HERTFORDSHIRE. 10.— Hitchin ( County).— For stealing a horse, 2 sets of harness, and a watch— WILLIAM HANS- COMBE, alias WILLIAM CHARLES BAKER, and " LYING GINGER, " age about 35, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion fresh, hair sandy, eyes hazel, scar right groin; usually dresses in dirty clothes, tight- fitting trousers, and hard felt hat. Is well known at Brixton, London, and may be found in the com- pany of low horse dealers. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Reynolds, Hitchin. LANCASHIRE. 11.— Burnley ( County).— For failing to report — Supervisee JOHN WILLIAM WOODS, Office No. 43785, age 27, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes blue ( blind left), burn scar left side belly, scar left groin, anchor inside right wrist. Sentenced at Preston, 6th January, 1892, to 9 months hard labour and 2 years police supervision for larceny. 312520. Information to Supt. C. J. C., cross, and square back of left forearm. Sentenced at Manchester, 4th April, 1890, to 12 months hard labour and 3 years police supervision for larceny. License Holder ALBERT RENSHAW, Office No. 44244, age 43, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion fresh, hair brown ( bald), eyes grey, several scars over right, two between eyes, one right side fore- head, and two between left thumb and forefinger, two moles on throat, one inside right upper arm right armpit, and between shoulderblades. Sen- tenced at Manchester, 24th Octobcr, 1887, to 7 years penal servitude and 7 year3 police supervision for housebreaking. Licensed 14th Jan., 1893. IN 947. NORTHAMPTONSHIRE. 14.— Daventry ( County).— For failing to report — License Holder WILLIAM WATTS, Office No. 42378, age 37, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fresh, hair light brown, eyes grey ( right defective), scars on head, right eyelid, and eyebrow, near left ear, back of right upper arm, each forefinger, 4th left finger, back of right hand, right wrist, palm of left haud, left thumb, 2 left buttock, and 3 top of left foot. Sentenced at Guildford Assizes, 27th July, 1882, to 12 years penal servitude for rape. Licensed 14th January, 1892. 1711. Information to Supt. Botterill, Daventry. SHROPSHIRE. 15. — Church Stretton ( County). — For larceny ( bailee)— GILBERT ED WD. MATTHEWS, late of Bishop's Castle, a watchmaker, « ge 2t>, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion ruddy, rather full face, hair dark brown, eyes brown, supposed clean shaved, slight impediment in his speech, walks erect with short quick steps; dress, brown plaid suit, cloth cap, turn- down collar, lace boots. May seek employment at his trade, or travel as a watch and clock cleaner. Warrant issued. Information to Inspector Lewis, Church Stretton. SOMERSETSHIRE. 16.— Bath ( City).— Fcr obtaining a lady's 9- ct. gold albert chain, and money, by false pretences :— A man, giving the name of M. H. BROWER, age about 20 to 24, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in.; complexion swarthy, hair light, clean shaven, thick lips ; dress, brown tweed suit, grey cap; respectable appearance. His modus operandi is to call upon servants at private houses and offer jewellery for sale or ex- change, which he carries in a black box and repre- sents as genuine, but which turns out to be worthless. Warrant issued. Information to Lt.- Col. Gwyn, Chief Constable, Bath. STAFFORDSHIRE. 17.— Stor. Q( County).— For the defilement of a girl under the age of 13 years, who is pregnant— HY. MOORE, age 24, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion fair, hair light brown, slight light moustache, eyes blue ; dress, old black coat, tweed vest, corduroy trousers, strong lace boots, black single- peak cap, had also with him a black suit of clothes. A farm- waggoner; a native of Yarufield, Staffordshire. Absconded 3rd inst. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Chaplain, Stone. SUFFOLK. 18.— Halesworth ( County). — For obtaining money by false pretences— J. FULCHER, age 25. height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., complexion pale, hair brown, eyes grey, clean shaved, long face, turns his right foot outwards when walking; dress, black coat and vest, light trousers, white shirt and tie, lace boots black hard felt hat. A native of Wymondbam, Norfolk, where he worked for his father who is a whitesmith and bellhanger. Ho has recently been discharged from some prison. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. SURREY. 19.— Reigate ( B^ rouqh).— For deserting his wife and family — GEORGE HENRY CASEY, age 35, height 5 ft., complexion dark, hair ( parted in centre) black, moustache dark brown, several tattoo marks right arm; dress, drab jacket and vest, striped tweed trousers, and brown felt hat. Was several years Band- Sergeant in the Royal Fusilier Regiment, at Hounslow, ana is now a pensioner. May be found on the main road between Stafford and Liverpool ( via Crewe). Warrant issued. SUSSEX ( EAST). 20.— Hastings ( Borough).— For deserting his infant daughter, whereby she has become chargeable to the Hastings Union— JOHN DALE, age30, height 5 ft. 10 or 11 in., complexion f « ir, hair light brown, small side whiskers, moustache light; dressed as a stableman. May be found at the Horse Repository, St. Martin's Laue, London. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Glenister, Hastings. WESTMORELAND. 21.— Kendal ( Borough).— For obtaining by false pretences, 25th ult., a gentleman's new silver English ' ever watch, No. 9158, full plate, " J. Winder, Kendal," on bar ; a gentleman's silver albert guard, dog- chain pat. fern, which ha?, a3 a pendant, a medal with round shield on one side, aud plain ou reverse side— License Holder DANIEL O'NEILL, alias BARTON, NEALE, SCOTT, NUTTLEY, BLAIR KEITH, MERCERON, ROSS, PHILIPP, and McNEILL, Office No. 44634, age 39, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion fresh, hair brown ( turning grey), eyes hazel, dark moustache and whiskers ; a baker; native of Liverpool; scar on bridge of nose, right thumb, lst and 3rd right fingers, left hip, left foot, and left shoulder- blade, boil scars on belly and back, lost second right Dnger, large stain under left nipple, mole on left hift and shoulder- blade, varicose veins, left leg. Sentenced at Preston, 3rd July, 1889, to 5 years penal servitude, and 5 years police super- vision for fraud. Licensed 19th April, 1893, J P 328. Warraut issued. WILTSHIRE. 22— Marlborough ( County).— For obtaining food and lodgings by false pretences, on 26th ult.— MARY DAYIS, age 50, height about 5 ft. 1 or 2 in., complexion sallow, hair dark ( turning grey), eyes ( rather weak) brown; dress, black dress, black bonnet trimmed with black feather and ribbon, alpaca dust cloak with brown stripes, may be wear- ing a short black mantle under, white cuffs, carried an umbrella. She stated she was employed as a cook to a localsurgeon; and that her boxes which con- tained her money and a cheque were at the railway station ( false), by which statements she obtained 5s. WORCESTERSHIRE. 23.— Pershore ( County).— For housebreaking at Besford, on 27th ult.— A MAN, age about 21, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion sallow, hair brown, clean shaved, tattoo marks on back of one hand ( supposed right) ; dress, blue cloth sailor suit, flat top cap with peak similar to those worn by midshipmen, cream- coloured silk neckerchief, light boots. Information to Supt. Cope, Pershore. YORKSHIRE ( EAST RIDING). 24.— Beverley ( Borough).— For stealing a drab covert or dust coat, and also for obtaining food, lodgings, & c., by false pretauces— A MAN, who gave the names of " GREEN," " MORLEY," & c., age about 30, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., rather stout build, complexion fresh, full face, moustache light; dress, dark suit, white collar turned down at corners, white tie, black felt hat, may wear the stolen over- coat. Carried a brown paper parcel. This man calls at good hotels and asks for letters which he says he expected; states he is a commercial traveller, and after obtaining food, & c., absconds without paying his account. Warrant issued. YORKSHIRE ( WEST RIDING). 25.— Leeds ( County).— For forgery on the Leeds and Yorkshire Penny Branch Bank, at Rawdon, to a large amount— THOMAS HUSTLER, a clerk, age 34, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion fresh, hair and eyes brown ; dress, dark mixture slack back coat, trousers and vest, black tie, hard felt hat. Stansfield, County Buildings, Leeds. 26. — Halifax ( Borough). — For embezzling £ 38 16s.— LEY LAND DUNCAN, age about 45, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., thin dark hair, long heavy black moustache ; may be wearing a pair of dark spectacles ; generally wears short dark overcoat and brown billycock hat. Gentlemanly appearance. Fond of the company of loose women. A wine and spirit merchant's traveller. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Pole, Halifax. PERSONS IN CUSTODY. CAMBRIDGESHIRE. 27. — Bottisham ( County). — Committed for trial at the next Cambridge Quarter Sessions for housebreaking — WILLIAM WRIGHT, a tramp, age 30, height 5 ft. in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes grey, oval face, long scar on left cheek, scar on right ribs and back of head, 3 scars centre of loins. Information to Inspector Redhouse, Bottisham. FRIDAY, APRIL 21, 1893. THE POLICE GAZETTE. 7 CUMBERLAND. 28.— Whitehaven ( County). — Remanded till 15th inst., for larceny and obtaining money, food, and lodgings by false pretences — HENRY HARRISON, alias JACKSON, ALLINSON, and WILSON, age 38, height 5 ft. 5 in., stout build, complexion swarthy, full face, high forehead, hair dark brown, moustache, and small side whiskers, and eyes brown, holds bis head forward, mole back of left shoulder, scars inside front left leg, lost 4 upper front teeth; dross, blue serge suit, 6triped woollen shirt, blue cloth cap with glazed peak, patent leather spring- sido boots. He represented himself a3 a ship's captain and as ' an agent for a telephone company. He takes lodgings for himself and three others, stating he is going to lay new telephone wires in the neighbour- hood. Supposed to have been previously convicted. Information to Supt. DURHAM. 29.— Durham ( City).— Remanded till 15th inst., for uttering counterfeit coin on 7th inst.— JOHN WILSON ( supposed false), age 64, height 5 ft. 4i in., complexion sallow, hair grey, eyes grey, scar on forehead above right eye, ruptured and wears a truss, lame left leg and walks with a stick ; dress, blue reefer jacket, blue sleeve waistcoat with dirty brown check vest underneath, brown tweed trousers, patched on right knee, blne- and- white check cotton shirt, black- and- white check scarf, strong lace boots, black felt hat. States he has been tramping about the country during the past 5 years, and that he was previously employed as a tailor at Burrach- " Street, Belfast. Information to Chief Constable Smith, Durham. GLAMORGANSHIRE. 30.— Card iff ( Borough).— Remanded for robbery with violence, and housebreaking — THOMAS WREN, alias POWER, age 23, height 5 ft. 5£ in. without shoes, muscular build, complexion fresh, oval face, hair light brown, small light moustache, thick lips ( split in centre of lower), good teeth, cut scar centre of forehead, at upper part of nose, also over left eye, long scar left cheek near ear, scar right elbow, inside right arm, on right hip, inside and outside right knee, outside right thigh and left shin, and back of left hand, and 2 scars on breast, enlarged tee- joint left foot. Information to Head Constable McKenzie, Cardiff. HEREFORDSHIRE. 31.— Bromyard ( County).— Remanded till 15th inst., for an attempted indecent assault on a girl, age 7.— CHARLES PEET, age 30, height 5 ft. 9i in., complexion swarthy, hair, whiskers and moustache dark brown, tattood on chest, arms and legs, marine captain on back of right hand, man on left hand; dress, dark mookey jacket, dirty mole- skin trousers, patched at knees, moleskin vest and cardigan vest over, old light boots. Has been in the Marines. Appears well acquainted with prison discipline. Supposed wanted elsewhere. Information to Snpt. Lewis, Bromyard. 32.— RoSS ( County). — Committed for trial at the Quarter Sessions, on 26th prox., for house- breaking— THOMAS EVANS, age 20, height 5 ft. 3 in., complexion dark sallow, hair dark, eyes brown, cut mark on fourth finger of right hand, and on chin; dress, dark blue jacket with three seams, dark plaid vest, dark blue serge trousers, dark blue cap with peak, dark muffler, grey flanelette shirt, light lace boots. A ship's fireman; native of 41, Milicent- street, Cardiff. Information to Supt. Cope, Ross. MONMOUTHSHIRE. 33.— Newport ( Bmough).— Remanded till loth inst. for stealing a watch from a ship— HENRY VICTOR EARLE, a seaman or engineer's steward, age 19, height 5 ft. 10£ in., complexion fair, hair brown and curly, eye3 grey, stammers when speak- ing, large vaccination marks both arms, has long hands and fingers. States that he was born at Aldershot, and that his father, who is dead, resided at 28, Lyson's Road, Aldershot, when he left the Army, about 4 or 5 years ago. Information to Head Constable Sinclair, Newport. NORTHAMPTONSHIRE. 34.— Northampton ( Borough).— Sentenced to 6 weeks imprisonment, on 26th ult., for stealing money from a beer- house, and boots from a railway station — HARRY RIG BY, age 37, height 5 ft. in., stout build, complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes hazel. A theatrical agent; native of Elstree, Essex. 35.— Northampton ( Borough).— Sentenced to 6 weeks imprisonment, on 24th ult., for obtaining charitable contributions by false pretences — FREDERICK JASPER, a grocer's assistant, age 32, height 5 ft. 3^ in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes grey. May be wanted for similar offences elsewhere. Information to Chief Constable Mardlin, North- ampton. SHROPSHIRE. 36.— Ludlow ( County).— Sentenced to2 months imprisonment, for attempting to pick pockets, at Tenbury Races, 4th inst. — HARRY THOMAS, age 30, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion swarthy, hair dark brown, moustache brown, eyes hazel, two cut marks right eyebrow ; dress, dark and brown small plaid cloth suit, white- and- brown stripe cotton shirt, blue neckerchief with small white spots, black hard felt hat, strong lice boots. States he is a carpenter, and that his parents reside at 35, Allcross- street, Birmingham. Supposed wanted for other offences. Information to Supt. Hayward, Ludlow. 37.— Shrewsbury ( County).— Remanded for larceny ( shop)— EDWIN BROWN ( supposed false), age 33, height 5 ft. 4^ in., complexion sallow, hair dark brown ( turning grey), small brown moustache, eyes brown, blotchy face as if from heavy drinking, abscess murk left jaw, dot tattooed back of left forearm, scar centre of left shin and lower part of right shin; dress, brown cloth double- breasted coat, black vest, dark grey trousers, two blue- and- white plaid cotton shirts, white front, lace boots, black hard felt hat States he is a compositor, and native of Walworth, Surrey, and that he left there about a month since in search of work. Had in his possession 6 pawntickets relating to coat and vest, compositor's stick, portmanteau, shears, trousers and shirt, and a coat pledged in the Metropolitan Police District, in names of " John Smith," " A. Brown," " Edward Bowdler," " C. Brown," " John Allen," and " G. Brown;" also an indenture of apprenticeship of Charles Emmanuel Cluse, son of George Robert Cluse, 23, Doctor- street, Walworth, compositor, to Matthew Lownds, Wheelwright, of London, dated 29th April, 1873. Information to Supt. Edge, Shrewsbury. SUFFOLK. 38.— Ipswich ( Borough).— Committed for trial at the next assizes for breaking and entering a church, and stealing alms— THOMAS TAYLOR, age 22, height 5 ft. 2 in., weight about 9 stone, complexion fair, hair light brown, eyes dark blue, oval face, boil scar under chin, blue dot right wrist, female bust behind a pot of flowers tattooed right forearm, mole top of right groin and inside right thigh; dress, black cloth coat with white jacket under, brown corduroy trousers, cloth cap. States he is a native of London. Appears to be a vagrant and tramp. Information to Lieut.- Col. Russell, Chief Constable, Ipswich. SUSSEX ( EAST). 39.— Hailsham ( County). — Sentenced to one month's imprisonment, on 1st inst., for larceny ( shop), at Heathfield, on 10th ult. ( see Case No. 30, 21st ult) — WALTER SANDS, age 35, height 5 ft. 7£ in., complexion freckled, hair brown, whiskers and moustache ginger, eyes brown; dress, light tweed jacket and cap with peak, cord trousers and vest, short brown leather lpggin? s; a carpenter, native of Ewhurst, Sussex— GEORGE MILES, age 61 ( looks younger), height 5 tt. in., complexion and hair dark, bald on top of head, whiskers and moustache dark, shaved on chin, eyes blue, crown tattooed on left wrist; dress, light tweed jacket and vest, dark cord trousers, black hard felt hat; a native of Tilford, Surrey. Supposed to be a pensioner from the 1st Battalion Leicestershire Regt. Information to Supt. Renville, Hailsham. age- 33, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion fair, hair brown, pronunciation defective, unable to sound " tb," says " firty " for thirty and " ovvera " for others ; dressed respectably, wears a long invernes3 coat. Is said to be a native of Brighton. Was in the company of Albert Carter, Case No. 35, 28th ult. On 22nd ult. he booked to Devizes but went on to Reading. Information to Supt. White, Trowbridge. WORCESTERSHIRE. 41.— Oldbury ( County).— Committed for trial at the ensuing Quarter Sessions for larceny ( lodger), and obtaining food, & c., by false pretences— ELIZA HEELEY, age 67, height 5 ft. 3£ in., complexion fresh, hair grey ; dress, black dolman trimmed with black lace, black dress and bonnet.— ELIZABETH ROGERS, alias ELIZA ADEY, age 30, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion fresh; dress, brown dolman, black dress, and dark hat. They represented them- selves as mother and daughter, and, if near a theatre, stated they were engaged there as dressers. After staying at their lodgings about a week they absconded, taking with them anything they could carry. Information to Supt. Speke, Oldbury. PROPERTY STOLEN. METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT. £ 200 REWARD. 42.— s Division.— 16th ult.— 1 diamond cross; 1 small diamond brooch, with grey hair in front; 1 pair of diamond earrings; 1 pearl necklace, with diamond clasp; 1 circular or flexible diamond bracelet ( very valuable) ; 1 circular pearl bracelet; 2 flexible circular gold bracelets; 1 enamel cross, with passion flower thereon ; 1 opal and gold neck- lace; 1 lapis- lazuli cross; I opal and diamond broocb, with earrings to match; 1 gold bracelet; 1 enamel and diamond ring; 1 sapphire and diamond ring ; 1 pair of flat circular earrings set with small diamonds, enamel dove in centre; 1 gold broocb, medium size, large diamond in centre, black enamelled earrings to match; 1 lady's gold half- hoop pearl ring; 1 lady's gold half- hoop diamond ring ; 3 diamond stars about the size of half- a- crown; and 3 diamond buttons— all very fine quality. The above reward will be paid by Henry H. Gibbs, Esq., St. Dunstan's, Regent's- park, to any person giving such information as shall lead to the apprehension and conviction of the thief or thieves, and the recovery of the property, or in proportion to the amount recovered. A reward of £ 100 will be paid for such information as shall lead to the arrest and conviction of the thief or thieves, although none of the property be recovered. L." Information to Supt. Taylor, Maidenhead. 44.— Windsor ( Borough).— At Hawthorn Hill Rices— A grey pearl pin, gold stem, set with one small diamond at top of stem where pearl is fixed. GLAMORGANSHIRE. 45.— Swansea ( Borough).— 5th inst.— A gentle- man's gold lever watch, No. 15151, white dial ( cracked), back of case smooth through wear. GLOUCESTERSHIRE. 46.— Gloucester ( County).— 3rd inst.— 1 hand saw ; 2 tenon saws ; 2 1- in. chisels ; 1 f- in. do.; 1 J- in. do.; 2 fourfold 2- ft. rules ; 1 mallet; 1 pair pincers ; 1 bevel; 1 9- iti. square ; 1 pair dividers ; 2 hammers; 1 screw- driver, all marked " W. D. Gorton," or " G. H. Draper." Information to Deputy Chief Constable Philpott, Gloucester. LEICESTERSHIRE. 82. — Leicester ( Borough). — For obtaining money by false pretences, on 27th ulto.— A man, who gave the name of JOHN DUGGAN, age about 35, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion dark, pock- pitted, hair ( turning grey) and moustache dark ; dress, light [ cloth suit, black overcoat with velvet collar, black soft felt hat ( boit shaped). This man called at the School Board Office and obtained the addresses of several people who received lodgers. He then called upon them stating that he was desirous of obtaining lodgings for a young gentleman named Foster, the son of a doctor in London, who was coming to the town to study law, and preferred a draft, duly stamped, for two guineas, drawn by A. R. Foster, in favour of E. Simpson, in payment of a week's board and lodgings in advance.
