T H E POLICE GAZETT PUBLISHED BY AUTHORITY- NEW SERIES. FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 27, 1895. VOL. XII., No. 1220 EEGTJLATIONS. 1. All announcement* for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communications upon them should be addressed to THE EDITOB OF TUB POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YABD, LONDON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTK, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 3. Part iculars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions be clearly stated. 5. Portraits of pe rsons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property, will be prominently inserted, with detailed particulars, at a cost of 15s. per portrait, and of 7s. ( id. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, including the expense of engraving on woo l. 6. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not Itssrank than Superintendent; and, if the nameof such person berequiredto be inserted, anil no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. 1. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or nnaloan** thereto. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and are alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causesparticulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to he inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit 1o the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases, the officer signing the request for insertion of any announcement, will be wholly responsible for any proceedings whiih ma•/ result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarc- ed so as to be received not later than noon onWednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only, be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, Kern Scotland Yard, by cheque, crossed " Drummond Sf Co.," Post Office Order payable at Parliament Street, Postal Order, or in Stamps. 13. Advertisements are accepted for the POLICE GAZETTE through Mr. James Willing, U5, Strand, London, the sole Agent, who will furnish the rates on application. 14. Cities and Boroughs therein, arranged in strict alphabetical order. 2.— Any additional oopies of the GAZETTI beyond the number at present supplied will be forwarded on application in the form set forth in circular of the 7th of November, 1883. 3.— It is particularly requested that any oom- plaints as to the non- delivery or of irregularity in t ie date of delivery of the POLIOI GAZETTK, may be a1! once notified to the Editor. The following is a copy of the order which governs the riroulation, by the Metropolitan Police, of advertisements, or reward bills, for the discovery of property or the detec- tion of crime. The Editor inserts it, in hope of preventing delays which sometimes occur in publishing such notices, on account of their not being in accordance with the regu- lations in force in the Metropolis :— 1. Printed hand- bills, or other advertisements, offering a reward for the discovery of property or the detection of crime, whether printed and issued by the Metropolitan Polloe, or distributed and exhibited, with the sanction of the Commissioners, on the application of private persons, if of the Police of any County or Borough, must be e'early N . pressed in relation to the following points— ( à) The amount of the reward. ( á) The conditions on which it is payable, ( o) The person by whom it will be paid. ( d) That the name and address of the printer appear thereon. I. No expression must be used in such an advertise- ment, In relation to property stolen, or criminally taken - jr disposed of, holding out any expectation that the . « ward will be paid on its return without the offender being brought to trial, or without enquiry. • NOTE.— 1 here are 177 Stations of the Metropolitan Police Force at which Notices can be posted. APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT. METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT. 1.— A Division.— For embezzling £ 2 14s. 6d., 19th March last — ALFRED GEORGE HOLE, age 21, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion fair, hair and slight moustache very light, eyes blue, thick lips, small chin, broad high forehead, swinging gait; dress, black morning coat and vest, grey trousers, black harl felt hat, button boots. A native of London. May endeavour to enlist. Warrant issued. N^ t to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. 2.— A Division.— For embezzling £ 3 Is. 3d.— CHRISTOPHER BEAVEN MARKS, age 38, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion sallow, hair dark; stoops ; dress, dark suit, hard felt hat. A native of Bethnal Green. Warrant issued. 3.— E Division.— For stealing 1 half- hoop diamond ring ; 1 gold watch ; and 1 gold enamel chain— ALICE WOOD, age 28, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion sallow, hair and eyes black ; dress, black s^ irt and bodice, black sailor hat trimmed black ribbon, button boots. A domestic servant; native of Eastbourne. Warrant issued. 4 — G Division. — For stealing £ 46 IOJ.— THOMAS ALFRED WILMORE, age about 18, height 5 ft. 4 in., slight build, complexion and hair ( curly) dark, eyes brown, several warts back of neck, lame left l > g; of Jewish appearance; dress, black diagonal cloth jacket and vest, grey tweed trousers, rarrow dark stripes, white collar and tie, black hard felt hat, lace boots. Native of London. Has friends at Stranraer, Scotland. May bo found at sea- side resorts. Warrant issued. 5. — H Division. — For embezzlement — EUGENE KAHL, a Geiman clerk, age 32, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion pale, hair and moustache light, eyes grey; dress, blue serge jacket suit, white collar and scarf, black alpine hat, lace hoots ; stoops when walking. Warrant issued. 6.— J Division.— For stealing, 23id inst., a tin box, 2 ft. 6 in. by 18 in., painted brown, containing 1 black lace cape, bead trimming, black satin bow in froDt, yoke lined red- and- black shot silk ; 1 light fawn dress, pink- and- gold shot silk fro . t, lace ol'ar; 2 black Cashmere skirts ( 1 fancy striped, 1 flounce at bottom) ; 1 cream cotton blouse; 1 cream- and- black ditto, trimmed black braid; 4 aprons ( 2 pink, white spots; 1 cream lace, white Swiss band ; 1 linen, crimson cord ; 1 white lace) ; 2 petticoats ( I white flannel, 1 ditto calico) ; 1 ditto bodice ; 1 piDk woollen vest; 7 books, various titles ; 1 Cash- mere dress, trimmed jet and old gold, buttoned at hack; 1 fawn - and - brown travelling lug; and a lady's brown twill umbrella, bone handle, silver band 1 in. wide MAGGIE ROBERTS, a servant, age 27, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion sallow, thin face, hair light brown, eyes dark brown; dress, light fawn skirt, with 3 rows of black velvet, long jacket to match, fawn cloak with cape, black straw bonnet, trimmed black ribbon and paste buckle. Recently employed at Woburn Sands, Bucks. 7.— K Division. — For indecently assanlting children at Barking— FREDERICK STOKES, age 26, height 5 ft. 4| in., complexion sallow, hair dark brown, eyes grey, anchor, flag, heart and dagger, " True Love," cross, and ring tattooed left arm; dress, dark coat and vest, brown cord trousers, white neckerchief, P. and 0. cloth peak cap, lace boots. Has been previously convicted. Warrant issued. 8.— M Division. — For embezzling £ 138— ROBERT NOBLE, age 50, height 5 ft. 7 in., rather stout build, complexion sallow, hair dark ( turning grey), eye3 grey; dress, navy blue serge suit, flat crown felt hat. Native of Wells, Somerset. A boiler maker. Supposed working at Cardiff docks. Late Secretary of the Sons of Great Britain Friendly Society. Warrant issued. 9.— M Division.— For stealing £ 8- EDMUND FREDERICK ARNOLD, age 19, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion pale, hair black, eyes grey: dress, black jacket and vest, fawn trousers. Native of Jersey. May visit Cowden, Kent. Absconded 14th inst. 10— M Division.— For stealing, 10th inst., a spotted grey cart- horse, 16 hands, 11 je) rs, a stt of bras3- mounted harness, and a covered van ( van recovered) — FRED PEACHEY, age 21, height 5 ft. 11^ in., complexion freib, large features, hhir and slight moustache light, rolling gait; dress, cord sleeve- waistcoat, blue guernsey, cord trousers, blue neckerchief, peak cap, heavy lace boots. Native of Alberry, Hertfordshire. Well known at Bishop Stortford. May be found in company of hay carters in Essex or Hertfordshire. 11.— N Division.— For embezzling £ 4 10s.— LEWIS WALTER SAVAGE, age about 39, height 5 ft. 5 in., stiff build, complexion fair, hair and moustache light brown ; dress, black double- breasted reefer jacket and vest, black hard felt hat. Native of Lewes, Sussex ; a tailor's traveller, soliciting orders in Southern and Eastern Counties. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested beyond the United Kiagdom. 12.— N Division.— For stealing a lady'd silver watch THOMAS, age 27, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion, hair, heavy moustache, and eyes dark, prominent nose, slight impediment in speech; dress, brown check suit, brown hard felt hat, lace bco's. FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 27, 1895. 18.— N Division.— For stealing a piano- organ and barrow — FREDERICK COLLINS, age 20, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion sallow, hair dark brown ; wearing dark clothes, cloth cap. Warrant issued. 11— p Division.— For fraud MARY GIBBS, ^ alias MARY ANN EDWARDS, and DAVIS, age 26, height 5 ft. 3 in., complexion sallow, hair and oyes daik, long chin, small mouth; dress, f- length black cape, with turndown collar, black sorge dress, trimmed 2 rows braid round bottom, large black hit, trimmed largo black feathers. She calls upon servants and represents that she has bo: n sent for money by their mistresses, who aro out o! town. Supposed identical with woman described in Case No. 3, 16th ult. Warrant issued. 15.— T Division.— For maliciously publishing a defamatory libel, on IGth inst. — WILLIAM A. HARRISON, age 37, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion fresh, hair light brown, eyes blue. Warrant issued. 16. — W Division. — For embezzlement — ROBERT COLLIER, age 20, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion fair, hair light, slight light moustache ; dress, dark jacket and vest, light trousers, black hard felt hat. A native of Dover. Warrant issuod. Information to be forwarded to the Metropolitan Police Office, New Scotland Yard, S. W. CITY OF LONDON. 17.— For stealing £ 300— ARTHUR BASNETT, ago about 22, height 5 ft. in., slight build, com- plexion and hair dark, eyes ( full) brown, thick spooch ; dross, black morning coat, dark trousors and vest, black felt hat ( all new). A Scotsman. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. McWilliam, 26, Old Jewry, E. C. BEDFORDSHIRE. 18.— Bedford ( County).— For absconding from the Bedfordshire Reformatory at Turvey, 14th inst. — FRED. C. PALMER, age 10, height 5 ft., com- plexion fresh, hair \ 6ry dark brown, eyes dark, slight impediment in speech, scar on forehead. Native of Wellingborough. HENRY SOWDEN, age 14, height 4 ft. 9 or 10 in., complexion browD, hair light brown, eyes dark brown. Native of Windsor. Both wore round cord jacket, cord vest with jean sleeves, cord trousers, round worsted cap with red stripe ( marked Bedford Reformatory). Information to Supt. Quenby, Bedford. BERKSHIRE. 19.— Reading ( Borough).— For stealing a pony, trap, and harness ( recovered)— A man, who gave the namo of WILLIAM WILSON, age about 22, height about 5 ft. 65 in., complexion sallow, hair and slight moustaohe dark brown, respectable appearance ; dress, dark serge jacket suit, light tie, with horse- shoe safety- pin, black hard low- crowned hat. He Lired the pony and trap on 7th inst., and sold them two houis later, signing the receipt as " W. Lawrence." Stated he lived at Strathfieldsaye. Warrant issued. Information to Head Constable Tewsley, Reading. BUCKINGHAMSHIRE. 20— High Wycombe ( Borough).— For stealing, 21st inst., 1 massive silver bracelet, about H in. band, chased top, plain under side, sprays of vine leaves and " Annie" thereon, fastens with strong clasp ; 1 white silk neckerchief, with red border— A man who gave the name of HAWKINS, age 19, height about 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., slight build, complexion fresh, hair dark brown, moustache very slight, very talkative;; dress, dark blue or black jacket and vest, rough dark brown mixture trousers, dark tie, white straw hat, lace boots, shabby appearance. Stated he came from Bedford to take a situation as a draper's assistant. Supposed identical with HER- BERT TOWNROW, who was sentenced to 4 months imprisonment at Bedford Assizes, on 4th February last, for burglary. Information to Head Constable Sparling, High Wycombe. CARNARVONSHIRE. 21.— Conway ( County).— For larceny ( bailee)— JONAH , age 25 to 30, height about 6 ft., slight build, complexion very pale, hair and moustache light, eyes blue, large Roman nose; dress, grey coat and trousers, white shirt, black hat; wears a white apron. Supposed native of London. He calls at houses and obtains articles to grind, with which he decamps. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Williams, Conway. CHESHIRE. 22.— Oakmere ( County).— For stealing ( bailee), 14th inst., at Tarporley, 1 German silver geneva watch; and 1 German silver centre- seconds stop- watch COLE, age about 50, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion sallow, hair dark brown ( turning grey), eyes ( supposed) blue; dress, black ribbed coat and vest, light cloth trousers ( all much worn), black felt hat, flat top, light lace boots. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Johnson, Oakmere. DORSETSHIRE. 23.— Shaftesbury ( County) — For embezzlement — ERNEST GEORGE MAIDMENT, age22, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion fair, hair light brown, slight light moustache, eyes blue; dress, light coat and vest, light speckled troupers, light cloth cap or black hard hat, stand- up collar, light tie, short dust over- coat. A baker's assistant; native of Mere, Wiltshire. May endeavour to leave for Canada. Absconded 14th inst. Warrant issued. Information to Inspector Elford, Shaftesbury. DURHAM. 24— Sunderland ( Borough).— For failing to report— License Holder GEORGE McPHERSON, alias GEORGE McPHEARSON, GEO. SMITH, and GEORGE DEMPSEY, Office No. 48548, age 27, height 5 ft., complexion dark, hair dark brown, eyes grey, scar each side of forehead, back of neck, back of left hand, on right upper arm, and right side of chest, lost several tieth, N. A. R G. C. front of right forearm, blue dot between right thumb and finger, acne marks all over body. Sentenced at Newcastle, 22nd October, 1891, to 5 years penal servitude for larceny ( person). ESSEX. 25. — Colchester ( Borough). — For stealing, 16ih inst., £ 20— JAMES GIBBONS, age 25, height 5 ft. 8f in., ccmplexion sallow, hair dark brown, eyes blue; dress, black ccaf. and vest, dark trousers. Native of Bassa'eg, Newport, Monmouthshire. A deserter from the Und KiDg's Liverpool Regiment. Warrant issued. Iiiformatiou to Chief Constable Coombs, Col- chester. FLINTSHIRE. 26.— Overton ( County). — For obtaining food and lodgings by false pretencjs— A man who gave the name of PERCY, age from 25 to 30, height about 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fresh, hair and slight moustache dark, bow- legged ; dress, blaik jacket, grey plaid vest, black troupers, cap with patent leather peak, and strap across top, lace boots. Supposed native of South Wales. Warrant issuod. Information to Inspector Pearson, Overton. GLAMORGANSHIRE. 27. — Swansea ( Borough) — For stealing, 13th inst, 1 lady's silver watch, No. 144717; 1 lady's keyless lever watch, No. 32385; 1 silver bracelet with initials " M. D. D." ; and 1 luby glas3 smelling bottle, silver top.— A man who gave the name of PEARCE, age about 30, height 5 ft. 10 in , complexion sallow, short stubby moustache, dark hair ( cut very short), thick lips, good teeth which he shows when talking. Of Jewish appearance and speaks with a foreign accent; dress, dark jacket and vest, light trousers, may be wearing a blue cloth overcoat. 28.— Swansea ( Borough).— For embezzlement. LLOYD PRICE, a clerk, age 35, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion, hair and moustache dark; appearance of a heavy drinker; usually dressed in a drab suit and black hard felt hat. A native of Builth. Formerly Station- master at Devynock. Warrant issued. Not to be apprehended beyond the United Kingdom. Information to Chief Constable Colquhoua, Swansea. GLOUCESTERSHIRE. 29.— Gloucester ( County).— For stealing, 12th inst., from an hotel, 2 gold albeits, small curb pattern, both broken in two pieces ; 1 set of gold studs ; 1 gold chased bracelet, about 1 inch wide ; 1 rather wide gold chased ieeper ring; 1 plain gold dress ring, set 3 imitation diamonds; 1 wide silver bracelet, imitation buckle fa-. teniDg ; 1 gentleman's double- case silver watch, " W. Fryer" engraved inside outer case ; 1 silver curb- pattern albert; 1 set of silver sleeve links and studs to match; 1 set of silver studs, set brilliants— By two m° n who gave the name of " MASON,'' stated they were brothtrs, and part owners of a steamship : 1st, fige 26 to 28, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion pale, hair and eyes dark, moustache brown ; dress, blue serge suit, bowler hat. 2nd, age 24 to 26, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., complexion fresh, bair and eje3 dark, clean shaved ; dress, blue serge suit, usually wears a light felt hat, with dent in top. HERTFORDSHIRE. 30. — Hemel Hempstead ( County). — For deserting his wife and family, leaving them charge- able to the Bemel Hempstead Uaiou — EDWARD BANYON RUSSELL, age 28, height about 5 ft. 7 in., complexion florid ( freckled), h ir and mous tache sandy, eyes blue, walks erect. Has served in the army. Usually wears cloth cap. An advertise- ment canvasser; supposed native of St. Albans. Warrant issued. 31.— Hemel Hempstead ( County). — Fcr deserting his children, leaving them chargeable to tho Hemel Hempstead Union— WALTER PRATT, age about 32, height 5 ft. 10^ iD., strong build, complexion swarthy, hair brown, eyes grey ; walks erect; addicted to drink; dressed as a labourer, wears round cap with peak. Native of Boxmoo •, Hemel Hempstead. Supposed to b3 in tte north of England. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Frogley, Hemel Hempstead. KENT. 32— Ashford ( County).— For failing to rjport — License Holder JOHN COUSINS, Office No. 48370, age 24, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes grey, scar left cheek, 8 on outer right wri-. t, and one inside right knee, J., cro, s, dot, and J. ( indistinct) outside left forearm ; dress, cord trousers, dark tweed jacket and vest, black cloth cap, with shiny peak. Sentenced at Lewes Assizes, 22ud March, 1893, to 3 years pe al servitude for shopbreaking at Eastbourne. Licensed 1st July, 1895. T 120. Information to Supt. Wenham, Ashford. 33.— Canterbury ( County).— For deserting her child, leaving it chargeable to the Union— MARY ANN BATES, alias BEATRICE ROBERTS, and COX, age 23, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., complexion pale, thin face, hair light brown, eyrs blue; dress, navy - blue jacket and skirt, pink blouse, large light straw hat, trimmed flowers. Native of Herne, Kent. Photo may be seen on application. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Wcod, Canterbury. 34.— Dartford ( County).— For stealing £ 100, on 26th July last— THOMAS FISHER, age about 35, height about 5 ft. 4 in., complexion fresh, hair light, moustache sandy, aquiline nose, usually wears glasses, right shin badly ulcerated ( for which he may seek medical aid), stoops when walking, takes long steps, fond of smoking; usually wears grey clothing, hard felt hat, lace boots, carries a walking stick. A bank clerk. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Webster, Dartford. 35.— Dover ( Borough). — For forging a cheque for £ 4 16s. 9d., on the National and Provincial Bank of England, St. Martin- le- Grand Branch, No. D 3262, signed " Edward Jackson," cn 10th inst. — A MAN, age about 40, height 5 ft. 6 in., whiskers and moustache dark; usually dresses as a painter or TTKSBJLY, SEPTEMBER 6, 1895. Ho calls upon tradesmen, presents a cheque, and asks to be obliged with change for a plumber who is in business in the town. See Cases Nos. 2- 5, 27, 28, 30, 47, 48, 49, and 50, 17 th May last. 36.— Dover ( Borough).— For stealing, 16th inst. — A bicycle, No. 8, Peregrine, painted on lower bar, 28 in. driving, 30 in. steering wheel, direct spokes, cushion tyres, marked 297— A MAN, age about 21, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., stout build, complexion fair, hair light brown, moustache light; dress, dark coat and vest, dark brown trousers and cap. Information to Supt. Sanders, Dover. 37. — Margate ( Borough). — For obtaining £ 4 16s. 9d., by false pretences, on 6th inst.— A MAN, age 18 to 20, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., com- plexion fair, hiir light, may be wearing slight moustache; dress, black jacket and vest, brown trousers, skull cap. Appearance of a respectable meohanic. Ho obtains cash from a tradesman in exchange for a cheque, made payable to another tradesman of the neighbourhood, whose endorsement he forges thereto. May be found acting in concert with a MAN, age abont 45, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., com- plexion fair, moustache and side whiskers inclined to ginger; dress, blue serge jacket, white sweater, dark trousers, drab skull- cap. They resided tngother, the elder receiving letters addressed to G. Lee, care of The General Post Office, " to wait unlil called for." Warrant issuod. Information to Chief Constable Farndale, Margate. 38.— Ramsgate ( Borough). — For obtaining monoy by means of a fictitious cheque for £ 4 16s. 9d. on the Finsbury Branch of the London and South Wester tr Bank, Limited— EDWARD JACKSON, alias G. LEE, and W. WHITE, age 40 to 45, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 io., complexion very dark, hair, full beard, and moustache dark ; dress, dark jacket, brown cardigan jacket, dark grey tweed trousers, black hard felt hat.
