All announcements for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communications upon them should be addressed to THE EDITOR OF THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YAHD, LONDON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 3. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions be clearly stated. 5. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of - toten property, will be prominently inserted, with detailed particulars, at a cost of 15*. per portrait, and of 7s. 6d. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, including the expense of engraving on wood. f!. livery announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of vol less rank than Superintendent; and, if the name of such person be required to i, e inserted, and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or ortalnnons thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and are alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases, the officer signing the request for insertion of any announcement, will be wholly responsible for any proceedings which mat/ result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later thany noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition nut later than Saturday morning. They myrf be clearly written on one side of the paper only, be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. ^ y* 12. APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT. The following is a copy of the order which governs the circulation, by the Metropolitan Police, of advertisements, or reward bills, for the discovery of property or the detec- tion of crime. The Editor inserts it, in hope of preventing delays which sometimes occur in publishing such notices, on account of their not being in accordance with the regu- lations in force in the Metropolis :— 1. Printed hand bills, or other advertisements, offering a reward for the discovery of property or the detection of erine, whether printed and issued by the Metropolitan Police, or distributed and exhibited, with the sanction of the Commissioners, on the application of private persons, or of the Police of any County or Borough, must be c'early expressed in relation to the following points— ( « ) The amount of the reward. ( 6) The conditions on which it is payable, ( o) The person by whom it will be paid. ( d) That the name and address of the printer appear thereon. 3. No expression must be used in such an advertise- ment, in relation to property stolen, or criminally taken or disposed of, holding out any expectation that the Ttward will be paid on its return without the offender being brought to trial, or without enquiry. NOTE.— There are 177 Stations of the Metropolitan Police Force at which Notices can be posted. METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT. 1— L Division. — For stealing, 21st inst., a dark bay mare pony, aged, 11 hands, grey down face; a set of silver- plated harness, " W. K." on 1 blinker, and a light spring tiap, painted black, nicked out red, off- side splash- board broken off— WILLIAM WILLIAMS, alias PRATT, age 26, height 5 ft. 3 in'., complexion, hair and slight mous- tache dark, eyes hazel; dress, black cloth double breasted livery coat, black buttons, black vest and trousers, black hard felt hat, lace boots. Warrant issued. 2.— M Division. — For embezzling £ 1, on 23rd nit. — JOHN DICKENS WAIN WRIGHT, alias ELLIS, age 60, height 6 ft, complexion fresh, hair and whiskers grey, shaved chin, walks erect; of gentlemanly appearance; generally wears dark clothes. A traveller; known to farmers, & c. Warrant issued. 3.— p Division. — For obtaining, 15th inst, £ 2 15s. 9d. by a worthless cheque, signed " Ellen Marcon," drawn on the London and Provincial Bank, 159, High- street, Stoke NewiDgton— A MAN, age 30 to 32, height about 5 ft. 6 in, stout bnild, complexion fresh, hair and moustache light brown; dress, grey tweed suit, high silk or black felt hat. Warrant issued. 4.— w Division.— For stealing a brown mare, 14£ hands; a set of brass- mounted harness ; and a covered van, painted chocolate, picked out red, cover painted yellow, curtains back and front, red wheels, square side lamps, " Robins, Guildford," on caps, " Brooms, Brushes, Ironmongery, and Tin- ware " painted on sides, " Street and Walker" thereon, containing a quantity of brushes, glass tumblers, lamps, sponges, & c— WILLIAM STRUD- WICK, ago 23, height 5 ft. 6 in, complexion palo, hair and eyes dark, moustache auburn, lame on left leg ; dress, grey suit, grey cap or black hard felt hat. A native of Guildford, Surrey. Warrant issued. Information to be forwarded to the Metropolitan Police Office, New Scotland Yard, S. W. ANGLESEY. 5.— Menai Bridge ( County). — For larceny, 9th inst.— JOHN C. ROWLANDS, age about 30, height 5 ft. 5 in, rather stout build, complexion fresh ; dress, dark clothes, brown felt hat, brown boots ( have been blacked, much worn). A clerk. Warrant issued. Information to Inspector Jones, Menai Bridge. BERKSHIRE. 6.— Maidenhead ( Borough).— For stealing a tricycle ( recovered). COOKE, alias PEACE, age about 35, height 5 ft. 8 in, complexion reddisk blown, hair ( short), moustache and eyes dark, well built; of military appearance; dress, blue jacket, grey mixture trousers, light scarf, salmon colour cap, brown shoes. A lag and bone collector. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Taylor, Maidenhead. 7.— Windsor ( Borovqh).— For stealing about £ 20— ANDREW PATTERSON, age 24 and 10 months, height 5 ft. 11 in, complexion fresh, hivir dnrk brown, eyes blue, scar inside left thigh ( 1 in. above knee), malformatioa of right ear, scar left of jaw. A lance- corporal of Lit Scots Guards. Ab- sconded 16th inst. Native of Cookstown, Tyrone. May be accompanied by a woman, who will endeavour to obtain employment at dress and mantle makers. Information to Head Constable Armour, Windsor, BRECONSHIRE. 8. — Brecon ( County). — For burglary, 14th inst, and stealing £ 10— A MAN, age about 35, height 5 ft. 8 in, slight build, complexion fresb, moustache ginger; dress, dark coat and vest, small rib dark trousers, brown bowler hat, which appeared too laige for him, lace boots; had the appearance of a tramp. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Joseph, Brecon. CAMBRIDGESHIRE. 9. — Cambridge ( Borough). — For obtaining money by false pretences on 22od inst.— ARTHUR LINSDELL, age 24, height 5 ft 6f in, complexion sallow, oval face, hair dark brown, ejes hazel, cut scar right of forehtad, cross- swords tattooed left forearm. An Army Reservist of the Suffolk Regiment; native of Cambridge.— HENRY LEE, age 25, height 5 ft. 7\ in, oval face, hair brown, eyes grev, " J. R." tattooed light forearm, " C " back of right hand end forearm, " W. H. A L." and six dots left forearm. Supposed a native of Brighton. May be found hawking flowers or fish, or attend- ing fairs, Ac, in the eastern counties, where Lee may perform with a cask and bottle on his head. Information to Chief Constable Holland, Cam- bridge. CUMBERLAND. 11.— Penrith ( County).— For deserting his family, 4th inst.— ROBERT PURVIS, age 45 to 50, height about 5 ft. 11 in., complexion fair, hair and monstache auburn, eyes grey, one leg shorter than the other; dress, grey tweed coat and vest, blue trousers, hard felt hat, lace boots. A saddler; native of Berwick- on- Tweed or Galashiels. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Russell, Penrith. DEVONSHIRE. 12.— Devonport ( Borough).— For abandoning a girl, age about 4, on 17th inst.— A. PARSONS, alias A. PATSON, age 30 to 35, height 5 ft. 8 in., com plexion fair, sharp features, hair and moustache sandy; dress, grey suit, cord cap, black shoes. Stated ho was a detective from London, and was going to Manchester. Accompanied by a woman, ago 30 to 35, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in.; dress, light colour dress, round rim hat, trimmed brown fur; of good address. They received parcels on approval from all parts of the country, but failed to return either goods or money. Warrant issued. Information to Head Constable Matters, Devon- port. DUMFRIESSHIRE 13.— Dumfries ( County).— For lewd practices— WILLIAM KERR, age 60, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion fresh, hair, beard, and whiskers grey, large spot of white hair on back of head, blind in right eye, which is nearly closed, square shoulders, but inclined to stoop ; dress ( when last seen), dark, tweed suit, black felt hat. A schoolmaster; native of Dumfriesshire. Warrant issued. Not to be apprehended out of the United Kingdom Information to Chief Constable Gordon, Dumfries DURHAM. 14.— Sunderland ( Borough). — For stealing £ 35,25th inst.- THOMAS WILLIAM DAVISON, age 21, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., slight build, com plexion sallow, hair black, slight dark moustache, long neck and very prominent gullet, short- sighted, stoops; dress, black serge jacket and vest, light grey trousers, grey tweed cap. A clerk ; native of Sunderland. May endeavour to go to America. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Huntley, Sunder- land. GLAMORGANSHIRE. 15. — Cardiff ( Borough). — For stealing £ 7 from a till on 20th inst. — CORNELIUS BRIAN, late of Milton- street, Cardiff, age 22, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion dark, oval face, rather large mouth, hair dark brown, small dark moustache, eyes brown, scar top of head and left thigh, ring on 1st, 2nd, and 3rd fingers, blue dot back of left hand, ring on front of right forearm, 3 blue dots front of left forearm. A labourer. May be found in company of prostitutes, and frequents " free and easys " at public- houses. Warrant issued. Information to Head Constable McKenzie, Cardiff. HAMPSHIRE. 16.— Bitterne ( County). — For deserting his wife and children, 23rd ult., at Eastleigh— FRANK DYASON, a shipwright, age 31, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., complexion, hair, whiskers, and moustache dark, eyes supposed hazel; dress, black cloth coat and vest with black anchor buttons, pepper- and- salt colour tweed trousers, black navy cap, blue check navy shirt, navy boots. Native of Whitstable, Kent. Was discharged from the Navy in November last, with a small pension for 21 months. Warrant issued. Information to Snpt. Matthews, Bitterne. 17.— Fareham ( County)..— For embezzling £ 1519s. 4d.— ARTHUR HENRY WOOD, late poor rate collector for Havant Union, age 36, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fair, hair brown, eyes grey; dress ( usually), light check suit, black felt hat, brown leather boots, or may. be wearing knicker- bockers and stockings. A native of Havant. Ab- sconded 17th inst. May seek employmont as clerk. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Brewer, Fareham. 18.— So utham pto n ( Borough).— For obtaining suits of clothes by false pretences OHLY, alias RITCHIE, ALBERTS, and BENSON, age 45 to 50, height about 6 ft., complexion fair, hair light brown, beard and moustache closely cropped, eyes blue, indented scar on cheek ; dress, grey tweed jacket suit, turn- down collar, and scarf with gold ring, soft brown billycock hat, and shoes ; wears a gold albert chain; gentlemanly appearance. A German; speaks broken English.— W. RITCHIE, alias OHLY, ALBERTS, and BENSON, age 24, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion fresh, hair light, very slight moustache, eyes blue, slightly bowlegged, turns his toes in when walking; dress, blue serge suit, light felt hat or tweed cap, patent leather boots ; wears gold albert chain. ' A son of the first described. The latter takes an office in a good business neighbourhood, and trades under the style of " Ritchie & Co., Import Produce Merchants, Bristol, Liverpool, and New York." The first described travels with samples of butter and mar garine, consignments of which they obtain through advertisements in continental papers, and dispose of to tradesmen at 30 per cent, under market value. After obtaining the utmost possible credit from con- signors, tradesmen, & c., they decimp. Ohly left hore on 24th inst., accompanied by his wife, age 45, daughter, age 19, son described above, and two others, ages 17 and 12. Supposed known at Ports- mouth, Reading, Oxford, and Birmingham. Warrants issued. Information to Chief Constable Berry, South- ampton. ISLE OF WIGHT. 19.— Newport ( County).— For stealing, 15th inst., at Freshwater— 1 single - case lever watch, No. 6410, steel face; 1 ditto, geneva— JOSEPH BAWN, a deserter from Royal Artillery, age 23, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes grey; dress, regimentals. A boot- clicker ; native of Oldland, Gloucestershire. Is known at Warmley, near Bristol. Warrant issued. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Gibson, Newport. KENT. 20.— Ashford ( County).— For deserting his wife and family— JONAS LAW, age 32, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion fresh, hair and eyes brown, dark brown moustache ; dress, dark jacket and vest, cord trousers, peak cap, heavy lace boots. A brick layer's labourer; native of Wye, Ashford. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Wenham, Ashford. 21.— Dartford ( County).— For stealing, 4th inst., £ 13 15s. 0d.— WILLIAM CUBITT, age 51, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion very sallow, wrinkle between eyebrows, hair and heavy monstache black, body nearly covered with hair. An iron moulder; native of Ipswich. Warrant issued. 22.— Dartford ( County). — For obtaining food and lodgings by false pretences— A man, giving the name of CHARLES FREDERICK SHAW, age about 29, height 5 ft. 2 or 3 in., complexion rathor dark, hair ( thin on top) and slight monstache light; dress, black diagonal cloth coat, black vest, dark stripe trousers, peak cap with band, small ball badge in front. He represents that he is fixing electric bells at some place in the neighbourhood, and, after staying three or four days, decamps. Is also believed to have obtained money on the pre- tence of obtaining employment for persons on board ships, & c. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Webster, Dartford. 23.— Sandgate ( County). — For stealing, at Hytbe, 22nd inst., 1 set of gold studs, flowered ; 1 pair oblong plated sleeve- links; 1 gold snake breast- pin, set small pearls; 1 silver cigarette- case, initials R. C. H. L. " thereon; 1 lady's small demi- hnnter watch, glass missing; 1 light tweed suit; 1 - white shirt; ltie; 1 Jamaica ebony walking- stick, part black and yellow; 1 plaid cap; 1 pair light lace boots, toecaps, " Capon, Hythe," stamped inside ; several cut stones ( unmounted) ; 1 cameo ; 3 gold safety scarf- pins ( 1 plain, 2 set stones) ; 1 silver English lever watch, j- plate movement, No. 80816, maker " J. W. Benson, London," thick silver curb chain attached; 1 new grey check woollen cycling shirt, Shakespeare collar, " Peter Robinson, London, No. 4," on band ; and a new Swift bicycle, 1894, pattern, Dunlop- Welsh tyres, Wilmore frame, lined gold, horn handles, scored underneath, patent foot rests, neck discoloured by fire, kit- bag attached, con- taining inflator, oil- filler and spanner— WILLIAM MILLWOOD WOODBRIDGE, age 26, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., complexion sallow, hair brown ( cnt close, supposed wearing false i. urly hair in front), small dark moustache ; dress, stolen clothes. Was sentenced to 5 years penal servitude for a military offence, and released from Portland Prison a few weeks ago. Warrant issueJ. Information to Supt. Waghorn, Sandgate. 24.— Sittingbourne ( County).— For stealing from the Officers' Quarters, Royal Artillery Barracks, Sheerness, 1 gold hunter watch, engine- turned cases, monogram " D. D.," on outside case, maker " Emmanuel, Portsmouth," with silver curb pattern chain, silver pencilcase, and cigar- cutter attached— WILLIAM CLARKE, a deserter from Royal Artillery, age 23, height 5 ft. 9 in., com- plexion pale, hair brown, moustache ginger, eyes grey. May be found at Waley Heath, Colchester. Information to Supt. Capps, Sittingbourne. 25.— Maidstone ( Borough). — For failing to report— License Holder CHARLES TAYLOR, alias CHARLES TOILER, and HENRY KING, Office No. 47883, age 57, height 5 ft. 11 in., com- plexion dark, hair dark brown, eyes hazel, scar nape of neck, and top left side of head, scar on right shoulder- blade, and inside right forearm, back of left hand, left toes cramped. Sentenced at Maidstone, 8th January, 1885, to 10 years penal servitude, remanet of former sentence, and 7 years police supervision, for possessing housebreaking implements. Licensed 28th March, 1895. LANCASHIRE. 26.— Bolton ( County).— For stealing, 15th inst. — A blue cloth double- breasted jacket, 2 pockets outside, one inside left breast, black bone buttons, letters " L. & Y. R." stamped on top of sleeve lining — JOHN POVER, alias JOHN HENRY POVER, JOHN HENRY JONES, and JOHN ENTWISTLE,' age 32, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fresh, hair black, eyes brown, abscess under left ear, burn mark right wrist. A native of Sutton Weaver, near War- rington, and has resided at Preston, Rochdale, and Altrincham. Has been convicted of horsestealing at Frodsham. Information to Supt. Lecming, Bolton. 27.— Chorley ( County).— For obtaining money by false pretences, on 25th inst.— A MAN, age about Z5, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion sallow, hair and slight moustache dark, very dark under eyes; dress, black jacket and vest, grey cloth trousers, stand- up collar, print cotton tie, grey or brown cap, brown shoes ; a few days previously wag wearing clogs. He called at houses and represented he was authorised by the landlord to collect rents. Information to Supt. Norris, Chorley. 28.— Hurst ( County).— For stealing, 30th ult., at Denton, a very dark bay horse, about 10 years, 14 bands, star on forehead, - weak on near fore knee, long mane and tail ( rather vicious) ; a spring cart, long body, low sides, wheels 3 ft. high, painted red and recently rc- hooped, spoke in near wheel fastened to felloes with wire, tailboard fastened with rope, shafts made from part of an old wooden bedstead, ' Edward Horsfield, Broker, William- street, Ashton- under- Lyne " on side — A MAN, age about 54, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fresh, hair and whiskers grey; dress, grey jacket and vest, cord trousers, light peak cap, lace boots. Supposed wanted for similar offences elsewhere. Information to Supt. Hewitt, Hurst. 29. — Manchester ( City). — For failing to report — Supervisee ELIZABETH WILLIAMS alias ELIZABETH EVANS, Office No. 46133] age 45, height 5 ft., complexion pale, hair light brown, eyes blue, scar on forehead, mole on right FRIDAY, MAT 24, 1895. T H E POLICE GAZETTE. 5, cheek, vaccination marks on left arm, ears pierced. Sentenced at Manchester Sessions, 23rd May, 1887, to 5 years penal servitude and 7 years police super- vision for larceny. Licensed 24th September, 1891. J N 94. Supervisee EDWIN MORRIS, Office No. 47038, age 47, height 5 ft. 4 in , complexion fresh, hair grey, eyes blu. e, scar on third right linger, several on right hip, one back right thigh. Sentenced at Manchester Sessions, 5th October, 1893, to 12 months hard labour and 2 years police supervision for larceny. 4285. Supervisee JAMES WM. BROWN, Office No. 45475, age 34, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion fresh, hair light brown, eyes grey, scar left of forehead, right jaw, between 2nd and 3rd left fingers, back each hand, outside 4th right finger, inside 2nd and 3rd right fingers, 2 moles baclc left shoulder and each side of belly, " L. A. B." outside left forearm, blue mark bridge of nose. Sentenced at Manchester Sessions, 8th August, 1892, to 15 months imprison- ment and 3 years police supervision for house- breaking. 2594. Supervisee MARY ANN MOONEY, Office No. 44427, age 33, height 5 ft. 2 in., complexion pale, hair dark brown, eyes grey, scar on right forearm, back right hand, large ditto ( burn) right leg, scar left eyebrow, back left hand, and on bridge of nose, mole lelt cheek. Sentenced at Manchester Sessions, 24th October, 1889, to 5 years penal servitude and 3 years police supervision for larceny. Licensed 22nd February, 1893. P 33. License Holder JAMES NEILD, Office No. 47881, age 43, height 5 ft. 8 in , complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes grey, 3 ecars on left eyebrow, 1 on right ditto, 2 on bridge of nose, 1 on left cheek, birthmark left side of neck, 2 vaccination marks on right arm and 4 on left ditto, ruptux- ed right groin. Sentenced at Salford Borough Sessions, 12th June, 1891, to 5 vears penal servitude for larceny. Licensed 23rd March, 1895. C R 1208.
