All announcements for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communications upon them should be addressed to THE EDITOB OP THB POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YABD, LONDON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are su/ Jicient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 8. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. • k In all cases where a reward is offered the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions be clearly stated. 5. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property, will be prominently inserted, with detailed particulars, at a cost of 15*. per portrait, and of Is. 6d. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, including the expense of engraving on wood. 8. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; ana, if the name of such person be required to be inserted, and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. T. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed by an officer than Inspector, or analogous thereto. \ of not less rank 8. Announcements of all persons to be Of^ rehended or of stolen property bear a number, a,. d an alphabetically arranged by counties. g. The force which causes part iculars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted ts the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases, the officer signing the request for insertion of any announcement, will bt wholly responsible for any proceedings whicA may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be jorxarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They mutt be clearly written on one tide of the paper only, be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, by cheque, crossed " Drummond Sf Co.," Post Office Order payable at Cnaring Cross, Postal Order, or im Stamps. ' 13. Advertisements are accepted for the POLICE GAZETTE through Mr. James Willing, 125, Strand, London, the sole Agent, who will furnish the rates on application. 14. Cities and Boroughs therein, arranged in strict alphabetical order. 2.— Any additional copies of the GAZETTE beyond the number at present supplied will be forwarded on application in the form set forth in circular of the 7th of November, 1883. 3.— It is particularly requested that any com- plaints as to the non- delivery or of irregularity in the date of delivery of the POLICE GAZETTE, may be at once notified to the Editor. < d) The following is a copy of the order which governs the circulation, by the Metropolitan Police, of advertisements, or reward bills, for the discovery of property or the detec- tion of crime. The Editor inserts it, in hope of preventing delays which sometimes occur in publishing such notices, on account of their not being in accordance with the regu- lations in force in the Metropolis :— 1. Printed hand- bills, or other advertisements, offering a reward for the discovery of property or the detection of crime, whether printed and issued by the Metropolitan Police, or distributed and exhibited, with the sanction of the Commissioners, on the application of private persons, or of the Police of any County or Borough, must be clearly expressed in relation to the following points— ( à) The amount of the reward. ( á) The conditions on which it is payable. ( c) The person by whom it will be paid. ( ci) That the name and address of the printer appear thereon. 1 No expression must be used in such an advertise- ment, in relation to property stolen, or criminally taken or disposed of, holding out any expectation that the reward will be paid on its return without the offender being brought to trial, or without enquiry. NOTE.— There are 177 Stations of the Metropolitan Police Force at which Notices can be posted. SPECIAL NOTICE. METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT. THE NATIONAL DETECTIVE AGENCY, NEW INN CHAMBERS, WYCH- STREET, STRAND, W. C. ( C. O., C. I. D. Correspondence, No. 80343.) Numerous appli u'; i< buta been received at New Scotland Yard as to the bona fides of this business. The inquiries made indicate that the amount of business transacted by the Agency is wholly inadequate to justify the appointment of agents throughout the provinces, and therefore the fees demanded from applicants seem to be scarcely honest. APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT. METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT. 1.— E Division. — For failing to surrender to his bail at the Central Criminal Court, 25th ult.. for offences under the Bankruptcy Laws— GEORGE FERDINAND YON WEISSENFELD, alias Dr. SPRINGMULT and WILD, a German, age 42, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion fresh, hair, whiskers and moustache light ( turning grey), lost left eye and wears a black shade, speaks several languages; dresses well, usually wears soft felt hat of German style. Warrant issued. 2.— T Division.— For stealing a quantity of ginger beer— WILLIAM CLARKE, age 26, height 5 ft. 10 in., complexion ruddy, blotches on face, hair light brown, clean shaved, but may let his whiskers, & c., grow, eyes blue, scar over left ear; dress, dark mixture tweed jacket and vest, police uniform trousers, light tweed cap. May seek employment at ginger beer manufactories as carman. Warrant issued. 3. — V Division. — For stealing a watch ( re- covered) on 28th ult.— GEORGE HICKS, alias GEORGE ROSS, age 45, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion dark, hair, side whiskers and moustache ( turning grey) dark; dress, dark coat, cord trousers and vest, militia boots, red tie, black hard felt hat. A labourer; native of Windsor, where his mother is said to keep a laundry. Has a brother at Woking- ham, Berks, and is said to be known at Reading. Warrant issued. Information to be forwarded to the Metropolitan Police Office, New Scotland Yard, S. W. ANGLESEY. 4.— Menai Bridge ( County). — For stealing £ 2 gold and a gold keeper ring set 3 white stones— JANE EVANS, age 20, height 5 ft., complexion fair, hair brown, eyes blue; dress, long dark cloak, black felt hat trimmed with red plush and red feather. She is supposed to have left Bangor for Manchester on 26th ult., to join Thomas Egan, an Irishman, who stops at common lodging houses, age 29, height 5 ft. 7^ in., complexion sallow, hair brown, eyes blue, 2 scars centre of forehead, scar above left buttock. Warrant issued. Information to Inspector Jones, Menai Bridge. BUCKINGHAMSHIRE. 5.— High Wycombe ( County). — For larceny ( bailee), obtaining watches for repairs— DAVID JOHN TYLER, age 38, height 5 ft. in., com- plexion dark, hair ( bald on top) and moustache dark brown, eyes grey, lost right, may endeavour to get a glass one, large full face, large front teeth wide apart; dress, black coat and vest, striped trousers, and hard felt hat. A travelling watch and clock cleaner; native of Cuckfield, Sussex. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Maneely, High Wycombe. 6.— Slough ( County).— For disobeying order to contribute towards the support of his wife— FREDE- RICK ERNEST BARKER, age 28, height 5 ft. 44 in., complexion, hair, moustache and eyes dark; dress, brown knicker, or dark blue serge suit. A clerk; late of Maidenhead, Berks. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Sutton, Slough. CHESHIRE. 7.— Nantwich ( County).— For obtaining money by false pretences, 20th ult.— A MAN, age 25 to 30, height 5 ft. 7 in., small moustache and beard, aqui- line nose, right arm crippled; dress, merchant service costnme, white turn- down collar and red tie. This man stated he had been to Nantwich to see a Captain Fitzgerald who owed him some money, and that he had been unable to see him, also that he wanted to join a yacht at Cowes but had not the means to get there. He borrowed £ 2, promising to return the money after he arrived at his destination. He calls upon clergymen principally, states he is Captain ( varies the name), pretends to know the person he is addressing, shakes hands warmly, and produces a letter, the purport of which is that he has the offer of a ship at Southampton, but has not sufficient money to take him there He is also wanted at Birkenhead ( County) for obtaining money from clergymen. Information to Supt. Leah, Nintwich. DENBIGHSHIRE. 8.— Wrexham ( County). — For stealing, 22nd 2 THE POLICE GAZETTE. TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 2, 1892. ult., a pony and trap ( recovered)— A MAN, age 55 to 60, height about 5 ft. 9 in., complexion pale, hair ( cut sbort) white, bald top of head, long moustache ( almost white), thin face, regular features, long thin neck, stoops slightly, but has the appearance of an old soldier; dress, short light dust coat, dark trousers with brown stripe, black hard felt hat, wore mittens, heavy boots ( supposed military), shabby- genteel style of dress; carried a knotted cane with buckhorn handle. Stated he was a Government surveyor. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Vaughan, Wrexham. HEREFORDSHIRE. 9. — Bromyard ( County). — For committing wilful and corrupt perjury— SAMUEL DUFTY, age 34, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion sallow, hair dark brown, moustache ( rather heavy) light brown; dressed, when last seen, in dark suit and black hard hat. Absconded from Malvern 16th Sept. last. A labourer, but. may be found at gasworks, or a coal wharf. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Lewis, Bromyard. HERTFORDSHIRE. 10.— Ware ( County).— For neglecting to obey an order of maintenance— THOMAS RICKETTS, age 29 ( looks older), height 5 ft. lOf in., complexion dark, hair light brown, eyes blue, scar on bridge of nose, " T" tattooed left forearm. A well- sinker; native of Hoddesdon, Herts. Warrant issued. Information to Captain Wymer, Snpt., Ware. KENT. 11.— West Mailing ( County).— For deserting his wife and family— WILLIAM BURNETT, alias " DICKEY," age 28, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., com- plexion fresh, hair dark, few whiskers ( if any) ; generally dressed in cord jacket with fustian back and sleeves, cord trousers, heavy boots and rough cap. A native of Stansted. He is a poacher, and may be found in the county of Essex. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Lane, West Mailing. 12.— Maidstone ( Borough).— For stealing, 21st nit.— A black diagonal morning coat and vest; a pair of dark blue striped trousers, bone buttons; a plain dark grey Chesterfield overcoat ( new); a pair of brown striped tweed trousers and vest; a walacca walking stick, silver- plated knob; and a hairbrush and comb.— WILLIAM ABBOT, atailor, age about 33, height about 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., complexion fair, small features, heavy light moustache, few aide whiskers. Warrant issued. Information to Head Constable Dalton, Maidstone. LANCASHIRE. 13.-— Burnley ( County).— For failing to report — Supervisee ROBERT ACKRIGG, alias AIK- RIGG, age 22, height 5 ft. 8£ in , complexion fair, hair light brown, eyes grey, eyebrows meet, freckled on forehead, Roman nose, small mole left cheek; dressed in coid trousers, velvet jacket, light cap. A quarryman. Sentenced at Preston, 8th April, 1891, to 9 months hard labour and 3 years police super- vision for fraud. Information to Supt. Barnett, Burnley. 14.— Salford ( Borough).— For failing to report— Supervisee THOMAS HARLAND, alias THOMAS MORLAND, Office No. 40267, age 24, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion fair, hair brown, eyes dark brown, large birthmark right side face, head, and neck, and crown of head, scar on knuckle and outside of left thumb. Sentenced at Northallerton, 19th October, 1886, to 5 years penal servitude and 2 years police supervision for larceny. Information to the Chief Constable, Town Hall, Salford. LEICESTERSHIRE. 15.— Leicester ( Borough).— For stealing, 25th nit., a gold lever watch ( recovered) ; 1 silver English lever, small size, out of repair; 1 silver Geneva watch, No. 134340, Swiss make, crystal glass— A MAN, age about 30, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., thin build, complexion sallow, long features, hair ( thin on top) light, clean shaved, dirty, irregular teeth, chipped in front; wore a brown jacket, appear- ance of a shop assistant. Was in company of George Spencer, age 40, height 5 ft. 2 in., hair brown, clean shaved; dress, short black coat, brown mixture trousers ( too long), black billycock hat. He follows race meetings. 16.— Leicester ( Borough).— For stealing from dwelling- house, 25th ult., a silver English lever watch, No. 13673, maker, " Mercer, London," on works, and " E. Lamb, Burton- on- Trent," scratched on dome, silver curb- pattern albert, with patent key attached; a light blue Chesterfield overcoat, plaid lining, small size; a silk handkerchief, blue squares and red border, and a small meerschaum pipe in case— A MAN, age about 32, height 5 ft. 5 or 6 in., hair brown, moustache inclined to be sandy; dress, short light dust- coat, dark grey trousers, black billycock hat. 17.— Leicester ( Borough).— For stealing, 11th ult., a blue Melton overcoat, velvet collar, bone buttons, usual pockets ( nearly new); a silver lever watch, No. 18001, white dial; an 18- « arat gold albert, seal set with red stone attached, and a 9- carat gold signet ring, set with blood- red stone— A MAN, who took lodgings at the house on the previous evening, and stated that he was working for the Telegraph Company, age 40 to 50, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., complexion fresh, hair and moustache ( turning grey) dark, dots tattooed back of right hand; dress, black jacket and vest, striped trousers, black billycock hat, stand- up collar, blue tie. 18.— Leicester ( Borough).— For stealing, be- tween 16th and 17th ult., a blue twill coat and vest, a brown twill coat and vest, and a silk handkerchief — A MAN, who lodged in the house for two nights, age about 30, height 6 ft.; dress, dark coat and trousers, and black billycock hat. Information to Chief Constable Duns, Leicester. LINCOLNSHIRE. 19.— Kesteven ( County).— For stealing a white silk handkerchief, at Metheringham, on 24th ult. — GEORGE STEPHENSON, age 27, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, small dark moustache; dress, dark grey check coat ( repaired at left shoulder), brown trousers ( repaired inside left thigh), lace boots, cut at side to ease toes, black alpaca cap with peak. Has been employed by the proprietors of shooting galleries, roundabouts, & c. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Cabourn, Kesteven. NORFOLK. 20.— King's Lynn ( Borough).— For obtaining money by false pretences — WALTER GRAHAM, age 28, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, heavy dark moustache, no whiskers, of good address ; dress, brown or grey overcoat, dark tweed suit, black bowler hat or light cap. A native of Worcester. This man calls upon corn and hay merchants, and represents himself as agent in advance for Lord George Sanger's Circus; makes contracts for the supply of fodder; states that the Circus will visit the town in about eight days, and draws commission on the transaction. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Ware, King's Lynn. SHROPSHIRE. 21.— Oswestry ( Borough).— For larceny ( bailee) on 27th ult.— ANN CLARKE, age 25, height 5 ft. 2 in., complexion pale, hair and eyes dark, has two prominent front teeth ; dress, light blue dress with white spots, grey shawl with light stripes, dark hat turned up all round and trimmed with white flowers. Is of loose habits. May apply for a situation at low public houses. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Langford, Oswestry. SUSSEX ( EAST). 22.— Hastings ( Borough).— For deserting his wife and family — FREDERICK WILLIAM YOUNG, age 35, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, heavy moustache, eyes hazel, smart appearance, generally well dressed. Has been a bandsman in the Army and plays the flute, clarionet and violin; sings soprano- falsetto with bands in the streets and at mu? ic halls. A native of Hastings. Warrant issued. 23.— Hastings ( Borough). — For obtaining drapery goods, & c., by false pretences, 12tli ult.— A woman who gave the name of Mrs. HERBERT MURRAY, but whose real name is supposed to be ALICE CHANEY, alias EAST, age 30, height 5 ft. 3 in., complexion and lnir ( cut short) dark, eyes brown; dress, long grey mantle and black bonnet with white veil; has the appearance of a superior servant. Is supposed to have been convicted of fraud at Margate Sessious in January last, and at Canterbury in August, in the names of Chancy and East. Has friends residing at Greenwich. ( See Case No. 40, 14th ult.) Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Glenister, Hastings. SUSSEX ( WEST). 24.— Horsham ( County).— For stealing a waist- coat and £ 1 13s. cash, on 25th ult. — JOHN WESTON, alias HARRY SKINNER, age about 30, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., complexion fair, hair brown, moustache ( curled at ends) light, eyes grey, smart appearance; dress, serge jacket, grey trousers ( worn at bottoms), lace boots, grey cap with peak worn over eyes. He is a carpenter by trade, but works as a labourer. Has served in the Royal Engineers. A native of East Sussex. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Denman, Horsham. WARWICKSHIRE. 25.— Aston ( County).— For stealing £ 23 gold, a jubilee 5s.- piece, and a pair of brown cord trousers — FREDERICK BARNES, age 19, height 5 ft. 1 or 2 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, rather rough and blotchy face, high forehead, slightly round- shouldered ; dress, rough blue overcoat, grey cloth suit with slight mixture of red, brown hard felt hat, may be wearing the stolen trousers. Warrant issued,. ,, Information to Supt. Walker, Aston Manor. £ 5 REWARD. 26.— Leamington ( Borough).— Portrait and description of THOMAS CORLEY. a butler, whose apprehension is sought for stealing— 1 dozen silver dessert spoons, fiddle pattern, marked D in old English ; 1 dozen silver tea spoons, with same mark ; 1 round silver cream jug ( shallow), fluted, very old, marked D in old English; 1 small silver crcam jug, narrow neck, stands on three legs, one of which has been repaired, marked at bottom with letters H. M.; 23 large white handle knives ( new) ; 12 small ditto, all marked " J. Wolstenholm & Son's Celebrated IXL Cutlery". Age 37, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion fair, clear skin, hair light brown, clean shaved, except a little side whiskers; dress, black suit with overcoat, and bowler hat. He also took with him a shabby black bag, which is supposed to have contained the stolen property. Was employed for some years as waiter at the Grosvenor Hotel, London; has also been in service in Paris, and can speak French fairly well. May endeavour to leave the country or obtain employment as a waiter. Absconded 25th ulto. Warrant issued. The above reward will be paid by Mr. J. W. Hassall, Solicitor for the Leamington Old Association for the Prosecution of Felons, for the apprehension of Corley. TUESDAY, O C T O B E R 25, 1892. THE POLICE GAZETTE. 8 27. — Leami ngton ( Borough). — Portrait and description of E. EDWARDS, alias TURNER, • whose apprehension is sought for obtaining money by false pretences, viz., by an advertising swindle and fictitious cheque. Age about 40, height 5 ft 8 in., stoutish build, complexion sallow, long nose, hair dark brown, Tather heavy moustache and mutton- ehop whiskers, eyes blue; dress, dark- coloured over- coat with velvet collar, black morning coat, vest and trousers, high silk hat with broad black band, black bow necktie, sometimes wears a light grey tennis cap; had with him a black bag and brown paper parcel. His modus operandi is to call upon tradesmen soliciting advertisements for portfolio covers for the " Illustrated London News," " Graphic," " Queen," " Punch," " Tit- Bits," & c., promising on behalf of " The Union Company" to supply the foregoing papers free for twelve months to all the principal hotels in the town. He has covers of different sizes with him, gets the advertisements printed and gutns them on the covers, and draws payments, after which no more is heard of him or the free papers. He lodged at a good hotel, and upon leaving induced the manageress to change him a cheque for £ 7 os., drawn on Messrs. Ransom, Bouverie & Co., 1, Pall Mall East ( amalgamated long since with Barclay's), by J. Harding & Co., in favour of E. Edwards, since returned marked " no account." At the address, 10, Thavies Inn, he has had a small base- ment office for about two months. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Brabner, Leaming- ton. YORKSHIRE ( EAST RIDING). 28.— Hull ( Borough). — For felony— A man, who gave the name of DICKSON, age 22 to 25, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion fresh, hair and moustache dark ; smart appearance ; dress, slate- coloured nap overcoat, black ribbed cloth jacket and vest bound with braid, dark btriped trousers. Is supposed to be a gentleman's servant; native of Bridlington. Warrant issued. 29.— H U11 ( Borough) — For neglecting to maintain his family— JOSEPH RANDALL, age 35 to 40, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, shuffling gait. A fireman ; native of Norfolk. Is supposed to be sailing out of some seaport town. Warrant issued. 30.— Hull ( Borough).— For fraud— CHARLES JAMES SMITH, late seed merchant, carrying on business under the name of Smith and Dunipace, age 26, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion sallow, hair ( cut short), slight side whiskers and moustache dark, hangs his head when walking. He left Hull on 24th ulto., and was seen in London on ihe same day near King's Cross. Warrant issued. It is requested that inquiry be made at shipping offices, outward bound vessels, & c. Information to Captain Gurney, Chief Constable, Hull. YORKSHIRE ( WEST RIDING). 31.— Dewsbury ( County).— For failing to sur- render to his bail at Wakefield Quarter Sessions, on 17th ult., for obtaining money by false pretences— SAMUEL WILSON MYERSON, a German Jew, late of Leeds,, age 25, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes hazel. He professes to be an optician. Warrant istned. Information to Supt. Midgley, Dewsbury. 32.— Wakefield ( County). — For embezzling £ 415- GEORGE HENRY TOMLINSON, age 35 to 40, but looks younger, height 5 ft. 8 in., com- plexion sallow, hair, whiskers and eyes dark ; dress, light dust overcoat, light brown suit, black felt hat. A. native of Walton, near Wakefield. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Shepley, Court House, Wakefield. PERSONS IN CUSTODY. DENBIGHSHIRE. 33.— Wrexham ( County).— Sentenced to 4 months imprisonment, 24th ult., for larceny ( confidence trick)— ALFRED MURRAY, age 30, height 5 ft. 9 in., stout build, complexion fresh, full face, huir light, moustache sandy, otherwise clean shaved, prominent prey eyes, scar on temple over right eye, small blue mark in front of right ear; dress, black coat and vest, striped cloth trousers; of respectable appearance. Was sentenced to 6 months imprisonment at Manchester Sessions in December, 1881, for stealing £ 17 10s. cash. Had in his possession a pawn ticket for a six- stone diamond snake ' ring, pawned in Liverpool in September last for £ 6, and one for a single- stone diamond ring pawned in Liverpool, in July last for ± 21. The thief or thieves left concealed in a cellar a steel jemmy, well finished, 3 ft. 2 in. in length, chisel- shaped, with lift at one end, 1 inch broad ; the other end tapered square with sharp point, name— Hattersley, Leeds, 86; Hattersley's Patent Lock stamped thereon; a piece unbleached cotton, doubled and machine stitched, farming 55 squares, which are cut into pockets suitable for carrying watches, having strips of different cotton for tying at waist and over shoulders rough- sewn to it with black thread. The man hereafter described is strongly suspected to have had some connection with the theft, and is believed to be an associate of Scotch aud English thieves.
