All announcements for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communications upon them should be addressed to THE EDITOB OF THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YABD, LONDON, S. W. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought tcill be inserted in one issue of the I'OLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them bg another force. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. In all cases where a reward is offered the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions be clearly stated. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property, will be prominently inserted, with detailed particulars, at a cost of 15s. per portrait, and of 7s. 6d. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, including the expense if engraving on wood. 0 Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and, if the name of such person be required to be inserted, and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Tnswecfnr nr nnn. lnao* is thereto. 2. 6. NOTICE. 1.— The composition of the Friday No. of the " Police Gazette" will be found arranged for easy reference as follows: — ( a) Regulations at top of 1st page. ( b) Apprehensions Sought. ( 1). DERBYSHIRE. 9.— Bakewell ( County). — For obtaining, by false pretences, a Urge 18- ct. gold chronometer and s'op watch, centre seconds, compensation balance, No. 103 on inside of outer case, and No. 10103 inside inner case, latter number supposed also on plate— J. BARTLETT- SHEPHERD, age 28 to 30, height5 ft. 7 or 8 in., sharp features, hair very dark, Blight moustache black, Jewish appearance, of good address; dross, olive- green melton overcoat, dark green collar, dark grey ttriped trousers, brown hard felt hat, usually wears patent leather boots. Talked a great deal of Weymouth at. d Bournemouth, stated he was a member of a firm of diamond merchants at Hatton Garden, and lived at South Audley- street. He advertised in the " Exchange and Mart," of the 15th nit., for a gold watch, for which he would give about £ 8 cash. Ths stolen watch was sent on 23rd ult., and the receipt acknowledged by Bartlett- Shepherd, who gave his address at Rutland House Mansions, Queen's Gardens, Eistbourte ( false), and asked to be allowed a shoit time to obtain an independent opinion. DEVONSHIRE. £ 5 REWARD. 10.— Exeter ( City).— Portrait and description of HARRY PEARSE, alias URIAH PEARSE, and HARRY TAYLOR, whose apprehension f is sought for obtaining goods by fraud :— Age 35 to 40, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., rather stout build, complexion ruddy, fall face, hair dark brown, side whiskers and heavy moustache, turns his feet outwards, awk- ward gait, teiy talkative, fond of drink and low company; dress, when last seen, light overcoat, new suit, black hard felt hat; carried a mackintosh and brown leather G'adstone bag. A builder's foreman ; native of Woodbury, Djvcn. Was at one time employed at Sileby WorHiouse, Yorkshire. Left Exeter, 24th Oct., by 10.35 a. m. train, London and South- Western RaiUay, for Waterloo. May be accowpmied by a woman, age about 23, tall and slight. Warrant issued. Ne t to be arret ted out of the United Kingdom. The above reward will be paid by Mr. C. Offi e No 48944, wanted lor burglary, aua tailing to I eport ( see Gazette, 22nd November, 1895, Case No. 16, and 6th December, 1895)— Age 34, height 5 ft. 7 in., com- plexion fresh, hair brown, eyes grey, 5 hlue dots back of left hand, and T above light wrist. Sen- tenced at Barnstaple, 17th October, 1895, to 14 days hard labour and 4 years police supervision for stealing an overcoat. 445. Information to the Chief Constable, Exeter. DORSETSHIRE. 12.— Sherborne ( County).— For stealing, 7th inst., a pearl necklet, single row with brilliants, 73 pearls, weight 266 grains, single stone snap ( valuable)— MARIE REINHARDT, supposed to be a German, age about 28, height 5 ft. 8 in., fall figure, complexion sallow, round face, hair and eyes ( full) dark ; dress, fawn- colouted tweed drets, long light u'stsr with cape, black hat, brown boots, lii. ed chamois leather. A lady's maid. Supposed arrived at Waterloo about 5 p. m., 7ih inst. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Simpson, Sherborne. DURHAM. 13— South Shields ( Borough).— For stealing overcoats ( recovered) from Board Schools— A MAN, age about 30, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., complexion, hair and moustache dark, speaks with Scotch accent; dress, dark overcoat and vest, light trousers, mauve colour knitted woollen muffler, hard felt hat. Information to Chief Constable Morant, South Shields. ESSEX. 14.— Colchester ( County).— For falsifying a book, belonging to his emp'oyers, at Harwich, during September and October last — JOHN TAYLOR, age about 45, height about 5 ft. 2 in., hair and moustacho dark brown ( turning grey), eyes dark, rather round - shouldered ; dress ( sup- posed) long black overcoat, dark trousers, black hard felt hat. Native of Norwich. Warrant issued. Information to Sapt. Ackers, Colchester. 15.— Colchester ( Borough).— For obtaining, 25th nit., £ 5 by means of a fictitious cheque on London and County Bank— GEORGE JAMES, age about 51, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in , complexion fresh, hair dark brown, right eyelid drops slightly as if from weakness and shows a redness. FORFARSHIRE. 16.— DundeeJ( CtVy).— Portrait and deeciiption cf Expires ROBERT ( HUNTER, alias HUTCHIN- SON, and JOHN M'CALLUM, Office No. 31035, whose apprehension is sought on suspicion of attempted safe- breaking, between SOtli ult. and 1st inst.:— Age 49, height 5 ft. in., complexion fresh, hair ( bald on top) brown, eyea grey, long face, high cheekbones, scar on right, and on both eye- brows, 3 6cirs left temple, " C. S." inside left fore- arm, speaks with English accent; dress, heavy navy- blue overcoat, dark trousers, high crowned black felt bat A shoemaker. Sentenced at Glasgow, 22nd Au; ust, 1882, to 5 years penal servitude for theft. Reg. No. XI. 159, and Scotch Criminal Register, 457/ 93. He is supposed to have been assisted by A MAN ( supposed WM. KENNEDY), age about 30, height about 5 ft. 9 in., complexion fresh, full face, fair moustache, speaks with English accent; wore an overcoat and tweed cap or felt hat. The thieves left Dundee, 1st inst., by the 7.15 a. m. North British train for the south, one of them carry- ing a brown leather handbag. They left behind a set of burglar's instruments, 1 black leather handbag, 1 black glazed ditto, 1 dark lautern, an umbrella with straight white whin handle, a piece of sashline, a piece of sheet lead, and portions of the " Scotsman " and Edinburgh " Evening Despatch " of 29th ult. Hunter is also wanted at Greenock for being con- cerned with tsvo men in custody for shopbreaking. Information to Chief Constable Dewar, Dundee. HAMPSHIRE. 17.— Portsmouth ( Borough).— For stealing a quantity of lady's wearing apparel ( recovered) — GEORGE KING ( supposed false), age between 40 and £ 0, height about 5 ft. 5 in., slight build, thin features, hair and side whiskers grey, chin shaved, supposed wearing moustache; wearing black overcoat, black hard felt hat, brown kid gloves; carried a large size black bag. Information to the Chief Constable, Town Hall, Portsmouth. 18. — Southampton ( Borough). — For in- decently assaulting a male person— MORTIMER HOCOMBE, alias ALEXANDER, and MOR- TIMER, » ge about 50, height about 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., complexion pale, hair ( cut short) dark ( turning grey), clean shaved, good teeth ( supposed false), stoops slightly ; clerical appearance. In conversa- he invariably precedes his remark with " Don't you Beer"'; dress, black Chesterfield coat, black trousers, high silk hat, black band, wore gold- rimmed pince- nefc and a gold double chain. Stated he was a theatrical agent for Alexander's Pantomime Company. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Berry, South- ampton. HEREFORDSHIRE. 19.— Ledbury ( County).— For stealing, 2nd inst., a pair of driving reins and breastplate ( recovered)—- A MAN, age 35 to 40, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., com- plexion sallow, hair dark, rather heavy moustache ( inclined to sandy), short beard ; dress, two jackets ( one brown with large inside pockets), dark trousers, black hard felt hat— all old ; carried a small bundle in white cloth. Ironsers. 2nd, a^ e about 26, height 5 ft. 6 in., s'ight build, complexion fresh, light mous'ache; wore a cap, while collar, brown tie, lace boo's. Warrant issued. Information to Snpt. Dake, Bishop Stortford. 21.— Hitchin ( County).— Portrait and descrip- tion of CHARLES LUCAS, whose apprehension is sought for embtzz'iog, on or about 25th ult, £ 205 12s. llfl., the monies of H. M. Postmaster- General:— Age 45, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion fair, hair a^ id eyes dark brown, chin shaved, mole under right eye, slight hesitation in speech; dress, when last seen, black serge morning coat and vest, grey trousers, grey overcoat, velvet collar, black round hard felt hat, button boots ; wore a lady's long gold chain, and gold ring set red stone. Late postmaster at Royston. Well known at Leicester and Lowes toft, where he served in the Telegraph Department. Warrant issued. Information to Snpt. Reynolds, Hitchin. LANCASHIRE. 22.— Chorley ( County).— For stealing, 17th inet, £ 8— A WOMAN, age 20, height 4 ft. 11± in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes blae, cut mark 1st finger left hand. Native of Liverpool. Information to Supt. Norris, Chorley. 23.— Liverpool ( City).— For embezzlement— GEORGE PALMER, age atout 22, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., complexion dark, hair black, clean shaved ; dress, blue coat and vest, dark trousers, hard felt hat, appearance of a gentleman's servant. Supposed native of Bristol. May seek employment as a waiter at hotels or restaurants. Absconded 14th ult. Warrant issued. Information to the Head Constable, Liverpool. LINCOLNSHIRE. 24.— Spalding ( County). — For embezzling £ 15 from the National Provincial Bank — TOM RICHARD ELLSUM, age 35, height 5 ft, 6 in., stout build, complexion fresh, hair, moustache and . side whiskers brown, eyes dark, works his shoulders up and down when walking, rather hollow back, tarns his feet out, usually weirs a brown knicker bocker suit. A bank clerk; native of Spalding Absconded 20th ult.; may endeavour to leave the country. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. 25.— SpaldingXtfottttfy).— For fraudulent bank- ruptcy— ROBERT JAMES POCKLINGTON, age about 50, height 6 ft., stout build, complexion ruddy, hair, moustache and side whiskers dark brown, eyes dark. Appeiraoce of a farm labourer. Stated he was employed by a farmer in the neighbourhood, and produced a le'ter, pur- porting to bi wiitten by him, asking for the clothes to be supplied, and that he woul J call the following dav and pay for same. Supposed native of London. Generally accompanied by his wife, age about 50, slight butld, very thin sharp features ; dress, red skirt, brown shawl, black hat, trimmed black ribbon. They travel the country, hawking and buying skins, horse- hair, < tc. Known at marine store dealers aid cjmmon lodging houses. Warrant issued. Information to Inspector Lewis, Church Strettou. SUSSEX ( WEST). 29.— Arundel ( County).— Portrait and descrip- tion of WILLIAM THOMAS STRUDWICK, WARWICKSHIRE. 30. — Atherstone ( County). — For carnally knowing a girl, a* e 14, on 2ttti September last — WILLIAM LOCK, age about 47, height about 5 ft. 9 in , complexion swa- tby, hair black, curlg on forehead, eyes dark, large blue mark on forehead, cat mark on upper lip, tattooed one arm; dress, grey plaid jacket and ve3t, with flaps on pockets, and large brown bone buttons, white csrd trousers, yellow Leckerckief, brown billycock hat. A gipsy ; supposed native of Bristol. Travels the Midlard counties with a van, painted jellow. " Ros& nn& h Smith" on tide; accompanied by his wife. Attends fairs, with cocoanuts. Left Smeth- wick, 5th inst., and has been traced to Birmingham. Is supposed to be making his way to Bihtol. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Hannah, Atherstone. WIGTOWNSHIRE. 31.— Stranraer ( County). — For shooting a game watcher, to the danger of life, on 6th inst.— CHARLES McCRAE, age 2L, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion very pale, thin face, hair and very slight moustache light, somewhat bow- legged ; dress ( supposed), dark blue jacket and tr^ u- ers, light check tweed cap, single peak, light lace boots. May endeavour to leave the ecu try. Warrant issued. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Gordon, Stranraer.
