X., No. 994. 1 All announcements for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communications upon them should be addressed to THE EDITOR OF THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND 1' ABD, LONDON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning persons tchose apprehension is sought will he inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 3. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions be clearly stated. 5. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property, will be prominently inserted, with detailed particulars, at a cost oflos. per portrait, and of 7s. Gd. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, including the expense of engraving on wood. G. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and, if the name of such person be required to be inserted, and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. REGULATIONS. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and are alphabetically arranged by counties. g. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on theiiiapprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in the next issua. 10. In all cases, the officer signing the request for insertion of any announcement, will be wholly responsible for any proceedings whic/ i may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only, be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, by cheque, crossed " Drummond fy Co.," Post Office Order payable at ParUament- st., Postal Order, or in Stamps. 13. Advertisements are accepted for the POLICE GAZETTE through Mr. James Willing, 123, Strand, London, the sole Agent, who will furnish the rates on application. 14. Cities and Boroughs therein, arranged in strict alphabetical order. 2.— Any additional copies of the GAZETTE beyond the nnmber at present supplied will be forwarded on application in the form set forth in circular of the 7th of November, 1883. 3.— It is particularly requested that any com- plaints as to the non- delivery or of irrogularity in the date of delivery of the POLICE GAZETTE, may be at onoe notified to the Editor. The following is a copy of the order which governs the eirculation, by the Metropolitan Police, of advertisements, or reward bills, for the discovery of property or the detec- tion of crime. The Editor inserts it, in hope of preventing delays which sometimes occur in publishing such notices, on account of their not being in accordance with the regu- lations in force in the Metropolis :— 1. Printed hand- bills, or other advertisements, offering i reward for the discovery of property or the detection of orime, whether printed and issued by the Metropolitan Police, or distributed and exhibited, with the sanction of 4he Commissioners, on the application of private persons, or of the Police of any County or Borough, must be clearly expressed in relation to the following points- fa) The amount of the reward. ( 6) The conditions on which it is payable. ( c) The person by whom it will be paid. ( d) That the name and address of the printer appear thereon. 2. No expression must be used in such an advertise- ment, in relation to property stolen, or criminally taken or disposed of, holding out any expectation that the reward will be paid on its return without the offender being brought to trial, or without enquiry. NOTE.— There are 177 Station of the Metropolitan FsUee Force at which Notices can be poited. METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT. 1— D Division. — ETHEL CHANTREY JOHNSON, Case No. 3, 30th nit., not to be arrested. Warrant withdrawn. 2.— E Division.— Forperjury, on25th November, 1892— ELIZABETH CONSTANCE TAYLOR, an American, age 35, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion pale, hair dark, eyes bluish grey; dress, dark satin dress, trimmed cream- colour lace over shoulders and cuffs, dark straw hat trimmed roses. Warrant issued. 3. — E Division.— For stealing £ 40 — CHARLES SPARKES, age 18, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion fair, hair light brown, eye3 grey; dress, dark drab suit, black hard felt hat. Native of London.— JAMES ATKINS, alias HENRY RILEY, age 18, height 5 ft. 3iin., complexion fresh, iiair and eyes brown; dress, dark clothes. Native of Wandsworth. 4.— F Division. — For embezzling £ 12 — ARCHER ADEY, age 32, height 5 ft. 7 in., com- plexion fair, hair and moustache light brown, eyes grey, full red face, and has the appearance of a man who drinks heavily; generally dressed in a brown tweed jacket and vest, grey striped trousers, turn- down collar, brown hard felt hat. May seek employment as a cycle salesman. Warrant issued. 5. — G Division. — Woodcut portrait and description of ALFRED BUCHANAN, whose apprehension is sought for embezzling about £ 350; age about 32, height 5 ft. S or 9 in., complexion pale, may be clean shaved, has a small growth on side of face near ear ( supposed left) ; of delicate appcarance; diessed well. A clerk ; native of Ayr- shire. Is known at Greenock and at Glasgow where his parents reside. Warrant issued. Information to be forwarded to the Metropolitan Police Office, New Scotland Yard, S. W. CITY OF LONDON. 6. — For endeavouring to extort money by threats— ALEXANDER WALKER, editor of the " Beacon" financial newspaper, late of [ New Broad- street House, E. C., age 54, height 5 ft. 9 in., stout build, complexion fresh, hair, whiskers, beard, and moustache ( turning grey) brown, wears glasses; dress, dark suit and high hat.— R. P. NOAH, late of King- street, Cheapside, age 60, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion pale; well dressed. Known as " Major" Noah. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. McWilliam, 26, Old Jewrv, E. C. BEDFORDSHIRE. 7. — Bedford ( Borough). — For stealing, 29th ult., a concert flute and a gold ring ( recovered) — FREDERICK ABRAMS, age 27, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., stout build, broad shoulders, com- plexion dark, hair x- eddish brown, moustache ( slight) fair, eyes dark, scar on left side of face from corner of eye downwards, tattooed both bands and arms, female and sailor right forearm, flowers on both arms and hand?, rings on several fingers, very large Roman nose, which appears to have bee a broken; dress, pilot cloth coat ani vest, dark brown tiousers, black hard felt hat, a ship's steward, ha? been in the Navy, and may be found at some sea- port town or in London. Information to Chief Constable Thody, Bedford. BERKSHIRE. S. — Abingdon ( Borough). — For failing to surrender at Abingdon Quarter Sessions for false pretences— THOMAS KNOTT ( late of Abingdon), age 42, height 5 ft. 8 in , complexion dark, hail- and moustache black, eyes hazel, very bid on his feet, and lurches forward when walking; dress, light brown fustian jacket or slop, cord trousers, heivy lace boots, c'oth cap with peak. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Heath, Abingdjn. 9 — Maidenhead ( Borough). — For stealing, 30tli ult., a silver curb pattern chain, squire, compass and silver mount, containing a shilling, 1693, attached— A MAN, ago 31, height 5 fr. 9 in., complexion fresh, sunburnt, hair and small pointed moustache brown, peculiar eyes ; dress, dirty dark jacket, dark trousers, dark blue cap with shiuy peak and straps, brass buttons in front, lase boots with wide soles ; carried a blue serge jacket. FRIDAY, JUNE 7, 1803. 10.— Maidenhead ( Borough). — For stealing, 29th ult, a 30- in. semi- diamond safoty bicycle, l|- in. front beam, shortened at neck end, recently repaired, Hancock's grey tyres, with name theroon in raised letters, direct spokes, Appleby chain, new left- hand cone on chain wheel spindle, which slides along bracket and fixed with nut underneath, com- bination spring and saddle— A man who gave the name of THOMAS MARTIN ( false), age about 35, height 5 ft. 9 in,, complexion pale, hair brown; dress, rusty- grey jacket, dark trouser3, straw hat; appearance of a carpenter. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Taylor, Maidenhead. 11.— Wokingham ( County).— For stealing at Wargrave, 28th ult., a brass cornet, " D. S. | W." eugraved on bell, and 72 " stamped near water- key— A YOUTH, age 18, height 5 ft. 3 in., com- plexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes brown, scar centre of forehead and on left forefinger ; dress, light suit and cloth cap. Information to Supt. Atkin, Wokingham. name, " Thomas Thomas"; 2 or 3 tablespoons; 2 salt spoons; 4 large forks; sugar basin and tongs; knife, fork, and spcon, all silver; 12 largo plated forks; 2 ladles; 2 gold pins; and a suit of brown Scotch tweed— ALFRED HONEYSETT, age about 30, height about 5 ft. 6 in., slight build, hair and moustache light brown, scars on neck, arms tattooed, " Lizzie" on left, lost part of 2 fingers right hand; dressed in the stolen clothes when he absconded, 26th ult. A labourer; supposed native of Batter- sea, London. Warrant issued. The above reward will be paid by Mr. F. F. Card, Britton Ferry, for the apprehension and conviction of Honeysett. CAMBRIDGESHIRE. 12. — Cambridge ( Borough). — For stealing, 27th ult.— 1 large gold twisted brooch; 1 silver enamelled brooch ; 1 small gold brooch, set pearls; 1 very large gold brooch, b'ue enamelled back with hair and initials " J. H." in pearls, containing minia- ture photo of a gentleman ; 4 hair bracelets with gold fastenings; 1 liair bracelet, gold fastenings, with photo of a boy; 1 hair bracelet, serpent pattern; 1 hair chain, gold mounts; 1 oval- shaped gold locket, set with glass; 1 gold vinaigrette; 1 lady's plain gold ring; 1 lady's gold ring, set turquoise and pearls ; 1 pair gold eye- glasses ; 1 gold seal; 1 longheaded purse with steel ring; and a five- guicea piece of Qu^ ea Anne's reign— A MAN, age 40 to 45, height about 5 fr. 6 in., stout build, complexion dark, fall face, litile or no whiskers; dress, long dark coat, and black hard felt hat; carried a cherrywood walking stick. CHESHIRE. 13.— Nantwich ( County).— For failing to re- port— GEORGE MORTON, alias GEORGE HAN- COCK, Office No. 44976, age 45, height 5 ft. 3 in., complexion fresh, hair light brown, eye3 brown, mole on back, abscess scar each side of left knee, scar top of 2nd hfc fiDger. Sentenced at Liverpool, 17th January, 188J, to 5 years.,' penal servitude for shop- breakirg, and 20th August, 1892, to 1 month hard labour, and- license revoked for frequenting, & c. Liberated on second license, 2Pth ult. Information to Supt. Leah, Nantwich. DERBYSHIRE. 14.— Ashbourne ( County). — For indecent assault at [ Biggin Hartington, oa 13th ult.— WILLIAM NAYLOR, innkeeper and horse- breaker, age 40, height 5 ft. 10 in., complexion fresh, hair and moustache brown; dress, grey cloih suit, lace boots, grey cloth cap. Formerly drove an omnibus between Chesterfield and Baslow, and may again seek similar cmpl'iymeut. Warrant issutd Information to Supt. Whetlc'on, Ashbourne. ESSEX. 15— Colchester ( Borough). — For larceny ( bailee), 22iul ult,— GEORGE WRIGHT ( supposed fictitious), age 45, height 6 ft., well built, com- plexion fair, hair ( turning grey) light brown, thick lips, a number of front teeth decayed ; dress, slate- colour coat and vest, dark trousers, black tie, black hard hat; was weaiing a gold twisted chain with seal attached, carries a brown leather bag. He takes lodgings at common lodging houses, and calls upon- jewellerj for work to do at home, and then decamps. Warrant issu; d. Information to Chief Constable Coombs, Col- chester. GLAMORGANSHIRE. £ 5 REWARD. 16.— Neath ( County). — For housebreaking, between £ 0th and 26th ult., at Britton Ferry, and fcttaUrg 18 teaspoons, fiddle pattern; 3 do., smaller, tame pattern ; 3 pairs tongs, inscription inside, with HAMPSHIRE. 17.— Southampton ( Borough).— For stealing four £ 5 Bank of England notes and £ 6 gold— CHARLES BAKER, age 19, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion fresh, hair ( inclined to curl) light, eyes blue, mole left cheek above chin, dimple right cheek, dent in forehead over right eye, old scratch corner of left eye; dres*, black diagonal coit and vest, dark stripe trousers, light tie, skull cip. Native of Southampton. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Berry, South- hampton. LANCASHIRE. 18.— Burnley ( Borough).— For obtaining, 16th ult., by false pretences — 2 ladies' 18- carat gold rings ( 1 half- hoop diamond, the other diamond and sapphire)— EDWARD STAINFORTH CATTLEY, age 23 or 24, height 5 ft. 1 or 2 in., stout build, complexion swarthy, hair and moustache dark brown, eye3 brown, walks erect; generally dressed in shooting suit; of gentlemanly appearance and good address. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Harrop, Burnley. 19.— Salford ( Borough).— For failing to report — License Holder GEORGE ARMSTRONG, alias JOHN THOMAS HOGG, GEORGE DAVIS, JOHN STEVENSON, JOHN McKENZIE, GEO. HARLAND, and FENTON, Office No. 44052, age 65, height 6 ft., complexion fresh, hair brown ( bald), eyes grey, scars right eyebrow, left side upper lip, in right groin, b'. ck of right calf, below each knee, and 2 inside left forearm, brown mark on each breast, mole back of right shoulder and on mu3cle of right a-. m. Sentenced at Derby, 11th March, 1E89, to 5 years penal servitude for fraud. Licensed 10th December, 1892. D P 1171. Information to the Chief Constable, Salford. 20.— Oldham ( Borough).— For failing to report — License Holder JOHN KENNY, alias THOMAS BERRY, Office No. 44798, age 33, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion fre3b, hair brown, eyes brown, scar centre of forehead, above eyebrows and on left cheek ; ruptured right side. Sentenced at Wake- field, 15th October, 18S8, to 5 years penal servitude and 5 years police supervision for larceny. Licensed 25th May, 1893. t K O 405. Informatioato the Chief Constable, Oldham. SUSSEX ( EAST). 23.— Brighton ( Borough).— For obtaining by false pretences— ALBERT JOHN LEE, age 32 or 33, looks older, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., com- plexion fair, hair and moustache dark browu, eyes dark ; dress, blue serge suit, white straw hat, brown boots. Supposed accompanied by his wife, ag£ 28 or 30, height 5 ft. 2 in., very light hair, supposed dyed. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Terry, Brighton, WARWICKSHIRE. 24. — Birmingham ( City).— For forgery — JOSEPH LITHERLAND, alias NAGGY LETHE- RIN, a nut and boltmaker, age 35, height 5 ft. 5 in,, complexion swarthy, moustache dark, small lump over left eyelid; dress, grey jacket and vest, mole- skin trousers, hard felt hat. Was last seen oil 29th ult., going in the direction of Wolverhampton. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Farndale, Bir- mingham. MONMOUTHSHIRE. 21. — Chepstow ( County). — For obtainiug money, boird, and lodgings by false pretences— CHARLES WOODHOUSE SHEPHERD, clerk in holy orders, late temporary curate at Caldicot, age 40 to 45, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion dark, hair ( bald on top) and small moustache dark, good teeth, very stout, short thick neck, full face, impediment in speech; is of intemperate habits; dressed in clerical attire. Has a brother, a curate, at St. Andrew's Church, Cardiff, and his father resides at Buxton, Derbj shire. Warrant issued. Information to Captain Parker, Supt., Monmouth. MONTGOMERYSHIRE, 22.— Welshpool ( County).— For stealing £ 1— JABEZ EDWARD JONES, age 22, height 5ft. 2 in., complexion fresh, hair light brown ; dre= s, brown cloth jacket and vest, light cloth trousers, black hard felt hat. He is a good second cornet player, and will endeavour to enlist into a hand; was last heard of in Shrewsbury. A labourer. Warrant is5ued. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Crowden, Welshpool. YORKSHIRE ( WEST RIDING). 25. — Huddersfield ( Borough). — For fraudulently appropriating large sums of money entrusted to him — THOMAS WESTERBY, an accountant and agent, age about 50, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., complexion sallow, dark brown hair and whiskers which are not very strong, looka very ill and walks with his head forward ; dress, dark cloth suit resembling melton cloth, slackback coat, and felt bat. BEDFORDSHIRE. 26.— Biggleswade ( County).— Remanded far picking pockets, at Sandy, on 29th ult.— Three men: 1st, GEORGE ANDERSON, ago 20, height 5 ft. 3i in., complexioa fresh, hair light brown, slight moustache, eyes grey; dress, blue coat and vest, blue plaid trousers, black felt hat. States lie is a cigarmaker, and worked for Mr. George Pike, of Arnold- road, Kilburn.- 2nd, GEORGE WRIGHT, age 25, height 5 ft. in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, small side whiskers and moustache dark, eyes grey; dress, dark mixture overcoat, black cloth coat and vest, dark blue trousers, with smalt red stripe. States he is a native of Liverpool, but has baeu living in London lately.— 3rd, CHARLES HILL, age 27, height 5ft. 3in., com- plexion fresh, hair dark brown, moustache light, eyes grey; dress, light dust coat, black cloth coat, vest, and trousers. States he is a shoemaker. Information to Supt. Smith, Biggleswade. BERKSHIRE. 27.— Hungerford ( County).— Sentenced, 28th ult., to 2 months imprisonment for assault— ELIZA- BETH LOVELL, a tramp, age 30, height 5 ft. 4| in., rather stout build, complexion fresh, hair light brown, eyes grey, scar left of nose and on left cheek, mole right cheek, near left eye, and left cf chin; dress, black b. dice, light skirt, brown and cream- colour plaid shawl, black straw hat trimmed with black. Sentenced to 11 days imprisonment for begging— JOSEPH GRICE, a tramp, age 40, height 5 ft. 6£ in., stout build, complexion fresh, hair browD, eyes bine, scar back of head, 2 anchors tattooed left arm ; dress, black coat and vest, dark trousers. Sentenced, 28th ult., to 3 months imprisonment for assault- WILLIAM MILLS, a tramp, age 25, height 5 ft. 5 in, slight build, complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes hazel, mole under right eye, very active; dress, dark jacket and vest, stripe trousers, black hard hat; appears well acquainted with prison discipline. He sings in the street, and was accompanied by a woman. Information to Inspector Molsher, Hungeiford. SHROPSHIRE. 46. — Shrewsbury ( County). — 17th ult., by housebreaking— A man's grey mixture coat, slate colour lining ; vest to match, white lining with red stripes; and a pair of black ribbed cloth troupers, fall front, black metal buttons. Information to Supt. Edge, Shrewsbury. STAFFORDSHIRE. 47. _ Wolverhampton ( Borough). — 14th ult., a safety bicycle, No. 5439, 30- in. wheels, cushion tyres, steel direct- action spokes, ball bear- ings to both wheels, bottom bracket, and pedals, adjustable seat pillar and handle- bars, white horn handles, adjustable foot rests on front fork, enamelled plain black, parts plated, lamp bracket, oil can, and spanner, makers " Quinton Cycle Co., Coventry." Information to Captain Burnett, Chief Constable, Wolverhampton. ANIMALS^ JETC., STOLEN. METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT 53.— L Division.— A light bay gelding, lGhands near hind heel white, short mane and tail; a set of silver- plated harness, Tilbury tugs, stag's head on blinkers; and a Newport Pagnell cart, painted light browD, picked out red and white lines, by MAN, age 26, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion dark dress, dark clothes. Information to be forwarded to the Metropolitan Police Office, New Scotland Yard, S. W. SUSSEX ( EAST). 48. — East Grinstead ( County). — 2nd or 3rd inst., at West Hoathly— 2 guns ( one pin fire donble- barrelled breech- loader, barrels very lusty, very dark brown fctock, the other central fire, double- barrelled breech- loader, barrels very loose, in very light brown stock. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Berry, Ee-. st Grinsteid. 49.— Brighton ( Borough).— 22nd ult.— 1 gentle- man's silver half- hunter watch, black figures on out- side case, supposed to have initials N. R. V. inside back case, curb pattern silver albert attached, with small silver bottle- shaped pencil at end ; 1 gentle man's double- case silver hunting watch, maker " Des- tois," initials " R. C. " outside front case, inscription inside " In Memory of R. Q. C., February 4th, 1893 a silver albert, link pattern, attached, with Jubilee sixpence at end ; 1 large open- face silver watch, makers " Frodsham and Parkington," initials " H. E." engraved on back case, curb pattern silver albert attached; 1 gent's open- face silver watch. No. 17384, private mark, 218, inside ca3e. Information to Chief Constable Terry, Brighton. 50.— Hastings ( B rough).— 29th ult, by house- breaking— 1 gentleman's silver English lever watch, No. 39860; 1 silver albert, fancy woven links; 1 gold keeper ring; 1 gold dress ring set with rubies; several small articles of silver jewellery. Other property stolen with the above was found to have been pledged at Eastbourne by A MAN, age 35 to 40, height 5 ft. 10 or 11 in., slight build, hair and moustache inclined to be sandy; dress, light suit, black felt hat.
