Pari icv/ j rs concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the PoLICK ' t ZETTB, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 3. Part "' Lars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the art i ; le in question to be thereby identified. 4. In oil vises where a reward is offered the name and address of some person responsible for the p>! / irsnt must be given, and the exact conditions be clearly stated. 5. Po/ ifr aits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stuhr. property, will be prominently inserted, with detailed particulars, at a cost of 15.!. per portrait, and of 7s. 6d. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, including the expense of engraving on wood. 6. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; ana, if the name of such person be required to be inserted, and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. J. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property hear a nnwOcr , ./.. a a. « alphabetically arranged by counties. , 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to t/ ie EdUor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases, the officer signing the request for insertion of any announcement, will be wholly responsible for any proceedings whic/ i mag result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forioaraed so as to be received not later than noonon Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edit ion not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only, be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, by cheque, crossed " Drummond Sf Co.," Post Office Order payable at Parliamenl- st., Postal Order, or in Stamps. 13. Advertisements are accepted for the POLICE GAZETTE through Mr. James Willing, 125, Strand, London, the sole Agent, who will furnish the rates on application. 14. Cities and Boroughs therein, arranged in strict alphabetical order. 2.— Any additional copies of the GAZETTE beyond the number at present supplied will be forwarded on application in the form set forth in circular of the 7th of November, 1883. 3.— It is particularly requested that any oom- plaints as to the non- delivery or of irregularity in the date of delivery of the POLIOI GAZETTE, may be at once notified to the Editor. ( C) < d) The following is a copy of the order which governs the circulation, by the Metropolitan Police, of advertisements, or reward bills, for the discovery of property or the detec- tion of crime. The Editor inserts it, in hope of preventing delays which sometimes occur in publishing such notices, on account of their not being in accordance with the regu- lations in force in the Metropolis :— 1, Printed hand- bills, or other advertisements, offering a reward for the discovery of property or the detection of crime, whether printed and issued by the Metropolitan Police, or distributed and exhibited, with the sanction of the Commissioners, on the application of private persons, or of the Police of any County or Borough, must be clearly oxpressed in relation to the following points— ( A) The amount of the reward. ( 6) The conditions on which it is payable, ( o) The person by whom it will be paid, ( rf) That the name and address of the printer appear thereon. 2. No expression must be used in such an advertise- ment, In relation to property stolen, or criminally taken ox disposed of, holding out any expectation that the reward will be paid on its return without the offender being brought to trial, or without enquiry, NOTI.— There are 177 Stations of the Metropolitan fttlkt Force at which Notioet can be posted. APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT. METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT. 1. — C. I. Department. — For stealing, 31st ult.— An opal brooch, set in gold ; a gold ring, set garnet and pearl, and various articles of ladies' clothing— ALEXANDER ARTHUR DOUGLAS, age 39, height 5 ft. 3£ in, complexion sallow, hair and slight side whiskers dark, moustache light brown, wen on forehead; dress, black suit, blue- grey overcoat with velvet collar, high hat, carried a fawn- color check mackintosh, and black- handle silk umbrella ; was wearing 2 gold rings, 1 set moonstone, the other corals, 2 stones missing. He has in his possession a cheque- book on the London and South Western Bank, where he has overdrawn his account. He may be wanted for other offences. Warrant issued. 2. — c Division. — For embezzlement.— ROBERT ALEXANDER JOHNSON, a cashier, late of 15, Chancellor's- road, Hammersmith, age 28, height 5 ft. 10 in, complexion sallow, thin face, hair light and slight moustache ; dress, dark blue cutaway coat and vest, dark mixture trousers, black hard felt hat, sidespring boots. Warrant issued. 3.— D Division.— For conspiracy and fraud— GEORGE DICK INS, age 26, height 5 ft. 7 in, complexion fresh, hair light; dress, light drab covert coat, light stripe trousers, black hard felt hat. A native of London. Warrant issued. 4.— K Division.— For embezzlement— JAMES CRANE, age 33, height 5 ft. 10 or 11 in, stout build, complexion fresh, hair dark ; dress, supposed dark clothes, black hard felt hat. Supposed a native of Epping. Has served 12 years in Royal Horse Artillery. Last heard of at Dover, on 29th December last. Warrant issued. 5.— K Division.— For obtaining £ 16 by means of a worthless cheque on the Shropshire Banking Company— WILLIAM ANDREWS, age 32, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in, complexion pale, long face, high cheek- bones, hair light brown ( turning grey) ; dress, brown overcoat, dark clothes under, hard felt hat. A ship's fireman; supposed native of Grimsby. Warrant issued. 6.— V Division. — For deserting his family— JAMES OLIVER, age 48, height 5 ft. 6 in, com- plexion fair, hair whiskers and . moustache ginger, eyes small and weak, of drunken habits ; dress, old monkey jacket, white moleskin vest, cord trousers, cloth cap. A field hand; native of Kingston- on- Thames. Warrant issued. 7.— V Division.— For deserting his family— JOHN BUSHNELL, age 40, height 5 ft. 9 in, complexion pale, hair ( slightly bald) brown, eyes blue, crown and fern leaves tattooed left forearm, large scar back of right hand, flat- footed. Supposed working at Southampton New Docks; native of Hampton, Middlesex. Warrant issued. 8— V Division. — For deserting his family— JOHN LIGHT, alias " NOB," age 25, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in, complexion fair, hair light brown, eyes blue, thin build. A coachman; Dative of Hampton Wick. Warrant issued. Information to be forwarded to the Metropolitan Police Office, New Scotland Yard, S. W CITY OF LONDON. 9.— For embezzlement and stealing a cheque for £ 298 0s. 6d.— JAMES CHARLES DAVIS, late of 19, Aberdeen- road, Highbury Grange, N, age 70, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in, slight build, complexion ruddy, hair and whiskers grey, stoops, and suffers from asthma. Late rate collector for the parish of St. Katberine Cree. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. McWiHiam, 26, Old Jewry, E. C. BRECONSHIRE. 10.— Brecon ( County).— For obtaining money by fraud— HENRY THOMAS, age 30, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in, complexion fresh, hair light brown, cleat- shaved, eyes blue, bald on front, and indentation on top of head, as if from an injury ; dress, sleeve waistcoat, leather leggings, fastening with strap?, two- peak cap. Supposed a farm labourer, and native of Tredegar, Monmouth. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Joseph, Brecon. DURHAM. 11.— J arrow ( County).— For obtaining, 20th November last, at Whitburn, a silver patent lever watch, No. 7501, silver dial, gold chapters, blue steel pointers, minute Iigure3 worn off; and an old- fashioned verge watch, maker " Champion," Liver- pool— WILLIAM WILSON, age 40, height 5 ft. 7- J- in, slight build, complexion sallow, pock marked, hair dark brown, slight dark moustache, eyes dark, scar back of neck, W. W. tattooed forearm ; dress, grey suit ( much worn), hard felt hat, lace boots. A watch and clock cleaner; native of Kelso. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Fleming, Jarrow. 2 THE POLICE GAZETTE. FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 16, 1894. ESSEX. 12— Chelmsford ( County). — For obtaining from a clothier, by false pretences, on 3rd inst., 1 serge reefer and vest, No. on ticket 1233, 1 vicuna ditto, No. 1224, 1 vicnna jacket and vjst, cord eiJge, No. 1085, all black— A MAN, age 20 to 25, height about 5 ft. 5 in., complexion pale, hair dark, little or no hair on face; dress, black coat and vest, light trousers, red- and- black stripe jersey, blue skull cap, red socks, lace shoes. He took lodgings, giving the name of Dalton, stating that his father was about to open a draper's shop at Chelmsford, and obtained the goods on approval and is supposed tc have left with them about 4 P. M., 3rd inst. He is supposed to be one of the men wanted at Ipswich and Reigate, see Case No. 30, 12th ult., and 41 and 42,19th ult. Warrant issued. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Somerset, Chelmsford. GLAMORGANSHIRE. 13— Swansea ( Borough.)— For failing to re- port— License Holder GEORGE STEVENSON, alias STEVENS, and STEPHENSON, Office No. 44803, age 25, height 5 ft. 5^ in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes hazel, scar left side head and right temple, right side forehead and right forearm, chest deformed, blue spots and triangle on left hand, blue spot and bracelet on left forearm. Sentenced at the Central Criminal Court, 29th July, 1889, to 5 years penal servitude for burglary. Licensed 26th May, 1893. P 407. Information to the Chief Constable of Swansea. GLOUCESTERSHIRE. 14.— Stroud ( County).— For embezzlement.— CHARLES ALFRED GADD, a clerk, age 28, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., complexion pale, hair, beard, and moustache ( cut short), and eyes dark, lost one upper front tooth, defect in pupil of one eye, is suffering from a bad throat, having recently had it cut in the inside; dress, when last seen, brown plaid suit, brown peak cap, brown plaid overcoat with velvet collar, may be wearing a thia black mackintosh. Native of The Thrupp, near Stroud. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Harrison, Stroud. HAMPSHIRE. 15.— Bitterne ( County).— For housebreaking and stealing 1 four- shilling piece, 1 half- crown, 1 florin, 2 shillings, and 3 sixpences ( jubilee coins), and 1 old half- crown— A MAN, age about 25, height about 5 ft. 8 in., slight build, complexion sallow, hair and moustache dark; dress, black morning coat, low cut vest, white collar and front, small black tie; left behind a black hard felt hat ( nearly new), size 16.— Bitterne ( County).— For stealing a gold ring ( plain) and a gold horseshoe pin— HARRY BRYANT RICHARDS, age 17, height 5 ft. 2 or 3 in, slight build, complexion pale, hair brown, eyes grey, thin features, low forehead; dress, light brown tweed suit, supposed black hard felt hat, narrow brim, lace boots. Native of Shirley, near North- ampton. Warrant issued. Information to Snpt. Matthews, Bitterne. 17.— Winchester ( City).— For deserting his children — WILLIAM TAYLOR, age about 38, height about 5 ft. 7 in., complexion fair, thin features, hair and moustache brown An. outfitter's assistant. Absconded in April, 1893. Warrant issued. 18.- Winchester ( City). — For stealing, 27th ult., 2 black twill umbrellas— A MAN, age about 30, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., thin build, complexion fair, hair and moustache brown, eyes ( full) dark, slight injury to bridge of nose, weak chest; dress, black diagonal coat and vest, grey and black striped tweed trousera, white turn- down collar, light tie, black hard felt hat. Has with him a black twill umbrella, bamboo handle. Information to Supt. Felton, Winchester. HERTFORDSHIRE. 19— Ware ( Cov/ nty).— For obtaining a cheque by false pretences — JOHN HEARSON, alias GEORGE HEiRSON, and WARICK, age about 27, height about 5 feet 7 in., slight build, com- plexion pale, hair and small moustache dark; dress, dark blue serge suit, dark blue melton overcoat with velvet collar, black hard felt hat, wore a gold fetter- link double watch chain with compass pendant attached. Had the appearance of a sailor, and spoke of steam- ships, stating he owned three. Has com- mitted similar offences at Dartford and Woolwich. Warrant issued. 20.— Ware ( County).— For stealing a quantity of lead and zinc piping, guttering, and other fixtures— THOMAS BOXALL, alias LEE, age 23, height 5 ft. 3 in., complexion, slight moustache, and eyes dark ; dress, grey cloth coit, flap pockets,' cord vest and trousers, black felt hat with broad brim, heavy laca boots, or dark mixture morning coat and vest, brown cord trousers, black hard felt hat, white spotted neckerchief. Native of Edmonton. Sen- tenced at Middlesex Sessions, 22nd October, 1892, to 12 months imprisonment for larceny. Information to Capt. Wymer, Supt., Ware. LANARKSHIRE. 21. — Glasgow ( City). — For embezzling £ 61 15s. 6d. — JAMES GRAHAM, age 27, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., stout and well built, hair, moustache and side whiskers light; dress, dark tweed jacket suit, round black felt hat. Late cashier in the employ of the Merryton Coal Com pany. Warrant issued. 22.— Glasgow ( City).— For obtaining gold watches by fraud — WILLIAM SIM, a clerk, age 17 ( looks older), height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion fresh, hair light reddish, eyes dark blue, well built and good looking; dress, blue serge jacket suit, check tweed ulster, black felt hat. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Boyd, Glasgow. LANCASHIRE. 23.— Old Trafford ( County).— For attempting to obtain money by false pretences— A MAN, age about 35, height about 5 ft. 7 in., complexion and hair dark, heavy black moustache, full face ; dress, light dust overcoat, dark suit, havd felt hat; of smart appearance. His modus operandi is to call at houses and solicit subscriptions on behalf of the Salford Soup Kitchen, stating he is authorised by Mr. Peterick, Rector of Saint Bartholomew's Church. 24.— Old Trafford ( County).— For stealing, by means of trick, 1 lady's black frock skirt, striped material, with black silk ruche 3 in. deep, lined black alpaca; 1 lady's red jersey, braided black; 1 pair lady's black French button boots; 1 pair lady's low lace walking shoes ; 1 pair lady's walking shoes, three straps across front— all size 5; 1 pair lady's brown leather shoes, beads on front; 1 pair lady's laced kid walking boots— A woman who gave the name of CARLTON, age about 40, medium height, complexion and hair dark; dress, tight- fitting black mantle. She obtained possession of the articles by stating she was a second- hand clothes dealer, and would pay for them on the following morning, at the same time giving a false address at Manchester. Information to Supt. Bent, Old Trafford. 25.— Wigan ( County).— For the defilement of a girl, age 6, at Piatt Bridge, on 3rd inst.— A MAN, age abont 30, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., stout build, complexion, hair ( curly) and moustache dark; dress, snuff - color jacket and vest, dark trousers, hard billycock hat. Information to Supt. Brassington, Wigan. 26.— Blackburn ( Borough).— Fcr failing to report— Supervisee MARY HALE, alias HALL an'< l WOODS, Office No. 37172, age 43, height 4 ft. in., complexion fresh, hair turning grey, eyes grey, T. D. 19, W. T. 25, M. H. T. W. on right arm, A. S. 3, W. H. T. P. 69 M. H. on left arm, scar left of forehead and over right eye, lost one top tooth. Sentenced at Preston, 24th February, 1879, to 10 years' penal servitude, and 7 years' police supervision for felony. Information to the Chief Constable of Blackburn. NORTHAMPTONSHIRE. 27.— Northampton ( Borough).— For obtain- ing food and lodgings by false pretences, between 17th and 28th ult.— WILLIAM DALTON, alias DAYTON, J. WILLIAMS, and ARTHUR DAY, age about 28, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., rather stout build, complexion fair, full face, small brown side whiskers, eyes blue, very large nose ; dress, plaid jacket and vest, check trousers, plaid cap with peak, all light, generally wears a pair of brown leggings. He obtains lodgings at eating houses by stating that he is a gamekeeper to a gentleman in the district. Talks of Uxbridge and Hemel Hempstead, Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Mardlin, North- ampton. SHROPSHIRE. 28.— LudlOW ( County).— For obtaining £ 90 10s. by a forged cheque — FRANCIS ROBERT GOODALL, a solicitor's clerk, age 19, height 6 ft., slight build, complexion sallow, hair ( cut short) sandy, eyes ( small) dark, walks erect and turns his feet out, thick lips, long nose, very long arms and fingers, cross cuts on back of head, full- rigged ship, soldier and sailor, crown, anchor, skull and cross- boncs, two dog3 fighting, birds, bracelet, < 5tc., tattooed in red aud blue on right arm and wrist; dress, when last seen, short brown jacket and vest, dark rib twill, rather small dark check trousers, pieced at bottom, light brown stripe cap. He left. 9th ult., fop Liverpool, where he has friends. He may enlist in Army or Navy, or go to South Africa. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Hayward, Ludlow. 29.— Oswestry ( County).— For stealing, 30th ult., 8- i. 6d. and a pair of braces ( button bole at> back sewn with black thread)— THOMAS JONES, age 21, height 5 ft. 3 in., rather stout, complexion pale, hair brown, moustache light sandy; dress, black- and- grey plaid jacket, cord sleeved vest, cord trousers, blue- and- white spotted muffler, militia shirt, Bocks, and boots, black plush cap. A collier; sometimes travels the country hawking tins, combs, & c. Carried a brown basket covered with oilcloth. Had with him a black- and- tan terrier pup. Is foud of singing and dancing in public houses, and is known at Oswestry, Llangollen, and Widnes. Be- longs to the Wrexham militia. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Langford, Oswestry. 30.— Whitchurch ( County). — For embezzle- ment— EDWARD MORRIS, a brewer's traveller, age 37, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion fresh, hair, side whiskers and moustache brown ; dress, when last seen, claret- color coat and vest bound with black braid, grey tweed trousers, black hard felt hat, lace boots. He also had a pair of brown plaid trousers, light dust- coat, and brown hard felt hat. Was formerly a clerk at Stoke- upon- Trent, and may seek similar employment. He is a baritone singer, and may be found singiug in public housos. Warrant issued. Information to Snpt. Edwards, Whitchurch. SUSSEX ( EAST). 31.— Eastbourne ( Borough). — For obtaining money by false pretences— FRANK C AVANNA, age 22, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion pale, very clear, hair red, slight ginger moustache; wearing long dark grey frieze overcoat and black hard felt hat. He called on a clergyman, on 30th ult., stating he had got a situation as clerk at Messrs. Ellis & Sons, coal merchants, Rugby, and obtained money under the pretence that it was to pay his railway fare, whereas he absconded from their service on 27th ult. He will probably attempt to obtain money at other towns by similar means. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Plumb, Eastbourne. TYRONE. 32. — Aughnacloy ( County). — For failing to appear to her bail at the Quarter Sessions, Dun- gannon, 15th ult., on a charge of larceny— MARY JACKSON, alias GEERY, or McGEERY, a house- maid, age about 40 ( looks younger), above medium height, complexion fresh, regular face, wears dark brown wig with rather heavy fringe on forehead, eyes dark ; well dressed. A native of Cumberland. Was head housemaid at Caledon Hill, Tyrone, and has been in similar situations in England and abroad. Warrant issued. Information to District Inspector Gamble, Augh- nacloy. TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 13, 1894. T H E POLICE GAZETTE. 3 WARWICKSHIRE. 33.— Longford ( County).— For housebreaking, 4th inst., at Fillongley, and stealing 2 jackets, 1 pair of sheets, and a pair of blankets— WILLIAM WEST, age 40, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion sallow, hollow cheeks, hair and heavy moustache ( tnrning grey) and eyes dark; dress, black rib jacket, dirty moleskin vest, dark cord trousers, rail- way porter's cap. blucher boots. Was formerly in the 14th Yorkshire Regiment. Has been in custody at Manchester for larceny; native of Fillongley. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Prosser, Longford. WILTSHIRE. 34.— Malmesbury ( County).— For horsesteal- ing, 18th nit., at Grittenham— A MAN, ago about 33, height 5 ft. 10 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, heavy light brown moustache ; dress, blue pilot coat, cord or grey cloth trousers, grey peak cap, heavy lace boots. An Irishman ; supposed well known in Bristol as a horse- coper. Is concerned with John Donovan, in custody, see Case No. 57. Information to Supt. Tyler, Malmesbury. 35. — Swindon ( County). — Escaped from custody, with handcuffs, on 22nd ult., charged with larceny — GEORGE PRICE ( supposed false), age 36 ( looks younger), height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., com- plexion fair, hair and slight moustache brown, eyes hazel, 1 upper left tooth deficient; dress, black jacket and vest, grey and black stripe trousers, turn- down collar, white tie, grey flannel shirt, black bowler hat, black beaver overcoat, with velvet collar ( stolen), black bowler hat, new lace boots with broad welts. Supposed native of London. Information to Supt. Collett, Swindon. YORKSHIRE ( EAST RIDING). 26— Great Driffield ( County).— For stealing I pair of gaspipe tongs, 1 new fiat file, 3 screw keys, 1 chisel, and 1 1^- lb. hammer, in a canvas bag, 18 in. long — A MAN, age about 30, height 5 ft. 10 in., complexion fair, full face, slight light moustache, walks very erect; dress, black coat, blue jacket, cord trousers, white collar, black scarf and • cap. A fitter or wheelwright. Information to Supt.
