POLICE uAZETCJ PUBLISHED BY AUTHORITY. NEW SERIES. FT IDAY, JULY 5, 1895 VOL. XII., No. 1202 1. All announcement a for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communications upon them should be addressed to THE EDITOB OF THE POLICE ' GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YABD, LONDON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 3. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions be clearly stated. 5. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property, will be prominently inserted, with detailed particulars, at a cost of\ f> s. per portrait, and of 7s. Gd. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, including the expense of engraving on woo l. 6. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and, if the name of such person be required to be inserted, and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or nna. lnanus therein REGULATIONS. 8. A nnouncements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and are alphabetically arranged by counties. 0. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLIOB GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmt to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in the next issue. 10. ( O) ( d) The following is a copy of the order which governs the tirculation, by the Metropolitan Police, of advertisements, or reward bills, for the discovery of property or the detec- tion of crime. The Editor inserts it, in hope of preventing delays which sometimes occur in publishing such notices, on account of their not being in accordance with the regu lations in force in the Metropolis :— 1. Printed hand- bills, or other advertisements, offering a reward for the discovery of property or the detection of erime, whether printed and issued by the Metropolitan Police, or distributed and exhibited, with the sanction of khe Commissioners, on the application of private persons, or of the Police of any County or Borough, must be o'early expressed in relation to the following points- la) The amount of the reward, ( b) The conditions on which it is payable, ( o) The person by whom it will be paid. ( d) That the name and address of the printer appear thereon. 2. No expression must be used in such an advertise • lent, in relation to property stolen, or criminally takeD or disposed of, holding out any expectation that the reward will be paid on ita return without the offendet being brought to trial, or without enqoiry. NOTE.— Ihere are 177 Stations of the Metropolitan Police Force at which Notices can be posted. BEDFORDSHIRE. 3.— Luton ( County). — For obtaining £ 2 by means of a worthless cheque— A man who pave tie name of G. LOWTON, and W. H. LOUTON, 125, Prince of Wales- road, Kentish Town, age 55 to 60, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in , thin bui'd, h » ir ( ba'd on top), and moustache turning grey, peculiar light eyes ; dress, dark or black coat and vest, light grey p'aid or large check trousers, r'ark necktie,- silk hat; of gentlemanly appearance and good address. He agreed to take a public- house, and to pay £ 43 for fixtures, drew a cheque fjr £ 45, and obtained the balance. The cheque, No. A 627715, was taken from a book obtained by fraud, from the London and South Western Bank, Kentish Town Branch. Sutton, Slough. 9— Chepping Wycombe ( Borough). — For obtaining £ 2 by fal e pretences, 2nd May last— ALFRED HORLEY, age 27 or 28, height about 5 ft. 10 in., hair and moustache light brown — FRANK HICKEY, age about 30, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in. CHESHIRE. 10.— Macclesfield ( County).— For stealing, 16th ult., at Lyme Handley, a chamois leather bag containicg £ 19- GEORGE DOBSON, ege 35, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, moustache and saoall side whiskers dark; dress, light grey plaid jacket, grey cloth trousers ( with a bluish shade), small check clo'h cap, heavy lace boots. DENBIGHSHIRE. 11.— Denbigh ( County).— For obtaining food and lodgings by false pretences — A man, Riving the name of ROBERT JAMES WILSON, age abont 30, height about 5 ft. 5 in , moustache and slight side whiskers dark ; drees, brown coat with faint green (• tripes, black waistcoat, brown trousers, black hard felt hat, lace boots ( worn), bad with him a grey cap, and carried a check Inverness mackin- tosh. He obtained lodgings from the 8ih to the lOih ult., under the pretence that ho was the son of a contractor at Chester, and had come to make preliminary arrangements for building a house in the neighbourhood, and that the workmen would follow in a few days. Warrant i.- suod. Information to Sapt. Jones, Denbigh. 12.— Wrexham ( County). — For stealing, 9th ult, 2 nearly tew platinum dishes ( weight, 1 about 120 grammes, 1 about 90 grammes) ; I ditto, about 50 grammes, used a little; 1 ditto, about 10 grammes, old; 2 platinum crucibles, nearly new ( weight, 1 about 30, 1 about 20 grammes); a quantity of old platinum in form of 1 or 2 crucibles, and a large platinum boat, N. B.. 1 gramme 15" 43 grs. — WILLIAM RICHARD HARRIS, age 20, height 5 ft. 6 in., stout build, complexion pale, round face, hair light brown, eyes grey, rather pointed chin, rather round- shouldered, carries his head forward aud his hand in trousers pocket when walking, good looking. An analytical student. Will probably endeavour to emigrate to India. Had in his possession a large brown leather bag, " Harris " thereon. Warrant issued. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Vaughan, Wrexham. DURHAM. 13.— Durham ( City).— For stealing, 20th ult, a pair of light blue cloth troupers, and a black coat and vest, fine material— ALBERT PEIRSON, alien WILLIAM SMITH, age 19, height 5 ft. 4j in., complexion fresh, oval face, hair ginger/ tfyes blue, scar left t- yebrow and right of forehead, hull of yaohfc tattooed on right forearm, 5 lines, " love," and dot inside left forearm, indistincf mark back of left forearm, half bracelet and dot left wrist, yacht and sear back of lefc hand, V and 2 marks right bide of chest, sailor, cross, and indistinct mark inside fore- arm ; dress, bluo serge jacket, light mixture vest, light check trousers, blue peak cap ( all much worn). A seaman; native of Lambeth. Was sentenced to one month's imprisonment at North Shields, 13th ult., for larceny, and has been four times convicted at Lambeth Police Court. Has a soldier's certificate of discbarge in his possession. Is tramping his way to London. Information to Chief Constable Smith, City Police, Durham. ESSEX. £ 1 REWARD. 14— Brentwood ( County).— For deserting his wife and children, leaving them chargeable to the Billericiy Union — GEORGE FREDERICK WOOD, a labourer, late of Pitsea, age 31, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 in.. complexion fair, hair brown, moustache and side whiskers light brown, eyes brown, ' G. Wood,'' sailor and crown, tattooed on one arm. Is supposed to be working on the railway near St. John's Wood. The above reward will be paid by the Guardians of the above- named Union for the apprehension of Wood. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Allen, Brentwood. 15. — Chelmsford ( County). — For larceny— FREDERICK STRATTON, age 19, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 iD., complexion fair, hair light; dre s, drabttt jacket and trousers, cloth cap, heavy lace boots. A labourer; native of East Hanningfield. Is sup- posed to have enlisted. Warrant issued. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Somerset, Chelmsford. 16. — Colchester ( County). — For larceny ( servant), at Ciacton- on- Sea, 28th ult.— WILLIAM WADE, age about 34, height. 5 ft. 5 in., complexion fresh, hair and moustache light brown, eyes blue, tattooed on chest and one wrist; dress, black coat and vest, dark blue trousers, black hard felt hat. Has in his possession 2 pairs of breeches, gaiters, and other clothing. Supposed native of Suffolk. Accompanied by a woman, age about 30, height about 5 ft, complexion sallow, eyes dark, scar on nose; wearing a dress of black figured material, black jacket and hat; enciente. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Ackers, Cjlchester. 17. — Grays ( County). — For robbery, with violence — JAMES STILLIWAY, age 20, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., complexion sallow, hair dark, eyes bazel, tattooed on right forearm, globe with wreath, hand- in- hand, bracelet with letters " E. R." ; left forearm, anchor, stars and stripes, cross and nude figure of a female; dress, tight- fitting blue serge ja° ket, blue serge trousers, " P. & O." cap with patent leather peak, lace boots witb hi^ h heels. A ship's fireman; native of Grays. Wdl probably endeavour to get on board ship. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Jordao, Grays. 18— Saffron Walden ( County).— For stealing, 18th nit., from Ugley Post Office, a cash- box, con- t. ining postd orders to the value of £ 5 10s., from Is , unstamped ; a quantity of postage stamps ; a brown leather purse, and £ 3 5s.— TWO MEN : lst, age about 50, height 5 ft. 11 in., hair ( turning grey) and small moustache dark; dress, dark coat and trousers, hard felt hat. 2ud, age 25 to 30, height 5 ft 8 in., complexion, hair aud moustache dark ; dress, old dark jasket and trousers, dark peak cap. Tramp3. They left Saff. oa Walden by 2 8 p. m. train, on 18th inst., for Stratford. Information to Supt. Simmonds, Saffron Walden. GLAMORGANSHIRE. 19.— Swansea ( Borough).— For embezzlement — ROBT. N. MARKER, a tobacconist's traveller, ago 32, height 6 fc, slight build, complexion pa'e, hair and moustache dark brown; dress, usually, dark grey plaid suit, black bowler hat, tennis sliirt with low collar. Absconded 13th ult., and is sup- posed to have booked to Liverpool. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. Informatior to Capt. Colquhoun, Chief Constable, Swansea. HAMPSHIRE. 20.— Bitterne ( County). — For deserting bis children, 16th April last— GABRIEL CHAPMAN, age 34, height about 5 ft. 5 in., complexion fresh, hair aud moustache light, scar under chin, lar^ e lump back of left hand. A ship's plater. Is supposed to be known at. Sunderland and Newcastle- on- Tyne. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Matthews, Bitterne. 21— Portsmouth ( Borough).— For unlawfully pledging articles of jewellery ( recovered).— JENNIE DEKRINGER, alias PHELPS, and BROWN, age about 30, height 5 ft. 3 in., complexion fair, hair dark brown, eyes ( supposed) blue, good teeth; wore dark grey ulster and black straw sailor hat. Was accompanied by GEORGE SIMS, alias DERRIN- GER ( supposed to be her husband), age about 45, height 5 ft. 2 or 3 in , complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes brown. They are well- known at music halls, having travelled the provinces as sketch artists and comedians, and may be found singing on the beach at sea- side towns. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Portsmouth. 22 .— Southampton ( Borough).— For stealing an open- face patent lever watch, No. 56043 ; a long silver neck chain; and a silk handkerchief— GEO. FORDER, age 22, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion dark, hair and slight moustache dark brown, eyes dark; dress, tweed jacket, dirty cord trousers and vest, striped Oxford shirt, cloth peak cap, heavy nailed boots ( down at heel). A navvy. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Berry, Southamp- ton. HEREFORDSHIRE. 23— Weobley ( County).— For breaking into a school, 16th ult., at Penny Park, Clifford, and stealing a lady's open- face silver geneva watch, No. 3397, small long gold guard with ' two lockets attached ( 1 locket containing a man's photograph); 1 lady's dress ring set 3 blue stones, 1 of slightly different shade ; 1 brooch ( half- penny cut out and silvered) ; 1 " Pearson's Weekly " pen ; 1 pendant containing red automatic silver pencil; 2 threepenny pieces with holes therein ; ivory anchor heart and cross; and abiut £ 20— A MAN, sge 20, height 5 ft. 2 in., slight build, sunburnt, hair light brown, weak kneed; dress, blue monkey jacket, dark trousers, bine or black cap, red muffler. The appearance of a tramping labourer. Information to Supt. Ovens, Weobley. KENT. 24— Chatham ( County).— For stealing £ 10— JOHN CHESTER, age 25, height 5 ft. 4i in., com- plexion fair, hair li^ ht brown, eyes blue, tattooed sailor dancing on left forearm, dots on right wrist. A corporal of the Army Service Corps, fr. m which ho is a deserter. Previously employed as a carman ; Dative of St. Giles', London. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Lacy, Chatham. LANCASHIRE. 25.— Chorley ( County) — Escaped from custody of polics at Eccleston, 2nd in6t., charged with larceny— HENRY PORTER, age about 55, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 in., complexion very swarthy, hair turn- ing grey. A labourer. Was seen going in direction of Wigan. Information to Supt. Norris, Chorley. £ 1 REWARD. 26 — Skerton ( County).— For stealing, 24tli ult., at Morecambe, 1 " Globe " pneumatic bicycle, Jenatzy tyre, diamond frame, enamelled black with gold lines, pla'ed parts, ball bearings to all parts, no mud- guard, 30 in. front, 28 in. back wheel, brake, rubbar pedals, front foot rests, hammojk saddle pierced with holes, common bag containing oil can, double alarm bell attached ; 1 bicycle, similar to above, without foot- rests, brake- lever has been taken off— By two men: 1st gave the name of ISAAC DAY, 13, Pontefract- road, Normanton, ago 30, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion and moustache dark; wore a light su't; 2nd gave the name of JOE KAY, 112, Wakefield- road, Normanton, age about 3d, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fair, beard light; wore light suit. Warrants issued. The above reward will be paid by William Bramlrim, West- street, Morecambe, to any person giving such information as will lead to the appre- hension and conviction of the thieves and the recovery of the bicycles. Bryning, Skerton. 27. — Old Swan ( County). — For obtaining £ 340, by fraud— HENRI AUGER, junior, a ship- owner, age ab > ut 43, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., com- plexion fair, hair ( bald on top) light brown or sandy ( turnirg grey at sides and back), slight stubby moustache, eye3 ( small and bright) light brown, large month, prominent lips, good teeth, wrinkled forehead, sloping shoulders, rather nervous when speaking, and h* s a habit of rubbing his hands together ; of smart gentlemanly appearance ; dress, black morning coat and vest, li^ bt stripe troupers, grey summer overcoat, li^ ht tie with ring, brown kid gloves, black hard felt hat, patent leather b. ots, with kid tops; wore 2 gold rings on right little finger ( one set with dark stone) also a silver ring on left little finger ; carried a cross- handle umbrella in black silk cover. A native of Bordeaux. He represented that he was from the firm of Henri Auger & Sons, ship- owners, Bordeaux, on whose behalf he had come to form a shipping alliance, aud required the money to cover business transactions at Birmingham and other placts which he had conducted on his journey from France, tendering as security a bogus bill on a Paris bank. Ormerod, Old Swan. 28. — Ormskirk ( County). — For embezzling £ 4 143., and other monies— JOHN McGORttlN, age 35, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion fresh, hair light brown, eyes blue, no teeth in upper jaw; of smart and inellg- nt appearance; dress, black morning coat and vest, grey tweed trousers, broad cbeck pattern, billycock hat, lace boots. A biker; native of Liverpool. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Jervis, Ormskirk. 29. — Salford ( Borough). — For failing to report— Supervisee WILLIAM MURRAY, alias RICHARD SMETHURST, Office No. 43978, age 37, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes hazel, ecar between eyebrows, 3rd right TUESDAY, JUNE IL, 1 8 9 5 . T H E POLICE GAZETTE. 371 finger slightly contracted, fleshy lamp on left knee. Sentenced at Preston, 17th February, 1892, to 9 months hard labour and 5 yeirs police supervision for larceny. Information to the Chief Constable of Salford. LEICESTERSHIRE. 30. — South Wigston ( County). — For ob- taining money by false pretences — SAMUEL WOOD, alias " CHAFER," age 34, height 5 ft. 10 in., complexion dark, hair dark brown, eyes hazel, Roman nose; dress ( supposed), black jacket and waistcoat, grey check cloth trousers, soft light- coloured hat, with cord band. A native of Barle- stone, Leicestershire. Is fond of boasting of his skill in rearing pheasants. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Ormiston, Sonth Wigston. LINCOLNSHIRE. 31.— Lincoln, South ( County).— For larceny ( bailee), at Bracebridge, 13thMay— ELIZA BOUGH- TON, alias EMERY, age 45, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., stout build, complexion fresh, red bloated face, hair ( inclined to be wavy) and eyes brown, addicted to drink; dress, when last seen, black cape, brown dres3, black straw hat with black banj. Is tup posed to have relatives at Leicester. Was seen at Grimsby on 9th inst. Will probably be found co- habiting with a man. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Cabourn, Kesteven, Lincoln SUFFOLK. 36.— Ipswich ( Borough).— For stealing brass turnings- WALTER JAMES SCOTT, age 33, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., weight abont 11 stone, complexion fresh, hair and moustache dark brown, eyes blue ; dress, light check suit, blue check shirt, white collar, red tic, brown cloth cap, spring- side boots with plain fronts.
