POLICE GAZETTE PUBLISHED BY AUTHORITY. NEW SERIES. FRIDAY, JANUARY IS, 1895. VOL. XII, No. 1154 BEG- XJLATIONS. 1. All announcement!! for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communications upon them should, be addressed to THE EDITOR OF THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YAHD, LONDON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will he inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable act ion to be taken upon them by another force. 3 Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4 In all cases where a reward is offered the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions be clearly stated. 5. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property, will be prominently inserted, with detailed particulars, at a cost of 15.*. per portrait, and of 7s. 6d. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, including the expense of engraving on wood. 6. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must he guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and, if the name of such person he required to be inserted, and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen properly bear a number, and are alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted tn the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the KdUor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases, the officer signing the request for insertion of any announcement, mil he wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwaraed so at to be received not laterthan noonon Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only, be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either ni the office, Xeic Scotland Yard, by cheque, crossed " Drummond Sf Co.," Post Office Order payable at Parliament Street, Postal Order, or in Stamps. 13. Advertisements are accepted for POLICE GAZETTE through Mr. James Willing, 125, Strand, London, the sole Agent, who will furnish the rates on application. 14. S.— It is particularly requested that any oom- plaints as to the non- delivery or of irregularity in ihe date of delivery of the POLIOI GAZETTE, may be at onoe notified to the Editor. SPECIAL NOTICE. FUGITIVE OFFENDERS. A case has come under the notice of the Editor, in which a person whose apprehension was sought in England, and who was described in the POLICE GAZETTE, gave himself up to the Colonial Police. The prosecutor declined to take any further action in the matter, but the case necessitated the dispatch of two telegrams, the cost of which had to be refunded by him. To avoid such expense, the Editor requests that if there is reason to believe that a fugitive offender is likely to go to the Colonies, and the prosecutor is unwilling to incur any expense with a view to obtain his surrender, a notification be made in the communication sent to this Office to the effect that the offender is not to bo arrested beyond the United Kingdom. The necessity for the adoption oi such a course will be apparent from the fact that the POLICE GAZETTE LP circulated in the Colonies. APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT. METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT. 1-— C. I. Department-— For stealing a blank cheque on the Shoreditch Branch of the London and County Bank, and forging same, thereby obtaining £ 250, 17th ult.— WALTER BURTON ( supposed false), age about 33, height 5 ft. 6 in., slight build, complexion fair ( slightly fresh), hair light brown, slight moustache light, eyes blue; wearing brown or dark overcoat, black felt hat, stand- up collar, lace boots. Also with being concerned in uttering same— Mrs. BURTON ( supposed false), age about 30, height 5 ft. 2 in., complexion fair, full face, hair ( cut short and frizzy) light auburn ; dress, generally, dark costume and jacket, feather boa, hat trimmed with green. And a MAN, said to be the woman's brother, age 28 to 30, height 5 ft. 10 in, broad shoulders, com- plexion fair; wearing dark ulster with cape, and black felt hat. 2 — C Division.— For obtaining by fraud, 21st ult, a traveller's wooden sample case, covered with shiny black leather, bound with brass; and a traveller's sample basket, both about 3 ft. 6 in. by 2 ft. 3 in, and 2 ft. 6 in. deep, containing samples of cloth; also £ 5 10s. cash — H. CROFTON ARNOLD, a commercial traveller, age 27, height 5 ft. 6 in, slight build, complexion pale, hair light, slight moustache, deep voice; well educated; of smart appearance, and good address; wearing black frock coat, high silk hat, low turn- down collar, long bow. Warrant issued. 3.— c Division. — For absconding from his bail whilst on remand for obtaining goods by forged notes on the Plymouth Dock Bank— ARTHUR HASLER, age 26, height 5 ft. in, complexion pale, hair dark, eyes hazel, three upper front teeth deficient, rather prominent lips, stammers slightly; dress, dark brown Newmarket overcoat, speckled tweed trousers, white tie, fancy woollen gloves, black hard felt hat, lice boots. Of good address. Is fond of relating his hunting experiences. A native of Chichester. Warrant issued. 4.— c Division.— For forging and uttering a banker's cheque for £ 90 on the St. James'- square Branch of the London and Westminster Bank— WALTER JAMES COX, alias COCKLES, age 28, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in, complexion, hair, moustache, and eyes dark; dress, black coat and vest, dark trousers, hard felt hat. Is fond of billiards and cards. Warrant issued. 5.— G Division. — For stealing jewellery— HENRY MORTYN, age 26, height 5 ft. 7 in , com- plexion pale, hair dark, eyes grey ( very weak), no ejebrows; dress, dark grey tweed suit, hard felt hat. A working jeweller; native of London. Is supposed to have left King's Cross for Scotland on 2nd inst, accompanied by his wife and a child of eight months. Warrant issued. 6.— N Division.— For stealing money and clothing — DANIEL LAYTHORPE, age 26, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion fair, short whiskers and monstache light; dress, black coat and vest, dark striped trousers. A ship's steward. May visit Rope Walk, Maldon, Essex. Warrant issued. 7.— V Division. — Woodcut portrait and de- scription of JOHN HENRY REYNOLDS, whose apprehension is sought for stealing £ 212, age 30, height 6 ft, slight build, complexion sallow, hair, moustache ( curled at ends) and slight side whiskers dark brown, square shoulders, carries his head forward, has a peculiar twitching of the eyes when speaking; dress, dark Chesterfield overcoat, pepper- and- salt colour suit, black hard felt hat, low shoes; wears a gold presentation watch with name, & c, engraved thereon. Is accompanied by A WOMAN, age 21, height 5 ft. 8 in, complexion fresh, hair ( bushy in front) deep auburn; dress, heavy woollen mixture dress trimmed with fur, large black hat, trimmed bla- k feathers, mauve- and- black flowers. It is supposed that they are passing as Mr. and Mrs. Ray. Warrant issued. Information to be forwarded to the Metropolitan Police Office, New Scotland Yard, S. W. 4 T H E POLICE GAZETTE. TUESDAY, JANUARY 15, 1895. BERKSHIRE. 8.— Reading ( Borough).— For stealing a basket containing a pearl card- case and other articles from the Great Western Railway Station on, or about, 2nd Nov. last— SARAH GREEN, alias SMITH, height • 5 ft. 5 in., slight build, complexion fresh, hair dark, thin face, high cheekbones ; dress, old bluo serge Bkirt, imitation sealskin jacket, dark sailor hat with velvet band, grey fur tippet, low shoes. Has with her a child about 6 months old. She left Reading on 13th ult. for Oxford, where she stated her husband was livirg. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Tewsley, Reading. 9. — Windsor ( Borough). — For larceny— JOSEPH HOLTON, age 34, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion floiid ( blotched), hair brown, eyes blue; • is addicted to driik; dress, dirty dark clothes. A rag and hone co lector ; native of Windpor. Warrant, issued. Information to Head Constable Armour, Windsor. BUCKINGHAMSHIRE. 10.— Stony Stratford ( County).— For steal- ing, 7th inst., a No. 2 Crescent Safety Bicycle, thick red pneumatic lyres, tangent spokes, laced, black enamelled, stout drop- handle bar— makers, " Sayer & Co., Crescent. Birmingham"— A MAN, age about 25, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., complexion and hair dark, clean shaved; dress, short blue jacket, dark trousers, blue cap, brown boots. Information to Supt. Lait, Fenny Stratford. CHESHIRE. 11.— Hyde ( County).— For obtaining money by false pretences— C. E. WIN WARD, age 35 to 40, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion dark, hair dark brown, eyes brown, wearing dark overcoat, brown felt hat, lace boots. He represented himself as a traveller for Pamphilon & Co., Publishers of " The Complete Business Register," Congleton. Warrant issued. Information to Captain Lingard, Supt., Hyde. DEVONSHIRE. 12.— Barnstaple ( Borough).— For embezzling £ 4 3s. 3d.— JOHN GLASS, age 34, height about 5 ft. 9 in., stout build, complexion fresh, full face, hair and moustache light, speaks with slight lisp, walks very erect; dress ( when last seen), dark coat, grey trousers, dark peak cap. A labourer; native of Barnstaple. Has served 12 years in the Army. Supposed accompanied by a woman, age 26, stout build; dressed in dark clothes. Warrant issued. Information to Head Constable Eddy, Barnstaple. DORSETSHIRE. 13.— Poole ( County).— On commitment warrant for non- payment of fine and costs for aggravated assault— FRANK SAUNDERS, age 30, height 5 ft. o^ in., rather slight build, complexion fresh, h- air light brown, eyes hazel; dress, dark clothes, black bowler hat. A gasfitter; native of Poole. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Hains, Poole. 14.— Shaftesbury ( County).— For night poach- ing, 30th ult.— HENRY HARRIS, age 30, height 5 ft. 5 in., stout build, complexion fresh, hair brown, small side- whiskers and moustache, eyes blue, anchor and flags tattooed left arm. Is fond of step- dancing in public- houses. Has travelled with a boxing booth. A notorious poacher, and has been previously convicted in Dorsetshire, also in Glou- cestershire and Wiltshire. Warrant issued. information to Inspector Elford, Shaftesbury. 15.— Weymouth ( Borough).— For failing to comply with an order under the Married Women ( Maintenance in Case of Desertion Act), 188G ( airears due amounting to £ 42) — MICHAEL JAMES GRIFFIN,,?. late of 105,' Grange - road, Birkenhead, age about 28, height 5 feet 10 in., slight build, complexion fair, hair brown; sometimes wears glasses; generally dressed in light suit. A journeyman baker. Was last heard ofj'at Cam- berwell. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Eacock, Wey- mouth. ESSEX. 16.— Brentwood ( County).— For obtaining clothing by false pretences, 7th inst.— GEORGE SLYTIIE, age 18, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fresh, hair sandy, eyes blue, birthmark right thigh. An officer's groom ; late of Warley Barracks. May enlist. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Allen, Brentwood. HAMPSHIRE. 17.— Winchester ( City).— For obtaining food and lodgings by false pretence — FRANCES TOOMEY, alias FRANCES HILL, age 39, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., complexion pale, hair nearly black, eyes supposed dark grey, deeply pockmarked ; dress, black dress, brown mackintosh, brown felt boat- shaped hat with black band, brown shoes. She stated she had property at Trowbridge, which her solicitor was about to dispose of for her. Warrant issued. 18— Winchester ( City).— For stealing, 14th inst., a silver open- face watch, No. 36075, white metal curb pattern albert, with watch- key, a 12- anna piece, and a dark stone in swivel attached— ALFRED PAYNE, age 34 to 36, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 in., complexion, hair, and moustache dark, very dark eyebrows, eyes deeply sunken; dress, double- breasted pilot coat, black vest, grey trousers, light tie, black cap with leather peak, lace boots ; a native of Rye, Sussex. Information to Supt. Felton, Winchester. HEREFORDSHIRE. 19. — Bromyard ( County). — For stealing clothing— A MAN, age about 36, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., stout build, round- shouldered, complexion fair, hair light, moustache and tuft on chin ; dressed as a labourer and wearing leather leggings. Information to Supt. Lewis, Bromyard. 20.— Ledbury ( County).— For obtaining by false pretences, 13th ult, a new dark stripe suit of clothes — THOMAS JONES, age 29, height 5 ft. in., slight build, complexion fresh, hair dark brown, small dark moustache, eyes hazel, long face, round shouldered, turns his feet out; dress, dark stripe tweed suit, Shakespeare collar, black hard hat, strong boots. A miller's cart driver; native of Sulsley, Worcester. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Phillips, Ledbury. HERTFORDSHIRE. 21.— Hertford ( County).— For embezzlement and falsification of accounts — WM. FRANCIS, late of Hitchin, age 40, height 5 ft. 7 in., com- plexion fresh, hair ( turning grey) moustache, and slight whiskers dark, eyes hazel. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Parish, Hertford. 22.— Ware ( County).— For game trespass— THOMAS ROBINSON, age about 24, height about 5 ft. 6 in., hair dark, clean shaved, shabbily dressed; may be found working at gasworks. Warrant issued. 23.— Ware ( County).— For non- payment of bas- tardy arrears— WILLIAM WARREN, age 26, height 5 ft. 2^ in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes grey. A native of Widford, Herts. May be found with hay- carters, or employed as labourer by market gardeners. Warrant issued. Information to Capt. Wymer, Superintendent, Ware. 24.— St. Albans ( City). — For obtaining £ 10 10s., by a fictitious cheque, on 11th inst.— STANLEY, age about 38, height 5 ft. in., complexion sallow, moustache, and slight side whiskers dark ; wearing dark overcoat, with velvet collar, silk faced, and silk hat. Ho called at a villa, stating he had taken th& adjoining one, and asked to be recommended to some good tradesmen, and afterwards used the name of the person on whom ho called, on a cheque on the London and South- Western Bank, which was cashed for him by one of the tradesmen. Warrant issued. Information to Head Constable Blatch, St. Albins. 25.- ISLE OF ELY. - Whittlesea ( County). — For larceny — JOHN THOMAS STUBBINS, age about 23, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., complexion pale, hair brown, " mall moustache; dress, light brown jacket and vest, light cloth trousers; carrying a small bundle. A tramp- ing baker; native of Barford, Norfolk. Warrant issued. Information to Inspector Burrows, Whittlesea. KENT. 26.— Sandgate ( County).— For stealing, 24th nit., at Shorncliffe Camp, a gold open- face geneva watch, makers—" Barraud & Lund, Cornhill," thin gold cord guard attached— GEORGE BROOKS,, age about 45, height 5 ft. 8 in., slight build, com- plexion sallow, hair brown, slight light moustache ; dress, shabby black coat and vest, black diagonal trousers, low crown bat, lace hoots.— GEORGE AUBREY, age about 35, height 5 ft. 5 in., com- plexion dark, hair ( long) black, moustache and side whiskers turning grey; dress, black coat and vest, dark tweed trousers, black felt hat. Both are tramp- ing tailors, and may be found nt a military station. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Waghorn, Sandgate. LANCASHIRE. 27.— Bolton ( County).— For stealing, 27th ult., at Farnworth— 12 gold wedding rings, various sizes, all stamped 22- ct. " S. H."— A MAN, age about 40, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 in., complexion, hair, and mous- tache dark ; dress, dark clothes, soft black billy- cock hat, narrow brim, red- and- black scarf. He called at a jeweller's shop and asked to see some wedding rings, and was shown a box contain- ing 12 ; after comparing them with a brass ring, lie said they would not suit, and while the shop assistant was getting more, decamped with the box, leaving a purse containing pieces of coal, & c. on the counter. 28.— Bolton ( County).— For stealing, 27th ult., at Deane— 1 gentleman's black worsted frock coat, black bone buttons, faded and worn ; 2 sateen shirts, 1 red- and- white, 1 red- white- and- blue striped, grey calico lining, turn- down collars; 2 cotton shirts, 1 red- white- and- bluc, 1 red- and- blue, narrow stripes; I pair men's watertight lace boots, hob- nailed; I grey cloth cap— A MAN, age about 40, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., complexion, hair, and side whiskers dark, large cut scar or lump over one eye; dress, dark cloth coat, cord vest, dark striped trousers. Maybe wearing stolen boots and cap. Appearance of a tramping ostler. Information to Supt. Leeming, Bolton. 29.— Hurst ( County).— For failing to report- Supervisee MARY BESWICK, alias WEST, JONES, and ALICE BRADLEY, Office No. 39432, age 62, height 4 ft. 7 in., complexion sallow, hair grey, eyes grey, scar on each cheek, mole left of nose, lost all npper teeth. Sentenced at Salford, 9th January, 1888, to 12 months hard labour and 7 years police supervision for larceny. 2507. Information to Supt. Hewitt, Hurst. 30.— Leigh ( County). — For embezzlement at Newton — THOMAS HIGGINS, age 26, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion sallow, hair and moustache light, large mouth, large teeth; dress, old dark clothes, hard felt hat, lace boots. He left Newton, 21st ult., booking to Liverpool, and is supposed to have gone to Belfast. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Higginbotham, Leigh. 31.— Rochdale ( County).— For embezzlement — ROBERT ROBERTS, recently clerk to the Chamber Colliery Co., Limited, Hollingwood, age 28, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion sallow, hair, side whiskers, and moustache brown, 3 white dots on left side of face; dress, black worsted jacket and vest, dark mixture trousers, p° ak cap, and shoes. TUESDAY, JANUARY 15, 1895. T H E POLICE GAZETTE 5 A native of Ruthin. Speaks with Welsh accent. Formerly employed at Westminster Colliery, Dwersyllt, near Wrexham. Will probably feek employment at a colliery office. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Heywood, Rochdale. 32.— Wigan ( County).— For unlawfully wound- ing, 10th inst., at Middle PJace Collieries, Ashton— A MAN, age about 26, height 5 ft. 8 in., slight build, small dark moustache, two small recent scars on one cheek; dressed as a navvy. May seek employment at collieries or public works. Information to Supt. Brassington, Wigan. 33.— Liverpool ( City).— For failing to report— License Holder GEORGE WHITE, alias ALFRED WALTON, Office No. 47222, age 41, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes grey, anchor, crown and star inside right forearm, bugle, wreath, crossed flags, and star inside left arm, scar left and centre of forehead, and bridge of nose. Sentenced at Manchester Sessions, 16th June, 1892, to 3 years penal servitude and 3 years police super- vision, for stealing a cash- box and money. Licensed 13th November, 1894. S 237. Information to the Head Constable, Detective Department, Liverpool. 34. — Accrington ( Borough).— For stealing, 13th inst., a rough brown overcoat, with cape attached — A man who gave the name of DR. CLARK, who stated he had come from America, and was looking for some people for whom he had some presents; age about 38, height 5 ft. 7 in., slight build, complexion fair, moustache light, bald top of head ; dress, black coat, brown tweed vest, black trousers, brown billycock hat, low shoes. Stated his parents resided at Bradford. Information to Chief Constable Beattie, Accring- ton. 35.— Oldham ( Borough).— For failing to report — Supervisee PHILLIP JOHNSON, alias PHILIP CALLENDER and PETER DOWNS, Office No. 45740, age 40, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion pale, hair light brown, eyes blue, burn mark bajk of neck, mole right shoulderblade and on right breast. Sen- tanced at Northampton County Sessions, 6 th April, 1893, to 9 calendar months hard labour and 3 years police supervision, for obtaining food and lodgings by fa'se pretences 3790. Information to Chief Constable Peacock, Oldham grey), moustache brown, scar under chin, 2 at back of head, rather flat- footed; dress, black coat ( with tail pockets) and vest, brown cord trousers, red- and- white check scarf, light grey peak cap, blucher boots. Has served in the Army, supposed Medical Staff Corps. A native of Morpeth. Formerly lodged at 28, Canal- 3treet, Derby. May endeavour to leave the country. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Challon, Newark. carries his hands in his pockets; dress, w be a last seen, new brown tweed jacket suit, high bat, drab gaiters, lijjht lace boots. Has with him a square black portmanteau, containing an old tweed suit, and a bat- box, containing a black felt hat. A native of Bervie, Kincardineshire. LINCOLNSHIRE. 36.— Epworth ( County).— For stealing a silver stop- watch, centre seconds, steel hands, white dial; a black worsted coat, bound with braid ; and a hard felt hat— WALTER, alias THOMAS CURTIS, age about 30, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion fresh, hair, slight moustache, and side whiskers dark brown ; slightly bow- legged. A traction engine driver. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Arnold, Epworth. 37.— Gainsborough ( County).— 2nd ult., for larceny ( bailee)— AND AS PEARSON, age 33, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., complexion pale, hair light brown, clean shaved, scar on bridge of nose ; dress, grey tweed suit, hard felt hat; may now be wearing blue overcoat. A watch and clock cleaner. Is fond of horse racing. Warrant issued. Information to Sapt. Edgley, Gainsborough. SHROPSHIRE. 40.— Oswestry ( County).— For absconding 6th ult., from Morda Union, and stealing a moleskin jacket and vest, brown cord trousers, hard hat, a pair of blucher boots, and a truss, siz9 35 inches, for right side— JOHN SMITH, an Irishman, age 63, height 5 ft. 11 in., complexion and bushy monstache dark. B." and two bees as trade mark, " U. H. S. & Co., London & Melbourne," stamped on tab, light brown plaid suit, trousers buttons stamped " R. C. Hagon, Sydney," blue tie with white spots, light lace boots. Found in pockets— a plated match- box, 2 storks stamped on each side; 1 2- blade knife, stamped " Thos. Turner & Co."; 1 pair steel framed eyeglasses. The post- mortem examination showed deceased had been shot behind the right ear, and a large size revolver bullet was found in the brain. Photograph may be obtained on application. The following articles have been found, which are believed to have been the property of the deceased :— A nickel case French watch, with silver chaiD, fancy fetter pattern, and pendant composed of 4 small pieces of dressed granite, two colours, cut and fitted into a half- inch square, snch as usually worn by granite masons as a specimen of workman- ship ; a black American cloth hand- bag, with iron frame and nickel slides, containing a pocket cork- screw ; an umbrella, with 25- iD. Fox's frame, cherry- wood crutch handle; 7 small Australian opals, uncut; a British bull- dog revolver, five chambers, stamped " W. Jelfery & Son, 12, George- street, Plymouth." Information to Supt.
