Fariitv/ jrs concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will he inserted in one issue of the roLicn !/: ZKTTB, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 3. l'art - Uars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the art hie in question to be thereby identified. 4. In vU Kites where a reward is offered the name and address of some person responsible for the p i j/ rrsnt must be given, and the exact conditions be clearly stated. 6. Put traits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stall r. property, will be prominently inserted, with detailed particulars, at a cost of 15s. per portrait, and of Is. id. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, including the expense of engraving on wood. 6. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; ana, if the name of such person he required to be inserted, and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and are alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force whic i causes part iculars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZEITB, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases, the officer signing the request for insertion of any announcement, tall be wholly responsible for any proceedings which may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwaraed so as ta be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only, be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office. New Scotland Yard, by cheque, crossed " Drummond If Co.," Post Office Order payable at Parliament- st., Postal Order, or in Stamps. 13. Advertisements are accepted for the POLICE GAZETTE through Mr. James Willing, 125, Strand, London, the sole Agent, who will furnish the rates on application. 14. The following is a copy of the order which governs the circulation, by the Metropolitan Police, of advertisements, or reward bills, for the discovery of property or the detec- tion of crime. The Editor inserts it, in hope of preventing delays which sometimes occur in publishing such notices, on account of their not being in accordance with the regu- lations in force in the Metropolis :— 1. Printed hand- bills, or other advertisements, offering a reward for the discovery of property or the detection of crime, whether printed and issued by the Metropolitan Police, or distributed and exhibited, with the sanction of the Commissioners, on the application of private persons, or of the Police of any County or Borough, must be clearly Expressed in relation to the following points- fa) The amount of the reward. (&) The conditions on which it is payable, ( o) The person by whom it will be paid, ( d) That the name and address of the printer appear thereon. APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT. METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT. 1.— E Division.— Woodcut portrait and de- scription of STRODE UPTON ROBINS, whose 42, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., hair and moustache very dark, fall face, cheeks and neck very fleshy, small w « rt on one eyelid, walks quickly and erect, weight about 15 stone; dresses well, and of gentlemanly appearance. Has relatives residing at Denton Court, near Gravesend, and said to be well known to police and other officials there. Is identical with Edwin Thomas Tadman ( Case No. 1, Police Gazette, 4th August last), wanted for disobedience of an order of the Bankruptcy Conrt. Warrant issued. 3.— D Division.— For fraud — J. V1ED, ago alunf A7. lic'^ Vit 5 tt 9 or 10 in., complexion sallow, hair ( turning grey) dark, eyes brown, cast in left, and near- sighted, plausible manner; dress, black cloth overcoat, dark twee 1 jacket suit, black hard felt hat. A native of London. He orders goods, chiefly bedclotbing, at large establishments, and gives a worthless cheque or bill in payment. Warrant issued. is sought for failing to surrender to his recognizances at the Central Criminal Court, upon a charge of libel:— Age about 45, medium height, complexion fresh, heavy sandy beard and moustache; well known at Eastbourne. Warrant issued. apprehension is sought for stealing £ 3,400 since August last— Age 43, height 6 ft., complexion sallow, hair and moustache dark brown ( turning grey), sometimes wears a beard, powerful build, slightly knock- kneed; gentlemanly appearance. May go abroad. A solicitor; late of 35, Bedford- row, W. C. Father resides at Delaport, Wheathampstead, Herts. Warrant issued. 4 — G Division.— Woodcut portrait and de- scription cf LOUIS COLLINS, whose apprehension * 2.— E Division.— Portrait and description of EDWIN THOMAS TADMAN, late a solicitor of 4, FRIDAY, SEPTEMBKR 194, 1893. THE POLICE GAZETTE. 3 little fingers bent inwards, 2 toes on one foot have been injured; dress, pilot jacket, light vest, dark corduroy trousers, black hard felt hat, lace boots. Has been in the Army. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Parish, Hertford. HUNTINGDONSHIRE 26.— St. Ives ( County).— For larceny ( bailee)— ALFRED WILLIAM BREWER, age 30 to 35, height about 5 ft. 7 in., knock- kneed, frequently walks with both hands in trouser pockets, throws his chest out. He came to St. Ives in May last, as a journeyman tailor, and afterwards started business for himself, and has pledged the articles left with him for repair. Warrant issued. Information to Sapt. Hibbins, St. Ives. KENT. 27.— Maidstone ( County).— For obtaining a van by false pretences, at Lenham, 24th ult.— RICHARD LARKING, age about 50, height about 5 ft. 8 in., stout build, broad shoulders, complexion fresh, hair . and moustache light brown, small side whiskers, eyes grey, very short neck, stoops slightly, walks with slouching gait, flat- footed and turns his feet outwards; dress ( generally), old light diagonal overcoat, old tweed suit, Muller- cut- down or hard felt hat. A native of Maidstone, and was formerly in business with his brother, a carrier, there. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Holman, Wren's Cross, Maidstone. 28 — Dover ( Borough).— For stealing, 15th inst., a pur- e containing four £ 5 Bank of England notes, one £ 1 Bank of Ireland note, and £ 5 or £ 3 in gold— ELLEN COLWILL, age about 30, medium height, birthmark on upper lip, which gives it the appear- ance of a hare- lip ; dress, dark clothes and hat. Is accompanied by her husband, a bootmaker, age about 35, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., slight build, com- plexion sallow, shabbily dressed; and 2 boys and a girl, ages 4, 6, and 8 respectively. They booked to Ohariog Cross, London, S. E. Railway by the 5.30 a m. train from Dover having an oval- top tin trunk, about 2 ft. 6 in. loDg, and 1 ft. 6 in. wide. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Sanders, Dover. LANCASHIRE. 29.— Leigh ( County). — For stealing a gentle- man's keyless silver watch, No. 120211, white dial, with " H. Peak & Son, London," engraved thereon, and 19s. 10d.— PETER CULLED, age 38, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion sallow, hair dark ( turn- ing grey); dregs, dark clothing, felt hat. A tramp- ing shoemaker. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Higginbotham, Leigh. £ 1 REWARD. 30.— Old Swan ( County).— For stealing, 12th inst., at Tuebrook— 1 gold breast- pin, small diamond in centre; 1 gold oblong locket, Masonic emblem engraved thereon, " G" in centre, plate on other side for name ; 1 small gold fob chain, about 6 in long; 1 topaz seal; 3 gold studs, coral tops, pearl in centre ; 2 ditto, opals in centre, gipsy setting ; 1 large oval- shape silver locket, ornamented with leaves; 1 ' pair silver bracelets, fancy work round rim ; 1 silver bracelet, ornamented with 3 imitation buttons and button- holes; 1 gentleman's silver card case, square shape, supposed " W. R. M. " on side; 1 enamelled scent bottle, about 8 in. long, blue and gold one side, supposed plain the other— A MAN ( who pledged two other breast- pins stolen from the house), age 25 to 30, complexion fresh, hair dark, no whiskers or moustache, eruption on face, high cheekbones, stout build, very square shoulders, of soldierly appearance, speaks with cockney accent; dress dark suit, white collar and tie, black hard felt hat. The above reward will be paid by William Robert Miller, 33, Moscow Drive, West Derby, to any person giving such information as will lead to the apprehension and conviction of the thief and the recovery of the property, or in proportion to the amount recovered. Bryning, Old Swan. 31— Old Trafford ( County).— For obtaining money by means of a trick — A WOMAN, age about 50, height 5 ft. 2 in., stout build, complexion fresh, red cheeks, bair light brown ; dress, red dress, light brown shawl with mixed white border, whit © apron, black bonnet, trimmed with crape. Information to Supt. Bent, Old Trafford. 32.— Liverpool ( City).— For failing to report — License Holder JOSEPH BROWN, alias JOHN BROWN, Office No. 42728, age 34, height5 ft. 4 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes grey, lost right forefinger, 5 small dots base of left thumb, scar back of neck. Sentenced at Liverpool, 12th Novem- ber, 1883, to 10 years penal servitude, and a rema- net of a former sentence for burglary. Licensed 13th April, 1892. D J 215. It is requested that, if found, he may be dealt with under the Prevention of Crimes Act, 1871, as amended by the Penal Servitude Act of 1891. Information to the Assistant Head Constable, Detective Department, Liverpool. 33.— Liverpool ( City).— Woodcut portrait and description of HARRY STEWARD McINTOSH, height about 5 ft. 8 in., complexion pale, hair and whiskers grey; dress, black coat and vest, dark trousers, and bat; wears collar and tie, and carries a walking- stick. A tramping watchmaker ; supposed native of Coventry. Wears spectacles when at work, and is very polite in his manner. May endeavour to obtain watches elsewhere, by similar means. Information to Supt. Kennedy, Wooler. whose apprehension is sought for stealing £ 100, age 33, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion fresh, hair, side whiskers, moustache and eyes dark, abscess mark right side of face. Respectable appearance. A clerk ; native of Liverpool. Warrant issued. Information to Assistant Head Constable Allbutt, Detective Department, Liverpool. 34. NORFOLK. Thetford ( County) — For larceny — ALFRED REDGRAVE, Case No. 26,15th Septem ber last, not yet arrested ; last seen Southend- on- Sea. Will probably be employed as a bricklayer's labourer. Warrant issued. Information to Inspector Simpson, Thetford. NORTHAMPTONSHIRE. 35.— Northampton ( Boroiigh).— For obtain- ing food and money by false pretences, between 14th and 17th inst., also for stealing on 16th inst., a silver albert, long twisted links, lock attached, made of 2 threepenny pieces, dated 1856 ; a silver ring, set white stone; and 6s. in money.— A man who gave the name of ADAMS, age about 2S, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., complexion, hair and slight moustache dark; dress, dark clothes, hard felt hat. Supposed wanted for similar offences elsewhere. Warrant issued. 36.— Northampton ( Borough).— For obtaining £ 14 14s. by means of a worthless cheque, 3rd inst. — W. SPINDLER, alias J. BOWRING, and SPINDLE, age 28 to 30, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., hair and moustache brown, small side whiskers; dress, dark suit, and may be wearing a long grey overcoat and low hat. The cheque was drawn upon the London and County Banking Co., 4 & 5, Upper- street, Islington, by " Bowring aud Co.. in favour of ' J. Bowring,' " and was endorsed " J. Bowring." He was formerly a hosier at 37, High- street, Islington. On 30th ult. he was staying at Holt's Hotel, Liverpool- street, London, where he assumed the name of Bowring. He attends race meetings, and may be found at first- class hotels. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Mardlin, North- ampton. STAFFORDSHIRE. 38.— Burslem ( County).— For larceny ( bailee) — WALTER NUTTALL, age 24, height 5 ft. 1 in., complexion pale, hair brown, eyes grey. Is a watch and clock cleaner, and pledges articles entrusted to him to repair, and has several time3 been convicted of this offence. Supposed on tramp. A native of Ne wcastle- under- Lyme. Warrant issued. 39.— Burslem ( County). — For stealing 12s., 14th inst.— ROSE L. TURNER, a domestic servant, age 17, height 4 ft. 10 or 11 ii>., complexion, hair, and eyes dark, rather smart appearance; dress, new slate- colour dress, and grey plaid cloak with cape, slate- colour or fawn straw hat with red flower and buds, lace boots. Native of Hampstead Heath, London. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Supt. Hill, Burslem. NORTHUMBERLAND. 37.— Wooler ( County).— For stealing a watch ( recovered), larceny ( bailee)— A MAN, age about 60, SUFFOLK. 40.— Ipswich ( Borough).— For embezzlement— WILLIAM FREEMAN, age about 20, height 5 ft. 6 in., weight about 9 stone, complexion pale, hair ( inclined to curl) light brown, pimples on face; dress, navy- blue overcoat, velvet collar. A draper's assistant. Warrant issued. Information to Lieut.- Col. Russell, Chief Con- stable, Ipswich. SURREY. 41.— Dorking ( County).— For assaulti- g a police constable in the execution of his duty, 10th inst., at Merstham— Three men: ( 1st) WILLIAM CLARK, age 26, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., complexion, hair, and moustache dark; dress, drab livery overcoat, cord trousers, hard black felt hat; ( 2nd) age 28, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion, hair, thick whiskers and moustache dark; dress, old black overcoat, cord trousers, black hard felt hat; ( 3rd) age 26, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., complexion fair, hair light; dressed in old dark clothes. These men travel the country gathering briars, and are accompanied by three women, and a boy about 10 years of age. They drive an old chestnut pony and large costermonger's harrow, " William Clarke, Eastbourne," on side. They also have with them a piebald pony, about 13 hands; a brown pony ( spring hocked), and an old spring cart. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Collis, Dorking. SUSSEX ( EAST). 42.— Lewes ( County).— For stealing, 8th inst, at Glynde— A yellow brocade silk evening- dress ; 1 brown dress, trimmed velvet; 1 black dress; 1 plain gold brooch, initials " M. A. C." thereon ; 1 gold bar brooch ; 1 loDg black boa ; 3 yards maltese lace; 4 yards Swiss embroidery; 1 alpaca evening skirt; 1 plated dessert- spoon ; 5 do. table- spoons ; 4 do. table- forks, with crest— a bear; 1 salt- spoon ; and 2 tea- spoons— A WOMAN, aged 28 to 30, short, com- plexion, hair and eyes dark ; dress, dark clothing, with small dark bonnet. A Frenchwoman. Had been engaged as nurse, and, after remaining a week, absconded with above property. 43.— Lewes ( Coutity).— For stealing 4 cows ; 1 heifer; and 2 steers— A man who gave the name of GEORGE DUNN, age 45 to 50, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., complexion and bair dark, long full beard, whiskers, and moustache, slightly turning grey, wearing dark overcoat, and black hat. The appear- ance of a farmer or dairyman. He bought the above at an auction, and took them away without paying, and sold them at Reading Cattle Market, 4th inst. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. CLEGG, HENRY WATSON, and HARRY WILSON, Office No. 42587, age 49, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion fair, hair sandy ( bald), eyes blue, scar left side head, top of forehead ( long), centre of back, inside top of 2nd right fioger and top of 1st left finger, small of right leg bent outwards from fracture. Sentenced at Leeds, 18th October, 1886, to 7 years penal servitude and 5 years police super- vision for larceny. A M 1125. i Information to Supt. Whiucup, Pontefract. PERSONS IN CUSTODY. METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT. 95.— K Division.— Remanded, at Thames Police Court, till 11 a. m., 28th, for housebreaking— THOS. WILES ( supposed false), a stevedore, age 31, height 5 ft. 3 in., complexion, hair, eyes, and moustache dark, 3 scars on right side of face; dress, black coat and vest, grey trousers, red tie, white collar, black hard felt hat. Supposed previously convicted and sentenced to 20 years penal servitude for man- slaughter whilst committing a burglary at Cardiff; released after undergoing 4 years. May be known at Bristol as " Dark Harry." The attention of warders, &;., is called to this man. Information to be forwarded to the Metropolitan Police Office, New Scotland Yard, S. W. SUSSEX ( EAST). 96.— Eastbourne ( Borough).— Remanded till 27th inst. for obtaining £ 14 14*. by a worthless cheque— JOHN WILLIAM SPINDLE R, a com- mercial traveller, of 115, Mercer- road, Tufnel- park, London, age 26, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion fresh, hair and eyes brown, boil- mark back of neck. He had in his possession a number of blank cheques. Supposed wanted at Northampton and elsewhere. Information to the Chief Constable, Borough Police, Eastbourne. PROPERTY STOLEN. MONTGOMERYSHIRE. 97.— Welshpool ( County). — 21st inst., at Guilsfield— 1 pair black cloth trousers ( worn); 1 white night dress, new feather- stitched on front; 2 pairs men's blue woollen stockings, white tops and toes; 1 grey and brown stripe flannel shirt; several pairs women's black woollen stockings ; and several white pocket handkerchiefs, one marked " K" in red. Tramps suspected. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Crowden, Welshpool. ANIMALS, ETC., STOLEN. BUCKINGHAMSHIRE. £ 10 REWARD. 98.— Chesham ( County).— 12th September last, at Penn— A dark brown horse, aged, 15 hands 2, white spot on forehead, rather long mane and tail, mane in centre of neck falls over on near side, sand- crack inside off forefoot, in good condition; value from £ 20 to £ 30 ; a strong dogcart, nearly new, painted dark blue, picked out light blue lines, 3 springs, 2 steps each side front, shafts outside body and fixed to springs, " Gold, Long- acra," on white metal axle boxes, spring fastenings to tail- board, 2 lamps ( glass cracked), 2 indiarubber mats, box driving- seat, covered blue cloth, 2 cushions and straps, patent seat worked by a lever, traces fasten to a whippletree, and a set of black double- stitched harness, white metal mounts, no rosettes to bridle, one trace repaired near front end, driving end of reins brown, patent leather collar. The above reward will be paid by Mr. F. G. Larkin, Penbury Farm, Penn, to any person giving such information as will lead to the apprehension and conviction of the thief or thieves and the recovery of the property. Information to Supt. NORTHAMPTONSHIRE. 79.— Towcester ( County). — Disposed of on the 4th inst, by License Holder GEORGE BAKER, Office No. 44095, whose apprehension is sought for horsestealing ( see Case No. 45).— A set of stroDg harness, consisting of a head bridle with 7 plated loops on front, large plated pieces each side with letters J. M. thereon, silver- plated square buckles and loop on throat, strap ( only) on near side for bearing rein; a large collar, brown when new, with silver- plated hames and traces fastened to same with 7 links and swivel at end; and a saddle with silver- plated fittings, square buckles and two silver- plated loops on each side for belly- band, crupper and breeching attaehed with J. M. on both sides, and an ornamental horse's head on saddle for bearing- rein. Was contained in a new 4- bushel sack with " C. T. Scrivener, 1893, 10, Jewry- street, Mark- lane, E. C." thereon. Information to Supt. Norman, Towcester, who has possession of the property. 91.— Buckingham ( County).— For stealing 2 sheep ( recovered), 28 th ult.— JOSE PH KINGS LEY, a drover, age about 50, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., red, blotchy face, hair and eyes brown, strut in walking; dress, brown velveteen jacket, cord trousers, black hard felt hat, brown leather gaiters. Well known to cattle dealers, and attends most of the Midland Counties' fairs and markets. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Clark, Buckingham. LANCASHIRE. 92.— Bury ( County).— For failing to report — License Holder JOHN WATSON DOUGLAS, alias JAMES O'BRIEN, JAMES HENRY, WM.
