H". 2. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 3. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions be clearly stated. 5. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property, will be prominently inserted, with detailed particulars, at a cost of lbs. per portrait, and of Is. Gd. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, including the expense of engraring on wood. 6. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and, if the name of such person be required to be inserted, and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. REGULATIONS. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, and are alphabetically arranged by counties. 9- The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases, the officer signing the request for insertion of any announcement, tcill be wholly responsible for any proceedings whic/ i mai/ result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They mutt be clearly written on one side of the paper only, be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, \ ew Scotland Yard, by cheque, crossed " Drummond Co.," Pott Office Order payable at Parliament- st., Postal Order, or in Stamps. 13. Advertisements are accepted for the POLICE GAZETTE through Mr. James Willing, 125, Strand, London, the sole Agent, who will furnish the rates on application. 14. Cities and Boroughs therein, arranged in strict alphabetical order. 2.— Any additional copies of the GAZETTE beyond the number at present supplied will be forwarded on Application in the form set forth in circular of the 7th of November, 1883. 3.— It is particularly requested that any oom- plaints as to the non- delivery or of irregularity in the date of delivery of the POLICE GAZETTE, may be at once notified to the Editor. The following is a copy of the order which governs the circulation, by the Metropolitan Police, of advertisements, or reward bills, for the discovery of property or the detec- tion of crime. The Editor inserts it, in hope of preventing delays which sometimes occur in publishing such notices, on account of their not being in accordance with the regu- lations in force in the Metropolis :— 1. Printed hand- bills, or other advertisements, offering k reward for the discovery of property or the detection of crime, whether printed and issued by the Metropolitan Police, or distributed and exhibited, with the sanction of the Commissioners, on the application of private persons, or of the Police of any County or Borough, must be clearly expressed in relation to the following points— ( o) The amount of the reward. ( 6) The conditions on which it is payable, ( o) The person by whom it will be paid. ( d) That the name and address of the printer appear thereon. 8. No expression must be used in such an advertise- ment, in relation to property stolen, or criminally taken or disposed of, holding out any expectation that the reward will be paid on its return without the offender being brought to trial, or without enquiry. Sort.— There are 177 Stations of the Metropclitin Pcliee Force at which Noticet can be posted. APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT. METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT. 1. — B Division. — Fo- stealing a suit of clothes and a pair of boots - RICHARD MADDOX, a tailor, ago 40, height, 5 fc. 8 in , complexion fresh, hair light brown; dress, black frock coat, black trousers and black felt hat. Is well known at Maid- stone, Morlington, Chatham, and Tunbridge Wells. Absconded 2nd ulto. Warrant issued. J 2. — D Division.— For embezzling £ 5 on 1st ult.— THOMAS EDGAR HALL, age about 30, height 5 ft 5 or 6 in , complexion sallow, hair and small moustache dark, small dark piercing eyes, thin face; dress, dark coat and vest, grey plaid trousers, black felt h it. A native of Putney. Was employed for some years as clerk and porter in a tailoring establishment, and will probably seek similar employment in a pro\ incial town. Warrant issued. 3. — D Division— For stealing £ 15 7s. 6d.— JOHN THOMAS BROUGHTON, alias JOHN DOLMAN, License Holder, Office No. 43689, age 32, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion very fresh, hair brown, eyes grey, slight light moustache, scar on right temple, left foreiinger and right side of head, mole over right breast; dre3S, light drab covert coat, black vest, dark trousers, new brown boots, felt hat. A stableman; native of Melton Mowbray. Is known at Leicester and Hull. Warrant issued. Information to be forwarded to the Metropolitan Police Office, New Scotland Yard, S. W. AYRSHIRE. 4.— Ayr ( County).— For fraudulently obtaining money from various shopkeepers, between December, 1892, and February, 1893, by representing that he was a member of a firm in Dundee, for the supply of rubber endorsement stamps— JOHN DALGETY, an agent or traveller, age 23, height 5 ft. 7 in., com- plexion fresh, hair auburn, small light moustache, full round face, speaks with Scotch accent; dress, when last seen, dark tweed jacket suit, and black felt hat. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable of Ayrshire, Ayr. BEDFORDSHIRE. £ 1 REWARD. 5.— Bedford [ County).— Escaped from Bedford Reformatory— FRANCIS JEFFERIES, age 15, height 5 ft. 2| in., complexion pale, hair light brown, eyes brown; dress, corduroy sleeve vest, brown corduroy trousers, calico shirt, strong nailed boots, round cap with red stripe, clothing marked " Bedford Reformatory." Was convicted at Oxford, 25th October, 1892, and sentenced to 1 months imprisonment and 4 years in a reformatory. His father, a tailor, resides at Blackfriars- road, St. Ebbs, Oxford. THOMAS SMITH, age 16, height 5 ft. 3 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes hazel, crooked finger left hand, boil mark middle of back; dress, corduroy trousers, calico shirt, strong nailed boots, round cap with red strir^ ecn ict at Win- terton, Lincolnshire, 3 and sentenced to 14 days imprisonment and 3 years in a reforma- tory. A native of River Head, Pocklington, Fork- shire. Warrant issued. The above reward will be paid by Mr. J. Jones, Carlton, Bedford, for the apprehension of each of the above. Information to Supt. Quenby, Bedford. BERKSHIRE. 6.— Wokingham ( County).- For staaling, 4th inst., at Bracknell, a small tricycle, painted black, front steering wheel— A YOUTH, age about 14, height about 4 ft., slight build, complexion fair, hair light brown, scars on neck; dress, old grey knicker suit, black stockings, white canvas shoes, dark cloth cap. He was traced to Addlestone, 4th inst., going in the direction of London. Information to Supt. Atkin, Wokingham. CHESHIRE. 7. — Nantwich ( County). — For obtaining 6 pairs of men's lace boots at Crewe, on 9th inst.— A MAN, age 20 to 25, height abont 5 ft. 6 in., complexion dark, thin features; dress, light pepper- and- salt mixture coat, dark trousers, light cap. This man called at a boot shop and asked the assistant to send the boots to an address in Crewe, for the gentleman residing there to choose from. On the way to the address given he intercepted the messenger, and, obtaining possession of the boots, decamped, and has not been heard of since. Information to Supt. Leah, Nantwich. DERBYSHIRE. 8.— Wirksworth ( County). — For stealing a £ 5 note, on 3rd inst.— ARTHUR LOAKES, alias CUTTS, age 35, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., complexion fresh, hair light brown ( turning grey), clean shaved, eyes grey ( one inclined to be weak), Roman nose, upper front teeth project and are slightly decayed, stoops when walking; dress, brown coarse cloth coat and vest, brown cloth trousers ( much worn), lace boots, black hard felt hat. A native of East Hardwick, near Pontefract. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Hollingworth, Wirks * orth. FRIDAY, JUNE 30, 1893. A farm labourer ; native of Fronfrealle, Meiford. Warrant issued. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Crowden, Welshpool. SHROPSHIRE. 29.— Bridgnorth^, ( County).— For stealing at Ironbridge, 9th inst., a square market basket— WILLIAM COPE, alias CASEY, and EVANS, a labourer, age 32, height about 5 ft. 7 in., com- ' plexion sallow, hair and eyes dark, moustache inclined to be sandy, very thin, abscess mark under right armpit; dress, plaid cloth jacket and vest, grey cloth trousers, lace boots, black hard felt hat, all much - worn. Is likely to be found in common lodging houses, or in the vicinity of railway stations, where he may commit larcenies. Has been pre- viously convicted at Walsall and Salop Assizes for stealing portmanteau* from railway stations, and^ on the last occasion, in March, 1889, sentenced to ' 8 months imprisonment in the namo of Evans. Warrant issued. • Information to Supt. Walters, Bridgnorth. SOMERSETSHIRE. 30.— Frome ( County).— For neglecting to main- tain his wife and family— JEREMIAH 110RLER, a coal miner of Coleford, age 31, height 5 ft. 8| in., • complexion fresh, hair and moustache dark, eyes hazel, walks with swinging gait; dress, black coat and vest, light tweed trousers, black bowler hat, worn at back of head. Supposed to be accompanied by Annie Walker, age about 38, height 5 ft. 3 or . 4 in., complexion fair, hair dark, eyes light blue. Warrant issued. 31— Frome ( County).— For obtaining food and lodgings by false pretences, and stealing a gold signet ring, set bloodstone— A man who gave the name of PEKE, or PETE, age 25 to 30, height 5 ft. 2 or 3 in., slight build, complexion, hair, small moustache, and eyes dark; dress, black serge - double- breasted jacket-, small black- and- white p'aid or check trousers. Stated that he belonged to the Ordnance Survey, and was on some special mission. He left Salisbury on the morning of 2ui inst.., - wearing the ring. Infoimation to Supt. Williams, Frome. Stated he was a joiner, and a native of Dunbar, Haddingtonshire. Is supposed to be wanted by the Perthshire Police for housebreaking at Callander Hydropathic, on the Dight of 12th inst, as the most of the property stolen from Callander was disposed of by him in Stirling. Information to Chief Constable Ferguson, Stirling. STAFFORDSHIRE. 32. — Wednesbury ( County). — For man- slaughter, 13th inst,— MARTIN DEVANEY, age 27, height 5 ft. 9 in., stout build, complexion fresh, hair sandy, clean shaved, walks erect; dress, short black coat, moleskin vest and trousers, white muffler, black hard felt hat, lace boots.— JOHN DEVANEY, age 23, height 5 ft 4 or 5 in., com- plexion fresh, hair sandy, clean shaved; dress, short black coat and vest, moleskin trousers, white muf- fler, black hard hat, lace boots. Labourers or puddlers. Natives of Wednesbury. Warrant issued. 33.— Wednesbury ( County).— For stealing a pair of merino socks and £ 10 17s.— A MAN, age about 25, height about 5 ft. 3 in., complexion very dark, hair and slight moustache dark brown, broad shoulders, sore feet; dress, short round slate- color tweed jacket, dark ribbed worsted vest, light specks, slate color trousers, old side spring boots ; may be wearing the stolen sooks. Supposed native of Cheltenham. Information to Supt. Salt, Wednesbury. STIRLINGSHIRE. 34. — Stirling ( Burgh), — For housebreaking between 16th and L7th inst., and stealing a gentle- man's gold lever centre- second stop watch, No. 25216; a gentleman's gold double albert chain, curb pattern ; a lady's gold geneva watch, No. 75619; a lady's long gold guard chain, snake pattern; a pair of gold ear- rings, fuscliia- drop pattern; a pair of gentleman's gold eyeglasses with small silver chain attached, and an opera glass— GEORGE GRANT, alias WILSON, age 26, height 5 ft. 7 in., hair ( mixed with grey), heavy moustache, and eyes dark, prominent burn or scrofula mark on left sido of face; spoke with a Scotch accent; dress, dark brown or blue- check jacket suit, side- spring boots with block fronts, light brown single- peak cap. He frequents public houses and associates with prostitutes. SUSSEX ( EAST). 35.— Eastbourne ( Borough).— For embezzling £ 4 8s. 7d.— HERBERT C. FURBER, a clerk, ase 20 to 22, height about 5 ft. 4 in., complexion dark, hair ( thick and smooth, overhanging forehead) black; dress, dark speckled brown suit and black felt hat. Has worked at Eton Laundry, Shepherd's Bush, and was at one time a member of the South Middlesex Volunteers; sings " Monte Carlo," " The Shopwalko," and coster songs in character; sup- posed known at Chehei. Left Eastbourne, 14th inst., for Victoria. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Plumb, East- bourne. Is accompanied by Maggie Hume, age about 24, medium height, high cheekbones, wear3 a quantity of jewellery. The above reward will be paid by Benjamin Allen, Esq., General Manager, Huddersfield Banking Co., Huddersfield, for the apprehension of Newsome. Warrant issued. Information to Capt. GAISFORD, a traveller in the gas- fittiog trade, age 30, height 5 ft. 10 in., slight build, hair and moustache light, eyes blue, stoop3 slightly when walking, near- sighted but does not wear glasses, gcod- looking and of gentlemanly ap- pearance; dress, when last seen, blue reefer jacket, prey striped trousers, light brown bowler hat. Carried a small leather bag containing brass cocks and other gas- titters' samples. May seek employ- ment in the gas fitting trade. He is a native of London, and a Freemason. His father is a retired gas engineer and resides at Brixton. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Farndalc, Bir- mingham. Sentenced at Worcester, 18th October, 1886, to 7 years penal servitude for larceny. Liberated on second license 2( id January last, which expires 12th October, 1S94. IM 41, Supposed travelling the country with a prostitute named Julia Holder, alias Hinett, age 22, height 5 ft. 3 in., complexion fresh, hair black, eyes hazel. Information to the Chief Constable, Kidder- minster. YORKSHIRE ( WEST RIDING). 38.— Pontefract ( County).— For stealing an English lever silver watch, No. 22037, " J. Carter, Warrington," on works; a silver lever stop- watch, No. 23836, " E. Wise, Manchester," on works, and £ 23 2s. in money— A MAN, age 34, height 5 ft. 10i in., complexion fresh, hair brown, moustache dark brown, eyes grey; dress, black worsted suit, black felt hat, green silk tcckcrchicf, light lace boots. An Irishman. Information to Supt. Whiucup, Court House, Pontefract. 39.— Selby ( County).— For larcepy ( bailee) WILLIAM BARKER ( supposed false), age about 4- 5, height 5 ft. 2 or 3 in., complexion fresh, mous tache ginger; dress, rough dark blue coat and vest, light cloth trousers ( very dirty, and patched behind), lacc boots, dark cloth cap. This man takes lodgings at private houses, statirg ho is attached to the Government Survey Department. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Supposed native of Leeds. He wa3 employed as agent to the Discharged Prisoners' Aid Society. Was formerly band- sergeant in 52nd Regiment and afterwards in the Convict Prison Service, which he left about 13 years ago. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Withers, Bradford. DEVONSHIRE. 44— Exeter ( County).— Committed for trial at next assizes, for forgery, fraud and larceny.— ARTHUR NEWMAN, alias RUSSELL RICH- ARDS, and FITZGERALD, age 35, height 5 ft. 5J in., complexion fresh, hair black, dark moustache, eyes blue, lost second finger both bands, left arm deformed, left knee joint stiff, scar right leg below kuee ; dress, dark reefer coat., - white vest, dark trousers, brown bowler hat, side- spring boots. POTTER, age 49, height 5 ft. in., complexion fresh, hair and eyes grey, cut mark bridge of nose; native of Litcham, Norfolk. Information to Chief Constable Berry, South- ampton. HUNTINGDONSHIRE. 47.— Norman Cross ( County).— Committed for trial at next Quarter Sj8' ions, for housebreaking at Haddon, 7th inst,— CHARLES WILLIAMS, age 26, height 5 ft. 6^ in., slight build, complexion swarthy, hair dark brown, eyes ( small) dark, heart, anchor and flower tattooed right forearm, ship on left; dres9, brown speckled tweed jacket, cardigan vest, blue cloth trousers, light cloth cap. States he is a native of Mailing, Kent, and that he has recently been employed in the merchant service. Found in his possession— a pawnticket for a silver geneva watch, No. 10882, pledged at Goole on 5th April last. Information to Supt. Allen, Norman Cross, Peterborough. Had in his possession a Post Office Savings Bank Book, showing small amounts deposited since 6th March last, at Oxford, Maidenhead, Basingstoke, Southampton, and Poole. He was convicted at Weymouth, 1st ult., of drun- kenness and wilful damage. Information to Head Constable Barnett, Bridg- water. 51.— Bridgwater ( County). — Remanded till 26th inst. for burglary— CHARLES WALKER, a sailor, age 24, height 5 ft. in., complexion florid, hair light brown, eyes blue, " H. West," man and woman holding hands and dancing, female's head, 2 roses, W. D U. S., E. W., ship and rings right arm and fingers, sailor dancing on barrel and playing violin. " R. Tubbey," " C. Buckwood," roses, flags, & c., left arm, 2096 inside left leg below knee; dress, black rib cloth jacket and vest, dirty moleskin trousers, grey woollen shirt with white stripe, black cloth cap, Oxford shoes ; native of Commercial- road, London, E. O. M. under- neath) on left arm, bracelet on wrist; dress, old dark clothes, skull cap, shabby appearance. Refuses to give any account of himself. Supposed previously convicted. SUSSEX ( WEST). 53.— Horsham ( County).— Committed for trial at next Quarter Sessions, 29th inst., for house- breaking— WILLIAM TAYLOR ( supposed false), age 21, height 5 ft. 8 in., lair brown, left eye grey, blind right; dress, grey jacket, old brown stripe trousers, plaid cotton shirt, black hard felt hat, old lace boots A labourer on tramp. States he is a native of Birmingham. — ALBERT JACKSON, age 20, height 5 ft. in., stout build, complexion dark, round features, hair dark brown, eyes hazel; wears serge jacket, dark cap; appearance of a seaman. States he is a labourer and a native of New York. Information to Supt. Denman, Horsham.
