All announcements for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communications upon them thould be addressed to THE EDITOR OF THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YAED, LONDON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 8. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. 4. In all cases where a reward is offered the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and ine exact conditions be clearly stated. 5. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property, will be prominently inserted, with detailed particulars, at a cost of 15 « . per portrait, and of 7s. Gd. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, including the expense of engraving on wood. 6. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and, if the name of such person be required to be inserted, and no warrant is in forceagainst him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. T. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed bu an officer of not less rank than Inspector, or analogous thereto. 8. Announcements of all persons to be apprehended or of stolen property bear a number, a.. d art alphabetically arranged by counties. g. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases, the officer signing the request for insertion of any announcement, trill be wholly responsible for any proceedings whioA may resw't from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forwarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They mutt be clearly written on one tide of the paper only, be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, by cheque, crossed " Drummond Sf Co.," Post Office Order payable at Cnarmg Cross, Postal Order, or ia Stamps. 13. Advertisements are accepted for the POLICE GAZETTE through Mr. James Willing, 125, Strand, London, the sole Agent, who will furnish the rates on application. 14. Cities and Boroughs therein, arranged in strict alphabetical order. 2.— Any additional copies of the GAZETTE beyond the number at present supplied will be forwarded on application in the form set forth in circular of the 7th of November, 1883. 3.— It is particularly requested that any com- plaints as to the non- delivery or of irregularity in the date of delivery of the POLICE GAZETTE, may be at once notified to the Editor. The following is a copy of the order which governs the circulation, by the Metropolitan Police, of advertisements, or reward bills, for the discovery of property or the detec- tion of crime. The Editor inserts it, in hope of preventing delays which sometimes occur in publishing such notices, on account of their not being in accordance with the regu- lations in force in the Metropolis :— 1. Printed hand- bills, or other advertisements, offering a reward for the discovery of property or the detection of crime, whether printed and issued by the Metropolitan Police, or distributed and exhibited, with the sanction of the Commissioners, on the application of private persons, , or of the Police of any County or Borough, must be clearly expressed in relation to the following points— ( à) The amount of the reward. ( á) The conditions on which it is payable. ( o) The person by whom it will be paid. ( d) That the name and address of the printer appear thereon. t. No expression must be used in such an advertise ment, in relation to pi operty stolen, or criminally taken or disposed of, holdi g out any expectation that the reward will be paid on its return without the offender being brought to tria or without enquiry. NOTE.— There are 177 Stations of the Metropolitan Police Force at which Notices can be posted. APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT. METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT. 1— Convict Supervision Department. — For stealing, lOch inst., a grey bag purse ( 2 clasps) c > ntaining £ 4 10s. gold, 2 meerschaum cigarette- holders, with amber mouthpieces, in brown morocco leather cases, lined blue silk, initials " R. E." inside, and a brown morocco cigarette case— Licens e Holder ROBERT HOLROYD GOAT, alias ROBERT and HERBERT GOAT, Office No. 43280, age 23, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes blue, proportionate build, scar left temple, 3 right knee, and 1 front of left leg; dress, dark jacket suit, black felt hat. Was sentenced at Middlesex Sessions, 8th October, 1888, to 5 years penal servitude for larceny, and licensed 21st July last. His father keeps a provision shop at Russell- street, Wisbech. 2. — E Division. — Woodcut portrait and description of LOUIS LEON GOLDSTEIN, alias HARRY ROBERTS, a theatrical agent, jeweller, & c., whose apprehension is sought for fraud, con- spiracy, and indecent assault— Age about 40, height about 5 ft. 10 in., complexion dark, hair ( inclined to curl) and eyebrows black, small black side whiskers and moustache, curled at ends, rather high forehead; of Jewish appearance. A native of London. Absconded about 5th March last. Warrant issued. Information to be forwarded to the Metropolitan Police Office, New Scotland Yard, S. W. generally dressed in light clothes, and brown felt hat. A German Jew. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Mc William, 26, Old Jewry, E. C. CITY OF LONDON. 3— For embezzling £ 70 — G. H. T. PETHIG, late of 51, Great Prescott- street, E., age 22, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion fair, very slight moustache, eyes greyish blue, large mouth, prominent lips ( especially the lower one), large and prominent ears, long thin arms and legs, arms always restless; AYRSHIRE. 4.— Ayr ( Burgh). — For stealing, 10th inst., a lady's gold geneva watch, engraved case, gold dome and hands, white dial, medium size ; a 9- carat gold albert, curb pattern— A WOMAN, age 20 to 25, height 5 ft. 6 in., slender build, complexion pale, long thin face, hair black or dark brown, eyes and eyelashes dark, small neat hand, speaks with English accent, wore eye- glasses ; good manner and genteel appearance; dress, black jacket, loose shape, high collar plait at back, ribbons hanging from near neck behind, black dress, black felt hat, broad scooped shape, turned up behind, trimmed with black ribbon and black bird's wing, yellow kid gloves, gold brace- let with tassel— clothing good and fashionable. Left behind a white- handled umbrella. She made an unsuccessful attempt to obtain fur mantles to the value of £ 36, and immediately left Ayr by 5.5 p. m. train, booking for Prestwick, but travelled to and left the train at Paisley. Is supposed to be wanted at Paisley and Gourock for similar offences. Information to Supt. M'Kay, Ayr. BEDFORDSHIRE. 5. — Bedford ( Borough). — For perjury — SYDNEY HARRY LESTER, age 28 to 30, height about 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fair, hair light brown, slight light moustache, very talkative; uses profane language very freely. Has the appearance of a betting man and dresses accordingly. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Thody, Bedford. BERKSHIRE. 6. — Windsor ( Borough).— For stealing a lady's jacket ( recovered), ? th inst.; and a gentle- man's old silver English watch, No. 50977, " Grant" scratched inside, 10th inst.—" JINGLES," age 23, height 5 ft. 9 in., complexion fresh, long thin face, hair dark brown, clean shaved; dress, black morning coat, dark tight- fitting cord trousers, white muffler, tied in sailor's knot, soft peaked cap; generally carries a sack. Sopposed to be a native of Kiugston- on- Thames. Calls at houses under the pretence of dealing in rags and bones. Information to Head Constable Armour, Windsor. BRECONSHIRE. 7.— Crickhowell ( County). — For obtaining money by false pretences— OWEN JONES, alias ROBERTS, age 34, height 5 ft. 4 in, complexion 2 THE POLICE GAZETTE. TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 592, 1892. sallow, hair dark brown, eyes dark grey, pockpitted' scar under right chin, fourth finger right hand con- tracted ; dress, dark suit, black cloth, cap, wears a • white apron. A cative of Amlwch, North Wales. He travels the country, cleaning clocks, and carries a small black bag'containing his tools. Was convicted of felony at Aberystwith, loth June, 1887; at Carnarvon,; 6th July, 1883,^ at Ruthin, 3rd January, 1800; and at Carnarvon, 14th July, 1891. Warrant issued. 8.— Crickhowell ( County). — For obtaining £ 5 by false pretences, on 20th July last— GEORGE WILLIAMS, alias GEORGE SPARKES, & c., age 35 to 40, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., complexion fair, hair and moustache sandy, bare spot back of head, cross- flags and crown tattooed left forearm, 2 scars inside left leg, scar in groin; dress, black worsted coat and vest, bluish- green woollen trousers, white stand- up collar, coloured tie, black bowler hat; wore a silver " Mizpah " ring on little finger of right hand. He stated that he had been in the Army, and had just arrived from abroad, and was the bearer of 4 parrots, which he was to present to different persons in the town. Is identical with man described in Cases No. 42, 15th July; No. 15, 25th July; and No. 30, 9th September last. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Winterson, Crickhowell. CHESHIRE. 9. — Altrincham ( County). — For stealing £ 37— GEORGE WALE, alias FINNEY, a gipsy, age 21 or 22, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion fresh, hair very ligbt, no whiskers or moustache, very thick lips, one eye appears to be partly closed; dress, black melton single- breasted jacket, raised seams, patched pockets ; brown narrow ribbed, tight fitting cord trousers, blue muffler with white spots, square toed lace boots. Hawks skin rugs and wickerwork. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Walker, Altrincham. 10.— Birkenhead ( County). — For embezzle- ment at Bromborough, 19th ult.— GEORGE T. LOWRY, age about 22, height about 5 ft. 8 in., slight huild, complexion pale, hair dark, small side whiskers, rather large or fall eyes, red spot ( supposed birth- mark) under right eye ; smart appearance ; dressed, when last seen, in a dark tail coat, double stitched, striped trousers, black hard felt hat, may be wearing a light tweed cap with peak. A groom or coachman ; supposed to be a native of Liverpool. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Supt. Hindley, Birkenhead. DENBIGHSHIRE. 11. — Denbigh ( County). — For stealing at Ruthin, 4th inst., a valuable oil painting ( by Hug- gins) of a black retriever dog, white on breast, size ft. by 1 ft., taken out of frame— TWO MEN ( 1st) age 25 to 30, height about 5 ft. 10 in., slight build, hair and moustache dark ; dress, dark over- coat, hard felt hat. ( 2nd) age about 22, height 5 ft 2 in., hair and moustache light; dress, light suit and cap. Both are supposed to be expert thieves. Information to Supt. Jones, Denbigh. DURHAM. 12.— Durham ( City).— For failing to report— License Holder JOHN WILSON, alias EVANS, and REED, Office No. 43457, age 77, height 5 ft. 3 in., complexion sallow, hair grey, eyes grey, scars on forehead, right wrist, back of right thumb, below left elbow, on left buttock, left knee, and back of left thigh, right forefinger fractured, 2nd left toe bent. Sentenced at Durham, 30th April, 1881, to 10 years penal servitude for larceny, and at Sun- derland, 30th June, 1890, to 3 months hard labour and license revoked for larceny. Liberated on second license, 10th August last. Information to the Chief Constable, Durham. 13.— Sunderland ( Borough).— For embezzle- ment and fraud— GEORGE STEPHENSON LAW- SON, a solicitor, age about 50, height about 5 ft. 10 in., complexion fresh, liair very light brown, long light ginger whiskers and moustache, turning grey, eyes light blue, is short- sighted and constantly wears spectacles, walks with a long step, and has a lounging gait; generally dresses in black frock coat and high silk hat, and carries an umbrella. A native of Sunderland. Absconded 5th or 6th ult. May endeavour to leave the country. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Huntley, Sunder- land. GLAMORGANSHIRE. £ 50 REWARD. 14.— Bridgend ( County). — For embezzlement and forgery- JAMES LOVE LUCK, age 54, height 5 ft. 6 in., round, full and very red face, hair, whiskers and moustache grey,- eyes dark, red nose, short neck, thick hands, long fingers, short legs, is subject to severe attacks of coughing; speaks French ; usually dresses in dark clothes. A ship- broker and mer3bant; late of Aberavon, which place he left on the 18th July last, for Paddington. Warrant issued. The above reward will be paid by Evan Evans, Esq., Aberavon, Glamorganshire, to any perRon giving such information as will lead to the appre- hension of Loveluck. Information to Supt. Thomas, Bridgend. GLOUCESTERSHIRE. 15.— Chipping Sodbury ( Oounty). — For stealing, 24th ult., a watch and chain fbund pledged at Bath— A MAN, age about 20, height about 5 ft. 5 in., complexion dark, hair dark brown; dress, dark clothes, serge trousers, check shirt, no collar or tie, black bowler hat. Information to Supt. Critchley, Chipping Sodbury. 16.— Stroud ( County).— For failing to report— License Holder EDWARD O'BRIEN", Office No. 42140, age 30, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion fresh, hair black, eyes grey, scars left cheek, right eye- brow, back of head, right forearm and right knee- cap, cross on each forearm, blue mark back of left hand. A labourer. Sentenced at Cardiff, 11th February, 1884, to 10 years penal servitude for manslaughter. Licensed 16th November, 1831. This man reported, 27th ult., his intention of going to Sharpness to get a ship, and has not been heard of since. Information to Supt. Harrison, Stroud. HAMPSHIRE. 17.— Portsmouth ( Borough).— For stealing from a dwelling- house, 7th inst.— A lady's gold watoh, open face, white dial ; a lady's gold ring, set rubies ( one deficient) ; 1 gold brooch, oval shape, set one pearl; 1 pair of gold drops, with one pearl in each; 1 small gold brooch, raised centre, which is larger than the ends; 1 oval- shape gold cameo brooch, representation of female's head; 1 small gold albert chain, snake pattern; 1 silver locket; 1 string of beads; a child's silver bracelet; and a few odd gold studs and earrings— TWO MEN, who stated they had been sent to examine the water- fittings : 1st, age about 22, height 5 ft. 7 in., com- plexion pale, hair black, small dark moustache; dress, short black coat, grey mixture tweed trousers, dark cloth cap with peak ; 2nd, age 30 to 40, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., complexion, hair, whiskers and moustache dark, eyes brown ; dress, long black over- coat, black trousers, black hard felt hat. 18.— Portsmouth ( Borough).— For obtaining food by false pretences— GEORGE CRISP, alias PARKER, age about 23, height 5 ft. 3 or 4 in., slight build, complexion dark, pointed features, hair and small moustache black, otherwise clean shaved, eyes very dark; dressed, when last seen, in black lounge coat and vest, grey striped trousers, white linen shirt front and cuffs, very old twill shirt, black felt hat, side- spring boots with protectors— all much worn. Stated he had been a booking- clerk on the railway. Absconded 26th ult. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Cosser, Town Hall, Portsmouth. KENT. 19.— Chatham ( County).— For failing to report — License Holder JOHN M. RUMLEY, alias JOHN MORROR, Office No. 43239, age 51, height 5 ft. 7 in., complexion dark, hair dark brown, eyes grey, pockpitted, scar left eye, right hand, and right thigh, mole back of neck. Sentenced at Margate, 9th July, 1888, to 5 years penal servitude for shop- breaking. Licensed 13th July, 1892. O 248. Information to Supt. Coppinger, Chatham. 20. — Tunbridge Wells ( Borough). — For obtaining money by means of worthless cheques on the London and County Bank, Westminster Brancjr - C. HOLMES, alias CHARLES STEVENS, age 47, height 5 ft. 9 in., stout build, complexion' fresh, hair, whiskers, and moustache light brown, red mark left cheek, similar to vitriol mark, pupil qf right eye lower than that of left. A baker; supposed native of London. Is fond of betting, and is known ljo bookmakers at Brighton. 21. — Tunbridge Wells ( Borough). — For stealing a costermonger's barrow ( recovered) — STEPHEN KING, age 59, height 5 fc. 6 or 7 in., complexion dark, hair and whiskers dark brown - r dress, old black overcoat, black cord trousers, plaid jacket, Salvation Armv cap, red band taken off. A native of Tunbridge Wells. Warrant issued. Information to the Chief Constable, Tunbridge- Wells. LANCASHIRE. 22. — Leigh ( County) .— For stealing £ 3 at Westleigh, 5th inst.— ALEXANDER SUTHER- LAND, a collier, age 23, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion fair, hair light brown, eyes blue, two- burn marks inside left forearm, large cut mark on right side of head. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Higginbotham, Leigh. 23.— Old Trafford ( County).— For larceny at Levenshulme ( see Case 77, 9th ult.)— Supervise © ROBERT JEFFCOAT, Office No. 40372, a clerk, age 27, height 5 ft. in., complexion sallow, hair dark brown, eyes brown, mole and boil scar centre of breast, boil scar small of back, and 2 scars right knee, slightly pockmarked. Sentenced at Salford, 15th April, 1889, to 18 months hard labour and 4 years police supervision for larceny. 11575. Information to Supt. Bent, Old Traffbrd 24.— Ormskirk ( County).— For failing to sur- render at the Liverpool County Sessions on 27th ult., on a charge of felony— RICHARD GRUNDY, age 42, height 5 ft. 7£ in., complexion sallow, hair light brown, moustache brown, eyes ( large) grey, very surly- looking, stoops when walking, is fond of pigeon shooting, pigeon flying, and dog racing. A . native of Crook, Shevington, Lancashire. Has lived at Hoy land, near Barnsley, Featherstone, near Ponte- fract, Nostle, near Wakefield, Newfield, Spennymoor, Plawsworth, Thornley, and Bishop Auckland. He is also wanted for indecently assaulting a girl at Skelmersdale. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Jervis, Ormskirk. 25.— Accrington ( Borough). — For stealing, 4th inst., 4 pairs of lady's boots, viz.:— 1 pair glove- kid tops, glazed- kid vamps, long- legged and buttoned, size 3; 1 pair kid lace, plain, size 4; 1 pair glazed- kid buttoned ; 1 pair kid buttoned, " La Sanitaire " written on inside tops— all new— A WOMAN, age about 24 or 25, height 5 ft. 1 in. hair ( fringed in front) dark; dress, fawn- coloured jacket, navy- blue skirt trimmed with navy- blue and white- striped ribbon, dark sflats- coloured cotton gloves, white silk handkerchief round neck. This woman called at a shop and asked for several pairs of boots to be sent to her lodgings for her sister and herself to try on. An assistant at the shop accompanied her to her lodgings with the boots and was taken into the parlour, when the woman made an excuse to go upstairs, taking the boots with her, but, instead of doing so, absconded with the boots. She had obtained the lodgings only a few hours pre- viously, when she stated that her husband would join her later on. Information to Chief Constable Beattie, Accring- ton. 26. — Ashton- under- Lyne ( Borough). — For failing to report— Supervisee JAMES HOWARTH, Office No. 40771, age 26, height 5 ft. 8 in., com- plexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes hazel, scars over right eye, on right knee, and abscess scar right side, wart top of right shoulder, nose inclines to left. Sentenced at Salford, 6th January, 1890, to 12 months hard labour and 2 years police supervision for larceny. License Holder HANNAH WHYMAN, alias WILDMAN, LAWSON, and WILSON, Office No. 42320, age 47, height 5 ft. 3* in., complexion sallow, hair brown, eyes grey, scars on eyebrows, centre of forehead, left cheek, upper lip, left side chin, and right forearm, right ear cut. Sentenced at Manchester, 13th August, 1888, to 5 years penal TUESDAY, OCTOBER 25, 1892. THE POLICE GAZETTE. 8 • servitude and 3 years Ipolice supervision for larceny. « 0 28. Supervisee JOSEPH ELLISON, Office No. 40347, age 30, height 5 ft. in., complexion fresh, hair light brown, eyes grey, mole behind left ear, large joint 2nd right finger, end of 3rd left finger damaged. Sentenced at Salford, 22nd October, 1888, to 12 months hard labour and 3 years police supervision for larceny. Supervisee WILLIAM HUNT, Office No. 26181, - age 32, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes hazel, mole under left breast, centre of back, and left bladebone, birthmark top of belly. Sentenced at Salford, 25th October, 1880, to 5 years penal servitude and 7 years police supervision for felony. G 1013. 27.— Ashton- under- Lyne ( Borough). — For unlawfully wounding, 30th ult.— ROBERT WHITE- HEAD, alias " YORKEY " and " LONG BOB," a labourer cr gas- stoker, age about 40, height about • 6 ft., slender build, thin features, high cheekbones, complexion dark, hair dark brown, moustache dark; dress, dark coat ( torn at sleeves), dark vest, white • cord or moleskin trousers, plaid cap, clogs, was wearing a white slop under coat. His wife resides • at Halifax. Will probably seek employment at gas works. Escaped from custody of police on 4th inst. Warrant issue Not to be apprehended out of the United Kingdom. Information to Chief Constable Snell, Ashton- . under- Lyne. 28. — Burnley ( Borough). — For embezzling JE6 10s. 6d.— JOSEPH MOON, age about 30, height • 5 ft. 10 in., complexion, very fair, hair ( cut very short and parted in centre) light brown, slight light mous- tache, no whiskers, eyes blue. A native of Nelson, Lancashire. Is very fond of public- house company, and may be found with betting men. Warrant issued. 29.— Burnley ( Borough).— For obtaining a large quantity of leather, by false pretences, 5th ult.— HOUGHTON GREENWOOD, age about 30, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., complexion fresh, hair and mous- tache dark brown, no whiskers, prominent cheek- bones, thin nose, rather flat- footed, walks with a swinging gait, carries both hands in trousers pockets, leans forward, and turns his toes out. A tackier ; native of Nelson, Lancashire. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Harrop, Burnley. LEICESTERSHIRE. 30.— Melton Mowbray ( County).— For em- bezzling £ 2 12s. at Somerby— THOMAS COOPER, age 34, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., complexion, hair, and eyes dark, walks with a slight springing gait; dress, dark overcoat ( burnt on right side near bottom), • dark tweed cloth coat, vest and trousers, black felt . hat, lace boots. Is supposed to be a native of London. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Her practice is to to take lodgings at private and public houses, and represent that she is going to live as a servant with some one in the neighbourhood. She also goes to Registry Offices' and obtains the names of people in good position who are in want of a cook, applies for the situation, and asks for her railway fare at each place. She then suddenly leaves her lodgings, taking with her anything she can carry away.
