All nnouncements for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communications vpon them should be addressed to THE EDITOE OF THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YABD, 2 concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the ' POLICE GAZETTE, ifthei/ are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 3 Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable ' the article in question to be thereby identified. 4 In all cases where a reward is offered the name and address of some person responsible for ' the payment must be given, and the exact conditions be clearly stated. 5 Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property, will be prominently inserted, with detailed particulars, at a cost of 15*. per • portrait and of 7s. 6d. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, including the expense of engraving on wood. 0 Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature ' ofan officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and, if the name of such person be required to be inserted, and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer nf police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. 7 Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank ' than Inspector, nr nvalnaous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property hear a number, and an alphabetically arranged by counties. 0. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion t'. i the next issue. 10. In all cases, the officer signing the request for insertion of any announcement, mil be wholly responsible for any proceedings whuh may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning". They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only, be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, Few Scotland Yard, by cheque, crossed " Drummond 8f Co.," Post Office Order payable at Parliament Street, Postal Order, or in Stamps. 13. The following is a copy of the order which governs the sirculation, by the Metropolitan Police, of advertisements, or reward bills, for the discovery of property or the detec- tion of crime. The Editor inserts it, in hope of preventing delays which sometimes occur in publishing such notices, on account of their not being in accordance with the regu- lations in force in the Metropolis :— 1. Printed hand- bills, or other advertisements, offering a reward for the discovery of property or the detection of crime, whether printed and issued by the Metropolitan Police, or distributed and exhibited, with the sanction of Commissioners, on the application of private persona, ar of the Police of any County or Borough, must be e'early expressed in relation to the following points- fa) The amount of the reward. ( 6) The conditions on which it is payable. ( c) The person by whom it will be paid. ( d) That the name and address of the printer appe& r thereon. 3. No expression must be used in such an advertise- ment, in relation to property stolen, or criminally taken or disposed of, holding out any expectation that the reward will be paid on its return without the offender being brought to trial, or without enquiry. Hack, Fareham. 13.— Southampton ( Borough).— For stealing, 31st ult., 4 £ 50 Bank of England notes, Nos. 94299, 94300, 44564, 44565, by means of the " confidence trick "— 2 men: 1st, age about 36, height 5 ft. 4 in., hair brown, small side whiskers and moustache, large nose, inflamed and pimply ; dress, black frock coat, dark striped trousers, black hard felt hat; an American ; 2nd, age 36 to 40, height about 5 ft. 9 in , slight build, hair dark, beard and moustache cut short, stoops slightly when walking; dress, black suit, coloured tie, black 6oft hat, wearing a gold chain; an Irishman. Both of gentlemanly appear- ance. The American introduced him3alf as a philan- thropist, and described a scheme for alleviating the distress of the poorer classes, adding that he required assistance in distributing the charities at his disposal. At this juncture the Irishman arrived, and tho scheme was recapitulated. The American then asked to be entrusted with whaterer money the others had in their possession, as a guarantee of good faith ( thus obtaining the stolen notes), and,, at the first oppor- tunity, both men decaraped. Their modus operandi is to enter confectioner's or other shops, make a small purchase, usually tendering a half- sovereign in payment; while the change is being given, they endeavour to confuse the shop- keeper and succeed in " ringing the changes."
