All announcement!! for insertion in the POLICE G- AZETTE, and all communications upon them should be addressed to THE EDITOR OF THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YAED, LONDON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning personswhose apprehension is sought will he inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be talcen upon them by another force. 3. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions be clearly stated. 5. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property, will be prominently inserted, with detailed particulars, at a cost of\ 5s. per portrait, and of 7s. 6d. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, including the expense of engraving on wood. 6. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and, if the name of such person be required to. be inserted, and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and are alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICB GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases, the officer signing the request for insertion of any announcement, will be wholly responsible for any proceedings ivhich may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only, be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must he in advance, either at the office, JSfeic Scotland Yard, by cheque, crossed " Drummond S; Co.," Post Office Order payable at Parliament Street, Postal Order, or in Stamps. 13. Advertisements are accepted for the POLICE GAZETTE through Mr. James Willing, 12O, Strand, London, the sole Agent, who will furnish the rates on application. 14. Cities and Boroughs therein, arranged in strict alphabetical order. 2.— Any additional copies of the GAZETTE beyond the number at present supplied will be forwarded on ilication in the form sat forth in circular of the appiici 7th of November, 1883. 3.— It is particularly requested that any oom- plaints as to the non- delivery or of irregularity in the date of delivery of the POLIOJ GAZETTE, may be • t once notified to the Editor. The following is a copy of the order which governs the eirculation, by the Metropolitan Police, of advertisements, or reward bills, for the discovery of property or the detec- tion of crime. The Editor inserts it, in hope of preventing delays which sometimes occur in publishing such notices, on account of their not being in accordance with the regu- lations in force in the Metropolis :— 1. Printed hand- bills, or other advertisements, offering a reward for the discovery of property or the detection of orime, whether printed and issued by the Metropolitan Police, or distributed and exhibited, with the sanction of the Commissioners, on the application of private persons, or of the Police of any County or Borough, must be clearly expressed in relation to the following points— ( a) The amount of the reward. ( b) The conditions on which it is payable. { « ) The person by whom it will be paid. ( d) That the name and address of the printer appear thereon. S. No expression must be used in such an advertise- ment, in relation to property stolen, or criminally taken or disposed of, holding out any expectation that the reward will be paid on its return without the offender being brought to trial, or without enquiry. NOTE.— There are 177 Stations of the Metropolitan Police Force at which Notices can be posted. APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT. METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT. 1-— C. I. Department. — For obtaining, 20th inst., by a forged order on the Holborn Branch of the London and Westminster Bank, a chenue book containing 100 cheques, Nos. B C/ B 701701 to 701800— A man giving the name of R. H. GORDON, age about 27, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., slight~.' niid, complexion fair, wore spectacles, pleasant manner ; respectably dressed and wearing high hat, carried a dark brown leather brief bag. Also for uttering one of the above cheques at the same bank on 20th inst.— THOMAS E. MORGAN, age about 40, height 5 ft. 7} j in., rather square shoulders, complexion sallow, hair short, thick mous- tache and slight side whiskers dark ( turning grey), eyes blue, hare lip, causing slight indentation in nose, right leg artificial and walks lame; dress, black morning coat and vest, grey stripe trousers, black felt hat, carried a black stick with silver knob; was employed, until April last, in the Lunacy Office, Royal Courts of Justice. 2.— B Division.— For stealing a horse ( re- covered) — FREDERICK SAUNDERS, age 36, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion fair, hair light brown, lost left eye and wears a dark shade; dress, light brown overcoat, dark trousers and vest, black hard felt hat. Supposed native, of Lincoln. May be found in the company of low horse dealers, and be accompanied by a woman, age about 40, short and dark, and going in the name of Taylor. Warrant issued. age 18, height 5 ft. 7jj in., complexion very fair, hair light, slightly round- shouldered, walks with his head slightly forward and with swaggering gait; dress, grey overcoat or black Inverness mackintosh, black frock coat, low round felt hat. Had with him a Gladstone bag. Warrant issued. 5.— For obtaining £ 2,400 by means of a forged letter o£ credit, cr; i 7th in? t,— LEON PUSCH, a Spaniard, ^ ge about 85, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., very slight build, complexion, hair, and moustache dark, right eyeball discoloured and protruding; of gentle- manly appearance. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. McWilliam, 26, Old Jewry, E. C. 3.— B Division,— For stealing 3 gold chain bracelets ( 1 set diamonds and turquoise, 1 set six pearls, 1 set diamond and sapphire) ; 1 gold scarf pin, set 1 diamond and 3 pearls, shape of a sham- rock ; 1 long gold chain, 11 pearls set at intervals ; 1 lady's dress ring, set diamonds, antique pattern- LUCY KNIGHT, age 35, height 5 ft. 6 in., com- plexion fresh, hair light, eyes grey, front teeth decayed, is far advanced in pregnancy ; dress, black dress, black tight- fitting jacket, black straw hat trimmed with crape. Supposed known at Haywards Heath. Warrant issued. Information to be forwarded to the Metropolitan Police Office, New Scotland Yard, S. W. CITY OF LONDON. 4.— For stealing, 7th inst., 1 gentleman's small gold watch, white dial ( slightly chipped), " W. A. B." on back ; 1 gentleman's silver keyless hunter watch, " Wells, late St. James' Street, Pall Mall," on works; 1 gentleman's single- stone diamond ring, stone slightly brown in colour; 1 lady.' s gold ring, set 6 rubies ( 1 deficient) ; and £ 5 cash— WALTER COLEY, late of 1, Witherington- road, Highbury, AYRSHIRE. 6.— Ayr ( Burgh).— For obtaining by fraud, 1 gold keyless watch, No. 12385, white dial, thick glass, plain case, centre seconds; 1 brown marled tweed jacket suit, " James Robertson " on tab; 1 fawn- coloured waterproofed coat, velvet collar; 1 satin hat, " John Gibson, Hatter, Ayr," therein ; 2 pairs Shetland wool drawers; 2 Shetland wool semmits; 3 linen fronts with collar " John Gibson " thereon ; 3 pairs socks ; 2 scarves; and a light brown leather Gladstone bag with double lock— HUGH FIND- LAY, alias EDWARD DICK, age about 30, height 5 ft. 7 in., hair ( parted near centre and curly) dark, moustache brown, complexion sallow, long thin face, 2 or 3 teeth deficient in upper jaw; dress, dark brown melton overcoat with brown velvet collar, black shooting coat, dark striped trousers, lace boots ( new), and the stolen hat; smart appearance. May be wearing a felt hat, or some of the clothing above described. Wore a gold ring with dark blood- stone on third finger right hand. He arrived in Ayr between 15th and 20th inst, representing that he had come from India; was a medical practitioner, and had come to take up a deceased doctor's business; also, that he had entered into partnership with a resident doctor. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable M'Kay, Ayr. BEDFORDSHIRE. 7.— Biggleswade ( County). — For stealing, 11th inst., 1 black cloth jacket; 1 grey vest; 1 pair stripe trousers; 1 pair boots ( nearly new) ; 1 gold wedding- ring ; 1 gold dress- ring, set pearls; 1 pair earrings, made from lion shillings; I silver watch, ace broken— HARVEY POWERS, a private of 1st Grenadier Guards, height about 5 ft. 11 in., complexion fair, eyes light; may be wearing regi- mental boots, shirt, and socks. FRIDAY, MARCH 29, 1895. 8.— Luton ( County).— For stealing a dark blue melton cloth dress, trimmed brocade ; 1 night dress; and several ladies' pocket handkerchiefs, marked " E." " E. Lever," or " Emelie"— A MAN, age about 26, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., thick- set, com- plexion fair ( sunburnt), moustache light, military appearance; dress, black coat and vest, grey trousers, black hard felt hat, black tie, lace shoes long blue melton overcoat. Stated he had been in the Cape Mounted Rifles, and had recently returned to England.— A WOMAN", age about 25, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., complexion very pale, thin features, very light frizzy hair, eyes sunken; dress, black serge dress trimmed with beads, fawn- colour cheek cape, large black hat, low shoes. Has the appear ance of a shop assistant or barmaid. They gave the name of LECHFORD, and stayed a week at an hotel at Dunstable, leaving there on 15th inst. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Tydeman, Luton. 9. — Bedford ( Borough). — For deserting his children— HARRY SMITH, age 38 to 40, height about 5 ft. 6 in., stout build, complexion fair, mous- tache light; dress, grey coat, dark mixture cloth trousers, hard felt hat, all rather shabby. A plumber. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Thody, Bedford. BERKSHIRE, 10.— Maidenhead ( Borough)— For retaining £ 5 by a worthless cheque— C. REDMAYNE, age about 40, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in,, complexion fresh, hair, whiskers and moustache inclined to sandy, one front tooth noticeable; dress, black morning coat, dark cloth trousers, high hat. Carried a light cloth cap. He represented that he had taken a villa in the neighbourhood and ordered joints of meat, at the same time obtaining the money; on the meat being sent, the house was found to be unoccupied. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Taylor, Maidenhead. BUCKINGHAMSHIRE. 11.— Aylesbury ( County).— For stealing, 5th inst., a mahogany cash- box, containing about £ 15— FREDERICK J. IRELAND, age 29, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion fair, hair ( curly) light brown eyes blue, arms and chest tattooed; dress, dark jacket and trousers, brown cloth cap, dark blue overcoat with velvet collar. A scene painter. Is supposed to have been in the Navy. Warrant issued. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Webb, Aylesbury. CAMBRIDGESHIRE. 12— Cambridge ( Borough). — For stealing, 13th inst,, £ 2 15s., and a lady's silver geneva watch and curb- pattern chain— JOHN WILSON, age 17, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., slight build, complexion fair, hair brown ( parted in centre), large bright blue eyes ; dress, brown check tweed jacket and vest, dark cord trousers ( supposed wearing dark cloth trousers under), blue necktie, small brown plaid cap, lace boots ( nailed). Stated he was a native of London. Has been employed in the Church Army Shelter. Information to Chief Constable Holland, Cam- bridge. CARMARTHENSHIRE. 13.— Llandilo ( County).— For obtaining money by false pretences— DAVID McMURRAY, alias McCRAY and PARRY, age 55 to 60 ( looks younger), height about 5 ft. 9 in., complexion ruddy, hair ( short) and moustache sandy, walks erect; dress, brown coat and vest, dirty cord trousers, light brown cap, lace boots. Speaks with Irish accent. Stated he had been in the Army, and also that he was a native of Belfast. He represented that he was a haulier, and had been deprived of his means of livelihood by the death of his horse. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Philipps, Llandilo. CARNARVONSHIRE. 14.— Bangor ( County).— For obtaining money by false pretences, by the sale of worthless cigarettes, called " Stramonium Cigarettes " ( see Case No. 5, tst inst.)— WALTER SNELL, age about 40, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., stout build, complexion fair, hair light brown. A native of Exeter. He is an asso- ciate of Isaac Da Costa, who is committed for trial at Swindon, Wilts, for a similar offence. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Harris, Bangor. 15. — Pwilheli ( County). — Portrait and de- scription Of WILLIAM HUMPHREYS, whose apprehension is sought for forgery— Age 41, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., complexion pale, hair, full beard, and eyes dark, 2 prominent front upper teeth, sharp metallic voice, and abrupt in speech, leans slightly on one side, and has a peculiar movement of his body when walking; when last seen was wearing riding breeches and gaiters, and a single- peak cap. A gentleman farmer ; native of Criceieth. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable of Carnarvon- shire, Carnarvon, or Inspector Rowland, Pwllheli CHESHIRE. 16.— Oakmere ( County). — For burglary, at Cotebrook Rushton, 19th inst., and stealing 1 pair pebble spectacles, steel rims ; 1 light slate- colour overcoat, black bone buttons, usual pockets, much faded and worn ; and abous 8s. bronze— REUBEN JOHNSON, age 49, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., slight build, complexion dark, thin features, hair ( cut short) dark, turning grey, large grey eyes ; dress, light mackintosh overcoat, rather short cape, dark trousers, hard felt hat, light lace boots, wore a scarf. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Johnson, Oakmere, near Northwich. DENBIGHSHIRE. 17.— Wrexham ( County). — For shopbreaking and larceny— License Holder JOHN PARRY, alias WILLIAM JOHNSON, PERRY, PIERCY, and BURGESS, Office No. 47456, age 36, height 5 ft. 5 in , complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes bluish grey, scar across top of left eyebrow, left side of head ( long), on left upper arm, bottom of spine, centre of back, and several on scalp ; dress, brown jacket suit ( dirty), lace boots ( worn), hard felt hat, white muffler, tied in sailor's knot. Sentenced at Stafford, 13th December, 1889, to 5 years penal servitude for burglary. Liberated on second license, 10th December, 1894, which expires 22nd Nov., 1895. K P 638. Warrant issued. 18.— Wrexham ( County).— For larceny ( bailee) — JOHN EDWARDS, age 24J ( looks older), height 5 ft. 4 in., weight 9 stone, slightly round- shouldered, complexion dark, hair dark brown, small dark moustache, eyes hazel, third toe of right foot slightly deformed. Was a lance- corporal of the Welsh Fusiliers, from which regiment he deserted on 23rd inst., when he was wearing regimentals. Generally calls upon Roman Catholic priests. Warrant issued. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Vaughan, Wrexham. DERBYSHIRE. 19.— Alfreton ( County).— For failing to report — License Holder WILLIAM CAULDWELL, alias JOSEPH HOPKINS, and WILLIAM JOSEPH CAULDWELL, Office No. 45466, age 36, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes hazel, 1 vaccination mark on each arm, scar on right hip, 3rd and 4th left toes webbed. Sentenced at Derby County Sessions, 1st January, 1890, to 5 years penal servitude and 5 years police supervi- sion for larceny. Licensed 1st November, 1893. K Q 101. Information to Supt. Eyre, Alfreton. 20. — Langley Mill ( County). — For house- breaking, 2 ad ult. — SAMUEL WAIN, age 23, height 5 ft 1 or 2 in., slight build, complexion pale, hair dark brown ; wearing, when last seen, blue oloth oveicoat, light jacket, felt hat. A native of Belper. Warrant, issued. Information to Supt. Daybell, Langley Mill. DEVONSHIRE. 21.— Exeter ( County).— For failing to report— Supervisee THOMAS MURPHY, alias MURRAY, KELLY, and MARTIN FINNIGAN, Office No. 47409, age 26, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes grey, cut scar right eyebrow, and scar ( bite) calf of right leg. ( See Case No. 22, ^ lst December, 1894). Sentenced at Bideford Borough Quarter Sessions, 7th June, 1894, to 6 months hard labour, and 4 years police supervision for larceny. 256. Information to the Chief Constable, Devon Constabulary, Exeter. DORSETSHIRE. 22.— Wareham ( County).— For deserting his wife and family, leaving them chargeable to the Wareham and Purbeck Union— WILLIAM HENRY STRONG, age 26, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., complexion fresh, hair and moustache light sandy, eyes ( large) blue ; is fond of drink ; dress, when last seen, dark brown tweed suit, black bowler hat. A baker ; late of Swanage, which place he left on 16th Jan. last. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Carter, Wareham. HAMPSHIRE. 23.— Winchester ( City).— For obtaining food and lodgings by false pretence — FRANCES TOOMEY, alias FRANCES HILL, age 39, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., complexion pale, hair nearly black, eyes supposed dark grey, deeply pockmarked ; dress, black dress, brown mackintosh, brown felt boat- shaped hat with black band, brown shoes. Was at Fareham, on 14th inst., begging, when she stated she was going to Guildford. See Case No. 27, 28th December last. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Felton, Winchester. 24.'— Portsmouth ( Borough). — For obtaining food and lodgings by false pretences— WILLIAM STEVENSON, age about 50, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion sallow, thin features, hair light brown, moustache ( cut short) light, one front tooth broken off, appeared very deaf; dress, lounge suit, dark blue rib overcoat, brown felt hat, green tie, new lace boots ( broad soles) ; wore a silver watch chain with Maltese cross attached, and a silver horse- shoe pin; carried a bamboo cane with small dagger inside. He engaged rooms for himself and his brother, representing that he belonged to the Coventry Cycle Company. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Portsmouth. HEREFORDSHIRE. 25.— Hereford ( County).— For stealing a silver watch ( bailee)— CHARLES CARTER, age 36 to 40, height 5 ft. 11 in. or 6 ft., rather slight build, complexion fair, hair light brown, small side whiskers and moustache light, stoops slightly; dress, grey coat, cord trousers, grey cap. A drover; generally has a dog with him. Warrant issued. t Information to Deputy Chief Constable Smith, Hereford. ISLE OF WIGHT. 26.— Sandown ( County). — For stealing, 5th inst., at Ventnor, £ 40 in notes and gold— FRED. LANGFORD, age 17, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., slight build, complexion fair, hair brown ( curls in front) ; FRIDAY, MARCH 29, 1895. THE POLICE GAZETTE. 3 dress, black overcoat, velvet collar, large black bone buttons, light jacket suit, and skull cap. A footman or waiter. Has relatives in London, Plymouth, Ryde, and Southsea. Warrant issued. Information to Inspector Ayres, Sandown. LANCASHIRE. 27.— Bury ( County).— For failing to report — Supervisee HENRY CUDWORTH, alias HENRY JOHNSON, age 40, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes grey, slightly pockmarked, scar outside 1st and 3rd left fingers, and inside left thumb, mole back of neck. Sentenced at Salford Sessions, 23rd October, 1893, to 15 months hard labour and 1 year police supervision for larceny. 11632. Information to Supt. Noblett, Bury. 28.— Ormskirk ( County).— For obtaining money by false pretences, at Formby, on 18th inst.— A MAN, age about 50, height 5 ft. 11 in., slight build, complexion fresh, hair dark ( turning grey), impedi- ment in speech ; dress, dark double- breasted jacket, dark trousers, cap, blue front and tie. He took lodgings, stating he was employed by Government to fix telegraph wires, and, after obtaining the money, absconded. Information to Supt. Jervis, Ormskirk. 29.— Liverpool ( City).— For failing to report— License Holder THOMAS JONES, alias BATES, STOREY, BAYNES, JOHN OWEN, and CLARKE, Office No. 47838, age 65, height 5 ft. 4 in., com- plexion fresh, hair white, eyes grey, scar on right eyebrow, bridge of nose, and large ditto on right shoulder. Sentenced at Manchester City Sessions, 10th December, 1891, to 3 years penal servitude and 3 years police supervision for larceny ( person.) Liberated on 2nd license 14th inst. F R 166. License Holder JOHN SMITH, alias LUMB, and WILLIAMS, Office No. 47843, age 43, height 5 ft. 2 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes blue, scar bridge of nose, left side of forehead, and right side of throat, mole back of neck. Sentenced at Liverpool Assizes, 26th July, 1888, to 7 years penal servitude for burglary. Released on second license 14th inst. O 348. 30.— Liverpool ( City).— For failing to report- Supervisee ANNIE MCPHERSON, alias MAR- GARET ANNIE WILLIAMS, Office No. 47237, age 29, height 5 ft., complexion fresh, hair light brown, eyes blue, JOE outside right arm, scar back of left hand. Sentenced at Proston Sessions, 11th May, 1894, to 6 months imprisonment, and 1 year police supervision for larceny ( person). 171— 10. 31.— Liverpool ( City).— For horse- stealing- ABRAHAM DAWSON, alias KELLET, & c., age 46, height 5 ft. 5^ in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes grey, scar left of forehead and back of left hand. A horse dealer; native of Leeds. Was sentenced to 9 months imprisonment at Leeds Sessions, 12th April, 1880, for larceny from th& person; to 12 months, at Devon Assizes, 24th July, 1884, for horse- stealing; to 18 months, at Wakefield Sessions, 17th October, 1887, for obtaining money by false pretences, all in name of Abraham Dawson; and to 18 months at Newcastle Assizes, 18th February, 1891, for obtaining money by false pretences, in name of Abraham Kellet. Warrant issued. Information to the Head Constable, Liverpool. 32. — Manchester ( City). — For failing to report — Licence Holder JOHN DALEY, alias JOHN DAVIES, Office No. 47444, age 62, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes blue, scar on temple, each shoulder- blade, inside 2nd and • 3rd right fingers, on right knee, inside left thigh, and on left foot.
