All announcements for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and aU communications upon them thouLd be addressed to THE EDITOB OP THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YABD, LONDON, S. W. & Particulars concerning personswhose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 8. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. V. In all cases where a reward is offered the name and address of some person responsible Jo. the payment must be given, and the exact conditions be clearly stated. fi. Portrait* of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property, will he promi- ently inserted, with detailed particulars, at a cost of 15 » . per portrait, and of 7s. 6d. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, including the expense of engraving on wood. 8. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and, if the name of such person be required to be inserted, and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed hi/ the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. T. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. REQ- TTX.- A- TIOISrS- 8. Announcements of all persons to be i^ rehended or of stolen property bear a number, a,. d ora , alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted t' » the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases, the officer signing the request for insertion of any announcement, will be wholly responsible for any proceedings whi; n may resu'tfrom such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forjiarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday m rning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only, be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office. Cities and Boroughs therein, arranged in strict alphabetical order. 2.— Any additional copies of the GAZETTE beyond the number at present supplied will be forwarded on application in the form set forth in circular of the 7th of November, 1883. 3.— It is particularly requested that any com- plaints as to the non- delivery or of irregularity in the date of delivery of the POLICE GAZETTE, may be at onoe notified to the Editor. The following is a copy of the order which governs the circulation, by the Metropolitan Police, of advertisements, or reward bills, for the discovery of property or the detec- tion of crime. The Editor inserts it, in hope of preventing delays which sometimes occur in publishing such notices, on aooount of their not being in accordance with the regu- lations in force in the Metropolis :— 1. Printed hand- bills, or other advertisements, offering a reward for the discovery of property or the detection of crime, whether printed and issued by the Metropolitan Police, or distributed and exhibited, with the sanction of the Commissioners, on the application of private persons, or of the Police of any County or Borough, must be clearly expressed in relation to the following points— ( a) The amount of the reward. ( b) The conditions on which it is payable. ( e) The person by whom it will be paid. ( J) That the name and address of the printer appear thereon. 1 No expression must be used in nuch an advertise- ment, in relation to property stolen, or criminally taken or disposed of, holding out any expectation that the reward will be paid on its return without the offender being brought to trial, or without enquiry. NOTI.— There are 177 Station of the Metropolitan Mi* Force at which Notice* can be posted. METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT. 1. — A Division. — For embezzling £ 400 — PATRICK GEORGE WASHBOURNE, age 26, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fair, hair light, eyes blue ; dressed generally in dark coat and vest, light trousers, felt hat. A native of Surrey. Was lately employed as clerk at the Hotel Windsor, Victoria- street, Westminster. Warrant issued. 2.— K Division.— For obtaining, on 8th ult., by means of a forged cheque on the London aDd County Bank, Braintree Branch, Essex, purporting to be drawn by T. Moody in favour of J. Harriss; a Referee diamond- frame bicycle, cushion tyres,{ back tyre worn, direct spokes, round rubber, plain pedals, Humber chain, drop- handle bars, solid top, L pin, no mud guards, plunger brake; and 12s. cash— A MAN, age 35, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion fresh, hair very light, eyes blue, appearance of a brick- layer's labourer; dress, dark red small check suit, black hard felt hat. Warrant issued. 3. — K Division.— For stealing £ 4 on 20th ult — BERNARD BOWEN, age 35, height 5 ft. 6 in. well- built, complexion sallow, hair light brown, moustache light; plausible manners; respectable appearance; dress, light brown check suit, black hard felt hat. Supposed native of Tewkesbury. Is accompanied by bis son " Jackie," age 13, fair complexion; dressed in black- and- white check knicker suit, who rides a safety bicycle. This man takes lodgingsat a respectable boarding" house; advertises in some leading daily paper for lads as apprentices or assistant stewards on board ship ; obtains money from applicants under the pretence of buying their outfits, or for having secured them berths; and then absconds. Warrant issued. Information to be forwarded to the Metropolitan Police Office, New Scotland Yard, S. W. BERKSHIRE. 4. — Hungerford ( County). — For obtaining food and money by false pretences on 27th ult. NELLIE DAVIS, age about 50, height 5 ft. 1 or 2 in., complexion fresh, hair brown ( turning grey), eyes ( rather weak) brown, lost nearly all teeth; dress, black dress, black bonnet with black feather round it, black alpaca dust coat with stripes in it. Stated she had just left the service of a doctor at Marlborough, and was goiug into another situation ( false), and wanted money to pay for her boxes which were coming by goods train. Warrant issued. Information to Inspector Molslier. Hutigerford. 5.— Reading ( Be/ rough).— For housebreaking, 30th ult., and stealing a small gold locket chased with flowers, a lady's photo, and piece of hair inside, a small piece of gold chain attached— TWO MEN : ( lst), age about 25, height about 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, slight mous- tache ; dress, black jacket and vest, striped trousers, black hard felt hat with low crown and broad brim, ( 2ud) age about 22, height 5 ft. 3 in., complexion fresh, hair light brown, inclined to Bandy, clean shaved, cast in right eye; dress, grey suit, black hard felt hat with low crown and broad brim. Information to Head Constable Tewsley, Reading. ABERDEENSHIRE. 6. — Aberdeen ( City). — Portrait and de- r iption of JAMES WILSON, whose apprehension is sought for embezzling £ 306— Age 48 to 50, height 5 ft. 10 or 11 in., hair dark, whiskers and moustache dark, mixed with grey ( may now be shaved), full face; has large flat feet; dress, when last seen, dark coat and vest, grey trousers, dark brown overcoat, rough grey ulster, and low- crowned hard felt hat. A mill manager and grain merchant; native of Aberdeenshire. Absconded 3rd inst. May endeavour to leave the country. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Wyness, Aberdeen^ CHESHIRE. 7. — Stockport ( County). — For stealing a silver English lever watch, No. 3794, at Cheadle, Hulme, on 27th ult.— A MAN, age about 30, height about 5 ft. 8 in., had the appearance of a farm labourer or navvy; dress, black round jacket with three buttons on each side behind, cord trousers, much worn, slit inside right leg, narrow- toed clogs, black hard felt hat. GLAMORGANSHIRE. 8. — Cardiff ( Borough). — For stealing, 28tli nit.— a grey tweed suit, a silver watch and chain, maker " Camerer & Kuss, London," " Made in Switzerland" on inside case; a shirt, and £ 2 7s. cash — JOHN BLAKE, a shoeblack, age 18, height 5 ft. 3 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes hazel, short sighted, stoops when walking, turns his toes out, and has a shuffling gait; supposed dressed in stolen clothes, a black hard felt hat, lace boots. Has been in Feltham Industrial School. Is supposed to be making his way to London. Warrant issued. Information to Head Constable McKenzie, Cardiff. GLOUCESTERSHIRE. 9.— Fishponds ( County).— For stealing £ 55 — EDWARD MAY, age 27, height 5 ft. 2 in., com- plexion fresh, hair light brown, slight light mous- tache, eyes supposed blue, scar on right hand and right forearm; dress, old brown plaid suit, black bowler hat, red and black scarf, blue check shirt. A spelter worker; native of St. George, Bristol. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Matthews, Fishponds. HAMPSHIRE. 10.— Winchester ( City). — For failing to re- port — License Holder JAMES THOMAS, alias JAMES TAPP, Office No. 44682, age 31, height 5 ft. 5j in., complexion dark, hair dark brown ( dark bushy whiskers), eyes brown, heart, spear and cross right forearm, cross, bottle, 1862 ( in ring), pipe, jug and glass, and SONG. JIM left forearm ; dress, dark tweed suit and hard felt hat. Sentenced at Winchester, 5th April, 1887, to 7 years penal servitude for housebreaking. Licensed 19tli ult. Previously convicted at Clerkenwell and Central Criminal Court. N 174. Information to Supt. Felton, Winchester. KENT. 11.— Dartford ( County}.— For failing to report — License Holder JOHN BOAKES, Office No. 42875, age 29, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion fresh, hair light brown, eyes blue, scar right thigh, mole centre of back; dress, cord trousers and vest ( recently washed), blue guernsey underneath, black pilot cloth jacket, close fitting cap, with ear flaps tied on top, heavy nailed boots. Sentenced at Maidstone, 11th July, 1883, to 5 years penal servitude, for office- breaking. Licensed 11th May, 1892. O 269. Information to Supt. Webster, Dartford. 12.— Dover ( Borough).— For neglecting to main- tain his family— MICHAEL FITZGERALD, age 27, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fair, hair brown, eyes ( rather weak) blue, two spots left arm, burn mark left knee ; generally dresses in dark or black clothes. A native of Dover. Is employed as a stoker on board a steamer which sails from London. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Sanders, Dover. NORTHUMBERLAND. 13.— Newcastle- On- Tyne ( City). — Licence Holder SARAH ORD, Office No. 43055, Case No. 27, 29th July, 1892, not now wanted. OXFORDSHIRE. 14.— Oxford ( County).— For stealing at Wol- vercote, 25th ult.— A gold ring with four different persons' hair ( 3 daik brown, one grey) under glass in centre ; £ 4 gold ; and £ 7 or £ 8 silver— LEWIS RICHARDS, alias EDGAR BRAND, age 25, height 5 ft. 2 or 3 in., complexion sallow, hair and moustache very dark, eyes dark blue; dress, dark blue jacket with blue and white stripe, white flannel trousers, grey cap, belt to match jacket, brown shoes and socks. A native of Ipswich. This man calls at public- house3, takes two rooms stating that he has come into the country for the benefit of his health, and after a day or two leaves without paying for his food and lodgings. Is supposed to be wanted for similar offences at Reading and Windsor, and to have been convicted at Bedford, and discharged from prison in October last. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, County Police Office, Oxford. £ 5 REWARD. 15.— Oxford ( City).— For stealing, 25th ult., from Trinity and Magdalen Colleges— A gold open- face watch, No. 20729, seconds- hand missing; a silver keyless geneva watch, No. 507345 ; a massive silver chain, with seal one side green, the other pink, Trinity College crest engraved thereon, attached; a gold albert chain; an opal breast pin, set in gold, Marlborough College arms engraved thereon, and " Marlborough College " round outside ; a gold ring set with large red stone ; a gold stud, set with pearls, horse- shoe pattern ( unscrews) ; a silver snuff- box, view of church and spire, and greyhound ranning after hare, engraved on lid; a silver snuff box in shape of an egg; and a silver snuff- box, square pattern— A MAN, age about 27, height 5 feet 7 or 8 in., complexion dark, moustache light, gentlemanly appearance; supposed dressed in dark blue serge suit, white straw hat with black band. The above reward will be paid by the Bursar of Trinity College to any person giving such informa- tion as will lead to the apprehension and conviction of the thief and recovery of any portion of the property. SOMERSETSHIRE. 16.— Bath ( City).— For obtaining a lady's watch by means of a trick— A woman, who gave the name of MARY DAVISON, of Warminster, age about 50, height 5 ft. 1 or 2 in., hair turning grey, rather weak brown eyes, has scarcely any teeth ; dress, black mantle trimmed with fur, black dress, black bonnet trimmed with black ribbon. This woman calls upon small working jewellers, stating she has come for a watch which was left for repairs, thereby inducing the person in charge of the shop to part with the property. She is also wanted at Reading and Marlborough for similar offences. Information to Lieut.- Col. Gwyn, Chief Constable, Bath. SUFFOLK. 17. — Halesworth ( County). — For obtaining money by false pretences— J. FULCHER, age 25, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., complexion pale, hair brown, eyes grey, clean shaved, loDg face, turns his right foot outwards when walking; dress, black coat and vest, light trousers, white shirt and tie, lace boots, black hard felt hat. A native of Wymondham, Norfolk, where he worked for his father who is a whitesmith and bellhanger. He has recently been discharged from some prison. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Andrews, Halesworth. SUSSEX ( EAST). 38.— Hastings ( Borough).— For deserting his infant daughter, whereby she ba3 become chargeable to the Hastings Union— JOHN DALE, age 30, height 5 ft. 10 or 11 in., complexion fair, hair light brown, small side whiskers, moustache light; dressed as a stableman. May be found at the Horse Repository, St. Martin's Lane, London. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Glenister, Hastings. WESTMORELAND. 19.— Kendal ( County).— For stealing from an hotel at Kirkby, on 13th or 14th ult.— A chamois leather purse, clasp on top, containing £ 1 10s. gold; an old - fashioned plnsh purse, fastens with gold ring, containing a jubilee half - sovereign, And a jubilee sixpence; a long silver neck- guard, small links; and a lady's gold neck- chain, oval- shaped gold locket, monogram " H. T. K." thereon, containing photos of two boys, attached— A MAN, age 34, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion fair, hair light brown, whiskers and moustache, eyes brown ; dress, blue or black jacket, grey tweed knickerbockers, white necktie and collar, grey- and- white striped tweed cap, black stockings, lacc boots. Stated he was a doctor in a London hospital. Information to Supt. Shields, Kendal. 20.— Kendal ( Borough).— For obtaining by false pretences, on 25th ult., a gentleman's new silver English lever watch, No. 9158, full platen " J. Winder, Kendal" on bar; a gentleman's silver albert guard, dog- chain pattern, medal with round shield on one side, and plain on the other, attached — A MAN, age 30 to 35, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., well built, complexion and moustache dark, short whiskers all round face, hair ( slightly bushy at sides) wavy, full face, second finger right hand has been amputated between first and second joints, rough hands; dress, dark check morning coat, lighter trousers, light cap with peak. Carried a stick with silver knob. Has with him a dark over- coat, a white silk muffler, and a white straw hat with bine and white striped ribbon round. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Talbot, Kendal. WILTSHIRE. 21— Marlborough ( County).— For obtaining food and lodgings by false pretences, on 26th ult. — MARY DAYIS, age 50, height about 5 ft. 1 or 2 in., complexion sallow, hair dark ( turning grey), eyes ( rather weak) brown; dress, black dress, black bonnet trimmed with black feather and ribbon, alpaca dust cloak with brown stripes, may be wear- ing a short black mantle under, white cuffs, carried an umbrella. She stated she was employed as a cook to a local surgeon; and that her boxes which con- tained her money and a cheque were at the railway station ( false), by which statements she obtained 5s. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Pierce, Marlborough. WORCESTERSHIRE. 22.— Pershore ( County).— For housebreaking at Besford, on 27th ult.— A MAN, age about 21, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion sallow, hair brown, clean shaved, tattoo marks cn back of one hand ( supposed right) ; dress, blue cloth sailor suit, flat top cap with peak similar to those worn by midshipmen, cream- coloured silk neckerchief, light boots. Information to Supt. Cope, Pershore. YORKSHIRE ( WEST RIDING). 23.— Leeds ( City).— Portrait and description of SIDNEY PHILIP POUND, whose apprehension is sought for obtaining the sum of £ 3,000 by means of forged cheques— Age 32 ( looks younger), height about 5 feet, complexion rather sallow, hair dark, clean shaved, longish prominent nose, stylishly dressed, wearing gaiters, large collar and cuffs. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Leeds. PERSONS IN CUSTODY. CAMBRIDGESHIRE. 24. — Bottisham ( County). — Committed for trial at the next Cambridge Quarter Sessions for housebreaking — WILLIAM WRIGHT, a tramp, age 30, height 5 ft. 5^ in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes grey, oval face, long scar on left cheek, scar on right ribs and back of head, 3 scars centre of loins. Information to Inspector Redhonse, Bottisham. CUMBERLAND. 25.— Penrith ( County). — Remanded till 9th inst., for larceny from stables — WILLIAM BARLOW, age 33, height 5 ft. 4| in., stoutish build, complexion fresh, hair and moustache red, eyes blue, anchor tattooed on inside right forearm, FRIDAY, APRIL 21, 1893. THE POLICE GAZETTE. 7 dot inside left forearm, mark across left wrist, birth mark right of forehead ; dress, brown check jacket, corduroy vest, and pilot sleeved waistcoat with flaps on pockets, broad cord trousers, white scarf, fastened with a brass finger ring, round white flannel hat, old side- spring boots. A bricklayer or pedlar; native of Cambridge. Belongs to the Westmore- land Militia. His wife resides at Millom- road, Millom, Cumberland. — THOMAS WILLIAM BENNETT, alias SMITH, age 34, height 5 ft. 2 or 3 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, moustache red, eyes grey, T. tattooed on left forearm; dress, grey- and- brown striped tweed jacket, brown check vest, old corduroy trousers with patch on right knee, light check cap, single peak, ribbon at front, strong lace boots. A labourer; native of Thorne, near Goole, Yorkshire. They appear to be travelling thieves, and have been through Cumberland, Westmoreland, and South of Scotland, during the last three months. Supposed to have been previously convicted and " wanted elsewhere. Information to Supt. Russell, Penrith. 26.— Wigton ( County).— Committed for trial at the next Quarter Sessions, for housebreaking, on 12th ult.— JAMES GILLAN, age 43, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion swarthy, hair dark brown, whiskers and moustache mixed with grey, scar on thumb and little finger right hand, nail on third finger deformed, long scar back of right forearm, scar back of left hand, on each knee and shin, and calf of right leg, scars on forehead, top of head, and back of neck; dress, blue serge jacket, grey tweed trousers with black stripe, grey striped shirt, white linen collar, blue cloth cap with glazed peak and strap round front, carried a grey waterproof overcoat with brown lining. A sailor; native of Cork. Has been convicted of larceny at Carlisle, and is supposed to have been convicted elsewhere. Information to Supt. Hodgson, Wigton. HEREFORDSHIRE. 27.— RoSS ( County). — Committed for trial at the Quarter Sessions, on 26th prox., for house- breaking— THOMAS EVANS, age 20, height 5 ft. 3 in., complexion dark sallow, hair dark, eyes brown, cut mark on fourth finger of right hand, and on chin; dress, dark blue jacket with- three seams, dark plaid vest, dark blue serge trousers, dark blue cap - with peak, dark muffler, grey flanelette shirt, light lace boots. A ship's fireman; native of 41, Milicent- street, Cardiff. Information to Supt. Cope, Ross. HERTFORDSHIRE. 28.— Ware ( County).— Remanded till 10th inst. for obtaining money by false pretences— WILLIAM GARDINER, alias WILLIAM YOUNG, age 40, height 5 ft. in., complexion fresh, hair, side whiskers and moustache brown, eyes grey, birth- mark under right breast; dress, long black frock coat, black morning coat ( much worn), grey check vest, a pair of policeman's fine cloth trousers ( much worn), painter's white apron, lace boots, blue cloth cap with peak and plaited cord in front. A native of Esher or Weybridge. Is believed to be known at Croydon, Stoke Newington, Upper Tooting and Epsom. Information to Captain Wymer, Supt., Ware. KENT. 29.— Maidstone ( Borough). — Committed for trial at the next Assizes at Maidstone, for burglary— JOHN BOBERTS, private, Royal West Kent Regi- ment, age 19, height 5 ft. 5f in., complexion fresh, hair light brown, eyes grey, oval face, two scars back of head and back cf neck, woman's head and cross tattooed lefc forearm, nine blue marks and bracelet left forearm, rings on 2nd and 4th fingers left hand, cross flags and crown right forearm, compass outside right forearm, H. W. A. O. inside calf of left leg, blue dot over It knee, F. D. inside right calf. A native of Bobbing, Kent. Information to Head Constable Daltoa, Maidstone. LINCOLNSHIRE. 30. — Grantham ( Borough). — Sentenced to 14 days imprisonment on 1st inst., for larceny, from an hotel — JOHN SOBOT, alias Dr. HURST, REEMA, JOSEPH JACKSON, and JOHN SMITH, age 58, height 5 ft. 3 in., complexion fresh, hair grey, bald on top of head, no whiskers or moustache, eyes light brown, thin lips, large nose, broad chest, birthmark and small lump on crown of head, right index finger deformed, left second finger amputated at first joint; dress, brown overcoat, dark suit, black hard billycock hat, fancy scarf with paste pin, new side- spring boots with block fronts. A native of Hanover. Has recently been living in Hamburg. States he is a fitter. ( See Case No. 36, 28th ult.). Photo will be forwarded on application. Guppy, Tom Clayton, and Tom Hoodless. BAKER and WELSH attend race meetings, and are well known as associates of expert thieves.
