRE. 36.— Tredegar ( Coumty).— For obtaining £ 16 by false pretences— JAMES SNEDDEN, age 44, ht ight 5 ft. 11 in., complexion fresh, hair ( bald on top) dark brown, eyes brown, 2 blue marks on face near left eye, reddish colour birthmark ( size of man's hand) inside of left thigh ; dress, tweed pepper- and- salt suit with stripe running through, black hard bowler bat, light boots ( recently Bolea). A native of Court Bridge, near Glasgow. Warrant issued. Information to Sopt. AlleD, Tredegar... £ 15 ascertained that he had the money in his possession, picked his pocket and decamped. Supposed accom- panied by his wife, who is said to be a Swede, about same age, tall, very stout, complexion dark; have - with them a very large dark American trunk and a long 3 ellow portmanteau. He took premises and started the manufacture of " Holdall" net hand- bag and net- work photo- graph frames, advertised for emp'oyees, bat before engaging them, obtained from them 6am; of money, varying from £ 5 to £ 25, as security that they would not divulge the secret of his trade, after which he disposed of his stock and absconded.
