Part it \ I/, J rs concerning persons whose apprehension is sought mil be inserted in one issue of the POLICE ( P, I ETTB, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 3. Part hilars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the ar/ ijle in question to be thereby identified. 4. In ult o- tses where a reward is offered the name and address of some person responsible for the pigment must be given, and the exact conditions be clearly stated. 6. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stoti. r. property, will be prominently inserted, with detailed particulars, at a cost of 15s. per portrait, and of 7s. Gd. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, including the expense of engraving on wood. 6. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and, if the name of such person be required to be inserted, and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and art alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases, the officer signing the request for insertion of any announcement, will be wholly responsible for any proceedings whic/ i mat/ result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only, be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, by cheq- je, crossed " Drummondjf Co.," Punt Office Order payable at Parliament- st., Postal Order, or in Stamps. 13. Advertisements are accepted for the POLICE GAZETTE through Mr. James Wilting, 125, Strand, London, the sole Agent, who will furnish the rates on application. 14. IB) SPECIAL NOTICE. FUGITIVE OFFENDERS. A case has como under the notice of the Editor, in which a person whose apprehension was sought in England, and who was described in the POLICE GAZETTE, gave himself up to the Colonial Police. The prosecutor declined to take any further action in the matter, but the case necessitated the dispatch of two telegrams, the cost of which had to be refunded by him. To avoid such expense, the Editor requests that if there is reason to believe that a fugitive offender is likely to go to the Colonies, and the prosecutor is unwilling to incnr any expense with a view to obtain his surrender, a notification be made in the communication sent to this Office to the effect that the offender is not to be arrested beyond the United Kingdom. The necessity for the adoption of such a course will be apparent from the fact that the POLICE G A' JSTIS ip circulated in the Colonies. APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT. METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT. 1.— c. l. Department.— For forgery and fraud in Cyprus — ETIENNE BAPTISTE VITALIS, age 38, beight 5 ft. 8i in., stout build, complexion florid, hair, beard ( cropped close), and moustache ( turning grey) light, eyes steel - grey, supposed defective sight, always wears spectacles, aquiline nose, slightly deaf; speaks English ( with a lisp), French, Greek Turkish, and Italian. A clerk. Absconded on or after 22nd September last, from Smyrna. Provisional warrant issued. 2.— C Division.— For stealing 1 gentleman's gold English lever watch— maker, " W. Pearson," No. 1861 ; 1 gentleman's 22- carat thick double- link pattern albert; 1 chased gold pencil- case; 1 gold locket, " G. C. C." thereon ; 1 lady's silver repeater keyles* watch; 1 small gold albert; 1 long jet brooch, set small diamond— ALICE TREADWELL, age 22, height 5 ft., complexion fair, hair and eyes dark; dress, dark clothes. A native of Graveaend. Warrant issued. 3. — C Division. — For larceny ( trick)— BELFIELD LAMB, age 26, height 5 ft. 7 in, complexion fresh, hair and moustache very dark, eyes dark brown ; dress, dark grey suit, black over- coat, hard felt hat. Warrant issued. 4— C Division.— For embezzlement — J. W. ROBSON, age about 28, height about 5 ft. 8 in., complexion fair, hair light. A native of London. Warrant issued. 5.— C Division. — For stealing £ 189 in bank notes, cheques and gold— JOSEPH FITZGERALD, age 25, height 5 ft. 4 in , complexion dark, round face, pointed chin, hair and small moustache dark ; dress, black morning coat, grey mixture trousers, black hard felt bat. 6— E Division.— For obtaining £ 300 by fraud — JAMES GRIFFITH, age 40 to 50, height about 5 ft. 8 in., complexion and eyes grey, hair ( cut short), dark, turning grey. Well dressed. Of Turkish appearance. Warrant issued. 7. — E Division.— For fraud and forgery— FREDERICK CHARLES HANSON, age 26, height 5 ft. 6 in., slight build, long body, com- plexion pale, prominent chin, hair dark brown, very small blue eyes, which he screws up when talking ; walks with a long stride ; dress, long black morning coat, dark trousers and vest, black bowler hat. A native of Huddersfield. Warrant issued. 8. — E Division. — Woodcut portrait and de- scription of HERBERT CHARLES BROCK, late in the employ of the National Guardian Assurance Company, whose apprehension is sought for em- bezzling £ 600 — Age about 43, height 5 ft. 10 in., stout build, square- shouldered, complexion florid and blotched, hair brown ( thin and turning grey), stoops slightly, well dressed ; wears spats, and occasionally Wellington boots. Warrant issued. 9. — T Division.— For embezzlement— CHAS. JASON CHAMP, age 22, height 5 ft. 11 in., thin build, complexion sallow, hair dark, clean shaved ; dress, light tweed suit, long brown ulster, hard felt hat, patent leather boots. A timber merchant's clerk ; native of Upper Clapton. Absconded 23rd September, 1894. Warrant issued. Information to be forwarded to the Metropolitan Police Office, New Scotland Yard, S. W. CITY OF LONDON. 10.— For stealing £ 20— DONALD GREEN, late of 30, Red Lion- square, Holborn, W. CAMBRIDGESHIRE. 12. — Cambridge ( Borough). — For larceny, 27th ult.— HENRY JONES ( supposed false), age about 35, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion, hair and moustache dark, cast in one eye ; dress, dark over- coat and vest, light cloth trousers, fawn- color hard felt hat with flat brim CARROL, age about 35, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., stout build, complexion, hair and moustache dark, good teeth; dress, blue serge suit, braid down seam of trousers, black hard felt bat. Supposed to have recently returned from America. Supposed travelling thieves attending race meetings. Information to Chief Constable Holland, Cam- bridge. CARDIGANSHIRE. 13.— Aberystwyth ( County).— For obtair- ing money by false pretences— WILLIAM CLARKE, age 35 or 40, height about 5 ft. 11 in., slight build, complexion pale, hair brown, moustache light brown, stoops slightly; dress, dark coat and vest, dark stripe trousers, blue tie with white spots, lace boots. An upholsterer; native of Warwick. Is well known at Birmingham, Coventry, Warwick, and Swansea. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Evans, Aberyst- wyth. CARNARVONSHIRE. 14.— Bangor ( County).— For stealing a watch ( recovered)— A MAN, age about 30, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., complexion fresh, hair light brown ; dress, dark jacket and vest, dark blue trousers, black hard felt hat, Wellington boots. A painter; was em- ployed by the L. & N. W. Railway about 5 years ago, but has since been a sailor. Information to the Supt. of Police, Bangor. CHESHIRE. 15.— Chester ( County).— For larceny from lodgings— LOUISA ALLAN, age 22 to 26, height 5 ft. 3 in., complexion fre3h, hair dark, lringe in front, very good- looking, two upper front teeth slightly overlap; dress, navy- blue dress, trimmed broad black braid round bottom, navy- blue serge bodice, waistcoat pattern, blue serge three- quarter cape, low shoes. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Cheshire Constabulary, Chester. 16.— Runcorn ( County).— For stealing, 6th inst., 1 silver lever watch ; 1 silver albert, curb pattern ; and 1 seal, set red or blue stones— ERNEST TAYLOR, age about 16, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., com- plexion sallow, hair light brown, cast in eyes ; dress, blue jert- ey, blue cloth trousers and vest, cloth cap, and clogs. DORSETSHIRE. 17.— Weymouth ( Borough).— For stealing, on 25th ult., £ 6 10s.— GEORGE PAIN, age 21, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes haze), arms and chest tattooed. An able seaman, be- longing to H. M. S. Alexandra, at Portland. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Eacock, Wey- mouth. DURHAM. 18.— Barnard Castle ( County).— Portrait and description of FRANK WILLIAMS, alias CECIL WILLIAMS, FRANCIS LYNDHURST, LYN- DERS, EDWIN TORODE, and THOS. TORODE, whose apprehension is sought for stealing, on 22nd nit., 1 lady'n gold dress- ring, 15- carat; 2 silk pocket- handkerchiefs ( I red and green, the other silvery and pink)— Age about 27, height 5 ft. in., complexion fresh, large nose, hair brown, eyes hazel, large stab scar right side of posterior, small scar on forehead, indistinct tattoo marks on both arm3, blue dot on back of each hand, ring 2nd finger left hand ; dress, light coat and vest, light striped trousers, light cloth cap, low shoes. Is identical with Man, Case No. 86, 2ad March, and No. 38, 20th July last. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Thompson, 13a- nard Castle. 19.— South Shields ( Borough).— For embezzle- ment, between 24th August and 5th ult.— ERNEST JOHNSON or FAIRISH, age 28 to 30, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion fair, thin face, hair and slight moustache light, small eyes; dress, black jacket and vest, blue- and- grey stripe trousers, black hard felt hat, short light overcoat; sometimes wears fawn- colored cycling suit and light cap; of gentle- manly appearance. ESSEX. 20. — Chelmsford ( County). — For night- poaching, 18th ult., at Buttsbarv — FREDDY BROOKS, alias SHELLEY, SMITH, BROWN, and LITTLE BOB, age 35 to 40, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., stout build, rather full face, high cheek- bones, clean shaved; dress, dark monkey jacket, light fustian or cord trousers. A navvy; usually em- ployed on public works. Has two lurcher dogs. Warrant issued. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Somerset, Chelmsford. GLAMORGANSHIRE. 21.— Cardiff ( Boroug/ i).— For stabbing with intent to do grievous bodily harm, 22nd ult.— WILLIAM YOUNG, alias YORKIE, and SOMER- SET BILL, age 28, height 5 ft. 9 in., stout build, hair ( long) dark brown, thick dark moustache, eyes dark brown, mole right side of face, large scar back of one hand ; dress, dark suit, coloured silk muffler, black hard felt hat. A navvy or pit- hand; native of Fiax Bourton. Warrant issued. Information to Head Constable McKenzie, Cardiff. GLOUCESTERSHIRE. 22.— Fishponds ( County).— For stealing a pair of trousers, by housebreaking — License Holder GEORGE TAYLOR, alias GEORGE WILLIAMS, EDWARD TAYLOR, and WILLIAM THOMP- SON, Office No. 46444, age 31 ( looks older) height 5 ft. 3 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes hazel, scar 1st left finger and outer corner left eye, 3 moles right side of belly, 1 top of left shoulder. A native of Colerne, Wilts. Sentenced at Wells, 15th July, 1890, to 5 years penal servitude and 5 years police supervision, for housebreaking, after previous con- victions at Tiverton, Dorchester, Exeter, and Bodmin. Licensed 25th May, 1894. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Matthews, Fishponds, near Bristol. HAMPSHIRE. 23. — Aldershot ( County). — For stealing a cheque- book ( see Case No. 54, 5th ult.)— A MAN, age about 40, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., complexion pale, hair dark brown, moustache dark, low fore- head ; respectably dressed, and wears a high hat. Has the appearance of a German Jew, and speaks with a foreign accent. He recently took apartments at two places, and obtained goods from various parts of the country, and then decamped. He has also uttered cheques on the Northern Banking Company, Lirniiel, taken from the stolen cheque- book. The notepaper used by him bore the crest of the Army Service Corps, signing his name as T. Ewart, Capt., and using visiting cards, on which was printed Capt. Thos. Ewart, York and Lancaster Regt., United Service Club. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Stephen- son, Aldershot. KENT. 24.— Gravesend ( Borough).— For false pre- tences— JABEZ ALLEN, age about 45, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., stout build, complexion fresh, full face, side whiskers ( turning grey), left foot deformed ; dress, check suit, black hard felt hat. May be found at fairs and other places frequented by low horse- dealers. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Thornton, Graves- end. 25.— Sandgate ( County).— For neglecting his children, leaving them chargeable to the Elham Union— WILLIAM CUFFLEY, age about 44, height 5 ft. 10 in., rather stout build, hair and moustache dark. Supposed of unsound mind, and may bo found in an asylum or union. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Waghorn, Sandgate. 26.— Tonbridge ( County). — For stealing 20 books nf gold leaf; 11 gilders' brushes; and 2 burnishing stones— DAVID URRY, alias BANKS, and COLLINS, age 40 to 45, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., complexion ruddy, hair dark brown, full beard, whiskers, and moustache ; wears his hat a little on one side ; dress, black jacket and vest, dark cloth trousers, black hard hat, light brown tweed overcoat. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Bai- tlett, Tonbridge. LANCASHIRE. 27. — Chorley ( Cou? ity).— For failing to report— Supervisee EDWARD McCARTY, Office No 33919, age 35, height 5 ft. 2 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes light blue, scar back of neck, left side and bridge of nose, on right shin, right side of belly., and under left breast ( small), blue spot right elbow and outside right forearm, part ring 3rd left finger. Sentenced at Preston Sessions, 17th October, 1883,. to 5 years penal servitude and 7 years police super- vision, for larceny ( person). Information to Supt. Norris, Chorley. 28. — Manchester ( City). — For embezzling £ 500— JOHN SMITH, age 33, height 5 ft. 10 in., complexion fair, hair and slight moustache light, large nose, scar on forehead, several front tteth missing; dress, dark suit, long rough dark overcoat, hard hat. Warrant issued. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Smith, Manchester. 29.— Liverpool ( City).— Supervisee THOMAS HUGHES ( see Case No. 24, 2nd inst.), not now wanted. LINCOLNSHIRE. 30. — Sleaford ( County). — For larceny, 31st July last— WILLIAM RYDALL, alias WE I D ALL, age about 40, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., complexion sallow, hair, moustache and side whiskers dark, scar on face, badly ruptured; dress, check jacket and vest, cashmere breeches and leggings, two- peak cap. Also had with him a black coat and vest. A tramping groom, and seeks employment as a horse- breaker. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Taylor, Sleaford. A tramping tailor; native of Huddersfield. He was accompanied by A MAN, age about 23, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in.; dress, old brown suit and cap, old boots ; a tramp. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Baldwin, Docking. 32— East Dereham ( County).— For stealing, 17th ult, a front- steering tricycle, plated top stays, 3 wheels, 30 in. by f in., red tyres, nearly new, plain pedals, square rubbers, rubber handles, enamel worn off frame, one spoke broken left wheel, piece cut out of tyre of one hind wheel, foot rest broken off left side— ISAAC ABBS, age 21, height about 5 ft. 10 in., slight build, complexion fresh ; dress, blue serge suit, light necktie, turn- down collar, hard black hat, lace boots. OXFORDSHIRE. 33.— Oxford ( City).— For stealing, 30th ult,, a dust- coloured overcoat; also obtaining food and lodgings by false pretences— A MAN, age about 50, height 5 ft. 10 in., heavy moustache dark ; dress, drab overcoat, fustian trousers. Had in his pos- session a cheque for £ 3 17s. 6d., payable to George Davis. Information to Chief Constable Head, Oxford. about 35, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., square shoulders, very small feet, complexion sallow, hair dark, large moustache dark; dress, black coat and vest, light trousers, black hat, tan shoes, occasionally wears a long dark overcoat. Of gentlemanly appearance. He took a furnished house at King's Heath, and on morning of 1st inst. hired a conveyance and took the piano tc an auction room in Birmingham, and disposed of it, where he disposed of another piano and a brown horse cob, 3 years, 15 hands. He is accompanied by two women— lst, age about 27, height about 5 ft. 5 in., slight build, complexion pale, hair light brown ; dress, light plaid mackin- tosh with cape, Hut- brown straw hat with broad brim, trimmed light brown ribbon, high bow in front, about 6 months advaiced in pregnancy. Has with her a child about 12 months old. Passes as Mrs. Spencer.— 2nd, age about 28, height about 5 ft. 5 in., slight build, sharp features, red nose, hair dark brown; dress, short black jacket, red dress, black straw hat trimmed black ribbon, brim turned up all round. Passes as servant to the above. Wherever he may be staying he will advertise in the local paper for a furnished house, letters to be ad- dressed to paper office. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. RADNORSHIRE. 34.— Rhayader ( County).— For failing to report— Supervisee WILLIAM JOHNSON, alias WILLIAM WILD, GEORGE WALKER, WILLIAM ESKEY, and WILLIAM SOUTHERN, Office No. 47034, age 51, height 5 ft. 7 in., com- plexion fresh, hair brown, eyes brown, scar 2nd left finger, coal mark over left eye, large nose. A labourer; native of Manchester. Sentenced at Nottingham, 4th December, 1893, to 10 months hard labour and 2 years police supervision for larceny. Information to Sergeant Jones, Rhayader. SHROPSHIRE. 35— LudlOW ( County).— For forgery and em- bezzlement- JOHN PEACOCK, age 52, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion florid, hair dark, turning grey, eyes dark, bloated appearance, very nervous speaks in hesitating manner, looks downwards when walking, little fiDger of light band contracted; generally dressed in black worsted coat and vest, dark grey cloth trousers, black hard felt hat. A bank cashier; native of Shrewsbury. Left by train at noon on 2nd inst. May endeavour to leave the country. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Hayward, Ludlow. STAFFORDSHIRE. 36.— Tettenhall ( County).— For housebreaking — EDWARD DAVIS, age 36, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., complexion dark, hair and eyes dark brown, side whiskers and moustache turning grey ( about a fort- night's growth) ; dress, dark pilot coat, cardigan jacket, old black vest, corduroy trousers, black hard hat, heavy laue boots, old coloured neckerchief, native of Compton, Wolverhampton. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Cook, Tettenhall. YORKSHIRE ( EAST RIDING). 39.— Howden ( County).— For stealing a horse ( recovered), 22nd ult.— A Man, known by the name of " SOLDIER TOM," age 25 or 26, height about 5 ft. 8 in., complexion fair, hair light; dress, long dark melton cloth overcoat, the top button, which fastens the collar, is horse- shoe shape; military appearance. Travels the country with shows, & c. Warrant issued. Information to Inspector Cooper, Howden. 40. — Sheffield ( City). — For stealing £ 40 between 20th and 28th ult.— GEORGE BARRETT, alias HARRIS, a navvy, age about 24, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., clean- shaved ; dress, black velvet jacket and vest, light grey stripe trousers, light brown cap, light lace boots, light tie. A native of Cambridgeshire. May seek employment on public works, & c. Warrant issued. Information to Capt. Gurney, Chief Constable, Hull. embezzlement— 40 to 45, height 41.— Sheffield ( City).— For WILLIAM ALLCHURCH, age 5 ft. 11 in. or 6 ft., complexion pale, bushy beard and moustache dark brown, hooked nose, with mole on right side; dress, grey mixture or black cloth suit, black felt hat, dark overcoat. A clerk or cashier. He left, 20th ult., for London. Warrant issued.
