REGULATIONS. 1. « Ah announcements for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communications upon them should be whtressed to ' 1' UE HOIRUU OF THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YABD, LONDON, K.'/ V. 2. Pari i< i .' j rs concern ing persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE '/^ ETTB, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 3. Part filar* as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the art hit in question to be thereby identified. 4. In v / 1 eases where a reward is offered the name and address of some person responsible for the p'l/ rrent must be given, and the exact conditions be clearly stated. 5. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stoh r. property, will be prominently inserted, with detailed particulars, at a cost of 15 » . per por trait, and of 7s. 6d. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, including the expense of engraving on wood. 6. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature uf an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; ana, if the name of such person be required to be inserted, and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not Less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and are alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases, the officer signing the request for insertion of any announcement, will be wholly responsible for any proceedings whicA may resirlt from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only, be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, Hew Scotland Yard, by cheque, crossed " Drummond Sf Co.," Post Office Order payable at Parliament- st., Postal Order, or in Stamps. 13. Advertisements are accepted for the POLICE GAZETTE through Jlr. James Willing, 12 o, Strand, London, the sole Agent, who will furnish the rates on application. 14. NOTICE. 1.— The composition of the Friday No. of the " Police Gazette" will be found arranged for easy reference as follows :— ( a) Regulations at top of 1st page. ( b) Apprehensions Sought. ( 1). Cities and Boroughs therein, arranged in strict alphabetical order. 2.— Any additional copies of the GAZETTE beyond the number at present supplied will be forwarded on application in the form set forth in circular of the 7th of November, 1883. 3.— It ia particularly requested that any oom- plaints as to the non- delivery or of irregularity in the date of delivery of the POLICE GAZETTE, may be at onoe notified to the Editor. The following is a copy of the order which governs the circulation, by the Metropolitan Police, of advertisements, or reward bills, for the discovery of property or the detec- tion of crime. The Editor inserts it, in hope of preventing delays which sometimes occur in publishing such notices, on account of their not being in accordance with the regu- lations in force in the Metropolis :— 1. Printed hand- bills, or other advertisements, offering a reward for the discovery of property or the detection of crime, whether printed and issued by the Metropolitan Police, or distributed and exhibited, with the sanction of fche Commissioners, on the application of private persons, or of the Police of any County or Borough, must be clearly expressed in relation to the following points— ( o) The amount of the reward. ( b) The conditions on which it is payable. ( « ) The person by whom it will be paid, ( d) That the name and address of the printer appear thereon. 3. No expression must bo used in such an advertise- ment, in relation to property stolen, or criminally taken or disposed of, holding out any expectation that the reward will be paid on its return without the offender being brought to trial, or without enquiry. Nora.— There are 177 Station of the Metropolitan FSHM Force at which Notice* can be potted. APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT. METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT. 1.— D Division. — For obtaining £ 20 by false pretences — MARIO N. MORO, age 45, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion dark, hair black, eyes brown, nose disfigured as if from a blow, stout build, heavy gait; dress, light brown suit, brown hard felt hat. He is in the habit of taking theatres for a short time, representing that his partner ia a man of means, and thus obtains money from various people. An Italian. Warrant issued. 2.— G Division. — For stealing, about 29th August last, 3 bills of exchange for £ 50, £ 48 and £ 45 13s. 9d. ( since discounted)— HYMaN BRODIE, a Jew, age 22 ( looks older), height 5 ft. 4 in., com- plexion and hair ( curly) dark ; dress, dark clothes, black hard felt hat. A cabinet maker. Warrant issued. 3.— G Division. — For stealing, 22od August last, a bicycle ( recovered)— J. BEARDSWORTH, alias ASUSTIN, age 24, height 5 ft. 11 in., com- plexion swaithy, hair black, small dark eyes, clean shaved, Ecar side of head, large deep scar across palm of left hand; dress, black coat and vest, light trousers, black hard felt hat, lace boots. Supposed an ex- trumpet- major of the 6tli Dragoon Guards. Warrant issued. 4. — p Division.— For obtaining, by false pre- tences, 26th ult.— A Roebuck safety bicycle, 30- in. front and 28- in. hind wheels, Silvertown pneumatic tyres, no break or mud guard, laced spokes, roller chain round cranks, red rubber pedals, black enamelled, gold transfer on head ( faint), " Roebuck & James," black hammock saddle— W. MARTIN ( supposed false), age 20, height 5 ft. 8 in., com- plexion very dark, hair and eyes dark; dress, dark jacket suit, with cap, low shoes. Warrant issued. 5— V Division. — For stealing £ 200 and 100 Post Office money order forms, Nos. 4701 to 4800. — SIDNEY H. BEECHING, a post office clerk, age 27, height 5 ft. 11 in., complexion fresh, hair light brown, slight side whiskers and moustache, eyes hazel, abscess scar right of neck, takes long strides in walking, erect and active and has a smart appearance, fond of billiard?, card- playing and horse- racing; dress, when last seen, dark brown tweed coat and vest, trousers of lighter material, black felt hat, check tie, lace boots. A native of Maidstone, Kent. May be accompasied by a woman, age 22, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., slight build, complexion fair, sharp features, rather long nose, hair light brown ; dress, dark fawn dress, trimmed silk of lighter shade, cross- over bodice, straw hat. Some of the orders have been cashed, bearing the stamp of the issuing office, No. 1, Lavender Hill, Clapham. Warrant issued. Information to be forwarded to the Metropolitan Police Office, New Scotland Yard, S. W. AYRSHIRE. 6.— Ayr ( County).— For assault with intent, on 3rd inst., and stealing a patent English silver lever watch, No. 3063, white dial, black chapters, gold hands, engine- turned cases, much worn, and a white metal small round link albert, attached— JOSEPH KERR, or CARR, age 24, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fresh, hair and small moustache dark, round face, thick lips, stout build, several pimples on neck and face ; dress, dark check tweed jacket suit, red, blue, and green silk neckerchief, mauve socks, black silk and velvet pieced cap, light lace shoes. A labourer or pit- sinker; native of Whitehaven. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable of Ayrshire, Ayr. BERKSHIRE. 7.— Wallingford ( County). — License Holder CHARLES ALLEN", Office No. 45123, age 39, height 5 ft. 10 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown ( turning grey), eyes grey, scar bridge of no3e, and inclines to right, abscess scar right ribs, hairy chest, scar left elbow, crown and anchor left forearm, cross flags right forearm, circumcised, small scar left buttock, right loin, and outside left thigh. Sentenced at Oxford Assizes, 14tli November, 1889, to 5 years penal servitude for arson. Licensed 17th August, 1893. P 469. Information to Snpt. Burlase, Wallingford. DEVONSHIRE. 8.— Exeter ( County). — For stealing foreign stamps to the value of £ 40, sent for selection to 40, Clapbam- park- road, London — WILLIAM ROBINSON, age 30 to 35, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., complexion fair, hair, side whiskers, and moustache dark; dress, dark clothes. Warrant issued. 9.— Exeter ( County). — On commitment war- rant, for failing to appear to a summons for a breach of the Highway Act— HAROLD F. BIRKETT, manager of Bostock Wombwell & Bailey's menagerie, age about 35, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in , complexion fresh, hair dark; dress, dark clothes. Information to the Chief Constable of Devon, Exeter. ESSEX. 10.— Brentwood ( County). — For obtaining food and lodgings and money by false pretences, at South Weald, 28th ult.— ARTHUR WOOD ( sup- posed false), age 26 to 28, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 in., complexion, hair ( fringed on forehead), moustache and eyes dark, high forehead, tattooed back of left band and wrist; dress, black double- breasted jacket, black vest, b'ack doeskin trousers, black hard felt hat, turn- down collar; the appearance of a ship's steward. GLAMORGANSHIRE. 11.— Cardiff ( Borough).— For failing to report — Supervisee PETER CASSIDY, Oflice No. 37877, ago 36, height 5 ft. 3 in, complexion fresh, hair reddish brown, eyes hazel, 2 scars left side neck, 1 below left knee, and large burn scar on left ribs, P. H. HcG. on rt forearm, P. C and small anchor on left forearm, P. C. A. S. S. back of left hand, dot back of right wrist. Sentenced at Manchester, loth June, 1832, to 7 years penal servitude and 7 years police supervision for breaking and entering. I 611. Information, to the Chief Constable, Cardiff. HEREFORDSHIRE. 12.— Weobley ( County).— For obtaining money by false pretences RO BINSON, age about 35, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion swarthy, hair ( inclined to curl), moustache, and side whiskers very dark, lump on right wrht; dress, black coat and vest, grey and dark stripe trousers, bine muffler, white spots,' brown hairy cap, light lace boots. He represents himself a3 a large buyer of apples, bargains for them, and stating he will fetch them in a few days, obtains food and money and absconds. Warrant issued. 13.— Weobley ( County).— For stealing a metal case lever stop- watch, stop taken out, 2 keyholes at back, hair curb chain and 2 keys attached— A MAN, age about 46, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion dark, hair brown, heavy moustache and whiskers ( cnt short) sandy, eyes brown ; dress, black coat, brown vest, knitted jersey, cord irousers, black do. under, white hat, heavy lace boots. A tramping sweep ; native of Worcestershire. 14. — Weobley ( County). — For obtaining by false pretences, a geneva watch, maker, " Read, Coventry," " P. Owens" scratched inside case— A man, -, vho gave the name of MELLER, age 40 to 45, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion and hair ( bald in front) dark, whiskers round chin brown, red blotchy nose ; dress, tweed jacket and vest, striped trousers, straw hat with black band. A tramping watcli and clock cleaner ; carries a black leather bag. Is addicted to drink. Information to Supt. Owens, Weobley. HERTFORDSHIRE. 15. — Bishop's Stortford ( County). — For embezzlement— GEORGE BOLTON, age 19, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in , complexion pale, hair light brown, eyes hazel, scar bridge of nose, B tattooed on arm ( supposed left), tattoo marks on wrist; dre3S, brown plaid coat and vest with small velvet buttons, old grey waistcoat, dark cord trousers, hard felt hat, nailed boots. A native of Much Hadham, from which place he absconded 1st inst, supposed with the intention of enlisting. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Tripp, Bishop's Stortford. 16.— Hertford ( County).— For absconding from Hertfordshire Reformatory, also stealing, 20th ult, from Hertford Infirmary, a japanned cash- box, about 12 in. long, 6 in. wide, painted black and gold, three compartments, containing five Bank of England £ 5 notes, four of which are dated 6.5.93, and numbered 61515, 61516, 61517, and 61518; £ 10 3s. cash; and a gentleman's gold signet ring— RICHARD GOD DARD, age 19, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion pale, hair light brown, eyes ( sunken) grey, hollow cheeks, low forehead; dress, dark blue cloth Glengarry cap, trimmed with broad black braid, surmounted by narrow red braid, drab Derby tweed jacket and vest, buttons game colour as clcth, ronnd roll collar, cord trousers with white bone buttons, blue- and- red striped cotton shirt with collar, bright red tie, grey ootton socks, strong lace boots, nailed diagonally across soles, nearly new ; clothing numbered " 448." A native of Folkestone. Information to Supt. Parish, Hertford. 17.— Watford ( County). — Woodcut portrait and description of CHARLES D. BRIGDEN, whose apprehension is sought for embezzlement— Age 33, height 5 ft. 4 in,, complexion rather dark, thin face, hair ( turning grey), moustache and side whiskers dark, eyes rather full; dress, dark lounge suit; respectable appearance, and of good address ; walks quickly, right foot turns inward. Native of Cuckfield, Sussex. He obtained a situation at Watford by a forged character, and may endeavour to do the same elsewhere. Warrant issued. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Pearson, Watford. KENT. 18— Canterbury ( City). — For stealing, by trick, 4th inst.— A lady's silver watch, No. 23005, inside case worn, twisted pattern silver chain at- tached ; 1 silver brooch, composed of a whip, hoof at end of handle, horseshoe in centre, set brilliants ; 1 black skirt; and a white apron— A WOMAN, age about 35, short, complexion dark, thin face, very bad teeth; dress, black dress, long brown ulster, brown velvet on shoulders, black hat trimmed crape. Gipsy appearance ; a hawker ; carries a basket con- taining combs, brushes, & c. Information to Chief Constable Farmery, Canter- bury. * 19.— Chatham ( County).— For larceny ( lodger) — A MAN, age about 31 or 32, height 5 ft. 7 in., hair and moustache fair; dress, drab overcoat, black morning coat and vest, light cloiii trousers, white straw hat with black band. Has been a canvasser for Singer Sewing Machine Co. He obtains lodgiDgs for 2 or 3 days, ransacks drawers, and decamp3 without paying for his lodgings. He also calls upon customers of the Singer Sewing Machine Company to see their sewing machines, representing himself as a workman for the Company, and when shewn the machine, he states it is out of repair, and that he will take it to the shop and repair it; he also obtains the receipt and disposes of the machine. 20.— Chatham ( County).— For stealing £ 49 in gold — ALFRED WILLIAM BUTLER, age 18, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion fair, hair light brown, scar from boil right elbow, cut scar on thumb large irregular tooth front of upper jaw; dress, black diagonal suit, blue striped shirt, No. 18 stamped on back, plaid silk necktie, " P. & O." cap, low shoes. A baker; has served as cook on board the " Alberta" of Whitstable. Information to Supt. Lacy, Chatham. 21. — Dartford ( County). — For stealing at Swanley, 3rd inst.— 3 overcoats ( 1 brown, velvet collar; 1 bine beaver, velvet collar, black rib lining; 1 grey mixture, blue serge lining, " Gaslight and Coke Company," on tab); I drab silk sc\ rf; 2 light cloth caps; 1 black hard felt hat— TWO MEN : 1st, age about 26, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., complexion, hair, and eyes dark, clean shaved; dresj, old cord trousers, old boots, cut across fronts, walks lame on left leg. 2nd, age about 22, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., complexion fair, hair dark brown, clean shaved; dress, black diagonal cloth jacket, light trousers. Supposed to be wearing the stolen coats. Information to Supt. Webster, Dartford. 22.— Folkestone ( Borough).— For stealing, 3rd inst., an " Elk" safety bicycle, Model " B," makers, Bennett, Cotton & Co., nearly new Dunlop detachable tyres, rubber- lined brake, no mud guards, rubber pedals, drooped handle- bar, felt handles, enamelled black and lined— A man, who gave tho name of " SMITH," age about 30, height 5 ft. 9 in , complexion fair, slight moustache; dress, grey tweed jacket and knickerbockers, brown stockings, cycling shoes. Information to Supt. Taylor, Folkestone. LANCASHIRE. 23.— Bootle ( County).— For burglary— Super- visee ROI5WRT GOODCHILD, alias THOMAS THORP, THOMAS WALKER, and MICHAEL McCANN, Office No. 37570, age 60, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion fair, hair dark brown, eyes hazel, scar right cheek, right elbow, right forearm, right calf, right shin, right shoulder, and 4th left toe, slightly pockmarked, walks erect, military appearance ; dress, black cloth coat and vest, bine cloth trousers, black billycock hat. Sentenced at Central Criminal Court, 6th August, 1878, to 14 years penal servitude and 5 years police supervision for horsestealing, and at Manchester, 2Gth July, 1893, to 1 month hard labour for failing to report. Was seen in Bow, London, in September la9t. Warrant granted. Information to Supt. Walsh, Bootle. 24.— Liverpool ( City).— For failing to report- License Holder THOMAS WILSON, alias EVANS, WM. CARR, JAMES BRENNAN, EDWARD COCKBURN, PATRICK KELLY, HENRY JOHNSON, and JOHN O'NIEL, Office No. 45274, age 71, height 5 ft. 3 in., complexion fresh, hair grey ( bald), eyes hazel, lost end of 2nd right finger, scar outside right arm Sentenced at Leicester Ses- sions, 29th October, 1885, to 7 years penal servitude for stealing boots. Released on 2nd licence, 23rd ult. L 512. Information to the Assistant Head Constable, Liverpool. 25. — Burnley ( Borough). — Woodcut portrait ( taken about 4 years ago) and description of GEORGE JOHN DUROSE, alias JOHN GEO. BARKER, a tram conductor, whose apprehension is sought for attempting to murder his wife, by shoot ing her with a revolver, age 31, height 5 ft. 7^ in., complexion fair, hair light brown, birthmark corner of left eye; dress, brown overcoat, dark fustian trousers, black billycock hat, lace boots; looks dissi- pated. A native of Wolverhampton. Information to Chief Constable Harrop, Burnley. LINCOLNSHIRE. 26.— Sleaford ( County).— For stealing an over- coat ( recovered)— WILLIAM ALLEN, age 36 to 40, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in,, hair ( cnrly) light, heavy sandy moustache, full face, stout build; dress, light suit and cap. Stated he was a native of Leicester. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Richdale, Sleaford. MONMOUTHSHIRE 27.— Newport ( Borough). — For forging and uttering a cheque for £ 3, on 30th ult. — W. J. ALEXANDER, age 30 to 35, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., short black hair, may have a moustache ; smart ap- pearance and very active. Stated his wife and two children lived in Aigburth - road, Liverpool, and that his mother is living at Southampton. May seek employment as steward on board ship. Information to Head Constable Sinclair, New- port. NORTHUMBERLAND. 28.— Northumberland ( County).— For failing to report— License Holder ELIZABETH LONG- MIRES, alias LONGSTAFF, and JOHNSON, Office No. 44720, age 36, height 5 ft., complexion sallow, hair dark brown, eyes grey, scar right eyebrow and above left eyebrow, nose broken, scar between eye FRIDAY, SEPTEMBKR 133, 1893. T H E P O L I C E GAZETTE. 3 brows, face pockmarked, lost all front teeth upper jaw, ears pierced. Sentenced at Durham Sessions, 30th December, 1889, to 5 years penal servitude for felony. Licensed 4th May, 18S3. P 40. Information to Chief Constable, Northumberland. 29— Wooler ( County).— For stealing, 28th ult., at Bel ford — 2 glaziers' diamonds, 1 with dark handle ( recovered), 1 with white handle— PETER EARLEY, alias SIMPSON, age 35 to 40, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, mou- stache ginger, eyes blue, cut mark on side of nose, walks lame, having had broken leg ; dress, brown or grey jacket, blue trousers, grey cap. A tramping painter; native of Edinburgh. Information to Supt. Kennedy, Wooler. OXFORDSHIRE. 30.— Oxford ( County).— For horse- stealing at Cowley— WILLIAM WILSON DONALD, age 30, height 5 ft. 10 in., complexion, hair and heavy moustache black ; dress, dark coat and vest, grey cloth trousers, slate- colour cap. He frequents good hotels, and ( alks a great deal about dogs. May visit Edmonton. Is the same man described, with portrait, in Case No. 27, 11th Aug. last, and is concerned with Chas. F. Woods, Case No. 45, 6th inst. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, County Police Office, Oxford. 31.— Woodstock ( County).— For deserting his wife— JAMES RICE, age 37, height 6 ft., com- plexion fresh, hair and moustache light, eyes grey, cross flags tattooed supposed right forearm, scar right cheek. A tenor singer; native of Oxford; has been in the Army. May be found singing with the " Christiana" minstrels in the name of Montague. Has used the name of Hemming, Henderson, Beaumont, Roberts, Ac. Warrant issued. Information to Inspector Sorrell, Woodstock. SUFFOLK. 30.— Ipswich ( Be/ rough).— For obtaining board and lodgings by false pretences— ALFRED HUD- SON, age 26, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion swarthy, hair and eyes dark; dress, grey jacket, coat, lavender plaid trousers, brown- and- white plaid cap with peak, low shoes; smart appearance. Stated he is a native of Norwich. Warrant issued. Information to Lieut.- Col. Russell, Chief Con- stable, Ipswich. SHROPSHIRE. 32.— Bridgnorth ( County).— For failing to re- port— License Holder JOHN OWEN, alias " HILL FIRE JACK," Office No. 43668, age 53, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion sallow, hair dark brown, eyes grey, blue spot centre of forehead, scar bridge of nose, lost several front teeth, varicose veins left leg, miner's mark back of left shoulder. Sentenced at Salop Assizes, 8th December, 1888, to 5 years penal ser- vitude for unlawfully wounding. Licensed 17th September, 1892. A O 662. Also wanted for poaching. Information to Supt. Walters, Bridgnorth. 33. — Wellington ( County). — For larceny — HENRY CORBETT, age 50 ( looks much older), height 5 ft. 8- 3- in., complexion sallow, hair and eyes grey, heavy moustache, nearly white, crown and H. C. tattooed right forearm ; dress, light brown dustcoat, dirty brown cloth trousers, black felt hat, lace boots with very broad soles, much too large for him. A labourer; native of Wellington ; has served in the Army. May be found in a union or common lodging house. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Supt. Edwards, Wellington.
