All announcements for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, and all communications upon them ' should be addressed to THE EDITOB OP THE POLICE GAZETTE, NEW SCOTLAND YABD, LONDON, S. W. 2. Particulars concerning persons whose apprehension is sought will be inserted in one issue of the POLICE GAZETTE, if they are sufficient to enable action to be taken upon them by another force. 8. Particulars as to stolen property will be likewise inserted in one issue, if sufficient to enable the article in question to be thereby identified. • k In all cases where a reward is offered the name and address of some person responsible for the payment must be given, and the exact conditions be clearly stated. 5. Portraits of persons whose apprehension is sought for serious offences, and engravings of stolen property, will be prominently inserted, with detailed particulars, at a cost of 15s. per portrait, and of 7s. 6d. per photograph or sketch of a stolen article, including the expense of engraving on wood. 6. Every announcement, if for the apprehension of a person, must be guaranteed by the signature of an officer of not less rank than Superintendent; and, ifthe name of such person be required to be inserted, and no warrant is in force against him, the requisition must be signed by the chief officer of police, or his immediate deputy, of the county, city, or borough, as the case may be. 7. Announcements concerning stolen property must be guaranteed bu an officer REGULATIONS. than Inspector, or analogous thereto. \ officer of not less rank 8. Announcements of all persons to be t^^ rehended or of stolen property hear a number, a. jl art i alphabetically arranged by counties. 9. The force which causes particulars concerning delinquents or stolen property to be inserted in the POLICE GAZETTE, must, on their apprehension or recovery, at once transmit to the Editor notice of the fact, referring to the number of the announcement for insertion in the next issue. 10. In all cases, the officer signing the request for insertion of any announcement, will be wholly responsible for any proceedings whicA may result from such publication. 11. Announcements for the Friday issue should be forxarded so as to be received not later than noon on Wednesday, and for the Tuesday edition not later than Saturday morning. They must be clearly written on one side of the paper only, be in the usual form, and accompanied by a covering letter. 12. All payments must be in advance, either at the office, New Scotland Yard, by cheque, crossed " Drummond Sf Co.," Post Office Order payable at Cflaring Cross, Postal Order, or is Stamps. 13. Advertisements are accepted for the POLICE GAZETTE through Mr. James Willing, 125, Strand, London, the sole Agent, who will furnish the rates on application. 14. Cities and Boroughs therein, arranged in strict alphabetical order. 2.— Any additional copies of the GAZETTE beyond the number at present supplied will be forwarded on application in the form set forth in circular of the 7th of November, 1883. 3.— It is particularly requested that any com- plaints as to the non- delivery or of irregularity in the date of delivery of the POLICE GAZETTE, may be at once notified to the Editor. The following is a copy of the order which governs the circulation, by the Metropolitan Police, of advertisements, or reward bills, for the discovery of property or the detec- tion of crime. The Editor inserts it, in hope of preventing delays which sometimes occur in publishing such notices, on account of their not being in accordance with the regu- lations in force in the Metropolis :— 1. Printed hand- bills, or other advertisements, offering a reward for the discovery of property or the detection of crime, whether printed and issued by the Metropolitan Police, or distributed and exhibited, with the sanction of the Commissioners, on the application of private persons, or of the Police of any County or Borough, must be clearly expressed in relation to the following points- fa) The amount of the reward. ( 6) The conditions on which it is payable, ( o) The person by whom it will be paid. ( d) That the name and address of the printer appear thereon. 1 No expression must be used in such an advertise- ment, in relation to pioperty stolen, or criminally taken or disposed of, holdi g out any expectation that the reward will be paid on its return without the offender being brought to trial, or without enquiry. NOTE.— There are 177 Stations of the Metropolitan Volice Force at which Notices can be posted. APPREHENSIONS SOUGHT. METROPOLITAN POLICE DISTRICT. 1. — E Division.— For stealing £ 1 5s. 8d.— FREDERICK SPARK, age 39, height 5 ft. 5 in., complexion florid, hair and moustache light, eyes blue; dress, black coat, blue serge vest, light trousers, black cloth peak cap. A native of Hytbe, Kent. Warrant issued. 2.— M Division.— For stealing, by means of the confidence trick, 16 Bank of England notes for £ 5, Nos. 24009 to 24018 and 74192 to 74197, all pro- bably dated May, 1892— Two men: ( 1st) a man called DR. REED, age 35, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., stout build, complexion fair, moustache light; dress, black cheviot frock coat, light striped trousers, black silk hat. ( 2) PAT CONNOR, age 30, height 5 ft. G in., slight build, complexion fair, small light moustache, spike with Irish accent; dress, black diagonal frock coat, grey trousers, black silk hat Supposed to be an Irishman. 3.— S Division.— For obtaining £ 2 3s. 10d., by means of a fictitious cheque on the London and County Bank, Edgware- road Branch— A man who gave the name of F. STEVENS, age 30, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., complexion fresh, full face, slight dark moustache, hair dark brown, dissipated appear- ance ; dressed as a respectable mechanic. Is sup- posed to be travelling in the provinces as a working electrician. Warrant issued. 4.— T Division.— For embezzling £ 15 4s lOd.— WILLIAM HUMPHREYS, age about 28, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fair, hair brown, moustache sandy, eyes hazel; dress, black coat and vest, brown lace shoes, hard felt hat. A native of Edenbridge, Kent, where his father resides. Has an uncle at Guildford. May endeavour to leave the country and obtain employment on a cattle boat. Warrant issued. 5. — T Division. — For obtaining silk and money by means of a worthless cheque on the London Chartered Bank of Australia, 2, Old Broad- street, E. C.— J. HITCHINGS, alias J. HITCHENS J. ROGERS, J. E. FREEMAN, J. TAYLOR, and W. JOHNSON, age 35 to 40, height 5 ft. 5 in., ' com- plexion fresh, hair and moustache dark, full round face, good teeth; dress, dark grey tweed suit, black cloth cap with peak, sometimes wears a black frock coat and high silk hat, also a black morniug suit, and high silk hat with mourning band, or black hard felt hat. Was formerly a draper's assistant, and afterwards a bookmaker. Warrant issued. Information to be forwarded to the Metropolitan Police Office, New Scotland Yard, S. W. AYRSHIRE. 6.— Ayr ( County). — For stealing poultry, on 22nd ult. — Three rough - looking tramps : 1st, JOHN MURRAY, a labourer or navvy, age 30 to 35, stout build, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., complexion, hair, moustache, and eyes dark, Scotch dialect; dress, dark tweed jacket, moleskin trousers, light muffler, old boots, dark single peak jockey cap — 2ud, JOHN McGOWAN, a labourer or navvy, age 30 to 35, height 5 ft. 7 or 8 in., stout build, complexion four, lia, ii auu" moustache light, cy od blue, mixed Irish and Scotch dialect, marks of old sores about AAICG £ LS if from falls ; dress, dark tweed jacket, moleskin trousers, muffler, old boots, dark cap. A native of Newmains, Lanarkshire.— 3rd, SAMUEL KELLY, a navvy or furnaceman, age 30 to 35, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion, hair, moustache, and eyes dark, mixed Irish and Scotch dialect; dress, old dark tweed coat, moleskin trousers, old boots, dark cap. A native of Newmains, Lanarkshire. Has been previously convicted at the Sheriff Court, Hamilton, on 13th December, 1881, and sentenced to 5 months imprisonment for larceny, and at the High Court, Edinburgh, on 27th November, 1883, to 5 years penal servitude for assault and robbery. They are likely to travel together, and to be found at public works or in common lodging- houses. War/ ant issued. Information to the Chief Constable of Ayrshire, Ayr. CARNARVONSHIRE. 7.— Conway ( County). — For obtaining money, board, and lodgings, by false pretences— A man calling himself MAJOR 1YAN SOLOPHY, age about 42, height 5 ft. 4 in., complexion sallow, hair dark brown, moustache sandy, round face, eyes blue, walks erect with military gait, fre* h cuts on palm of left hand; dress, blue- black morning coat and vest, black striped trousers, grey overcoat with velvet collar, black soft felt framed hat, close- fitting, blue figured white tie, side- spring boots. Says he is a Russian exile, and that he has a wealthy brother in Australia. Speaks with a foreign accent, some- times calling himself Major, and at other times Count Ivan Solophy. He goes about hotels and private lodging- houses telling the most sensational stories, and, on the pretence of waiting for his brother to telegraph money from Australia, obtains food and money. DENBIGHSHIRE. 9. — Wrexham ( County). — For stealing a watch ( recovered), 10th inst.— PETER JONES, age about 30, height ."> ft. 9 in., complexion tanned, pockmarked, hair light brown, rather sandy mous- tache, eyes grey, stoops when walking; dress, dark worsted coat and vest, dark trousers with blue stripe. A labourer. Has served in the Army. Has a brother residing at 77, Nimrod- street, Walton, Liverpool, and at 26, Thatts Heath,, ^ t. Helens, and a sister at Halkyn Mold. Warrant issued. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Vaughan, Wrexham. DERBYSHIRE. 10.— Eckington ( County).— For embezzling the sum of 10s., while acting as photographer's assistant and collector, about 14th May last — FRANK TAYLOR, age about 30, height 5 ft. 7 in., slight build, complexion, hair, and slight moustache dark, thin face and ncse; dress, dark worsted coat and vest, dark striped conl trousers, black hard felt hat. A native of Nottingham. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Faulkner, Eckington. ESSEX. 11— Chelmsford ( County).— For stealing, at Springfield, 3rd inst., a strong bay horse cob, 9 years, about 14 hands, black eyes, big feet, scar inside near hock, hairy legs, white streak down face, short mane and tail, is a little over behind, and i3 worth £' 12 or £ 11; a set of harness, brass mounted, except hames, which are silver- plated, the traces have chains at ends ; and a dog- cart, yellow wheels, black body picked out red, the springs are very narrow, but strong, " Tavner " on caps of wheels, blue cloth cushions— A. man, supposed named LA HE IN, or LORE1N, age » bout50, height about 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., blotchy face, hair ( cut short) grey, very long features; dress, large light plaid suit, black hard felt hat, has a hole cut in one of his shoes over the top. He belongs to London, and used to travel, hawking cheap cloth, but now travels hawking imitation oil painting. Suffers from gravel. Supposed to be ia possession ot' a pedlar's certificate, but place of issue unknown. Information to Deputy Chief Constable Somerset, Chelmsford. 12. — Grays ( County). — For embezzling £ 17 10s. 7d., on 1st inst.— JAMES GOBETT, age about 30, height about 5 ft. 7 oi 8 in., complexion fair, hair dark brown, moustache light, rather long thin features, peculiar twitching of the eyes when talking, is of thin build, and very active ; dress, btack diagonal coat and vest ( square patch on middle of back of coat), dark brown trousers with grey stripes, lace boots, light skull cap. Has been in the Army. Friends reside at iOd, Brady- street, Bethnal Green. Warrant issued. Information to Snpt. Joidan, Grays. GLOUCESTERSHIRE. 13.— Bristol ( City).— For burglary, 10th inst., and stealing— A gold watch, made iu Johannesburg, Africa, " H. T. M. to J. A. J." in monogram on back; a spade guinea ; lady's gold ring, set with pearls and ruby in centre, filigree work round edge; gold brooch, with largo carbuncle ; 4 gold seals on ring; wedding riDg ; and cameo brooch— THREE MEN: ( 1- t) age abont 2>, height 5 ft. 6 in., com- plexion dark, moustache black; dress, dark clothes. ( 2nd) age f bout 25, height 5 ft.. 4 in., complexion dark, of Jewish appearance; dress, dark clothes. ( 3rd) age about 35, height 5 ft. 8 in., complexion fair. Two carried revolvers and threatened the lives of iho inmates, while the third stole the property. Information to the Chief Constable, Bristol. HERTFORDSHIRE. 14.— Bishop's Stortford ( County). — For deserting his wife a- d four children, 27th ult., leaving them chargeable to the Bishop's Stortford Union — WILLIAM EDWARDS, ago 36, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., complexion and hair dark, eyes hazel, scar on top of head; dress, black jacket, cord trousers, brown hard felt hat. A native of Matching, Essex. Is supposed to be working as a labourer in a nursery near London. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Tripp, Bishop's Stortford. HUNTINGDONSHIRE. 15.— St. NeotS ( County).— For obtaining by false pretences, on 9th June last, a cheque for £ 49 5s. Id.— A MAN, age about 40, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., hair, beard, and moustache dark, talks quickly, of Jewish appearance; dress, dark clothes. He represented himself to be connected with the firm of " Bell, Rag Merchant, Lincoln," and endorsed the cheque " Henry Bell." He has an extensive know- ledge of rag merchants and paper makers in the country, upon whom it is believed he is frequently making attempts to obtain money and goods by false pretences. Information to Supt. Copping, St. Neots. LANCASHIRE. 16. — Blackburn ( County). — For stealing a horse ( recovered), at Cuerdale— ROBERT CAT- TERALL, age 24, height 5 ft. 11 in., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, eyes grey, prominent nose, lost two upper front teeth, scar right groin, burn mark on right nipple ; dress, blue serge jacket and vest, dark brown corduroy trousers, blue and white striped shirt, blue tie, strong lace boots, slate- coloured cap with peak. A native of Blackburn. Information to Supt. Myers, County Police Office, Blackburn. 17.— Bolton ( County).— For stealing a mare at Turton, on 27th ult. — ROBERT CATTERALL, age 24, height 5 ft. 11., complexion fresh, hair dark brown, no whiskers or moustache, lost 2 upper front teeth, scar right groin, burn mark right nipple; dress, blue serge jacket and vest, dark brown corduroy trousers, blue and white striped shirt, blue necktie, strong lace boots, slate- colour cap with peak. A native of Blackburn. ; Information to Supt. Leeming, Bolton. 18. — Rochdale ( County). — For stealing at Midrlleton, 22nd ult., a cash- box and £ 8— JAMES MABANE, age 28, height 5 ft. 5^ in., complexion fresh, hair sandy, eyes blue, scar on third right knuckle. A butcher ; native of Yorkshire.— GEO. or JAMES TAYLOR, alias KITCHEN, age 23, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion fresh, hair and eyes brown, scar3 first left knuckle and on top of nose. A traveller; native of Lancashire. — A WOMAN, age about 29, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in.; dress, black jacket and dress, large black broad- brimmed hat trimmed with black ; s, mart appearance. Mabane and Taylor were each sentenced to 12 months imprisonment at Salford Sessions, 10th April, 1887, for till larceny. Their modus operandi is to make a small purchase, tender gold in payment, and afterwards pretend to have dropped part of change through cellar- grating, and while the shopkeeper searches the cellar they commit a larceny. 19.— Rochdale ( County).— For picking pockets at Middleton, on 6th inst.— A MAN and WOMAN : ( 1st) age about 60, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., complexion sallow, hair, whiskers and moustache red ( turning grey) ; dress, light mixture suit, soft black hat, wore a silver albert with sixpenny piece attached, carried an overcoat on his arm and a stick in his hand ; ( 2nd) age 50 to 55, height 5 ft. 2 or 3 in., complexion sallow, hair grey, blue mark on nose; dress, black stuff dress, large white apron, small black- and- white plaid shawl over head, carried a large umbrella. Both spoke with Irish accent. Information to Supt. Heywood, Rochdale. 20.— Wigan County).— For failing to report- Supervisee WM. HENRY WILD, alias SLEE, Office No. 36696, age 36, height 5 ft. 6 in., com- plexion dark, hair dark brown, eyes blue, scars on head, nose, chin, centre of back, each shoulder, on right thigh, below right knee, inside rt ankle, knuckle of 2nd right finger and left thumb, small heart inside rt forearm. Sentenced at Salford, 7th January, 1884; to 5 years penal servitude and 7 years police supervision for fraud. D K 1111. 21.— Wigan ( County). — For obtaining 6s. by false pretences, at Pemberton — A MAN, age about 34, height 5 ft. 9 or 10 ID., rather stout build, complexion fair, hair light brown, small light moustache, thick lips; dress, dark cloth short jacket and vest, black corduroy trousers, billycock hat, white collar and front, black necktie, blucher boots. Appearance of a mechanic. His modus operandi is to call at houses and ask for lodgings, stating that he is a fitter by trade, and that he has come from Huddersfield, and has obtained employment as a fitter at a colliery. After obtaining lodgings, he states that he has left his box at the railway station, and asks for the loan of money to fetch it. Information to Supt. Brassington, Wigan. 22. — Accrington ( Borough). — For obtaining money by false pretences— R. HALLIDAY ( sup- posed false), age 27 or 28, height 5 ft. 6 or 7 in., thin build, complexion fiesh, hair cut short, slight moustache, no whiskers, of respectable and gentle- manly appearance; dress, grey suit, billycock hat, wore gold eyeglasses. This man bought a new watch, on 4th inst., from a jeweller, and tendered in payment a Dividend War- rant, No. 967, dated London, 25th July, 1892, on the London & Westminster Bank, Limited, Lotlibury, for £ 10 8s., and received £ 6 4s. change. He left the watch for the purpose of having it oiled and regulated, giving an address in the neighbourhood ( false). It has since been ascertained that the dividend warrant was sent by post on 27th ult., and is supposed to have been stolen during trans- mission. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Beattie, Accring- ton. 23.— Oldham ( Borough).— For failing to report — Supervisee JAS. KERSHAW, Office No. 43261, age 62, height 5 ft. 1| in., complexion pale, hair and eyes grey, blue scar outside corner of right eyebrow and on left cheek, hairy chest. Sentenced at Salford, 11th January, 1892, to 6 months hard labour and 1 year police supervision for felony. 7656. Information to Chief Constable, Oldham. 24.— Salford ( Borough).— For failing to report — Supervisee THOMAS WM. HEAVISIDE, alias HEAVISIDES and HEAYYSIDE, Office No. 43406, age 24, height 5 ft. 5^ in., complexion fresh, hair browD, eyes brown, mole on right cheek, scar out- sido left elbow and wrist. Sentenced at Manchester, 5th Feb., 1891, to 18 months hard labour and 3 years police supervision, for larceny. 25.— Salford ( Borough).— For failing to report — Supervisee ANNIE WHITTAKER, Office No. 36880, age 35, height 5 ft., complexion sallow, hair dark brown, eyes brown, small mole rt side fore- head, nose broken, scars rt shoulder and lower lip. Sentenced at Salford, 25th February, 1884, to 5 years penal servitude and 7 years police supervision, for larceny. Information to the Chief Constable, Town Hall, Salford. 26— Warrington ( Borough).— For stealing a watch ( recovered), a striped Oxford shirt, and a white flannel undershirt— A man, who gave the name of JOHN ANDERSON, age 50, height 5 ft. 4 or 5 in., complexion pale, hair and moustache dark; dress, black jacket, dark tweed trousers and vest, lace boots. Warrant issued. Information to Chief Constable Hunt, Warrington. LINCOLNSHIRE. 27.— Bourne ( County).— For stealing a pair of trousers ( recovered), at Tallington — BERTHA THOMAS, ago 36, height 5 ft. 6 in., complexion fresh, spotted face, caused through drink, Roman nose, hair and eyes dark; dress, black dress, short black jacket, trimmed with black astrachan, black bonnet with three dirty white roses on top, old button boots, sometimes wears a black fall. Has been twice married, her first name being ROYLE. Has relatives named Holmes at Tinwell, Rutland, and Markham, at Godmanchester, a daughter at Coventry, and her mother, Mrs. Burgess, resides at Burleigh House, London- avenue, North- end, Ports- mouth. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Brown, Bourne. 28. — Spalding ( County). — For stealing, at Moulton Seas End, on 2nd inst.— A pair of reins and 1 side rein ( recovered at Boston on 3rd inst.) ; also 6 plain brass faces for harness ; and 1 pair of leather leggings, with knee- caps—" HARRY," a tramping labourer, ago about 40, height 5 ft. 6 in., stout build, TUESDAY, AUGUST 1 6 , 1892. THE POLICE GAZETTE. 3 complexion dark, hair, whiskers, and moustache light brown, walks lame ; dress, sleeved fustian or cord vest, black cord trousers; carried a dark coat on his arm, and was wearing the leggings. Information to Supt. Jarvis, Spalding. 29.— Spilsby ( County).— For larceny ( dwelling) at Toynton St. Peter's, on lst inst.— SAMUEL HOLDEN, alias " DEAF BOB," a labourer, age about 50, height about 5 ft. 2 in., clean shaved except under the chin, has a fleshy substance about the size of a pigeon's egg on left eyebrow; dress, blue cotton suit, and peak cap which he generally wears over left eye to conceal the lump. He carried a bundle containing a check cloth suit and a pair of drab cotton trousers. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. Sowden, Spilsby. MONMOUTHSHIRE. 30.— Tredegar ( County).— For failing to report — License Holder WILLIAM JONES, alias WM. SLADE, Office No. 43252, age 3G, height 5 ft. 3 in., complexion fresh, hair brown, eyes grey, scars on head and over It eyebrow, mole rt breast. Sentenced at Usk, 6th April, 1887, to 7 years penal servitude for larceny. Licensed 5th July last. Z F N 433. Information to Supt. Parker, Tredegar. NOTTINGHAMSHIRE. 31.— Bingham ( County).— For unlawfully and maliciously wounding a police constable, at Barn- stone, on 14th inst. — HENRY ROSS, alias " SCOTTY," a labourer, age 34, height 5 ft. 8 or 9 in., complexion fresh, hair and moustache dark sandy, eyes dark grey; dress, brown tweed suit, strong lace boots, black hard felt hat. Has been in the Army. Warrant issued. Information to Supt. This man opened a shop on 1st June, represent- ing that he was a practical watchmaker from Benson's, and obtained a number of watches to repair. Carried a white bundle. A farm servant; supposed to be a native of Harlston, Norfolk. Has relatives residing at Harlston, and Northfleet, Kent. Is in company of a farm servant named Fuller, of same age and height, who has relatives residing at Newton, near Cambridge. Stated they were going to Liverpool, but will probably make for the places named, or seek employ- ment amongst farmers. Warrant issued. NORTHAMPTONSHIRE. 86.— Northampton ( County).— 6th inst., in the parish of East Haddon— Part of the body of a full- grown WOMAN, the head and arms were miss- ing, one arm had been cut off with a very fine saw, death appeared to have taken place some time since as the flesh from the upper part of the body was gone and the bones fell to pieces when moved ; the age of the person could not be ascertained but was over 18, and, when living, is supposed to have been about 5 ft. 4 in. in height and slight build. The body had on a chemise ( nearly new) trimmed with frilling round top and sleeves, a pair of white calico drawers with tucks and embroidery at bottom, black ribbed stockings ( nearly new), flannelette petticoat, pink, white and drab 3tripes, green cashmere skirt with black satin frill at bottom, part of, calico night dress, tucks down front with embroidery, it is cut round the neck, having apparently been worn when the head was severed from the body. On the 30th ulto., this man took the order, which was crossed, to an iron- monger's shop, with an advice for hinges, bolts, locks, & c., with a request that he might be handed the balance of the order in cash, but as there was a slight delay in obtaining the change, he became suspicious and decamped.
