W. o particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought tcill he inserted m one issue of the ' POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 3 Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4 In all cases where a reward is offered the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions be clearly stated. 5 Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property, will be prominently inserted, with detailed particulars, at a cost of 15*. per portrait, and of 7s. 6d. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, including the expense cf engraving on wood. _ _ 6. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and, if the name of such person be required to l, e inserted, and nowarrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank 7. than Inspector, or analonous fhn- efo. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or ofstolen property bear a number, and wti alphabetically arranged by counties. 0. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLIOB GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases, the officer signing the request for insertion of any announcement, tcill be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only, be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, by cheque, crossed " Drummond Sf Co.," Post Office Order payable at Parliament Street, Postal Order, or in Stamps. 13. Advertisements are accepted for the POLICE GAZETTE through ' ilr. James Willing, 125, Strand, London, the sole Agent, ivho will furnish the rates on application. 14. SPECIAL NOTICE. IDENTIFICATION OF PRISONERS. THE EDITOR requests that Chief Officers of Police, when forwarding for identifica- tion by the Metropolitan Police the Photo- graphs and descriptive forms of Persons in custody, will please see that the specific offence is stated, e. g. :— Stealing £ 1,000 From Bank ; stealing pair of boots from shop door; stealing bale of silk ; van unattended, & c,, & c. This may often prove a ready means of recognition, and Judges have recently complained of the absence of such particulars in dealing with previous convictions. SPECIAL NOTICE. THE SECRETARY OF STATE has transferred the Habitual Criminals' Registry to New Scotland Yard, and has appointed the Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of the Criminal Investigation Department to be Registrar of Habitual C rim in als. The annual volume hitherto compiled by the Habitual Criminals' Registry will not be issued after 1895, but in lieu of it " A List of Persons coming within the " provisions of Sections 5, 7, and 8 of the " Prevention of Crimes Act, 1871, dis- " charged, or about to be discharged from " Convict and other Prisons," will be issued every week. These lists will appear weekly iu the Police Gazette, and the first of the series will be published in these columns on Friday, the 10th inst., con- taining the discharges for the week com- mencing 30 th ult. A native of High Ofts, Hawick. Warrant issned at Ant * erp. If found within the United Kingdom not to be arrested, but information to be forwarded to the Metropolitan Police Office, New Scotland Yard, S. W. 2.— c Division.— For stealing ( bailee), since 12th ult. — - I gold watch bracelets ( 1 No. 917 scratched on snap, 1 No. 15234 engraved on inner case) ; 1 gold crescent brooch, with bird, No. 1713 scratched on back ; 1 silver watch, No. 37445 ; 1 gentleman's pig- skin travelling bag with fittings, silver tops — FREDERICK EDWARDS, alias MASON, age 26, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion, hair, and moustache dark ; has a habit of turning his face away when talking; dress, dark suit, blac'c hard felt hat; gentlemanly appearance. Warrant issued. 3.— G Division.— F. 1- obtaining £ 24 12s. 6d. by false pretences— GEORGE A. KENDALL, age about 34, height 5 ft. 9 in., slight build, complexion fair, hair and moustache light; well dressed. Formerly resided at Colchester. Had an office at 66, Finsbury Pavement, from May to November last, where ho carried on a bogus concern, styled the Stock and Share Realisation Company. Supposed to have defrauded various persons in the provinces. Warrant issued. 4. — L Division.— For obtaining a piano organ by fraud— FREDERICK CLARKE, age about 27, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion fair, hair brown; dress, light jacket suit, dark peak cap; military appearance. Warrant issued. 5.— N Division.— For stealing a quantity of wearing apparel and under- linen, marked " Chris- tine Stevens" — LILY STARR, alias NELLIE PRESTON, age 24, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion pale, hair ( partly bald) dark brown, wears a wig, eyes dark, appearance of an actress; dress, sup- posed red plush skirt, silk blouse, corded at back, large hat) trimmed feathers, wearing a bumble- bee shape gold brooch, moonstone body, ruby eyes ( all stolen). Native of London. May seek employment at provincial theatre! or music halls as a ballet or chorus girl. 6.— T Division.— For stealing £ 5 8s — MARY MARSHALL, age 22, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion fresh, hair ( fringe on forehead) dark brown, eyes brown; dress, black skirt, light blue bodice trimmed brown braid, black hat trimmed red flowers. Native of Stan well, Middlesex ; may be found with a man, age 20, height 5 , ft. 4 in., stout build; a navvy. Absconded 22nd ult. Warrant issued. A native of Oxford. He left Reading 11th ult., where he had been employed by the Pearl, Prudential, and other insurance companies; may seek similar employ- ment. Warrant issued. BUCKINGHAMSHIRE. 8.— Fenny Stratford ( County).— Portrait and description of WILLIAM HENRY HODSDON, late Relieving Oflicer of Winslow, whose apprehen- sion is sought for embezzling £ 69 on 17th inst.— Age 37, height 5 ft. 4 in., stout build, full face, hair and heavy moustache brown, eyes ( full) blue, suffers from varicose veins ; dress, dark grey cloth mackin- tosh with cape, black cardigan jacket, dark cloth vest and trousers, whito silk tie, black patent leather leggings. Formerly employed as porter at Mitcham Union. He left for London on 17th inst. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Lait, Fenny Stratford. Had with him two hand- bags and a portmanteau. A native of Cornwall. Left Swansea, 30ih September last, stating he was going to Cardiff and Weston- super- Mare. Was seen at Cardiff on 23rd October last, when he appeared to have been drinking heavily. Warrant issued. Information to Capt. Colqnhoun, Chief Constable, Swansea. GLOUCESTERSHIRE. 13.— Fishponds ( County).— Absconded from a Reformatory School— CHARLES COOMBS, age 18, height 5 ft., complexion fresh, hair dark, eyes ( sunken) hazel, high cheek- bones, wart on back of left hand; dress, navy- blue jacket and vest, white cord trousers, blue cap, without peak. Native of College Green, Bristol.— GEORGE HARRIS, age 16, height 5 ft. 2 or 3 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes grey, 7 dots back of left hand, 1 on back of left wrist; dress, Reformatory School uniform. HAMPSHIRE. 14.— Bournemouth ( County).— For stealing, 21st ult., 1 large gold necklet and chased locket, solid links, 2 holes centre of links; 1 aqua- marino brooch, filigree gold setting; 1 jpair long gold ear- drops ; 1 pair do., set with 2 carbuncles, star on each stone; 1 large gold snake- pattern mourning ring, hair in centre, ruby eye; 1 lady's gold geneva watch, about the size of a halfpenny, 905- 1 and 280- 5 scratched between holes in dome; 1 plain gold brooch with chain links down centre; 1 silver brooch, leaf pattern; 1 gold ring, set turquoise with pearl in centre; .1 gold horseshoe pin, diamond in centre and ends; 1 moonstone brooch, gold pin, half- moon shape— TWO MEN: 1st, age 28 to 30, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., rather stout build, complexion fresh, clean shaved; dress, blue overcoat with velvet collar, dark trousers, bowler bat, supposed brown boots. 2nd, age 28 to 30, height about 5 ft. 4 in., hair black, eyes dark, small black moustache; of foreign appearauce; wearing blue overcoat with velvet collar, or grey frieze overcoat. Foster, Bournemouth. 15.— Southampton ( Borough)— For stealing a Post Office Savings B ink deposit book, value £ 115 — CHARLES MIDDLETON, alias JACKSON, age about 50, height about 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., very corpulent, complexion florid, moustache ( thick), turning grey, may be clean shaved, eyes ( slight cast in right) dark grey, teeth turning black; dress, dark blue overcoat, velvet collar, dark grey mourning suit, Oxford shirt, black bow tie, with white spots, wearing a double gold albert chain, gold coin attached. A bookmaker or dealer. May be found in company of betting men; supposed living in the neighbourhood of Vauxball or North London. — For aiding and abetting— J. NASH, alias JIM SMITH, age 30, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion dark, hair dark brown, small dark moustache, appearance of a seaman; wearing blue serge suit. A book- maker's clerk. Warrant issued. HEREFORDSHIRE. 16.— Ledbury ( County).— For neglecting their children — WILLIAM PEART, age about 45, height 5 ft. 10 in., slight build, complexion and hair dark, moustache and side whiskers, eyes hazel, military appearance; dress, dark frock coat, dark trousers, black hat, all much worn. A tramping tailor. Has worked at Witney, Oxford, Reading, and Stroud. Native of Spinnymore, Durham.— ELIZABETH PEART, wife of above, age about 37, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 in., slight build, complexion sallow, hair brown, eyes grey; dress, dark dress and jacket, black hat. A native of Berkeley, Gloucester. Have with them seven children, the youngest 5 months old. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Phillips, Ledbury. HERTFORDSHIRE. 17. — Hemel Hempstead ( County)-. — For neglecting his three children — JOHN GIBBARD, age 34, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion fresh, hair and moustache light, eyes grey, slovenly appearance; dress, brown mixture jacket, cord trousers, grey cap. A brewer's drayman; native of St. Alban's. May be found at Hove. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Frogley, Hemel Hempstead. KENT. 18.— Maidstone ( County). — For obtaining 15 geese by false pretences— GEORGE ALGERNON HOLLANDS, of 71, St. Mary's- road, Hastings, age abont 34, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion fresh, hair and moustache brown, smart appearance ; dress, light brown Newmarket overcoat, brown trousers, light brown felt hat, usually wears brown boots. May be accompanied by a woman, with whom he lived, age about 30, height about 5ft. 6in., complexion fresh, full face, hair light brown, wearing a full length brown jacket, and brown felt hat; had, with her a girl, age about 4. LANCASHIRE. 19.- Chorley ( County).— For stealing, 28th nit., £ 10, at Whittle- le- Woods— A MAN, age about 50, height about 6 ft., stout build, complexion sallow, bair and moustache ( turning grey) dark, several moles or warts on left side of face; dress, long black overcoat, dark grey coat, black vest and trousers, black hard felt hat, lace boots. A painter; native of Ashton, near Preston. Was rccantly convicted of a similar offecca at Lancaster. Information to Sapt. Norris, Chorley. 20.— Leigh ( County).—— For larceny— A MAN, age 38, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion fresh, hair and heavy moustache sandy; dress, black jacket and vest, brown cord trousers, black- and- white muffler black cap, blucher boots. A farm labourer, and travels with threshing machines; native of Burs- cough Bridge, near Ormskirk. Information to Supt. LINCOLNSHIRE. 22. — Grantham ( County). — For stealing £ 7 10s., at Claypole— HERBERT WELSH, age 20, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., complexion fair, full face, moustache very light, Bear on side of forehead; dress, dark jacket and vest, dark cord trousers, white muffler, blue serge cap, lace boots, or may be wear- ing black rough jacket and vest, grey trousers, white collar and tie, black hard hat, low shoes, which he purchased at Newark. A labourer; formerly employed at a contractor's at Stamford; may be found at stone- masons, or public- house stables ; last seen at Doncaster, 19th ult. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Taylor, Grantham. 23.— Market Rasen ( County).— For obtaining money by false pretences, 12th November last — JOHN WILLIAMSON, alias JOHN WALKER, age 42, height 6 ft., slight build, complexion fair, hair and moustache light, slight beard; dress, bluish jacket, brown or grey coat, dark vest, drab cord trousers ( all greasy), heavy lace boots ; appearance of an engine driver. A dock labourer, has also been employed as a titter in a foundry. He calls on clergymen end others, representing he is a railway servant, collecting money for another servant who has mot with an accident somewhere on the line, and is likely to be oil duty for weeks, during which he would receive only 5s. per week from the railway company. Warrant is3uod. Information to Inspector Burton, Market Rasen. 24.— Spalding ( County).— For obtaining food and lodgings by false pretences, between 13th Nov. acd 19th ult., at Sutton Bridge— JOHN ELLIS, age about 36, height 5 ft. 10 in., rather red face, hair, moustache and eyes brown ; dress, black, white, and grey check cloth coat, small check cloth vest, brown check trousers, black- and- white stripe neck- tie, horseshoe pin, black- and- white silk wrappe-, brown hard hat, lace boots. Accompanied by his wife, age about 42, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in , rather long red face, grey hair slightly deaf; wore black cape and bonnet. Stated he was a fish curer and sales- man, and a native of Norwich. Formerly resided at King's Lynn, where he was known as " JOHN SON." Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Osborn, Spalding. STAFFORDSHIRE. 28.— Brownhills ( County).— For larceny, 28th ult, at Cannock— NATHAN TAYLOR, alias TOM SMITH, age about 36, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 in., com- plexion dark, hair dark brown, heavy moustache dark; dress, light cloth jacket and vest, dark cloth trousers, light cloth cap, old brown shoes. Native of Birmingham. He is a very gocd clog dancer; may be found in company of theatricals, or seek emp^ oymekt at music halls. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Barrett, Brownhills. 29.— Longton ( County). — For embezzling £ 13 Is. 6d., at Feuton, on 25th Nov.— THOMAS HANCOCK WILLIAMS, age 43, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion ruddy, hair, whiskers, and mous- tache brown, eyes grey, walks with quick step, and leans forward, fond of drink ; of good address ; dress, dark grey overcoat, black cloth vest, grey cloth trousers, dark tie, black alfine hat, lace boots. Native of Cobridge, Stoke- on- Trent. May seek employment as agent at a colliery. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Bakewell, Longton. MONTGOMERYSHIRE. 25.— Llanidloes ( Comity).— For deserting his wife leaving ber chargeable to the Newtown and LIan'idices Union— JOHN ARTHUR OWEN, alias JOHN HOPE OWEN, or JOHN OWEN HOPE, age 27 or 28, height 5 ft. 9 in, slight build, com- plexion fresh, thin face, hair light brown, eyes grey. He belongs to the 4th South Wales Borderers Militia. A mason, supposed to be working in some part of the Rhondda Valley or Cardiff. Warrant issued. Information to Inspector Lake, Llanidloes. NORFOLK. 26.— Holt ( County).— For night poaching and shooting and wounding a gamekeeper at BristoD Norfolk, 27th ult. — CHARLES RUDD, alias SHIRTS, age 38, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion pale, hair light brown, eyes grey, two scars on right side of head, large scar front of right leg, several recent wounds on head; dress, old brown velveteen coat, largo inside pockets, dark cord trousers and vest, cap, lace boots. Had in his possession a light check suit. Native of Edgefield, Holt. Warrant issued. Information to Inspector Willmott, Holt. OXFORDSHIRE. 27. — Caversham ( County). — For larceny, 30th ult.— WILLIAM TAYLOR, ago 14, height 4 ft. 6 in., complexion pa'e, hair and eyes dark, large mouth; dress, black reefer jacket, bone complexion fresh, hair and eyes grey, walks erect; dress, check suit, round soft black hat, blue shirt, marked 95. A lighterman ; native of Howden. Warrant issned. 35 — H U11 ( Borough).— For stealing a lady's gold keyless geneva watch, No. 26754 ; 1 gold guard ; 1 15- ct. gold plain dress ring; 1 ditto, set 3 turquoise and pearls ( guard recovered)— H.
