W. 2. Particv/ ij rs concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE O. ZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 3. Part " Uars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the ar/ iile in question to be thereby identified. 4. In oil eases where a reward is offered the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions be clearly stated. 5. Pot traits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stuh. r. property, will be prominently inserted, with detailed particulars, at a cost of 15$. per portrait, and of Is. 6d. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, including the expense of engraving on wood. 6. Eneri/ announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and, if the name of such person be required to be inserted, and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to he apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and are alphabetically arranged by counties. g. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases, the officer signing the request for insertion of any announcement, will be wholly responsible for any proceedings whic/ i may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not- later than Saturday morning. They mutt be clearly written on one side of the paper only, be in the usual form, and accompanied by o covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, by cheq- je, crossed " Drummond Sf Co.," Post Office Order payable at Parliament- st., Postal Order, or in • Stamps. 13. Advertisements are accepted for the POLICE GAZETTE through Mr. James Willing, 125, Strand, London, the sole Agent, who will furnish the rates on application. 14. Cities and Boroughs therein, arranged in strict alphabetical order. 2.— Any additional copies of the GAZETTE beyond the number at present supplied will be forwarded on application in the form set forth in circular of the 7th of November, 1883. 3.— It is particularly requested that any oom- plaints as to the non- delivery or of irregularity in the date of delivery of the POLIOI GAZETTE, may be at once notified to the Editor. SPECIAL NOTICE. FUGITIVE OFFENDERS. A case has come under the notice of the Editor, in which a person whose apprehension was sought in England, and who was described in the POLICE GAZETTE, gave himself up to the Colonial Police. The prosecutor declined to take any further action in the matter, but the case necessitated the dispatch of two telegrams, the cost of which had to be refunded by him. i To avoid such expense, the Editor requests that if there is reason to believe that a fugitive offender is likely to go to the Colonies, and the prosecutor is unwilling to incur any expense with a view to obtain his surrender, a notification be made in the communication sent to this Office to the effect that the offender is not to be arrested beyond the United Kingdom. The necessity for tho adoption of such a course will be apparent from the fact that the POLICE GAZETTE is circulated in the Colonies. APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT. METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT. 1.— C Division.— For obtaining £ 31 and two gold rings by false pretences — FREDERICK THOMAS CHRISTOPHER GRIFFIN, age 33, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion florid, hair and eyes dark brown, 3 moles centre of breast, mole right slioulderblade, pimple front of lobe left ear, 2 scars on testicle ; dress, dark clothes, black hard felt hat, respectable appearance. A native of Torquay. Sentenced at Central Criminal Court, 14th September, 1885, to 5 3- ears penal servitude for forgery. Warrant issued. 2.— N Division.— For stealing a gentleman's silver English lever watch— JOHN DUTCHESS, age 58, height 5 ft. 7 in , complexion sallow, hair dark ( turning grey), eyes grey, scar on forehead and left eyebrow ; dress, dark grey dust coat, dark tweed trousers, black hard felt hat, old side- spriDg boots, with broad toes. Native of Hingham, Norfolk. Warrant issued. 3.— N Division.— For larceny— H. TURNER, alias SPECK, age 27, height 5 ft. 6 in., slight build, complexion fair, thin face, hair and slight moustache light, eyes blue ; dress, black morning jacket, light trousers, brown Alpine hat. An oil and colourman's manager, and has managed a shop at Chatham and New- road, Gravesend. Warrant issued. Information to be forwarded to the Metropolitan Police Office, New Scotland Yard, S. W. CITY OF LONDON. 4.— For embezzlement— GEORGE WILLIAM COX, late of 30, Henry- street, Pentonville, age 22, height 5 ft. in., hair dark, very slight moustache ( if any), heavy dark eyebrows; dress, dark jacket- suit, or brown ulster and low felt hat. Wartfcnt issued. 5. — For perjury— EDWARD LANE, late of Sheep- street, Bicester, age 35 to 40, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., well built, complexion fair, hair and mous- tache light, has lost one front tooth ; smart appear- ance ; dresses well. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. McWilliam, 26, Old Jewrv E. C. brown ; dress, navy- blue serge suit, black hard felt hat, light spotted or striped tie ; carried a pair of tan glove3. A native of Rochester. His modus operandi is to call on clergymen, doctors, < fcc , and, on finding them out, asks that he may write a note, stating that he is the son of the late Canon Burrows, of Rochester, and, npon gaining admittance, steals any article of value that may be lying about. Has been previously convicted of similiar offences. Warrant issued. 7.— Reading ( Borough). — For stealing, 27th ult., a Singer Safety bicycle, 30- in. wheels, butted spokes ( 2 missing from back wheel), solid tyres, f- in. 1892 pattern— A man, who gave the name of GEORGE ISLES ( supposed false), age about 18, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion pale, hair dark, slight moustache; dress, dark suit, hard felt hat; was wearing a large albert chain. Information to Head Constable Tewsley, Reading. 8. — Windsor ( Borough) — For embezzle- ment, 29th ulto. — HENRY BARNES, age 35, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion sallow, hair and moustache light brown ; dress, rusty black jacket and vest, light grey cloth trousers, black hard felt hat, or white straw hat with black band. Warrant issued. Information to Head Constable Armour, New Windsor. BUCKINGHAMSHIRE. 9.— Slough ( County). — For stealing a cheque for £ 2, on National Bank of Scotland, London Branch, No. 422656, drawn by Hyde, in favour of E. Cullimore; and £ 9 15s.— A MAN, age about 25, height 5 ft. 8 in., hair very dark, slight dark mous- tache, teeth slightly project ( one in Iront decayed) ; dress, black double- breasted jacket, silk facinga, black vest, striped trousers, white collar, striped tie, blue front and cuffs, light cap, star on top. He sold 6 electro- plated desserc spoons, Queen's pattern ( supposed stolen). He left behind a black bag, containing a number of keys and tools, and woman's underclothing. Information to Supt. Sutton, Slough. BERKSHIRE. 6.— Reading ( Borough).— For stealing a purse and £ 2 10s. — FREDERICK HARRIS, alias FOSKETT, and WATTS, age 21, height 5ft. 7or Sin, complexion fresh, face rather long and blotchy, hair CHESHIRE. 10.— Stockport ( Borough).— For stealing, 9th inst.— 12 ladies' 9- carat gold rings ( 3 buckle rings, each set small rose diamond; 1 heavy curb; 1 heavy knot; 7 light curb and knot rings) ; I lady's 15- carat gold bangle, narrow pattern, embossed— TWO MEN— lst, age about 30, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in, complexion sallow, hair and long moustache light, eyes blue; dress, dark clothes, black tie, white collar. 2nd, age about 23, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in, slim build, complexion fresh, thin features, clean shaved, eyes prominent; d: ecs, dark coat and 2 T H E P O L I C E GAZETTE. The first man entered a jeweller's shop and asked to be shown some rings ; shortly after, the second man entered hurriedly and asked to be shown a ring which he saw in the window. While the attendant was reaching the ring from the window, the first man stole a case containing the above jewellery. Information to Chief Constable Jones, Stoukport. CORNWALL. 11. — Penzance ( Borough). — For obtaining money by false pretences, on 2nd June last— ERNEST FREDERICK PICKARD. alias FRANK CECIL GELL, age about 83, height o ft. 8 in, slender build, complexion fair, hair brown, eyes blue, lost several front teeth in upper jaw, and has some peculiarity about the upper lip. Formerly carried on business at Macclesfield as a grocer. Warrant issued. Not to be apprehended out of the United Kingdom. 12— Penzance ( Borough).— For stealing, 27th ult., 1 gentleman's silver geneva watch, 1 small gold seal, set with cornelian stone, with monogram of 3 letters engiaved thereon, ring at top broken; 1 gold scarf- pin, set with carbuncles, pin broken in centre— A MAN, age 55 to 60, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., stout build, bald, moustache turning grey, bloated appearance, very large red nose; dress, short dark jacket, dark corduroy trousers, dark peak cap, old handkerchief round neck, lace boots. Stated he was a jeweller and diamond cutter. May be found at low public- houses or common lodging houses. Information to Head Constable Nicholas, Pen- zance. DENBIGHSHIRE. 13-— Wrexnam { County).— For stealing a silver watch ( bailee) — FREDERICK FRANCIS, alias FRANCIS DAYIES, age 40 to 45, height 5 ft. 3 in., 3tout build, complexion dark, hair ( bald on top and turning grey) dark, moustache brown, walks very sharp with short quick steps; shabbily dressed, generally carrie) a small handbag. A tramping watch- cleancr. Warrant issued. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Vaughan, Wr< xham. DEVONSHIRE. 14.— Barnstaple ( County). — For obtaining money by false pretences — ROLAND HILL, age about 25, height about 5 ft. 7 in., slight build, comDltxion pale, hair and moustache brown; dress, black coat, grey mixture trousers, sometimes cap or hard hat.— W. HILL, age about 28, height about 5 ft. 6 in., rather stout build, complexion fresh, hair and moustache light brown ; dress, grey suit, bowler hat or cop. Both of 170, Mary- street, Balsall Heath, Birmingham. Their modus operandi is to call on hotel and boarding- house keepers, & c., who have been in the habit of advertising in " Bennett's Business Directory," produce a copy of old advertisment, and obtain money for a renewal of same. Warrant issued. 15.— Barnstaple ( County).— For stealing, 29th ult., from a lodging house, at Ilfracombe— A jewel case, containing 1 gold ring set with 2 diamonds and sapphire j 1 ruby ring ; 1 gold bracelet; 6 silver bmgles; 1 Indian silver bangle; 1 filigree gold brooch in case ; 1 garnet brooch; 1 gold pencil case; 1 crescent- shape gold brooch set with pearls ; 1 gold bar brooch set with pearls ; 1 set of amber necklets and bracelets ; 1 garnet bracelet; 1 claw brooch ; 1 garnet necklace— A MAN, age about 35, height 5 ft. 6 in., side whiskers and moustache, chin shaved, prominent teeth ; dress, black coat and vest, grey trousers, white straw bat. Is supposed to have come by Sunday League train from London, an envelope being found in his room addressed— J. Bather, Esq., 48, Albert- road, Queen's- road, Dalston, London, N. E. He sent a registered parcel by London and South Western Railway, addressed to Rushbrook, 146, Aldersgate- street, London. Information to Supt. Hobb3, Barnstaple. 16.— Exeter ( County).— Fcr deserting his wife and family, leaving them chargeable to the common fund of St. Thomas' Union— WILLIAM GRAIN- GER, age about 46, height about 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., round- shouldered and short neck, complexion dark, hair black ( turning grey), eyes very dark and rest- less, scar on back. A builder's foreman; native of Devonshire. Was seen in London a short time since, and is probably a foreman or manager for some contractor. Warrant issued. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Jesse, Exeter. DORSETSHIRE. 17.— Dorchester ( County).— For stealing, 7th inst., a single- case silver watch, smooth case, No. ( supposed) 51650, shield on bick, has been soldered round rim, inside back of case, steel chain and key attached— FRED VIVIAN, age about 33, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., complexion, hair, and moustache, and imperial dark, abscess on back ; dress, short brown mixture coat, dark vest and trousers, small stripe, red tie, peak cap, new boots. Carries a bundle in red handkerchief. Stated he was invalided from the Navy, where he served as a stoker. Is fond of music, and plays the piano. Information to Supt. Devenish, Dorchester. 18.— Poole ( County).— For stealing, 4th inst., a black leather spring purse containing 19s., and a dog licence in the name of Robert Walker Dinsdale — ALBERT LLOYD, age about 18, height about 5 ft. in., complexion dark, hair dark brown, clean shaved, '' Sayers" and other marks tattooed on chest, ships, & c, on hands and arms; has slight impediment in his speech; dress, black jacket and vest, blue serge trousers, dark cap with leather peak, lace boots. He left the reformatory training ship " Cornwall," at Parfleet, Essex, about 12 months ago. Warrant issued. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Hains, Poole. 19. — Weymouth ( Borough). — Portrait and description of EDWARD C. FLOWERS, late a tailor's manager, whose apprehension is sought for April, 1894, Nos. F | 4 20882 to 20897, and 2 £ 10 ditto, dated 2nd January, 1894, Nos. H | 97 43089 and 43090. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Eacock, Wey- mouth. GLAMORGANSHIRE. 21.— Cardiff ( Borough).— For embezzlement—• ALEXANDER WARNOCK, age 40, height 5 ft. 8 in., slight build, complexion sallow, hair dark, curly brown moustache and small side whiskers ; dress, blue serge jacket and vest, brown trousers, and black hard felt hat. Of good address, and is stated to be well known to furrier's in Leeds, Liverpool, Manchester, Birmingham, Derby, and Sheffield. Formerly kept mantle shops at Bradford, and Burton- on- Trent. May associate with betting men. Warrant issued. Information to the Head Constable, Borough Police, Cardiff. embezzlement— Age 26, height 5 ft. 9 in., slight build, complexion very pale, hair brown, clean shaved, speaks with cockney accent; dress, long rough double- breasted coat suit, black bowler hat, patent button boots. Has been employed by Messrs. Simmonds & Sons, Haymarket, London, and has friends at Shepherd's Bush. Absconded 16th inst. Warrant issued. 20. — Weymouth ( Borough).— Woodcut por- trait and description of THOMAS PERKINS, late Postmaster, Weymouth, whose apprehension Is sought for stealing £ 370— Age 40, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., slight build, complexion sallow, hair ( long and inclined to curl) and very thin whiskers, black, moustache ( curled at ends) dark brown, eyes dark brown, wears glasses, lost use of left hand ( caused by broken arm near elbow), has very bad feet and walks with shuffling gait. When last seen was wearing brown check suit, brown felt hat ( fiat top), but may be wearing silk hat and black frock coat, lace boots which open to toe- caps. Native of Salford, and was employed at Manchester Post Office until 1892, when he was appointed Postmaster at Wey- mouth. Has relatives at Salford and Southport. His face has become wasted by illness since the photograph was taken. Is believed to possess 16 £ 5 Bank of England notes, dated London, 30th HAMPSHIRE. 22.— Aldershot ( County).— For stealing, 30th ult., £ 10 10s.— TOM COOPER, age about 65, height about 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., complexion and hair dark, ears deformed, front teeth broken; dress, black jacket, plaid vest, brown corduroy trousers, and brown bard felt hat. A gipsy ; well known in the counties of Oxford, Berks, Hants, and Surrey. Warrant issued. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Stephen- son, Aldershot. 23.— Portsmouth ( Borough).— For obtaining £ 3 by fraud, 12th ult.— H. ARNOLD, age about 35, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., complexion fresh, full faoe, hair, whiskers and moustache light brown. A commercial traveller, formerly in the employ of Messrs. Harrison, Burton & Co., Sugar Merchants, 10, Philpot- lane, E. C. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Town Hall, Portsmouth. HERTFORDSHIRE. 24.— Bishop Stortford ( CWt/).- GEORGE BOLTON, Case No. 11, 6th October, 1893, not now wanted. Warrant withdrawn. KENT. 25. — Wren's Cross ( County). — For house breaking and stealing, 25th ult., at Linton— 1 pair of dark cloth trousers; 1 black cloth jacket; 1 bunch of keys— GEORGE PRESNAIL, age 40, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion fresh, hair light brown, small side whiskers, eyes grey, tattooed " Susan " right arm, " S. W." on left arm, scar on back of head; dress, light cord trousers, grey military shirt, cap with shiny peak, half jack- boots carried a lady's umbrella. A native of Maidstone a painter, but generally works as a labourer Sentenced 6th January, 1892, to 6 months imprison ment for housebreaking. Information to Supt. Holman, Wren's Cross, Maidstone. LANCASHIRE. 26.— Bolton ( County).— For stealing, 28th ult., at Great Lever, a clarionette with 13 keys, G sharp, FRIDAY, AUGUST 10, 1894. T H E P O L I C E GAZETTE. 3 key brokeD, cocoa wood, bound with nickel silver round the joints, maker—" Henry Potter, Charing Cross, London," and a jacket and vest— SAMUEL LEWIS, age about 40, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in, complexion fresh, high cheek- bones, slightly bald top of head, moustache ( turning grey) dark; dress, bine jacket and vest, dark grey trousers, light • osp with peak, lace boots. Stated he was a native of Crewe, and that his mother and brother resided there. He is supposed to have worked at Little Hulton, London and North Western Railway, as brikesman, some years ago in the name of GEORGE • COLLINS. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Leeming, Bolton. 27.— Bury ( County).— For failing to report— Supervisee EDWARD SINEY, Office No. 40932, age 32, height 5 ft. 1 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes brown, crucifix, anchor and blue marks on left, anchor and blue marks on right forearm, Y. R. and crossed flags back of left hand, rings lst, 2ud and 3rd left fingers, left leg deformed from fracture. Sentenced at Salford, 5th December, 1887, to 5 years penal servitude and 7 years police super- vision for larceny. F N 901. — License Holder PATRICK TRODDEN, Office No. 46059, age 36, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes grey, scar each eyebrow, two on right cheek, and one left temple, cross inside right forearm. Sen- tenced at Manchester, 10th December, 1891, to • 3 years penal servitude and 3 years police supervision for larceny ( person). R 444. Information to Supt. Noblett, Bury. 28.— Ch O r I ey ( County).— For breaking and enter- ing a joiner's shop, 4th inst., and stealing a quantity - of tools ( recovered)— A MAN, age 40 to 45, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., hair ( bald on top), whiskers, beard and moustache and eyes dark; dress, dark • cloth clothes, cardigan jacket, black billycock hat, eollarand black- and- white tie. Stated he was a joiner. Information to Supt. Norris, Chorley. 29.— Liverpool ( City).— For failing to report — License Holder WILLIAM LITTLE, alias • CLAYTON, Office No. 40667, age 43, height 5 ft. 4| in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes blue, jpockpitted, scar left temple, blue spot between right thumb and forefinger, ruptured right side. Sentenced at Liverpool, 9th March, 1889, to 7 years penal ser- vitude for forgery. Licensed 6th ult. P 141. — License Holder JOHN SHAUGHNESSY, Office No. 46336, age 31, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion pale, hair dark brown, eyes blue, coat- of- arms on • chest, star top of right shoulder with " God defend the right" in centre, star on left shoulder with Heaven's light our guide " in centre, design with ' H. C in centre, ballet girl and ship on left arm, • female and hoop outside, and female and sailor in- side right arm. Sentenced at Liverpool, 26th July, 1890 to 5 years penal servitude for burglary. Li- censed 3rd May last. Q 275. If these men are found it is requested that they • may ho dealt with under the Prevention of Crimes Act, 1871, as amended by the Penal Servitude Act, 1691. Information to the Assistant Head Constable, Detective Department, Liverpool. 30— Oldham ( Borovgli).— For stealing, 6th inst., £ 31 — BENJAMIN RUSSELL, age 48, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., complexion fresh, very high forehead, blind light eye, hair, moustache, and long fnll beard, > andy ( turning grey), nearly bald on top of head; dress, black worsted cloth shooting coat suit, billy- cock hat, lace boots, turned down collar, black tie; carried an umbrella with white knob handle. A - clerk. Has kept the Bath Hotel, Spencer- street, Liverpool, 9 years ago, and has since worked in Manchester, Ashton- under- Lyne, and other towns. " Will probably endeavour to go to America, where he has friends. Warrant issued. Not to be arrested out of the United Kingdom, Information to Chief Constable Peaeock, Oldham. LINCOLNSHIRE. 31.— Barton- on- Humber ( County). — For stealing a half- a- sovereign — ANNIE STOWE, age 11£, stout build, complexion fair, full face, hair flaxen; dress, brown plaid dress, black cape, large white straw hat trimmed wreath of yellow flowers and green velvet, black patent leather shoes. Carried a silk umbrella. She was last seen in Hull on 6th inst., where she has friends residing in the Hedon and Hessle- roads. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Ward, Barton- on- Humber. 32.— Horncastle ( County).— For obtaining by false pretences, a half- bred dark brown mare, age 5 years, 15 hands, 3 white spots on near side of chine, large ears, short tail and mane, scar on hind heel— A man who gave the name of STOREY, age about 30, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., complexion and hair dark, clean shaved, supposed slight moustache; dress, dark sr. it, black hard felt hat, brown over- coat. Was in company of a man, age about 37, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., full red face, slight mous- tache ; dress, light coat, light trousers with red stripe, light hat. Both are known to be swindlers, and frequent Nottingham, Leicester, and Bir- mingham. Warrant issued. Information to Snpt. Costar, Horncastle.
