DURHAM. 10.— West Hartlepool ( County).— For shop- breaking and stealing about 100 gold rings ( tee Case No. 26)— JACK • , age about 40, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion swarthy, hair ( turning grey) and moustache dark, eyes blue, speaks with an Irish accent; dress, long dark coat, cord trousers mended between the legs, grey worsted jersey, dark cap, dark spotted muffler. Stiys at common lodging houses. Is supposed to have served in the 5th Fusiliers, and to have been sentenced to 5 years' imprisonment for breaking into a public house. Information to Supt. Parkinson, West Hartle- pool. HERTFORDSHIRE. 11.— Hitchin ( County).— For stealing a horse, cart and harness ( recovered) when let out on hire— ARTHUR BLYDE, age about 21, height 5 ft. 1 or 2 in., complexion sallow, hair dark brown, fringe on forehead, eyes brown, moustache dark, full face; dress, dark tweed suit, and bard felt hat. Sup- posed native of Plaistow, Essex. He is employed as agent for Messrs. A. & G. Taylor, photographers, Ludgate Hill, London. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Reynolds, Hitcliin. KENT. 12.- Canterbury ( City). — For stealing a collecting box containing about. 2Js., from an hotel on 28th ult.— A MAN. age 25 to 28, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., complexion fresh, hair and moustache dark brown; dress, black morning coat and vest, light tweed striped trousers, black billycock hat. Carried a grey mackintosh, and a small paper parcel. Stated he was a commercial traveller for a firm of paper- bag and string manufacturers. Information to Chief Constable Farmery, Canter- bury. 13.— Folkestone ( Borough). — For failing to surrender to his bail, on 5th inst., to answer a charge of conspiracy and fraud, in connection with " The Star Portrait - Company," " The Imperial Portrait Association," Folkestone, " The Judge Publishing Company," Southend ( Archer & Co.). " The Crescent Pastel Company," Bonrnemouth ( John Forrest), and " Frederick Cair,'' Worthing— GEORGE GOULD, alias BERESFORD, and FORREST, age about 37, height 5 ft. 7 in., com- plexion swarthy, thin oval face, hair, moustache, and eyes dark brown, high cheek- bone5*, aquiline nose, one finger on left hand has no nail, and the next finger has an imperfect nail, rather bow- legged, walks with a long swinging stride ; good appear- ance, and pleasing address; speaks with an American accent. Sentenced at Ipswich, 4th July, 1889, to 5 years penal servitude. Licensed 7th Nov., 1892. P 23. THOMPSON, JAMES BURKE, JAMES MAR- SHALL, and JAMES NEVILLE, Office No. 41055, age 29, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fresh, hair light brown, eyes dark brown, right foot amputated above ankle ( since release), scars knuckle of 1st right finger, between 1st and 2nd right fingers, two on right elbow, and 1 on each shin, blue dot between each thumb and forefinger. Sentenced at Preston, 6th April, 1887, to 5 years penal servitude and 7 years police supervision for larceny. N 166. Information to the Chief Constable, Oldbam. LEICESTERSHIRE 16. — Leicester ( Borough). — For embezzling £ 28 13s. 9d., on 30thult.— WILLIAMT. CHURCH, a clerk, ago about 25, height 5 ft. 8 in., slight build, complexion pale, hair ( parted at side, plastered down and brushed up in front) dark, very slight moustache, otherwise clean shaved, very near- sighted and wears glasses, is well educated and of pleasant manners ; wears, on Sundays, a dark grey frock coat and silk hat, and, on week- days, a short brown over- coat, pilot shape, and black morning coat. He is fond of music, plays the banjo and sometimes per- forms as a nigger; he is a good baritone singer, and is in great request at smoking concerts. He also sings in amateur operatic performances and may be found in a stage chorus. His favourite songs are " Our ' Armonic Club," " The King's Own," " Masks and Faces," and " True till Death." He is also a member of the Manx Club. Absconded 30th ult. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Duns, Leicester. LINCOLNSHIRE. 17.— Grimsby ( County). — For housebreaking, at Cleethorpes, between 15th and 23rd ult.— SAMUEL WILKINSON, a gardener, age 46, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion fair, hair light or ginger, beard and moustache turning grey, rather high cheekbones, bold eyes, walks erect; dressed ( when last seen) in dark coat, grey or brown tweed trousers, blue striped collar and front, no tie, black hard felt hat, lace boots. Has worked at Sheffield, Manchester, Liverpool, Leeds and Doncaster. Is fond of horse- racing, and may be found in low public houses among betting men. Has been several times convicted of larceny. Is also wanted in Yorkshire for horse stealing. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Stennett, Grimsby. NOTTINGHAMSHIRE. IS.— Mansfield ( County).— For embezzlement — JOHN GEORGE MART, late of Sutton- in- Ashfield, age about 40, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, small light moustache; dress, brown jacket suit, turn- down collar, black hard felt hat. Carried a brown mackintosh and bhek Gladstone bag. Has been a schoolmaster and rent collector. May apply for a situation as clerk. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Honsley, Mansfield. 19. — Nottingham ( County).— For larceny ( bailee).— WILLIAM TREVELYAN, alias WAL- TER TREVELYAN, age 65 to 70, height 5 ft. 2 or 3 in., slender build, complexion pale, hair grey, whiskers and moustache, eyes blue, prominent fore- head; dress, black coat, dark cloth trousers, felt hat; usually carries a small black hand- bag. A watchmaker ; states he is a native of London. Ho goes round to country villages, collecting watches and clocks to clean, which he pledges and then decamps. Warrant issued. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Hallam, Nottingham. SHROPSHIRE. 20. — Oswestry ( Borough). — For stealing a watch— GEORGE LEWIS', age 37, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion sallow, hair, whiskers and mous- tache Bandy, large eyes, bloated face ; is of drunken habits. A tramping watchmaker; native of Bir- kenhead. Frequents common lodging houses. Is supposed to be in Lancashire or Yorkshire. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Langford, Oswestry. SUSSEX ( EAST). 21.— Hastings ( Borough).— For housebreaking, at St. Leonard's, 25th ult. — WILLIAM FOX, age 29, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion pale, hair brown, eyes hazel, cap, spur, and whip tattooed left forearm, ring middle finger left hand ; dress, grey jacket, cord trousers, hard felt hat, all old and dirty. A rag and bone collector; native of Win- chester. Is known at Eastbourne and Portsmouth. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Glenister, Has- tings. WARWICKSHIRE. 22.— Solihull ( County).— For stealing a horse ( recovered) on 12th January last, GRANVILLE P. BANTON, age SO to 35, height 5 ft. 5 in., com- plexion dark, full face, hair dark brown, beard aud moustache black, large dark eyes, is rather talkative and speaks as if a little tongucd- tied; of gentlemanly appearance and good address ; dress light tweed suit, billycock hat with small brim, or small cloth cap ; carries a heavy malacca cane, silver knob, " G. P. B." engraved thereon ; sometimes wears riding breeches and leggings. Ho was formerly manager of the Grand Hotel, Sunderland, and pro- prietor of the Winter Gardens, Birmingham. He is supposed to have left the latter place about the beginning of February last. Is accompanied by hia wife, age about 30, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 in., slight build, complexion pale; and their two children, a girl age 2, and a boy age 9 months. He took a furnished house and hired horses, agreeing to pay by the week. He sold the horses at Cave's Depository, Birmingham, and left the district. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Carbis, Solihull. WILTSHIRE. 23.— Salisbury ( City).— For uttering 6 counter- feit 5s. pieces, on 14th ult.— ALBERT CARTER, age 25, height 5 ft. 7i in., complexion fresh, long face, hair and eyes light biown, mole on back of neck, two moles on left side of neck, several cuts on both hands, scar on upper part of left leg, large red mark on lower part of back. A butcher; native of Pennard, Somersetshire. Was convicted at Reading for stealing 7 heifers, also sentenced to 6 months imprisonment at Wells Quarter Sessions, in October, 1890, for obtaining a horse by fraud. Information to Head Constable Mathews, Salis- bury. YORKSHIRE ( NORTH RiDING). 24. — Thornaby- on- Tees ( County). — For stealing a suit of clothes and a quantity of bed and table linen, on 29th ult. — A man who gave the name of REEMA. alias JOSEPH JACKSON, age 55 to 60, height about 5 ft. 6 in., com- plexion fair, thin face, rather sunken cheeks, hair grey, bald on top of head, no whiskers or mous- tache, red mark and wart on top of head, stoops a little when walking, part of right second finger amputated, speaks with a strong foreign accent; dress, new brown mixture cloth overcoat, dark cloth suit, collar and tie, hard felt hat, new side- spring boots; carried a new brown leather portmanteau and a parcel wrapped in American cloth, and had a lady's umbrella with him. Left behind some old china ( supposed stolen). Supposed native of Ger- many. Stated he was a traveller, also a doctor. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Wright, Thornaby- on- Tees. YORKSHIRE ( WEST RiDING). 25.— Leeds ( City).— For obtaining the sum of £ 3 000 by means of forged cheques— SIDNEY PHILIP POUND, age 32 ( looks younger), height about 5 feet, complexion rather sallow, hair dark, clean shaved, longish prominent nose, stylishly dressed, wearing gaiters, large collar and cuffs. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Leeds. PERSONS IN CUSTODY. DURHAM. 26.— West Hartlepool ( County).— Committed for trial at the next Quarter Sessions for shop- breaking and stealing about 100 gold rings— THOMAS BURNS, age 26, height 5 ft. 3^ in., com- plexion fresh, hair dark brown, small dark mous- tache, eyes blue, thistle tattooed on right forearm, anchor behind right thumb, dancing sailor with cutlass in hand on right forearm. A native of Berwick- on- Tweed. Has been convicted of larceny at Bcrwick- on- Tweed, and is supposed to have been convicted elsewhere. Information to Supt. Parkinson, West Hartle- pool. ESSEX. 27.— Eppi ng ( County).— Sentenced to 14 days imprisonment, at Epping Petty Sessions, on 7th inst., for assault— GEORGE DONAVON, uge 22, height FRIDAY, APRIL 21, 1893. THE POLICE GAZETTE. 7 5 ft. 4 in., complexion fresh, hair light brown, eyes grey; Japanese woman carrying a basket in her left hand and right hand on a table, a snake with head near finger- joint and leading upwards and encircling English and American ensign, and crown tattooed on right forearm, anchor back of right hand, H near right elbow, half ring right second finger, half brace- let on right wrist; 2 bracelets, large thistle, snake encircling a shield on left forearm, star on back of left hand near thumb, half ring on left second finger. Was sentenced to 6 months imprisonment on 4th May, 1892, at Marlborough Street Police Court for larceny ( person). 28.— Epping ( County).— Remanded for stealine an umbrella, with gold knob on handle — JOHN BUCKLEY ( supposed false), age 27, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion fresh, hair light brown, eyes grey ; flower pot tattooed on left forearm, female on right forearm ; dress, diagonal coat and vest, cord trou6er*, hard felt hat— all shabby. States he has served in the Royal Artillery. 29.— Epping ( County). — Remanded ( o n bail), till 14th inst., for stealing a dark blue overcoat, the property of some person unknown — HORACE POWELL, age 25, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion dark, hair dark brown, eyes brown, recent scar on bridge of nose; dress, dark clothes, and hard felt hat. Present address, 39, Gunter- grove, Fulham- road. Information to Supt. Womack, Epping. GLOUCESTERSHIRE. 30.— Fishponds ( County). — Sentenced to 3 months imprisonment on 3rd inst., for fraudulently obtaining alms— HERRMANN BERTEL, age 21, height 5 ft. in., complexion fair, hair light bi own, eyes hazel, lost first finger left hand, heart, C K., 1872, tattooed right forearm, anchor between thumb and finger left hand, mermaid, H, left foreatm, burn mark and national emblem tattooed left wrist; dress, light plaid coat, vest and cap, pepper - and - salt trousers, side- spring block front boots, nearly new. A native of Hamburg, Germany. Information to Supt. Matthews, Fishponds. HAMPSHIRE. 31. — Lyndhurst ( County). — Remanded till 17th inst., for obtaining money by false pre- tences, THOMAS BERKELEY" alias THOMAS BARCLAY, age 53, height 5 ft. llf in , complexion very dark, almost bronze colour, hair, beard and moustache black, turning grey ; eyes brown, rup- tured both sides, stoops when walking, speaks like and has the manners of a gentleman; dress, grey tweed serge frock coat, trousers and vest of same material, brown hard felt hat, Oxford shirt, coloured necktie, indiarubber cuffs and stand- up collar, button boots. States he is a surgeon and physician, and that he graduated and obtained his M. D. M. C. at Glasgow, in 1862. His modus operandi was to call on medical men, stating he had returned from Brazil, and was in want of money. He then gave the name of some gentlemen, who, he stated, had recommended him to call. If he obtained relief he went to another medical man and used the name of the gentleman who had just relieved him. He also stated he was making for Plymouth, to see a General Barton, of the Royal Artillery, who was his ancle, and that J Berkeley, Solicitor, of Gray's- inn- road, London, was his brother ( false). Ho is supposed to be known at Brighton and Burton- on- Trent. Information to Supt. Foster, Lyndhurst. HEREFORDSHIRE. 32.— Bromyard ( County).— Committed for trial at the next Assizes at Hereford for burglary— WM. JONES, alias WALTER PITT, age 62, height 5 ft. 3 in., hair dark brown, tuft on chin, bald patch about the sizo of a shilling on left side of head, lost all back teeth except one in right jaw, birthmark on right hip; dress; navy- blue monkey- jacket, fustian vest with white buttons, corduroy trousers, new boots, black hard felt hat. A native of Bodenham, Herefordshire. States he served 12 months imprisonment at Hereford some years since for cattle- stealing ; 7 years penal servitude at Usk for burglary ; 10 years at Derby for burglary; and 12 years at Oxford for burglary. Is well known to police at Sheffield and Manchester. Information to Supt. Lewis, Bromyad. pretences— FRANCIS FRANCIS ( supposed false), age about 60, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion fresh, hair, moustache, and side whiskers grey, chin shaved, eyes bine, large scar on throat, scar on left thumb and forefinger, bow- legged, has weak ankles ; dress, dark brown cloth overcoat, dark brown mixture suit, black hard felt hat, blue silk necker- chief with white spots, patent black leggings, lace buots which reach to calf of leg, three rings on fingers, wears eye- glasses; has the appearance of a farmer or dealer. Ho stated that he had taken a farm in the neigh- bourhood on a lease for 21 years. Is supposed to have committed similar offences. Information to Supt. Phenix, Oundle. 34.— Northampton ( Borough).— Sentenced to 3 months imprisonment on 30th nlto., for attempted larceny ( person) — JACOB HANDEL, age 27, height 5 ft. 3| in., complexion pale, hair black, eyes hazel, cataract on one eye. An Austrian Jew. 35.— Northampton ( Borough).— Sentenced to 6 months imprisonment on 5th inst., for attempted larceny ( person), and for larceny from an hotel— ROBERT GAYER, alias GEAR, and SMITH, age 22, height 5 ft. 5^ in., complexion pale, hair dark brown, eyes hazel. Is supposed to be an expert thief. Information to Chief Constable Mardlin, North- ampton. give any account of himself. Appears well ac- quainted with Police Court procedure. NORTHUMBERLAND. 36.— Rothbury ( County).— Remanded till 15th inst. for larceny ( dwelling)— WILLIAM WILSON, age 20, height 5 ft. 10 in., complexion fresh, hair light brown, scar top and centre of forehead, on both lips, left side of mouth, back of left thigh, both kneecaps, left shin, left ankle, and left instep, " A " indistinctly tattooed left forearm, coal mark back of left hand near thumb joint; dress, faded dark coat, brown jacket and vest with narrow black stripe, blue trousers, navvy's boots ( much worn), and cap with corded edges. A native of Boston, Lincolnshire. Information to Snpt. Dobson, Rothbury. SUSSEX ( EAST). 37.— Uckfield ( County). — Sentenced to 1 month's imprisonment and 3 years in a reformatory, on 10th inst., for stealing a horse and van.— DANIEL O'BRIEN, age 15, height 5 ft., com- plexion fresh, hair light brown, eyes blue, full face ; dress, old rusty black coat, black cloth vest, brown striped trousers, black hard felt hat. Gave his address as 66, Great Peter- street, Clapham Park, London ( false). 38. — Uckfield ( County). — Sentenced to 1 month's imprisonment on 10th inst. for larceny ( shop door)— WILLIAM BURGE, alias GEORGE SMITH, a labourer, age 23, height 5 ft. 6 in., com- plexion fresh, hair and moustache brown, no whiskers; dress, long brown overcoat, corouroy trousers, white wrap round neck, hard felt hat, very old lace boots. Is supposed to be wanted for offences elsewhere. Information to Supt. Diplock, Uckfield. 39.— Hastings ( Borough). — Sentenced to two months imprisonment for larceny ( lodger)— JOHN MORGAN, a tramping Irish tailor, age 43, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion fresh, hair, whiskers, and short beard, black, eyes hazel, small scar from scald under right ear; dress, old black cloth coat and vest, dark grey trousers, brown hard felt hat. NORTHAMPTONSHIRE. 33. — Oundle ( County). — Remanded till IStb icst., for obtaining food and lodgings by false STAFFORDSHIRE. 40.— Walsall ( Borough).— Woodcut portrait and description of ALGERON CAMPBELL, alias CAP- TAIN CAMPBELL, TURNER, MAITLAND, LAWLEY GRANT, GORDON, WHITEHOUSE. HUNTER, GREENWAY, ROUSE, CHIPMAN, BROWN, WISEMAN, WELLS, WM. EVER- SLEIGH GLOVER, and WHITESIDE, committed for trial at the next Quarter Sessions, for fraud — Age 43, height 5 ft. 7£ ill,, complexion fresh, hair auburn, turning grey, eyes grey, bald top of head, large scar top of left hip. States he is a native of Nor. vood, Surrey, but refuses to SARAH! TURNER, alias GLOVER, CAMP- BELL, GRANT, GORDON, WHITEHOUSE and WHITESIDE, age about 38, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion and hair dark, eyes hazel. A native of Princes End, Tipton, Staffordshire. Their modus operandi, since 1883, has been to call upon tradesmen and give orders for goods, the male prisoner either representing himself as a captain or doctor. He also called upon medical men offering to appoint them as medical examineis for an In- surance Company on condition that they insured their lives with the company, he drawing the first premium, and then absconding. Has been pre- viously convicted at Leicester, Weymouth, and Lincoln. Is supposed to be wanted elsewhere. Information to Chief Constable Taylor, Walsall. YORKSHIRE ( WEST RIDING). 41. — Doncaster ( Borough). — Committed for trial at the next Borough Sessions for larceny— Supervisee JAMES JONES, alias DOOLEY, CARNEY, DUFFY, SMITH and NOLAN, Office No. 35670, age 53, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion dark, hair brown, eyes hazel, scar right and centre of forehead, large scar right side throat, both feet deformed and left turned inwards, left leg wasted, walks lame with a stick. Sentenced at Bedford, 23rd June, 1876, to 14 years penal servitude and 7 years police supervision for larceny. Licensed 12 th July, 1888, and since convicted at Sheffield, Hull, York and Scarborough. Supposed by a TRAMP, age about 40, height 5 ft. 2 or 3 in., com- plexion dark, hair dark brown, turning grey, small dark moustache, splay- footed; dress, long black coat, dark grey striped trousers, very old boots. Information to Inspector Summers, Chesham. APPOINTMENT or FIRE BRIGADE OFFICER. THE Corporation of South Shields require a competent man to fill the position of Fire Brigade Officer. He must be a trained Fireman, and able to act as Engineer, if necessary, and he will be required to repair and keep in order all hose pipes. The successful applicant will also be appointed an Inspector in the Borough Police Force and a knowledge of police duties is essential. He will be required to devote the whole of his time to police and fire brigade duties under the direction of the Chief Constable. The salary will be £ 2 a week ( subject to a deduction of two- and- a- half per cent. to. be paid into the Police Pension FundJ, with free quarters in the Brigade House, but without light or fuel.
