"> All announcements for insertion in the POLICE GAZBTTK, and all communications upon them should be addressed to XHK JLDITOB OF THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YAED, LONDON, f. ' ff. Particv/ ij rs concerning personswhose apprehension is sought icill be inserted in one issue of the POLICE F/'/ ZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. Part - Uars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the art ills in question to be thereby identified. In vll anses where a reward is offered the name and address of some person responsible for the pijrrent must be given, and the exact conditions be clearly stated. Po/ traits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stulhr. property, will be prominently inserted, with detailed particulars, at a cost of 15s. per portrait, and of 7s. Gd. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, including the expense of engraving on wood. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; ana, if the name of such person be required to be inserted, and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 2. 5. 6. 7. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and are alphabetically arranged by counties. » 9- The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases, the officer signing the request for insertion of any announcement, will be wholly responsible for any proceedings whic/ i mag result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They man be clearly written on one side of the paper only, be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, by cheq- je, crossed " Drummond tlf Co.," Post Office Order payable at Parliament- it., Postal Order, or in Stamps. 13. Advertisements are accepted for the POLICE GAZETTE through Mr. James Willing, 125, Strand, London, the sole Agent, who will furnish the rates on application. 14. The following is a copy of the order which governs the circulation, by the Metropolitan Police, of advertisements, or reward bills, for the discovery of property or the detec- tion of crime. The Editor inserts it, in hope of preventing delays which sometimes occur in publishing such notices, on account of their not being in accordance with the regu- lations in force in the Metropolis :— 1. Printed hand- bills, or other advertisements, offering a reward for the discovery of property or the detection of erime, whether printed and issued by the Metropolitan Police, or distributed and exhibited, with the sanction of the Commissioners, on the application of private persons, or of the Police of any County or Borough, must be c'early expressed in relation to the following points— ( a) The amount of the reward, ( ft) The conditions on which it is payable, ( o) The person by whom it will be paid. ( 4) That the name and address of the printer appear thereon. 8. No expression most be used in such an advertise ment, in relation to property stolen, or criminally taken or disposed of, holding out any expectation that the reward will be paid on itB return without the offender beLu~ brought to trial, or without enquiry. Department. — Woodcut portrait and description of GEORGE WALTER COOPER, a deserter from the 3rd Hussars at Dublin, whose " pprehensiou is sought for obtaining at Dublin, on 28th ult., the sum of £ 40 by fraud and forgery from the Post Office Savings Bank— Age 23, height 5 ft. 8f in., complexion dark, hair brown, eyes bluish grey, tattooed left forearm, small scar above left eyebrow, scar left hip and on left buttock, slight moustache, ears large and prominent. Warrant issued. Information to tho Commissioner of Metropolitan Police, Dublin. 2.— E Division.— For obtaining £ 25 on a false declaration sworn before a Commissioner of Oaths — ERNEST CHARLES TRENTAMOVE WILKIN, age 25, height 5 ft. 3 in., complexion pale, hair ( parted in centre), dark brown, thin brown mous- tache, eyes hazel, thin hooked nose, decayed teeth, lisps; appearance of a racing man ; dress, sac over- coat, pearl buttons, mourning band on left arm, dark suit, wide brim black bard felt hat. Native of London. Supposed in Buxton or Leeds. Warrant issued. S.— S Division.— Failing to surrender to liis bail on a ch » rge of committing acts of gross indecency-- CHRISTOPHER ROBSON, alias TIDY, age 28, height 5 ft. 11 in., complexion pale, hair dark brown; dress, dark coat and trousers, light vest, patent leather boots, black hard felt hat; gentlemanly appearance ; good address. Warrant issued. Information to bo forwarded to the Metropolitan Police Office, New Scotland Yard, S. W. CITY OF LONDON. 4.— On suspicion, for the murder of her fema'e child, found in river Thames, 7th ult. — KATE BROWN, age about 25, height 5 ft. 7 in., com- plexion pale, hair brown, eyes light blue; dress, dark skirt, red Paisley mantle, large black felt hat, trimmed red velvet puffs, button boots; shabby appearance. Sapposed native of Suffolk. 5.— For obtaining credit fcr £ 7,412, by fraud, 4th January last— JOHN R. TAYLOR, late of 127, Queen's- gate, S. W., age about 60, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., very red face, hair, whiskers, and moustache white ; well dressed, and wears high silk hat. Has been travelling superintendent for Messrs. Smith & Sons, News Agents, and now represents the following periodicals, viz.: " Black and White," " The Gentlewoman," and " Financial News." Wa9 seen at Birmingham, 12th inst., when hii whiskers had bean shaved off. Is known at railway book- stalls. Warrant issued. 6.— For embezzlement— GEORGE GRANT, late of 6, Stonebridge Villa, Townsend- ioad, South Tottenham, age 21, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., com- plexion sallow, hair and slight moustiehe ( curly) black, eyes dark, thick turned- up nose, spots on face ; dress, supposed dark clothes. A clerk. Ab- sconded 21th ult. 7. — For fraud — ANTONIO ALEXANDRO MANERO, late of Palmerston- buildings, E 0., and " Elmswood," Rydens- road, Walton - on - Thames, age 44, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., slight build, com- plexion pale, hair ( turning grey), and moustache ( curled at ends) very dark ; well dressed, wears silk hat. A Spaniard, but speaks English well. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. McWilliam, 26, Old Jewry, E. C. AYRSHIRE. 8.— Ayr ( County).— For obtaining money and a shawl by false pretences— MARGARET ROUN- TOUL, alias WARD, MARGARET ARTHUR, BROWN, FAIRHURST, MARY McKKNZIE, WRIGHT, MARGARET McDOUGAI. L, CAL- DER, and RUTH McDONALD, age 40, height 4 ft 9 in., stout build, complexion sallow, hair and eyes black, rather large mouth, thick lips, and prominent front teeth: speaks with Irish accent; dress, black lustre skirt, black astrachan jacket trimmed light brown fur, black bonnet wiih black lace and flowers, light lace boots, all well worn; carrying a boy about 9 months old, dressed in dark velvet cape and dress. She professes to be in search of her husband and obtains money to pay railway fares. Previously convicted of fraud, and sentenced to 2 THE POLICE GAZETTE. TUESDAY, MARCH 2 7 , 1894. long terms of imprisonment. Wanted at Edinburgh, Hamilton, and Dunfermline for similar offences. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable of Ayrshire, Ajr. BERKSHIRE. 9. — Windsor ( Borough). — For obtaining £ 1 10a. by means of a worthless cheque on the Bank of England, on or about 16th ult.— J. PALMER, age about 42, height about 5 ft. 1U in., complexion fresh, hair, small side whiskers, and heavy mous- tache dark brown; dress, when last seen, drab waterproof, dark brown tweed suit, brown hard felt hat. Stated he was a horse dealer, and lived at 1 Sutherland- square, Walworth. Has in his posses- sion a Bank of England cheque- book containing over 100 cheques, and may endeavour to pass them at hotels, livery stables, etc. Information to Head Constable Armour, Windsor. BRECONSHIRE. 10. — Brecon ( County). — For obtaining, 6th inst., by a worthless cheque on the Birmingham and Dudley District Counties Banking Company, a chestnut cob horse, rising 4 years, 14 hands 2 inches, white face, cff fore leg a little white, white hoof, white on near hind leg between hock and fetlock, thick- set, showy and in good condition— A man, who gave the name of WILLIAM DAVIES, 16, Adderley- road, Birmingham, age about 32, height 5 ft. 7 in., slight build, complexion swarthy, hair ( cut short) dark, clean shaved; dress, plaid water- proof coat, dark grey trousers, brown cloth cap. A low horse coper, and frequently attends fairs in Wales. The horse was booked from Cardiff to Bristol on 7th inst., and thence to Paddington, 9th inst. Warrant issued. GLAMORGANSHIRE. 11— Pontypridd ( County).— For forgery, 7th inst.— JACOB MILLER, alias LEWIS HEWITZ, age 24 or 25, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in , complexion very dark, hair and moustache dark, high cheekbones, Jewish appearance, cannot speak much English, peculiar shuffling gait, stiff in shoulders; dress, dark clothes; carries basket or pack, and sells drapery. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Jones, Pontypiidd. HAMPSHIRE. 12— Aldershot ( County). — Woodcut portrait and description of FRANCIS EVELYN, alias EDDIE TORODE, whose apprehension is sought for stealing a Post Office Savings Bank deposit book, No. 10330, marked Limerick— Age 26, height 5 ft, in., complexion fresh, rather high forehead, hair brown, eyes hazel, large scar left hip, dots tattooed both hands; dress when last seeD, dark coat and vest, light blue stripe trousers, dark hard felt hat, low t- hoes. Is a deserter from the Lincoln Regiment. Warrant issued. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Stephenson, Aid erthot 13.— Winchester ( City).— For failing to appear to a summons for being disorderly and refusing to quit licensed premises — FRANK TAYLOR, a private of the Rifle Brigade, ago 22, height 5 ft. 10 in., complexion sallow, hair dark brown, eyes brown, scar centre of forehead, girl's head tattooed right forearm; dressed in plain clothes deserted 14th inst. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Felton, Winchester. HERTFORDSHIRE. 14.— Hertford ( County).— For obtaining, 27th ult., a quantity of cast- iron, by false pretences— JOSEPH FROST, a general dealer, age 30 to 35, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion fair, hair brown. Warrant issued. Information to Supt Parish, Hertford. 15.— Ware ( County). — For stealing a large brown army rug— GEORGE HEWITT, age about 30, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., slight build, complexion, heavy moustache, and slight beard dark, eyes hazel, has a habit of winking the right eye when speaking; dress, brownish coat, light trousers, black bowler hat, lace boots, cut across toes. Frequents casual wards and common lodging- houses. Information to Capt. Wymer, Supt., " Ware. ISLE OF ELY. 16.— March ( County).— For deserting his wife and children, leaving them chargeable to the North Witchford Union — WILLIAM HOWARD, alias SOLDIER BILL, age 47, height 5 ft. 8£ in., slight build, complexion and hair dark, brown moustache, eyes dark, thin features ; dress, faded black coat, old cord trousers, black cloth cap or soft hat, heavy lace boots. A native of Chelmsford. May be found working with threshing machines. Warrant issued. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Burrows, March. KENT. 17.— Dartford ( County).— For stealing a pony ( recovered) — HARRY HUNT, alias DRURY, age 23, height 5 ft. 8 in., slight build, complexion light, hair brown, small light moustache; dress, brown coat and vest, light cord trousers, brown felt hat. A labourer. He is accompanied by a woman, age about 22, height 5 ft. 4 in,, led face, hair light brown; dress, dark dress, black broad- brimmed hat, button boots ; and 2 children, one about 15 months, the other 4 months old. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Webster, Dartford. 18.— Margate ( Borough). — For stealing, 3rd inst. — 2 postal orders for 20s. each, Nos. O | 72 613509, and 613510— DANIEL MAY, age 41, height 5 ft. 10 or 11 in., complexion fresh, full face, hair ( turning grey) and moustache dark, pleasant- looking ; of good address, and fond of discussing politics; generally wears grey overcoat, and black felt hat. A clerk. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Farndale, Margate. LANCASHIRE. 19.— Liverpool ( City).— For failing to report — License Holder JAMES BRYAN, alias LEWIS, McGREGOR, and KELLY, Office No. 46035, age 30, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion fresb, hair and eyes brown, large mole centre of chest, scar right eye- brow, ulcer scars left shin, varicose veins both legs. Sentenced at Beverley, 3rd July, 1888, to 5 years penal servitude and 3 years police supervision for larceny ( person). Liberated on 3rd inst., on second license, which expires 10th June next. O 237. Information to the Assistant Head Constable, Detective Department, Liverpool. " 20— Accrington ( Borough).— For obtaining monev by false pretences, 5th and 6th inst.— JOE SIMMONS, a Dutchman, age 30, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., complexion sallow, hair, slight side whiskers, and moustache black, large nose ; the appearance of a Jew ; dress, dark blue jacket, buttoned close to neck, collar stitched down, black worsted trousers, black billycock hat, low shoes. Stated he had served his apprenticeship as lithographer, in London, at Sir Joseph Causton & Sons, and, until recently, had worked at Foulds, D. ansgate, Manchester. His modus operandi is to take private lodgings, and then make the acquaintance of a shopkeeper whom he tells he is employed as artist at a litho- grapher's in an adjoining village, and thus obtains money which he pretends is to purchase materials for special work at the place named. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Beattie, Accring- ton. 21. — Ashton- Under- Lyne ( Borough). — For perjnry — JOSEPH HADF1ELD, age 23, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion fresh, high cheek- bones, hair and slight moustache brown, eyes blue, ring 4th finger of both hands, scar palm of right hand;. dress, blue coat, cord trousers, brown felt hat, lace boots. A greengrocer or hawker ; native of Ashton- under- Lyne. Warrant issued. Not to be apprehended out of the United Kingdom. Information to Chief Constable Snell, Ashton- under- Lyne. 22.— Salford ( Borough).— For stealing a horse, lurry, and harness— License Holder JOHN HAW- THORNE, alias HAWTHORNTWAITE, Office No. 45243, age 30, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes blue, scars on chin, outer angle of right eye, on each wrist, right elbow, left side of forehead, under left eye, and on left forearm, " I. H." inside right forearm, I. S." and cross back and cross and heart frout of left forearm, 5 blue dots between left thumb and forefinger, wart end of 2nd left finger. Sentenced at Manchester, 22nd November, 1889, to 5 years penal servitude for larceny. Licensed 13th Sept., 1893. P 550. 23.— Salford ( Borough).— For failing to report — Supervisee THOMAS HUGHES, alias HORNER, JOHN DYSON, WILLIAM REECE, HENRY THOMPSON, and BROUGHAM, Office No. 45293, age 33, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion fresb, hair dark brown, eyes brown, lost six top teeth, two boil marks back of left shoulder, and one on left ribs, scar on left forefinger and left foot. Sentenced at Salford, 9th July, 1888, to 5 years penal servitude and 5 years police supervision for larceny ( person). Licensed 30th Sept., 1893. F O 525. LINCOLNSHIRE. 24.— Boston ( Borough). — For neglecting his family — SAMUEL SIMPSON, age 34, height 5 ft 6 or 7 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, sandy moustache, eyes blue, scar left cheek, close to ear, 3rd and 4th fingers right hand have been crushed. A native of Preston, Lancashire. Plays a concertina outside publichouses, which he carries in a mahogany box. Left Boston about 6 months ago. Warrant issued. Information to Head Constable Bellamy, Boston. NORTHAMPTONSHIRE. 25.— Wellingboro' ( County).— For stealing 1 lady's gold buckle dress ring, 2 dark stones and diamond in centre ; 1 enamelled brooch, made of a 5- shilling piece, small ring fastened at back; 1 jubilee half- crown brooch, set in silver ring, gold colour; 1 small black tin cash- box, containing 2 or 3 fourpenny pieces and a number of foreign coins, amongst which are 5 frauc- pieces— A MAN, age 20 to 30, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 ft., complexion pale, hair brown, light brown moustache ; wearing short drab dust coat and black hard felt hat. Information to Supt. Alexander, Wellingboro'. 26.— Northampton ( Borough).— For failing to report— License Holder FRANCIS BIGGS, alias FRANCIS BRIGGS, FREDERICK BATES, GEO. ANDERSON, and FRANK BIGGS, Office No. 45748, age 52, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion sallow, hair brown ( turning grey, bald), eyes grey, mole left side neck, cupping marks light side back, D on left side, man, woman, flag and mermaid outside and coat of arms inside left forearm, ecar ( gunshot) inside right elbow. Sentenced at Huntingdon, 20th October, 1891, to 3 years penal servitude and 7 year* police supervision for housebreaking. Licensed 18th January last. Left this borough in company with a man named Lowe, alias Wall, a notorious thief. Likely to be found in the company of ex- convicts. Wnrrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable of Northamp- ton. NORTHUMBERLAND. 27— Newcastle- on- Tyne ( City). — Portrait and description of KATE PRICE, who escaped FRHDAY. MARCH 23 1RP4 T H E POLICE GAZETTE. from police at Birmingham Railway Station, 22DCJ ult., charged with stealing jewellery to the value of £ 200- age 21, height 5 ft. 4£ in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, fringe in front, eyes grey, mole right forearm ; dress, dark brown dress, long dark brown cloth jacket, with short cape attached, trimmed light brown fur, small blue hat, trimmed blue or green feather. Supposed to ba a Jewess. Native of Penrith, but has resided mostly in London. Her husband is under remand on the same charge. Information to Capt. Nicholls, Chief Constable, Newcastle- on- Tyne. SHROPSHIRE. 28.— Pontesbury ( County).— For assauU on police, in November, 1890— RICHA. RD WOOD- BINE, alias EARRING DICK, and DICK BROWN, age 4o, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., stout build, complexion fresh, full round face, hair dark ( turning grey), slight moustache, bow- legged, pierced ears ( at times wearing rings in them) ; dress, pilot jacket and vest, brown cord trousers, lace boots. Works in quarries, public . works, rail- ways, & c. as a labourer ; may be found in company of poachers. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Straffen, Pontesbury. SOMERSETSHIRE. 29.— Dunster ( County).— For embezzlement— SAMUEL KE1GHTLEY, age about 21, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., complexion fair, hair dark brown, clean shaved, eyes supposed grey ; dress, supposed round brown coat and vest, light small plaid trousers, light brown bowler hat, lace boot- i. A journeyman baker; native of Wellington, Somerset. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. White, Dunster. STAFFORDSHIRE. 30.— Burslein ( County).— For failing to report — License Holder JAMES WILKINSON, alias THOMAS HALL, and CHARLER WILSON, Office No. 45944, age 57, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes hazel, two scars right side of head, one left of neck, three ( boils) back of neck, one on each hip, right knee, right elbow, thigh ( boil), centre of back, left shoulder- blade and left forearm. Sentenced at Stafford, 7th December, 1882, to 10 years penal servitude and remanet of former sentence for burglary. Sentence expires - 2nd July, 1894. Liberated 19th February last to Stoke- on- Trent. Z I 95. 31.— Burslem ( County).— For larceny, 16th inst.— ABRAHAM HARTLEY", age about 30, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., stout build, complexion fresh, hair dark brown, heavy brown moustache, eyes brown; dress, black cloth coat and vest, black trousers, black hard hat, turn- down collar, lace boots.— WALTER HARTLEY or WELLS, age about 26, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., complexion fresh, hair light brown, s ight light moustache and side whiskers, eyes blue; dress, black cloth coat and vest, light cloth trousers, black hard hat, turn- down • collar, spring- side boots. Warrant issued. 3f.— Burslem ( County). — For burglary, 19th instf, at Bagnatl— THOMAS SMITH, age 50, height about 5 ft. in., complexion dark, rough face, hair and moustache ( turning grey) dark, whiskers about a month's growth; dress, long dark cloth coat, dark cloth trousers, old brown hat, muffler, lace boots. A farm labourer or cattle drover; native of Congle- ton. Has been convicted of felony at Congleton and Leek. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Supt. Hill, Burslem. SUSSEX ( EAST). £ 1 REWARD. 33.— Brighton ( Borough). — For stealing, 9th iost., a bay mare, 15 hands, hind fetlocks white, leather boot on off fore- leg, rat tail, good condition ; brass- mounted black leather harness, " W. T." in monogram on pad, beaded blue front on bridle ; a Rallie car, " C " spring, painted green, picked out red, recently varnished, green cloth cushions, '" Bligh, Canterbury," ou wheel- caps ; 2 plated lamps ; 2 small sheep- skin mats; 1 black waterproof apron; and whip— A man, who gave the name of HOLMES, age 45, height 5 ft. 9 in., hair, whiskers, and moustache dark, fu. ll face; wearing dark frock coat, high silk hat. Warrant issued.
