Particulars concerning persons tchose apprehension is sought trill be inserted in one issue of the ' POT. ICE GAZETTK, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 3. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered the name and address of some person responsible for thr payvent must be given, and the exact conditions be clearly stated. 5. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is souqht for serious offences, and engravings of M/. i/ en property, will be prominently inserted, with detailed particulars, at a cost of 15*. per portrait, and of 7s. 6d. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, including the expense of engraving on wood. 6 Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and, ifthe name of such person herequiredto be inserted, and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of vol ice, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. 7. Warrant issued. 7.— K Division. — For obtaining food aid money by false pretences— GEORGE SMITH, ago 50 to 53, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion dark, hair brown, slight side whiskers, deeply pockmarked; dress, dark check tweed suit and cap, black- and- white tie. Sometimes wears spectcc'es. He repr sents that he is a signal- fitter on the Great Eistern Railway, just returned frcm Yai- montb, and that his boxes are at the station, obtains an fldvnnca until he receives his pay and decamps. NOVEMBER 15, 1895. 8.— X Division.— For embezzlement — JOHN BURTON, age 24, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., stout build, complexion ruddy, hair brown, eyes blue, round face, ruptured left side, wears a truss, leans forward, takes short steps; dress, black reefer jacket and vest, black overcoat, black hard felt hat. lace boots. Supposed native of Birchington- on- Sea, Kent. Information to be forwarded to the Metropolitan Police Office, New Scotland Yard, S. W. AYRSHIRE. 9.— Ayr ( County). — For fraud, at Mauchline and Muirkirk, on 8th July last, and at various places during the past years — JOHN COLE- MAN, alias J. ANDERSON and J. MURRAY, age about 30, height 5 ft. 9 in., stout build, dyspeptic complexion, large features, hair and moustache dark, full dark eyes, prominent nose, smart appearance, walks rapidly, hut with a stiffness in his limbs, speaks with English accent; dress, blue cloth jacket suit, hard felt bat. Carried a large black leather bag containing samples of marking ink, liquid gold, and crown cement, of which he represented he was a manufacturer, having business premises at Leeds and London. He undertook to pay shopkeepers 10s. per month as agents for the pale of his goods, to advertise their businesses in the local newspapers, and to supply show- cases for exhibition, thus inducing them to purchase quantities of the goods ( which are worthless) for cash. He gave addresses at 16A, Portland- crescent, Leeds; 2, Willoughby- grove, Willonghby Park- road, Tottenham ; and 4, Emma- terrace, Wanstead Flats, London, but com- munications to them have been returned through the Post Office. Warrant issued. 10.— Ayr ( County).— For assault with intent to ravish, at Newmilns, 29th ult.— HUGH M'LAUGH- LAN, age 40 to 50, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion fresh, hair and moustache light ( mixed with grey) fresh cut marks on forehead, left eyebrow covered with plaister, speaks with Irish accent; dress, light brown tweed jacket, white moleskin trousers, brown tweed cap, heavy boots. A navvy; likely to seek employment at railway or waterworks. Was traced towards Lanarkshire by way of Strathaven. Warrant issued. 11.— Ayr ( County).— For embezzling £ 18 4s. 8d. at Muirkirk, between 14th May and 4th ult.— JOHN McMAHON, age 24, height 5 ft. 7 in., com- plexion fresh, hair and Blight moustache browri, scar right side of neck; smart appearance; speaks Ayrshire dialect; dress, dark corded jacket and vest, light grey tight- fitting trousers, light tweed cap. A miner's agent. Information to the Chief Constable of Ayrshire, Ayr. BERKSHIRE. 12.— Maidenhead ( Borough). — For stealing, between 27th and 30th nit., 2 casks— WILLIAM HOLLOWAY, alias BILL SMITH, age about 25, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 in., slight build, complexion pale, hair aud slight moustache dark brown, eyes blue very small neck, prominent chin; dress, black striped jacket, pepper- and- salt trousers, pink- and- white silk tie, black hard felt hat, lace boots. A fish hawker; Dative of Newbury, Berks. Occasion ally employed as deputy at common lodging- houses. Warrant issued. 13.— Maidenhead ( Borough).— For s'ealing, 8oh inst., a quantity of carpenter's toils ( recovered) — A MAN, age about 30, height £ ft. 3 or 4 in., com- plexion pale, hair brown, moustache light, eyes blue ; wearing dark jacket, cloth cap; a tramp. Information to Supt. Taylor, Maidenhead. BUCKINGHAMSHIRE. 15.— High Wycombe ( Borough).— For obtain- ing food and lodgings by false pretences— LOUISA WEST ( supposed false), age 60 to 63, height about 5 ft. 2 or 3 in., rather stout build, complexion sallow, hair grey, eyes light blue, very bad teeth ; dress, black Berge skirt, blue blouse, yellow flowers, long dark bine cloth cloak, black plain straw hat, boat shape, trimmed black ribbons, b. rws back and front, wide black lace round neck, laced French kid gloves; wearing a plain gold wedding ring. Calls on clergymen, statiDg she had been a trained hospital nurse, was the daughter of a farmer of South Wales, widow of a grammar schoolmaster at Bath, and had five sons living there, speaks French fluently ; addicted to drink. Supposed identical with MADAME CHANTRIS, see Case No. 21, 6th September last. Warrant issued. Not to be apprehended out of the United Kingdom. Information to Head Constable Sparling, High Wycombe. CAMBRIDGESHIRE. 16. — Cambridge ( Borouah).— For stealing £ 53 17s. 4d.— CHARLES EGGLETON, age 23, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion dark, hair dark brown ; dress, when last seen, dark blue serge coat and vest, light striped trousers, black felt bat, low shoes; carried a brown paper parcel containing clothing. A booking clerk on London and North Western Railway. Absconded lot inst. Warrant issued. 17.— Cambridge ( Borough).— For stealing an overcoat, on 28th ult. ( recovered) — A man, known as " FLUTY," and " MADMAN," age 35 to 40, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., complexion dark, rather red face, hair dark brown, clean shaved, large scar right side of neck; dress, black or blue cloth suit, white cricketing shirt with tarn- down collar, black felt hat. Supposed native of Leicester. Attends race meetings; well known amongst betting men. Information to Chief Constable Holland, Cam- bridge. CHESHIRE. 18. — Nantwich ( County).— For stealing ( bailee), 28th nit., at Crewe, a handcart, painted slate colour, low wheels, 2 ft. 9 in. or 3 ft. high, long narrow body, sides and front can be taken off, " No. 9" marked on front board— JOSEPH BIRTLE, age 19 or 20, height 5 ft. 7 iu., complexion sallow, hair dark; dress, dark cloth jacket and vest, brown corduroy trousers, dark peak cap, supposed old brown overcoat, and lace boots. A rag gatherer ; native of St. Helen's or Wigan. Warrant issued. Information to Snpt. Meredith, Nantwicb. DEVONSHIRE. 19.— Exeter ( City).— Portrait and description of HARRY PEARSE, alias URIAH PEARSE, and HARRY TAYLOR., whose aj prehension is BRECONSHIRE. 14 — Crickhowell ( County). — For stealing, 30th ult., at Brynmawr, a pair of lace boots, tips on heels, nailed all round— A MAN, age about, 40, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 io., slight build, complexion, hair, and moustache dark, ore tooth deficient in upper jaw, impediment in speech; dress, dark monkey jacket, brown vest, daik cjrd trousers, dark cap, with velvet let in top. May be wearing the stolen boots, which are too small for him. A labourer. Stated he was going to Ludlow. Information to Snpt. Winterscn, Crickhowell. A builder's foreman ; native of Woodbury, De / on. Wag at. one time employed at Sileby Workhouse, Yorkshire. Left Exeter, 24th ult., by 10.35 a m train, London and South- Western Railway, for Waterloo. May be accompanied by a woman age about 23, tall and slight. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. Information to the Chief Constable, Exeter. DORSETSHIRE. 20.— Blandford ( County).— For deserting his wife and family — PATRICK WILSON, age 37, height 6 ft , complexion sallow, hair dark, full beard and moustache black, eyes grey, soar on knee, sup- posed left : dress, light tweed coat and vest, dark striped trousers, hind felt h^ t, lowshoes. Native of Stockport. Has served as master tailor in the 52nd Field Battery Royal Artillery. A good coat hand ; may seek employment at largo shops. Warrant issued. Information to Inspector Brown, Blandford. ESSEX. 21. — Chelmsford ( Cunty).— For stealing ( bailee), 16th ult., a long dark grey mixture ulster, band round waist, lined light colour cloth ( nearly new) FLO WERS, age 38 to 40, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., complexion fresh, hair and moutache light brown, eyes blue ; military appearance ; dress, light grey suit and cap, wliite satin tie. Stated he was a stud groom. May seek employment at circuses. Warrant issued. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Somerset, Chelmsford. HAMPSHIRE. 22.— Aldershot scription of FRANK ( County).— Portrait and de- HALL, a Lance Corporal of the Army Service Corps, from which he is a deserter, whose apprehension is sought for ttealing, on 9th inst., £ 15 4s 5d.; 3 cheques on Cox & Cos ( 1 No. A 410597, for £ 17 19s. Hi.; 1 No. A 447256, for £ 14; the other No. 204870. for £ 13 4s. 2d.), all in favour of the Mess President, Army Service Corps ; 1 cheque on the Cap tal and Counties Bank, Jersey Branch, No. F 102560, for £ 4 6s. 8d., in favour of Lt. Parsons; and other cheques on various banks— Age 27, height 5 ft. 4 in., com- plexion fair, hair light brown, e'ean shaved, eyes grey; Bpeaks through his nose, and has a habit of biting his finger nails ; dress, dark blue jacket and vest, dark stripe trousers, blue melton overcoat with velvet collar, black tie ; was wearing a gold signet ring on left 3rd finger. Had with him a brown portmanteau, and a small clothes box. 23.— Aldershot ( County).— For stealing a quantity of zinc, the property of the War Depart- ment— THOMAS GREENER, age 34£, height. 5 ft. 8 in., complexion fair, hair brown, slight moustache, eyes bluish grey, throws his right leg ont when walking. An expert aeronaut. A deserter from the Royal Engineers, in which corps he was Company Sergeant- M^ jor of tbe Balloon Section. FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 15, TS05. TFTF ^ OLICF OAZTTTTE. 3 Absconded 24th nit. HERTFORDSHIRE. 24. — Watford ( County). — For uttering fictitious cheque— ALFRED NEWTON, age about 45, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 in., complexion, hair and moustache dark, has recently had his besrd shaved off, thin features; dress, shabby dark clothes and overcoat, black hard felt hat. Supposed identical with ISAAC or WILLIAM NEWTON, a law writer, at one time employed at Coleman- street, to have proceeded to London on 31st ult., and to have been at Bury St. Edmunds 4th inst. Warrant issued. 25.— Watford ( County).— For embezzlement— WILLIAM DAY, age 19 or 20, height about 5 ft. 7 in., complexion fresh, thin face, hair ( inclined to curl) light brown, clean shaved; dress, rough dark serge coat and vest, dark overcoat, light grey trousers, narrow daik slripes, light cap ( all new). A farm labourer ; native of Welwyn, Herts. Recently discharged from the Army, suffering from varicoso veins. Warrant issued. Information to Capt. Wymer, Deputy Chief Con- stable, Watford. clean shaved, left hand deformed ; drees, light tweed suit, dark cap. Fond of billiards. Information to Snpt. Norn's, Chorley. 32. — Leigh ( County). — For dealing, 21st ult., a dark grey cloth ulster overcoat, black- and- white plaid lining, black bone buttons, usual pockets, belt half- way round waist, " Leigh Co- operative Society" on tab, and a white cotton tie— A MAN, age 21, height 5 ft. 8i in., complexion sallow, hair brown, eyes blue, scar bridge of nose; dress, black jacket and vest, brown striped trousers, elastic side boots, and stolen overcoat and tie. He obtains lodgings, stating b? hns obtained employment in the district, and after staying a short time borrows money under pretence of fetching his boxes from the railway station. Higginbotham, Leigh. 33.— Barrow - in - Furness ( Borough). — For failing to report— Supervisee WILLIAM ERS- KINE, age 21, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion sallow, hair fair, eyes brown, anchor and W. E. on right arm. Sentenced at Belfast. 30th October, 1894, to 12 months hard labour and 2 years police supervision for housebreaking and wounding. 1815. Supervisee FRANCIS KELLY, age 20, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion fresh, hair black, eyes brown, proportionate build, oval face. KENT. 26.— Chatham ( County).— For stealing £ 11— JOHN HEMMINGS, age about 20, height 5 ft. 2 or 3 in., complexion fair, very blight moustache, slight scar about an inch long back of head; dress, when last seen, dark jacket and vest, brown cord trousers, black- and- white neckerchief, brown cap, elastic- side boots. Has worked in D? ptford with a coal trolley, as porter at Covent Garden and Borough Markets, and at Cliffe and Trindesbury as an agricultural labourer. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Lacy, Chatham. 27.— Sevenoaks ( County). — For obtaining £ 10 by false pretences, on 24th and 26th August last— • CHARLES HOLMES, age 45 to 50, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in , complexion fresh, full face, hair brown, slight cast in right eye, soar on right cheek ; dress, short brown coat, lavender- coloured trousers, blaok felt hat. Accompanied by a mm represented to be his clerk, age about 50, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., - complexion, hair, moustache and eyes dark; diess d= irk cloth suit ( morning coat and vest), blue serge cap. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Holmar, Sevenoaks. 28.— Sittingbourne ( County).— For deserting his wite and coildren, leaving them chargeable to the Milton Union-- JAMES TYLER, age 36, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 iu., complexion, hair, moustache, and - eyes dark, small black mark bridge of nose, large scar across back of right hand, which prevents the hand being closed ; dress, black jacket and vest, lavender stripe trousers, dark cap, light lace boots. An engine driver. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Capps, Sittingbourne. 29.— Tonbridge ( County).— For carnally know- ing a girl age 14, on 24th September list.— JOHN BURCHETT, ago 34, height about 5 ft. 2 in., com plexion fair, hiir dark brown, moustache light; dress, blue cloth jacket and vest, black cloth trousers, black leggings, heavy lace boots, peak cap, similar in shape to that worn by the Salvation Army, of which he is a member. Carried a bundle con- taining Salvation Army jersey, & c. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Bartlett, Tonbridge. 30.— Maidstone ( Borough).— For stealing, 26th ult, 7 pairs dark grey corsets— A WOMAN, age about 40, height about 5 fc. 5 in.; dress, black skirt, dark grey shawl, black bonnet. Information to Chief Constable Mcintosh, Maid- stone. LANCASHIRE. 31.— Chorley ( County). — For stealing, 11th inst., at Penwortliam, 3 coins ( recovered), and a 10- rupee note— BOARDMAN BERRY, age abcut 20, 1 eight 5 ft. 7 in, complexion fre^ h, liiir lio- bt, LEICESTERSHIRE. 34.— South Wigston ( County).— For obtain- ing £ 7 by false pretences, on 25th ult.— T WO MEN : 1st, age 35 to 40, height 5 ft. 7 in., square build, complexion pale, broad face, hair dark brown, clean shaved; dress, navy- blue jacket suit, white front and cuffs with gold sleeve links, black tie, hard felt hat; 2nd, age about 30, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., hair brown, moustache light brown, eyes grey, shrewd appearance, walks rapidly. A fluent speaker. Wore similar clothing to 1st, aod coloured tie with black flower thereon. They called at a house and shewed the servants patterns of cloth, calico, flannel, & c., stating they were representing a tradesman of Market Har- borougb, who was in financial difficulties and that a gentlembn at Oadleyhad already advanced £ 10, and if tbe s< rvants would give an order and advance some money, tbey would leave several pieces of cloth as security, and forward remainder next day.
